Seaford Splash

Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford Arts and crafts

Gallery Uno, Phil Duncan’s new showcase of Sussexbased arts and crafts, which opened last month in High Street, continues with a refreshed gallery of makers to provide ideas for presents during December. At the Crypt Gallery in Church Street you could find another opportunity for gift buying at the Winter Market of arts and crafts from Saturday 4th December until Sunday 19th December, daily 10am until 4pm. Makers include Dominic Parrette with traditional and contemporary frame baskets, needle felt with Sue Douglas, Alison Sutton with lamp-worked glass beads, Scott Brennan with landscapes, and Alison Eden with vegan skincare and toiletry products. Christmas Magic

After having to cancel last year’s celebrations for Seaford’s Christmas Magic, Seaford Town Council and the Christmas Magic Committee are hosting this year’s event on Saturday 4th December from 11am until 5pm in Seaford’s Crouch Gardens and Mercread Youth Centre. The live music performance stage will be hosted by Shannon Smith, with an eclectic mix of vocalists and musician performances throughout the day within the Crouch Gardens Market space. A pre-bookable Santa’s Grotto can be found at the Party Emporium shop in the High Street, with tickets also available during December. While all this is happening, Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printers (SCIP) are holding Pick ’n’ Mix Pattern lantern-making workshops at Mercread Youth Centre from 10.30am until 4pm, when a bag of decorative bits will be available for all, for the making of individually-marked lanterns ready for the highlight of the day, the Lantern Parade that builds up to the excitement of the Christmas lights switch-on in Broad Street by Father Christmas and Seaford Mayor Cllr Rodney Reed at 4.45pm. The last film of Seaford Community Cinema’s current season is on Christmas Magic Saturday when it will be showing children’s movie Arthur Christmas (U) at the Barn Theatre on 4th December at 6pm. Directed by Sarah Smith and Barry Cook, it stars James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton in a storyline that imagines the dysfunctional Santa family struggling to get the presents down chimneys on time. This is animated Christmas enchantment to conclude Seaford’s special day. The Times critic Wendy Hide described it as ‘disarming, imaginative and genuinely funny.’ Tickets at £6 non members, £5 members and £3.50 under-18s are available from www. ticketsource.co.uk, from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street or on the door. Current COVID guidelines apply, and at the time of writing the cinema was limiting seats to 100 and allowing patrons to choose whether or not they wear a mask. Music
