Letter from CEO David Loewe Dear Animal Lovers,
Summer 2014 • Vol 22 • Issue 2
Every year at our Tuxes & Tails gala, I am humbled by how much our community is committed to helping pets in need.
Cover Photo: Barklee, a 5-month-old American Eskimo/Poodle mix, made his debut on the Tuxes & Tails runway.
On May 10 we hosted our 25th annual Tuxes & Tails and our generous donors raised $1.4 million for the animals in Seattle Humane Society’s care. Nearly 1,000 guests joined us for live and silent auctions, a four-course dinner, and the celebrity and adoptable pet runway show – all to benefit the animals. We were thrilled that all 28 cats and dogs on the runway at Tuxes & Tails were adopted into loving homes the next day! At every Tuxes & Tails we choose a special Fund-A-Need project and ask our attendees for their support. This year we asked our supporters to help us expand Seattle Humane’s Community Outreach Programs. These lifesaving programs provide critical pet food and vet services to thousands of pets belonging to low-income seniors, cancer patients and people disabled by HIV/AIDS. It is a project that personally touched so many hearts in the room and raised nearly $570,000. These funds will help pets in need and keep people and pets together. We thank you for making our work possible by supporting the animals at Tuxes & Tails, and all year long. We could not do it without you. Thank you for all you do!

Humane Happenings News & Updates Our New Life-Saving Wheels are in Motion!
Thanks to our generous supporters, Seattle Humane’s two new Life-Saver Rescue vehicles will help us transfer thousands of pets.
We are thrilled to announce that our new Life-Saver Rescue vehicles are on the road and saving lives! The vehicles will help us save and safely transport nearly 4,000 animals to Seattle Humane Society this year as part of our Life-Saver Rescue Program. Chelsey’s Rescue Rider and Hammy & Henry’s Hero Waggin’ were made possible with the support of hundreds of donors who contributed to the 2013 Tuxes & Tails Fund-A-Need. Decorated with bright colors and covered with dog and cat photos, the vehicles have been named after beloved pets belonging to our lead donors. “So many pets are facing the end simply because they were born or surrendered in communities lacking the resources to care for them,” said Seattle Humane CEO David Loewe. “It’s been our mission to partner with these communities and give these helpless animals a second chance. Now, thanks to the generous support of our donors who have funded these new vehicles, we can do just that.” Chelsey’s Rescue Rider can transport up to 70 pets at a time and will be used on longer rescue trips to Eastern Washington and Los Angeles; Hammy & Henry’s Rescue Waggin’ will be used locally and can transport up to 20 rescued pets at a time. The vehicles will conduct rescue missions several times a week. Each vehicle is climate-controlled and equipped with food, water, and medical supply storage to keep the pets happy and healthy during their journey to Seattle Humane. Thank you to all of our generous supporters who have set the wheels in motion to save the lives of thousands of pets in our community and beyond!
Volunteers and staff help bring pets in need to safety at Seattle Humane.
Our Life-Saver Program travels far and wide to rescue animals.

Pet Tips Keep your pet cool this summer Summer is here and we want to help you keep your pets safe as the temperatures soar. It’s tempting to bring your furry friend along for the ride, but you should never leave your pet in the car unattended in warm weather. Even in the Northwest, the interior of a car can hit 160 degrees in less than five minutes, and parking in the shade with the windows cracked can still be dangerous. Enjoy the sunny skies, but leave your best friend at home if you can’t take them in with you at every stop! While enjoying outdoor time with your dog this summer, try to walk him in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler for both of you. If you’re walking on asphalt or cement, stay mindful of your dog’s paw pads, as they’re more fragile on warmer surfaces. Be sure to bring along extra water, especially for those never-ending ball chasers! When at home, consider your pet’s housing. If she’s in the yard, make sure she has shade and fresh water access at all times. It’s a good idea to hose down your dog before work, at lunch or whenever you can to provide extra cooling. Better yet, keep her comfortable inside your home, at your office or at a doggie daycare. Remember that if your buddy has a shorter nose, like a Persian cat, a Pug or a Bulldog, he or she is more susceptible to heatstroke than breeds with longer noses.
