The Goblin is Having and Existential Crisis is a curated collection of Dungeons & Dragons dice, that was collected through the players of the game. Each pair of dice was collected from a D&D player along with their personal story and input on the game and what it has done for them. D&D was seen as an occult following of geek culture however, it strengthened the social and creativity skills of society. D&D can benefit anyone who plays it because it encourages social interaction, strategic thinking, and exploring creativity and imagination. The game is created through impromptu acting and fantasy storytelling that allow players to imagine, explore, and create new stories and ideas that fuels the creative mind.

With use of mythology, renaissance, dungeons, etc. came the stigma. Many people who play D&D are perceived as nerdy kids that never grew up, that they are escaping something, and a part of a cult. In the 1980’s the game was seen as Satanist acts with a cult based system. However, it was never about a cult or Satan but rather the fun of the game. The game challenges players resourcefulness and imaginations with their friends in a group social setting. Much like normal conversation with friends but with a fantasy game added. Dungeons & Dragons is an experience that more people should try, especially those with in the creative fields. The game makes you think differently, look at problems in new ways, strategize, or just improvisation to solve a puzzle.

INTRODUCTION

Pits of the Damned

Golden Caves

D&D established a model of entertainment where story isn’t just made with predetermined outcomes. It is something that can be shaped and expanded on as long as there is enthusiasm and imagination. D&D is the precursor to all forms of entertainment like videogames, TV, movies, books. It all started with turning mythology into an interactive and ever expanding game.

Pits of the Damned

Dungeons & Dragons grew out of the fortuitous meeting of Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Gamers back in the 60s and 70s often named their gaming groups, a bit like acting troupes or biker gangs. Gary Gygax, for example, was involved in a group called the Castle & Crusade Society. The society had ranks and peerage, exactly like a medieval realm. The “king”, ironically, was a 14-year-old, but there was also a certain baron from Minneapolis named Dave Arneson. The evolution of the D&D itself began with Chainmail, a game written by Gary Gygax and Jeff Perren to simulate medieval combat. However, at the end of the game, there was a 14-page supplement describing the application of the rules to fantasy. The fantasy supplement provided rules for magic swords, monsters, and spells with names like “Lightning” and “Fireball.” When Dave Arneson read the Chainmail fantasy rules, he adapted them to a fantasy world of his own creation, Blackmoor – a setting inspired by the Lord of the Rings universe combined with elements of Arneson’s own imagination and various mechanics pulled from other games. The premise was simple: players would portray only a single character (an idea he lifted from a game called Braunstein) and would explore underground dungeons where they would face perils and puzzles. Both the characters and the story would persist from session to session, with characters working cooperatively and improving over time.

35MI

40MI

45MI

ONCE UPON A TIME… In the fall of 1972, Arneson drove down to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin from Minneapolis to run Blackmoor for Gary Gygax. Gygax was blown away by the game, and within weeks requested the rules from Arneson. He was mailed 18 hand-written pages. Gygax took them and expanded them to fifty pages, and began testing the game with his children, Ernie & Elise. Gygax named the campaign he was running Castle Greyhawk. Soon, Gary & Dave had codified all their ideas and experiences into a ruleset they titled Dungeons & Dragons. It would prove to be a revolution.

Golden Caves

Dungeons & Dragons was published by a company named TSR, in a magical realm named Wisconsin, where the hills roll like green waves to the horizon, where the cheese is the bright orange of the sunrise, and the winters are long and dark as death. Dungeons & Dragons was created by a brace of midwestern mages named Gary and Dave, and the tale of the game’s journey from a Lake Geneva basement in 1972 to the cultural institution it is today is one of the great stories of gaming.

Ironically, D&D was unable to find a publisher, so Gygax decided to publish it himself, forming Tactical Studies Rules Inc (or TSR) to publish the game. D&D sold 150 copies in its first month, and by summer, TSR ordered another 1,000 copies. For the first years of its existence, the game was difficult to find, and because of that, pirate photocopies of the rules proliferated. (The game also cost $10, which was considered an exorbitant amount of money at the time for a game, which may also have had something to do with all the intellectual property theft.)

+ 36

In the next ten years, Gary Gygax would go from being an unemployed game designer cobbling shoes in his basement for extra income to living in a mansion in Beverly Hills and having a national television show based on the game he created. TSR grew from being run off Gygax’s dining room table to a corporation valued at millions of dollars with offices in Great Britain and Los Angeles. Oh, and the company had a mansion on the Isle of Man. Yes, there were hiccups along the way, such as the Satanic Panic, but TSR, and D&D, seemed powerful and immortal, like a 20th level wizard with the philosopher’s stone. Then it all fell apart.

