SE BIKES 2019

Since day-one, SE Bikes has played a major role in the BMX lifestyle. It’s crazy to think that more than 40 years have passed since the godfather of BMX, Scot Breithaupt, created Scot Enterprises – SE Racing – and that we’ve been in the game ever since. At the birth of SE Racing in 1977, BMX was a fledgling sport. BMX went on to become a national craze in the U.S. during the 1980s with tracks popping up all over the country and scores of kids getting in on the fun and excitement. Over the years BMX has ebbed and flowed and trends have come and gone. At SE we’ve seen it all and have been intertwined in the BMX life every step of the way. We planted the SE flag with our very first frame — the JU-6 in 1978 — and were on the ground during the BMX explosion in the early ‘80s. We were there during the rise of freestyle and rode out the quiet early ‘90s. SE was on the scene for the arrival of the X-Games in 1995 and when BMX became an official Olympic sport in 2008. And we’re here today witnessing SE becoming the hottest bike on city streets. BMX is currently having a huge resurgence with kids (and adults) getting back on bikes. We have played a major role in this nationwide movement by producing high quality, unique bikes at affordable prices. This year we have added seven new BMX bikes to the line-up, making the 2019 SE line the biggest and strongest ever. Now let’s get kids on bikes!

GETTIN’ RAD SINCE 1977

On November 14, 1970, 35 teenagers aligned the front wheels of their Stingrays on a dirt track in Long Beach, California. As spectators began to crowd the sidelines for the first ever “pedal-cross” race, few could have predicted that Scot Breithaupt, the 14-year-old teenager who was collecting 25 cents from each participant, was forever changing the culture of the cycling industry. So when the start gun fired it wasn’t only the beginning of the first “pedalcross” BMX race, it was also the inauguration of the Bicycle United Motocross Society (BUMS), the first American sanctioned body of BMX. And so on a sunny Saturday in 1970, BMX as an industry, along with a newly regulated sanctioned body for racing, was born with Scot as its founding father. Scot didn’t just organize and promote BMX races throughout the mid-1970s; he was a top racer as well. In 1976, Scot earned the national #1 title in the National Bicycle Association. Over the years he became known as the “OM” — Old Man of the sport. Even though Scot was still in his teens, his experience, leadership and beard earned him the “OM” nickname in the new and youthful sport of BMX. In 1977, Scot consolidated his BMX ventures and founded Scot Enterprises, an advertising agency and public relations firm. Scot quickly combined his manufacturing experience with his advertising expertise and expanded Scot Enterprises to include the Scot Enterprise Racing Division, and thus SE Racing was born. Initially, SE Racing only manufactured hats, jerseys, t- shirts and stickers. The team’s first trips packed riders in an old school bus and embarked on nationwide tours that included not only racing but also teaching bicycle safety seminars. During the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, SE Racing produced some of the most innovative and famous BMX bikes of all time, such as the Quadangle, Floval Flyer, OM Flyer and the PK Ripper. To this day, the PK Ripper remains the longest running production BMX bike of all time. All of these groundbreaking bikes were created by Scot Breithaupt. Scott had a motto for the SE brand early on: “SE Racing - BMX Innovations.” He had a great vision of what BMX would become and he created bikes that could evolve with the sport. He was a true pioneer, innovator and legend. Unfortunately, Scot passed in July 2015, but his memories, accomplishments and the brand that he created will live on forever.

RETRO SERIES With unique and ground-breaking bikes such as the original PK Ripper and Quadangle, along with sponsorship of legendary riders such as Stu Thomsen, Perry Kramer, and Mike Buff, SE Racing was at the forefront of the first BMX boom over four decades ago. The original old-school SE bikes have now been recreated and transformed into various models with 16”, 20”, 24”, 26”, and even 27.5” and 29” wheel sizes. SE’s Retro BMX bikes of today have the same legendary design aesthetics that made them famous in the 1980s, but now are built with modern day geometry and upgrades galore. The Retro BMX line was originally created for the old-school BMX enthusiast. But the audience for the SE Retro line has grown organically and the bikes are now in demand by all types of riders, regardless of age, history or knowledge of SE’s storied past.

