CULTURAL CENTRE FOR CRAFT AND GAMES
Located along New Bridge Road, the Culture Centre of Crafts and Shadow preserves and promotes the dying cultural practice of shadow puppets, through workshops on the craft and performance spaces designed for shadow puppets in mind. Additionally, traditional games are also provided at the centre, to promote interaction between the young and old by introducing pockets of games on every floor, as well as a few dedicated spaces for “game arenas, where different groups of people can use the space at once. Spaces are divided into two different blocks, with bridges that connect them and act as social space. Translucency in the building is done through layering of different materials, as well as the use of translucent concrete as part of the structure of the building. Among all these uses, the Cultural Centre also provides an extension to the rooftop of the neighboring Kong Chow Cultural Centre, giving them more space to conduct activities such as martial arts and lion dance.

REFRACT IN THE HISTORICAL DISTRICT OF CHINATOWN, REFRACT IS A CULTURAL CENTRE, ENVISIONED AS A WORKSHOP, FOR TRADITIONAL CRAFT AND GAMES. SERVING ADDITIONALLY AS AN EXTENTION THE EXISTING CULTURAL CENTRE, KONG CHOW HUI KOON, REFRACT HAS AN EMPHASIS ON THE DYING CRAFT OF SHADOW PUPPETS IN SINGAPORE. ADAPTING THE IDEA OF SHADOWS AND UTILISING THEM IN MY BUILDING THROUGH THE IDEA OF SPACES CREATING SILHOUETTES OF THE MOVEMENT OF THOSE USING THE SPACE, BLENDING THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING. WITH A TRAPEZOID SITE,THE JUXTAPOSING FLOOR PLATES CREATES OVERLAPPING SPACES BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT FLOORS, WITH TWO VOIDS TO INTRODUCE LIGHT INTO THE BUILDING. THE CENTRAL VOID CREATES OPEN “BALCONIES” THAT OVERLOOK THE VOID GOING ALL THE WAY DOWN.

SPEAK/LISTEN AN IMAGINARY PROJECT SITE WITH THE IDEA OF CULTIVATING DREAMS AND STORIES, A PAIR OF CONTRASTING WORDS,SPEAK/LISTEN, WAS THE BASIS OF THE DESIGN. DERIVING THE IDEA OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE USER, ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO CONVEY THE IDEA OF RELAXATION AND REST BY USING SOFT EDGES AND CURVES THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN OF THE BUILDING. DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE BUILDING, WHICH IS SURROUNDED BY 4 EXISTING BUILDINGS, THE DESIGN CALLED FOR A RESPONSE TO ALL 4 NEIGHBOURING BUILDINGS. THIS WAS DONE THROUGH USING THE SAME CURVED FLOOR PLATE AND ANGLING THEM TOWARDS THE NEIGHBOURING BUILDINGS.
NAGA SCHOOL AN OVERSEAS PROJECT LOCATED IN INDONESIA,BANDUNG, IN THE AREA OF TASIKMELAYA, THE PROJECT WAS DESIGNED AS A SCHOOL FOR KINDERGARTEN KIDS AS WELL AS OUR TARGET AGE GROUP OF 6-12, WHICH WOULD BENEFIT BOTH PARTIES. LOCATED IN KAMPUNG NAGA, A VILLAGE IN TASIKMELAYA THAT IS FAMOUS FOR THEIR PRESERVATION OF THE TRADTIONAL KAMPUNG LIFESTYLE, I WAS INSPIRED TO DESIGN MY BUILDING WITH THE USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS IN MIND. THE IDEA OF A LOOP COMES TO MIND WHEN PLANNING OUT A LAYOUT OF A KINDERGARTEN, FOR THE SAFETY OF THE STUDENTS, AS WELL AS CONVENIENCE OF THE TEACHERS. BASING THE ENTIRE DESIGN OFF THE IDEA OF AN INFINITY LOOP, THE DESIGN IS SPLIT INTO 2 DOUBLE FLOORED TIMBER STRUCTURES HOUSING CLASSROOMS, TOILETS, A LIBRARY, AS WELL AS AN INDOOR PLAY AREA. CONNECTING THE TWO BLOCKS IS A CUSTOM PLAY AREA THAT ALLOWS CHILDREN FROM BOTH AGE GROUPS TO COME TOGETHER AND LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER.

