ASSOCIATES A Market Leader in the Design, Build & Installation of Golf Driving Ranges
Golf clubs are more than ever having to look for new ways to not only increase revenue, but offer their members something a little extra to keep up with the growing number of golfers who want a club that can deliver all their needs under one roof. Building a small driving range - up to say 8 to 10 driving bays - is something that’s been tested with great success by a number of golf clubs throughout the UK, as Mike Copson, founder of Mike Copson Associates explained in a recent interview: Building a small driving range - up to say 8 to 10 driving bays - is

to look for ways to retain current members and attract new members, by raising their standards and offering better facilities at their clubs. Existing practice grounds at most clubs are valuable pieces of land that have never generated an income for the club in years; they are also very limited and restricted in their use because of the safety to members when walking up and down to collect their ‘own’ golf balls. The development of a small Driving Range with a teaching bay or indoor video/club fitting room will add an extra dimension to members’ practice. And, as an added revenue stream, they offer major benefits to the golf club and golf pro’s especially during bad weather conditions, i.e. summer of 2012, rain, rain and more rain. No more lost revenue from cancelled golf lessons; with members still able to practice in the comfort of a covered Driving Range Bay, enabling the club to earn income from range ball sales on wet days. The club’s Golf Pro is the most likely person to run and operate a Driving Range for the club, due to their knowledge and experience in the golf business. They will be able to promote and encourage members to use the range for more practice, thereby increasing their own lessons and club fitting in dry conditions whilst also helping to sell more golf clubs from the Pro Shop. The club would not lose members to other clubs with better practice facilities and would instead attract new members because of its own improved practice facilities.” Having been designing and building Golf Driving Ranges since 1988, Mike Copson Associates is today recognised as a leading specialist in the U.K; boasting 70 successfully completed major projects including the P.G.A. National Golf Academy at The Belfrey, Devere Hotels, Marriott Golf & Country Clubs, Crown Golf, Burhill Group, as well as numerous private and public Golf Clubs. Mike let us in on the secret to the company’s year-on-year success: “We are happy to take on full turnkey projects or individual designed packages to suit each client. We strive to provide a truly customerfocused service ensuring the client’s expectations are not only met but in many cases exceeded.”

CLECKHEATON
GOLF CLUB
It has been over 100 years since Cleckheaton and District Golf Club was formed and it is still thriving over a century on. The Alistair Mckenzie designed course measures in at just under 6,000 yards, 5,985 in total. The parkland course offers a real challenge for players of all abilities. Cleckheaton hasn’t always been in its current location though; it was moved there in 1922. Cleckheaton and District Golf Club is a private members club with an active membership, friendly club atmosphere and very strong juniors section. Visitors are most welcome though. There is emphasis on the older golfers that attend; this comes in the form of EGGS, the Elderly Gentleman’s Golfers Society. Membership is available across all ages and can be paid over 12 months by standing order: there is a small discount
for paying in full. Members benefits include being able to introduce up to 3 guests at a reduced green fee along with being able to receive a gold card which gives them a minimum of 10% reduction of their bar bill. Cleckheaton has plenty of facilities that will attract both experienced and novice golfers; one of these facilities is the pro-shop. This shop can offer you video analysis of your swing, posture and other aspects of your golfing techniques. Lessons are also available, again across the whole age spectrum. Societies and corporate companies are given a warm welcome to this golf club and will be given the options of various packages or they can tailor a package to suit their individual needs and budget. An interesting feature of Cleckheaton is the well established and thriving
Rabbits Section. This caters for players with a handicap from 16-28. The Rabbits Section enjoy both competitive and friendly golf throughout the season. Competitive golf includes both the Bradford & District and the Yorkshire Rabbits Golf Association competitions. There is the annual battle against neighbours, East Bierley, for the coveted Spen Spoon. During 2013 they played in 10 friendly matches against local clubs. Also run are the eclectic ‘King Rabbit’ tournaments as well as a number of Honours Board competitions. The Rabbits Section has a large membership and also aims to raise funds to support the club through its golf and social events. Cleckheaton and District Golf Club has many different aspects that allow it to cater for many different abilities and ages of the golfing community, definitely a club that should be paid a visit to.