Silent Forest

THE BIRTH OF DUNGEONS & DRAGONS D&D is a game where anything can happen and players have total freedom of action. Furthermore, the timeframe of the game is literally infinite. A game could go on for ten, twenty, or even a hundred years if not limited by the lifespans of the players. Better yet, the players’ characters would improve every session, growing in power and knowledge. These features would combine to make the game a smash-hit.

THE DEATH & RESURRECTION OF D&D It’s a story that isn’t all that unfamiliar: a small creative company becomes a large corporate entity and with it comes boardroom drama (think Apple). Like Steve Jobs, Gary Gygax was forced out of the company he founded and made successful, TSR. There were legal battles over the next decade as TSR would attempt to stop Gygax from creating a competing roleplaying game. It was undoubtedly a frustrating, and painful time for Gygax. Luke Gygax, Gary’s son, said his father felt, “anger and disbelief” during this period.

35MI

40MI

45MI

50MI

55MI

60MI

65MI

Like many companies who eschewed their creative founder, the new management engaged in a number of extremely questionable business practices, and in hindsight, those business decisions would ultimately lead to the downfall of TSR. In the early 90s, TSR felt market pressure to innovate thanks to the rise of games like Vampire: The Masquerade. They began to experiment with CDROMs, games with CDs, games with videotapes, etc. It was all very exciting, but also very expensive. They found a unique, but ultimately unsound, method of funding it. Random House, TSR’s distributor, paid them for product not when it was sold to bookstores, but when it arrived at Random House’s warehouse. Therefore, if TSR shipped a lot of product, Random House would pay them for it. (Yes, Random House could return product for a refund, but when sales were good, this wasn’t a problem.) This money could then be used to finance things like a CD-ROM of the D&D rules. This structure would lead to overprinting, and TSR failing to pay their printer. Because TSR’s debt to their printer eventually became quite substantial, the company signed a contract agreeing to only print books with them. The printer, having a monopoly on TSR’s business, began to increase their rates.

Holy Cathedral

40MI

In 1996, Random House returned millions of dollars of worth of TSR product. Thirty employees were let go from TSR right before Christmas. In the new year, the printer announced they would not publish any more TSR products until they received payment on their debt. TSR, it seemed, was doomed. Their distributor was returning millions of dollars worth of product, and the printer, whom they were required by contract to use for their printing, was refusing to print anything else. It seemed likely that TSR would be dismembered, and the fate of Dungeons & Dragons, and possibly even roleplaying itself, hung in the balance. Then a white wizard rode in from the west.

Abramowitz approached Wizards’ CEO Peter Adkison about buying TSR, as long as Wizards was willing to also buy Five Rings Publishing. Adkison, for whom owning D&D would be a dream come true, agreed. This would keep D&D in the hands of gamers, and out of the clutches of a large corporation, at least for a while. Despite buying an ailing company ridden with debt, the purchase worked out well for Wizards. Adkison said, “We were able to turn D&D into a profitable line within just three months.” New Dungeons & Dragons books were being put on store shelves. For the next few years, they would even continue to have the TSR logo on them, along with Wizards of course.

10MI

+ 30

+ 32

Adkison’s sense of justice would pay dividends. Luke Gygax, Gary’s son who runs Gary Con, a convention in Lake Geneva devoted to honoring the memory of his late father, said, “If D&D had to move outside my family’s control, Peter was a great person to assume the mantle.”

Silent Forest

As the new owner of Dungeons & Dragons, Peter Adkison set out to make things right with Gary Gygax, the co-creator of D&D who had nearly been sued into oblivion by the prior management of TSR. Adkison, instead of suing Gygax, said he, “wrote checks to Gary Gygax, his ex-wife, and Dave Arneson in exchange for a clean bill of health on the intellectual property [Dungeons & Dragons].” It was a complete flip in Gygax’s treatment. But why? Adkison recalled, “Perhaps this wasn’t strictly necessary, but there were many hard feelings among old-school gamers that Gary and Dave had both been cheated.”

Intelligence, and Charisma), and the ubiquitous character classes would all be present in the game. Players would portray characters who would go on to explore dungeons, and likely fight dragons. But they would do so, hopefully, with more heroism and drama, and less flipping through the rules for contradictory minutia.

