Issue #36 JULY - DEC, 2018
Welcome to our 36th Edition Fellow Karatekas Again the TKA lost a Karate stalwart in the person of Sensei Theo, who passed away in August 2018. He was a dedicated Karateka who was loved by all his students, senseis and colleagues. This edition gives us some memories of our dear Sensei Theo. May he rest in peace. Unfortunately due to time constraints the producers of the newsletter have taken a decision to produce a bi-annual magazine until further notice. Notwithstanding this decision, this edition is full of exciting news and photos of the many events that the TKA participated in, both local, regional and international. As we approach the yuletide season, let us remember the reason for the seasonthe birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. May the peace of Christ surround each and every one of us as we prepare for 2019 and beyond leading up to 2020. Enjoy OSS!!!

TRIBUTE TO
SENSEI THEO by Shian Shim and Sensei Simone Thorne Mora
Shian Shim A karate man is first and foremost, a man who understands the Dojo Kun - “Seek perfection of Character, Be Faithful, Endeavour, Respect Others, and Refrain from Violent Behaviour” and one who allows his life to be deeply influenced by it. This was Theo, and so he was a Karate man in every respect.
Sensei
Theophilous Faustin more affectionately known to us as Theo, was born in POS 1950, he started Karate at the Hospital Karate Dojo in 1983 and it was there that I first met him when I took over as Instructor from Sensei Lennox Jeffrey. It was the start of a long friendship. He was the voice of calm reason in the dojo and could be counted to keep the balance and peace as young students started coming in from all corners of Port of Spain and its environs to learn how to fight as in those days ‘Kick up movies’ were the thing and our Dojo was in East Dry River. I distinctly remember there was one particularly aggressive student from the area, David Thomas, who used to have his Gi pants rolled up to his knees and his Gi top sleeves rolled up to the elbows as he said he wanted to be free to kick and punch hard without restrictions. I told the Senior students to speak to him. They decided among themselves that Theo would be the safest one to tell him. Well clearly Theo was the correct choice because without seemingly much noise or trouble David appeared next class with his Gi in place normally and nothing was ever said of it again. That was Theo’s strength. David became our model student story. No doubt with Seniors like Theo around, he learnt that calm discipline and became a Police Officer but sadly passed away suddenly some years ago. Theo then moved on to start the Real Spring Karate Dojo and at his passing had achieved the rank of 4th Dan. and had become a qualified Instructor with the International Shotokan Karate Federation.
I knew Theo as a soft spoken man but highly nsei Th disciplined person whose counsel I had learnt Se to value deeply. Over the early years when we were left to run the TKA on our own Theo was one of the key people I could rely on for simple but wise advice on approaching many matters concerning the building up of this new organisation. Right up to recent times whenever there was an important decision I wanted to make in Karate I would get together the original founding members of himself, John George , Gregory and Frieda for a chat. Theo would be there as the one to take the path of least resistance without compromising his deep seated belief that discipline must be the underlying premise by which we should do everything. John, Gregory and Frieda would want to plough through and get the task done as swiftly as possible but Theo would be the voice of more restraint at the same time without compromising the principles of Karate which he so believed in. His unwavering loyalty and the sharing of a true and long lasting friendship were two of Theo’s great gifts to us that Frieda and I cherished deeply. He was like a column of support always there in the background and I could always count on a safe haven from him. Through Theo we met Barbara his wife and his children and grandchildren, the foundation from which this fine man launched his life. In addition to being a good performer of Kata. Theo was also a good Kumite fighter in his early days. His long reach front kick and reverse punch would find its mark and he won a number of medals over the years through his calculated use of these techniques. He even took part in the 1996 World Championships while we were still with the JKA and 90 countries participated and put up a good showing of his skills. Theo had a great way with teaching children. He was old school in his uncompromising approach to discipline, but at the same time he had this grandfatherly way of dealing with the little ones so that they knew there was no nonsense to training but there was also the

“do not worry bring them by me” and so they started and continued training under him at Valsayn until they were ready to do their dan exam. Today they represent TKA throughout the Caribbean and North America in Karate. He gave them the foundation and instilled the love of Karate in them at a tender age. Not once did they ask to drop out of his two hour class, held every Saturday and Sunday morning. And talk about punctuality, Sensei Theo was a stickler to punctuality. He started his class promptly at 10.00am every Saturday morning and 8.00am every Sunday morning.
gentle guiding hand that would take them through the paces and prepare them like any great teacher for their grading exams and competition. To say we as an association would miss Sensei Theo’s presence is an understatement. He was a cornerstone of quiet strength in the Association and in the Dojo, even in the midst of his health struggles in the latter years. An excellent karate instructor and disciplinarian who managed to balance ‘the yin and the yang’ the opposites of life in Karate - the gentle with the strong. He was a dear friend to many. For Frieda and I, we have lost a cherished person and a relationship that was like a gemstone finely shaped over the years to fit snugly into its casing. Our deep sadness at his passing cannot be explained adequately with words. Our consolation is that he is with The Father in the manner according to the Creator’s plan and undoubtedly would have found the rest and peace promised to faithful people like Theo. My friend may you continue to Rest in that perfect Peace the world can never give.
Sensei was therefore a living embodiment of the Dojo Kun and influenced the lives of many, who passed through his dojo. My fondest memory of him was back in 2014 when during the Caribbean IKD tournament I quietly complained to him that I could never beat my sister in Kumite because she had a fast gyazuki. In a similar manner, he quietly taught me to score on her that year using my mygri kick. She was confused that year and I caught her off guard, not expecting it from me. Unfortunately for me the next year, after coaching from Sensei Natakki she was ready to block my mygeri and swing a mean gyazuki once again. Ah well Sensei Theo, you did try with me and for that I thank you.
Sensei Simone Thorne Mora I will always remember Sensei Theo. A true gentle giant whose bark was worse than his bite. He would scold you in his powerful voice when you deserved it and we responded not out of fear but out of deep respect because you knew he meant well. He was a patient man. I always use the example of my nieces, the Lue Fatt twins to provide testimony to the type of man he was. The twins were under 5 years old and wanted to start training at Tora. Their mother was told that they were too young to start and to come back in a year’s time. Seeing the disappointment in their eyes he said
I only knew Sensei Theo for about 7 years. Many of you all know him for almost 3 times that. But you know what, it does not matter if you knew him for 5, 10, 15 or 30 years. He all touched our lives in a positive manner and that is what counts. Sensei as you stand in heaven and look down at us, we smile at your memory. Know that you are not forgotten and your living was not in vain. May you rest in peace. AMEN.

Issue #36 JULY - DEC, 2018
Congrats to our TKA representatives, Sameer Ali and Anthony Thomas, who went to Mexico represent at the end of October to represent the red, white and black flag. It was a brilliant showing by both guys at this meet. Sameer emerged with a 4th place in Kata just missing the podium. Anthony also scored 2 points in his first international premier youth league tournament losing by only 3 points...
