Letter to the Community

DEAR FRIENDS OF SEATTLE ACADEMY, The 2019–2020 school year has come and gone, and what an extraordinary year it was. We began in September with great enthusiasm as we launched the school year with our new Mission Statement and Guiding Principles and ended in June teaching students remotely – challenging them and ourselves to question, imagine, create, and contribute boldly to this changing world that none of us could have anticipated. Still, our community came together in extraordinary ways to provide an exceptional program for our students during this unprecedented time. Thanks to the continued generosity of our community, SAAS students enjoyed an innovative learning experience guided by talented faculty who are dedicated to their success. Whether intrigued by literature, the sciences, drama, athletics, or service learning, the full breadth of the SAAS program was possible thanks to donors like you. The Annual Fund and SAAS in the City combined raised over $2.4 million—far exceeding our goal! Your commitment to our school is deeply appreciated and will be critical in the challenging years ahead. As we navigate these difficult times, I hope you and your family are finding ways to stay connected and hopeful. We are all experiencing dramatic change, but the SAAS community is standing together to support each other, every step of the way. With Gratitude,

Rob Phillips, Head of School

David Sheppard, Board Chair

Our Mission Seattle Academy began the 2019-2020 year with a new mission statement and while the words are fresh, the meaning is rooted in the values and commitment held since the school was founded in 1983. For 36 years, SAAS has motivated students to think broadly, to embrace challenges, and to question, imagine, and create in order to contribute boldly to a changing world.

College and Life

Inclusive Community

SAAS prepares students for College and Life; we value curiosity and innovation, participation and excellence, and exploration and resolve.

We believe that an Inclusive Community embraces cultural agility, civic action, and a broad definition of human potential.

Culture of Performance

Know the Kid

Our Culture of Performance fosters the integration of skillsand knowledge, the ability to collaborate and take risks, and the capacity to confidently navigate change and ambiguity.

Our commitment to Know the Kid establishes the foundation for healthy relationships, and nurtures a mutual respect for each individual’s strengths, challenges, and unique story.

Our Values The most important factor in the success of Seattle Academy is the existence of supportive relationships between and among students and teachers and among faculty, administrators, and parents. These supportive relationships are the direct result of social interactions that are governed and guided by the SAAS core values. It is our aspiration that the Seattle Academy community shares these core values and demonstrates them in all communications and action. Annual Fund

$1.4 million raised through Annual Fund Kaywley Runstad Swan (Anders ’22, Savannah ’19, Leo ’18, and Kate ’16) Trustee & Development Chair

What an extraordinary year it’s been in terms of dollars raised to support Seattle Academy’s programs and community. Our 2019–2020 Annual Fund exceeded goal with nearly 1,000 gifts received totaling $1,412,660. Gifts came from SAAS families both past and present, from grandparents, alumni, trustees, faculty and staff, and friends. These gifts, from just $1 to thousands of dollars, collectively fund curricular innovations, resources, and opportunities across all pillars of a SAAS education—academics, the arts, athletics, outdoor and travel programs, and more. Gifts also support financial aid, technology, faculty professional development, and student initiated clubs and activities. Every gift makes a difference and is deeply appreciated. Thank you!

An incredible $1 million for Financial Aid Megan Bergerson (Max ‘23) Lynanne Struss (Lila ’26, Miles ’25, and Colson ’23) Event Co-Chairs

With over 650 registered guests, including current and alumni parents, faculty and staff, seven alumni and 170 Middle and Upper School student performers, this year’s Alaska-themed SAAS in the City delivered a beautiful night of celebration, community, and collective impact. Together, our community raised $1,034,944 for Financial Aid, which ensures access and inclusion for students regardless of socioeconomic background, while also enriching the learning and development for all students. Thank you to the donors listed here—we are grateful for this amazing outpouring of community support. In fact, thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we far exceeded our $700,000 goal which enabled SAAS to offer more Financial Aid grants to incoming students. The success of SAAS in the City is a direct result of the tremendous effort and countless hours of parent volunteers, student performers, and faculty and staff. Thank you all!