A 3rd edition had been in the works for some time. Back at TSR, there had been work on a 3rd edition, and Wizards CEO Peter Adkison announced internally that Wizards would be producing a third edition a mere day after the staff learned of the purchase of TSR.

The game, when released in 2000, proved to be a great success. Fans saw that Wizards understood and loved D&D, and the game, designed by Monte Cook, Skip Williams, and Jonathan Tweet, is still played by gamers today, although the back of the book might not say “D&D 3rd Edition.”

The goal of D&D’s 3rd edition was to create a game that still felt like D&D, but sloughed off the mish-mash of rules that had accumulated on the game over the past decades. The six core statistics (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom,

How is that possible? It’s thanks to an incredible innovation in the world of RPGs, though the decision to unleash it may have been financially costly for Wizards of the Coast.

Golden Caves

Having settled old employees of TSR in their new offices, made things right with Gary Gygax, the next thing for Wizards of the Coast to do with the newlyacquired Dungeons & Dragons property seemed obvious: make their mark on the game by releasing a new edition. At Gen Con 1999, they announced a 3rd edition of the game.

SETTING D&D FREE The Open Gaming License (OGL) was the brainchild of Ryan Dancey. In 2000, Ryan Dancey was brand manager at Wizards of the Coast, and he decided that the best thing for the future of the game was to set it free. The OGL would allow other publishers to create adventures, settings, and other material using the D&D 3rd edition rules. The OGL led to a flood of material being produced for 3rd edition. TSR alum Jim Butler, who was working at Wizards at the time, said the OGL “truly super-charged the industry” and allowed gamers to “to scratch almost any itch” they might have. Gamers could play Call of Cthulhu, science fiction, modern spy thrillers, and superheroes, all while using some variation on the D&D 3rd edition rules.

+ 36

+ 34

Silent Forest

We’re now in a new age of D&D with the highly successful and well-received 5th edition. But the 3rd edition of D&D has been prevalent, at times dominant, and successful in the industry for the past 17 years. It may be the most successful ruleset for any RPG ever published. As a gamer looking at the industry in 2017, it is hard not to believe that while the OGL may have been bad for Wizards, it has been a huge boon for gaming as a whole. There are now countless flavors of D&D on the market, and when more good games are made, we all win.

SATANIC SCARE

Silent Forest

I confess, that as a young, impressionable teenager, I played Dungeons and Dragons and regularly listened to heavy metal music. My hair was long, and I wore a jean jacket bedecked in the names of rock groups. I used to ride my bicycle for miles to meet a group of similarly vulnerable young friends, where we would hunch over maps, rolling dice and imagining swordsmen, monsters, and buxom wenches. Today, my friends and I are tragically unsuccessful in life (those of us who survived), worshipping demonic forces, and unable to tell reality from fantasy.

Pits of the Damned

In the 1980’s, a group called Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons (BADD) was formed by the mother of a young teen lost to suicide. Because D&D was new on the social scene, was strange, unknown, and had unknown effects, the youth’s suicide was blamed on the role-playing game. A lawsuit against the makers of the game failed, so the well-intended concerns over the game’s danger went into the social realm. The group joined forces with a similarly-concerned psychiatrist, Thomas Radecki, MD, to raise social awareness of the dangers they perceived in this game. Because role-playing is sometimes used for therapeutic reasons, the role-playing in the game, involving violence, sexuality and fantasy, were believed to have an untoward effect on the youth who fell under its influence. Conservative Christian organizations joined forces with the campaign, and linked the influence of D&D with the dangerous immoral influence of heavy-metal music, which supposedly led young people into the arms of demonic influence. Worldwide, groups like BADD distributed information to police and the public, warning of the dangers of games such as D&D.

40MI

Golden Caves

My friends and I are engineers, lawyers, real estate agents, fathers, coaches, husbands, and partners. How did that happen? And why didn’t it happen the way we were warned? I distinctly recall catastrophic warnings that D&D would disturb our developing minds, that heavy metal music was destroying our souls and morals.

OH. WAIT. WE’RE NOT.

