Dear Editor, Myself and Husband are quite new to the area, we are both Doctor and Nurse and have worked rather relentlessly this passed year so haven’t had as much time as we’d have like to explore the area. We’ve been receiving your Seaside News magazines every month, which are absolutely brilliant. It inspired me to go out and take some pictures with my pup as a way to explore the area. So far I have been to Rest Bay, Kenfig Nature Reserve and Margam Park. I thought I could send you the pictures of any of them would be appropriate at all for the Photograph section - I’ve titled them The Four Legged Explorer. Sarah Cox, Margam
Dear Editor, This last month we have been engaged in several meetings/ discussions and the feedback received from each engagement has been very positive and encouraging. We have met with local groups ‘Shout’ and ‘The Porthcawl Civic Trust’, presented to full council and engaged with Sarah Murphy and her Dragons Den event at the Hi Tide. Our focus has been on encouraging written objections regarding the Statement of Reason/compulsory purchase orders - we hope our template letter helped? The primary objective is always to ensure that an area of sufficient size and suitability is both retained in public ownership and is protected from permanent types of development. Our vision is to then focus on the development of this land and ensure that it meets the community, environmental and future generations’ needs, relevant to this town, the borough, and its many visitors. Hopefully you all visited one of BCBC’s drop-in sessions at the Pavilion and you are now busy preparing your written feedback on what it is you were encouraged/discouraged by. It is certainly our priority to do so. As a united community we truly believe that we can make a real difference for our future generations and ourselves and so please, please do positively engage at any given opportunity that presents and have a VOICE. PLANET EARTH Dear Editor, Following a week on Social media, television and the press etc regarding Action Climate Week. I hold my hat up to being a hoarder keen recycler and could find use for most things, this trait of mine comes after many years of running a Preschool Nursery for many years in the past on limited finances this helped to shape me but it wouldn’t suit everyone. The world’s population is presently full of innovative ideas now in helping to reduce Co2 emissions and racing to Save our Planet. My husband and I have taken three or five grand children to Country Parks and Indoor Play Centers usually with a picnic but always using our own drinks bottles for the children individually and not buying more Plastic bottles. Also we now use soap and not liquid soap so that’s another bottle dispensed with, we hope to do much more to cut our Carbon footprint and respect our amazing Planet. Dear Editor, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the Bridgend Foodbank and Porthcawl Foodbank donations 2021 this year. We had 73 donators and filled a garage of toiletries! The donations will now be sorted and collected by the Foodbank and given to families in Porthcawl and Bridgend in time for Christmas. Toiletries are expensive to buy and a luxury for the families who use the bank. I am absolutely delighted that the people of Porthcawl, yet again, showed such kindness and generosity. The sense of community was so wonderful and it makes me proud of our town. Thank you to the original group of donors who didn’t think twice about joining us again this year and to our new members; it was so lovely to have you be part of it! Hope you all had a safe but enjoyable Bonfire Night. Now we can welcome Christmas. I expect that we would have had our Light For a Life Event by the time the December issue comes out. Thank you to those who came and supported us. The next event in our calendar is the Step Up for January. This is an excellent way for you guys to get fit and get some exercise in after Christmas. We ask that you complete 12,000 steps per day which can be done by running or walking whichever you prefer. I’m going to be running some of mine as I need to get in shape as I’m doing the Euro 3 City Cycle in September. You can sign up for both of these events on our website. www.costofcancer.org.uk. The number of people we are helping has increased, so the more we can raise the better. We don’t want to turn anyone away because we don’t have the funds so please do help us to raise money to help us help others. The human mind has up to 70,000 thoughts a day and as you read this a few more thoughts of disbelief go through your mind. A very large number and many of them are the same thoughts over and over again. Strangely enough many of the thoughts we choose are negative and can make us anxious or fearful and yet we keep on turning them over again and again. If we were prompted by a child, they would ask the question “Why?” And in spite of being older and wiser we have no idea what the answer is! Would you like to start and observe your thoughts and decide which ones to take notice of and which ones to release? Next time you have a repetitive unpleasant thought; notice what is going on with your body as well as your mind. Where can you feel it? Is there a restriction in your stomach, throat or head? Or somewhere else? Take a breath, let it go and on the next breath, breathe into the restriction and let it go. Repeat a few times until you feel the tension decrease. Well done you are on your way! NEWS PLACEMAKING IN PORTHCAWL Thanks to everyone who attended the recent drop-in sessions at the Grand Pavilion and provided valuable feedback on the council’s placemaking plans. With exhibition boards offering full details now in place at Cosy Corner and also available to view at the council website, there is still time to give your views and help inform our draft placemaking strategy. Among the potential opportunities that we want to explore as part of this are a modern multi-storey car park at Hillsboro Place, a luxury spa waterfront hotel, landscaping and pedestrianisation along the Eastern Promenade, a multi-million Metro bus link, the extension of Dock Street, fresh community space