The well established, well informed company are in touch with the latest textile and fabric innovations to help people that use their products on the front line everyday in threatening scenarios such as terrorist incidents, toxic chemical spills and flash flooding, as well as in conflicts across the world. Remploy’s textile factories have existed from Remploy’s formation in 1946. The company originally made its name producing workwear and uniforms but has since evolved to offer much more and become a leading manufacturer of CBRN protection suits. In the early 80s, Remploy entered into a relationship with the MoD to take on the design and manufacture of CBRN suits; beginning with the original design known as the Mk1 suit which, over the last 30 years, has evolved to the current Mk1va offering. Since the forming of this partnership, Remploy Frontline Textiles have supplied over 3 million CBRN suits to the MoD and today, manufacture from three factories in the UK. Remploy’s Military applications are well recognised within the sector and include the Cougar two piece CBRN Protection Suit; Panther CBRN Coverall, original design Mk1va CBRN Protection suit and the new additions; Kestrel and Falcon CBRN Protection suits and Osprey Military under coverall.
Phoenix suit Remploy Frontline has developed a highly comfortable and highly breathable solution which still protects to levels conforming to NATO guidelines. However it is not our only Military solution. This week will see the launch of the Kestrel CBRN Protection suit which is described as a ‘High Protection, High Comfort’ solution. This garment improves thermal load and breathability substantially without the trade off in protection. The Kestrel and Falcon CBRN suits Launched in March 2013, The Kestrel is also available in a one piece cover all version known as Falcon. At the same time we will launch a highly breathable undergarment for both Military and Civil applications. Currently the company’s most lightweight offering, the Phoenix combat uniform will be joined by two new high protection suits, which will be launched in 2013. Remploy Frontline Textiles have built valuable relationships with global textile manufacturers who are constantly developing new products. This network allows Remploy to keep abreast of the latest market developments from materials to the latest manufacturing techniques, as well as the latest outer and inner fabric/membranes.
The Phoenix CBRN Suit The Phoenix CBRN Protection Suit combines versatile operational CBRN protection technology with functionality within military and civil security services around the world.
The recent economic downturn has seen a reduction in the demand for CBRN suits. However, Remploys’s strong relationships with distributors worldwide ensures a strategic sales pipeline which continues to develop enabling the company to invest in developing lighter, more breathable solutions. Remploy’s goal is to provide the ultimate CBRN protection suit that looks, acts and feels like a standard combat uniform. Although expensive to produce, the production of this revolutionary product would succeed with a sustainable global supply chain.
This suit was developed as Remploy’s lightweight offering to the market. The direction of major procurement initiatives both in the UK and US was for CBRN protective suits to be as comfortable as a

Cintec International
A globally recognised leader in engineering research and development; Cintec is based in Newport, South Wales. Originally trading as Cavity Lock Systems, Cintec International Ltd has formed valuable partnerships and established a global presence through a network of agents with independent companies in Wales, Canada, USA, Australia and India.
In the past, the company have focused on military problems, however, Cintec are expanding the use of the products to other commercial applications for example water storage using air walls and have tested their products in most regions of the world. Although Cintec have found a strategy that works, the company are always looking at new markets and consolidating advances that they have made to date.
The company’s extensive portfolio of clients includes individuals, Local Authorities, Government departments, corporations and Transport Authorities among others.
Providing a complete range of turnkey packages in engineering and contracting, Cintec’s work is evident in three primary areas of expertise: Waterwall Blast Suppression & Isolation providing rapid protection against improvised explosive devices including mitigation of the effect of dirty bombs and a range of products developed for fire and
emergency services Cintec’s revolutionary Waterwall product provides a protective surround which can be used in the controlled explosion of devices and CBRN threats.
The design of Waterwall changes the characteristics of water from being a continuum and a free flowing fluid into a solid wall of water that can be engineered and used as a free standing wall. This use has been patented and Cintec’s clients can be offered water filled structures that are unavailable by any of the company’s competitors. Equally, the unique design and build quality of all Cintec products is second to none. Utilising this, Waterwall refracts the impact of blast, fragmentation and increased pressure to withstand high volumes. Showcased at the G8 in Japan, utilising the Waterwall and its state-of-the-art properties results in limited fragmentation and low blast wave levels when carrying out controlled explosions. Waterwall has undertaken stringent tests within the industry including operation at the FPEG meeting which takes place biannually. The product which can be conveniently transported in a range of vehicles, has also been tested in Jordan under the scrutiny of security agencies and even the King’s private Bodyguards. Cintec offer a range of bespoke adaptations to Waterwall and can tailor the product to meet the specification of various industry uses. For example, a decontaminate can be added for the safe mitigation of CBRN bombs. Waterwall can be used in a number of ways. The product can encase the wheel of a vehicle carrying a potential CBRN threat or used as an A-frame for larger dirty bombs. The product, which is designed, manufactured and supplied by Cintec has been tested and implemented in many of the world’s aircraft, battlefield situations and in partnership with the Royal Navy, in vessels where
ammunition is carried. Waterwall can also be placed by a robot and removed from the site; therefore further reducing the risk to the operator. Another project saw Cintec provide a Terminal at Heathrow International Airport with a variation of Waterwall for use with CBRN threats - utilising robotic technology, the Waterwall could be placed, filled and deployed in smooth operation ensuring minimal disruption. Waterwall has also been used in Afghanistan where non-metal CBRN devices are in place. Waterwall has been used in the controlled explosion of these devices, safeguarding the troops against dirty bombs in the battlefield. Waterwall has recently been used in Munich, Germany for the safe explosion of UXOs with late fuses dating back to World War II. The device was discovered between 4 and 5 metres underground and the decision was taken to commission a Waterwall tank of water, 4 metres high to smother the bomb on its explosion to avoid fragmentation and keep disruption to a minimum. Fire Brigades in the UK have also invested in Waterwall for its flood defence capabilities. The standard Water tank used by Emergency Services features 1.75 metres of water; a lightweight solution which possesses improved constriction properties than traditional sandbags. The inflatable tanks also feature compression fitted joints to avoid leaks. Waterwall can be used within Emergency Services in conjunction with a stateof-the-art fire fighting robot. Waterwall is secured with a quick release coupling to a robot which then deploys, saving time and allowing personnel to carry on with their every day tasks. Cintec also supplied Waterwall tanks to Fire, Search and Rescue agencies in the UK. The 10,000 litre tanks which connect to the main bowser, recycle the water which is used for training and filling purposes meaning no redundancy while fighting a fire. The tank can also be used for fracking processes with a filtration tray set inside the tank’s wall for hard products, dirt etcetera, contained within the recycled water. Anchor & reinforcement of bridges, railway structures and the strengthening of structures to resist earthquakes Cintec stands for Controlled Injection Technology and was formed in 1984 to promote a unique retrofitted anchoring and reinforcement system in the construction industry.