The teen players of D&D grew old enough to advocate for themselves, forming groups to stand up to the purveyors of fear. Research showed that rates of suicide in registered players of roleplaying games was actually lower than the general population. Empirical research demonstrated that role-playing games had no measurable negative impact on psychological functioning, emotional measures or reality-testing. The leaders of BADD were shown to have exaggerated their credentials, and cherry-picked their data, using facts to their convenience and to feed their goals. In fact, Radecki, who claimed that D&D warped the morals of vulnerable adolescents was arrested (link is external)in 2013 for sexually exploiting his patients, trading Suboxone for sex. 35MI

40MI

45MI

Society must become far more skeptical of the confident predictions of well-intended doomsayers. In every moral panic of the last century, doctors, therapists, psychologists and academics fed the fear. We must question the proclamations and predictions made by the anxiety industry, researchers, writers and therapists, when their concerns reflect moral concerns and anecdotal experiences, rather than empirical data. Today, sex, videogames, the Internet, social media, and brain-changing devices and experiences are all ripe areas of moral panic. In our fear over cell phones, radio towers, and sex on the Internet, we are repeating history, to our future regret. Engage your skepticism and distrust, when someone tells you to “Be afraid, be very afraid,” no matter the initials after their names, their many anecdotal examples, and most of all, their commitment to helping you.

Golden Caves

Pits of the Damned

In the early 1990’s, the concern over D&D melded with the social fright over Satanic Ritual Abuse. Eight percent of the American population was alleged to be “secret Satanists,” and countless crimes, murders and suicides were blamed on the insidious influence of secret Satan-worshipping. Wild claims proliferated, that some games contained secret instructions on hacking (which actually led to the US Secret Service conducting a raid on one game manufacturer), and that D&D books were printed using ink containing secret Soviet mind-control chemicals.

JOHN’S DICE

Loot

You knock out Nrevi. As you loot his pockets for valuables you find his dice‌

John only has two sets of dice to his collection but the pairs he has a very lucky. Before purchasing a set he tests their luck by rolling them a few times. This set rolled an 18,19, and 15 so John purchased them right away. Higher rolls means greater chance of success when playing Dungeons & Dragons John was intrigued by the design of the pink glittery dice that swirl like marble. He finds the color pink very controversial. Society considers it a very feminine color but John does not care for gender norms. He comprehends the color to represent happiness and fun-loving, which embodies himself and his character.

Emily House has enough dice sets to fill a whole one pound bag however, she mainly uses four to five sets at a time. This set of dice represent pride for Emily, specifically gay pride. Emily is part of the LGBTQA community and is a strong supporter of pride. She likes the rainbow colors witch accurately reflects herself and her character. As prideful and expressive the dice may be, the luck is “shit”. It’s about a 50/50 chance of success with most of her rolls which can lead to problematic outcomes in campaigns. As bad as they are Emily still likes to use them.

Darian has at least five sets of dice currently. These ruby red dice are her favorite set because they were her first. She started playing Dungeons and Dragons with these dice and created many memories with them. Darian is captivated by these dice because of the translucent ruby color. The dice can sometimes roll streaks of natural 20’s, and other times they totally suck. But Darian still finds these dice to be special to her. MADI’S DICE

Loot

You shoot an arrow at the tree next to Caelyn. The startled elf is impressed by your skill and gives you something…

Madi has three sets of dice total, and these metallic purple dice are her favorite. They are special to her because her father and sister bought them as a gift for Madi. They are a very unique set of dice because the material is a heavy weight metal with colored engravings. Luck wise, they are a solid 7.5 specifically. Madi was very adamant about the decimal value. She feels the dice represent her character because they are unique and different from regular dice. Likewise, her character does not fit into the stereotypical roles that she’s supposed to.

JORDAN’S DICE

Loot

Dante graciously accepts your offer and hands you a tool to help keep yourself safe‌

+68

Jordan has many sets of dice; approximately twenty sets. Initially he bought a bunch of sets to share so he can play with his friends. As he continued to play Dungeons & Dragons he started to buy dice for specific characters. Jordan is a big fan of Vincent Van Gogh and these dice resemble his Starry Night painting. He was immediately drawn to them. The dice roll very well, and have a high luck rating. They do not represent his character, rather his personal interests.

Amy Aubert has an astounding 30+ sets of dice filling a two pound bag. Naturally she would have a large selection or unique dice and this set is no exception. The shape of this set is remarkable and beautiful. These dice are Amy’s newest set of dice. The dice are meant for a wizard character so Amy uses them for her character. This is the first wizard Amy has played in Dungeons and Dragons. The dice are very lucky; they make her succeed and fail at perfect timing. They also represent her character and Amy believes Freya would own these.

+72

Marc has about eight sets of dice, but has lost some and has duplicates of others. The color combinations of blue and green are his favorite color combination, next to purple and gold. The colors remind Marc of flowing water and fluidity. His character is a fighter who is fluent in all forms of fighting and like water can adapt to different situations and strategies. Marc says that the dice still have some luck in them and can get some decent rolls. After playing games of Dungeons & Dragons players can notice when their dice’s luck has run out. This set has lasted Marc a while and are still going strong.