WELWYN GARDEN CITY GOLF CLUB
Welcomes Societies & New Members
If your Golf Society is planning its next golf day, Welwyn Garden City Golf Club ticks all the right boxes, offering not only a well-maintained course that is suitable for players of all levels, but also the latest in modern facilities to meet the needs of its 21st Century visitors. The Club has grown and gathered momentum since its inception in the early 1920’s, when golfers would play armed with a few irons, a niblick and a scythe - an instrument used to clear the grass from around the ball to enable it to be seen. Players were also only allowed a maximum of 12 golf balls per player; with the game being deemed to have been finished when all 12 had been lost. Thankfully today members and visitors alike can take advantage of the Club’s challenging 18-hole course; with its 19th hole to be found in its Clubhouse, as David Spring - the Club’s General Manager, outlined in a recent interview:
David added: “On a warm summer day, there can be few things better than sitting on our newly refurbished patio overlooking the course, with a cool drink in your hand. It provides a wonderful panorama of the course, and a place to watch people playing the 17th and 18th” The latest project that the Club is starting in September 2013 is the construction of a reservoir and water harvesting pond in order to guarantee the Club’s water supply for years to come. The water harvesting will be taken from the roofs and car par areas around the clubhouse and will feed into an extended pond adjacent to the 17th hole. This should provide a large proportion of the Club’s annual water requirement for the course, and will be supplemented by water pumped from the Club’s bore hole. The fact that Welwyn Garden City Golf Club is ‘home’ to prestigious players such as Sir Nick Faldo and Walker Cup player Tom Lewis, who won the 2011 Portugal Masters in only his third professional tournament, serves as a seal of approval to prospective members and visiting Societies.
“Thanks to a continual commitment to maintain the course to extremely high standards and improve its features, Welwyn Garden City Golf Club has been able to achieve an enviable reputation for consistently providing members and guests with a course to rival any in the area, whilst offering excellent dining and drinking facilities within a warm, friendly environment.”
The last word goes to David: “We are happy to host a variety of days ranging from small societies to large corporate or charity days and are in the vicinity of three reasonably priced hotels and a vast number of local bed and breakfast establishments.” “You can play 18, 27 or 36 holes and our packages can be adapted to meet the smallest or largest of needs. We employ friendly staff to ensure your day runs as smoothly as possible and have excellent catering and bar facilities.”
Set in undulating parkland, the course may at first sight seem a relatively easy test of golf, but with narrow fairways and small greens there are many scorecards that tell a different story. The course is a par 70 for men and, at 5,527 yards, par 72 for ladies, providing a fair and enjoyable test for any level of golfer; with our superb drainage making it a truly year-round course, providing a good venue for winter visitors and societies.
“Availability permitting, you can book any weekday, so don’t miss the opportunity to book your society on one of the best kept courses in Hertfordshire, as our 2013 Society package is booking up fast.”
Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn that many societies, including some from as far away as the South Coast and Scotland, return year after year to enjoy the course and hospitality.

Welwyn Garden City is particularly proud of the improvements made to the facilities, which, since the original clubhouse opened its doors in 1928, have undergone many refurbishments and changes including recent refurbishments to the locker rooms, pro shop (including fully fitted swing studio) and bar areas.

