Racism can affect health, mental and physical

In 2021, over 600 signatures on a petition and 30 speakers from the general public at a San Diego County Board of Supervisors meeting assisted in the county’s official, unanimous declaration: racism is a public health crisis.

Chairwoman) Nora Vargas, the plan put in writing what many had already experienced: the effects of racism harm the mental and physical health of those on the receiving end, and San Diego County is far from immune. In 2024, with a spike in hate crimes nationwide (San Diego County included), the connection between racism and public health continues to be a relevant and important relationship to understand.

Hate crimes and related incidents are an escalating problem in this region. In fact new data shows that between 2022 and 2023 hate crimes increased by a staggering 73%. In an effort to safeguard residents, multiple San Diego representatives have introduced fresh bills and initiatives designed to shield locals from forthcoming instances of hate and harassment within their community.

White House Announces Big Changes for Race and Ethnicity Data Collection

Black Arabs and Armenian Americans are excluded from the new MENA race category

March 28th the White House rolled out new standards for race and ethnicity data collection, including for the first time Middle Easterners and North Africans — MENA — as a racial category.

The changes in reclassification of several communities were rolled out by the Biden Administration’s Office of Management and Budget. The changes to Directive 15 require federal agencies to use one combined question for race and ethnicity, and encourages respondents to select multiple options on how they identify. Advocates say the granular data will help determine the allocation of federal funds, and could impact redistricting. The standards have not been changed since 1997.

The effects of racism go beyond just personal reactions when it comes to health—one Commonwealth Fund study found that one in four Black and Hispanic adults aged 60 and older reported that they have been treated unfairly or were not taken seriously by health professionals because of their ethnicity. The same study found that over one in four older U.S. adults felt that they had not received the care they needed as a result of some form of discrimination.

Racism and hate come in more forms than just extreme cases of violence, threatening language or harassment. One National Institute of Health (NIH) study defines a “perceived discriminatory event” as a “behavioral manifestation of a negative attitude, judgment, or unfair treatment toward members of a group.” The study does note that these are self-reported events that were not verified by a secondhand party, but any such experience can cause an emotional stress

Local Hate Littering Ordinance Off to Sacramento

Assembly bill 3024 has been in the works since Sept. 2023, when District 7 Councilmember Raul Campillo brought forward an ordinance to the City Council to address the prevalence of antisemitic flyers found on car windshields. According to the Anti-Defamation League this occurred about eight times in San Diego in 2023; distributed in neighborhoods such as Allied Gardens, Del Cerro, and San Carlos. Across the nation, the organization found that in 2023 there were more than 3,600 anti-semitic acts of assault, vandalism, and harassment in the United States.

response. These, the study says, frequently lead to negative emotional and psychological effects and may also be connected to physical ailments.

Instances of stress have immediate physical ramifications, such as elevated heart rate, rising cortisol levels and higher blood pressure — so repeated exposure to stressful events, such as discrimination or racism, can take a higher toll that may not seem obvious at first. The NIH study states that “repeated exposure to discrimination may work in ways that prepare the body to be more physically reactive in stressful or potentially stressful social situations,” which can be a significant factor in hypertension or lower the immune system’s ability to effectively prevent disease or infection.

Discrimination, both firsthand experienced and perceived from outside observances in the healthcare system, has rippling effects. The Commonwealth Fund study found that 49% of Black women say the healthcare system frequently discriminates by ethnicity or racial background. This can affect not only those struggling

City Attorney Mara Elliott, Female Focused Proposal

While showing support for AB 3024, City Attorney Elliott has also been championing an initiative on her own. Her proposal seeks to be the first major update to health care clinic access law this century.

Coming on the heels of a historic overturn of Roe. V Wade, San Diego has declared itself as a safe haven for women seeking reproductive services such as abortion. However, that has not come without an onslaught of threats and aggressive demonstrations pestering local healthcare providers and patients on entrances and exits to clinic facilities.

While overall crime has decreased, hate crimes in San Diego targeting ethnicity, sexual orientation, and religion increased exponentially. Incidents against a person's ethnicity rose by 53% compared to last year. Meanwhile, sexual orientation and crimes against religion both rose by 11%.

With hate flyers plaguing Councilmember Campillo’s District specifically, his action in proposing the ordinance has since moved up the chain to Sacramento, where Assemblymember Chris Ward has taken on the initiative through Assembly Bill 3024 in hopes to provide a safeguard for all Califorians. These national trends are reflected in data collected by Live Well San Diego, a county organization designed to partner with specific regions in the county to promote the health and well-being of San Diegans. The Health Equity data collected in 2022 found that 16.8% of Black San Diegan adults had reported delaying or not receiving needed medical care, the highest amount in an ethnic demographic to do so between Black Americans, white Americans, Asian American/Pacific Islanders and Hispanic Americans.