TITO’S DICE

Loot

Turns out Ingram is a horrible captain and left his ship unattended. You steal his ship and all his provisions…

+74

Tito’s set is different from everyone else’s dice. Tito does not have a particular favorite set of dice, rather favorite dice for each occasion. He built this set by taking one die from each of his sets and uses them each. The white four-sided die is his favorite from the group because it is made from his birth stone, pearl. The dice represent Tito’s pirate character because he steals treasures from everyone he meets. Usually the first action he performs in every interaction is to check if they have loot, and then proceed to steal it. The dice are like stolen treasures coming from all different locations and people. However, the dice are still pretty lucky which works out for him, but sometimes it may vary.

PAUL’S DICE

Loot

You join Motrek in his ritual sacrifice and summon a powerful dark god. The god rewards you with powerful magic stones…

+78

Paul has four sets of dice but these being his favorite. These dice are the only lucky dice out of the rest of his sets, the others are all “trash”. Paul likes design over function and buys sets that look good to him but perform poorly. However, he does not see this as a disadvantage because he is happy with his dice. They represent his character Motrek because they are “boring” and moderately lucky. However, I do not think Motrek realizes how interesting he really is because his dice have unique characteristics and color patterns that make them curious.

AMBER’S DICE

Loot

You steal Ceti’s dice right out of her pockets! Look them over to examine their worth on the black market...

+80

Amber has a total of five sets of dice. Out of those this set is her favorite because it was the first pair she ever received. What make the dice special is the fact that they were a Christmas gift from her dad who used to play Dungeons and Dragons as well. Technically she did not have to pay for these dice because they were a gift but she thinks they were around $10. Amber is unsure how lucky the dice are, She wouldn’t say they are “lucky” but she does manage to get good rolls often enough that she doesn’t hate them. D&D players are pretty superstitious about their dice, so if they roll lower numbers, they lose interest in using the dice. Amber does not think the dice represent the her character but she personally finds them cute.

JESSE’S DICE

Loot

The vigilante Riffon had a large reward on his capture which you received for turning him in‌

+82

Like many other players, Jesse has multiple sets of dice. Eight to be exact. He likes the way they look with the metal material and engravings. The metal is actually has more balanced rolls than plastic dice because plastic dice have air bubbles. The bubbles can alter rolls making certain numbers more frequent. This can be good or bad for players but the metal dice give a more equalized result. Jesse’s characters typically are tank characters which means he absorbs a lot of damage for the party and can deal it back doubled. These dice are heavy, strong, and made of metal which fits the tank character trope. These dice were slightly more expensive than the other sets because of the material.

Golden Caves

Pits of the Damned

This is another pair that uses metal material instead of plastic. The dice have a substantial weight to them. Unlike the previous pair this metal does not have a texture, it is smooth and not weathered. The engravings are more subtle too.

Dylan only owns one pair of dice not because they are luck, but because they are “cursed”. Dylan says these dice are “cursed” dice and they only work for him. No one else can use these dice because they usually perform awfully. They get players in bad situations which usually results in injury and death. Dylan’s character is a demon named Molva and like the dice he is a demon of chaos. He plays his character to cause as much trouble and problems for his party as he can. There are character roles in Dungeons & Dragons and Dylan lives up to his to a tee.

The dice are speckled with red, orange, and yellow colors which give off a warmth, like fire. The engravings are black and a little worn which makes the letter forms look like they are chard.

SEAN’S DICE

Loot

You sell your soul to the great demon king, in return you receive the powers of the fates…

+86

Sean’s occult dice are the only set of dice he owns. They are his favorite because of the elegant and elaborate silver engravings on the dice. The markings resemble symbols and textiles from occult traditions and cultures. The contrast between the black and silver make the carvings stand out from the dice. This set represents Sean’s character because he plays a demon king from hell. The dice are pretty fitting to the characters design and background. The dice are very lucky and have rolled a critical fail only once in his playtime.

The dice are a simple matte black color. However, the details and engravings give the dice personality. Symbols, textiles, and patterns are etched into the dice with shiny silver which pops on the black dice.