THINK ..........EXCITING SOCIETY GOLF DAY OUT THINK...........AWARD-WINNING PYECOMBE GOLF CLUB
Throughout the year, the Directors at the Golf Yearbook Online select Golf Clubs that have best demonstrated a proven ability to go that extra mile in not only meeting but exceeding the needs of their members and visitors alike. Therefore, in line with this philosophy, it gives us pleasure to announce PYECOMBE GOLF CLUB has been selected to receive the SOUTHERN COUNTIES GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013, a totally independent Award Programme recognised both in this country and abroad. This Award Scheme was created in order to recognise those businesses and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their particular field. The Golf Yearbook Online is always keen to bring attention to those who are providing a product or service that stands out from the crowd and deserves to be appreciated not only by its’ readers, but also by a wider audience. Not every Golf Club can walk away with one of these accolades, that have become the hallmark of success, but those that do all emerge from the process more successful; with many having gone on 2014
to become acknowledged leaders in the marketplace. Boasting a rich history dating back to 1894, Pyecombe Golf Club’s 18hole, 6289 yard course, was quick to gain approval from the iconic James Braid who, on being asked to recommend alterations that would improve the course, went on to say ‘he thought highly of the course’. Having built-up an excellent reputation for the warm welcome it extends to visitors, golf societies and corporate visitors, the Club’s Managing Secretary
Alan Davey outlined some of the many advantages Pyecombe has to offer: “Located six miles north of Brighton, our friendly ‘downland gem’ is set in the heart of the South Downs National Park, offering members and visitors alike not only a challenging course to test the skill of golfers of all abilities, but also panoramic views of the Sussex Weald with its famous ‘Jack & Jill’ windmills.” Pyecombe is maintained to the highest standards by the Club’s Head
Greenkeeper – Simon Wells, who added: “The fact that our course benefits from a chalk base, enables golfers to play on it virtually 365 days a year. So visiting Societies can relax in the knowledge that their booking will not be cancelled due to bad weather conditions.” Since it celebrated its Centenary in 1994 the Club has remained committed to consolidating its position as a leading downland golf course by investing in improvements both on the course and in the Clubhouse: Simon went on
to say: “As part of the South Downs National Park, we are committed to protect and promote the environment in any development work carried out. Thereby enabling players to continue enjoying the fauna, wild flowers and wildlife to be seen throughout the course.” Societies are able to visit Pyecombe any day during the week with special rates available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. In a recent interview the Club’s Assistant Managing Secretary Matthew Bolton went on to say: “Visitors are assured of a warm welcome at Pyecombe where they can experience our superb course and take advantage of the many other facilities we have available at the Club.” The Golf Yearbook panel felt that the course is stunning – a real gem! It’s a lovely course which is excellently maintained and offers a challenging test to any level of golfer. In addition, upon visiting Pyecombe, the Yearbook panel found the course:• In fantastic condition with top greens and fairways cut to perfection • A challenge on both still and windy days • Excellent venue for society days as a true test for all ranges of handicaps • A course with a lot of character and a lot of variety for the competent golfer • By far the most beautiful picturesque course in the area – a really charming course with beautiful views over the Sussex Weald, where the flora and fauna also add to the charm • The food was excellent, we particularly like the ‘full round breakfast’ • Excellent value for money for a course of such calibre • Finally, we have had feedback that many courses in the area are brilliant but are let down
2014
by a somewhat pretentious and unwelcoming attitude from the staff. This is not the case at all with Pyecombe. Our panel were really impressed with all the reports of the warm friendly and welcoming attitude of staff which really put Pyecombe ahead of the rest in the face of fierce competition. Commenting on receiving this accolade, the Club’s Managing Secretary Alan Davey went on to say: “Receiving the SOUTHERN COUNTIES GOLF CLUB OF
THE YEAR AWARD 2013 is a milestone for PYECOMBE GOLF CLUB and is another piece of the jigsaw confirming the Club’s success, as well as acting as a seal of approval to prospective members and visitors.”

MAIDENHEAD SCOOPS AWARD AS SOUTH ENGLAND SOCIETY GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR 2013 Throughout the year, the Directors at the Golf Yearbook Online select Golf Clubs that have best demonstrated a proven ability to go that extra mile in not only meeting but exceeding the needs of their members and visitors alike. Therefore, in line with this philosophy, it gives us pleasure to announce MAIDENHEAD GOLF CLUB has been selected to receive the SOUTH ENGLAND SOCIETY GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013, a totally independent Award Programme that is recognised both in this country and abroad.