Having successfully anchored over 265 bridges worldwide, Cintec’s reinforcement operations have no detrimental impact on the natural environment and offer 120 year durability. Utilising TRL research and development software, the company strengthen bridges to hold loads of up to 45 tonnes to +/- 15% accuracy. For this valuable work, Cintec have received many environmental awards. The system’s biggest success has been to strengthen existing masonry and brick arches for which Cintec International were awarded the Queens Award for Innovation and Renovation to Historic Structures such as Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, numerous castles and Cathedrals. Other projects where Cintec have utilised their specialist ARCHTEC maintenance software include the restoration of a railway bridge over the River Ganges in India, and the reinforcement of a bridge in the heart of Deli in time for the country’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games. The use of the system has been developed initially to strengthen structures to resist seismic forces but it was soon realised the synergy between this type of

loading particularly the improvised explosive devices used by terrorists with vehicle bombs. A bridge in Denbighshire suffered extensive debris damage due to extensive patterns, divert future flood water and withstand future debris influx. The company’s work here was recognised by an Historic Bridge Award. The company was also commissioned to repair the burial chamber of the Step Pyramid in Cairo following the catastrophic earthquake which hit the city in1992. The Step Pyramid is the oldest over land structure in the world. It’s burial chamber partially collapsed during the earthquake; Cintec used Waterwall technology to provide pneumatic support – protecting the stone work with foam surrounds – whilst re-pointing and implementing anchor support systems in the historic structure. Utilising ARCHTEC software to monitor cracking patterns, Cintec worked to prevent further brick falls to +/-15%accuracy and provided further seismic solutions for fifteen other mosques in and around Cairo. Blastec Blast Mitigation to resist bomb and blast explosion In today’s high security climate and the ever-increasing risk of CBRN attacks, masonry reinforcement is of paramount importance. Cintec uses ARCHTEC software to prevent structural collapse, obtaining valuable information from the mathematical analysis of cracking patterns and fall motions.

The new product range which encompasses Cintec’s anchoring and ARCHTEC software is called Blastec; an extensive testing regime was undertaken into various types of material and wall type of construction to determine the strengthening qualities of the system which included support by the British and United States security forces.
Clients can expect to gain value from Cintec’s experience working in this very special environment with multi applications and knowledge of numerous at risk situations. This coupled with a product that is developed in-house under the total control of highly skilled engineers using the industry best practices and standards, places Cintec at the very forefront of industry.
The first trial of the Blastec range was based on water inside PVC sausage’s 2 metres long and 450mm wide in the form of ovals. This wall needed two days to erect and contained 30 bags that were stacked in rows on on top of the other to produce a wall 2 metres wide and 2 metres high. The test was to prove the effectiveness of water.
“Our products are designed to mitigate the risk that the client anticipates. They are extremely effective against blast waves and fragmentation usually found in an IED and can assist in reducing the foot print of a CBRN device with the correct countermeasures added to the water” explained Cintec’s Managing Director, Peter James.
The test was very successful in that we learnt that water was excellent at absorbing the energy of the blast wave and also to defeat fragmentation but that we needed to be able to harness its deployment and extend its range of possible uses.
Peter directs operations and spent eighteen years in the Naval Reserve specialising in mine countermeasures in the executive branch and retired as a Lieutenant Commander.
Blastec anchoring systems can also be used in conjunction with window systems, resulting in modern day buildings not looking out of date whilst reducing the dangers or blast waves and fragmentation. The product has been used successfully on existing buildings around the world including power stations in the UK as well as on structures managed by Basildon and Watford Housing Associations. Each of Cintec’s products are examined and certified at test licensed or military test sites throughout the world.
“Obviously, as a company, we need to expand progressively using products that are fit for purpose with the correct financial return that allows further research and development to be matched with on-going sales” Peter concluded. ScentLogix™....
2013
The future of scent detection! As part of Polymath Interscience, ScentLogix™ has earned an enviable reputation for its technological innovations in the cross-science area of biological olfaction and scent detection in dealing with issues pertaining to environmental and public health and safety, human ailment detection, social justice, and in preserving the security of the nation, its citizenry and infrastructure, as David Adebimpe, Senior Member of the company’s Administration staff revealed in a recent interview: “ScentLogix™ brand products are driven by our R&D activities in biological olfaction and the convergence of these activities with psychological elements of biological detection such as scent perception, generalization and recognition, and those psychosocial elements embodied within a behaviour-conditioning training processes. Additionally, our in-house expertise in chemistry, statistics, philosophy and applied computing is applied towards the design and fabrication of sensory arrays, logic, and pattern recognition systems for those emerging electronic detection platforms and for cross-instrumentation and multi-platform data fusion processes.” The company’s “convergent science” approach uses the olfactory prowess of canines as the underpinnings to its foundational R&D investigations into biological olfaction and olfaction-based detection; David added: “This is because of the easy accessibility to K9’s, their search-and-detect superiority over advanced detector machines that use the same principles of vapor sampling for detection, an academic understanding of some of the workings of their olfactory processes, and the fact that search-and-detect K9 training is a proven, and established, activity.” Acknowledged as the world’s No.1 provider of non-detonable and non-narcotic scents for odour evaluation and training programs, ScentLogix™ has set a new gold standard for non-hazardous explosives and narcotics detection. It has been able to achieve this through its innovative range of ScentKits which include: • Scentlogix-K9 • Machine Detection: - For Explosives and For Narcotics David told us: “We maintain a brand-technology, processing, quality control and post-sales support protocol of high standards to ensure
that our clients will experience consistent success with the use of ScentLogix™ products in both R&D and operational settings.” Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn the company regularly receives testimonials from satisfied clients, such as the one below: Hello David, I am writing to express my delight at my company Celtic K9 Security being the first company/organisation to be approved to use your products in the United Kingdom. After speaking to a few well known

