First, thank you all very much for taking the time to participate in the Fall 2021 Member Survey and provide us with invaluable feedback. After reading through the results and open-ended comments, the team has begun focusing on the critical areas that will have the greatest impact on your enjoyment in 2022. (We are reviewing professional research companies to partner with on our next survey and will keep you updated.) I do hope that you have seen some improvements over the past couple of months that speak to some of your feedback. From cleanliness and organization, to higher and more frequent levels of communication, a number of your concerns are already being addressed. Over the next 3-6 months you will see initiatives that focus on Staff Service & Culture Training, Members’ First Mentality, More Amenities Open, Stretching Our Season Where Viable, F&B Elevation and Consistency, Experiential Programming, and an Investment in Our Future.

Leveraging Our Greatest Asset: “Members Matter” As the team here prepares for the upcoming season, I wanted to share a few new things you can expect at your Club. First, we have a few projects underway in which you will see changes in our amenities, as well as in the offerings. Racquet Sports Complex This is our number one priority, where we will spend the most capital in 2022. We have a land planner currently assessing what is possible over the next decade, with a goal in 2022 of addressing much needed pickleball courts and a refurbishment of the Clubhouse. Golf Veranda This is where you will be able to enjoy beer, a glass of wine, and an expanded deck while ordering food from the Island House kitchen. We will be expanding the veranda by 40%, adding some new furniture and a Pour My Beer & Wine Self-Serve Wall for your enjoyment. This is just one more area for Members to enjoy all the Club has to offer. Cap’n Sams’ Grill This summer, get ready for an enhanced menu featuring our new wood-fired brick pizza oven. This fantastic addition will cook one pizza every 90 seconds. Even better, the dough we have been testing is top notch! We are also adding machines for frozen drinks that you can add your favorite topper to. Pelican’s Nest Our goal is to become a seafood-forward restaurant that emphasizes freshness. We are also excited to announce that we will be building a raw bar in 2022 that features fresh shrimp and oysters. We will still be open through October, and during season, we will have “members-only” nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ocean Terrace Once season is upon us in June, we should have a new look and feel. Inside we will enjoy a nice refurbishment, while outside you will have “members-only” tables, chairs, and lounges. Thirsty? Well, we will have an 8-Tap Pour My Beer & Wine station for your enjoyment, as well.

Members-Only Enhancements Beach Club We are very excited about having “members-only” access to the Beach Club starting at 9 AM, in advance of renters access at 10 AM. We also are rolling out a Towel Dispensing and Tracking Machine in which member towels are complimentary. (Renters will pay $5 per day). In the months of June, July, and August, we will be having a campus-wide F&B party in which we will feature different culinary experiences at Pelican’s Nest, Cap’n Sams’, and Ocean Terrace. These will be “members-only” events. Ocean Terrace Dates are forthcoming for a “members-only” evening party with food, beverage, and live music Island House Once the Pelican’s Nest opens seven days a week, the Palmetto Room and Bohicket’s Lounge will be “membersonly” access after 5 PM, featuring live music on Saturday nights. As things start heating up in June you should see evidence of some of these changes—as well as a number of “members-only” programming designed to take good care of our most prized asset: “you.” We hope that you agree the path we have chosen should put us in a great position to not only address your concerns, but also elevate the member experience and build intrinsic value. Daniel Doyle Named New Club Executive Chef We are thrilled to announce Daniel Doyle has joined the Seabrook Island Club team as our new executive chef. In this important role he oversees all culinary operations at the Club, including The Palmetto Room, Bohicket Lounge, The Pelican’s Nest, Osprey Café, and Cap’n Sams’ Grill. Chef Doyle is an award-winning chef with two decades of experience and a passion for innovative Southern cuisine. A graduate of Johnson & Wales, he served as the executive chef and managing partner of Poogan’s Porch in downtown Charleston. In 2012, he was first invited to cook at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City — and returned four additional times. Most recently, he was the culinary director of the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. “I have always loved the nature and beauty of John’s Island. My first sous chef job was actually at Rosebank Farms Café and I’ve always wanted to get back to this area,” he explains. His media credits include the Food Network’s Chopped, the Travel Channel, BBC Canada, USA Today, and Sirius XM, to name a few. With a culinary style he describes as “classic food with modern interpretations”, Chef Doyle is looking to “create an innovative and contemporary dining experience for our Members”. He takes pride in locally sourcing meat, produce, and grains. “Fresh food and a fresh approach to traditional southern dishes, that’s a key focus,” he promises. Some fun facts about our new executive chef: “I am newly remarried father of four. I love the beach, college sports, and music trivia.” Welcome Chef Doyle!