Signs of Heat Stroke • • • • • • •
Body temperatures of 104-110°F Excessive panting Dark or bright red tongue and gums Staggering or stupor Seizures Bloody diarrhea Vomiting
If you suspect heat stroke in your pet, seek veterinary attention immediately! Use cool water, not ice water, to cool your pet. Very cold water will cause constriction of the blood vessels and impede cooling. Just because your animal appears cooled, do NOT assume everything is fine. Internal organs such as the liver, kidneys and brain are definitely affected by the body temperature elevation, and blood tests and veterinary examinations are needed to assess this. Animal Advocates A Tribute to Rosalie Lorber Revesz Rosalie Lorber Revesz dedicated her life to animal welfare as a long-time volunteer and donor to the Seattle Humane Society. A successful CPA, Rosalie was known for her love of animals. She cared for the stray cats in her neighborhood and was also the proud owner of two rescue dogs, Nikki, a small black Terrier, and Liza (pictured), a Shepherd adopted from Seattle Humane eight years ago. Liza was transferred to Seattle Humane from another shelter where she had run out of time, so Rosalie had a special place in her heart for our rescue efforts. She showed her support through our 2013 Tuxes & Tails Fund-A-Need project by making a donation to help Seattle Humane purchase two transfer vehicles for our Life-Saver Rescue Program. Rosalie taught her daughter Laura from a young age how to give back to the animals. Laura fondly recalls donating pet food and towels to Seattle Humane when she was 7 years old and Rosalie volunteered at the shelter every Sunday. “My mother knew that Seattle Humane didn’t receive government funding and that her donations would make a difference,” recalls Laura. “She also knew that animals change people’s lives.” Before Rosalie passed, she chose to make Seattle Humane Society a beneficiary of her estate through her IRA account to help even more pets in need of rescue. Rosalie’s legacy will now live on in our life-saving work, and thousands of orphaned animals will benefit from her generosity for years to come. Rosalie with her dog Liza, adopted from Seattle Humane.

Seattle Humane Society and nearly 1,000 animal lovers were all abuzz during our special 25th silver anniversary fundraising gala, Tuxes & Tails! This year’s gala on May 10 raised nearly $1.4 million for pets in need. The energy in the room was electric – from the silent auction, the first-class dinner and wine, to the well-anticipated live auction. Guests bid for the chance to win unique items, amazing VIP experiences and fabulous getaways. Always among the most coveted is the cover of Seattle Humane’s very own Power of Companionship calendar, which features the pet of the highest bidder. The 2015 calendar cover will showcase Cindy and Hans Koch’s dog, Champy the Chihuahua mix. Other popular items included a luxury game day suite to see Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks, and special trips to exotic destinations like Bali, Africa and many more – all to benefit the pets in our care. “We’re proud to host such a great event to benefit orphaned, abandoned and homeless pets in our community,” said CEO David Loewe, “but we couldn’t do it without our charitable sponsors, hundreds of supporters who procure and donate auction items, devoted staff and volunteers who made the evening a huge success, and the guests whose generosity exceeded all of our expectations.” The ballroom shined and sparkled as our guests came dressed to impress. Even more impressive was the incredible outpouring of support for this year’s Fund-A-Need project, which highlighted Seattle Humane Society’s Community Outreach Programs. Seattle Humane is widely known for providing life-saving services for pets. No less important are the life-saving services we provide for people who desperately need the comfort of their pets during times of financial crisis, disability and serious illness. This year’s Fund-A-Need raised nearly $570,000 in critical funds to provide pet food and veterinary services to thousands of pets belonging to low-income seniors, cancer patients, and people disabled by HIV/AIDS. We want to give special thanks to John and Rosalind Jacobi of the Jacobi Family Foundation for a lead gift of $50,000 and to Jim and Bet Schuler of the Schuler Family Foundation for their generous gift of $50,000. These donations will ensure that thousands of people in our community will not be forced to give up their pets when they need them most. For the event finale, we welcomed our fabulous shelter pets to the stage to strut their stuff with local celebrities in our unique runway show. Among the animal-loving celebrities were Seattle SuperSonics stars Slick Watts and Gus Williams, who each walked the runway with an adorable puppy in his arms. After the event, all 28 featured pets were adopted! On behalf of every dog, cat and critter who comes through our doors, thank you to everyone who made Tuxes & Tails such a special evening. The success of this event means that Seattle Humane can continue its life-saving work for pets in need and for the people who love them, too. 1. Happy Tails A Special Kitten Beats All Odds Ozzie’s story is one of compassion, strength and community. Ozzie’s mom, Sheba Louise, was surrendered to Seattle Humane while pregnant. Sheba Lousie’s family was unable to provide the care she needed and they wanted to give her, and her future kittens, the best chance at a new life. Thanks to our volunteer Foster Care Program, we were able to place Sheba Louise in a foster home where