trainers in the U.S.A. and receiving nothing but positives about your products I decided the only thing to do was try them myself. I am so pleased with the products even right down to the way they are packed and the support and advice from David over the phone. Your products are great! I will use nothing but Scentlogix™ products in the future for training my Detection Dogs. I am not using the products because I don’t have access to live scents, I am Home Office licensed to carry live drugs for the purpose of dog training, the reason I use them is because they are better to train with than the “real stuff”. We are only allowed small amounts of live drugs for training purposes and this poses problems if we conduct a search where large amounts are present, this will not pose a problem for any dogs trained by Celtic K9 Security from now on as Scentlogix™ products will not only allow the dog to give a good positive indication at source for small amounts, but also larger, more substantial amounts too. I am soon to be ordering Scentlogix™ Explosive products to be used for the training of Explosive Detection Dogs, by using these products it allow us to carry out real-life training scenarios without endangering the public, whether it be drugs or explosives. I am proud to be associated with Scentlogix™ products and consider David Adebimpe to be a friend on the other end of the phone should I need advice, I am positive that by using Scentlogix™ products the reputation of Celtic K9 Security trained dogs will grow and grow. I look forward to a long and successful partnership with Scentlogix™ and recommend their products to anyone helping in the fight against drugs and terrorism.” Roger Wooldridge, Celtic K9 Security - 02/09/2010 As part of the company’s continual commitment to expand and develop the range of services it provides, ScentLogix™ can now be used by other creatures and terrains as a means of detecting Explosives and Narcotics.
2013
The ScentLogix™ K9 ScentKit for Explosives and Narcotics Detection provides such a broadband scent signature of primary odor components that it is also appropriate for the training of other terrestrial creatures with good olfactory sensitivity and search-and-detect-capability. Such creatures can include those with olfactory configurations comparable to K9’s - such as beavers, to those with completely different olfactory configurations - such as bees. It can also be applied towards the training of aquatic creatures innately endowed with superb olfactory capabilities, in the detection of chemicals within water. ScentLogix™ K9 ScentKit for Explosives and Narcotics Detection can also be configured for training aquatic creatures with search-and-detect potentials such as the catfish, great white shark, and dolphins, to detect the presence of chemical materials present within water bodies. Such chemicals might range from explosives to chemical pollutants…even shipwrecks. David concluded: “Our products are available to buy securely online, however it should be noted that our flagship products may require you to provide an official request letter outlining your identity and the specific use of the product. Typically, orders will be accepted from Accredited Dog Trainers, Training Centers, K9 Units, Academic & Research Institutions, Law enforcement as well as Governmental Agencies Worldwide.”

A forward thinking company, backed by highly experienced staff and modern support services, Barrier Components has built up an impressive reputation, since its inception 26 years ago, as a leading supplier of Architectural Hardware. In a recent interview Graham Walker Joint Managing Director of Barrier Components told this reporter: “In order to maintain our leading position in the marketplace, we strive to re-invent the company on a regular basis, thereby enabling us to not only offer our loyal customers the latest cutting edge products available but also expand our client base to cover new areas of the marketplace.” A perfect example of this is evident in the latest innovative products to be launched by the company aimed at the Counter Terrorism Sector, namely a revolutionary new Blast Enhanced System for Glass Facades and a New High Security Gate System.
“Security has definitely become a ‘buzz’ word in both our home and work environments,” Graham added, “Whether it’s an office, cinema, airport or hotel....there’s never been a more important time to ensure people are safe and secure.” In line with this philosophy, Barrier Components in partnership with Sadev of France are offering a New Blast Enhanced System - consisting of a stainless steel (316) bolt fixed system suitable for use in point-fixed glass facades. The company offers two systems suitable for single glazing and an insulated glazed unit; both of which have been tested to EXV 25 at a Government approved Test Centre and have performed to a hazard rating of ‘C’ - minimal hazard. The first of its’ kind, the new High Security Gate System developed in partnership with FAC of Italy is an aesthetically attractive, tracked cantilever Gate System, with patent pending.

Mitigating Vehicle Risk Vehicle mitigation systems are hugely important in the drive to provide more secure operational environments across a wide range of industries. We report on the revolutionary Redi-Rock system. Building security is high on the agenda for businesses working in environments where disruption by vehicle assault, or accident, has the potential to cause loss of secure data and have a detrimental impact on national security. However, these solutions are also desirable for businesses working in the financial service sector where threats from vandalism or criminal behaviour are all too common. Established in 2004, CPM Group is a specialist pre-cast concrete manufacturer, which employs in excess of 200 staff at manufacturing sites nationwide, including facilities in Somerset, Yorkshire and Scotland. The company is a market leader in the design, manufacture and supply of concrete products to a broad range of customers operating in a variety of sectors, including construction, financial services, water and waste management, rail and environmental. It is also the only UK licensed partner of the innovative Redi-Rock vehicle mitigation solution
Once constructed, Redi-Rock walls are able to withstand the impact of a 7.5 tonne truck, providing a secure barrier system for at risk buildings. Durability has further been enhanced by the addition of a horizontal wire that runs through the core of the wall, which means that each Redi-Rock wall works as a complete system, with a combined absorption effect. A supremely flexible solution, Redi-Rock is also being used as a niche space saving solution for the retention of earth for a wide range of retaining, force protection, landscaping and flood prevention and protection applications. The big block is available in three natural stone finishes including Limestone, Cobblestone and the recently launched Ledgstone finish. Aside Redi-Rock, CPM Group continues to broaden its expertise producing high quality reinforced bespoke precast panels and L-shaped retaining walls, based on clients’ individual requirements. The company uses inhouse design expertise, with a focus on aesthetics. This allows the implementation of key client specifications based on landscape and attention is given to building symmetries, to ensure a solution matches all requirements.

PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
T
hroughout the year, the Directors at the Security Industry E-Mag select facility management companies that have best demonstrated a proven ability to go that extra mile in not only meeting but exceeding the needs of their clients. Therefore, in line with this philosophy, it gives us pleasure to announce that Skanska has been selected to receive the AWARD FOR BEST ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE CONSTRUCTION AND MANAGEMENT COMPANY OF THE YEAR 2012. The Award Scheme was created in order to recognise those businesses and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their particular field. The Security Industry E-Mag is always keen to bring attention to those who are providing a product or service that stands out from the crowd and deserves to be appreciated not only by its readers, but also by a wider audience. Commenting on receiving this accolade Jon Chown, Director of Facilities Services at Skanska said:
“It is fantastic to once again be recognised as a company that is at the forefront in terms of thinking green and delivering projects that challenge conventional standards and traditional views of what is possible.” Skanska’s integrated facilities management operating unit provides a wide range of services from a strategically located network of regional offices across the United Kingdom. Jon Chown works with a dedicated team of nearly 700 members of staff who provide facility services to a tapestry of sectors in the private and public spheres, including residential, governmental, commercial, healthcare, education and defence departments. Skanska offers extensive facilities management solutions which include 24/7 help desk cover, M&E and public health services, critical-environment management, emergency management, office cleaning and waste management, as well as grounds maintenance and landscaping: details of which are available at www.skanska.co.uk. Working in association with clients, company partners and their supply chain, Skanska’s approach to sustainability has made a real difference to the delivery of projects. Proven leadership in green construction, health and safety and business ethics – have made Skanska an innovative UK name. So much so that in 2011 it was named the Greenest Company in the UK across all industries in The Sunday Times ‘Best Green Companies’ Awards. Its commitment to core values through its five zeros puts other companies in the shade: zero loss making projects, zero accidents, zero environmental incidents, zero ethical breaches and

zero defects. The appointment of an independent special advisor – Tony Juniper – also shows how seriously this leading company takes its sustainability pledge to its customers and business partners. Tony has reviewed the overall Skanska UK strategy to 2015 as well as inspiring staff at conferences and helping to ‘green’ Skanska’s bids. Part of Skanska’s strategy for meeting operational and financial targets is to enhance green expertise. This it is achieving in leaps and bounds, particularly when you peruse recent projects. One particular case is Hollywood House – an office block in central Woking that was redeveloped and modernised in 2011 into a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum building - the highest ever score in the UK for an office fit-out. It incorporates energy efficient features, such as - solar water heating, rainwater harvesting, optimised power supply and low-energy lighting. Most recently, its work on Brent Civic Centre saw this development become the UK’s greenest public building when it gained an ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM Interim Certificate – Design Stage, a significant environmental milestone. Look at all the company’s green achievements by visiting http://www.skanska.co.uk/projects. Skanska’s Green Initiative is a reality! They said: ‘more than half of the Earth’s population lives in an urban environment. With urbanisation comes extensive demands for natural resources, which means there’s a need for new ways of thinking and working. We have to change society. The most important thoughts and ideas on building a green society are described in the book ‘Green Thinking’. We hope it will provide inspiration and new ideas, since it shows that so much can be done already today. The book contains a lot of green solutions, as well as the experience and knowledge gained from 21 projects from three continents.’ The book can be ordered online and makes for very inspirational reading with a pragmatic edge that is associated with Skanska across the world. The Swedish company has a right to be proud of its achievements … Receiving this accolade serves as a distinguishing factor that ranks Skanska amongst the best in its field, as well as acting as a seal of approval for prospective clients. 6 Alpha Associates
6 Alpha Associates are experts in people and processes; buildings and facilities and network systems. The majority of 6 Alpha’s work is within the construction industry (75%) with a further 25% being undertaken in offshore projects.
After monitoring these operations and how they are working and as part of the assessment and management process; 6 Alpha provide a variety of hard-stop mechanisms including barriers, blockers, locks and cameras.
Since it’s inception, the group have built an enviable reputation amongst competitors for the provision of first class, professional security/risk consulting services for clients within built-up environments. 6 Alpha consult with businesses from theme parks to hotels, skyscrapers and iconic locations across the world in high value, important locations such as Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York and London in the UK. All of these areas could potentially be targeted by terroists; 6 Alpha assess the chemical, biological and radiologicial vulnerabilities of these sites prior to providing them with a strategic management plan which significantly reduces the risks that they face.
As well as reducing the risk of terroist attack, 6 Alpha Associates hold the expertise and experience to combat other perils that a client may face, such as fire, flood, power-outs and pandemic flu among other extenuating circumstances.
The group’s static capabilities follow an alarm response principle and reduce the risks faced by clients to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) solution criteria. Whilst encouraing and instilling a proactive response to business resilience in the terroist arena; 6 Alpha were also asked to focus on wider range of protection models which could be incorporated in to builtup environments.
2012
The group’s other area of work focuses on the offshore renewable energy sector; providing a risk assessment and management solution for unexploded ordance (UXO) from World War II and the risk faced by companies, designers and contractors operating in UK and European waters. Wind Energy 6 Alpha Associates provide a range of risk assessment services for the wind energy industry in line with unexploded ordance (UXO). An independent, specialist risk management consultancy practice; 6 Alpha have managed UXO risk for more than 30 renewable energy developments in UK and European waters through a range of consultancy and risk management services.
UXO provides a significant obstacle to offshore wind farm developments. The First and Second World Wars left a legacy of unexploded ordance (UXO) through sea mines, torpedoes, high explosive (HE) bombs, depth charges and other munitions which were utilised at sea during both wars. A large quantity of these UXO remain on the sea bed and recent estimates suggest that 30% of WWII sea mines have not yet been recovered, therefore resulting in a significant threat to the marine environment. As a legal duty, offshore companies are required to provide designers and contractors with project-specific health and safety information identifying the hazards and risks associated with offshore design and construction work. The possibility of encountering UXO falls in the category of potential significant risk and should be addressed as early as possible in the lifecycle of a project. Implementing risk mitigation is vitally important to offshore companies. Measuring risk to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) is an industry standard and legel requirement which effectively prevents unexpected delays and litigation should an incident occur. The services that 6 Alpha provide UXO risk mitigation measures in offshore renewable environments include: • • • • •
UXO Threat & Risk Assessments Geographical Survey for UXO ROV & Diver Target Investigation & Removal Operational Risk Management Plans Toolbox Briefs
6 Alpha have also successfully assessed and managed UXO and wider risks such as terrorist attack within a variety of up-stream oil and gas
projects. The group are directly and indirectly engaged in projects within oil-rich countries including Saudi Arabia, Libya and Algeria. In this area, 6 Alpha assess a range of unconventional project risks and project manage their implementation. The strength and importance of 6 Alpha’s services were highlighted in the recent Crossrail technical papers competition 2012 within which the group were highly commended under the Crossrail UXO Risk Assessment (pre-empting Best Practice) programme. Presented on 25th January 2013, 6 Alpha’s Managing Director, Simon Cooke attended the awards ceremony at Canary Wharf. 47 companies submitted papers to the awards programme, of which 22 were selected for review by the awards committee. Following this 5 company proposals were shortlisted – 6 Alpha Associates were one of these 5. Although runners up in the competition, 6 Alpha’s contribution to the prestigious awards programme has seen the group recognised at the highest level having been considered for one of the biggest construction projects to take place in Western Europe. Within the civil engineering sector; 6 Alpha Associates work within a four phase process outlined in CIRIA’s Health & Safety Executive endorsed publication: ‘A Client’s Guide to UXO Contaminated Sites’; a document which 6 Alpha are technical authors of. attempting to analyse away from the scene. It also allows the agent to be separated from the explosive through the same penetration making disposal simpler.
Since MMIC EOD’s state-of-the-art device extracts a sample it allows an analysis of the contents at the molecular level. Non-invasive techniques, such as Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) provides information on elemental composition but no direct evidence of chemical structure. Only an actual ‘physical sample’ gives a 100% reliable result on which to base threat assessments and render safe procedures. The device’s drilling head is easily attached to the target, regardless of diameter, and without the need for surface preparation. It can be set up by a two-man-team within five minutes and requires little training to operate. Deployed from a single small vehicle, Monica is used to analyse/sample aircraft bombs, artillery projectiles, mortar rounds, rocket warheads as well as improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Monica is used by many major organisations at risk of conventional and improvised CBW threats. With robust properties and simple transportation needs, the device can be used in a variety of scenarios such as protecting against threats to major infrastructure providers to use within ongoing global conflicts.
The Midas CBRN hand held sampling system has been designed as an alternative to the Monica system. The lightweight and compact device can be used as a portable solution for sampling from a range of targets including some munitions, storage drums and other containers whilst not exposing the operator to the contents of the target.

