About The Zeta Pi Lambda Chapter Under the leadership of B. E. Squires of Seattle, WA the Alpha Xi Chapter was organized and re-chartered at the University of Washington on December 31, 1939 (originally Marquette University, 1923) and began the Greek Letter movement among college-trained African American men in the Pacific Northwest. This single chapter contained both undergraduates and alumni from Oregon and Washington. In 1950 Epsilon Zeta Lambda alumni chapter in Portland, OR was chartered. Alpha’s presence in Washington continued to grow, prompting the formulation of a second chapter in Washington state. Zeta Pi Lambda chapter was founded on October 12, 1956 in Seattle, Washington. Zeta Pi Lambda has a proud history of implementing the National Programs of the Fraternity at the local level, providing service and advocacy to the Greater Seattle community, promoting leadership of Brothers in vital community institutions including numerous Public and Civic endeavors, and partnering with various community organizations

Bro. Salim Mayberry, President Brothers, It has been an honor to have served as President of Zeta Pi Lambda for the last 2 years. I am very proud of our accomplishments of my term as President and changing the face of Zeta Pi Lambda (ZPL) and Alpha Phi Alpha in the SeattleMetropolitan area for the better forever! In the 1st Fraternal year of my administration, known as the “New Era”, we were able to accomplish three main goals for the chapter: 1.) Strengthened of our Brotherhood, 2.) Increased participating in more impactful service in our local community, and 3.) Effectively used the resources of our Alpha network. In the 2nd year, known as “the Alpha Imprint”, we continued on this groundwork with three additional main goals: 1.) Become more community and politically active, 2.) Increase fundraising efforts, and 3.) Build a better social, service, and leadership network for Brothers. Here are a few key specific accomplishments of this two-year administration: Rebranded ZPL (alias Seattle Alphas) not only with a new logo, but also with a new look and excitement of having younger and new Brothers to the area join the chapter (Some of these Brothers even stepped into chapter leadership positions). Increased the chapter membership by 14 members. Tripled the chapter bank account. Re-established Club ALPHA Mentoring Program for middle and high school young men. Created a chapter database and the ZPL App which provided chapter members with beneficial chapterrelated information. Re-established our Chapter 501c3 status as the Seattle Alphas Education Foundation. Created the Alpha Imprint Semi-Annual Newsletter to highlight chapter-related happenings and accomplishments. Hosted our most successful Summer Phreeze Pool Party in which we raised the most scholarship money for local high school seniors and was our most attended pool party ever. Helped Alpha Xi chapter reestablish itself at the University of Washington with assistance of the Iota Mu Lambda chapter (Tacoma, WA).

Created and organized the career fair with locally-based employers at the 71st Western Regional to provide networking and career opportunities to local community members (particularly Black community members) as well as Brothers of the Western Region. Continued our hosting of the “Your Vote, Your Voice” Community Forum to provide information particularly for the Black community, not only on local initiatives and candidates running for office, but with community leaders panels discussing important topics such as education, public safety and affordability.

Established the Libations and Liberation Election Night Watch Party with the Culture Shock Curators (a happy hour series for young black professionals in Seattle) to reiterate the importance of midterm elections where mostly black young professionals attended. In addition to the list of accomplishments, we joined and are still involved with the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle as a part of the Black Caucus for the 2020 Census in order to develop strategies to empower our community and make sure we are counted in this year’s Census. One of accomplishments I’m most proud of is with our Club ALPHA Mentoring Program, where this year we were able to award and recognize two young men who consistently participated in the program. It was a joy to watch these two young men grow within our program and know that they gained a lot of valuable knowledge as both of these mentees have stated; they are excited to continue participating in the program next year. A special shout-out to Bro. John Nelson and Bro. Bobby Alexander for their leadership as Club ALPHA co-chairs in making this mentoring program a success. Furthermore, a thank you to all the Brothers who were able to participate and provide lively insight to these young men and show what Alpha is truly about. In many ways, this has been a trying year especially with the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, directly and indirectly affecting us and the rest of the world. Again, a thank you to the Brothers who serve as essential workers and to the Brothers who are doing their part in keeping themselves and others safe as well as preventing the spread of the virus. While we couldn’t do what we as a chapter hoped to do for the rest of this Fraternal year, the Executive Board with other Brothers from the chapter were able to create a COVID-19 taskforce to create a plan with chapter initiatives as a way for ZPL to operate during these times. Some of those initiatives include the Jewel Scholarship Fundraising Campaign, Local Black Restaurant Series, and Local Brother Essential Worker Spotlight. This time period once more shined a spotlight on police brutality and oppression that Black people in this country face. It

