Editor’s note

“Limitations live only in our minds. But if we use our imagination, our possibilities become limitless.” – Jamie Paolinetti, Film Writer & Director

Why limit ourselves? We live in two worlds: One real and the other fantastical. The number of ways in which we can live our lives in either world, are limitless. But, of course, the key to living bountiful (and meaningful) lives — in either world — is to always be true to yourself. It doesn’t matter what roles you take on, as long as you treat others with honesty and, above all, the same way you would like to be treated. This is and always will be the golden rule. Our real life aspects should often come last in a virtual world, only because virtual lives are an outlet for dreams and escapisms. A virtual world should be a utopian universe — be whatever you choose to be, take on a character of whomever you aspire to be; always aiming to be as creative and imaginative as you’ve never been before. In all virtual gaming platforms, it is important to also respect every person’s game. Meaning, how a person chooses to play their character is but their prerogative. In this issue we emphasize on the allure of the fantasy world — its beauty and its charm. From metallic, armor-like wings to dreamy feather-soft ones, or for that matter, the game of good and evil by way of hellish beings vs angelic deities; there’s so much to be explored when we choose to delve further into Second Life’s astonishing realm.

But we’ve not forgotten the grid’s human dimensions. It is always our priority to highlight creators that brilliantly convey the things we could never find in our first/real lives and yet can have and enjoy in the second. This is also a wonderful perk that has been known to add a smile to Second Life players aged 18 or 80. A good friend of mine, Levio Serenity, the owner/creator of Wonderful World of Meeroos and game developer for MadPea Productions, once told me: “Why not embrace fantasy here [in Second Life] when in real life we can only dream it?” And he is right. Usually, the fun only begins when we take on a fantasy character, be it a neko, vampire, angel, devil, beast or mystical being. The idea is to dream big and then create for your characters an illustrious backstory, and as the saying goes, “the rest will follow.” Second U Magazine wishes you good luck and a safe journey on all your legendary quests! orn in San Francisco, California, and a current resident of the State of Alaska, Catalina Firethorn is a motivational example of perseverance and hard work. Perhaps her zealous passion stems from her real life profession as a teacher, or maybe it is the positive upbringing and values she’s inherited from her supportive father. Either way, through her work with [Aleutia], Firethorn champions the cause to always give back to the community. [ Aleutia ] was founded in June 2016 and has since leaped into recognition via the dedication of its team whom work hard in producing quality products. Currently participating in major events, such as The Liaison Collaborative, On9, Swank, Lost and Found and The Secret Affair, just to mention a few, [ Aleutia ] is set to head to greater heights and not to mention, the right direction.

a personal one, but a journey in bringing awareness to a resource-limited community whom rely on the means of viable income gained within a virtual environment. Catalina hopes to inspire a difference by sharing and teaching her knowledge of tech business to others in the same field. With such a noble task on her hands, it comes with no surprise that Firethorn fully dedicates herself to the cause, which in turn contributes to the success of her brand.

The creator and the staff behind [ Aleutia ] are top-notch. the business is organized and the quality of the creations is wonderful and creative. I am proud to say I blog for [ Aleutia ]. – Heidi Volare, Blogger

Second U Magazine had the opportunity to interview Firethorn and discover the inspirational journey that’s [Aleutia]. On the seed of inspiration… I never imagined myself becoming a Second Life designer. Last May, an opportunity came along to be mentored by Ms. Samantha Jones of LaVian who offered to teach me the online business ropes. I was excited and jumped at the opportunity and

prospect of learning something new. When searching for a name, I wanted my brand to be a bridge between my Second Life and my real one. The name Aleutia is an adaptation of the Alaskan word “Aleutian”, which refers to not only a chain of islands, but also a mountain range in Alaska. On market challenges… I knew it would be a lot of work to create a new brand and compete in a female fashion-saturated market, but various reasons pushed me forward, the strongest being my father who was a strong supporter of my dreams and my community. On Aleutia’s Style… [Aleutia] began as a Boho Chic concept; however, we’ve slowly morphed into more contemporary fashion with the occasional take on fun/fantasy and role play.

trending colors. On the design challenges… The biggest challenge has been delving into the original mesh component. We do not use Daz3D or TurboSquid or any of the other sites out there where you can purchase pre-made mesh. Everything we create is 100% original. The other challenge has been the eligibility to join in certain events. However, the eternal optimist in me will always continue to hope. There is a quote where I work that say, “Opportunity masks itself as hard work,” and so I know that with time and hard work, opportunity will come knocking.