Operated manually using a standard cordless drill, once Midas has breached the target it is automatically sealed and a sample of the contents taken. Midas’ simple, safe, leak-free approach is particularly effective for the sampling of suspected chemical warfare (CW) agents and toxic industrial chemicals (TICs). Once access to the target is complete, a sample can be taken using the MMIC Mk3 syringe, which clips on to Midas and is equipped with drip flat couplers to prevent contamination. Using the Midas system in combination with simple hand held analysis equipment allows identification within just a few minutes.

PRC Associates Europe Limited Leaders in global security PRC Associates Europe Limited have established themselves at the forefront of networking and deal in all global security and risk management issues. Since 9/11, security has become a key component to the planning of an event or project. The development of a comprehensive security network of companies working together within the private sector has been a key advancement; introducing clients to companies that can help – ultimately preventing rejections and side tracking. This networking process has been implemented across the world, providing Governments and organisations with a portfolio of security specialists with expertise in different areas of the industry. Prior to the terrorist attacks it is evident that there was a severe lack of communication. PRC Associates provide professional, reliable and confidential security services (PRC) globally. With Headquarters in London, the company has been established for five years and was founded on the valuable principles of the security sector and over 40 years combined experience within the security industry, working with/for national and international Government in most cases. Comprising a dedicated team of seasoned professionals from the Special Forces, intelligence, Business and Government sectors, each with experience of working at highest levels; PRC Associates accommodate a broad spectrum of customers needs with their unrivalled knowledge of the industry - achieving the client’s objectives in a safe and secure environment whilst providing them with the utmost confidentiality, trust and undivided loyalty throughout. The firm provide short term and long term security solutions; intelligence, electronic monitoring, logistics & tracking and other traditional security measures such as convoy security, guard-force management, training and VIP protection. Since their inception, PRC Associates have explored many avenues. PRC Associates was conceptualized after 9/11 but at time of Iraq intervention it became operational. Since PRC has established a permanent presence in the Middle East, following liaisons with Governments, Police, Military and Law Enforcement Communities and is developing a steady but sure expansion programs into KSA, Oman, Pakistan and Libya. PRC is very much involved in training and equipping several African countries Intelligence Apparatus, Special Forces, Anti-Terror Teams, Emergency Response Units, Maritime and Borders Control Systems and developing their Urban Surveillance Capabilities. Neglected by the West as a resource continent, recent tools like the Internet mean that inhabitants could now see how behind the times they were and how their human rights are infringed by power hungry Governments and militant leaders – a realisation which has led to the increased possibility of political unrest which has taken place in recent times.
2013
Chinese, Russian, Israeli and Indian organisations had already made the move into the continent leaving their Western counterparts lagging behind. Many manufacturers have begun outsourcing to Africa similar to operations already established in India, Taiwan and China where labour is cheaper. With the influx of these incoming business opportunities, the need for security is greater than ever with increased risk from terrorism and opportunist crime. Money laundering is also booming in north Africa through trade relations that have been established with gulf estates; as are Mafia operations which have seen the transition from street-based crimes such as muggings and prostitution to business-style scams. Companies had already moved in to claim parts of the security industry in Africa so it was time for European firms and in particular UK organisations to act so as not to lose out again. The bonanza of business activity and increased tourism in Africa came at a greater risk of terrorism meaning that improvements in security were needed. PRC Associates have been very successful in securing the stability of the African security sector, and establishing contracts with high level clients with the safety of the population paramount significance. Working for Government and industry clients, the firm developed to offer more advanced security systems in Africa before the world’s influx - a step ahead of the opposition as opposed to the security industry in Iraq. Africa is a split-continent. It comprises countries that are financially sufficient due to the oil and gas which can be found underground and those countries that have little or no money for essential things. Many West African states suffer from low tourism and, as a result encounter security issues such as kidnapping for monetary ransoms; whereas, other richer countries have the funding due to afford security.
...the company has been established for five years and was founded on the valuable principles of the security sector and over 40 years combined experience within the security industry, working with/for national and international Government in most cases. PRC Associates work in Africa does not end within the security sector. Many religious confrontations take place in the continent with Christians and Muslims divided in some states. PRC Associates are in the process of organising a seminar in Nigeria with the aim of achieving 30-50 delegates in one room from neighbouring countries and technology experts to try and convince suppliers to work with the poorer African countries. It has bee difficult to educate officials in the need for security. Some African states are set in Colonial times and have a laid back attitude to security measures. The continent cannot continue to grow without advancements in security; the seminars and presentations taking place in Nigeria, Niger, Chad are accredited by the Pan-African Parliament and aim to send a strong message to the whole of Africa in 2013. PRC Associates also work in Middle East, South East Asia, and South America as well as providing security for European oil companies’ diplomatic trips to Africa; and security training camps in Europe due to the firearms restrictions in place in England.

