weLCOME TO THE March ISSUE Welcome to the March edition of Turbulence.

FROM THE EDITOR

Firstly I would like to offer my sympathies to the people devastated by the effects of of Cyclone Pam. So far it has claimed 24 lives, displaced thousands and wreaked havoc and destruction upon Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Kiribati and the surrounding islands. Please, if you can, consider donating to appeals for relief through official organisations such as Unicef or Oxfam. Your assistance could make a huge difference. This month, we officially welcomed aboard the Victorian Farmers Federation. We are proud to be VFF’s official travel partner and look forward to representing the travel needs of Victoria’s farmers, doing our part to help expand their horizons and support the growth of our amazing farming industry by keeping their travel costs down. A huge thank you to our airline and car hire partners who, like us, realise the value of our farmer’s and have done everything they can to bring a smooth take off to this wonderful new collaboration. We have a fantastic edition lined up. Prepare for this year’s ski season with some brilliant deals to New Zealand’s premier tourist destination, Queenstown. Disney fans will also be pleased with our amazing packages to Disney World and Disneyland. Also, don’t miss out on some awesome fares on Malaysia Airlines. MH are a fantastic airline, despite their recent tragedies, and we wholeheartedly support them on their runway to recovery. Where have you Been? We want to know. SKI

This month, we put the focus on Queenstown and Canterbury, the two biggest ski areas on New Zealand’s South Island

6 | TURBULENCE MARCH 2015

Though the island nation is geographically small, the sweeping landscapes seem immense to awestruck visitors taking in the jagged mountain peaks, rolling hills, sparkling beaches, scenic fjords, raging rivers and pristine lakes that make up the stunning scenery of New Zealand.

Queenstown’s popularity is also due to the fact that it is a year round resort, a renowned alpine playground for skiers and snowboarders in winter and activities such as jet boating, bungee jumping, luging, white water rafting and paragliding in the summer months.

New Zealand is an adventurers paradise, with opportunities to try activities like scuba diving, hot air ballooning, rock climbing, and other extreme sports; especially in adrenaline-packed Queenstown, the ‘extreme sport capital of the world’.

CANTERBURY

Yet the urban life and culture of New Zealand is just as fascinating, with the traditions of both Maori warriors and British settlers playing a part in everyday life. Major cities like Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington have excellent restaurants and nightlife to entertain the most determined partiers, and fascinating museums and cultural attractions to satiate the NZ$19 billion tourism economy. New Zealand’s rustic blend of Western and Polynesian culture combines with its stunning scenery to attract travellers seemingly to the end of the world.

QUEENSTOWN Queenstown is New Zealand’s premier tourist destination, offering visitors the chance to indulge in almost every adrenalin activity imaginable. With its magnificent scenery, set on the deep blue Lake Wakatipu and framed by the craggy Remarkables Range, Queenstown is appealing to adventurers and leisure seekers alike. The lake is the perfect setting for steamer cruises, there are many fine walking opportunities in the surrounding hills and valleys with breathtaking views, surrounding vineyards offer wine tasting, shopping at the town’s many boutiques, and the nearby historic gold mining town of Arrowtown is a fascinating day’s outing. Scenic flights take visitors on unforgettable excursions, such as those around the majestic peaks of Mount Aspiring and Mount Cook, or to Milford Sound.

Not far from Christchurch, Canterbury is one of the most popular ski resorts in New Zealand. Mount Hutt is the most developed ski area in Canterbury; the resort caters for skiers of all levels, with good intermediate and advanced runs, and a ‘magic carpet’ lift for beginners. There are also some excellent off-piste areas, including a run through the Towers rock formations at the top of the mountain. One of the main disadvantages of Mount Hutt is its location on a very windy section of mountains in New Zealand. The ski area is forced to shut down roughly 14 days per season due to dangerous winds. The drive to Mount Hutt is also rough, so most drivers unaccustomed to mountain and snow driving take the shuttles from Methven. The ski season in Canterbury lasts from June to October. There is no accommodation on the mountain, and most skiers stay in the small town of Methven, which has a few bars, cafes and restaurants; the larger towns of Hanmer Springs, Ashburton and Christchurch are both about an hour’s drive from the mountain.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2006, a Brisbane man attempted to sell New Zealand on eBay with a starting bid of AUD$0.01. Six thousand hits and 22 bids later, the bid stood at $3,000 when eBay pulled the listing for violating the website’s terms of service.