and much more. We remain extremely ambitious for delivering realistic, sustainable regeneration in Porthcawl. Placemaking is all about organisations, businesses and communities working closely together to deliver balanced development which meets local needs as well as planning criteria and legislative requirements. Wilderness Lake in Porthcawl, Frog Pond Wood Local Nature Reserve in Pyle, Bedford Park Local Nature Reserve, Parc Tir Iarll in Llangynwyd, Parc Calon Lan in Blaengarw, the Ogmore Washeries and Aberfields in Ogmore Vale, Tremains Wood Local Nature Reserve and Brackla Hill, Maesteg Welfare Park and Craig y Parcau in Bridgend will all share in the new funding. Part of the Cwm Taf Nature Network Project, the scheme is designed to create a partnership of organisations who will manage green infrastructure for the benefit of local people, businesses and communities. Improvement and regeneration work will be carried out to enhance access to high-quality green spaces, and engagement with communities will take place to develop plans for providing more ‘early years’ learning spaces. People will also be encouraged to think about how they interact with nature, and to discover what is on their doorstep. We have all come to recognise the importance and value of green spaces during the Covid-19 pandemic, and this project will be of great benefit as we seek to promote greater awareness. MORE CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES Thanks to £2.87m investment from the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal, plans are moving ahead to introduce charging infrastructure for electric vehicles across Bridgend County Borough. The first round of this will focus on candidate sites at the John Street and Hillsboro Place car parks, Salt Lake, West Drive, Mallards Way and along the Eastern Promenade. It also includes the Rhiw multi-storey, Innovation Centre, Pencoed park and rides and car parks at Brackla Street, Tondu Road, Tremains Road, Neath Road and Maesteg town centre. Each site is currently being assessed, and more details will be available soon. In other news, county borough businesses are showcasing their festive products online this Christmas as part of a festive drive to encourage residents to shop locally. A Digital Christmas website and app have been made available where businesses can advertise their products for free, and shoppers can take advantage of special offers, promotions, discount codes, competitions and more. You can also visit the Digital Christmas website for a virtual flight through Santa’s grotto, and a virtual meet-and-greet with Santa’s reindeer. NEWS SCHOOLS UNDERFUNDING MUST END AS a former school governor I was alarmed by a report published by the National Association of Head Teachers Cymru, which showed the true impact of years of chronic underfunding of schools in Wales. Per pupil funding in Wales stands at £6,600 - £100 less than England and a whopping £1000 less than Scotland. A school with 1,000 pupils – and many have more – loses £100,000 compared to England. That’s the money that would pay for repairs, for new equipment and cover other capital costs, which heads say they need. The recent budget has delivered a massive boost to the finances of the Welsh Labour Government which is getting £2.5 billion more from the UK Treasury this year on top of the £15.9 billion it was due to get anyway. This money is meant to help Wales recover from the shock of the pandemic and as the education of our children was so badly affected by school closures, Welsh Government is honour bound to ensure that it is used to boost education spending. What it cannot do is squander it on vanity projects like Universal Basic Income under which everyone would be given a state income regardless of need or means. WELSH GOVERNMENT MUST INVEST MORE IN SPORT Oscar Wilde once said that a cynic was someone who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. I am afraid that the Welsh Labour Government may be in that bracket as it has failed to invest enough into grassroots sport in Wales despite the recognised value of sport not only in health terms but also in hard cash. The FAW has done a study, which showed that football clubs and players generate a total of £552 million for the country. This is made up of £263m for the economy, social benefits of £84m and savings to the Welsh NHS of an estimated £206 million. Putting a price on how being healthier saves the NHS money is difficult but there is the non-monetary value of having a fitter population in terms of people living longer, better lives not blighted by the diseases caused by obesity and inactivity. That really is priceless. As Shadow Sports Minister, I urge Welsh Government to invest more in all sports and sporting activity in Wales in pursuit of our long-term aim of creating a healthier population able to work productively for longer and enjoy their lives to the full. DOES PORTHCAWL NEED A TRAMWAY OR LIGHT RAIL LINK? Public transport is massively important to every community in Wales and Porthcawl is no different. The Cardiff Capital City Region Deal, which is jointly funded by UK Government, Welsh Government and local authorities, places the improvement of transport infrastructure at the heart of economic regeneration and has decided to fund a new bus terminus in Porthcawl. But some Porthcawl residents say there’s no need for a new bus station as bus services operate effectively using the existing stops in the town. It has also been suggested that the money would be better spent carrying out a feasibility study into the possibility of creating either a light rail link or tramway between Porthcawl and the railway station at Pyle. This would give Porthcawl residents a direct link into the rail network. While a feasibility study does not commit anyone to anything, it would look into the pros and cons of providing Porthcawl with a fixed link similar to the railway line, which closed in the 1960’s. NOTTAGE PRIMARY - A VIP VISIT As we move to the end of the term, it is worth mentioning a few student events at school. Our school participated in a Minecraft Education event, sponsored by the Welsh Rugby