The Racquet Club is already starting the spring season at full force. Our pros and staff are preparing and getting ready to provide Members with the best service possible and we want you to be able to make full use of your benefits as a Member. At the Racquet Club, Full Members and Social Members have the benefit of reserving courts and booking lessons/ clinics thirty days in advance. Community Members can book courts, lessons, and clinics seven days in advance. Unimproved Lot Memberships can book three days in advance. Make sure to use your membership benefits to your advantage as we move into a busier season. Barrier Islands Fundraiser
On March 25, the Racquet Club will host its annual Barrier Islands Social and Fundraiser. The event supports the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic efforts to provide free medical services for low-income families and individuals who live on Johns Island, Wadmalaw Island, and James Island. Without their assistance, many adults would not receive treatment or be able to undergo expensive testing and exams. The event will take place from 2 – 4 PM at the Racquet Club. Brenda Falls, the Director of the BIFMC, will be present as a guest speaker to explain the clinic’s efforts. Donations are encouraged as we come together to help our local community. Please call the Racquet Club Pro Shop if you have any questions on how to donate to this great cause.

PTR L1 Certification Hosted by Seabrook Island Racquet Club
On March 5 and 6, the Racquet Club was the home of a L1 PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) workshop. The workshop included our Head Tennis Professional Babar Akbar, our Assistant Tennis Professional Klein Evans, and many other coaches from all over the East Coast. The two-day workshop was hosted by Milena Stephens, the PTR Director of Education, and Laura Ferreira, our Director of Racquet Sports. Continuous education for all of our staff is one of our top goals at the Racquet Club. We hope to keep improving and expanding our knowledge to provide our Members with the best, most up-to-date coaching sessions anywhere.
Benefits of Low Compression Balls (Red, Orange, and Green) for Adult Tennis
Keeping Score in Pickleball Doubles
Low-compression balls are mostly linked to Junior Tennis. There are three main types of low compression balls: red, orange, and green. In recent years, studies have shown that introducing low-compression balls in coaching adults helps accelerate the learning curve and create better technical habits. Let us look at the different low compression balls and their benefits.
Keeping score in pickleball is more like the old way of scoring in volleyball. The only way to earn a point is on your own serve. As most sports have moved to a simpler scoring method, the method of scoring in pickleball adds more challenge to the game.
Red-dot balls are larger in size and have 25% compression of a regular yellow ball. Red-dot balls are used for beginner players and juniors, ranging from five to seven years old. The bounce height is much lower and essential for developing an effective grip. The ball also travels slower through the air, giving beginners and young players more time to track the ball. Orange-dot balls are the same size as a regular yellow ball, however with 50% less compression. The bounce height is also conducive to developing effective grips, while the traveling speed of the ball through the air is faster. The green-dot balls are the closest to a regular yellow ball. The diameter is the same but the ball has 75% less compression. The bounce will be slightly lower to a yellow regulation ball. The main difference will be felt on the weight of the ball. The green ball is still lighter than a yellow ball, allowing players who do not have strong grip strength to feel comfortable during the contact point between the racquet and the ball itself. If your coaches introduce a low-compression ball at your adult tennis session, don’t feel skeptical about it. Lower compression balls have been used more and more often these days. You will often see them during beginner clinics and private lessons when a coach is working on a specific technical skill correction, or even during cardio tennis sessions.
