WHAT’S NEW AT SEANIC?
SEANIC’S LARGEST FULL SCALE TEST IN NEW TANK As a culmination in a plan set in motion several years ago, Seanic successfully completed the largest, full scale test, to date in its state-of-the-art test tank in Katy, Texas. The test, carried out on behalf of a major Operator and Engineering contractor, involved 3 days of operations whereby equipment that was designed and built by Seanic was tested in a full-scale System Integration Test (SIT) environment.
installation of the system was possible using one ROV within the constraints of the space surrounding the existing structure, e.g. existing piping meant that the ROV could only access the work-site from certain angles. Seanic’s scope included the Check Valve Structure Clamp Assemblies, Riser Structure Clamp Assemblies, a temporary Deployment Frame, an SIT
Skid that mocks up the current subsea structure, and a free-issued Check Valve with Clamp as to mock up the hull. For the SIT, Seanic hosted 9 members from the clients’ project teams for 3 days at their new Katy, TX facility. As part of their new facility, Seanic built a 50 ft square by 30 ft deep test tank, complete with a 10T crane and resident FMC Schilling HD vehicle, owned and
The client required an increase in the cathodic protection (CP) of an existing check valve, which was originally intended to be subsea for 5 years. Increasing the cathodic protection to 25 years involved the production and installation of a new CP system which could be retrofitted to the existing subsea system.
Tom Ayars,
The CP system included Check Valve Structure Clamp Assemblies which were to be installed onto the existing check valve providing electrical continuity between it and the Riser Structure Clamp Assemblies through connection via a 20 ft long jumper wire. Once all clamps were torqued on their appropriate members, a CP reading was performed to ensure proper cathodic protection.

“This is exactly the type of service we planned to offer our clients, when we first conceived the idea of building a test tank. This contract that Seanic is now able to provide from our new facility, encompassing not only our engineered solutions and our core ROV tooling products offerings, but also the ability to conduct full-scale SITs in our new test tank”
operated by Canyon Offshore. Clients were able to witness the testing, as it progressed, from a dedicated conference room with 70” HD screens offering them multiple views of the testing in progress. Seanic provided personnel support including quality, project management, engineering and technicians throughout the testing, as well as access to ROV tooling required to complete the testing. Additional video feeds from the ROV and also from an observation class, Seabotix vLBV, ROV, provided by Ashtead Technologies, provided multiple view angles and enabled the project team to direct the ROV pilots to focus on specific tasks in more detail. The test proved the system and was deemed a success by the clients’ project
teams. The project called on the type of one-stop-shop services that Seanic is now able to provide in that it involved engineering and manufacture of unique intervention equipment to provide a solution to a clients’ requirement. It also then required the full-scale testing of this equipment in an SIT format utilizing Seanic’s new test tank as well as support from Seanic’s traditional ROV Tooling product lines. Seanic is offering the tank to companies wishing to test their own products, or conduct SITs, as well as offering product demo days to companies wishing to showcase a particular product to their own clients.