Union, which involved our team of three girls designing and building their own virtual rugby club of the future within Minecraft, paying particular attention to the needs of the local community. We were delighted to reach the regional finals and our team of Meryn Bridge, Seren Davies and Connie Howe went on to be announced as the winners of the Key Stage 3 & 4 category. Staff from the WRU attended school and presented the girls with their award, along with a signed Wales rugby shirt which is now proudly hanging in our foyer. On another matter, the School Carol service will be a virtual event again this year. Canon Masson has very kingly “loaned” us All Saints Church in order for us to film our service. On Thursday 21st October we had the pleasure of hosting the Welsh Minister of Education and Welsh Language, Mr Jeremy Miles to celebrate our Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru / Arts Council of Wales project in conjunction with Architects Caukin that took place last academic year with Year 3 pupils to design and build an outdoor structure. The process went from deciding on the location on school grounds, size, function, design concept then models both physical and digital 3D were created and then to the BIG build. Pupils worked with Harry from Caukin over several weeks in school both before and after the school closures caused by the pandemic. Pupils gained a plethora of new skills and were able to see how classroom work transferred to the ‘real’ world during all aspects of the process. All the pupils took part in the ‘big build’, some painting, some measuring and using angles, some made the ribbons and they showed great teamwork whilst sawing the wood. We hope to have inspired young engineers, creative designers, architects, and builders of the future. Our visitors also had the opportunity to view our new Outdoor Learning philosophy for Years 3 to 6, where our pupils have been taking part in a plethora of outdoor activities in the morning of each day. Representatives from CAUKIN and the Arts council attended along with some of our school Governors including the Chair Mrs Allison Thomas, representatives also came from Bridgend Council, Cllr. David, Cllr Smith, Sarah Murphy MS and Bridgend Education department. The visit was an overwhelming success and we at Nottage are privileged to have received such incredible feedback from all our visitors on both the Arts Council project and our new Outdoor Learning philosophy.

FEATURES CHRISTMAS AND DOGS Christmas is coming, so here’s some tips on how to keep your dog happy during this festive season. • Foods that your dog can enjoy (in moderation); skinless turkey and chicken, sausage, ham, sweet potato, most green veg, parsnip, mashed swede and carrot (no butter added). • Foods that they can’t have; Christmas cake/pudding, mince pies, macadamia nuts, walnuts and stuffing (contains onions). • Do not leave chocolates laying around or hanging on the tree. Poisoning happens as dogs aren’t able to metabolise theobromine effectively. • Make sure any holly/berries, mistletoe and poinsettia are well out of reach. • Take care with tinsel and other decorations, such as glass baubles, as these can cause an obstruction or injury if swallowed. • Be careful that there are no trailing cables or tree lights, as they can shatter and cause injury or your dog can get tangled up in them. • Anchor the tree securely – especially if you have a puppy or rambunctious adolescent hooligan! You may like to pop a barrier around the tree to keep it safe, as well as the presents underneath it. • Keep lit candles away from your dog’s tail wag zone. • Keep an eye with dog-dog interactions, even the best of friends can get a little protective over new toys. • If you can’t actively supervise your dog, then just shut the door of the room that you don’t want them to go in. • Give your dog their own presents to open. Wrap them loosely in brown paper or cardboard, making sure that it’s just being ripped not swallowed. • Make sure your dog has their safe place to remove themselves from the hustle and bustle if they want to. If your dog does become overstimulated and over tired, then here’s some calming activities they can do; • Sniff out either some of their food or tiny goodies in the garden or suitable room. • Give a loaded Lickimat or Kong with either some of their wet food or some mashed banana or dog friendly peanut butter on/ in it. • Give your dog a brand new long lasting healthy or natural chew in their safe place. A whimzee, yaker, dehydrated fish stick, beef hide or trachea. •Hide some of your dog’s dry food in a snuffle mat or rolled up towel. Here’s wishing you and your dogs a very Happy Christmas! For Christians, Christmas is not about us, it is about Jesus Christ. If we lose sight of the momentous significance of His birth, life, death, resurrection and promise to return then the heart of Christmas is missing. Christmas becomes just another excuse for a party, which eventually leaves us feeling empty and unsatisfied in the deep places of our soul. Instead, if we remember and celebrate that ‘God so loved the world he sent his only Son so that whoever believes in him may not perish but have everlasting life’ then Christmas takes on a much deeper meaning. Christmas may be spoiled by our selfishness and wrong expectations, but it can’t be spoiled by supply problems. It’s not about the party it’s about the birthday boy. CCTV has now been installed at the Reserve and this in conjunction with forthcoming ANPR and regular visits from the local police will help to keep everyone safe when they visit the Reserve. I am sure that by now most people will be aware of the forthcoming introduction of car parking fees at the Reserve. This was my no means an easy decision to make however, for the day-to-day operation of the Reserve to continue alongside continued development it became an absolute necessity. To reassure everyone it has been agreed that costs should be kept to a minimum and there will be an option to become a member of the Friends of Kenfig which offers a reduced annual parking charge of £45 per year (working out at approximately 12p per day).