2013
GOLFCLUB The Award Scheme was created in order to recognise those businesses and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their particular field. The Golf Yearbook Online is always keen to bring attention to those who are providing a product or service that stands out from the crowd and deserves to be appreciated not only by its’ readers, but also by a wider audience. Not every Golf Club can walk away with one of these accolades, that have become the hallmark of success, but those that do all emerge from the process more successful; with many having gone on to become acknowledged leaders in the marketplace. Formed in 1896 by the Brigade of Guards and Naval Officers, Award-winning Maidenhead Golf Club was later developed by Mr W H Grenfell, Mayor of Maidenhead (subsequently Lord Desborough). At 6,338 yards from the white championship tees, it is perhaps not long by today’s
standards, but the fact that the course record stands at just five under the par of 70 would suggest that it has stood the test of time remarkably well. Peter O’Hara Chairman of Marketing & Membership commented: “The greens are slightly smaller than is the norm, placing a premium on accuracy with the approach shot or, should you miss the putting surface in regulation, a sharp short game comes in very handy, as intended by our course designer when he drew up the course in 1896.” In presenting this Award the Judges were particularly impressed with the commitment on the part of MGC, acknowledged as ‘A hidden gem in the heart of Maidenhead’, to develop and improve the course and Club facilities it offers to members and visitors alike. A prime example being the installation of a full fairway irrigation system in 2005. “We are always looking at ways to enhance
yet further the golfing experience and improvement work is undertaken each winter.” This philosophy is further evident in the purpose-built Clubhouse which was completed in 1996 to mark the Club’s Centenary. Boasting a comfortable Players Bar, Lounge and Restaurant, MGC’s Clubhouse is the perfect place in which members and visitors alike can relax and socialise, as well as enjoy delicious meals and refreshments. Whether your group is large or small, MGC can guarantee a great day out; with a choice of 18 or 36 holes of golf on a beautifully maintained course, plus great food and excellent facilities all ensuring you thoroughly enjoy your MGC experience! Peter added: “Our restaurant manager together with our Chef would be pleased to discuss any special dietary 2013
requests visiting Societies may have. Our dedicated team will be on hand throughout the day to ensure visiting Societies remember their time at Maidenhead for all the right reasons.” Corporate Golf Membership at MGC enables the ideal opportunity to play golf, entertain your business guests, build relationships or provide a reward for your staff. Your Corporate Membership can be tailored to suit your requirements, offering your members and guests the benefit to enjoy MGC’s wonderful golf course and excellent facilities. For further details of the Club’s Corporate Membership please Email: manager@maidenheadgolf.co.uk or Tel: 01628 624693. Members and visitors are also able to
take advantage of MGC’s well-stocked Pro Shop, run by the Club’s Professionals Steve and Vicki, in which you will find an array of golf equipment, accessories and clothing from leading brands at competitive prices. Steve and Vicki also provide coaching sessions for beginners through to accomplished players wishing to improve their game. As part of the Royal Borough of Maidenhead and Windsor Advantage ‘Card Scheme’ MCG also give visitors a 20% discount off all green fees for anyone that has an
Advantage card. Bringing the interview to a close, the Club’s President Chris Locke said: “We may not have water features or steep hills but we do have a course that provides a testing challenge to low handicap golfers whilst being not too daunting for the higher handicappers.” Receiving this accolade serves as a distinguishing factor that ranks MAIDENHEAD GOLF CLUB MGC amongst the best in its field, as well as acting as a seal of approval to prospective members and visitors alike.

Since its inception in 1977 the Club has remained committed to improving and developing the golf facilities it offers, including increasing the course to 18 holes in 1985, as the Club’s Secretary Robert Jones explained in a recent interview: “By drawing on the expertise of our hardworking team, we take real pride in providing a well-maintained course which is in
excellent condition. Players are challenged from the onset by one of the most difficult opening holes in North Wales, together with two of the most memorable finishing holes, testing the skill of golfers of all abilities. A prime example being the par-517th hole - with its’ rolling fairway and green in a bowl at the end, this may look straightforward, but your skills will be put to the test even when you reach the green.” We have recently completed a purpose-built Practice Area which includes a Chipping Green, Practice Nets and a Bunker.”
Key to securing this Award was the Club’s philosophy to extend a warm welcome to visitors and societies. Boasting two Bars, one acting as Lounge and the other as a Dining & Function Room, the Clubhouse provides a warm and friendly welcome at the beginning and the end of a great day’s golf. Overlooking the 1st fairway, the Dining & Function Room offers access to a sun patio with benches and seats, where you can watch your fellow golfers start there round and take in the marvellous views of the Clwydian Mountain range including Moel Famau with its jubilee tower perched on top. Robert added: “Visitors and visiting Golf Societies are more than welcome to take advantage of our wonderful course and excellent facilities. Our Clubhouse can cater for many different functions ranging from corporate meetings and training days to wedding receptions, anniversaries and birthday parties. We are rightly proud of the fine catering service we provide which ranges from a light bite to a full three course meal and we are happy to discuss individually tailored catering to meet your specific needs, including any special dietary requirements.”