In doubles, you start by serving from the right side of the court diagonally to the opposite court. If you win a point, you switch to the left, and then back again to the right, and so on. After you lose a point on serve, the serve moves to your partner, who keeps serving until they lose a point on serve. When both players have lost their serves, it is called “side out” and then the opposing team serves. This pattern continues through the game until someone gets to 11. The scoring can be tricky to learn in the start, but it is designed to give clear information on the score and who is serving. The score is called out as three numbers. The first number is the serving team’s score. The second number is the receiving team’s score, and the third number is the server number 1 or 2, depending on whether or not it’s the first teammate (1) or the second teammate (2). For example, if the score is 3-1-2, then the serving team is winning 3 to 1 and the second person is serving. If the serving team loses the point, the serve will move on to the opposing team. To keep the game fair and minimize the advantage for the team serving first, the first team starts 0-0-2. This means if the serving team loses a point, the serve switches over to the other side. Scooby is an eighteen-year-old chestnut quarter horse, with a lot of trail riding experience. He is already taking trail rides and we hope to have him out on the beach soon. Spring Golf Events Spring golf has arrived at the Club, and I hope you’ve been able to get out on our two beautiful, superbly conditioned courses. The spring event schedule is in full swing, and we’ve played some exciting tournaments already. A SILGA 9 & Wine, Fun Friday, and a SILGA Interclub at Briar’s filled the February schedule along with some very competitive Four-Ball matches amongst the MGA and SILGA. The MGA Four-Ball Ringer was the biggest event of the month - enjoyed by a full field of 84 players in late February. Two teams stole the show by playing the best golf and posting the lowest 18-hole scores over two days on Crooked Oaks. Dave Garvey chipped in from off the green on the last hole, much to the delight of his partner, Ron Moffitt, to finish the tourney at -14 and in first place one shot ahead of the runner-up team. Mac McDonald and partner Burt Schoffman scorched the field to win low gross by firing -7 off the stick and -13 net, only one shot behind winners Garvey and Moffitt. Midge Fleming (pictured right) made her first hole in one on the first shot hit with her new Callaway heaven wood, February 1, on #9 of Crooked Oaks. She holed the shot from 116 yards, and it was witnessed by Denise Kotva, Pam Dittloff, and Cindy Zock. Rob Weber, son of member Jack Weber, made his first hole in one on February 9, the day after taking a lesson from Martin. With a pitching wedge, he aced the 15th hole on Ocean Winds from 110 yards. The shot was witnessed by his father, Dr. Jack Weber. Rich Boss scored his first hole in one Saturday, February 12. He aced the 13th hole on Crooked Oaks from 123 yards with an 8 iron. Charlie Septer and Jim Kindley witnessed the shot. Ron Moffitt aced the 13th hole on Crooked Oaks Tuesday, March 1. Member Responsibilities When Playing Golf Please remember that we own our courses and, as owners and stewards, we are responsible for doing our part to keep them as pristine as possible. We each have personal responsibilities to the Club and each other to ensure everything runs smoothly for each Member and guest. Every time you play or practice, please remember the following:

Ensure all players in your group are registered on the tee sheet by the day before play, which will enable the bag room to have clubs loaded appropriately.
•
Maintain pace of play by always keeping up with the group ahead of you and please remember that the Club’s expectation is for a 4-hour round or LESS.
• •
Check-in with the Starter in the Starter’s House. Take responsibility for your guests: register them in the Pro Shop before going to the practice range and ensure they are dressed appropriately and observe proper etiquette at all times.
•
Contact the Pro Shop or notify the Starter/Marshall if you observe any player(s) not observing our rules and etiquette -- do not engage the player(s) directly.