I am writing this article the day after Remembrance Sunday, a significant and poignant day in everyone’s calendar for many reasons. You may or may not be aware that during the second world war over 5000 American troops joined a convoy across the Atlantic and arrived in Swansea. The troops disembarked and were transported to billets in and around Kenfig. There was an air-gunnery school at RAF Stormy Down where more than 10,000 aircrew trained, and the local beaches were used for target practice especially Sker Beach. When D Day approached orders came for the troops to move out, many were involved in the fiercest fighting throughout the rest of the war and very sadly some would never return to their homes in America. This intrinsic link with Kenfig Nature Reserve ensures that we remember these American Servicemen and Women along with all the British soldiers who fought so bravely for our country. Now back to the present day, our next Farmers Market is on 5th December and will run alongside our Christmas Craft Fayre. On the day we will be entertained by Briton Ferry Silver Band and the Cool Hand Ukes, and there will be a switch on of some new Christmas Lights (big thanks to Centregreat UK for their generous donation). Mulled wine and hot chestnuts will also be available to help everyone get into the Christmas Spirit. There will be an additional Farmers Market on the 19th of December to allow people to get everything they need for Christmas Day (keep an eye out for the Santa & Elf Motorcyclists on the day!!) It is really wonderful that the local community is so supportive of the Farmers Market especially as it enables us to support so many small business owners coming out of Covid world. However, we are very conscious of how busy the car park gets so a GREAT BIG PLEASE - try and park sensibly and with care to avoid congestion and potential accidents.

It has been a challenging year in many ways but in other ways extremely rewarding especially seeing all the hard work that has gone into the reopening of the Centre and the ongoing maintenance of the Reserve itself making progress. During October we dealt with 4 incidents; a kite surfer in difficulty, people trying to cross the Ogmore River on a flood tide, a surfer in difficulty and concerns over a kayak in trouble. In September we were joined by David, Mario, Gayle, Mike and Becky, our new trainee watchkeepers who commenced their training with us. We wish them well. We continue to promote our third musical evening on March 3rd, 2022 at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl and tickets are still available for this event. Every year we look to create something new and exciting. This year’s event features the Pendyrus Male Choir, the Parc and Dare band and guest soloist, Lauren Williams from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. We are looking for key sponsors who can support this event and in exchange, we can offer advertising space in our programme and complimentary tickets to the event. We are also receptive to other marketing ideas from sponsors such as banners, advertising space on tickets and posters. The members of Cor Tabernacl, Bridgend are looking forward to performing once more after an interval of almost two years. On Sunday, December 5th at 7pm the choir will perform a short concert of Christmas music to a limited audience. Entry will be by ticket only, available from choir members. TRINITY CHURCH At the time of writing we are looking forward to the Advent and Christmas season. Last year lockdown prevented us celebrating Christmas together so we expect this year to be even more special. We are collecting donations towards the Christmas Child appeal and also gifts for mothers in local refuges. Our Trinity Music Group has restarted and there is talk of a proposed concert, possibly during one of our morning services. Singing in church has also returned with gusto but we are still wearing masks. We continue to send out audio services and our morning service on Sundays at 10.30 is also available on zoom. Please contact our minister if you wish to receive a zoom link. We will not be holding a Christmas Bazaar but we have many toys, gifts and clothes at our Trinity Bargain store. Please come to browse. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Here we are once more meeting the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill. The weeks are rushing by with Christmas in everyone’s mind. We had a good turnout of members with a new lady coming with a mind to joining, all are welcome we’ve plenty of tea and biscuits. WI business discussed there are plenty to keep us on our toes. We attended the quiz night in the Hi Tide in October it was a fun evening and enjoyed by our members. (We didn’t win) Our walking club had a great walk in Cwmavon in November the scenery was breathtaking. scrabble club is ongoing and our lunch club had a good turnout and all enjoyed the meal. Our 70th anniversary meal sorted for November and our Christmas tea party is arranged for December with Enid who is once again entertaining us with her pass the parcel. We had an interesting talk from Mr Nick Jenkins with slides he taken on his walks. Next month we have a talk from Marilyn McNeil her topic pennies for friendship, it will explain to our members where their pennies they put down on our competition table go. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD We are well established now at our new home, the Grove Golf Club welcoming old members and inviting new members to try us out! Our programme is now settled until at least a year ahead, lots of old friends coming back to speak to us. Our Swansea Federation is also planning ahead for a Carol Service on December 4th and another Garden Party. We very much enjoyed the one in Margam Park in 2019. We shall be taking part again in the Christmas Tree celebration at All Saints Church. Our speaker in October was Dean Powell who gave a most interesting talk on the life of Glyn Houston illustrated with films. We welcomed three visitors to last months meeting. Debra John gave us her fascinating version of a Welsh Fairy Tale - always a popular speaker. This month our meeting will be our Christmas lunch again at the Grove Golf Club on December 15th. The constellation of Orion is well known. Its seven principal stars make up the recognisable outline of a man and the three stars of his belt have fascinated observers for millennia. However, lying to the south of this belt of stars is one of the most famous objects in the heavens, the great Orion Nebula, otherwise known by its designation Messier 42. The Orion nebula is an enormous cloud of gas and dust over 26 light years across, around 1350 light years away. It is easily visible to the naked eye, is a magnificent sight in a pair of binoculars and even more remarkable in a telescope. The spangled field of light is home to a nursery of newborn stars! December is one of the best months to spot the great constellation that is Orion! Society News Our December meeting will be a family friendly festive affair! THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL Christmas is nearly here and we are busy making preparations for our activities. Our December meeting is on Tuesday the 7th at the earlier time of 6pm. This is so we can have our meeting before our meal, as we have a visit from our District Chairman Maria Williams who is joining us for a Christmas Dinner. While in Porthcawl DC Maria will be going to see one of our ladies who are being made an Honorary Member in recognition of many years as a dedicated part of Inner Wheel. Some of our members are keen Knitters and were able to contribute to the 46 hats that were given to the Chaplain of the Seamen’s Mission in Port Talbot. The sailors come from all over the world and are very happy to choose a new hat. We have a lot to look forward to before Christmas including the District meeting and the Christmas tree festival. Our members are delighted to be meeting again after a long lay off. This month was our 3rd meeting and we were treated to a very entertaining and fascinating talk from Gayney Jones. Her wonderful quilts were so beautiful and inspiring. Next month is our Christmas meeting with festive food and music accompanied by a ukulele player. We are a small W I and would love to welcome new members. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month in All Saints church hall at 2pm. Prospective members can visit 2 meetings without a charge. Bridgend Soroptimists enjoyed a Festive Christmas Dinner on 10th November at the Heronston Hotel, Bridgend complete with Paper hats and crackers, not to mention much laughter from cracker jokes and charades.. New Member Lesley Dunlop shared with the club her story as a photographic magazine editor and the many books she has written on her journey and experiences during her varied career with the American Embassy. We hope she will enjoy the friendship, fun and service shared with members. For Christmas the club has donated “Pamper Bags” to Llamau (Womens Aid) to distribute to the victims of domestic abuse who will be in the Refuge over the festive season. In addition 30 selection boxes were donated for the children who will be in residence. Shoeboxes of goodies have been given to the Samaritans Purse charity for children in less affluent areas of the World. On 4th December members will be enjoying a Christmas Fundraiser Tea at the home of Past President Sharon Dixon. Proceeds will be donated to Llamau and SUTDA (Stand Up To Domestic Abuse). 8th December will be a ZOOM meeting to mark SIGBI INTERNATIONAL NIGHT. Members have been busy researching and will be relating the traditional Christmas customs from by-gone eras in all four nations of the United Kingdom, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. LALESTON WI Our W.I. met on Wednesday 3rd November at 2pm. Members were informed of a forthcoming trip being organised by Pen-yFai W.I. to Labels Ross-on-Wye and then lunch at Ross-on-Wye Golf Club, which we had been invited to join. Barbara Rees manned a Bring and Buy Stall, which raised £85, we also had old Scrap Books for members to look at so members could get a view of how our W.I. performed in years gone by. On Thursday November 25th we are having a lunch as a welcome back to our W.I. after Covid this will be our Christmas meeting. There will be no meeting in December. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 5th January at 2pm at The Blandy Hall, Laleston. Prospective new members are welcome to join us. More information from Diane Marshall 01656 656600.
