Martello Rotary

Martello Rota ry This month it’s all about seaside safety, environmental awareness and plastics.

National Coastwatch, looking after us all In 1994, following the rationalisation of HM Coastguard, the coastguard station at Bass Point in Cornwall was closed. During that year two fishermen drowned below the closed station, causing local uproar as it was believed that if the station had still been open the tragedy would have been averted. This uproar led to the set up locally of the National Coastwatch. NCI now has 56 watch stations supported by 2,650 trained volunteers around England and Wales. David Crozier gave a fascinating insight into the workings of the NCI and how it provides the ‘eyes’ around the coast, helping protect anyone who works or plays on or in the sea. Run by volunteers, this charity is worth looking into. Go to www.nci.org for more information. Still at Sea... Karen Poley from KP Projects came and told us about her work with the Living Coast Undersea Experience. This is an interactive, virtual reality and 360 experience, enabling users to explore the underwater environment of the Beachy Head West Marine Conservation Zone, which runs between Brighton Marina and Beachy Head, without getting wet!

Last year an incredible 2,455 people ‘dived’ under water with them using virtual reality. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many inspired to change their behaviour to help conserve the marine

Environmental Projects So much more of our thinking now goes towards how we can help environmental projects. Our own Tavern in the Tent, that you will see at many Seaford events throughout the year is now using ‘green’ wine and beer mugs, so no single use of plastics (we wash and recycle after each event). These will also be used where we support upcoming events for other societies such as the Youth Counselling Project and Bonfire Society.

Volunteers for Martello Rotary continue to work with Trees for Seaford (previously Seaford Tree Wardens) in tree planting and tree maintenance. Martello Rotary have also adopted the two Elms for Armistice planted outside the Conservative Club. Last year we partfunded tree maintenance and supply of compost for the Intergenerational Garden at the Cradle Hill School, Children’s Centre.

All this is good, but we do need your help in order to help you. If you have an environmental project in Seaford, no matter how large or small, and need funding or support, let us know. Come and tell us about it to see if we can help.

And finally, if you are interested in having fun whilst helping your local community in supporting Rotary, why not come along and have a meal with us one night, meet existing Rotarians and see if you would like to join? Just call or email us. Martello Rotary meets on Monday evenings. If you would like more information email: contactmartellorotary@gmail.com or text us on 07984 581784.