On the Rewards… There are so many rewarding aspects to [Aleutia] that it is hard to pin down just one. Every day is filled with an opportunity to create, to try, to design. I’ve made new friends and found On working as a team… I always refer to ways to give back to charities through [Aleutia] in plural form. The reason is that what I can do as a designer. Creating the the brand would not be where it is brand has pushed me in a hundred small without the contributions of some ways, and I feel as if it’s given me a extraordinarily talented individuals. We purpose in Second Life that can be have a phenomenal team: Moonsoul positive and wonderful. Each of us and work in a small village of about 500 tackle a piece of the puzzle and together it people above the Arctic Circle. Life here results in [Aleutia] flourishing. can be full of challenges. We have no restaurants, no malls, no movie theaters, On [Aleutia] products… We currently no fast food, not much of what many offer female apparel and shoes that focus consider to be “modern everyday on contemporary/casual chic fashion. Most work templates, striving to create items that are can be found in mines, commercial fishing unique and worth acquiring. We have also (during the summer), or moving to cities recently released our first manicure sets like Anchorage and Fairbanks. And this is what had me thinking about [Aleutia] and how we could use it to help bring that sense of “more” to the community. The brand ideals… The goal is to make my virtual business successful and profitable, so that I can then share the same methods with the members of my real life community whom are becoming increasingly tech-savvy. These methods create a way for them to look at technology in a different perspective [and how] there is so much more they can do with it. On the creative process among the team… We collaborate from the beginning when we’re hunting for inspiration to the end when we’re debating what to call a finished product. I love that when we’re tossing ideas back and forth, there’s very much a “how can I help” atmosphere. It fills each day with joy when there is that kind of environment to work in.

Catalina is not afraid to take risks, and she gladly gives responsibilities to the people she trusts. the brand has been very successful due to her vision and hard work. This excitement is shared and I am proud to work with her. – Moonsoul Resident, Blogger Manager

FASHION FEATURE

L

Like many other stores in SL, Wicca’s Wardrobe started out its journey as a small pose store that catered to friends. For many years, the brand’s owner, Wicca Merlin, has been an accomplished fashion model and blogger, equipped with the necessary tools to understand the art of posing, fashion modeling and the ever-changing Second Life trends. But it was Merlin’s interest in making clothing and accessories that drove her to learn the trade of original mesh to uniquely lay the foundation to Wicca’s Wardrobe’s style. The three-year old brand has moved from using mesh templates to designing original mesh, which provides the ability to not only be able to express creativity, but also to standout from the rest. At present, Wicca’s Wardrobe ranks among the best in apparel designers in Second Life, and actively participates in reputable events, such as We <3 Roleplay, ROMP, Gacha Guardians, Enchantment, The Liaison Collaborative, WCF7 and the Black Fair. On originality… I wanted something different, not just to texture mesh that already existed and was available to everyone. While Blender took some time to learn, my real life and Second Life partner, Redcla Inshan and I persevered in learning the [design] process. We tasted blood and wanted more. Today, we can make our own original meshes for outfits, shoes, accessories and jewelry. While it can be a long road (at least for me it is), the ability to work original items in mesh is very satisfying. On style... “Beyond the Ordinary” is our slogan and it describes us perfectly. We do not follow a certain trend or fashion directive. I am interested in fashion — but, of course — however, we do whatever we feel like creating for Wicca’s Wardrobe. To be able to have free rein on creativity is fun, and it eliminates boundaries that allows for expressing ourselves, while adding a design twist. On teamwork... I could never do all this on my own. We are a handful of friends enjoying creativity and having a little fun while at it. Sometimes, we work all together at a single time and, at others, separately. In the end it is a shared process, giving our creations more diversity. On Wicca’s products... We concentrate mostly on womenswear, but sometimes we also release products for men. I still do poses, although this category has become very rare. We do them mostly when requested by clients, and upon their approval, we may then later release them for sale. 114 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

On design challenges... The greatest challenge was finding our niche and the struggle of keeping the business afloat (in the beginning). It is quite difficult to become a recognized and respected designer in [Second Life’s] fashion industry… On the most rewarding aspects... Our customers. Their positive feedback to our designs continue to inspire us to keep growing. Also, being recognized and awarded as Favorite New Fashion Designer in the AviChoice Awards in 2014 was one of the greatest highlights for Wicca’s Wardrobe. On the creative process... The most exciting part of the creative process is watching an idea grow and become the real thing. Starting with just an idea, then the mesh design and how a simple vertex in the 3D program becomes more and more detailed, and then a fully realized item. Finally, texturing — an important aspect of the design process — which translates it into a realistic fashion product. It is rather complex, and a long process, but watching an idea materialize is one of the best feelings ever. On customer perks… We started out using templates, but now we create our own original mesh, which works better for our customers and ourselves. Wicca’s Wardrobe also offers an Inworld group in addition to a subscriber’s group. The Inworld group joiner is $L99 and it offers group gifts and access to all previous group releases. It also boasts 100% discounts on selected items and, shares news on special events. Subscriber group members will also receive a gift when they join the group.

