SEA CREST SCHOOL Annual Report 2019

Curiosity Creativity Compassion Courage

Explore. Play. Learn. It is always impressive how much can be accomplished when we work together. In 2018-2019, we successfully completed a capital campaign and raised sufficient funds to put into action our plans for our re-imagined Outdoors. On the first day of this school year, we cut the ribbon and opened that space to the delight of pupils, staff and parents alike. On any one day, one can see gymnastics exercises on the Amphitheatre walls, serene moments in our Mindfulness Garden and just sheer exhuberant fun on the Field and Play Structure. Our teachers have been inspired to take classes outside, utilising all that the reImagined Outdoors has to offer, greatly increasing our ability to engage the children in hands-on and experiential learning. We are all eagerly looking forward to the first crop from our Vegetable Garden.

Our institutional theme this year is Explore.Play.Learn! Our activities epitomise this.

Last year, in response to market demand, we researched the viability of opening a Junior Kindergarten (JK) programme and as such spent a year researching it, including visiting other schools that had already incorporated JK into their structure. We decided that we would pilot JK this year if we were able to register 7 pupils. In August, with great excitement, we welcomed 14 four-year olds to Sea Crest’s first JK class. Over the course of the year, Sea Crest teachers attend workshops and conferences as part of modelling life-long learning. This expands their knowledge and directly increases their skills, keeping them current in modern teaching techniques. A particular emphasis has been on project-based learning, exploring how it could be used for differentiation in teaching so that education is personalised for each pupil. None of what we do at Sea Crest would be possible without the generosity of our families – both through volunteering and financial donations. Last year, 95% of our parents and 100% of our faculty, staff and trustees contributed to our Annual Fund. It was our highest participation ever and over 20% higher than the national average for independent schools. Thank you. The Sea Crest community is warm and welcoming. Our trustees are diligent stewards, our educators care deeply about the children in their care and our parents partner well with us. I am fortunate to walk this path with you as the leader of our school, a place where we fulfil our mission of helping children to engage curiosity, explore creativity, act with compassion and lead with courage. Gratefully Yours,

Dr. Tekakwitha M. Pernambuco-Wise Head of School

Safe and Nurturing Community One of my greatest joys of the 2018-2019 school year was reflecting on how truly grateful I am to be part of the Sea Crest community as I watched my own child graduate from Sea Crest School. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, Sea Crest School provides a safe, nurturing environment for students to build confidence, take risks, explore their interests and passions and become creative problem-solvers. Students are provided time and space to play, learn, collaborate, build strength of character and be leaders. Sea Crest students are joyful, advocate for themselves and others and are prepared to excel in high school and in life. Sea Crest families, teachers and administrators support each other and our community as whole. Over the 2018-2019 school year, with your generous donations, we transformed the Outdoor Space that will nurture our student’s social, physical and intellectual growth. We also created a Junior Kindergarten program to serve as a bridge between traditional preschool and elementary school, enabling our students to gain important foundational skills through engaging experiences, inquiry and play in a nurturing environment for learning and growth. Our teachers, staff and administrators participated in professional development seminars and conferences throughout the country learning the latest innovations in education. Sea Crest School has been very fortunate to find high quality teachers each year who are excited by our mission, vision and school culture. While we continue to see increasing challenges in the Bay Area when it comes to high cost of living, lack of affordable housing and teacher shortages, the Board and school administration are focused on doing everything we can to attract and retain high caliber teachers who believe in our mission and are invested in our school. The Board is equally committed to maintaining competitive tuition rates and developing a fully funded tuition assistance program, while striving to increase salaries for our faculty. We depend on the philanthropy of our community to achieve these goals and are thankful for your generosity. Each dollar raised through the Annual Fund, the Ginger Girvin Scholarship Run and at the Auction directly impacts our students. These funds enable Sea Crest to attract, retain and develop excellent teachers, deliver strong academic, enrichment and character programs, provide state of the art facilities and offer tuition assistance to as many families as possible. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank our inspiring and dedicated teachers and administration, generous donors, tireless volunteers, engaged parents, grandparents and enthusiastic students led by our extraordinary Head of School, Dr. Tekakwitha PernambucoWise. We are grateful for the many ways you have participated in and enriched Sea Crest School and its students. With gratitude,

Tanya Gulesserian Chair, Board of Trustees

Financially Healthy The key challenge for the Sea Crest’s Administration and Board of Trustees this 2018-19 academic year was in striking a balance between fiscal governance and a strategic outlook consistent with the school’s mission. On the one hand, the school must structurally adapt to a year of fewer students consistent with many independent schools in the Bay Area. Expenses were reduced by more than $400K compared to the prior year. On the other hand, the support of Sea Crest’s mission to provide the best in innovative education requires a strategic outlook focused on continuously improving. This year these improvements manifested in the form of fundraising and construction of the outdoor space and the creation of a Junior Kindergarten program at Sea Crest. We are pleased to report that the school remains financially healthy. As is the case every year, we rely on the support of our community to make up the difference between the real cost of providing a Sea Crest education and the revenues garnered from tuition. Thank you so much for your continuing generosity. Sea Crest ended the 2018-2019 academic year with 241 students compared with 279 students in 2017-18. The revenue resulting from this lower enrollment was $4.8M compared with the prior year’s $5.4M, 83% of which came directly from tuition and academic programs. Giving as a percentage of revenue was consistent with the prior year at 11% of revenues and once again enabled the school to bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of education. Charitable donations received from our school families and the Coastside community at large are invaluable to balance our budget. Salaries and benefits remain the largest expense at $3.7M of $4.8M overall. Total expenses incurred for the year were reduced to $4.8M compared to $5.3M for the prior year. This overall reduction helped to offset the year over year revenue change, and resulted in a minor operating loss of $15K (unrestricted). In support of the long term financial health of the school, Sea Crest holds significant financial reserves with $10.9M in total assets ($5.6M in the form of cash and cash equivalents). This is an increase from $10.7M in total assets as of June of 2018. Consistent with prior year, total liabilities were $6.0M and were largely comprised of $4.0M in long term debt and $1.7M in deferred revenue related to tuition collected for the subsequent school year. As we look forward to the remainder of this academic year, our financial focus will be towards developing business models useful for strategic planning and introducing key performance indicators to measure our progress. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your support. With appreciation,

Christopher Andrasick CFO

Sea Crest School Outdoors Campaign

THANK YOU

for helping us realize the dream of a re-imagined Outdoors for all of our students! Our new Outdoors: • • • • •

Frames and unifies our campus to provide our students the irreplaceable benefits of daily time outdoors. Nurtures our students’ social, physical and intellectual growth by providing a space designed for learning, exploration, adventure and wonder. Extends our unique teaching style beyond the classroom, while still letting our children be children.

Allows our students to run and play on the grass field, perform in the amphitheatre, let their imagination roam free in the creative free play area, find serene moments in the mindfulness garden and nurture the art of vegetable gardening. Completes the last major element in our master site plan.