BEFORE YOU HIT THE SLOPES We know you will be excited about embarking on your winter sports holiday, but take one extra moment to ensure your travel insurance has you covered for skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling. Even the most experienced skiers, boarders and snowmobilers can have accidents. Don’t let injury or lost equipment interrupt your holiday – get snowboard and ski travel insurance. It is important to understand when you are covered and just as important to understand when you are not covered. Some useful information to take in to account when considering snowboard and ski travel insurance: • You can receive cover for injury, lost equipment and other mishaps • It is generally an add-on to your insurance and comes at an additional premium • You may not be covered if you are racing or participating in a professional capacity • You may not be covered if you are skiing off-piste • Snowmobilers may not be covered for personal liability as a snowmobile is considered to be a mechanically propelled vehicle SEAN SIMMONS

TIP

Thoroughly read the Product Disclosure Statement of your policy for full details on the cover provided when skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling.

MSC ORCHESTRA

VISITS MELBOURNE

Two members of the Sean Simmons Travel family, Kat (Leisure) and Brett (Marketing), were treated to a tour and lunch aboard the stunning MSC Orchestra during its recent visit to Melbourne, joining other travel agents from across the state. After being welcomed aboard, they were given a lively presentation showcasing the destinations, ships and levels of experiences available throughout the MSC fleet. Afterwards they split into groups, and, together with a member of MSC staff, it was time for them to get walking as they toured every corner of this amazing vessel. After all that exercise, they sat down to some exquisitely prepared Mediterranean cuisine in a three course lunch in the Villa Borghese Restaurant. The quality and attention to detail was everywhere, from the towel animals to the subtle touches in all the décor. Coupled with the friendly service from the impeccably dressed crew, the experience had quite an impact on the dynamic duo. “I never thought cruising would be for me. If this is what it’s like I will actually give it a try”, Kat said after getting a taste for the facilities and food aboard the MSC Orchestra. 18 | TURBULENCE MARCH 2015

“Agreed, I could definitely get used to that sort of lifestyle. It’s obvious they hold themselves to a very high standard,” adds Brett. What advice would they give to someone wanting to do an MSC Cruise? “Unless it’s completely unnecessary, I’d definitely suggest booking one of the higher level experiences,” imparts Kat. “For all the extra inclusions you get, like your drinks, it is well worth the extra initial outlay – especially for the longer cruises.” Sean Simmons Travel have been working closely with MSC in recent months to bring you the best in Mediterranean cruising and we are very excited to now be able to draw on our first-hand experience of what MSC have to offer. Call and speak with Kat about arranging your MSC experience today

BEEN - So where have you Been? GET bragging rights as the most travelled amongst your friends. Proving once and for all that less is indeed more, Martin Johannesson and three friends developed a simple yet effective app that allows you to select the countries you have visited, shows them on a map and also turns them in to a percentage to display how much of the world you have seen. “It shows you a percentage as opposed to just a number, since that hopefully makes you think about how big the world really is…” Martin told Sean Simmons Travel when we touched base with the developer. Impress your friends with your worldliness by sharing your map to social media, email it or simply save it to your camera roll. Martin said they were a bit confused by all the attention the app had gained, an app Martin dubbed a ‘hobby project’. “We also just love stats, I guess,” he added. A Ray of Hope for the Future

Part two of A special report on the Sunrise children’s villages - Supporting orphaned, abandoned, vulnerable and disadvantaged Cambodian children. 22 | TURBULENCE March 2015