NEWTON WI Although depleted in number due to illness, we all enjoyed the November meeting, which comprised of ‘Cheese Tasting’ supplied by the Blaenavon Cheese Company, who also gave a very interesting and informative talk on their business. Pat gave an appropriate reading for Armistice Day about the ‘Unknown Warrior’ which was quite moving, and our President Jennifer laid a wreath on behalf of Newton WI, at the Cenotaph. We had a very successful Christmas Fayre on November 12th. despite the bad weather. Thanks to all who supported us and our members that worked so hard. Plans are now going ahead for the Carol Singing and Christmas Party on December 1st, which we are all looking forward to. M Freeman
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES In the English language we only have one word for love. Therefore, we can say “I love my spouse”, and in the next breathe say, “I love chocolate”. In the Greek language however they have four different words for love depending on what is being referred to. The words are 1. Storge, which means affection - maybe the sort between family members. 2. Philio, which means something like fondness that can exist between friends. 3. Eros, which is to do with romance. 4. Agape, which means unconditional love. Parents would certainly understand this kind of love toward their children. Agape is the word used in the bible when talking about God’s kind of love. God’s love is unconditional. It is always others centeredness and selfsacrificial. In fact the bible says that God is love (1 John 4 v 8). God loves because he is love. His love reaches out to you whether you know it or not. My encouragement to all this month is to get to know God and this kind of love. It’s this kind of love that could answer the problems we see in the world today. What would the world be like if everyone loved like God? Neil Harvey

HISTORY MEET MY ANCESTORS Through my gateway ancestor Barbara Aubrey (1637 – 1711) I’ve traced the Stradling branch of my family tree back to Sir John d’Estratlinges, born c1240 in Strättligen, Kingdom of Arles, Switzerland. He married a niece of Otho de Grandson and they produced a son, my direct ancestor Peter de Stratelinges. Strättligen consisted of villages in the possession of the von Strättligen noble family, named after their home castle of Strättligburg. My ancestors ruled over much of western Bernese Oberland. Strättligburg was destroyed by the Bernese in 1332 and later generations of the Strättligens lost most of their possessions. Sir Peter de Stratelinges was born c1260 in Strättligen. He travelled to England with his father and in c1290 married Joan de Hawey, heiress of her brother, Thomas de Hawey. Their marriage produced two children: John Stradling and my direct ancestor Edward Stradling. Sir Peter was governor of Neath Castle and owned St. Donat’s Manor. The family intermarried with the noble families of Glamorgan and provided sheriffs and MPs. They became constables of local castles and throughout the late Middle Ages were prominent members of Glamorgan society. In the inaugural meeting of the Porthcawl Urban District Council, in December 1894, it was decided to pump water from Y Ffynon Fawr to Porthcawl. This situation lasted for 8 years until water came from Craig-yr-Aber, near Margam, (see photo) and later from a service reservoir at Ty-Coch. The reservoir at Ty Coch when it was built included a Filter House which acted not only as a filter for impurities but also as a storage facility to provide for flows of water during demand periods at Porthcawl. Also, the elevated Braithwaite water tank at “RAF Stormy Down” (now demolished) had its supply pumped from Ty-Coch In 1955, the Ty Coch reservoir was connected to the Schwyll in Ogmore by Sea. cost £90,000 was capable of a maximum delivery of 1,500,000 gallons a day. By the 1980’s the MidGlamorgan Water Board instigated the water supply to all Porthcawl houses from Llyn Brianne, a man-made reservoir 6 miles upstream from Rhandirmwyn, just above Twm Sion Catti’s Cave. As Llyn Brianne was filtered close to source, and from a purer supply, there was no need for the Filter House or the reservoir at Ty-Coch, which was roofed over, sometime in the late 1970’s. STUCHBERY’S – DRAPERS & MILLINERS The shop, at 34 Caroline Street, was opened in 1871 by a young woman called Constance Stuchbery. Born in 1847, her parents moved to Bridgend when she was a child where her father was an Inland Revenue officer. As a young girl she was a draper’s assistant in Benjamin Phillips’ Dunraven Place shop but in the early 1870s opened her own shop in Caroline Street. Her premises, at number 34, were called Emlyn House. Until around 1912, when she moved to Merthyr Mawr Road, she lived next door to the shop together with her two sisters and a few staff. She retired through ill health in 1927, handing the business over to her nephews. She died, unmarried, in 1939 at the age of 92. The business, which closed in 1972,h was a traditional drapers, and haberdashers, featured an American Lamson system, known as a cash railway. On making a purchase, the customer’s money was put into a container and clattered along wires to a central cash desk, with the change and receipt returning to the salesperson the same way. I found this fascinating and I cannot have been the only child to have urged my mother to buy something simply to see it working again. Ian Price Bridgend & District Local History Society