DEEP CLEANING COLLABORATION WITH A MAJOR OIL COMPANY YIELDS REVOLUTIONARY NEW TOOL The implementation of an effective Integrity Management (IM) plan for offshore oil & gas facilities is critical to ensure compliance with standards, codes and legislation. Inspection plans and preventive maintenance plans are vital to ensure safe and efficient operations. Of particular focus in any comprehensive IM plan is anything relating to production of hydrocarbons, in essence, anything that could potentially cause a release of hydrocarbons if a failure were to occur. One such area was a focus for Seanic Ocean Systems, shortly after the company’s inception in 2007. Steel Catenary Risers (SCRs) are commonplace in today’s deepwater floating and fixed oil production platforms and are used to transfer oil, gas, injection water etc. between platforms and pipelines. An SCR is typically suspended from a host platform using a flexible joint, which allows for angular motion between the host platform and the SCR. This helps reduce the bending moments in the upper section of the SCR. Preventive maintenance and inspection of these flexible joints is necessary to ensure the highest safety and reliability. Therefore, it is important that an Operator inspects the flexible joints in all of their SCR
10/ Featured Products 2016
installations on a regular basis – typically at a minimum of every year. The critical area in a flexible joint to inspect is on the underside of the joint. The joint allows an SCR to attach to the topside via a flange which is allowed to flex through movement of a rubber bellows arrangement. This rubber arrangement is open to seawater and is visible on the underside of the joint. Over time this surface becomes contaminated with marine growth such that it is impossible to see the rubber surface, much less provide a detailed analysis to the asset operator. Previously, flexible joints were cleaned by divers using scrubbing brushes or water jetting blasters. Brushes were typically ineffective and water blasters have the potential of damaging the rubber surface. Inspection was usually a simple visual inspection, offering no consistency between subsequent inspections, or, at best, a photographic record was taken. Again, depending on the environmental conditions, the quality of the picture taken, etc., it was difficult to gain any sort of consistency year-to-year to determine if there were anomalies in the rubber surface, that perhaps were changing over time.
In 2007, Seanic Ocean Systems was approached by a major oil company to help develop a solution that would allow flexible joints to be cleaned more effectively and to provide a consistent and accurate record of the condition of the joint. The result was a tool design that Seanic co-patented with them. The tool’s key features are as follows: 1. Allows for easy integration to a variety of work class ROVs. 2. Can fold the tool vertically to allow for deployment through moon pools. 3. Allows the ROV to push the tool to the riser when protective braces or shrouds prevent the ROV from getting in close to the riser. 4. Once attached, the tool can index in and out, rotate 180 degrees each way, allowing the operator to clean and inspect the flexible joint without having to reset or reposition the tool. 5. Emergency breakaway connector allows for disconnection from the tool in the event of a dead sub. Once ROV is repaired, the entire tool can be removed and connection can be re-established on deck. The tool was designed to be deployed
by any work-class ROV, utilizing a Tool Deployment Frame to attach to the underside of the ROV. The tool itself is docked onto the front of the tool deployment frame ready for ROV deployment. The tool is flown by ROV to the riser and clamped to the riser in position just below the flexible joint. Risers can vary in size from 4” to 24” in diameter. The ROV undocks from the flexible joint tool and remains attached through a short umbilical to provide control functions to the tool. A 360 degree HD digital still and video is taken to record the ‘before’ state of the flexible joint. A brush attached to a motorized assembly on the tool is used to clean the marine growth from the underside of the flexible joint. The brush assembly is able to rotate 360 degrees around the flexible joint allowing access to the entire surface. The brush itself was the result of many hours of R&D to ensure the most effective and efficient cleaning possible, without causing damage to the rubber element in the flexible joint. Once the cleaning operation is complete, the detailed inspection of the joint is the
next process. Inspection can be carried out by using high definition cameras and 3d laser scanning systems, which provide high definition visual inspection, as built 3d CAD modelling, 3D high density mapping of deformations and anomalies, such as cracks, dents, and bulges. The visualization equipment is mounted to the Seanic Flex Joint Cleaning Tool (FJCT) after the cleaning operation has been completed. The tool is also designed to work with interchangeable tool trays, so that various inspection cameras, lasers, temperature probes, cleaning tools can be used, as required. The operation of the tool is conducted by a Seanic technician through the use of a joystick, tooling computer with GUI interface inside the ROV control van.
As a result of the service performed, Operators are able to track any anomalies found and can see in detail if there is any deterioration over time, allowing them to plan ahead for future maintenance of the flexible joint. With the rigorous demands on today’s operators with regards to safety of operations and protection of the environment, Seanic is proud to offer a service which assists Oil & Gas Operators by ensuring their SCR installations operate safely and in an environmentally friendly fashion.
PLAY VIDEO FOR OUR ANIMATION
Currently, Seanic has successfully cleaned and inspected over 275 SCR flexible joints for 7 different oil & gas companies, primarily in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2015, Seanic completed its first International flexible joint inspection project, in West Africa. Operators are now considering the technology for their fields in other regions including South America and the Far East.

SEA CHEST COVERS
MULTIPLE SIZES
Seanic Ocean Systems has designed and manufactured ROV-installable Sea Chest Covers in a variety of sizes, used for UWILD and for marine maintenance activities on subsea platforms. During a UWILD the external hull must be cleaned and inspected, in addition to the replacement and/or repair of internal systems inside the hull.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS ROV-FRIENDLY
Seanic’s Sea Chest Covers are used to plug the open flange during inspection and maintenance campaigns. The Sea Chest Cover operation and functionality is imperative to the successful sealing o of the internal hull while personnel and equipment are inside performing the inspection and maintenance.
DEPENDABLE SEALING
The differential pressure at the sea chest flange provides a sealing mechanism allowing for the seal face of the Sea Chest Cover to stay in place and prevent seawater from entering into the sea chest flange. Clamping mechanisms on the sea chest covers provide additional security for the connection and sealing force. An internal bladder on the sea chest is inflated using a seawater injection pump providing an internal sealing element as a secondary measure to prevent any additional seawater from entering the hull in the event of a slow failure of the primary face seal.
EFFICIENT MARINE MAINTENANCE
The design of Seanic’s Sea Chest Covers is ROV friendly, and capable of being deployed and installed efficiently. Seanic’s API 17H FLOT and Class 1-4 torque tool is used to deploy and lock the Sea Chest Cover onto the sea chest flange.