PRC in the UK As a UK-based firm, PRC Associates Europe Limited strive to promote the value of a security company to corporations. In recent times, a common trend has been to use security companies like PRC, as a post-crisis requirement after problems have already occurred or a security infringement has been made! This highly Impractical method was fine years ago when the threat to security was at a minimum but is not a viable strategy in this time and age. PRC Associates Managing Director, Behrooz Nezhad believes that ‘every organisation should retain a reputable security company as part of their advisory team.’
...PRC Associates accommodate a broad spectrum of customers needs with their unrivalled knowledge of the industry - achieving the client’s objectives in a safe and secure environment whilst providing them with the utmost confidentiality, trust and undivided loyalty throughout. ‘By no means should there be a Government or multi national organisation without a security advisor in today’s climate’. Utilising professionals from a pool of ex Special Forces and industry-based personnel from across Europe, PRC Associates provide preventative measures of security rather than curative measures and promote an attitude for change which hopefully in turn, will open the eyes of overseas companies. Formerly known as Charcoal Cloth International, Durham-based Chemviron Carbon Cloth Division is acknowledged as the world’s leading manufacturer of Zorflex® 100% Activated Carbon Cloth. Originally developed by the British Ministry of Defence for use in chemical warfare suits, today Zorflex® has many more applications including situations where there is a high humidity, as its adsorption capacity is less adversely affected by moisture. In a recent interview, Bob Brown, General Manager, outlined what makes Zorflex® so unique: “Unlike many other materials which contain a percentage of carbon, Zorflex® is made from 100% activated carbon, making it more effective at adsorbing a large volume of organic or inorganic molecules from various gases and liquids. Whilst activated carbons generally have a vast network of pores of varying sizes, Zorflex® boasts a microporous structure which results in rapid adsorption kinetics and the capability to adsorb to a higher level of purity.” “Due to its microporous structure, Zorflex® has an extremely large surface area. To put its capabilities into perspective, just 1g of Zorflex® has the surface area of over half the size of a football pitch. This, combined with the strong electrostatic forces within the cloth, enables the cloth to be highly efficient at adsorbing both liquids and gases.”
2013
In presenting this Award, the Judges were particularly impressed with the fact that Zorflex® can not only be custom-manufactured to comprise a mesoporous structure to adsorb larger molecules if required. But that it also offers the most effective protection on the market today. With low physiological burden at low carbon weights, Zorflex® is used in the Defence Sector where protection to a wide range of chemical, biological or nuclear agents is required, e.g. in protective clothing, filters and decontamination wipes, as well as for medical wound dressings for military use and missile decoy due to the thermal heat properties of the carbon cloth. Zorflex® is used for the following Defence applications: • CBRN protective clothing • First responder • Escape masks • CBRN filtration media • Decontamination wipes • Missile decoy media • Medical countermeasures • Electrodes and super capacitors Bob added:”Whilst Zorflex® itself is black, you can add a laminate liner textile which can be any colour you want - although black is the most popular choice. Having said that, we supply Zorflex® for use by various
Special Forces which is required to be black on the inside and grey on the outside. The grey fabric having had an additional treatment added.” Zorflex® uses the latest cutting-edge filter technology for clothing, compared to other materials, such as embedded carbon and carbon fixed. These materials support media or membrane technologies which, in comparison to Zorflex®, can be uncomfortable and less effective. Zorflex® can be custom-made specifically for the NBC clothing market as its properties include being: • Sweat resistant (therefore suitable for hot/desert environments) • Repellent against liquid agent • Flame retardant • Antimicrobial • Lightweight • Breathable • Extremely comfortable Key to the company’s continued success is its commitment to provide the world’s highest quality CBRN material. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn Chemviron Carbon Cloth Division has had to significantly boost its capacity, including having invested in additional equipment in the Durham, UK facility, (operational as of September 2013) to enable the production of 1.5m-wide cloth specifically for the Defence clothing market.
Receiving the MATERIAL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT AWARD 2013 is a milestone for Chemviron Carbon Cloth Division. It is a testimony to the company’s success and an objective seal of approval to prospective clients. Commenting on receiving this accolade, Bob went on to say: “We are delighted to have been selected by Security Industry E-Mag as winners of the Material Design & Development Award 2013. We are grateful to our customers in the international defence and security sectors for their support and are committed to continuous development of Zorflex® solutions to meet their exacting needs in the years ahead.” Zorflex® starts life as a viscose rayon textile, from which the company converts the rayon to carbon using a proprietary continuous furnace process at temperatures up to 1000 deg C, creating a 100% carbon material which is available in woven and knitted formats. Zorflex® can also be tailored to customers’ requirements by various activity levels, weights and thicknesses. In addition to this, value added composites can be created by laminating the cloth to other materials or impregnating the cloth with chemical treatments.

Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicle family
Jaguar Land Rover’s range of armoured vehicle solutions covers a spectrum of requirements that cannot be matched by any other original equipment manufacturer. They cover needs that range from head-of-state level to those of key workers operating in hostile environments. Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicle range comprises four models: the XJ Sentinel, Range Rover Sentinel, Discovery Sentinel and Defender. In their standard soft-skinned versions each has forged an enviable reputation for style, performance, refinement and reliability. Other OEMs may have luxury vehicles, or SUVs, or full off-roaders, but only Jaguar Land Rover has the expertise in all these areas to offer a seamless range of armoured vehicle solutions to match any requirement. Jaguar Land Rover has created these vehicles through exhaustive development to offer levels of protection equal to or exceeding those of the
2012
competition, and which are fully tested and certificated to internationally recognised standards. At the same time, the legendary comfort and driveability offered by Jaguar Land Rover’s soft-skinned vehicles has been maintained, while the armoured vehicles have been designed so that they are virtually indistinguishable from the standard models. XJ Sentinel Leading the Jaguar Land Rover armoured range is the XJ Sentinel limousine. Jaguar Land Rover leveraged its considerable experience in the armoured vehicle arena to produce a version of the long wheelbase XJ Portfolio that is tailored for use by heads-of-state and high-ranking ministers, in scenarios where it is the VVIP that drives the risk. XJ Sentinel is heavily armoured, offering certificated ballistic protection to the B7 level (B7- for the armoured glass), and blast protection against the equivalent of 15 kg TNT detonated close to the vehicle. The
suspension has been uprated to cater for the additional weight of the armour, and inside the vehicle retains the standard level of luxury that provides the rear-seat occupants with a full metre of legroom, and a range of options. One major advantage of the XJ Sentinel is that it offers an exceptional 500-kilogram payload, more than sufficient for four occupants and their luggage, and any additional security equipment that may be required. Range Rover Sentinel Based on the Vogue model, the Range Rover Sentinel SUV is aimed at a variety of customers, such as state government and ambassadors, and for VVIPs requiring a level of rough-road capability. In terms of protection the Range Rover is certificated to B6+ level against ballistic threats, offers side protection against 15-kg TNT blasts, and underfloor protection that can withstand grenade attacks. As with the other members of the Jaguar Land Rover armoured range, the Range Rover Sentinel has run-flat tyres complete with warning system (where local legislation allows) and incorporates many of the advanced systems of the soft-skinned vehicle. It has a number of security options available, also appli2.2-litre diesel powertrain for Defender

cable to other members of the range, such as anti-tamper exhaust, opening driver’s window, vision assist and intercom. An auxiliary battery is fitted to provide additional power for specialist equipment such as communications, and there are options for covert headlight flash, blue lights and sirens, and under-bonnet fire suppression. The vehicle was re-tested to EC whole vehicle type approved (ECWVTA) and has improved GVW which creates a payload increase of 455kg. Discovery Sentinel Jaguar Land Rover is the only OEM to offer a fully certificated armoured vehicle that has off-road capability in the shape of the Discovery Sentinel. Based on the Discovery SE, the armoured model provides the same B6 levels of protection as the Range Rover Sentinel. It is offered with both short and long armoured cells, the latter featuring armour that projects into the cargo bay at the rear. Armoured Discovery is aimed at two principal markets: VIP protection and as a support vehicle. In the former it offers a cost-effective vehicle for ambassadors or similar, while its offroad capability allows it to provide protected transport when VIPs visit areas where roads are in a poor state or are non-existent. In its second role the Armoured Discovery is proposed as a perfect platform for police and security organisations operating in the VIP support role, using the discreet Discovery to escort the primary vehicle. The cabin of the Discovery can be configured to meet a variety of needs, with options covering different seating options, additional power harnesses and the ability to mount special equipment. Combined with the 500-kilogram payload available in the short-cell version and additional battery option, this versatility allows it to carry a range of support equipment, such as communications and medical kit. In the short-cell version the vehicle can be fitted with an escape hatch in the rear of the cell, allowing occupants to
Armoured Defender With over two million vehicles produced and six decades of experience, nothing comes close to the legendary Defender when it comes to taking on, and beating, some of the toughest offroad terrain. Unlike many of its competitors, the Defender has permanent four-wheel drive with the centre differential distributing torque evenly between the front and rear axles to give optimum all-weather performance on and off-road. In conjunction with a Land Rover Approved Vehicle Modifier (AVM), Jaguar Land Rover has now introduced a fully factory-approved Armoured Defender, certificated to B6 standard and with underfloor grenade protection. The armour kit works within the normal payload parameters of the standard Defender, but still allows the vehicle to carry up to seven passengers, a capability unmatched by any competitor at its price level. The Armoured Defender is aimed mainly at organisations such as NGOs and oil/mining companies that operate in harsh environments with potential security risks. In 2011 the baseline Defender underwent a significant update, at the heart of which is the installation of a 2.2-litre Ford Puma diesel engine. Although the new engine is smaller in capacity than the previous 2.4-litre unit, it is able to maintain the power and torque attributes that are key to the Defender’s industry-leading performance, as well as boosting maximum speed from 132 to 145 km/h. Adoption of the new engine allows the Defender to fully comply with Euro Level 5 emission regulations for N1 class vehicles, which come into force in 2012. To meet these requirements the powertrain incorporates a diesel particulate filter, with both passive and active regeneration technology, to greatly reduce soot levels. Speed limiter options are now available (at 90, 113 and 120 km/h) that can be set in the factory but removed in service at a later date if required. This facility is aimed at fleets looking to control fuel economy and promote safety. Also new are further options for trim and interior.