Due to immense poverty, many Cambodian children are unable to attend school on a regular basis as they are needed at home to care for their younger siblings and family members while their parents work. In August 2104, Sunrise launched the region’s first community-based Khmer Pre-School. Located within the grounds of Sunrise, Phnom Penh, the PreSchool gives 50 children from neighbouring villages access to a quality early childhood education, delivered by professionally trained teachers – completely free of charge. Providing a Pre-School service for younger children then allows their older siblings and family members to attend primary and secondary school – ensuring all children receive a holistic learning experience and have the opportunity to reach their educational milestones. Each morning the Sunrise mini bus travels around the neighbouring villages and collects the children from a central meeting point and drops them off at the PreSchool. For the next four hours, the Pre-School students complete a series of exercises and activities geared towards improving their literacy, numeracy and oral language skills, while also equipping them with important social skills and traditional values such as manners and respect for others. Sunrise Pre-School teacher Prum Ratha has been

educating young children for the past 10 years. Since the Sunrise PreSchool opened eight months ago, Prum Ratha said the students’ general knowledge, behaviour and social skills had improved greatly. She said giving children the opportunity to attend Pre-School and develop an understanding of what school is like and how to behave and respond in a classroom environment from a young age, provided them with a foundation for learning that would help them reach their full potential as they transitioned in to primary and secondary school. “When the children have the foundation, when they study in grade one, grade two, grade three, is much better because they know more and they have attended class,” Prum Ratha said. “Our students are smart and very good.” Meet Phoek Sreyteav (pictured left) Phoek Sreyteav hopes her son Thron Channdeth will become a doctor. For the mother-of-two who does not know how to write her name and was forced to drop out of school when she was just 9-years-old to help with the housekeeping, her dream for her son comes one step closer to reality each day that she sees him board the bus to the Sunrise PreSchool.

Sean Simmons Travel is proud to support Sunrise Children’s Click HERE to offer your support.

good because I do not understand much about the letter,” Phoek Sreyteav said. “I want Channdeth to study until year 12 or university. I want my son to be a doctor.” Since starting Pre-School, Phoek Sreyteav said Channdeth is constantly singing and dancing, reciting the lessons his teacher taught him that day. “He very enjoy,” she said. “He is smarter then and he is faster then. “When he comes back from school he shows more respect for the parent.” After marrying and starting a family, Phoek Sreyteav began work in a garment factory where she can earn as little as $45 a month. She said she is grateful her son is able to attend a quality pre-school, without charge. “Sunrise is more high quality then outside,” she said. “It also has the playground, it has many activity there. If Channdeth stay here (at home), he doesn’t study, he just walks around and plays with another child.” Meet Choeum Keang [Pictured left with her husband] One of the greatest improvements Choeum Keang has noticed in her granddaughter Vanny Chenda since she started attending Sunrise PreSchool is her increased social confidence and level of manners.

When friends and family come over to visit, fouryear-old Vanny Chenda is now quick to start having a chat with them or to sing some of the songs she has learnt at Pre-School. “Everybody that come visit, she talks about the Pre-School and Sunrise,” Choeum Keang said. Choeum Keang and her husband have lived less than two kilometres from Sunrise for the past 30 years. They are the primary care givers for their granddaughter. Choeum Keang’s husband was serving in the army in the early 80s when he lost both his legs in a bomb explosion. After marrying in 1989, the Choeums began their own fishing business. Each morning Choeum Keang and her husband travel down to the river to catch fish before taking them to the market to sell on his bicycle which is equipped with special hand-pedals. Choeum Keang said she is thankful her granddaughter has had the opportunity to study at the Sunrise PreSchool. She hopes Vanny

Chenda will continue to build upon the foundation of her early education and will one day finish high school and get a good job. “When a child has a chance to study here, they are very lucky, more lucky than student who study at another school. She is very lucky to send a child to study here,” Choeum Keang said. Geraldine Cox, founder of the Sunrise Children’s Villages and ‘big mum’ to all the Sunrise children, is turning 70 this year. The staff at Sunrise are working tirelessly to bring 200 new sponsors on board before Geraldine’s big day in June. We’re told the campaign has been very well received so far and has generated strong interest online. They are still a ways off their goal yet though – so the more help we can give them the better. PREMIUM ECONOMY

In an economic climate where people want more for less, we have seen significant changes in travel behaviour.