•
Fill fairway divots, whether yours or someone else’s, with sand.
•
Keep all four wheels on the cart path at all times, especially near tees/greens and on all Par 3’s.
•
Do not drive the cart closer than 75 yards from the green.
•
Pick up litter, e.g., tees, wrappers, cigarette butts, plastic bottles, etc.
•
Always be friendly, helpful, and cordial to other Members, guests, and staff. Remember we are the Club.
•
Gently, firmly, and consistently remind other Members to do the same.
•
Repair ball marks on the green, yours and two others.
•
Reduce wear and tear on the course by driving your cart onto the fairway at a 90º angle to your ball and then driving in the fairway to your next shot, or exiting the fairway directly to the cart path.
•
Do not drive your cart between the white and green stakes or through areas where it could damage the course, e.g., dark wet grassy areas, marked areas, or within 75 yards of the green.
•
Enter/exit bunkers from the lowest entry point and rake the sand after playing your shot.
Doing Our Part: Fewer Plastic Bottles Last year, players on our Seabrook golf courses drank approximately 130,000 bottles of water. While we strongly encourage players to keep hydrated while playing, what becomes of all those used water bottles? •
Each plastic water bottle takes up to 1,000 years to decompose because they are photodegradable, not biodegradable.
•
While extensive effort is made by our golf, cart-barn, and maintenance teams to ensure the bottles are recycled, those we miss end up in landfills that are already overflowing with millions of tons of discarded plastic bottles.
•
These buried bottles leach harmful chemicals into our environment as they decompose, leak pollutants into our soil, and contaminate nearby water systems.
Seabrook Island Club wants to help change that. We have joined the world’s top golf clubs to reduce environmental issues caused by plastics. First, we installed water stations at each comfort station/restroom located on our courses. These offer ample cold water for all golfer. A running count of water bottles not used is maintained on each refill station. Second, we are making Members aware of this new service and encouraging you to bring your own reusable containers to refill. And most recently, during the cooler winter months, we cut back to two water bottles in each cart versus four, with the goal of dramatically reducing our plastic bottle use. Success here, of course, requires a change in behavior. We hope that you will be an early adopter. Please remember to refill your bottles using these water stations and encourage your playing partners to do the same for the benefit of everyone. Thank you, Seabrook Island Pro Shop 17
Robert Trent Jones' Impact on Augusta Did you know that while Alister MacKenzie rightfully gets the glory for Augusta’s routing, the man who created some of our most incredible memories was Robert Trent Jones ("RTJ")? Most people would agree that the Master’s drama begins with #11 and ends with the par 3 16th . Both holes are work RTJ did at the behest of Bobby Jones several years after the course opened. In 1948, RTJ redesigned #16, damming Rae’s Creek, rotating and lengthening a relatively poor par 3. Who can forget the excitement we associate with Jack’s charge in 1986 and Tiger’s chip-in from 2005. In 1950, RTJ lengthened #11 and moved it closer to water (a Bobby Jones anathema). This has led to several sudden-death memories, such as Larry Mize’s 1987 chip-in to sink Greg Norman, Faldo vs. Hoch in 1989, and Fuzzy Zoeller winning the first sudden-death playoff in 1979. Fun Fridays Last year, we started a 9 hole league we called “Fun Friday” and it has been a huge success for our Members seeking casual golf with each other. The format for these events is always a Captain’s Choice Scramble, with a twist to keep it interesting. Competition is offered for those who like to compete and points are awarded through the season for participation and for the weekly winners. Top point earners at the end of the season win additional prizes. We began the 2022 Fun Friday league in February with 60 players attending the first event. The time for transition is upon us as the staff looks to begin moving towards the spring green up and growth of the bermudagrass throughout the golf courses. The ryegrass has been very good and has provided an excellent winter and spring playing surface. As summer approaches, we need to do everything that we can to promote the bermuda growth and inhibit the rye growth. We do this in several ways; one is through the regular application of growth regulators to slow the ryegrass growth and the other is through the increasingly lower mowing heights. By slowing the growth and cutting the turf lower, sunlight is allowed to get down to where the bermudagrass is growing thus helping it to break dormancy and begin competing with the dominant rye. What this means for you as golfers is that the greens will speed up significantly and the fairways will roll out further on each drive. Additionally, the roughs will be lowered and are probably the most likely to face bermudagrass injury from the ryegrass, particularly in shaded areas. The staff will be monitoring these areas closely to see if there are additional actions needed to help the bermudagrass overcome the thick ryegrass without serious injury.