There are a host of reasons why a patient may delay receiving medical treatment, including worry of mistreatment or discrimination, but cost is typically the most cited reason in the U.S. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey. 60% of Black adults in the survey report bear the burden of worrying about the cost of

medical care, with 65% of Hispanic adults saying the same thing.

Understanding the different aspects of community health is a necessity when seeking equity in healthcare. Clearly addressing discrimination and racism, in whatever form they are found, is key to efforts to stop hate and move people toward healing.

“I have seen people be paralyzed in their cars with fear trying to get out and inside [Planned Parenthood], one lady had a panic attack because of the fishbowl effect one receives when trying to get medical care,” said Planned Parenthood Volunteer and District 3 resident, Laura Libel.

Therefore, the proposed amendment aims to prevent the obstruction, harassment, and intimidation of people entering and exiting covered facilities, while preserving the fundamental constitutional rights of people to peacefully assemble and express opinions on matters of public concern.

Elliott’s proposal will build upon the City’s 1997 buffer zone regulations for covered facilities. Buffer zones establish an area around a specific location where speech and demonstration activities are subject to regulations not applicable outside the area. The city first enacted this regulation in an effort to balance often competing rights at covered facilities.

Here is where our current laws fall short, Elliott says.

The new changes include a reclassification of Asian Americans that would include individuals with origins in Central or East Asia, Southeast Asia, or South Asia. Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese are listed. Those of other Asian origins — such as Hmong, Thai, Pakistani and others — would write in their country of origin. This allows agencies like the Census to report a more accurate picture of the Asian American population.

The new standards also redefine Native Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders, broadening the category to include those with origins in Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands, including, for example, Native Hawaiian, Samoan, Chamorro, Tongan, Fijian, and Marshallese.

away from a person entering or exiting a covered facility; but only if the person asks the demonstrator to do so. According to Eliott, this imposes an “unreasonable burden” on the person seeking to access services within their protected right.

“No one should be afraid to see their doctor, learn, pray, or attend a school meeting,” said Eliott. The proposed updates would therefore seek to shift that burden on the basis of consent. Harassing and intimidating behavior would be prohibited within 100 feet unless consent is given, and blocking entrances and access to the facility of any kind is also prohibited.

“People still have the right and ability to express their beliefs, but these amendments will better protect the privacy and access rights of people,” said the City Attorney’s office.

Additionally, civil penalties per violation would be $2,500; an increase from $1,000 per violation. Covered facilities will also be authorized to post signage on their property advising protesters of the ordinance.

The next step will be for readings of the proposal to go in front of the full San Diego City Council, in the following weeks.

Native Americans are now redefined as American Indian or Alaska Native. Black people are now listed as Black or African American. And Latinx people are listed as Hispanic or Latino.

Agencies that collect federal data are required to begin implementing the changes within 18 months and finalize their methods within 5 years. OMB is establishing an Interagency Committee on Race and Ethnicity Statistical Standards, convened by the Office of the U.S. Chief Statistician, that will maintain and carry out a government-wide research agenda and undertake regular reviews of Directive 15.

AANHPI advocates have long advocated for a disaggregation of data, with particular regards to health outcomes.

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders said in a statement: “For too long, federal data collection and reporting practices have often failed to measure, reflect, and disaggregate the diversity of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander experiences. And they have historically contributed to painful and enduring ‘model minority’ stereotypes while erasing the unique needs within AA and NHPI communities, which include dozens of distinct ethnic groups that speak over 100 different languages and dialects.”

son, because on April 4, 1972, the Rev. Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Congressman from New York, died in a Florida hospital. His death, although not related to Dr. King’s, occurred exactly four years, four months, and four days after the death of Dr. King. Both men represent great losses to humanity and to African Americans in particular.

We know of Dr. King’s achievements and sacrifices but so much of Adam Clayton Powell ’s record has gone unnoticed. Powell is the member of Congress that President Lyndon Baines Johnson went to in order to pass the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act and the War on Poverty under the Economic Opportunity Act. He is responsible for the Arts and Humanities Endowment Act, Elementary and Secondary Education, Higher Education Act, the Title VI Public Accommodatons provision of the Civil

Rights Act and the Equal Employment Opportunity Act.

In all he authored more than 60 major pieces of legislation in his six years as Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee on which the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm also served. He authored the Older Americans Act and the Black Lung Legislation for those suffering from years of working in the nation’s coal mines and he was a voice for all Black Americans in particular, whether or not they lived in New York’s Harlem as his Congressional District.

Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. died of cancer. Martin Luther King, Jr. died of an assassin’s bullet. We must never forget either even as we honor others who came before and after them.

