Seaford Community Cinema is presenting an eclectic programme of films and NT Live productions for the coming season, from January to April 2022 at the Barn Theatre. The New Year feast kicks off on Friday 14th January at 7.30pm with Nomadland (12A), the film which ran away with the Oscars including Best Film, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Director for Chloé Zhao. When a company town in Nevada suffers economic collapse, a widow (McDormand) goes on the road as a modern-day nomad, on the way meeting actual nomads who play themselves.

Next up is Gala Night on Saturday 22nd January, when Seaford’s The Youth Counselling Project is getting together with the cinema to raise much-needed funds for the schools-based charity, see page XX. The film is the critically acclaimed musical In the Heights (U), with music and lyrics co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. A film version of the Broadway musical, it centres on characters living in Washington Heights, where the good life is tantalisingly close yet far away in Manhattan. This is a real singalong movie and to get Gala-goers in the mood Clubby’s are cooking up meat and vegan burgers, included in the Gala ticket price of £15 adults and £12 18s and under. Fancy dress is positively encouraged!
In Another Round (12A) a group of disillusioned school teachers turns to drink in an experiment designed to gee up the effectiveness of their classes by maintaining a steady alcohol level. In this Danish comedy, screened on Friday 28th January, it isn’t long before the project is being promoted to a real academic study.
The Valentine’s Day romcom on Friday 11th February is Supernova (15) which sees partners played by Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci travelling in a camper van to the Lake District in a heart-tugging story about an author battling early-onset dementia and a musician preparing for his final concert. The first Sunday matinée of the season takes place on 20th February with the screening of classic favourite High Society (U) at 2.30pm, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra.
Then it’s back to 7.30pm with Friday 25th February’s The Last Bus (12A) starring Timothy Spall and Phyllis Logan in a warm-hearted film which has the newly widowed Spall attempting to travel the length of the UK using just his bus pass and carrying the ashes of his dead wife (Logan).
The manic black comedy Cruella (12) on Friday 4th March stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson. Spike heels are out in this story about couture divas – and those Dalmatians are not quite so cute.
The second matinée is fantasy adventure Jungle Cruise (12) on Sunday 13th March at 2.30pm, involving a female scientist whose knowledge is wilfully unrecognised as she ventures with her brother to Brazil to find a tree with magical powers.
It’s back to the National Theatre again on Thursday 17th March at 7pm for a live screening of new musical Hex, about the bad fairy in Sleeping Beauty.
At the age of 83 Anthony Hopkins became the oldest actor to win Best Actor Oscar for his part in The Father (12) showing on Friday 18th March at 7.30pm, giving a devastating account of what it is like to suffer from dementia. Olivia Coleman supports.
And what better way to close the season than with Daniel Craig’s last outing as Bond in No Time To Die (12A), on Friday 1st April at 7.30pm?
The National Theatre stage comes to the Barn on Thursday 17th February at 7pm with The Book of Dust - La Belle Sauvage (12A). This portrayal of the Philip Pullman prequel is set 12 years before his His Dark Materials trilogy. Ticket price rise: Prices are rising for the first time in 10 years by £1, to £7 non members, £6 members and £4 18s and under except for Gala Night, see above, and NT tickets which go up by £1 to £14.50, £13.50 and £8.50. Buy tickets from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, from www.seafordcinema.org and on the door. Booking is strongly advised as COVID guidelines mean seating is limited. Patrons are asked to wear masks.