she gave birth to four kittens, including Ozzie. However, as Ozzie began to crawl and drag both back legs behind him, it became apparent that something was wrong; he had been born with a spine deformity. Sheba Louise took extra care of Ozzie, seeking him out for nursing and grooming, but it was clear that he would need more specialized help. Our veterinarian worked with Ozzie’s foster parents to develop a physical therapy plan to help this special kitten learn how to use his legs. As advised, his foster mom began tucking Ozzie’s back legs underneath his body, encouraging him to push off and strengthen his leg muscles. With over a month of dedication and perseverance, Ozzie began not only walking on his own, but even chasing his siblings just like any other kitten! At two months old, Ozzie’s siblings were all adopted, while he remained in foster care where we could monitor his development. Ozzie continued to show improvement, but just as Ozzie was ready for adoption, he fell suddenly ill with feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) – a virus that often proves fatal for kittens. At most shelters, testing positive for FPV would have been a death sentence, but because of the generous support from our community, we were able to give Ozzie yet another chance at life. With quick action from his foster mom and roundthe-clock care from Seattle Humane’s veterinary team, Ozzie made a miraculous recovery. After all they had been through, Ozzie’s foster mom decided she couldn’t possibly let him go and she decided to adopt him. Ozzie recently celebrated his first birthday with his new family. His mom shared that he can fetch a foil ball for up to 30 minutes without stopping, chases toys and climbs using his front legs. Despite all he’s been through, Ozzie remains an upbeat and incredibly affectionate kitty who doesn’t let his condition keep him from loving life and playing with his cat and dog siblings. Ozzie still has challenges, but thanks to support from generous donors like you, he faces each day with exuberance and his adoring adopter by his side.

Happy Tails Confidence for a Dog Named Lucy At Seattle Humane, we give every pet as much time as they need for us to find them a new home, and time was exactly what Lucy, a 10-year-old Spaniel mix, needed to conquer her fears. Lucy was surrendered to Seattle Humane when her family could not meet her behavioral needs. She was fearful of new situations, strangers and other dogs, making it difficult to keep her happy. Seattle Humane’s behavior team knew it would take time (and treats!) to boost Lucy’s confidence so they worked with her at our shelter, teaching Lucy that meeting new people and dogs was fun and rewarding. As Lucy improved, she stayed with volunteer foster families who continued to train and encourage her. After eight months of positive training and TLC, Lucy blossomed into a confident companion who welcomed affection. Lucy’s foster family had worked alongside her for so long, they decided she belonged with them and adopted her. Lucy’s new people, Lacey and Dan, couldn’t be happier with their sweet pup, who dances by the door each day before their walk, and then retires to a mountain of blankets when they return, happy in her new home.
The Adventures of Walden & Panda Newborn kittens are completely dependent on their mothers for food, warmth and protection. When Walden (pictured top) and Panda (pictured bottom) were brought to Seattle Humane, orphaned at only a few days old, our veterinary team was concerned about their future. Caring for newborn kittens requires resources that many shelters do not have. But thanks to our generous donors and our network of dedicated volunteer foster families, we’re able to give the most fragile pets like Walden and Panda a fighting chance at life. We placed the kittens in a loving volunteer foster home, where they received round-the-clock care. As each day went by, their ears and eyes opened, they welcomed their bottle feedings and began to gain weight. Their personalities also started to develop with Panda emerging as the calm, predictable one and Walden as her fussy but affectionate counterpart. Together they became stronger and more adorable each day. In two months, Walden and Panda were ready to be adopted by their own loving families. They made a special television appearance on our Pet-of-the-Week segment on Q13 FOX. As they pounced around on the morning news, viewers from home soaked up the cuteness and a line of potential adopters awaited them back at the shelter. Both were quickly adopted and these once orphaned kittens are now cherished family members. 9
Letters from Dear Seattle Humane Society,
My boyfriend and I adopted Fluffy (who we have since renamed Haskell, after the mathematician) from Seattle Humane last September and things couldn’t be better! Your amazing adoption counselors took us through the shelter and introduced us to a bunch of lovely, deserving dogs. It was so hard to decide who to bring home! But, at the end of the day, it was Fluffy who chose us. We were told that he could be extremely shy, especially around men, but as soon as he entered the room his face lit up and he ran over to both of us and gave us big licks. He’s been a super quick learner and thanks to the care he received from the shelter volunteers, along with the free training session we received with his adoption, he’s been making amazing strides. We couldn’t be more excited to continue working with him. We love this picture of him mastering sit for the first time! Thanks for providing this family with the best friend we could ask for.