The Erasure Of Black Educators

I celebrate the upcoming 70th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that put America squarely on the road to eliminating the scourge that was “separate but equal.” I truly do.“Separate but equal” condemned generations of Black Americans to a lesser life under the law. To barely camouflaged contempt and outright racism from the governments they themselves paid taxes to sustain. To artificially limited opportunity and potential. But its abrupt end in education 70 years ago had an unforeseen consequence—one that should be of great concern to anyone who cares about racial justice, educational equity, and true equality of opportunity: Black educators and their pedagogy. In antebellum America, teaching Black children was illegal in many parts of the country. A Black person learning to read could face a literal death sentence. But even during these abject years, there were brave Black educators who continued to teach in hidden corners of society.

After the Civil War, during the separate-but-equal era, schools at all levels were segregated, especially but not exclusively in the South. Black-serving institutions were, of course, chronically underfunded and marginalized by the white power structures of the day. This systemic bullying belied the “…but equal” part of the equation, impacting the quality of education Black students received. However, there was one clear “upside” to having a white power structure that truly didn’t care who taught Black students. It gave space and opportunity for generations of exceptional Black educators who created, sharpened, and shared their craft and deliv-

Injustice Unveiled: Blind Mother Fights for Mentally Ill Son

In a shocking revelation of potential miscarriage of justice, Patrick Polk, an African American male diagnosed with mental illness, finds himself ensnared in a legal quagmire, battling false accusations and institutional negligence. The saga began with Patrick having illegal possession of an E-Bike which I was told by his Public Defender was a probationary offense. This initial allegation somehow grew into accusations of a violent crime allegedly perpetrated by Polk, wielding nothing but a comb as a weapon.

ered the best possible education to their Black students, despite working within, and often adjacent to, the most inequitable system imaginable.

But school integration and the dismantling of segregated schools changed this dynamic. Those in power cared very much about who led these newly formed integrated classrooms. It was so taboo for Black teachers to instruct white children, let alone lead “their” schools. It didn’t matter that the white teachers who were kept were often far less qualified and credentialed. In this cruel way, Black educators were systematically driven from the profession. Today, as a direct legacy of this injustice, Black teachers remain drastically underrepresented in the American teaching force, especially when you consider the growing diversity of the student body.

Although 15% of public school students in the United States identify as Black, only 7% of public school teachers identify as Black. The number of Black teachers would need to grow by approximately 280,000, based on today’s numbers, to meet the proportion of students of color in America’s schools.

The result is that most students go through 13 years of public education without a single Black teacher to support and mirror a future of greater possibilities. And all indications are that things are about to get worse.

Typifying what’s happening nationwide, in Pennsylvania, there has been a 60% drop in interest among Black college students enrolling in educator prep programs and declaring education as a major, even as the demand for new teachers is expected to increase significantly over the next few decades. Why should Black youth have an interest in teaching when studies show the

In a damning twist, Polk’s defense was further undermined by the public defender’s apparent rush to plea out the case without even consulting the accused (until much later when I found he had not yet spoken with Patrick or verifying the veracity of the alleged evidence). This premature action raises serious questions about due diligence and ethical conduct within the legal system.

Compounding the injustice, a grave error in court proceedings resulted in Polk’s unjust incarceration, with a hefty bail of $50,000 hanging over his head. Recent correspondence

A Black teacher can change a Black child’s life trajectory. Research shows when a Black student has one Black teacher by third grade, they’re 13% more likely to enroll in college. With two Black teachers, that jumps to 32%. For Black boys from low-income households, their on-time high school graduation rates soar by almost 40%. Black teachers matter because they save and change the lives of Black children.

It should also go without saying that all students benefit from a teacher corps that reflects society. A true diversity of teachers brings more opportunities for educational experiences that counter racism, promote cross-cultural understanding, and prepare our children for an increasingly complex world.

How many Black role models, mentors and protectors did we miss out on as a result of the gutting of Black educators after the end of separate but equal? How could they have influenced and informed curricula, pedagogy, policy and practices? How could they have bolstered Black children’s sacred trust in our education system?

Our path forward is clear. We must do more to encourage Black youth to enter and remain in the teacher pipeline from high school through college and on to careers leading highly successful classrooms. We need to rally around rebuilding — not building — the national Black teacher pipeline that was lost in the aftermath of the demise of separate but equal.

It’s the only way we can truly deliver on the promise of Brown v. Board and provide an equally excellent education for all.

However, amid this bleak landscape of legal malpractice and institutional apathy, a glimmer of hope emerges. Patrick Polk’s steadfast ally in this tumultuous ordeal is none other than his blind mother, tirelessly championing his cause and fighting tooth and nail for his rights.

The case of Patrick Polk underscores systemic flaws within the criminal justice system— flaws that disproportionately affect marginalized communities, particularly those grappling with mental illness. As the truth slowly comes to light, it is imperative that we heed the call for reform and stand in solidarity with those like Patrick Polk, whose voices are often drowned out by the cacophony of injustice.