Many airlines have listened and risen to meet the desires of a new class of traveller. This particular traveller wants the benefits of creature comforts but is also discerning on how they spend their hard-earned money and may balk at the hefty price tag that can be attached to a full business class fare. Enter, Premium Economy. Touted as ‘economy plus’ or ‘business-lite’, depending on the offering, Premium Economy sits comfortably between the two, filling a niche that is slowly but surely growing in popularity, particularly among business and upmarket leisure travellers. Premium Economy is not a new concept. EVA Air was the first to introduce a Premium Economy Class back in the early 90s. Move forward almost 25 years later and the term has still not been standardised, not

all airlines have it as an option and offerings vary wildly between carriers and aircraft for those that do. What can you expect? Generally, you can expect slightly wider seats and more legroom. This is probably the only standard extra, however the amount of legroom on offer is definitely not standard. Where you get 31-34” of legroom (on average) in economy, that may increase to anywhere between 34” and 41” in premium economy. Turkish Airlines offer a whopping

46” in their ‘Comfort Class’ cabin. Premium economy is now, more often than not, in its own cabin with dedicated attendants. Other extras may include priority boarding, enhanced entertainment, improved menu and additional amenities. Here, we take a quick look at just a sample of what’s on offer:

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA International short haul passengers will enjoy a slightly larger seat, all inclusive food and beverages package, wireless in-flight entertainment, priority check-in and increased baggage allowance. In addition, International long haul passengers

have an even larger seat (19.5” wide and 6” more legroom than economy), an amenities bag including REN cosmetics, a plush blanket and pillow to make your journey more comfortable and further enhanced menu and entertainment options. With some exceptions, premium economy guests are able to enjoy either Air New Zealand Koru or Virgin Australia lounge access when travelling on VA Trans-Tasman services. At this time, lounge access is not available at international airports for premium economy guests travelling on long haul international services.

CATHAY PACIFIC Priority check in and boarding, a slightly larger, more ergonomic seat, additional legroom and an increased baggage allowance are some of the features of the Cathay Pacific premium economy offering. If you are travelling longhaul, additional benefits include a welcome drink and hot towel, enhanced

entrées, and complementary bottled Qantas water. An environmentally friendly amenities pack is also included, featuring socks, eyeshade, earplugs, toothbrush and toothpaste.

QANTAS The Marc Newson designed seats in premium economy are wider, ergonomic and with additional elbow room on the centre console (so less fighting over arm space with the stranger beside you!). You can also stretch out with some extra legroom. A complimentary sparkling wine or beverage will welcome you aboard and you will enjoy a Neil Perry inspired menu on Marc Newson-designed tableware. Enjoy snacks and drinks throughout the flight as part of their continuous service and self-serve bars available on the A380 and refurbished B747. On select flights, you can also pre-order from Qantas’ International Premium Economy menu – inspired by Rockpool.

Air New Zealand A complimentary comfort kit contains all the essentials, including eyeshade, toothpaste and toothbrush.

AIR NEW ZEALAND By many accounts, Air New Zealand lead the way in premium economy. They offer a range of premium economy ‘experiences’ which vary depending on the aircraft. The experiences have everything you want from a premium economy cabin, heaps more room, enhanced menu, priority boarding and enhanced entertainment options. However their piece de resistance has to be their Spaceseat™. Available on their 777-300 aircraft, the Spaceseat is truly a revolution in the premium economy stakes. It is closer to business class

than it is to economy. It allows for the ultimate experience of personal space, as the design means the person in front of you will not intrude on your space. The seats that run through the centre of the cabin have been designed with couples in mind. You can relax together or share a meal by turning to face each other, while those on the sides are more suited to those who need some privacy to work or rest. As premium SEAN SIMMONS economy offerings vary from airline to aircraft, always check with your Sean Simmons Travel Expert exactly what you are getting when you book.

Travel information & Industry News Costa Concordia Skipper Gets 16 Years Jail

Schettino’s lawyer, Domenico Pepe, confirmed his client would appeal.

