from the editor I sat down to write this letter with the intention of telling you about a new owner of the design center and our plans for moving forward—but at the time we went to press, the building was still for sale. Prospective owners have been touring the property—we’ve met with some and all have expressed interest in keeping the design center aspect. There may be new uses or occupancies for portions of the campus, but I think we’ll see a welcome infusion of energy. Whether physical updates to the exterior of the building, improvements to common areas and furnishings, or new tenants to deepen the pool, we’re going to experience a revitalized design center. And progress like this is indeed good. Speaking of progress and vitalization, we’ve had a rich opportunity for collaboration through local nonprofit Coyote Central. A team of eight middle school students, under the guidance of master welder and artist Rusty Oliver, designed and fabricated a bike rack slash sculpture to be installed under the skybridge. This is part of a neighborhood benefit package Hines implemented—see more about the organization and the project on page 6. Significant change always seems to encourage, perhaps even require, a review of priorities, and we’ve spent time exploring our through line. This cycle of review has cast fresh light on our role in an ever changing, expanding marketplace, and I’m excited about the exploration ahead. There will be tests and there will be slips, as there always are with change, but we remain committed to supporting the design trade. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities for collaboration this fall, as well as new initiatives we’re planning for our social media platforms and website. I see this as a pivot point and I look forward to the next phase of SDC.

sdc momentum

Seattle Design Center needed a partner for a project to add functional sculpture to the design center campus—essentially a bike rack that does the double duty of encouraging biking while also supporting the neighborhood’s unique fusion of design and art. Enter Coyote Central. Coyote challenges young adolescents to build competence and creativity through hands-on workshops with professionals in creative fields. And we definitely saw that in action—a team of eight middle school students, working with master welder and artist Rusty Oliver, took the initial concept, suggested poses, decided as a group which one best served as a bike rack, and then fabricated the piece as a team—ultimately 21 feet in length. All in five days! The finished piece will be installed under the skybridge in the next two months.

This transitional brocaded pattern features an extremely luxurious combination of colors, materials and textures. The background is a deep charcoal in all Tibetan boucle (uncut) wool. Design elements feature Chinese silk in raised pile to give the piece a three-dimensional look and feel in tones of pewter grey, midnight blue and silver. The look of this piece in person is extraordinary.

The Auguste Chair by Jacques Garcia is inspired by 1920s Bauhaus design and features a supple leather back and seat and forged iron frame that comes standard in Garcia’s fonderie finish. It offers a generous sling seat, yet has a modest footprint that can work in any modern setting. The Auguste Chair is offered in three Baker leathers: porcini, morel or black truffle.

3 | V I CO U S T I C Omega Wood is another Vicoustic 2-in-1 (absorption and diffusion) product. The smooth curved surface acts as a diffuser, while the foam interior (intentionally separated from the perforated wood surface) offers an extraordinary absorption effect on mid frequencies. Omega Wood is an excellent solution for particularly demanding acoustic requirements, offering both diffusion and an excellent absorption rate/m2, combined with a unique, attractive design.

The Metropolitan collection from Stickley strikes a wonderful balance of modern lines with a sensitivity for excellent, timeless design. Honey-toned woods emerge as a reaction to the dark wenge and other woods we’ve been seeing in furniture for so long. A natural finish allows woods, such as cherry and walnut, a fresher look than ever as shown here in the 718 Morris Plains finish. The graceful lines, refined finishes, and heirloom quality are signature Stickley.

14 1 4 | D I XO N G RO U P The weathered textures and natural patinas that objects develop after years of exposure to the elements served as the inspiration to Hartmann & Forbes’ new designs. Highlighting the update is the aged Barnwood finish for woodblinds. Inspired by the aged texture and deep patinas of reclaimed Oregon barn wood, American artisans hand-distress the natural grains of linden wood to replicate the appearance that otherwise takes decades to occur. The resulting three finishes offer a rustic impression designed to add texture and comfort to any modern interior space.

The Discovery Collection offers durable, designer solutions for residential, hospitality and commercial projects, including two new, solution-dyed upholsteries for Brentano’s line of outdoor fabrics. The bold, vertical stripes of Parterre, like the regimented European gardens inspiring the name, give a formal structure to the traditional twill weave, yet play with color and scale. Lightfast, antibacterial and bleach cleanable, 100 percent polyester Parterre and its 100 percent polyolefin companion Element, a subtle texture, both exceed 70,000 double rubs (Wyzenbeek) for true beauty and performance.