Ali Rico Jabbar was born on October 26, 1980, in San Diego, CA, to Carrie Allen and Charles Miller McGee. He was the middle child of eight. Ali attended the San Diego Unified School District and played football for Valencia Park. Ali is affectionately known as “Bout-it” by his family and associates. He will be remembered for his generous heart. Ali was a fun energetic person who was full of life. Ali was known to be a comedian to his family. He would tell the best stories/jokes that would bring much laughter to his loved ones.

Ali was a man who knew God. He would say, “Blessed by the best.” He was a loving and caring father who was protective of his two children. Ali was a stylish person who loved to dress to impress. In addition, Ali also loved hanging out and socializing with others.

Ali Jabbar departed this life on February 18, 2024, at the age of 43. He will always be in our hearts and truly missed by his family.

Ali was preceded by his parents; Charles Miller McGee and Carrie Allen, and one brother, Meico McGee.

He leaves to cherish his two children; Malia Jabbar and Allah Rico Jabbar, five brothers; Ronald McGee, Donald McGee, Z.Z Jabbar, Andrew Luster, and David Jabbar, six sisters; Cheryl Blackmon (Brian), Dr. Linda Wilson Simon Ph.D., Parthenia McGee, Aesha Jabbar, Hana Jabbar, and Catrena Jabbar, and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives to mourn his passing.

James Hightower was born on September 15, 1943, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was the youngest of five children born to Annie Josephine Armstrong Hightower and Wilbur Vernon Hightower. James had a strong faith and accepted Christ into his life, and faithfully attended Mount Zion Baptist Church. James attended Little Rock Public School through his formative years and graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1961. He attended the only Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in the Arkansas University system at Arkansas Agriculture, Mechanical and Normal College (AM&N), which was renamed the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. James graduated from this historic institution with a Baccalaureate of Arts Degree of Music in 1965. That degree choice seemed perfect for him as he enjoyed singing and had a melodious voice. James went on to receive his Master of Arts Degree as well. After graduation, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, and taught in the Chicago School System. After retirement, James moved to San Diego, California, where he lived the remainder of his life.

On February 16, 2024, James left this life and entered his eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his parents; Wilbur Vernon Hightower Sr. and Annie Josephine Armstrong Hightower, and his brothers; Wilbur Vernon Hightower Jr. and Harry Lafayette Hightower.

Left to cherish his memory is his sister Dr. Ida Hightower Gregory-Barnes of San Diego, California, his brother George William Hightower and wife Anna Hightower of Berkeley, California, his two aunts; Mary Virginia Gans and Ora Narcisse Daniels of Little Rock, Arkansas, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

On Monday, August 1, 1967, a true warrior was born, James Tyree Washington III. I was the only child born to James Tyree Washington, Jr.and Barbara Jean Washington. I was their pride and joy.

I attended Chollas Mead Elementary School, Gompers Jr. High, and graduated from Lincoln High in 1985. While attending Lincoln, my best friends were Harry, Chris, and Ayinde. During my formative years I enjoyed playing baseball for Oak Park and football for Valencia Park, but the thing I loved to do the most was spending time with my family.

I was baptized by Pastor Doctor C. Johnson at our family church, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. At Mount Zion, I was busy singing in the choir and making friends. I was also a part of the Mt. Zion Youth Usher Board and the Jr. Brotherhood. As a child, I really loved to travel with Brother Hawthorn and Sister Hawthorn. Some of my greatest years were spent at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

I was known for going out of my way to make others happy. This was a part of my job at Roosevelt Jr. High School as a supervision and teachers assistant. I was loved by the students as well as the staff members. I also enjoyed writing; I always wrote letters to my mom and my grandmother Zephyr. That was one of the special ways I communicated with my two favorite ladies. My birth name is James, but I had several names as I grew older. I was known as little James, JT, and affectionately known as JJ. My street name was Green Eyes. I was a true sports lover; I enjoyed baseball, but football was my favorite. I truly enjoyed Super Bowl Sunday, and I enjoyed going to my Uncle Carl’s house to celebrate with him and his boys. Football and basketball playoffs gave us a reason to celebrate.

On February 15, 2024, I was called home to be with the Lord. I was preceded in death by my father James Washington, Jr., my maternal grandparents; Leonard and Zephyr LaGrone, Sr., and my paternal grandparents; James Washington Sr. and Roxiceola Cotton.

I leave behind to mourn my passing my beautiful mom Barbara Jean Washington of San Diego, California, my three children; Kellen James Washington of Portland, Oregon, Shawnie Payton of San Diego, California, and Anthony Jackson of Los Angeles, California, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

I get up every day and take a breath. And start another day without you in it.

Jerry Franklin Lee was born on May 18, 1939, in Plainfield, New Jersey, to the late Jerry Miles and Mary Magdalene Holmes Lee. Jerry went to elementary school in Middlesex County in Locust Hill, Virginia. He and his sister Velma lived there with their grandparents until they moved back to Plainfield, New Jersey, where Jerry graduated from Plainfield High School in 1958.