Chosen to receive the 2013 GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR SOUTHERN SCOTLAND
It gives us great pleasure to announce that THORNHILL GOLF CLUB has been chosen as the 2013 winner of the coveted GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR SOUTHERN SCOTLAND. Recognised in the UK and abroad, this independent Award Scheme was created by Golf Yearbook Online in order to recognise those Golf Clubs that are prepared to 'go that extra mile' in not only meeting but exceeding the needs of their members and visitors alike. Thornhill Golf Club was established in 1893, originally as a 9-hole course, being extended to 18 holes in 1979. At 6085 yards, over relatively level terrain consisting of a mixture of park and heath land, the course provides a good test for golfers of all abilities. Often described as a 'hidden gem', the Club's location in the picturesque village of Thornhill in Mid Nithsdale, Dumfries & Galloway in the South West of Scotland, provides players with
magnificent panoramic views, as well as a challenging 18 hole course. So what was it about this well established Club that so impressed the team at Golf Yearbook Online? A key factor in securing this award was undoubtedly the Club's philosophy to extend a warm Scottish welcome to visitors and visiting Golf Societies; all of whom are able to not only test their golf skills on what is acknowledged as one of Scotland's finest golf courses, but also to take advantage of the fine facilities available at the Club. In a recent interview Secretary of the Club Jim Nicholson went on to say: "Visitors and Society Groups are made welcome at Thornhill and we are happy to provide individually tailored packages to suit your specific needs, including quality catering, with special dietary requirements arranged given prior notice."
"We now offer on-site accommodation consisting of a 3-bedroomed bungalow to which can sleep 6/8 people that is ideal for small golfing parties, for which group rates are available. We offer a range of individually tailored packages to suit your specific needs and Societies and Groups are more than welcome to join in our Open Competitions arranged throughout the season." Costing just ÂŁ220 per day, plus FREE golf and 10% discount on all meals and snacks......make your booking today to avoid disappointment! Visit website: www.thornhillgolfclub.co.uk to view the many testimonials this award-winning Club regularly receives from visiting groups and Societies: Thornhill Golf Club is no stranger when it comes to receiving commendations - having been nominated in 2011 by Gateway to Golf Pass golfers as "The Most Friendly Golf Course". Receiving this accolade serves as a distinguishing factor ranking Thornhill Golf Club amongst the best in its field, as well as acting as a seal of approval to members and visitors alike.

Congratulations to MURRAYSHALL HOUSE HOTEL & GOLF COURSE
For Winning Top Award! Recognised both in this country and abroad, The Golf Yearbook Online has created an innovative Award Scheme in order to bring attention to those organisations in the Golfing world that stand out from the crowd by providing a wide range of high quality golf facilities and peerless service. In line with this philosophy, it gives us great pleasure to announce the Judges at The Golf Yearbook Online voted unanimously in favour of The Murrayshall House Hotel & Golf Course at the winner of the SCOTTISH GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013, a totally independent Award Programme. Not every Golf organisation can walk away with one of these accolades, that
have become the hallmark of success, but those that do all emerge from the process more successful; with many having gone on to become acknowledged leaders in the marketplace. Handed down through a succession of aristocratic and high profile owners since first built in 1664, including Lords, Viscounts and leading businessmen, Murrayshall House Hotel & Golf Course has somehow managed to combine it’s rich history with the latest in modern facilities to meet the needs of its 21st Century visitors. The Murrayshall Estate is home to both not one but TWO prestigious but very different 18hole golf courses.......the Murrayshall and Lynedoch, both of which provide a hugely enjoyable challenge for guests and visiting
golfers. Designed by Hamilton J Stutt in the 1600’s the 5868 yard 72-Par Murrayshall course meanders through tree lined fairways and undulating parkland, on which several natural burns have been used to protect the large greens; with white sand bunkers testing the skill of golfers of all abilities. Stutt later returned to design the Lynedoch Course, on which he made great use of the existing natural woodland and wild flower meadows to create a real ‘wee gem’ of a course, as Murrayshall’s Head Professional Alan Reid explained in a recent interview: “Both courses are a real contrast to one another – Murrayshall Championship, the wider, longer course
requires length and accuracy from the tee shot, allowing golfers the opportunity to approach greens from the correct angle and widening the view of the pin. Lynedoch however is shorter but no less a challenge; with tighter fairways, bracken filled gullies and tall Scots Pine trees narrowing the golfer’s view of fairways and greens.” With Murrayshall’s two different golf courses both set out to a fabulous standard of play, it’s little wonder the courses have attracted national and international events over the years. Currently the home to the Paul Lawrie Scottish Schools Championship, Murrayshall and Lynedoch have also hosted PGA events along with SGU National Finals and most recently was the Inaugural Scottish venue for the Sky Sports Trilby Tour. Within short driving distance of the hotel visitors will also find the famous