An Italian court has sentenced Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino to 16 years and one month in prison for causing the 2012 cruise ship disaster that claimed 32 lives.

“The fact that the judges almost halved the sentence sought by the prosecution has restored a bit of honour to him,” Pepe said outside court on Wednesday.

Schettino, 54, was sentenced at the end of a 19-month trial, three years after the giant liner struck rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio. The conviction of the man dubbed “Captain Coward” by the media and “an idiot” by prosecutors is subject to appeal and Schettino will remain free for the time being. The disgraced skipper, who had earlier tearfully appealed to the court for mercy, was convicted of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning his ship with passengers and crew still on board. On top of the prison term, he was banned from public office for life and from working as a ship’s captain for five years. His sentence was significantly lower than the maximum 26 years and three months prosecutors had called for. Despite that, the prosecutors declared themselves “completely satisfied” with the verdict.

Adelaide Wins DreamtimE Adelaide will host dreamtime 2015, strengthening its place as a leading business events destination in Australia. Tourism Australia’s managing director, John O’Sullivan made the announcement ahead of start of Business Events week in Melbourne, and alongside 28 | TURBULENCE MARCH 2015

Schettino was accused during the trial of recklessly steering the giant cruise ship on to the rocks with more than 4000 people on board, negligently delaying an order to abandon ship, and then leaving the ship himself in a cowardly and unprofessional manner. In his defence, Schettino had argued that his crew was to blame for the collision, that the delayed evacuation might have saved lives, and insisted he fell off the tilting boat rather than fleeing in fear. Schettino had also claimed he was being made the sole scapegoat for the disaster and had been the victim of a media witch-hunt. “I have spent the last three years in a media meat grinder,” he said. Schettino’s lawyers had sought throughout the trial to demonstrate that he could not be only person responsible for the deaths that occurred, given the multiple contributory factors.

They argued a poorly-trained crew was responsible for setting the ship on its fatal course and that the practice of passing close to shorelines to entertain passengers was effectively company policy. Charts on board were not accurate and, crucially, the Indonesian helmsman, Jacob Rusli Bin, was unable to understand an order from Schettino to change course just before the collision, the defence contended. Costa Crociere, the company that owned the ship, sidestepped potential criminal charges in 2013 by agreeing to pay a 1 million-euro ($A1.47 million) fine. Survivors of the disaster who had rejected Costa’s initial compensation offer and had become civil parties in the Schettino case were awarded damages of 30,000 euros. Among those who will receive the payout is Domnica Cemortan, the blonde Moldovan dancer Schettino was entertaining over dinner just before the ship hit the rocks. Five Costa employees including the helmsman and crisis co-ordinator were sentenced to up to two years and 10 months each in plea bargains concluded early in the investigation.

We believe Adelaide and South Australia provide the perfect gateway for our key international buyers to experience a fantastic array of experiences and destinations on offer in Australia – and it’s an ideal time for the city to showcase

its new developments,” O’Sullivan said. Dreamtime will be held between 6-12 December and will bring more than 100 of the world’s top level travel buyers including agents, incentives houses and companies that book incentive programs and events to Australia for a five day experience.

Qantas will have everything from movies, TV shows, and music beamed to a customised app on the Minis, via inflight WiFi over the airline’s Q Streaming network, which shares the same range of content with economy as business.

Qantas will also issue newdesign headsets in economy that swaps the old foam pads for flexible silicone earpads that improve noise reduction, according to AUSBT. MSC CRUISES CANCELS ALL REMAINING SUMMER 2015 CALLS IN TUNISIA Four ships will begin to sail amended itineraries with immediate effect 20 March 2015 – In the wake of Wednesday’s (18 March) terror attack at the Bardo National Museum, in Tunis, MSC Cruises has decided to suspend all remaining Tunisian calls in the 2015 summer programme in the interests of guest and crewmember safety. Itineraries affected by the change will impact four of MSC Cruises’ 12 ships as follows: • MSC Splendida will call at Valletta, in Malta • MSC Fantasia will call at Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca • MSC Preziosa will call at Cagliari, in Sardinia • MSC Divina will call at Valletta a day earlier and head directly to Corfu, Greece Tunis has long featured on MSC Cruises itineraries, and the city’s extensive range of cultural offerings have proved very popular with visitors. MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago said: “Sadly, the murderous actions of the people behind this devastating attack will have far-reaching and profoundly damaging effects on democratic Tunisia and its faltering economy. Tunisia can little afford to be considered a no-go zone at this time, but regrettably that is how tourists will now see it.” The safety and security of guests and crewmembers is MSC Cruises’ number one priority at all times, and the events that