Jerry dedicated his life to serving his country in the United States Navy. He enlisted in 1961, at the early age of 22, and served with honor and distinction for 26 years before retiring as Chief Petty Officer in 1987. During his time in the Navy, Jerry was stationed at several locations around the world, most notably in Rota, Spain. He served on various ships and took part in many missions in his career.

He was married to the late Lucille Lettie Lee of Oxford, North Carolina, in April 1962. From this union, two children were born; Pamela Denise Lee and Lawrence Fitzgerald Lee. Jerry remarried to the late Doris Lee of San Diego, California, in January 1988.

After retiring from the Navy, Jerry was an active member of Mt. Erie Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, was on the Deacon Board, and a choir member. Jerry was an avid sports fan who loved watching the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jerry married the late Barbara Rowe Lee of San Diego in November 2012, with an extended family that includes Tanya Rowe, Ray Rowe, and the late Leatrice Rowe.

On February 23, 2024, Jerry Franklin Lee was called from labor to eternal rest. Left to cherish his loving memory is his daughter Pamela Denise Brown, his son Lawrence Fitzgerald Lee (Patrice), three grandsons; Eric Brown Jr., Diante Lee, and Elijah Brown, his granddaughter Taya Lee, great-grandson Braxton Lee, extended family; Tanya Rowe and Ray Rowe, his sister Velma Lee, niece Roberta Jean Lee, along with a host of relatives and friends.

CA Atty General Bonta Offers Tips to Safely File Taxes Issues Consumer Tax Alert for Californians

Through the IRS Direct File pilot program, eligible California taxpayers can file their 2023 federal taxes directly with the IRS for free.

“This Tax Season, we want to make sure Californians don’t fall victim to tax-related fraud or scams. I encourage Californians to review our website for tools, tips, and resources to make filing taxes easier and safer at oag. ca.gov/consumers. And if you believe you are the victim of a tax-related scam, report it at www.oag.ca.gov/report,” said Bonta.

How to Protect Yourself from Tax Scams:

• F ile early — You are less vulnerable to scammers if you file early and have your refund in hand.

• Hang up the phone! — IRS and FTB will only call a person who owes taxes if they have tried to contact you by mail. Legitimate IRS and FTB agents will not threaten jail time or seek payment over the phone or through a wire transfer. Make no payments and contact the agency directly by looking up government contact information online. Calls impersonating the IRS should be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). Those impersonating the FTB should be reported at www.ftb.ca.gov .

• D o NOT open the email — Never open an email or text message that says it is from the IRS or the FTB. The IRS and FTB do not use email, text message, or social media to request personal or financial information or to send notice regarding audits or refunds. Replying to the email, opening attachments, or clicking on links may enable scammers to collect your personal information or infect your computer with viruses or other malware.

• Think beyond the password — For greater security, get an Identity Protection PIN

(IP PIN) for your e-filing account with the IRS. A new PIN is provided each year by the IRS.

• Use two-step authentication — Check on the availability of two-step authentication to protect your tax filing accounts (such as email and social media accounts), such as a one-time use code that is sent to you by email, phone, or text. You enter that code, along with your username and password, to get access to your account.

County Announces Transition Plan for Emergency Temporary Lodging Program Participants

The Emergency Temporary Lodging Program was created as a bridge to provide temporary housing to those that have been displaced by the January floods. To be considered, apply to FEMA by calling the hotline at 1-800-621-3362 or go to disasterassistance.gov/.

If you are no longer eligible, letters will go out starting Tuesday, April 2nd stating “reservation will expire in seven days.” All households have been grouped into one of three categories: those who need to transition from the program within seven days, 14 days, and those who can remain in the program up to May 11:

Those transitioning within seven days are households that are:

• Not on record

• Violated the code of conduct

• Did not have proper documentation or did not submit proof of claim filed to homeowners or renters’ insurance

Those transitioning within 14 days are those who:

• R eceived notification from FEMA that their home is safe to move back into. Many are working toward finding a suitable place to stay with FEMA disaster aid and may stay up to May 11. The County is providing a resource packet with letters that will notify them of the transition. Call 858-715-2255 as soon as possible for additional information.

County Opens New Online Public Records Request Center

The OG Sandbox Organization hosted their annual Easter egg hunt and giveaway last Saturday morning at historical Mountain View Park.

The excitable youngsters were treated to goodie bags, popcorn, cotton candy, hotdogs, and colorful plastic eggs filled with treats.

The big hunt also included some golden eggs containing cash money.

"We were very concerned about the weather and thought about canceling and changing to another date." OG Sandbox president Aaron Gibson shared. "However we're able to pull it off and the kids really enjoyed it, you should have seen all the hugs I got today from the kids and parents, if we can bring some joy to some lives for a day that's what's up."

