SEA CREST SCHOOL Annual Report 2018

Curiosity Creativity Compassion Courage

We Are Sea Crest We began this school year, my sixth at our institution, with the rallying cry We Are Sea Crest! I am enthralled and energised by the voices of children excited to be back after the long summer hiatus and teachers eager to enter their classrooms. Simultaneously, I feel humbled to be a part of the magic of what it means to be at an institute that embraces innovation, puts children first in our decisionmaking and cherishes community. We are Sea Crest means that we take seriously our responsibility to be engaged learners; responsible stewards of the earth; and companions who are kind, compassionate, empathetic and mindful. Last year was a big one for Sea Crest. Just a few of our accomplishments: • 100% of our Middle School pupils who applied to private schools were accepted to schools of their choice. • We won the Smith Cup for the seventh consecutive year. • Through our work with Alison Park of Blink Consulting, the faculty and staff continued our exploration of what it means to be culturally aware, competent and inclusive. Alison continued this journey with us when she facilitated assemblies with our pupils. • Middle School pupils studied the effects of waste on the environment, which prompted our adoption of a comprehensive composting and re-cycling programme school-wide. • Our two-year reflection on authentic assessments resulted in our implementation of the MAP standardised assessment (grades 4-8) to better enable us to track each pupil’s individual academic growth throughout the school year. As a small school with finite resources, we rely on the generosity of our families and friends – in monetary donations and volunteerism – to be able to provide the exceptional education our pupils experience. We Are Sea Crest is epitomised by how whole-heartedly you embrace this endeavour. Last year, 94% of our parents and 100% of our faculty, staff and trustees contributed to our Annual Fund. It was our highest participation ever and over 20% higher than the national average for independent schools. Thank you! This year marks the 24th since our founding and Sea Crest continues to grow in strength and vitality. Our Trustees are diligent, our faculty and staff care deeply and our parents are committed. We are partners in support of our young scholars. I am extremely fortunate to walk this path with you as the leader of our school. To answer the call We Are Sea Crest means to enthusiastically live our mission of providing the best in innovative education. Gratefully Yours,

Dr. Tekakwitha M. Pernambuco-Wise Head of School

Safe and Nurturing Community These are just few words that come to mind when I think about Sea Crest students. In a fast moving world where pressures on students continue to increase, Sea Crest School is a haven for students. Our intimate, safe and nurturing community fosters an environment where Sea Crest students can build their confidence, explore their interests and passions and discover who they are. Students are encouraged to take risks, be creative problem solvers and most importantly, have fun while they learn. At Sea Crest, we acknowledge and celebrate each student’s uniqueness. Every child matters in our school. While there have been many exciting innovations in education over the last few years, we have also seen increasing challenges particularly in the Bay Area when it comes to staffing. A national teacher shortage, high cost of living and lack of affordable housing have made it extremely difficult for Bay Area schools to attract and retain teachers. Last year, several local school districts made news when they were forced to start the school year with many positions unfilled. Sea Crest School has been very fortunate to find high quality teachers each year who are excited by our mission, vision and school culture. While there is no easy answer to this problem, the Board and school administration are focused on doing everything we can to attract and retain high caliber teachers who will move our program forward. Even as we strive to increase salaries for our faculty, the Board is committed to maintaining competitive tuition rates and developing a fully funded tuition assistance program. We depend on the philanthropy of our donor community to achieve these goals and I am continually impressed and inspired by their generosity. Each dollar raised through the Annual Fund, the Ginger Girvin Scholarship Run and at the Auction directly impacts our students. These funds enable Sea Crest to attract, retain and develop excellent teachers, deliver strong academic, enrichment and character programs, provide state of the art facilities and offer tuition assistance to as many families as possible. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank the many people who contribute to making Sea Crest a gem on the coast. We are fortunate to have an extraordinary community of inspiring and dedicated teachers and administration, generous donors, tireless volunteers, engaged parents, grandparents and enthusiastic students led by our visionary Head of School, Dr. Tekakwitha Pernambuco-Wise. The success of your efforts can be seen daily in our students who know they can make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. I am honored and privileged to serve as Board Chair at Sea Crest School. The Board and I look forward to the year ahead and continuing to serve the school. With gratitude and deepest regards,

Amy Ramsey Chair, Board of Trustees

Financially Healthy Sea Crest’s Administration and Board of Trustees have worked very hard over the years to support the school’s mission and strategic plan, all while building an organization that is financially stable. The operating budget is incredibly lean – we must continually balance the desire to keep tuition affordable for our community, while also striving to adequately compensate teachers who are so critical in delivering the best program for our students. I am pleased to report that the school once again achieved both its revenue and expense budget targets for the 2017-18 school year. Consistent with many independent schools across the country and in the Bay Area, Sea Crest experienced a slight decline in enrollment during the 2017-18 school year, ending the year with 273 students. Total revenue of $5.4M remained consistent with prior year, 86% of which came directly from tuition and academic programs. Unrestricted Fundraising contributed $495K or 9% of revenue during the year and once again enabled the school to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the true cost to educate Sea Crest students. Charitable donations received from our school families and the Coastside community at large are invaluable to balance our budget. On the expense side, far and away the most significant expense for Sea Crest was salaries and benefits for the school’s exceptional faculty and staff, which was $3.9M or 75% of total expenses during the year. The second biggest cost was the school’s campus, with building and facilities expenses of $571K or 11% of total expenses. Finally, academic programs represented $225K or 4% of total expenses last year. On the Balance Sheet, Sea Crest had $10.7M in total assets at June 30, 2018, including $5.3M of cash and investments (certificates of deposits) and $5.0 of plant assets, net of accumulated depreciation. Consistent with the prior year, total liabilities were $6.0M which was largely comprised of $4.1M in long term debt and $1.7M in deferred revenue related to tuition collected for the subsequent school year. There is no doubt that we will continue to face challenges as local demographics change and affordability for both our families and school employees becomes more and more difficult. We have our work cut out for us over the coming years to maintain financial stability while continuing to deliver a top-notch program. At the same time, I feel incredibly grateful for where we are today. I’m grateful that such an amazing school is located on the Coast and such passionate educators continue to provide an innovative educational experience for so many children every day. I’m grateful for the tireless hard work and dedication of the Administrative team to execute the mission, and the Board of Trustees to steer the ship. And finally, I’m immensely grateful for the philanthropic support of the Sea Crest community, your continued generosity allows the school to deliver such a robust experience every day. Thank you.

Jacquie Cuvelier Chief Financial Officer