took place this week preclude the possibility of MSC Cruises calling in Tunisia for the foreseeable future. MSC Cruises remains in continuous contact with relevant government ministries and international bodies, and does not consider additional itinerary changes to be necessary at this time. Mr Vago added: “Tunis is a key destination for MSC Cruises, and we hope to be able to restore it to itineraries in due course. But until we receive the necessary reassurances that the security situation has returned to normal, we have to take our guests to alternative Mediterranean destinations.” He concluded: “I want to personally thank the Tunisian authorities for the way they have addressed this exceptionally challenging situation, and for enabling us to implement our own response plan effectively. New Arts Funding a Boon for Cultural Tourism The Baird government is backing Sydney’s cultural infrastructure with new major investments. Strengthening Sydney’s rep as a hub for the arts, the Premier and Deputy Premier have confirmed that $202 million will be spent on the renewal of the Sydney Opera House, as well as a further $139 million to go on Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) chief executive Margy Osmond said this is great news for Sydney. “The arts have been crying out for investment and this money will go a long way toward making Sydney a more attractive, more

competitive destination not just within Australia, but across Asia.” “TTF has long advocated for increased arts funding and especially for the need to improve existing facilities at the Sydney Opera House. The Sydney Opera House is arguably one of the most famous buildings in Australia and is at the top of every visitor’s ‘must see’ list, yet it is in dire need of investment. The projects outlined as part of this renewal will make a marked difference to the experience of visiting our most prized cultural icon. “Similarly, the funding for the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct will allow further investment in what is an increasingly popular destination in Sydney.

consecutive year with the International Airline of the Year Award. “By winning the Domestic Airline of the Year for the second consecutive year, Qantas has shown the country that it’s back on top and doing what it does best: making air travel enjoyable for its customers,” Roy Morgan Research’s CEO Michele Levine said. “Singapore Airlines’ third International Airline of the Year Award begs the question: can this airline do any wrong?” she added. “If only all international air travel was so pleasant.”

Anchored by the Sydney Theatre Company, the Walsh Bays Arts Precinct will become an internationally renowned cultural hub.” Osmond said the announcement shows the benefits of asset recycling, offering a once in a generation opportunity to invest in infrastructure across the state – from cultural infrastructure, to public transport, roads, schools and hospitals. “I congratulate the Baird government’s ongoing commitment to the cultural development of Sydney. This announcement comes off the back of a $123 million funding boost for tourism,” Osmond said. TTF will release a comprehensive agenda for tourism in NSW soon.

The award was announced 18th February in Melbourne, after the airline was recognised as Best International Airline for customer satisfaction for a total of 11 months out of the year. Singapore’s senior manager for marketing and alliances Australia, Dale Woodhouse, accepted the award on behalf of the airline, saying it was a testament to the value and service customers receive on board. “The ongoing commitment from our staff to ensure we deliver only the best each time we fly is something we always remain proud of,” he said.

IMPORTANT VIRGIN AUSTRALIA NEWS Since February 19th, changes to Virgin Australia’s booking platform now prevents any changes being made to an itinerary if you have checked in already, either online or at the airport Voluntary Changes on day of departure or after check-in On the day of departure or after check-in, if fare rules permit and you need to change your flight, the below procedure applies. • We are required to contact the Virgin Contact centre to have you “un-checkedin” before we can do anything. And wait times can be long. • Once you are unchecked, we can amend the booking, reissue the E Tickets and finalise the arrangements • We strongly recommend that, if you are on a day return, DO NOT check in for the return leg if there is any chance you will be early, or, late!! Please use your PDA to check in closer to departure when you KNOW you will make the flight.