Somali Bantu Association of America (SBAOA) hosted its annual Ramadan Iftar Dinner at the United Domestic Workers location last week as a means of sharing their rich heritage with the community during a very special time. The special time is this year's Ramadan celebrations. Ramadan is the ninth month of the islamic Calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. This year's celebration, which follows a lunar calendar, coincided with the Christian observance of Lent, also a time of fasting, abstinence and reflection. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. The meal, which breaks the fast at sunset, is called Iftar and it's done with friends and family as a celebration. It was with that spirit that the Somali Bantu Association invited community to share the Iftar with them which is done annually. The organizers’ state the purpose of the invitation is to foster unity and strengthen bonds within the community. The dinner provides a means of promoting understanding, harmony and solidarity among community members. The dinner itself provides delicious and culturally significant foods creating a memorable dining experience. The evening provided everything the guests intended and it was an honor to be included in the celebration.

Local residents were also invited to hang out with the sandbox crew, watch the festivities, and enjoy some of Pit-Master Darnell Meal's tasty BBQ Hot Links.

The Neighborhood House Association (NHA) recently marked its 110year anniversary with a Kickoff event last week at the historic Marston House Museum and Gardens. Mayor Todd Gloria, other elected officials, business, and community leaders were present at the historical site to honor NHA’s rich legacy of service to the San Diego community and look ahead to the agency’s bright future.

The event marked the beginning of NHA’s year-long celebration honoring over a century of service and support to the San Diego community, cementing NHA’s rich legacy of empowering and advocating for individuals and families.

Before last weekend’s low-key rainstorm interrupted the big Easter Egg Hunt at Memorial Park, kids were able to get some fun in and enjoy a traditional Easter egg hunt. Thanks to the Partners Outreach Organization and their numerous connections, the busy kids at the park were treated to an array of Easter activities.

“We knew we might have a weather situation so we got busy and kept things moving as fast as possible and made sure these kids were able to have a great time,” Jesse Wilson of Partner Outreach shared.

“Helping the kids, that’s what we are all about, the food, prizes, candy, and cash were free for all the youngsters.”

There were so many treats from all comers, some kids had to have multiple bags to secure their Easter bounty.

Association Celebrates 110 Years at Kickoff Celebration

NHA President and CEO Rudy Johnson noted, “A future goal of the Neighborhood House Association (NHA) is building a continuum of care model that will deliver our youth (we serve today) into our workforce 25 years from now.”

Johnson noted that NHA is proud to be an “economic engine in the local economy.” He cited the more than 800 full-time jobs NHA has generated in San Diego County.

“These employment opportunities not only provide livelihoods for hundreds of individuals but also contribute to the overall economy of our region,” he said.

Throughout the years NHA has grown to become one of the largest nonprofit social services agencies in San Diego County, offering over 25 programs ranging from early childhood development to mental health services, senior services, and more. SD Social Club Syndicate’s Easter Egg Hunt

Saturday, March 30th, 2024, the San Diego Social Club Syndicate, and the Greater Skyline Community Outreach hosted its 12th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event was held at the Skyline Hills Recreation Center on Skyline Drive. There was music, food, games, prizes, a bounce house, and plenty of Easter eggs to be discovered for chil dren 12 and under. The free food was sponsored by the Chicken Shack on Wheels.

The rain couldn’t stop the festivities. The appre ciative children lined up to receive their Easter baskets full of goodies and delicious food. “Rain or shine, we are here to give back to the community,” said the owner of the Chicken Shack.

Syniqua Porter, cochairperson of the San Diego Social Club Syndicate had this to say: “As an organization, being a part of the social clubs giving back to the community is a big deal for us. We also want to erase the stigma of social clubs and motorcycle clubs being portrayed in a negative light. We want it to be known that we’re here to give and show love to the community.”

With the tragic recent flooding this community faced, it was good to see the rain bear gifts as well this time, and all the families felt and appreciated the love. San Diego Social Club Syndicate pledges to continue this annual event for as long as they exist.

How to Raise a Healthy, Active Child Similarities and Differences Between Flu and COVID-19

Many factors impact your child or teen’s wellness, including where you live, genetics and other influences. According to experts though, you can encourage a healthy lifestyle for your child, and help prevent obesity and other illnesses that can extend into adulthood.

“Raising a healthy, active child is about much more than nutrition and physical activity,” says Natalie D. Muth, a pediatrician and registered dietician. “It also entails adequate sleep, a positive approach to screen use and social-emotional wellness, and to the best of your ability, helping ensure your surrounding environment supports healthy routines.”

Here are some practical tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that you can use to tackle issues within your control:

• Learn about good nutrition.

• R each for water. Ideally, aim fo r one sugary drink or fewer per week. Bonus: drinking water cleanses teeth and gums, preventing cavities now while setting the stage for lifelong dental health.

• Limit ultra-processed foods. It may not be realistic to avoid ultraprocessed foods altogether, but try to limit their access and help children and adolescents learn the benefits of eating whole foods like fruits and vegetables.

