Collecting Recent GB Stamps

How times have changed! Just 20 years ago – a short time ago in the eyes of stamp collectors – nearly all post was sent using pre-paid labels, ‘stamps’ to you and me. Nowadays we still occasionally buy these stamps in booklets to send letters but when you take heavier or larger mail into a Post Office they are more likely to stick an uninspiring white label on the item. Most of the smaller Post Offices do not even stock the recent commemorative stamps which can only be obtained in main Post Offices or directly from the Philatelic Bureau. It was refreshing to see displays of recent stamps which were given by two members of the Hastings Stamp Club.

Chris Dadswell showed his collection of GB Folded booklets of four 1st class stamps which contain a Commemorative Label; the one shown is the third in this series with the label celebrating the Queen’s 70th birthday. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you can find the

printer’s cylinder numbers in the margin alongside the stamps: these numbers are only printed once on the sheet and modern stamps are usually printed in ‘one run’ so, when present, these booklets have the same numbers. Some older booklets had such long print runs that the cylinders wore out or broke-making some of the cylinder numbers quite rare. Around the start of this century these booklets were replaced by ones containing six stamps with four definitive stamps alongside two commemorative ones.

The second display given by Kevin Dillistone was of Irish First Day Covers (FDCs) with a difference. These recent covers were created by Paddy Lineen, a retired Doctor of Engineering living on Achill Island, Co. Mayo. He finds links between modern Irish commemorative stamps and the local area; the connection between the stamp commemorating the band ‘Thin Lizzy’ and his area is that the family of their original lead singer, Phil Lynott, have links to a pub in the area. With each FDC comes a sheet containing details of the stamp and its link to the area. Since he usually produces just six of each cover and keeps two for himself, we are unlikely to ever see them again

We have a full agenda for next year, starting with ‘New Zealand’ on 12th January and ‘A London PotPourri’ on 9th February. The club meets on the second Wednesday of the the month at 7pm for 7.30pm at the Seaford Constitutional Club.