Nrevi accepts your apology and you gain his respect. He passes some of his wisdom onto you…

John plays Dungeons & Dragons because it’s a way to escape our boring reality and explore a creative fantasy world you create with your friends. Dungeons $ Dragons has helped John develop better social skills and learn about his friends. He can learn more about his friends by the way they play their characters. The game also keeps his mind off of work and school allowing him to relax. John can get pretty involved with a story because he tries to put himself into his character roles or at least his values. “I find myself having fun every time we play because we create new jokes and memories” John likes to strategize and figure out how to handle situations utilizing his teammates strengths.

The game also makes Emily exercise her imagination and skills as a creative writer, and inspires her photography. Emily’s play style is very aggressive with no regrets. She plays without hesitation and goes hard at each problem. However, she treads lightly to not irritate the DM. The Dungeon Master controls every aspect of a story. If he wants you to die, you’ll die. Emily keeps that in mind as she fully immerses herself in each play through of Dungeons & Dragons.

Darian is in love with the fantasy and imagination behind it all. She doesn’t get to meet up with friends often, but when they do they go all out. They order pizzas and have fun as they go off on crazy adventures together. Darian used to refer to herself as a “hermit” but Dungeons and Dragons has pushed her to get out with people and socialize with them. She now can take risks, see friends, and meet new people in a fun way. The game is way more fun if you throw your emotions and yourself into a campaign you create. The game can be hilarious too when plans do not always work out. When other fail it can often lead to funny interactions between players and the DM.

Jordan plays Dungeons & Dragons to create a story with others. You create personalized characters in a fantasy world and make organic decisions. The story isn’t created by one person, rather by chance and the decisions players and the DM make. Which creates a totally unique and different experience each time you play. Jordan feels that over time he has been able to relate to others more, think better under pressure, and gained confidence by playing D&D. He always has fun with each puzzle. They are creatively engaging because there is always more than one correct answer. Amy gets deeply involved with the stories and characters, so much so that when a character dies she will cry. Players can create very strong connections to the characters that they create. Age: 22 Experience: 7 years Job: Student

You join captain Ingram’s crew and sail across the world under his command. You’ve learned a lot from his wisdoms…

Tito has found that his mental math skills have increased from playing Dungeons & Dragons. Each character has different stats for strength, wisdom, dexterity, intelligence, charisma, and constitution. When you role for an action, depending on what you’re doing, you can add the attribute of the according stat to increase your overall probability of success.

+122

This allows players to play to their roles because everyone is different. Some are better at magic because they have higher wisdom, others are better at bluffing from their charisma, etc. Tito says to “be creative, there is always a way to approach a situation” Considering your teams strengths and weakness will go a long way and keep you alive.

Age: 22 Experience: 6-7 years Job: Intern at Genisis Mental Health Club

Ceti parts to you her knowledge about her travels, hoping you may learn from her adventures…

Amber plays Dungeons and Dragons because it is a fun and creative game. No two games are ever the same. The plot and interactions are constantly changing each time they play, making the game infinitely innovative. The game is also a stress reliever for Amber, and all her friends participate.

+128

Amber is already a very social person so the game hasn’t affected her outside of D&D however, when she plays with her friends they all become very invested and involved with the game. Her creativity and innovation is constantly challenged with puzzle or event created by the Dungeon Master, who runs the campaign, sets the stage for the experience, and keeps track of stats and rewards.

JESSE HAMBY

Age: 22 Experience: 4 years Job: Costco

Riffons noble action peaked your interest so you ask him about his morals and belief in justice…

Jesse is another Dungeon Master but he also plays with other DM’s. Jesse found it’s a great way to spend time with people and to get to know them better. Playing Dungeons & Dragons allows you to interact with new people and see how they act / react to situations. This shows a better representation of themselves and their personality letting players to connect better with each other.

DYLAN LUTTERMOSER

Age: 22 Experience: 7 years Job: Little Caesars Manager

Molva explains his entrapment and warns you of many things to come…

Dylan finds Dungeons & Dragons a great way to relax in a healthy way. The game transports you into a different world with characters, places, and stories. Your free to explore and create your own plot with no restrictions. The game becomes this platform of social therapy that you share with friends.

+132

Dylan goes all out when he plays, he causes chaos, pushes the limits, and does what he wants. He likes causing issues because it forces other players to react and engage without warning. This makes the story even more improved and random; which keeps players attention and evokes more of an experience.

SEAN CARBARY

Age: 22 Experience: 2 years Job: Little Caesars Assistant Manager

You circle yourself in salt for protection from the dark entity. Impressed by your skills, the demon king grants you knowledge…

Sean plays Dungeons & Dragons for the character creation. Players make their own characters from different races, classes, jobs, and backgrounds. Players are free to develop and create as much of an identity as they want. They can write backstories, adventures, create artwork, and even dress up as their character.