New destination in China for Virgin Australia Virgin Australia has also announced an expansion of its codeshare network in China. As part of its codeshare alliance with Silkair (subsidiary of Singapore Airlines), Virgin Australia will be

adding Hangzhou to its route network. The introduction of this codeshare service brings the airline’s number of codeshare destinations in China to 11, offering travellers a greater number of connections between Virgin Australia and codeshare partners Singapore Airlines and Silkair.

EMIRATES SKYROCKETS TO number 196 in the top 200 worldwide brands

Silkair operates four return services per week on the Singapore – Hangzhou route, using new, two-class Boeing 737800 aircraft. Convenient connections are possible to and from multiple Virgin Australia cities across Australia and New Zealand via Singapore.

are the ones who live, breathe and deliver the Emirates brand every day in the work they do. The strength of the Emirates brand also underscores the positive impact that we are making on our industry, and we will continue to work hard and invest in our brand.

According to the 2015 Brand Finance Global 500 report released this week, Emirates’ years of hard work, which left it in the Top 500 for four consecutive years, had finally paid off.

“Our aim is to become one of the world’s leading lifestyle brands, and to make the Emirates name synonymous with aspirational travel and experiences.”

Now sitting at #196 – a leap of 38 spots in just 12 months – the airline attributes its success to a strong commitment to product and service excellence, along with investments in its brand.

Brand Finance CEO David Haigh commented on the accolade, saying Emirates remains the flag carrier for the entire Middle East.

Emirates’ estimated brand value has grown more than 21% from US $5.48 billion to US $6.6 billion. The airline also retains its long standing position as the most valuable brand in the Middle East, and the most valuable airline brand. “Emirates is a global company serving a global audience, and as we grow our business we have to also grow our brand,” Emirates Airline’s president Sir Tim Clark said. “Our brand strategy does not only involve marketing and sponsorships, but everything we do including product innovation and service delivery. For us, our customers are the ultimate judges and jury. “Being named the most valuable airline brand in the world is great recognition for each and every one of our staff, as they

VIRGIN ATLANTIC HONOURS 17 YEAR OLD FREE TICKET PROMISE In a customer service coup, it was recently reported that Virgin Atlantic have honoured a free ticket letter that was issued 17 years ago. After a plane fault in 1996, Virgin issued the unidentified passenger with £200 worth of vouchers and a letter offering a free ticket ‘at any time’. “Over the years, with children arriving, we didn’t take any long-haul flights”,

“Its $6.6 billion brand value makes it both the region’s most valuable brand and the world’s most valuable airline. Its extensive sports sponsorship and global route network make it recognised the world over. However it is Emirates’ exceptional service and reliability that truly underpin the brand,” Haigh said. In 2014, Emirates marked a record launch of 10 new A380 routes, bringing the network to over 145 passenger and cargo destinations, and spanning six continents. In 2015, the airline will operate an average of 3,500 flights per week, increasing the number of city-pair combinations that the airline offers, and growing its fleet to over 230 aircrafts to service these offerings.

wrote the anonymous passenger in a letter published on The Guardian website. “Last year I wanted to accompany my parents to India and saw that Virgin flew to Mumbai. I found the letter and rang Virgin on the off-chance they would still honour it.” The letter continued. “Astonishingly, they said that, as it was such a long time ago, the best they could do was offer 400 towards a flight. I managed

to get a return economy flight for 468 – making the total cost just 68.” But that wasn’t all. “My parents were on a separate booking and arranged for us to sit together. Pretty brilliant all round.” We agree, this is pretty brilliant. Customer service of this calibre ought to be applauded whenever and wherever it happens.

