ANNUAL REPORT
FISCAL YEAR 2021
OF PHILANTHROPY
There’s never a lack of interesting things to learn from our mates, scientists or our peers. As we continue to learn in our second phase of the sea component, the shadow phase, it’s easy to see how far we have to go. There is still so much to learn, and yet it’s hard to believe
how far we’ve come....”
ISABELLE STEWART, GETTYSBURG COLLEGE C-297
LEADERSHIP MESSAGE Reflecting on the past year summons up vivid memories of the pandemic and reminds us of the ongoing challenges the world faces. Looking back, however, also encourages us as we think of the amazing power we harnessed as a collective force. At Sea Education Association (SEA), we made major adjustments to our sails and modified our programming so we could continue to provide our students with the opportunity to learn both about themselves and our oceans, and to inspire them to be ocean scholars, stewards, and leaders. For us, perhaps the most defining challenges came in April 2020 when our spring undergraduate programs, Marine Biodiversity & Conservation, and Pacific Reef Expedition, were cancelled. In-person summer programs later suffered the same fate, as we cancelled Protecting the Phoenix Islands as well as our two high school programs, SEASCape and SEA Expedition. Then on July 1st, we were forced to partially furlough most of our staff until January 2021. Despite the many obstacles, SEA staff, crew, faculty, trustees, overseers, and donors galvanized our collective passions, talents, creativity, and generosity both to strategize and launch new and modified programs and keep our annual fund strong. As for silver linings in FY 21, gratefully, we’ve seen several. Since July 2020, we’ve conducted ten programs and worked with over 200 students! We created a successful new remote high school program that we will continue to offer, post-pandemic. We were able to secure two federal CARES Act PPP loans to offset revenue loss for which we are in the process of applying for forgiveness. Gratefully, as of April 2021 our staff have returned to full-time employment with SEA. With the support of a generous donor, we established a new endowed scholarship fund for high school students from diverse backgrounds. This led to our formulating a partnership with the Urban Assembly Harbor School, a unique public high school in New York City that attempts to relate every aspect of its curriculum with the water. We developed a process by which to engage other schools and organizations eager to identify students appropriate for this scholarship. While we continue to actively raise money for this endowed fund, other donors provided immediate-use scholarship support sufficient to fully fund four high school students for the second session of our summer 2021 Science at SEA program. Despite the pandemic and
the uncertainty it continues to present to nonprofits and individuals, we exceeded our annual fund goal for FY 21. That’s thanks to you, our loyal donors. Without a doubt, this unprecedented pandemic and its impact on SEA have reminded us of the importance of teamwork, and how vital it is to work together as shipmates to find creative solutions to unforeseen events. We thank you for being our shipmates—your support continues to see us through and ensure our ability to attain our important mission. Thank you for helping us shift from a year of uncertainty to resilience.

SEA is poised to emerge stronger than ever, in full sail, as we enter a milestone in our history. 2021 marks the beginning of our Semi-Centennial year! SEA is observing its 50th birthday. Founded Peg Brandon, W-48 in 1971, with our first student program launching in January 1972, we have a lot to celebrate. A birthday like this is an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come and remember those visionaries who led the way, and also imagine and solidify the framework for how we’ll continue launching leaders for generations to come. In the coming months, we look forward to celebrating your important page in SEA’s history. Thank you for your ongoing support and unwavering commitment to our important mission. Thank you.

Henry L. and Grace Doherty Chair of Ocean Studies was established in 2017 to support a new faculty chair, and allow SEA to continue to recruit and retain world-class faculty, scientists, and captains. SEA seeks to double the initial grant of $1 million. Walter and Kiyoko Brown Philip and Kathleen McKnight
The following endowments generously support students who would not otherwise be able to attend SEA.
Established in 2020
Samuel V. Howe High School Diversity was established in memory of Armin E. Elsaesser III – sailor, educator, adventurer – by his family and friends. The goal of the Fellowship is to help a member of the SEA community – alumni, crew, faculty or staff – follow a dream that has been elusive because of work or study. Projects involve active investigation in a marine-related subject and reflect a creative and independent approach to the pursuit of knowledge. Income from this fund is used to annually support one Elsaesser Fellow. Elsaesser Fellowship Fund
Ford and Jean Elsaesser J. Phillip and Amy Lee
established by the family of former SEA captain and current trustee John Wigglesworth, W-5, in honor of SEA doctor Bill Hallstein, whose medical expertise and advice help ensure the safety of students and crew at sea. Proper training, funded by this endowment, is vital to maintain safety standards.
Scholarship was created to allow students from diverse backgrounds to attend SEA’s high school summer programs, and reflects SEA’s commitment to increase scholarships for students of color and to deepen our connections to the institutions that serve them. SEA is seeking donor support for scholarships for the summer of 2022 and beyond. Jacob and Barbara Brown Peter Cheimets, W-7, and Karen Benedek Eder Family Foundation Lindsay, C-137, and Graham Ernst

IN KIND SEA is immensely grateful for the support it received from partner maritime institutions who provided critical docking services during the pandemic. We are also forever indebted to our medical advisors, whose guidance was critical in assuring the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff and crew. University of South Florida St. Petersburg Maritime Museum of San Diego Dr. William Hallstein Dr. John Cahill, W-98 In-kind gifts are non-cash contributions of goods or services. To help donors make the best in-kind gift to SEA, we ask that you first contact us to determine if the items or services are consistent with our mission, support our core programs and special projects, and meet our current needs.

There have been so many incredible moments to define this trip, but today there were two moments when the collective Corwith Cramer stoke tank was absolutely overflowing: two giant basking sharks swimming along with us and whales lifting their tails out of the water to wave hello to all those who tried their hand at whale communication. It’s crazy to think how much has happened in these past five weeks. As
we reflect on the things that we’ve loved and what we’ll miss, we feel grateful for this opportunity and that the class of C-297’s journey doesn’t end here.”