Also, I was part of the Vampire community…” But the “skin trade” wasn’t Rae’s first foray into starting up her SL business. Creating in SL since 2007, Rae was producing cyberpunk/gothic shoes and accessories out of “sculpties” (read: Prims) for her label, Burning Chrome. A year and after several self-taught Photoshop sessions later, Rae graduated to opening her first skin store named Heartsick. Second U Magazine speaks with the spritely designer to uncover Lumae’s full story. I saw a lack of really pale skins here in SL… At that time, there was perhaps only one brand that made them well, and the rest ranged from tan shades to über-tan… I was part of the Vampire community at the time, and tanned vampires were also lamenting the lack of proper pale skins! Hence, I started out making some skins for myself, and then a small skin store to see if anyone else would be interested in wearing them. Lo and behold, Lumae was born. Lumae has been around since February 2014… However, I’ve been making things in SL since 2007. Originally, I made cyberpunk and gothic shoes/accessories before “sculpties” were introduced [into the game]. These creations were released under the store name, Burning Chrome, under my original avatar — Amesha Jewell. After a lot of trial and error, video tutorials and teaching myself Photoshop from the ground up, I finally managed to create my first set of skins. Heartsick, my first skin store, debuted in 2008. In 2012, I rebranded Heartsick to Aeva. However, being known as Heartsick for 4 years, it became affectionately known as Aeva // Heartsick. Once I took the leap to my alt Lumiya Rae, I began Lumae, with a shiny and clean inventory, debuting at Skin Fair 2014. To cut the long story short, I’ve been making skins for 9 years, but in several different incarnations of my brand. 128 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

BEAUTY FEATURE I have always tried to focus on depth and realism… Always striving to make them [the skins] as realistic as I possibly can, including my fantasy-style tints/tones. I seek to create lively and glowing skins that are almost magical but in “normal” human skin tones just so I’m offering something that’s a little bit different from what’s out there. I often have people IM me to let me know how much they love the warmth of the skin tones and my freckles, which are much appreciated. I have always worked by myself… I take care of customer service personally. I feel that it allows me to keep a very personal and hands-on touch with the people whom support my work. Recently, though, I have relied a bit more heavily on my group Moderators, and have even taken on a Blogger Manager, which has been of a huge help. I currently only offer women’s skins… Both in natural human tones, as well as a wide range of fantasy skin tones. I support the main mesh body brands in SL and I am working on offering a wide variety of head appliers, too. All my skins packs include body appliers so you’ll never have to buy them separately. I also like to make little accessories now and again — my current favorite things to make are head chains and hair accessories. I am hoping to expand my skin range — in the near future — to cater to men again. They will also be in matching human and fantasy tones to compliment the existing female skins. The Tonic Body… Is for sale in my store. Created by my good friend, Fizz Savira, the body comes in two optional shapes: one very curvy and the other a slender version. I was really impressed with the beautiful work she’s put into creating them and so we’ve come together to make the skin and bodies work in harmony! We encourage clothing designers to mesh for the body as there is a developer kit available. The body is also Omega applier compatible, plus Bento Hands update is soon to be released. Once the work on the new body is finished with my newest range of skins, the body will include them in the HUD! One of the most challenging aspects… Pushing myself to find new ways of approaching skin design by way of learning and experimenting with new techniques. It hasn’t always been an easy road, but the breakthrough moments are amazingly worth it! One huge challenge has been getting noticed. Even when taking part in events as much as possible, it is really easy to be overlooked, which can be very disheartening. You have to have a lot of determination to keep going.

130 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

Success in the recent years… I have seen an increase in the number of people joining my store’s group, in addition to more people wearing my skins. I owe a lot of that to being accepted as an approved skin designer for major mesh head brands as well as the support of my loyal customers. The amazing group of bloggers I have been fortunate to work with over the years have also been integral to getting my brand recognized on a wider scale. The most rewarding thing for me — by far — is seeing people talking about their favorite skins, and posting links to their pictures on Flickr, and other media. I absolutely love to see how they incorporate it into their own individual style and photography. Other rewarding aspects include: Having a close relationship with my customers and asking them for suggestions, which really makes me feel like they are involved in the design process and I love it! I try to take part in a wide range of events… You can normally find me participating in Enchantment, Genre, The Coven, Buy Now Monthly, We Love Roleplay on a regular basis. I also have some newer ventures like The Avenue. I always make sure to take part in the yearly Skin Fair too, which occurs annually in March. My Inworld store group… Has a L$10 join fee, which serves to keep out as many grievers and bots as possible. I send out group gifts regularly, like special editions of skins, makeup, or cute, little accessories. Usually, when I launch a new skin release, I’ll choose one of the skin tones and make a special edition group gift version. These are always available to pick up at the store. Last month, I did a special edition head chain that you could only get through the group — it makes membership much more fun! Sometimes, I launch sale events that give group members a particular discount. For more on Lumae, please visit their social media links at:

SPECIAL FEATURE

B

Between a photographer and his subject, there’s the million-dollar question of the on-set rapport

that results in the photo’s final composition. But this is real life. In SL, there’s only the choice of a carefully studied, or for that matter, candid pose, that speaks volumes on these intrinsic dynamics. Enter Drunk Panda, a pose store founded by Johanna Frost and RobotoXx in July 2016, which offers a variety of poses to take your Second Life photography to the next level. This creative business venture was largely inspired by both founders’ love for photography and blogging. Second U Magazine finds out more from Frost…

We create poses related to anything that inspire us. — JOHANNA FROST

We [do not] have just one style… We make poses [for just] about everything that inspires us. You can find single, couples, casual, dance, kinky, friendly, sex poses... Everything! Of late, we’ve also made poses that include mesh items, too. The challenges we face… With so many pose brands, the hard part is to be unique and give [the poses] a realistic feeling that will make people love it. 156 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

The most rewarding experiences… There is nothing better than the moment when you see people liking your work and taking pictures using your poses, or talk about them to others, as well as taking the time to message us to express their love for our work. Our creative process is… We feel our poses. It’s like we are there, living the moment — just like when you have fun, cuddle, fight… There is a spirit when we work on our poses that makes us feel alive in this game. Participating in events… Drunk Panda is currently participating in the Kinky Event. Our Inworld group… There is no charge to join our group. We share every new release, so we can keep everyone abreast with our new products. In addition, we have gifts in our main store for group members. That’s the way we give back and show our love.

THE MONTHLY SHOPPING EVENT FOR MORE THAN JUST ROLE-PLAYERS. Story Abbey Lucian

220 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

!

An event that showcases reputable designers and their high quality creations, We <3 Roleplay opened its doors in Second Life in 2012. Priding itself on championing quality over quantity, Team Roleplay handpicks all its participating stores whom occasionally offer special discount deals up to 25% off. Second U Magazine speaks with event organizers to find out more. What inspired the launch of We <3 Roleplay? It was a spontaneous idea after seeing so many crappy events, as well as being fueled by the constant whining from men on there being nothing out there for RP-ers. What sets We <3 Roleplay apart from other shopping events, being that it is more than just an event for strictly fantasy roleplayers ? We do not hinder creativity with arbitrary themes. We cater to the customers, too — not only to the creators. The event offers an actual discount [on selected items], no gacha-style point of sales and [overall] quality control. The simple fact that our team consists of actual friends and not just people whom happen to work together means zero drama… What can you tell us about the creators participating in this event? The creators in this event have several reasons to participate: They want to make money, like everyone else, [ however ] they are creative and inspired by the possibility to offer something different. They love their customers and want to offer them a deal. They value working with a professional team. They also enjoy being able to come up with entire outfits and [not rely on] sets [that cater more] to gacha type sales. What are the benefits of joining We <3 Roleplay? W <3 RP is lead by a professional team who gives every creator, no matter how well known their brand is, a chance to participate — as long as their products showcases quality. The event also offers lesser known brands an opportunity to become known to thousands of customers. The traffic [for the event] is very good, and the advertising on various platforms and in our 7K++ members group has been positive. The pricing for booths are also comparably reasonable, too. For more on We <3 Roleplay, visit on the event’s official website!

Angel Manor bridges the illustrious past with beautiful present. Story Abbey Lucian

Founded by Kaya Angel, Angel Manor is a treasured Second Life landmark that pays homage to Britain’s Edwardian period. This opulent manor spreads across 10 sims and will soon expand to 12. Although a non-roleplay sim, Angel Manor welcomes players to immerse their characters within the atmospheric environments that range from the manor’s garden to the state rooms, library, Roman bath houses and more. Home to a series of notable SL landmarks, such as The Rose Theater, The Rose Lounge, The Opera House, The Grand hall, the Art Gallery and Ballroom; the Angel Manor has also played host to special art and charitable events on its spatial grounds. There are also rental apartments/homes for those who’d like to call the Angel Manor home in addition to commercial stores for buildings and furniture. Managed by founder Angel, the Angel Manor’s charity and private event bookings are handled by Lisa Valentino Angel. Sparkie Cyberstar is the go-to person for event coordinations, while the manor’s renowned Rose Art Gallery is curated by Mr Lambert. Perfect

At Second U Magazine, we believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that beholder is: You. We’re championing and — but, of course — celebrating the many talented bloggers, graphic designers, Flickr enthusiasts whom have all inspired us. Documenting the virtual world through their eyes on a digital platform, we’ve been living vicariously through them and in turn inspired others to live vicariously via the beauty of this Arcadia we call Second Life.