Brian Thelan and I recently shot a video with the help of the MGA on proper filling of divots and repair of ball marks. We also cover these important tasks in every new golf school. Filling divots and repairing ball marks are critical golf responsibilities that every golfer should perform. It is a part of being a good steward of your course and your game as it not only cares for your course but also leaves it in good shape for the next set up players to come along. Be on the lookout for the video and more instructional videos that will come out in the future. Another item that we would love to cover and remind players about is that we follow the 90-degree rule when driving to your golf ball to minimize wear of turf in highly traveled areas. Additionally, the white and green stakes are placed in areas that cart traffic is discouraged and thus we ask that you do not drive between them or over them. After hitting your shot, stay on the cart path until you get to where you ball is located on the course and turn 90 degrees off the path out to your ball. This will help to reduce the number of areas our staff has to repair while also providing better rough for you to hit out of. Golf carts have been a huge boon for the growth of golf, but they also are one of the greatest causes of damage to the turf on any course. A final housekeeping reminder is that bunker rakes are to be left outside of the bunkers and you should always exit a bunker from the low side.
A final note about course activities is that we are looking to add some new out-of-play natural areas that will not affect your golf game. In these areas we want to plant some ornamentals that attract butterflies as well as multiple bird species. This will continue our mission to promote wildlife and create areas that will enhance our environmental stewardship. These all align well with our standing as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Golf Pro Shop Spring is in the air. With warm weather approaching, now is the perfect time to update your golf wardrobe with some new spring and summer pieces. We have some fabulous collections arriving throughout the next couple of months in an exciting array of colors and styles. First up in the Pro Shop, for the gentlemen, a collection from Greyson. This high fashion brand has been gaining a ton of recognition in the golf community. They make some great fun prints in wonderful fabrications that can easily be worn on and off the course. This collection features a wide variety of colors, including purple, blue, pink, and even a hint of green. Also due to arrive soon, are a few of our Members’ favorites: Dunning, Johnnie-O, Holderness & Bourne, Under Armour, and Travis Mathew. Ladies, it was a tough winter keeping apparel in the shop for you due to supply issues, but fingers crossed we are out of the woods. We have many new spring collections on order for the next couple of months. One of those is a brand new collection from the luxury designer line, Kinona. They use lightweight Italian fabric which features UPF 50+ sun protection and moisture-wicking technology, perfect for warm days. The fabric is so buttery soft and light that it drapes perfectly without clinging. This collection will feature colors of bright pink, kelly green, and navy. In addition to the new Kinona line, you can expect to see Tail, Greg Norman, JoFit, and Nike. A couple of our winter outerwear collections (albeit late) are still arriving from Fairway & Greene and Footjoy. These pieces will come in handy for those chilly mornings and evenings we still may experience in March, or even April.

Racquet Club Pro Shop March and April are a great month for tennis and pickleball on Seabrook Island, as the weather teeters between warm and cool, usually landing somewhere in the middle to make it perfect.