• Adopt a family media plan. Every-

one benefits from sensible screen time limits that make room for healthy activities. Engage kids in creating a plan for the whole family.

• M ove more. Make it a priority and kids benefit. Organized sports aren’t the only option. Your family can also enjoy walking, biking, swimming and dancing.

• M anage stress. Consider what you can let go. Rest rebuilds the body’s systems after the challenges of a tough day or week, so reserve time for it.

• Lean on support. Not all neighborhoods have safe places for children to play and walk to school, or offer nutritious and affordable food nearby. Additionally, factors like racism, toxic stress, housing or food insecurity and safety risks can impact your child’s health. Creating a safe environment at home, and leaning on the support of schools, health care systems and the wider community can create a healthier life for your child. One important resource is your pediatrician. Talk to them about ways to support an active, healthy lifestyle for your child.

• P eople can begin spreading the virus 2-3 days before their symptoms begin, but infectiousness peaks one day before symptoms begin.

• On average, people are considered contagious for about eight days after their symptoms begin.

Complications

Similarities: B oth COVID-19 and flu can result in complications, including:

• Pneumonia

• Respiratory failure

• A cute respiratory distress syndrome (fluid in the lungs)

• S epsis (a life-threatening illness caused by the body’s extreme response to an infection)

• Cardiac injury (for example, heart attacks and stroke)

• M ultiple-organ failure (respiratory failure, kidney failure, shock)

• W orsening of chronic medical conditions (involving the lungs, heart, or nervous system or diabetes)

• I nflammation of the heart, brain, or muscle tissues

• Secondary infections (bacterial or fungal infections that can occur in people with flu or COVID-19)

Differences:

Flu

• Most people will recover on their own in a few days to two weeks, but some will experience severe complications, requiring hospitalization. Secondary bacterial infections are more common with influenza than with COVID-19.

• Diarrhea is more common in young children with flu than in adults with flu.

West African Philosopher Who Challenged Colonialism Leaves Major Legacy

Paulin Jidenu Hountondji of Benin, West Africa - considered one of the founding fathers of modern African philosophy - has recently passed away. He was 82 years of age.

He rebelled against efforts to force African ways of thinking into European concepts, developing a critique of what he called “ethnophilosophy.”

Hountondji was an early critic of the book “Bantu Philosophy” by the Belgian missionary Placide Tempels which for nearly 30 years had set the tone for African philosophy. Tempels’ book, published in 1945, was seen by a first generation of pre-independence African intellectuals as groundbreaking - restoring intellectual dignity to a continent viewed as “primitive'' in the colonialist world-view.

His work “On African Philosophy” (1976) greatly contributed to clarify ing the debate over African philosophy - freeing it from the colonial perspec tive that considered African metaphysics a set of mythological beliefs.

Hountondji was the first African admitted as a philosophy student at the most prestigious school in France - the École Normale Superieure. His work shaped the study of philosophy in Africa and became a kind of second declaration of independence for Africa in the view of the African philosophers who followed him.After the passing of renowned Ghanaian philosopher Kwasi Wiredu in early 2022, Hountondji was considered “Africa’s greatest living philosopher”. A modest man who spent his career teaching in African universities, mostly at Benin’s national university, Hountondji believed there was something amiss in efforts by Europeans to tell Africans how they should think about their place in the universe.

But in a series of essays collected in the book “African Philosophy: Myth and Reality” (published in 1976 in French and in 1983 in English), Mr. Hountondji demolished the Belgian priest’s work as no more than ethnographic racist musings that ultimately bol stered colonialism.

“Indeed,” wrote Hountondji, “Bantu Philosophy did open the floodgates to a deluge of essays which aimed to reconstruct a world view attributed to all Africans… But on closer scrutiny it is clear Father Tempels’ work is not addressed to Africans but to Europeans, particularly missionaries… for whom he closes his book with a chapter titled ‘Bantu philosophy and our mission to civilize.’ “In effect, (with Tempel’s book) we are back to square one: Africans are, as usual, excluded from the discussion and the Black man remains a topic, a voiceless face under private investigation, an object to be defined and not the subject of a possible discourse.”

Among the many tributes and condolences since his passing on Feb. 2 at his home in Cotonou, Benin, was this from the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) where he served as vice president:

“Born on April 11, 1942, Professor Hountondji became a towering intellectual figure and distinguished scholar who shaped the discipline of philosophy by advancing unparalleled insights and elaborating new thinking in the field of African philosophy. “Even after achieving academic and intellectual acclaim, and long after obtaining a doctorate from the University of Paris-Nanterre in 1970, Professor Hountondji remained a lifelong student, continuing on to earn his doctorat d’Etat at l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop under the supervision of Professor Souleymane Bachir Diagne.” “To this day, his contributions within the CODESRIA and the broader epistemic community remain immeasurable.”

