Issue #35 APR-JUNE, 2018
Welcome to our 35th Edition as we continue on the Way to Japan. The countdown has started. August 1, 2018. Barbados. IKD World Championships. The TKA is in full competition training mode as we prepare for the biggest event on the TKD\IKD calendar of events this year Persons who took a break have been seen dusting their gis and gear and recommenced training to participate in their category of events. In 2015, we took home the Gold Cup which is awarded to the country with the most gold medals. We aim to repeat that win this year but he completion will be harder as the IKD has grown exponentially during the last three years. So participants: Keep training !!!

August 15-20, 2018 The 3rd IKD World Tournament will be held in Barbados this year. Those Karatekas who attended the past two tournaments in 2012 and 2015 in Toronto, Canada will recall the high level of competition. Nothing less is expected this year. For those who do not understand the role of tournaments in the life of a Karateka, below is an excerpt from the 2018 Judges’ Rule Handbook which seeks to explain the philosophy behind having such tournaments.
Traditional Budo Karate “The Ultimate Aim of the Art of Karate lies not in Victory or Defeat, but in the perfection of the Character of its Participants.” Gichin Funakoshi, Founder of Karate-do The Karate Shiai (match or tournament) is an important component of training, which leads to the accomplishment of the four objectives of Budo Karate: 1. Philosophy of Character Development attainable through the discipline of karate training. 2. The aspect of Physical Education and Fitness. 3. The Art of Self Defence, and 4. As a way of testing one’s technique in tournaments.

Issue #35 APR-JUNE, 2018
In karate, the mind controls our thoughts, emotions, and physical movement. In this regard, emotional stability equals self -control, and when used in combination with the tremendous physical power that emanates from the seika-tanden, the mind and body produce the highest degree of kime in karate. There are three methods of testing one’s technique in traditional karate: In actual real life self -defensive situations, in karate rank examinations, and in tournaments; the object is to maintain stable emotions. In all three cases, the aim is to accomplish the objective with the highest degree of proficiency. This calls for mental clarity that is free from nervousness, fear, and anxiety. Moreover, the “kara” in karate, not only means empty hand, but , it also means one must strive to empty one’s mind of all emotions to clearly see impending attacks or to confront issues or challenges without distracting emotional input.