Mark your calendars: Opening Day is April 1! And the shop looks incredible, as it got a little makeover during the winter. We are so excited for you to see the great items we have to offer this season. We will be featuring some great new clothing lines for the ladies. Tori Richards, Hatley, Cabana Life, and LJC Designs are a few of the new lifestyle brands we will be offering. As always, we will have a great selection of swimwear from Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Vince Camuto, Ann Cole, and Cosita Linda, just to name a few. We have a great selection of local gifts available this season: jewelry by Grit & Grace, candles by Wildwix, and hand-packaged teas and beverages by Oliver Pluff & Company (be sure to check out their Sangria mix). Cross Court, Tail, Lucky in Love, and Fila are just a few of the names that will be arriving in the Pro Shop over the next couple of months. Lucky in Love will feature fun, wild plaid prints, while the collections from Cross Court will be much more modest and simpler: one assortment will be in black and white while the other will be light grey and sherbet. If you are looking for something more in the middle, you may like the animalesque collection from Tail, featuring zebra and cheetah prints, in colors of yellow and cerulean. For the gentlemen, we are adding to our Adidas and Fila collection this spring, as well as K-Swiss in colors of Malibu and white. We are also adding an assortment of “Seabrook Island” t-shirts just before summer. Keep an eye out for our new bag collection by Oliver Thomas. These trendy colorful bags not only look great but are incredibly functional, with their durable washable fabric and the perfect number of pockets for all your needs. We are offering many different styles of bags, including pickleball bags. These are an absolute must have!
Osprey Café The Osprey Café will carry an exciting collection of drinkware this Spring. Don’t forget that if you bring in your own ‘Seabrook Island’ cup you will receive the small beverage price. The sessions will run Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2 - 3:30 PM.

Good to Know 20222022 Beach ClubCLUB & Pool Rules BEACH RULES 1. Use of the pool and beach facilities, at any time, is at the user’s risk.
10. Showers are required prior to entering the pool to remove suntan products.
2. Children under 12 years of age, and older children without the ability to swim on their own, must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Children 3 years of age or younger are not allowed in the large pool.
11. Children not toilet trained are required to always wear swim diapers in the Club’s pools and are not allowed in the large pool at any time. Members and guests who violate this policy will be charged $200 per violation to cover cleaning costs.
3. Swimming is permitted only during posted pool operating hours. Gates open for Members at 9 AM and renters at 10 AM.
12. Running, throwing balls, and noisy or hazardous activity are not be permitted in the pool area and adjacent beach area.
4. Smoking is not permitted inside the Beach Club and/ or pool areas.
13. Members, guests, and children may not sit or play on pool steps, which must be kept open.
5. Drinking glasses, glass bottles, and other glass objects are not permitted in the pool area or adjacent beach.
14. Diving is not permitted in any of the pools.
6. All Members, guests, and renters must use Club provided beach towels. You must have your amenity card to access the towels. Member towels are complimentary. Renters will pay $5 per towel. The towels are microchipped and if not returned that same day incur a $20 replacement fee. 7. Outside food and beverage is not permitted at the Beach Club and pool areas. All food and beverage must be purchased from the Club. 8. No coolers are permitted at the Beach Club or pool areas unless there is medical reason. These coolers must be approved by staff and tagged. 9. Members, their guests, and rental guests holding valid amenity cards may use the pool facilities and adjacent beach area at no charge. Identification will be requested by pool personnel. Club Members must carry membership cards, and unaccompanied guests of Members (including rental guests) must carry amenity cards as identification. Members can use the Club app on their phone to display their membership card.

15. Flotation devices are permitted for non-swimming children. Non-swimming children must be accompanied in the water by an adult guardian. Flotation devices should be attached to the child/ person (vest, backpack, water wings). 16. Audio devices (radios, iPods, etc.) may be used only with earphones in the pool area and adjacent beach. Music is provided for the Beach Club areas. 17. Persons using pool furniture are required to cover the furniture with a towel when using suntan products as these products damage the furniture. 18. At the pools, all food and beverages must stay within the designated areas, at least three feet from the pool edge. 19. Pets, other than service dogs, are not allowed in the pool area or adjacent beach. 20. Portable cabanas and tents are not be allowed in the Beach Club areas.