was shown through the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Riah Milton, Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells, Ahmaud Arbery, and Oluwatoyin Salau, to name a few. It also highlighted police brutality and oppression that Black people face locally as well with the deaths of Manuel Ellis and Sean Fuhr. Shout-outs to the Brothers who attended the protests all over the area to let their voices be heard in demanding change on these continuing issues! While street protesting is a powerful tool, it is just one step. We should continue this fight in strategic ways especially while working collectively as Alpha men, as we are stronger together. My hope is to have ZPL being more involved in this fight by not only voting, but also in strategizing, leading, and helping to create and promote local policies and initiatives that combat some of the issues facing us, especially on the grassroots level. We should do more than just “show up” and be more proactive for the long haul (Emotion is not strategy). The conversation has already begun between the outgoing and incoming administration. I hope this time period has ignited a fire in the fight against racism and oppression because we certainly have an even stronger Brotherhood and chapter now to make this happen. I believe this period can be looked at as that positive light and that perfect storm for a better future. In closing, I want to thank my Executive Board for the amazing job they have done over the last 2 years. I send my highest appreciation to Bro. Daron Hill, Bro. Clark LaPrelle, Bro. Stacy Robinson, Bro. Duane Hill Sr., Bro. Charlie Walker III, Bro. Ken Poston, Bro. Bill Jones, Bro. Donne Young, Bro. Aaron Ruffin, and Bro. Rodney Moseley. Of course, I would like to thank the Brotherhood for all of the support of this administration, because, although cliché, the chapter certainly could not have done these amazing things without you. As I am sure all of the chapter leadership can relate to the same mindset, serving was not about me individually, but always about enhancing ZPL and providing a stronger chapter and Brotherhood that all Brothers could be proud of, which I hope was well felt. I am very thrilled and eager to see how Bro. Thomas Brown as the incoming President and his administration will take ZPL to an even higher level in the next years! Fraternally, Bro. Salim A. Mayberry Outgoing President, Zeta Pi Lambda Chapter

Congratulations to the newly elected 2020 - 2021 ZPL Chapter Officers! It is great to see Brothers, especially newer Brothers to the chapter, step up into these roles! I am more than certain all of you will move the chapter to a greater level. The newly elected ZPL officers that will be installed at the September meeting are as follows: President: Bro. Thomas Brown Vice President: Bro. Rodney Moseley Treasurer: Daytheon Sturges Corresponding Secretary: Bro. Jay Cunningham Recording Secretary: Bro. Aaron Ruffin Financial Secretary: Bro. James Peterkin II Chaplain: Bro. Ken Poston Historian: Bro. Clark LaPrelle Intake Coordinator: Bro. Daron Hill Director of Educational Activities: Bro. John German Associate Editor of the Sphinx: Charles Walker III Sergeant at Arms: Bro. Duane Hill, Sr. Parliamentarian: Bro. Donne Young Thank you to the Brothers that voted in this election and had their "voices heard" in the shaping of Zeta Pi Lambda. Approximately, ~60% of the chapter voted this election season. I know that next election season, we can reach 100% of the chapter voting and align ourselves with our national program of "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People". The message of "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People" should not only be applied outside of the Fraternity, but also within. Again, congratulations to the new elected officers for the 2020-2021. To a stronger and growing Zeta Pi Lambda, 06! Fraternally, Bro. Salim Mayberry President, Zeta Pi Lambda Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Club A.L.P.H.A.