courses of St Andrews, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and Gleneagles. Murrayshall House Hotel provides a wide range of golf facilities including a Driving Range, well-stocked Golf Shop and professional Golf Tuition Service. Within the Golf Centre, Murrayshall’s team of professionals offer expert lessons to help you improve your swing, pitching or putting game – using both the undercover driving range and both challenging golf courses. Whether you want an individual half hour lesson through to group tuition, Murrayshall’s expert golf teachers can assist golfers at all levels of the game: “We offer tailor made packages for individual requirements - from short game lessons on our chipping and putting green, to long game tuition on the driving range and oncourse game development.” As you would expect from such a qualityconscious organisation buggies, power
caddies and trollies can also be hired. In presenting this Award the Judges were particularly impressed with Murrayshall’s commitment to go that extra mile to ensure guests remember their stay for all the right reasons, as Alan explained: “We pride ourselves in providing a truly customerorientated service to all our guests and have taken steps to ensure visitors really enjoy their time at Murrayshall. For the hard of hearing we can offer an induction loop which can be situated in any of our rooms to assist in amplification of your hearing. There is disabled parking spaces and wheelchair access into the hotel via the West Door at the front of the hotel or by the club entrance. The restaurant, lounge and some bedrooms are all situated on this ground floor level. There are full wheelchair user / disabled toilets on the ground floor. Added to this we currently have one bedroom especially built and equipped with the wheelchair user in mind. Both the Old Masters Restaurant and the Club Restaurant

are pleased to assist those on special diets or with food allergies, e.g. wheat intolerance such as celiac / coeliac disease, nut allergies etc. Please let us know at the time of booking that you will require a special diet, and we will inform the kitchen.” At the end of the day visitors to Murrayshall can relax in one of the Hotel’s superb on-suite Bedrooms, all of which offer comfortable beds with soft duvets, crisp white linen and an array of facilities to make your stay enjoyable. The Hotel also offers a Self Catering Lodge - Murrayshall’s Gate House. Located at the entrance to the main drive, this three bedroom lodge sleeps up to six guests and comprises of one double room, one twin room, one single room, sofa bed in the sitting room area, one bathroom and a fully fitted kitchen. Alan added: “The Lodge house offers you the flexibility and freedom of self catering holiday accommodation, along with the luxury and facilities of a 4 star hotel and surrounding 365 acres of ground, comprising of two 18 hole golf courses, driving
range and practise facilities.” Key to securing this Award was the commitment on the part of Murrayshall to offer a diverse range Special Offers such as the following: • Golf & Roast Offer - Come and play 18 holes at Murrayshall followed by a traditional Roast Platter in the Clubhouse from only £20.00 per person. • Surrounded by two 18 hole golf courses, Murrayshall is a stunning location in which to enjoy a relaxing few days of good food.... excellent golf and luxurious surroundings. Golf Breaks are available from just £100 per person per night, inclusive of accommodation, breakfast, three course dinner in the clubhouse and one round of golf per night stay (based on two people sharing a standard room). With so much on offer to keen golfers of all levels, it’s no surprise that Award-winning Murrayshall House Hotel & Golf Course has become globally renowned as a provider of top quality golfing breaks and golf days out in the historic home of golf. Receiving this accolade serves as a distinguishing factor that ranks The Murrayshall House Hotel & Golf Course amongst the best in its field, as well as acting as a seal of approval to prospective members and visitors alike. PITREAVIE (DUNFERMLINE) GOLF CLUB Under an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and St Andrews, PITREAVIE (DUNFERMLINE) GOLF CLUB is the only course in File to have been designed by the world famous architect Dr Alister MacKenzie. Although born in Yorkshire in 1870, Alister MacKenzie was a great enthusiast of Scottish links and had a considerable effect on Scottish golf. A particular admirer of the Old Course at St Andrews, MacKenzie brought this passion for the ‘Old Lady’ into many of his designs. His other stated objective was to create golf courses that were interesting to play for the ‘average golfer’ as well as the ‘scratch man’. Most famous for designing one of the world’s finest courses at Augusta National in Georgia, home of the US Masters; by the end of his career MacKenzie had laid out some 400 golf courses in England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand and the US. MacKenzie’s influence is clearly evident in the double and triple-tiered greens on Pitreavie’s 18-Hole, par-71 parkland course,
which, since it opened in 1922, has been offering great golf to individuals, groups, visitors, golf societies and corporate clients. In a recent interview Secretary of the Club Malcolm Brown went on to say: “Pitreavie has achieved a reputation for the warm welcome it extends to visitors, all of whom are able to take advantage of our excellent golf facilities and fine hospitality. Depending on the size of your party, discounted rates are also available.”