+134

It’s a great tool for people to think quickly and randomly to create something fun. Sean enjoys the fighting and the story driven aspects of Dungeons & Dragons. The weird social interactions are fun but the fighting is where Sean can show his skill. Creating strategies to defeat strong enemies, being able to hold off swarms of enemies by himself, and creating openings for friends to attack.

YOU GET TO BE PART OF A TEAM

Unlike in Monopoly, in fantasy games you’re not a ruthless real-estate mogul bankrupting your fellow players by putting hotels all across Middle-earth, from Hobbiton to Mordor. While you can complete some tasks on your own and make individual decisions, most of the story action requires your adventuring party to work together to accomplish quests. Collaboration means recognizing the power of teamwork and diversity. In D&D, humans can’t go it alone, and neither can any other culture — be they elves, dwarves, wizards, thieves or warriors. Let’s go back to that scenario with the troll. Let’s say your characters choose to fight the monster. Your team has a range of skills to draw from — spell casting, fighting prowess, healing powers, seductive charm. Each member plays a part. The same occurs in the real world with your officemates, your family or other groups when you have to finish a project at work, host an elaborate meal, build a startup, or plan a trip. Each person in the circle contributes. D&D’s lessons are: Celebrate your differences; it’s OK to rely on each other; I’ve got your back.

Golden Caves

That surging feeling of camaraderie — of being part of something bigger than yourself — is a powerful thing. As a kid, I was too uncoordinated to play team sports, but I received the bonding experience of mutual accomplishment through D&D. (Who needs football when you can shoot fireballs from your fingertips?)

Life is like that dangerous dungeon — you need to be prepared, and you shouldn’t wander through it without the tools to MacGyver yourself out of trouble. For instance, you wouldn’t drive a car without having a spare tire in the trunk. Or when you walk your dog, you know to bring your smartphone, some treats, and extra poop bags.

15MI

Back to the dungeon. You discover a long corridor with a strange pattern of tiles on the floor. Your loveable but blundering dwarf steps on the first tile. You hear a click. Arrows shoot out at you from the darkness — it’s a trap! Then, you remember that scrap of paper. Could it be a code? Maybe L means left, C is center, R is right? Solving problems also requires perseverance. You must begin at the first — the lowest — level. You’re a wuss with just four hit points. You have a rusty sword. You cast a spell that makes … pancakes. Have patience. As you gain experience points, you will grow in skill and strength. You do this by taking risks, which lead to reward. Let’s go back to the troll. Want to leap from the castle wall onto it, and bang the monster on the head with a rock? Go for it. The game lets you take risks and fail in a safe environment. Sure, your character could be gravely injured or even die (if your DM is particularly mean). But that’s a chance you can take in the game, and the risk is made all the safer because your fellow teammates are there to catch you if you fall. If you die, a cleric can resurrect you. And you get to try again. Take it from this 17th-level nerd, it gets better — you can and will heal from defeat, setback, embarrassment. If I’m shy and fearful and stupid in real life, in the game I can play a wise and fearless dwarf. I can practice being courageous or wise in these fantasy worlds before I’m ready to be courageous and wise in real life. Playing D&D empowered me to confront my arch nemesis at school and my mother at home, so I could live and fight another day.

These games don’t work without story and imagination. Look at this map I drew back in the Reagan Administration: Focus on it for a moment. I’m guessing your wondering mind is now activated. You’re asking questions like, What is this place? Who lives here? What’s the story? What happens next? While movies, TV shows and video games offer immersive narratives and worlds, they don’t engage the imagination in the same way that D&D does. The game’s crude tools — its maps, sketches, dice, books, figurines — force you to fill in the gaps. You must bring your imagination to the table to complete the picture. Humans used to sit around the fire telling each other stories. But today, most of us settle for being passive consumers of Hollywood narratives made with millions of dollars and thousands of digital animators. Storytelling, it seems, has been taken from us. Fantasy role-playing games return that power of storytelling to us. D&D sparked my imagination and kindled an interest in everything from geography to languages, history to poetry. It made me want to create, to be a storyteller and a world builder. And to take a leap and imagine a better world. Which leads me to this game’s most powerful magic. Stories not only connect us; they create hope. In D&D, there’s a rule. If you’re trying to do something and you roll a 20, no matter how impossible the odds, it happens. You can slay the troll with a single shot, kiss the girl, love your mother. Deep inside each of us is a dungeon with a powerful dragon. You won’t know whether you can defeat it — or even befriend it — unless you try.