A FLUID GALLERY AN IMAGINARY PROJECT, THIS BRIEF WAS AN EXPLORATION OF ERGONOMICS IN A CONSTRAINED SPACE. THE HOME, A 5M X 20M SHOPHOUSE, WAS FOR THE ACCOMODATION OF 2 ELDERLY, 1 WHEELCHAIR-BOUND, 2 YOUNG CHILDREN, AS WELL AS A COUPLE, WHOSE WIFE IS AN ARTIST AND THE HUSBAND DEALS WITH HER WORKS. ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS INCLUDED A MOVING GALLERY, ART STUDIO. THE DESIGN OF THE BUILDING IS QUITE SIMPLE, WITH A CENTRAL VOID THAT ALLOWS NATURAL LIGHT TO FILTER INTO THE DIFFERENT FLOORS OF THE BUILDING. THE PRIVATE SPACES ARE ALSO WELL OBSCURED, WITH THE CIRCULATION OF THE HOUSE ALLOWING FOR POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO MEET THE ARTIST DIRECTLY WITHOUT ANY INTRUSION INTO THE PRIVATE SPACES. BALCONIES AND A MEZZANINE FLOOR ALLOWS FOR THE FRONT AND BACK VIEWS TO BE MAXIMISED. A GREEN WALL RUNNING DOWN THE CENTRAL VOID PROVIDES FOR PRIVACY FOR SOME ROOMS, AS WELL AS COOLS DOWN THE BUILDING.
BIOMIMICRY A GROUP PROJECT BASED ON BIOMIMICRY, THE BRIEF CALLED FOR A LIFE SIZED MODEL FOR THE SUBMISSION, WITH A MODULAR STRUCTURE WITH AN INTERLOCKING STRUCTURE THAT WOULD ALLOW FOR A STRUCTURE FOR ONE PERSON. FOR OUR GROUP, WE CHOSE AN ABSTRACTION OF A BLUE ADONIS BUTTERFLY EGG AS OUR BASE. THE UNIQUE FEATURE OF THE BUTTERFLY EGG IS THE GRADUAL CHANGE FROM A 3-SIDED TRIANGULAR COVER TO A 4-SIDED TRAPEZIUM FROM THE SIDE OF THE EGG TO THE TOP OF THE EGG. THE IDEA OF EXTRACTING THAT GRADUAL CHANGE TO FORM OUR MODULE, WHICH WAS A 3 DIMENSIONAL DIAMOND SHAPE, WHICH WAS STRUCTURALLY STRONG ENOUGH TO CONNECT EDGE TO EDGE. WE ALSO CREATED AN INTERLOCKING SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR THE DIAMOND TO MAKE IT STRONGER AND MORE DURABLE.

NEW MEDIA CULTURAL CENTRE AN ABSTRACTION PROJECT, THE FORM CAME BEFORE THE USE, AND THE IDEA OF A SLANTED HIERARCHIAL SPACE, WITH DIFFERENT SHELTERED AREAS, AS WELL AS OPEN AIR ONES. THE IDEA OF AN OPEN AIR GALLERY APPEALED TO ME, AND I CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF A NEW MEDIA CULTURAL CENTRE, WITH THE USE OF MODERN PROJECTIONS TO PROJECT IMAGES ONTO THE NUMEROUS SCREENS THAT INFORMED PEOPLE GOING THROUGH THE PAVILLION TO NEW MEDIA, AS WELL AS PROVIDE SPACES FOR PEOPLE TO SIT AND RELAX.