The Club is rightly proud of its well-stocked Pro Shop, run by PGA Professional Paul Brookes and his assistant. Here you will find an array of high quality golf equipment, accessories and clothing from leading brands such as Titleist, Taylor-Made, Callaway, Ping, Footjoy, Glenmuir, Greg Norman, Mizuno, Adidas, Powakaddy, Under Armour, Stuburt and lots more, all reasonably priced. Paul also offers tuition to beginners through to experienced players who may wish to develop their golf skills.
Pitreavie’s welcoming Clubhouse is the perfect place to relax after your game, and enjoy freshly prepared cuisine made from locally grown produce when available, together with excellent bar facilities. The Clubhouse is also available for private and corporate functions. DUFF HOUSE ROYAL GOLF CLUB Receives Scottish Alister MacKenzie Golf Club of the Year Award
Duff House Royal Golf Course been awarded the title of “Scottish Alister MacKenzie Course of the Year 2013” by Golf Yearbook Online, an independant award programme sponsored by Golf Yearbook Online. The course was designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie one of Scotland’s finest golf course architects. MacKenzie also designed the world famous “Augusta National”, (home of the US Open). On hearing the news, Brian Sutherland, the Club Captain commented, “This is an outstanding achievement, when you consider that Alister MacKenzie designed a number of magnificent Golf courses in Scotland, including The Old Course at St. Andrews and Royal Troon. Both of these renowned courses are venues for The Open Championship and this puts the Duff House Royal award in perspective. Duff House Royal Golf Course is one of Scotland’s premier golf courses. Although a Parkland course, it recently also had the unique distinction of being ranked by ‘National Club Golfer’ in the top 100 Courses in the UK within one mile from the sea. Duff House Royal golf course is a flat, beautifully manicured course with little rough and the large “Mackenzie” two-tiered greens, as well as many well positioned bunkers and trees make the course a pleasant challenge to golfers of all abilities. Why not organise a real treat for yourself or Golf Society by visiting Duff House Royal Golf Club located in Banff, only 45 minutes from Aberdeen and two hours from Inverness along the North East coastline. the years, Duff House Royal Golf Club has achieved an excellent reputation for providing a challenging and outstanding course, with the River Deveron featuring on a number of holes. The Importance of Quality Golf Trophies Trophies, awards and medals are presented in nearly every modern day sport making them a commonplace but sought after item. Receiving a trophy or award represents success, as well as being a memento of private accomplishment. In some sports, but especially golf, the individual does not have to actually have won the competition overall but may have achieved something significant whilst competing, for example, a hole in one.
Golf trophies started with the ‘Champion’s Belt’ in the 1860s that was presented to the British Open winner until that was replaced in 1870 with the ‘Claret Jug’ that is still presented today. The current Masters prize is the ‘Green Jacket’ that is one of the most sought after sporting prizes, not far behind the Tour de France ‘Yellow Jersey’. These are just three examples of golfing prizes but they can come in all shapes, sizes and materials ranging from wood to crystal and gold with most of them being engraved.
Golf trophies have many different and bespoke designs; it is rare to see similar ones. They are designed to give a strong visual impact as well as to add a suitably prestigious note to the occasion. Anything that is a symbol of victory usually makes an impact on those not receiving the award, motivating them towards wanting to win it themselves as well as provoking a note of recognition and appreciation towards the victorious individual. There are many different awards across the wide range of sports played in today’s society but golf trophies are probably some of the most prestigious. The illusive hole in one is
almost always rewarded with a trophy and has become a highly coveted award to receive. Golf trophies add to the gratification of a sport that is seldom conquered and never truly mastered. Warwickshire-based, EFX Corporate Awards & Trophies provide a range of excellent trophies and awards, as well as a personalised engraving service. The company’s reputation for professionalism, quick turnaround times and high quality products was recognised in 2011 when EFX were awarded the Best Rural Family Business Award.