Dear Editor, At Porthcawl Museum recently, the museum chairman Mr Paul Joseph welcomed members of Porthcawl Lions for the formal opening of the museums latest attraction - The Victorian Tool Shed. The Lions presented this shed to the Museum back in 2019,but due to the Covid pandemic they were unable to furnish and complete it until recently. Under the guidance and expertise of Alun Jones, with his trusty work force, including Ann Taylor, Robert Taylor, Nigel John, Viv Thomas and Richard Newman, they have produced an excellent display. Also support John Hanson and his team from Tools for SelfReliance who have provided the museum with a large number of vintage tools, many of these tools are quite unusual and will be of interest to the museums visitors. Other museum members have also contributed to the exhibition including Joyce Whiting who gave a collection of her father’s tools, member Chris New, added some interesting period gardening tools. While Tony Clarke, signwriter, created the Y Shed/Shed sign for the shed. Paul thanked the Porthcawl Lions for providing the funds to purchase the shed and asked Mrs. Carole Roberts to formally cut the ribbon and declare the Victorian tool shed open. THE FIGURES ARE OUT – FEELING DEFLATED? Or would that be inflated? At the time of writing this, we have just seen the figures on inflation, at 4.2%, a whopping increase to say the least and the highest for ten years. Little surprise though when the price of fuel has now reached around £1.50 a litre for the car, the cost of a typical shop is estimated to be around £8 a week more, plus a plethora of other items, all of which feed into the equation. Last month I mentioned the rise in mortgage rates and yes, interest rates have been steadily been edged upwards by lenders, yet the Bank of England held the base rate for another month at the current level. That may not be the same next month or after Christmas, so anyone with a mortgage or later life / equity release loan that could be reviewed now, should be. It costs nothing to find out and our phone here is very busy with people wanting to renew the mortgage with a fresh deal whilst the rise in rates is still yet to really gather speed, and that goes for the retired sector too, where some people are managing to slash their interest payments from the fixed rates that they took out some years ago. We have just managed to rearrange the rate for a couple in Porthcawl who were paying an eye-watering 7.79% rate, fixed for life and they now have a new arrangement at 3.22% fixed for life. Remember you may have to pay some kind of early repayment penalty to change lender, however, the massively lower interest rate should be of real benefit going forward, especially as people are living longer. We are computer-linked with all the lenders in the market and our sourcing systems will help determine the best course of action for you – you pay nothing to ask the questions and to find out the viability of changing schemes. For those of you with some years to retirement yet, if your fixed rate is coming to an end within the next three months, now is the time you should be looking to re-fix your mortgage borrowing, ahead of rates rising further. COHABITATION AND COMMON LAW MARRIAGE Many couples believe that moving in together creates a common law marriage, giving you the same rights as if you were married. It does not the concept of common law marriage has no legal validity in the UK. In reality, moving in together does not give you automatic rights to each other’s property, no matter how long you live together. Conversely, however, if a cohabiting couple separates and there are children involved, both cohabiting partners may have rights and responsibilities. Problems can occur, particularly when one of you moves into a property the other owns or rents. The property owner is the only one entitled to live there, anyone else can be asked to leave. Cohabiting couples have no legal duty to support each other financially, either while you are living together or if you separate. Nor do you automatically share ownership of your possessions, savings, investments and so on. Cohabiting partners have no automatic right to inherit if their partner dies, although they may be a beneficiary under the other’s will. If you are a beneficiary, any assets you receive may be subject to inheritance tax - there is no exemption for unmarried couples.
It is that time of year again when Christmas planning is underway, but if separated parents cannot agree on shared contact arrangements for their children, what should be a joyous and child-focused time often becomes stressful. If this is an issue, your options are to speak to a Solicitor, attend mediation, or if all else fails, make an application to the Court for an order to be made. However, the Court will not view resolving Christmas arrangements as an urgent issue, so it is important to plan ahead and not leave things until the last minute. Assuming there are no welfare concerns, the Court will normally take the view that it is in the children’s best interests to see both of their parents over the festive period. The Court will strive to order arrangements that are fair to both parents so it is highly unlikely the children will remain with one parent for the whole Christmas period. If you have very young children, thought may need to be given to whether they should wake up where they normally call ‘home’ as this is where children believe Father Christmas will visit. When children are older, a Court will often suggest that arrangements are alternated each year. This could be splitting Christmas Day in half and alternating each year who has the children for Christmas lunch. Or it could be that the children spend Christmas Day with one parent and Boxing Day with the other, and the following year the arrangements are swapped. Ideally, Christmas arrangements should be agreed upon early after separation or divorce. This makes planning much easier and everyone involved knows where they stand. Christmas is an extremely busy time so it is beneficial to all, especially the children, to have clear arrangements in place earlier on in the year. MADELINE RAND King Davies & Partners
If you have lived together ‘as man and wife’ for at least two years or if you can show that you were financially dependent on your partner, you can make a claim for a financial settlement even if you were not a beneficiary of the will. However, making a claim can involve a complex and expensive dispute with the other beneficiaries. If you owned your home together, the form of legal ownership has a major impact. If you owned your home as ‘joint tenants’, you will automatically continue to own the (entire) home if your partner dies. But if you were ‘tenants in common’, your partner’s share is dealt with under the terms of his or her will. Written agreements can help to protect you from potential risks if you separate or your partner dies.

ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Well, it’s my favourite time of the year again. By the time you read this, my tree would have been up a month. Xmas always reminds me of my late granddad. We called him “Spider Man” not because he was a hero but because he couldn’t get out of the bath by himself. Well that’s the joke done, now the music news. I gave you exclusive news a few months ago about a huge festival to be held on our doorstep next year. The “In It Together Festival”, which has a 40,000 capacity, will be held on 3rd-5th June 2022 at Newlands Farm, Margam. Some top chart-topping names have been announced, including Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Tinie Tempah, Scouting For Girls, The Hoosiers, Soul 2 Soul, The Vaccines, Gabrielle and more names to be added. The family-friendly event also has stages for circus, comedy and alternative styles of entertainment, plus a camping site. Get your tickets now! A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
I have been fortunate to have a volunteer assistant helping for the last year or so on my Llandow Air Disaster film; Louise Jones, a highly competent stills photographer herself, has been keeping a behind-the-scenes photographic record of the production as well as assisting with carrying the movie camera gear and being involved in scene composition. On a documentary film, it is often necessary to work quickly to keep up with the action and traditional movie cameras, which shoot film rather than digital, are by nature slow to set up and require a light meter to obtain the correct lens aperture. A measuring tape is frequently used to set or check focus. Nothing on an Arriflex 35 2B is automatic. When we shot some scenes in Pontardawe recently – two of the 54 | seaside news
disaster’s victims came from the town, and I am doing a roundup of places affected – I thought it was time to give Louise a chance to operate the camera, so I showed her how the light meter worked and we spent a few minutes debating how the shots should be composed, then she took her place behind the viewfinder to run the shots. PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR Mair Jones, our Musical Director, has recently retired after 32 years dedicated service to the choir. A farewell evening was held at the High Tide to thank Mair for all her hard work over the years. We are pleased to announce that Alec Brooks will replace Mair as our new MD. Alec is well known to the choir and stood in for Mair on numerous occasions. Liz Cree has also joined us as an accompanist. We are very excited to publicly perform for the first time since the pandemic, at a wedding in November. This is first of many performances planned between now and Christmas and includes a number of our favourites including the RNLI Carol Service and the Stroke Club Christmas Dinner. We have also been invited by the Town Council to sing at the bandstand on the late-night shopping evening on the 25th November. Come along and see us. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Dennis Lines Memorial Competition, judged this year by Ralph Snook from Bristol. It was another very close competition with some excellent entries. We had 5 20s awarded on the night, all worthy of winning the competition, so the judge had to decide the overall winning entry and he narrowly chose “Jay in the rain” by Geoffrey Baker We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels. It’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR Our meetings are held within the social distancing rules and guidelines. Here we are in December, preparing for the fast approaching Christmas season. There are still some things to be done in the garden to prepare for those cold January days. Make sure pots are raised to prevent frost damage; outside taps should be isolated from the mains and lagged. Remember to fill bird feeders, put out fat balls to sustain our feathered friends. Make sure Brussels sprouts are secured to prevent wind damage. Deciduous shrubs and trees can still be planted and make sure your roses are pruned back to prevent winds from uprooting them. I will be out shortly with my secateurs raiding my shrubs for greenery to bedeck my Christmas arrangements, a little bit of my garden inside to cheer the festive season. We at the Garden Club would like to thank all those who supported our Christmas Fayre it is very much appreciated. The much needed funds will enable us to install our new windows and as soon as we are able open up to more activities we will announce our New Year program of events. We would like to wish all of our Members and supporters our very best wishes for a Happy & Healthy Christmas and a green and prosperous New Year! Susan Ford
December can be quiet month in the garden but there are still things to be done! With limited daylight hours as we approach the shortest day of the year we must make the best of them. The wintery weather can be strikingly beautiful and bitterly cold in equal measures! A nice bit of gardening will keep you warm! Get pruning, roses, wisteria and Japanese maples will all benefit from a good winter prune. Hang your bird feeder next to your roses; to attract hungry birds our lovely feathered friends will soon see off any over wintering pests! Dig a trench ready for next years beans, fill it with compostable kitchen waste (not cooked food) then cover with soil, this will rot down and dramatically improve growing conditions lots of fab beans to look forward to! If by chance we have a mild winter, I’m very sorry but you will have to keep cutting the lawn, on high blades of course (the only good reason to hope for a harsh winter) December’s flower is the Narcissus; this represents good wishes, hope and wealth, lovely! Don’t worry about the size of your Christmas tree; in the eyes of children they are all 30ft tall! Chris Early
PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY At the time of writing we are looking forward to our Practice night mid November when we will be learning to make Christmas wreaths and swags. This was held in Arlington road church at 7.30pm and this is the location and time for all future Practice nights and demonstrations. We were delighted with our Open Evening earlier this month where we enjoyed a beautiful display of festive floral arrangements by Elizabeth Gordon the current chairman of our NAFAS Area. Lucky raffle winners were able to take home the displays and the more adventurous can make their own versions at home. Since we started back after Covid we have been overwhelmed by local interest and are delighted to have 23 new members join us. In December we have our Christmas meal in the Grove Golf Club, preceded by a short AGM. Our next meeting is an afternoon tea also at the Grove • Grass Cutting on 26th January. Bridgend’s Brass Band Bus
Bridgend’s Brass Band Bus Bridgend Town Council will bring traditional Christmas cheer to residents in the wards of Morfa, Newcastle, and Oldcastle this Christmas. The RAF St. Athan Voluntary Band will visit the wards to play carols and Christmas music from an open top double decker bus. There will also be a very special visitor aboard the bus - Santa!!