-Billie Hello, We adopted a puppy right after the holidays and wanted to report back that we are completely in love with the newest addition to our family. Ryan (now Bailey) is the sweetest little guy imaginable and has been making things easy for us as first-time puppy raisers. He’s doubled in weight and is doing well with his lessons – potty training, puppy play, and basic commands. He has also bonded with us as much as we have with him – he’s a real snuggler who loves to curl up with us while we read or watch movies. When we take him for walks, he’s the ultimate puppy magnet – drawing everyone to him for licks and wags. Thank you for helping us find him – we feel like we hit the puppy jackpot!
-Megan Hi SHS! I just wanted to write and tell you how well Chantal is doing in her new home. She got a new name with her new family and now that we have Molly in our lives, we can’t imagine life without her. We weren’t surprised that it took her a few weeks to really come out of her shell. Now that she has, we’re beginning to see how some of her fearful behaviors might explain how our beautiful girl ended up as a stray. Luckily for her, we’re both dedicated to helping her overcome her insecurities. Working to teach her skills and communication has been endlessly rewarding. Now Molly has just passed her Dog Manners 1 class with jumping, leaping, and flying colors. We’re continuing to add new words to her repertoire, and learning just as many good tricks ourselves. Thank you so much for taking such good care of her and for all of the hard work that you do. The effort that you and everyone at Seattle Humane put into caring for these animals and helping them to build new lives is phenomenal. Molly owes her new home, and maybe even her life, to you. And we owe you our gratitude. Our own lives have been forever changed for the best.
-Amber Wilson, Nick Bond, and Molly. 10
Adopters Dear SHS,
We wanted to share an update on Lucy and Maude (formerly Dora and Lulu) who we adopted in March almost two years ago. We met them a week after our 17-year-old cat Maddy passed away. I visited your shelter with my son to donate what remained of Maddy’s prescription food and we thought we would just peek into the cat room. It wasn’t long before we were calling my husband to come down to meet the girls. Maude sealed the deal when she hugged my husband with her paws while he petted her. They have been a wonderful addition to our family and they keep us entertained every day. Lucy, the longhaired girl, likes to play with felt mice and feathers and she loves hanging out in the cat trees. She will politely ask for pets by sitting next to you on the couch and gently tap your shoulder or arm with her paw until you pet her. When she feels particularly affectionate, she will stretch out from head to toe on her back so you can pet her fuzzy tummy. Maude is bolder and more mischievous. She likes to chase the laser light and she loves to sneak around the house closing bathroom and bedroom doors. More than once I’ve found her stuck in a room alone because she closed herself inside! She is also much bolder in her pursuit of affection. She jumps in anyone’s lap and will put her face right in front of your face until she gets the appropriate amount of love. They love when we have guests over because they are very people-oriented, and more people means more hands to pet them. Thank you so much for taking such good care of them while they were with you. They are very sweet girls and we could not ask for better cats!
-Holly, Jason and Elliotte
Hello, I just wanted to give my deepest thanks to the Seattle Humane Society for uniting me with the most wonderful dog there is – Chewbacca! Chewie, formally Roderick, was found as a stray in Walla Walla, Wash., and eventually brought to the Seattle Humane Society. When I first met Chewie he was very timid, but sweet and eager to please. I was delighted to find he was completely housebroken and even knew how to sit! What a smart pup! Time has flown and it’s been about nine months since I brought my little wookie home. As he’s gotten comfortable with people and socialized with other dogs, he has finally let his full and amazing personality shine through. All he wants in his little dog life is to sunbathe in a cuddle puddle with my cats and have endless belly rubs (with some squeaky toy activities mixed in, of course). I’m so happy that fate has brought us together. He is the perfect Chewbacca to my Han Solo. I can’t imagine life without him! Thanks again for all you guys do!

Prizes for top fundraisers!