In the spirit of our legendary motto of “BMX Innovations,” we went deep into the design lab this year to develop the speediest ripper ever, the 29” Fast Ripper. We took the Big Ripper and reengineered it with a SRAM GX 1x10 drivetrain, Shimano Deore 10-speed cassette, Avid BB5 disc brakes, an integrated headset, and internal cable routing. This bike is built for speed so it’s only fitting that it comes equipped with Freedom ThickSlick tires. It’s fast. Can you keep up?

In the late 70’s, BMX wasn’t the only groundbreaking sport that was taking America by storm. Alongside BMX kids on bikes imitating motorcycles, there was a wave of shaggy haired California kids on skateboards mimicking surfers. At the heart of the skate scene in Venice Beach, CA, Dogtown Skates was born. This year we teamed up with one of the most iconic skate brands of Southern California culture to create the Dogtown Big Ripper. Marshawn Lynch’s 27.5+ Beast Mode Ripper makes its much-anticipated return this year. Long before Marshawn became an NFL Super Bowl Champion and a running back for the Oakland Raiders, he had a love for BMX. So we got together with Marshawn to develop a bike that not only could withstand his abuse, but also captures the elements of his home town of Oakland, CA. This year’s silver and black beast of a bike has been upgraded with the addition of front disc brake to help stop the big 27.5” x 3.0” Beast Mode tires in their tracks. The 27.5+ OM-Duro takes its design cues and aesthetics from the legendary OM Flyer and mixes in some radical mountain bike-style upgrades. This wildly unique bike comes in standard and XL sizes and features big 27.5 x 3.0” tires, a SRAM GX 1x10 drivetrain, Avid BB5 disc brakes front and rear, a new external bottom bracket, and internal cable routing for a dropper seatpost. A staple in BMX for nearly as long as the sport has been in existence, the 26” OM Flyer was originally designed by and named after SE’s founder, Scot “Old Man” Breithaupt. This bike captures the essence of BMX’s past four decades. It is built to last with a retro styled 4130 Cr-Mo frame featuring a classic Looptail rear end. New this year are the sealed bearing SE Mohawk hubs along with two gold SE wheelie pegs. All hail the OM.

STR-24 QUADANGLE 24”

Before the Quadangle there was the STR-1. This dates back to the late 1970s when Stu Thomsen was SE Racing’s National #1 pro and the sport’s first superstar. The STR-1 was Stu’s signature frame and it had a unique design feature with double down tubes wrapping completely underneath the bottom bracket shell. Less than ten STR-1 bikes were produced, making it almost mythical and the most sought-after frame of all time in the vintage BMX world. Fast forward over 40 years to today and SE is proud to bring you the limited edition STR-24. ELITE RACE GETTIN’ RAD SINCE ‘77

When organized BMX racing came onto the scene back in the 1970s, SE Racing was the first company to produce a high-end aluminum BMX frame, which later went on to become the PK Ripper. This jaw dropping bike first debuted in the late ‘70s, right at the tipping point when BMX racing became a nationwide craze. The PK Ripper has always featured floval (flat + oval = floval) tubing which is still used for the top tube on all bikes in the Elite Race series, while the down tubes are now wider diameter and bi-oval shaped for increased stiffness. The Elite Race series starts with the Mini Ripper for the little tikes, all the way up to the Floval Flyer for the larger cruiser class.

MAKING IT HAPPEN

Each and every bike in the SE line begins with a simple idea. From there we transform that idea into a detailed plan. That plan is then communicated directly with our factory and parts suppliers to turn that original idea into a new frame, fork and parts. All of those parts will eventually be assembled to become an awesome new bike. Creating a bike from a simple idea is very detailed process. We couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it without having a very close relationship with our factory. We are deeply involved with that process every step of the way. From the initial idea, all the way through to being on hand at the factory, observing the bikes being assembled on the production line. This is the start of it all. This is where we make it happen.