This fraternal year the chapter wanted to focus on aiding in the intellectual develop of young men of color by mentoring to them. Our Club A.L. P.H.A. mentoring program commenced on Saturday September 14th at the Van Asselt Community, located at 2820 S. Myrtle Street in Seattle. Our vision and mission for the program is to arm young men of color with more information for decision making and problem solving along their journey to adulthood. To help sharpen their leadership skills and enhance their personal understanding of situations that will affect life. Our target audience was young men in middle and high school in Seattle and we met with them for two hours on the second Saturday of every month. For those of you who have teenagers or who have had teenagers, you know that getting them to give up a couple of hours on a Saturday is not an easy task and getting them to speak their minds and share their feeling is not so easy either. So to address these two barriers, we used a participative style of learning rather than lecturing to them and we encouraged parents not to attend sessions so the mentees felt more comfortable speaking about what they were thinking at the moment. One of major initial decisions the chapter had to make prior to starting the program was how many mentees did we want to have and of concern was the ratio of mentees to brothers that would regularly attend. We ended up with good goal of 10 to 12 mentees and even though brotherhood participation was a little sketchy in the beginning, as the program progressed, the number of brothers attending sessions increased greatly. The Pandemic did affect our program and we had to cancel our March and April sessions but in true Alpha form, we did manage to meet on Saturday May 23rd (wearing masks and gloves) and show our appreciation to the Mentees for participating in our program. A certificate of appreciation was presented along with a Amazon gift card. Brothers in attendance said a few words and when asked the question on how to improve the program, the only thing suggested by a Mentee was to meet twice a month rather than once a month. Thank you to all who participated and sometimes sponsored the refreshments and we’ll probably start the planning for the next year in July and August. 2019-2020 Chairs Bro. John Neslon Bro. Bobby Alexander

College Days Swiftly Pass

Greetings, My name is Brother D’andre Garcia-Stubbs, I am a spring 2018 initiate by way of the Alpha Xi Chapter seated at the University of Washington and I hail from Yakima, WA. I will be graduating with a BA in Education, Communities, and Organization (ECO) with a double minor in Diversity and Human Rights. This major emphasized the concept that learning happens across settings outside of your typical classroom. I was drawn to this major because it will help me develop a strong foundation on equity, human development, learning theory, and community-based research and organizational dynamics. For my post-baccalaureate plans, I have been accepted into Teach For America where I will be teaching 8th grade Math in Phoenix, AZ, and getting my masters in secondary education through Arizona State University (ASU). I would like to continue to develop the skills and gain the knowledge necessary to address issues such as educational diversity and inequity. Due to the strong mentorships from people of color and specifically men of color at the UW, it has fueled my drive to one day be that person for another student. Jackie Robinson once said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives”. I hope that through showing interest in the students I work with I can motivate and support students of color to pursue their dreams and ambitions. Repeatedly, I have been told by educators, peers, and community members that I would not make it. However, today I am in a position to be the voice for those who will and have experienced what I did. That in itself lights a fire beneath me to keep growing, learning, and striving to be boundless. Accomplishments: Del Rio Global Scholar Scholarship (2018) Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity Merit Scholar 2019) Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated Purpose Foundation scholarship (2019) Watch The Yard Leadership Highlight (2019) Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship (2020) Husky Leadership Certificate (2020)

Making An Imprint... Brotherhood Spotlight Bro. Bobby Alexander Zeta Pi Lambda Spr. 2015

The Brothers of Zeta Pi Lambda would like to congratulate Bro. Bobby Alexander on Passing the Bar Exam this past spring.

Career Goals : At this point my dream is to be the district attorney of a large metropolitan city, and then afterwards become a politician here in King County. In addition, I want to continue to be a leader in the MLK celebration planning, and coach track and field at one of the community centers. Dreams: I always wondered why there wasn’t a black version of the Kennedy Family in the United States, I want to start a legacy like that for my family. But at the same time, I grew up idolizing Batman, and I wanted to be a Bruce Wayne kind of figure in the Black Community, providing scholarships and housing to less fortunate children. I guess, I felt like I won the lottery with my parents, and I have always known others were not as lucky. Hobbies: Because I grew up in a home full of athletes, fitness has always been an expectation and a passion. My dad ran track in college, did some semi-professional fighting, and international power lifting. My mom played 3 years of multiple varsity sports in high school, and one of my older sisters set the triple jump record at Blanchett in the 90’s. All of this to say, any competition is fun to participate in or watch. Doesn’t matter if its sports or cooking. Additionally, I love film, in another reality I am an actor or screen writer. Whats happening next : Probably moving to the Midwest where I can live and buy a house on government wages. I am applying with numerous city attorney’s offices throughout the Midwest. I will be a prosecutor somewhere that is all I really know.
