About Me
Hi! My name is Sean The, and welcome to my architecture portfolio! I am an aspiring architecture student currently studying at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I am an aspiring designer that believes that architecture has to benefit the people, surrounding environment, as well as have a sense of purpose. As an architecture student, I like to focus on the details in my designs as i believe that details bring out the most in designs.Designing from simple shapes and creating meaningful spaces. My interest in architecture began when i was younger, stemming from playing with LEGO as a child, as well as through pictures and family influences.

The site is surrounded by trees and foliage exceeding heights of 20m, facing the South-East and South-West of the site. Right infront of the site, two kampung style houses overlook the site. The site itself is raised 400mm above the ground, and a private plantation is located next to the site. The dimensions of the site given for our project was 15M X 20M, with a site coerage of only 50% and a GFA of under 200m2. The aim of this project was to design a kindergarten that would benefit the locals, as well and facilitate activities between the children of the kindergarten and our target age group. As my target age group is children aged 6-12, I had to design a kindergarten that could allow children of both age groups to bond together and interact with one another safely.

My concept for this project was actually the idea of a loop, that was inspired by the Fuji Kindergarten by Tekuza Architects, which was designed to be an infinite loop for children to run around in. I began designing by starting with an infinity symbol, to be the loop in my design. Then, by straightening out the loop of the infinity, my form for my building was created, with the idea of 2 seperate buildings, and a connection in the middle. Secondly, circulation was the most inportant aspect was of my design, and I got the direction of circulation by untwisting the infinity loop to get the shape of the rectangle. I also ensured that the circulation surrounded all the classroom and play spaces in the design of the kindergarten. Thirdly, the walls would be made of the traditional woven bamboo that allows both air and sunlight to enter the rooms, which also increases the ventilation entering the classrooms.

Kampung Naga Site Analysis
Kampung Naga Site Analysis Kampung Naga, located on the Indonesian island of Java, was the site that we had to survey for our Year 2 Final project. It is located 3 hours from the nearest big city of Bandung, in the Tasikmalaya Regency, in the region of Salawu. The Kampung itself is located in a valley, surrounded by the river Ciwulan and rice paddy fields. To access the kampung, visitors steps to reach the base level of after a bus ride. The main road leads from Singaparna to Garut, Kampung Naga.
and villagers must climb down 439 the kampung from the main road, to the Kampung is the road that which are the closest two cities to
The Kampung prides itself in being self sustaining and also being very traditional, through passing on their traditions to future generations. Surrounding the Kampung is their forbidden or sacred forest, as it is where their ancestral cemetery is part of. With a population of 298(est.) and a height above sea level of 685m, it consists of 110 houses in 1.2 hectares of space that are based off a modular design. If anything were to be broken or spoilt, the Kampung would come together as a community to fix it.

HUMAN CIRCULATION

A Fluid Gallery
A Fluid Gallery This project was a project which focused and relied heavily on ergonomics to design this shophouse. Firstly, we were given a site of 5m X 20m X 12m, with a building of similar height on each side. Fluidity was envisioned through the human circulation od the building. By locating the staircase all the way up one side of the building, I was able to plan my rooms and spaces accordingly. The requirements for this project was to have a home for 6 people, mainly 2 children, 2 adults and 2 elderly, with one of the elderly wheelchair bound. The client is an artist who has an interest in 20th Century art movements while her husband deals with her works. Thus, for my project, a viewing gallery and an art studio is required. When entering the house, work is placed closest to the entrance, with the discussion area being set right in front of the building. By maintaining all work related spaces to be closest to the circulation space, I am able to reduce the interference of work to the daily life of the client's family. By having a skylight in the middle of the home, it acts as a light tunnel, as well as a seperator of spaces, by dividing the private and public spaces in the home.

Espace Fracasse
This project was a group project that was done by my groupmates Caleb, Felicia, Ryan, Yong Sheng and I. The aim of this project was to extract a modular form from an object of nature.(Biomimicry). The objective of this was to create a life size 1:1 scale model of our modular design as a space to fit 1 person within a 2m by 2m area.

Espace Fracasse
The object of our Biomimicry project is the Blue Adonis Butterfly Egg, with its close up spike like structures. Through observations, we realised that the triangular pattern of the egg's outer casing gradually became 4 sided as it approached the top of the egg. We then tried to combine the two together by having two triangles connect edge to edge to create a diamond shape. To turn the shape into a 3 dimensional modular structure, we first experimented with the image above, however, we were unable to formulate a reasonable joining system, thus we instead made two diamonds, and placed a strut in the middle to create, what is in essence, a 3 dimensional diamond shape. As an interlocking system had to be created for this module, we used an interlocking system for the support struts as well as using side to side connections for the modular structure, as can be seen in the image below.

Abstract Pavillion
This project was a project that was based on abstraction. The abstraction material was a poem "Nothing Gold Cans Stay" by Robert Frost, Mozart's Symphony No. 4 and the movie "Hero". After doing basic abstractions for all 3 material, I chose to focus on the poem, 'Nothing Gold can Stay". In the poem, he states " Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. " I intepreted it as a breaking of sorts, and proceeded to try and capture the idea of fragmentation for the pavillion. I first started out drawing something very literal, which was a leaf that was decaying. After deciding on fragmentation as a idea, I drew something that was in the process of breaking apart just using straight lines, and used the shapes and proportions of the drawing to create my model for this project. To add emphasis on the idea of fragmentation, I used stocking to cover up some parts of my design.

Synergy In Elevation
This project was one of the first projects that I had done, with the idea of it going to be built. This was my Year 1 final project and it was the designing of a charging station for the new student plaza that was to be constructed in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The concept of this station was to have a charging station that would be inviting yet enclosed at the same time for the occupants, along with seating in the structure. It would be located at the side of the plaza, so as to not obstruct the circulation of the plaza but still be sheltered from the weather. The form of the structure itself is like a series of ups and downs, so as to cover up and open up different parts of the structure at the same time. As you walk past it, different views would be offered to you of the seating, charging stations, etc. The entire structure would have been made of granite, as granite blends into the overall feel of the structure. It would also serve as a seating area for the stage that was placed right infront of it.

New Media Cultural Centre This Project was yet another abstraction project. We were given a piece of styrofoam board, where anything and everything was accepted. I thus decided to make mine have a sense of hierachy and to make it look interesting, I made all the walls slant at a 45 degree angle. Only later did we find out that the model we created had to be turned into a usable space. I had an idea of an open air gallery, and I began researching ways to store pieces of artwork. It then dawned on me that I could use technology for this project, and I began thinking about sustainable energy, and each of the walls being giant screens instead, which would broadcast digital artworks when people walk past. I also researched on the use and application of photovoltaic glass for use in this project to passively generate sustainable energy.

As mentioned previously, this YEP trip was directly related to my Year 2 Final Project, and it was a fun and exciting experience overall. Firstly, going back to the kampung and seeing the kids and children that we interacted with the first time was so heartwarming. Being back in that environment, as well as actually seeing one of our classmate's design getting built was really cool. Secondly, through interacting with the locals we were able to understand more of their culture over 10 days as compared to the 3 days we spent there beforehand. We were able to experience the limits that they have by staying in the village, and also how they appreciate the things in the nature around them as it not only provides for them, but is also one of the traditions in the Kampung.