Dungeons and Dragons is not only a creative influence to the players but also society in general. When the game was released it instantly captivated society prompting the desire for similar content for entertainment. The game was released in 1974, a few years later in 1977 build your adventure books were released. Structurally they captured the essence of the game (which also was built into this book) with allowing reader to create their own experience with a story. The visual designs of the books were also very similar to D&D books.

Currently the actual game has made its way into pop culture and media settings like the hit TV show Stranger Things. Many aspects about the show are taken from Dungeons and Dragons, the kids are even seen playing multiple times. The game keeps getting more and more exposure allowing it to spread and reach more audiences, raising more awareness about how fun and inspiring it can be. Entertainment communities, artists, and writers would all greatly benefit from playing D&D or already do, but the game can be played by anyone and everyone should try it. It provides them with a fun, creative, engaging social environment with friends or strangers.

0MI

5MI

10MI

As D&D players continually played their games and recording their adventures, some turned this passion into careers. Writers were some of the first influenced by D&D usually because they were Dungeon Masters. The DM writes, creates, and acts out their own personal stories which inspired many kids and young writers to think more creatively and develop new ideas. It has not been confirmed but even Steven King has had references to D&D in his books. Eventually the game extended its influences into movies, video games, etc.

Dungeons & Dragons gave the entertainment community a new passion to develop plots and create more imaginative stories that they can be enthusiastic about. Story and plot was just handed to directors with rigid rules and outcomes but now directors wanted to cultivate and reimagine settings. D&D motivated the entertainment community and can be seen in all forms of media. From older games like Myst to current games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy, etc. TV and movies were also influenced like X-Files, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Buffy, Lost, etc. Silent Forest

You report Ingram to local authorities for piracy but end up locked up too. You both become great cell mates… Ingram’s race is an orc. Orcs are a mysterious race that are not native to lands and their origins are unknown. They treat battle scars as tokens of pride and ornamental scars as things of beauty. However, there are other scars that signify a former slave or disgraced exile. Ingram’s class is a custom called gunslinger. With being a pirate, Ingram has gained a great proficiency over firearms. Ingram carries multiple types of guns on him at all times so he can use the right weapon for the right job. Gunslingers can dual wield their guns to increase damage and attack speed.

Ceti grants your request, she teaches you about herself and her people... Ceti is part of the Teifling race. Tieflings were humans that were planetouched; humans infused with the touch of the fiendish planes, most often through descent from fiends, demons, Yugoloths, devils, evil deities, and others who had bred with humans. Ceti’s class is a rogue so her personality is cold, harsh, calculated and only in it for the money. She refers to herself as a bitch sometimes but is a strong asset to her team of thieves.

You keep Molva locked away and use his power for your own personal gain‌ Molva is part of the most widespread race of fiends, demons. They are usually chaotic evil entities that have no rules or laws. Molva was a chaotic demon that was entrapped within a flute, and who ever plays the flute will be able to use his abyssal powers. Molva is also an assassin class. They are extremely deadly specialist in sneak attacks and far more powerful than rogues and thieves. They prefer to take out targets from the distance with poisons and darts, however, they always have a plan to trap fleeing targets and are skilled in up close combat.

Dungeon Master (DM)

Initiative

Nat (Natural)

A DM is someone out of the group of players that acts as the story teller. They progress players through the campaign, create additional characters, set up combat, and keep the player immersed in the game.

Players will roll for initiative, which determines their order of attack in combat. Enemies also roll for initiative.

Nat means natural. When someone rolls a 20 its a nat 20 however, somone can roll a lower number and with their modifiers still get a 20 but it is not the same at a nat / crit.

Critical (Crit)

Race

Modifier

Rolling a crit is when you roll a 20 on your dice. This means you not only succeeded in your action but you went above and beyond.

Race is the type of race the character is. In D&D there are many knids like Demon, Elf, Drow, Dwarf, Human, Teifling, Etc.

Modifiers are character stats that are added to specific traits. Depending on what you are rolling for these numbers can be added to your rolled number to increase your overall score.

Critical Fail

Class

Character Sheet

A critical fail is when you roll a 1. This means you failed to perform your action and in doing so, you ether injured yourself or a teammate.

Class is the fighting style of the character. Classes have different play styles and systems. There Mages, Rouges, Bards, Druids, Paladins, Etc.

A detailed sheet of stats, items, skills, attacks, weapons, etc. that represent the character.