TRAVEL TIPS DON’T BE THE DOPE ON THE SLOPE – HERE IS YOUR GUIDE TO BEING A SAFE AND COURTEOUS SKIER THIS SEASON

32 | TURBULENCE MARCH 2015

Skiing can be a fastpaced, adrenalin-fuelled adventure and plenty of fun for everyone no matter what your skill level. It can also be dangerous if people aren’t careful. Our research shows that experienced skiers have a list of pet peeves as long as the Sarenne*. In order to avoid having people ‘piste off’ with you, we have condensed it together with this simple, mostly common sense guide to ensure you, and those around you, have a fantastic time.

If you’re a beginner or haven’t skied in a while, invest in a lesson

Relying on pointers from your friends or watching a few YouTube videos is no substitute for the knowledge you will receive from a professional ski instructor. New skiers are strongly encouraged to take a few lessons. Likewise, if you haven’t skied for a few seasons and you’re feeling a little rusty, there is no harm or embarrassment to be found in working out the kinks by getting a refresher. It will set you off on the right foot and make you a much happier and safer skier. Plus, your friends will regret snickering at you once they’re eating your powder.

Challenge yourself, but play within your skill set

Don’t make a jump from blue runs to black diamond runs simply to impress your friends. Not only are you putting yourself and other skiers at risk, the only impressive thing is going to

be how epically you yard sale. For those who don’t know what a yard sale is, it’s when you stack it so badly your skis, poles, hats and gloves end up all over the slope. (If you’re still confused, it kind of looks like the photo to the right.)

Don’t fly past accidents - help out your fellow skiers If you see someone else having their own yard sale, stop to help. Not only are you being a Good Samaritan, you are helping keep the run clear of hurdles and therefore keeping everyone safe. By helping others, you’ll also be able to continue your run with that warm fuzzy feeling that only comes from doing good deeds.

Stay off closed runs

Runs are generally closed for a reason, be it for maintenance, hazards or other reasons. Not only does disregarding closures make you look more tool than cool, it may also cost you your season pass.

Spatial awareness is your, and your fellow skiers’, best friend

While it may have been many moons ago, every skier was once a beginner. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings, especially if you wish to avoid crashing into that group and their instructor. If you see someone who is clearly trying and struggling, give them plenty of room. Remember the things that made you feel nervous or uncomfortable when you first started?

Source: Gear Market

Avoid doing those things. Another spatial awareness tip is when you are carrying your skis over your shoulder – always keep the tails up and tips down. Anyone who has been whacked in the face with a set of skis will definitely understand why.

Queuing and gondola etiquette 101

When going to popular ski destinations, packing a healthy amount of patience is essential. You will need to spend some time in queues and cutting in lines is extremely frowned upon. Smoking is also a huge no-no, both in the line or on the chairlift. No-one wants to breathe second hand smoke, and throwing that butt (or any rubbish, for that matter) in to a pristine snowfield is pretty shameful. When in a gondola or on the chairlift, keep conversation fun but polite – no loud, overly personal or crass conversation.

Don’t drink and ski

While it might seem like fun at the time, even being a little bit tipsy can affect your reaction time and puts you and other skiers at risk of serious harm. Enjoy your fun on the slopes and later you can don your post-ski finery and relax with your friends a few drinks at the après bar.

Have an awesome time!

Be safe, respectful and aware and you are guaranteed a great time on the slopes. *The Sarenne in Alpe d’Huez is the world’s longest on-piste ski run

SEAN SIMMONS

RECOMMENDS Mornin’ Gorgeous Great Food, Great Coffee, Awesome Service I always enjoy supporting local business and this one deserves a special mention, as they keep me and my staff regularly fed. I don’t drink coffee, but my staff swear by it and it is always their first stop in the morning. Whatever they put in their signature boutique blend certainly does the trick. They have a full breakfast and lunch menu and thankfully, plenty of pre-made takeaway options like focaccias and wraps for those who, like me, often don’t have time to eat, let alone order a meal. A great thing about this little gem is

all their goodies – pies, sausage rolls, muffins, cakes and banana bread is all made in-house and has that home-made taste and feel. If you’re a Richmond local or in the area and looking for a local gem, definitely make a point of trying them out - they are open 7 days a week until 3pm.

Plus, mention this recommendation for your $1 coffee.
