Seaford Scene August 2021

Seaford Photographic Society We are in our summer break at the moment but are still holding a few low-key informal events for any members who want to participate. Some of us recently met up in Alfriston for photo get-together and a bit of socialising. We had a very pleasant stroll down the west side of the river and back up the east side. We are also organising monthly fun summer competitions with set subjects, to encourage people to get out and about with their cameras. Members vote for their favourite images and we then get together on Zoom to view and talk about them. We thought this would be a good opportunity to tell you a bit more the club and what we do. Looking back to the 2019/20 season, our meetings stopped abruptly in March 2020 with the first lockdown, but we managed to keep the club going for the whole of the 2020/21 season by holding all meetings online via Zoom. We have been delighted with how successful this has been, and not only did nearly everybody stick with us but we gained some new members as well. It also enabled us to source some very special speakers from further afield, who wouldn’t have been able to visit in person. We are now all looking forward to the start of the new season in September, when we will hopefully be meeting in person again at our usual venue, for the first time in 18 months! The programme for the year has now been finalised and is available to see on our website.

Our programme features a mix of competitions, lectures, illustrated talks, workshops and practical evenings. The competitions are very popular and cater for both prints and projected digital images (PDIs) so, if you are not used to printing, you can enter images straight out of the camera. Don’t be put off by the idea of competitions – you will find these are excellent for learning and developing your skills. The very experienced visiting judges are fully trained and they provide constructive criticism of the photos that people enter. They concentrate on the positive aspects of what works and why, but provide guidance on how the images could be improved. All this is anonymous, unless you get a high score, so there’s no question of having your photo pulled apart in front of everybody! There’s no pressure to enter the competitions – you can just come along to watch and learn if you like.

If you are keen on photography and have been thinking about joining us, whether you are a beginner or more experienced, just come along to one of our meetings where you can chat with existing members and even join us for a drink in the bar. Joining a camera club is a great way to meet up with like-minded people as well as learning loads of new stuff and improving your photography. We meet on Fridays from September to the end of May at Seaford Constitutional Club, Crouch Lane. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.45pm start. We are a friendly club that caters for all age groups and abilities, and people join for many different reasons. Some come for the social aspect and to chat about photography, others to see the lectures and talks, or show their work by entering competitions and getting feedback. The main thing though is that we all want to learn and improve. We know there are a lot of keen amateur photographers around locally, so why not come along to see what you think? The first meeting of the new season is on Friday 3th September.