‘Over my dead body!’

That was how one Gambian woman expressed her frustration with a vote by the country’s majority male legislators to end the prohibition of female genital mutilation (FGM). The practice has been on the rise in recent years despite activist campaigns to outlaw it.

Lawmaker Almameh Gibba presented the repeal bill earlier this month, arguing the ban violates citizens' rights to practice their culture and religion. Gambia is an overwhelmingly Muslim country. If the bill is passed, Gambia would become the first country to reverse a ban on FGM.

The vote comes just a month after the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, observed annually on Feb. 6. This year it was observed with the theme “Her Voice, Her Future.” Gambian lawmakers have already voted to advance the measure that removes legal protections in effect since 2015 for millions of girls.

Ndeye Rose Sarr, head of the local United Nations Fund for Population Activities, shared some of the historical background: “From the age of 10, girls begin to be looked at as a potential bride for an older man. And if she has not yet undergone FGM, there will be those in her community who will want to make sure that she does.”

The rate of FGM in The Gambia is around 76 percent of women in the 14 to 49 year age range, and about 51 per cent for girls up

to the age of 14. “That means that, on average, every other young girl you see in The Gambia has undergone this mutilation,” Sarr said.

Globally, over 200 million women and girls are estimated to have undergone some form of genital mutilation and girls aged 14 and younger account for about 44 million of those who have been “cut.”

The practice is almost universal in Somalia, Guinea and Djibouti, with levels of 90 per cent or higher, while it affects no more than 1 percent of girls and women in Cameroon and Uganda.

Contrary to popular perception, female genital mutilation is also practiced in the U.S. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half a million women and girls have either undergone, or are at risk of undergoing the procedure in the future. Most, but not all, are immigrants to the U.S.

The ban was put in place during the tenure of former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, whose government opposed the practice. Isatou Keita, writing for the online publication Semafor, had this to say about FGM. “From my perspective as a Gambian woman, banning FGM is highly commendable… As a staunch advocate for human rights and gender equality, I firmly believe that every individual has the right to live free from violence, coercion, and discrimination, including harmful cultural practices like FGM.”

Pineapple Farm In Kenya Linked To Violence Against Workers

Del Monte Kenya, a vast pineapple farm in Thika, Kenya, is facing serious claims of human rights abuses in the wake of killings and violence against workers allegedly by its security guards.

The Guardian newspaper of London first broke the story in June 2023 with its expose of multiple deaths by the private security apparatus employed by Del Monte to safeguard its crop from thieves. Locals accused the guards of killing nine men aged twenty-two to fifty-two, as well as five rapes, plus allegations of head wounds, broken bones and cuts from blades requiring stitches.

The British law firm Leigh Day is representing 134 people who say they were abused by Del Monte's guards. The accusations include

beatings with no regard for the lives, wellbeing or human dignity of their victims, the law firm maintains.

The company has denied the charges. A Del Monte Kenya spokesperson said the case filed in the Kenyan high court was “an opportunity for all parties to present evidence – rather than unsubstantiated allegations – in a public forum and we trust that those proceedings will reveal the truth and vindicate our good name”.

A report by the Kenya-based Partner Africa called on the company to immediately provide remediation to those whose rights were violated. It also recommends that the company set out a human rights action plan. Partner Africa’s nonprofit mission is to improve the working conditions and livelihoods of vulnerable workers and producers in Africa.

rights in supply chains, commented: “We believe any company of the size and scope of Del Monte should have human rights expertise in their team to advise management, help the company stay abreast of best practice, work with wider stakeholders and deliver on a company’s commitments to customers.”

The company with headquarters in Walnut Creek, California, employs 6,000 people in Kenya but also operates in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia with products sold in more than 80 countries.

Five of the company’s former guards alleged in interviews with the Guardian that a lack of training and Del Monte’s poor relationship with local people had fueled violent clashes with trespassers on the farm. Since the Guardian and TBIJ’s initial investigation was published in June, there have been another five deaths allegedly linked to guards at the farm.

Four of those men went to steal pineapples from the plantation near Thika. Their bodies were recovered from a river on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day last year after they were allegedly chased by guards. Del Monte Kenya said the men had gone into the river themselves and that there had been “no foul play”.

Following the Guardian’s reports, major UK supermarkets Tesco and Waitrose have removed Del Monte’s Kenyan pineapples from their shelves.

ASSASSINATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

On April 4, 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee as he stood on the second floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel. The assassination became a catalyst for civil unrest, and many took to protests to express their grief and anger, some turning violent.

President Lyndon B. Johnson condemned the assassination of Dr. King and initiated a series of legislative acts that many believed would improve conditions for African Americans in the inner cities. The King assassination riots added to the numerous riots that occurred in Los Angeles, California, such as the Watts Riots in 1965, damaging many city’s economies.
