Seaford War Memorial Restored to its Former Glory
Thanks to generous donations Seaford’s Sutton Park Road War Memorial has been renovated. In advance of Armed Forces Day 2021, Saturday 26th June, and to mark its centenary year, Seaford Town Council made arrangements for the war memorial on Sutton Park Road to be cleaned and have the inscriptions repainted. Council extends it thanks on behalf of the town for their contributions. This war memorial, which is one of many war memorials and monuments within the town, was originally erected in 1921 in Dane Road but was re-sited in 1952 to its current location. The memorial is in memory of those who laid down their lives for their country and commemorates men from the South African War, First World War and Second World War, including Seaford civilians who lost their lives in the latter. Since its re-siting, the war memorial site has also welcomed the installation of the commemorative Tommy bench in 2019 and the memorial paving stone for Major Cuthbert Bromley VC, unveiled in 2015 on the 100th anniversary of the week of his death. Regrettably, the Seaford Armed Forces Day Committee was forced to take the decision to cancel the Armed Forces Day event again this year due to COVID restrictions in place and in line with guidance on the safe holding of events. However, the Armed Forces flags were flying at the Martello Fields on Armed Forces Day, Saturday 26th June, in order to allow safe space for people to visit the flags to pay their respects. The public is also being encouraged to pay tribute online to the British Armed Forces community for their hard work, dedication and efforts – by using #SaluteOurForces you can join this tribute with photos of your salutes on the Armed Forces Day Facebook or Twitter pages.
