AMES+ DETROIT POSTER COLLAGE A collaborative poster collaging two unique cities. DETROIT SEAN CARBARY AMES REANNON OVERBEY
INTRO
My partner and I wanted to compare are two unique cities in a collaged visual poster. To start the poster collage we set up some rules and simple guidelines. Each of us were to add these elements within the grid: + 3 Images + 2 Words + 1 Color
POSTER 1
DETROIT
I started with a historical image of Detroit and a street map for my first two images. Detroit is a city that has a lot of history with business, industry, art, architecture, and social environments. I used the words “Historic” and “Growth” to represent the city and how it has grown and expanded its culture and industry over the years. Within the “Growth” is an image of modern graffiti street art to show that the city keeps evolving in culture and art to this day. Orange is a color that is strongly present in Detroit and affiliated with the city and their sports teams.

POSTER 2
AMES
I focused mostly on the Iowa State aspects of Ames because it is basically just a college town. I used an old picture of the campanile being built, which is one of the most well known structures on the campus. I also included an image of the football stadium because the town goes crazy for out sports teams, even though they aren’t very good. Then I included the swan because we have two swans in our lake called Lancelot and Ellaine and they are a big deal. Ames is basically just a town that loves Iowa State so I focused on that love, which is why one of the words I chose was College.

POSTER 3
DETROIT
With the second edit, I added a historic picture of old Henry Ford Model-T cars. Detroit has an ironic auto industry that continues to this day with their auto shows and factories. The Joe Louis Monument was added because it represents strength, and the fight against segregation and racism in Detroit. The words “Automotive” and “Diversity” reinforce both of these ideas about Detroit. I added the color blue to represent the Detroit river which is the border between Canada and the US. Lastly I added an image of the DIA to show Detroit’s appreciation for the arts and design.

POSTER 4
AMES
For my second edit, I decided to focus more on the town of Ames as a whole. I included a statue of Cy, which while it is a part of ISU, is a statue that appears throughout the town. I also included an image of corn which is basically surrounds Ames. The third image was of Main Street which is Ames’s downtown area with family owned shops, restaurants, and festivals. The words I included were Community because family and supporting local businesses is important to the people of Ames. Agriculture was the second because it is what both Iowa State and Iowa is known for. The color I chose was a goldish yellow because it one of our two school colors that shows up all around town.

POSTER 5
DETROIT
I added an image of “The Spirit of Detroit” monument because the statue represent Detroit and the community. It is also altered by the community for events and sports. I added the Detroit skyline to show the city as a whole. The last image is a group of locals protesting and fighting for the rights of their community and other. Within the image has the word “NOBAN” which also shows the communities strength. Detroit and the people are all different so I added the word “Unique” to represent them. Red is a strong color present in Detroit in its sports, art, and protests.

POSTER 6
AMES
For my final edit I decided to focus on Des Moines which is our city. It is what everyone in Ames knows as a big city, and where everyone goes to do anything interesting. I started with an image of the skyline to give an idea of what it looks like. I then added a sculpture from the Sculpture Park in downtown which is well-known and seen on postcards and tourist type things. My final image as of one of the pieces of street art that you can find in Des Moines near the weekly Farmers Market every summer. The two words I chose to use were Small and Happy because everything about Ames and Des Moines seems small. Small communities, small businesses, small airports, etc. It is also a happy place, everyone (for the most part) is nice and helpful. The color I chose was a sky blue because when I imagine my favorite days in Ames and Des Moines, there is always a blue sky.

POSTER 7
DETROIT
For my final edit I added the FOX theater to show off the fun / entertainment of Detroit. Detroit host countless events, festivals, and concerts. A highway sign in addition with the word “connecting” represent the roadways that weave through the city connecting everything and everyone together. I added the word “Potential” because when I see Detroit, I see a lot of potential. The city has its flaws, however it has a lot of possible growth within the city, the community, and industry. The pink stripe I added symbolizes the love for the city. People in Detroit are proud of where they live and love their city even through tough times.
OUTRO
We both were very pleased with the final piece and enjoyed the process of making this poster. Combining our two separate cities into one collective poster shows the differences and similarities in the culture each have.