Armoured protection
Comprehensive approach Jaguar Land Rover’s comprehensive design and development approach to its armoured vehicles offers significant benefits to the customers. By using a globally-renowned armour expert and clever design, the Jaguar Land Rover armoured cell provides better all-round protection than many of its rivals. The steel cell itself requires several welds that, if not executed properly, can compromise the overall protection offered. Jaguar Land Rover, Centigon and RMA employ advanced technologies and highly-skilled technicians to help ensure that every weld maintains the total integrity of the cell. Jaguar Land Rover has examined in detail every potential weak-spot of the armoured cell, and designed in elements to help overcome any possible degradation in protection. Any gaps in the cell envelope, such as those caused by doors, are carefully engineered to a minimum size, and protected by overlapping armoured segments to help maintain overall protection. Fuel tanks are self-sealing or armoured. In terms of certification this means
that Jaguar Land Rover armoured vehicles can be validated to protection levels as a vehicle in its entirety. Other vehicle armourers may be able to offer components that meet the stipulated requirements, but the vehicle as a whole may fail due to weakspots, and large and inadequately protected gaps, due to their inability to engineer to certification standard. Multi-threat protection Traditionally vehicle armourers have concerned themselves only with the ballistic threat posed by small arms, but in today’s world other threats have become more prevalent. As well as the ability to help protect occupants against standard rounds from pistols or rifles, Jaguar Land Rover vehicles offer protection against other weapons, including armour-piercing rounds. Additionally, in recognition of a growth in roadside IEDs and suicidetype attacks, the Jaguar Land Rover armoured range incorporates sideblast protection, and an armoured floorpan designed to resist grenade attacks. Together these features provide enhanced security and reassurance for the occupants.
Independent testing All of Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles are subjected to exhaustive tests by independent agencies, to provide internationally-recognised certification. In terms of protection the vehicles are certificated by QinetiQ, the UK defence technology and security company that grew out of the UK’s Defence Evaluation and Research Agency. As such, QinetiQ is globally respected as an organisation with unmatched experience in the testing and validation of products, systems and new technologies, and in verifying their compliance with standards and regulations. In order to gain international certification, vehiclesmust be subjected to a variety of ballistic and blast tests, including those aimed at any perceived weakspots. The results for Jaguar Land Rover vehicles meet the UK’s B6 level (roughly equivalent to the European VR7 standard) for the Range Rover, Discovery and Defender, and B7 level in the case of the XJ Sentinel. In addition to protection tests, Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles have also been scrutinised in terms of performance and driving dynamics by a number of government test agencies, and have met or exceeded the most stringent requirements.

Engineering without compromise
Jaguar Land Rover’s approach to the armouring of its range has produced a family of fully certificated, fully engineered vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover’s factoryapproved vehicles are considered as true armoured vehicles, whereas the products of some competitors could be described as vehicles that are armoured. In today’s uncertain world the protection of VVIPs and key personnel is increasingly important. Jaguar Land Rover recognises this with its armoured range, which has been engineered to meet not only the highest levels of security, but also to maintain the superior handling necessary to help avoid the vehicle itself becoming a danger to its occupants.
2012
A vehicle that is armoured… Imagine the scenario: an assassination attempt has been foiled by a vehicle’s armour protection. The driver’s first instinct is to whisk his important passengers away from the scene as fast as possible. As the car speeds away the driver turns the wheel to take a bend, but the car flips over and rolls. The VIPs may have
survived a potential assassin’s bullets, but not the crash that followed. Sadly, that scenario is all too possible when travelling in a car that has not been fully engineered to take into account the extra weight and effects of armouring. …or a true armoured vehicle By contrast, Jaguar Land Rover’s vehicles have been developed, recalibrated, tweaked and teased though hours of testing and retesting to ensure that they exhibit similar road-holding, agility and poise enjoyed by their soft-skinned counterparts. Jaguar Land Rover has engineered
Engineering without compromise
every last detail of its armoured vehicles to take into account the effects of armour. To offset the effect of the additional weight of armour protection on vehicle performance, air springs and anti-rollbars are uprated, and dampers are tuned to optimise ride and handling. Heavy-duty Alcon disc brakes with multi-pot callipers are also fitted, while stability control system software has been designed to help keep the driver protected under a multitude of driving conditions. The vehicle’s many electronic control units are optimised to take into account any extra burden placed on their functions by differing weights and systems. The application of these measures helps the vehicle to be as stable as its soft-skinned counterpart.
Stringent testing All aspects of the vehicles’s structure, dynamics and performance are thoroughly tested in its armoured configuration, particularly with regard to some of the occupational hazards that the vehicle may encounter, such as the need to ram other vehicles or obstructions that may hinder a safe escape from a hazardous situation. A full series of crash tests has been undertaken with the armoured vehicles to help ensure that such impacts can be absorbed adequately by the structure, especially with regard to the integrity of the armoured cell, and the adequacy of the front crumple zone to absorb impact forces. Vehicles are repeatedly driven at high speed into kerbs, and are subjected to a rigorous series of maximum-effort brake tests to ensure that there is no brake-fade through repeated violent application. Bespoke engineering All Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles are produced to match the exact specifications of the customer. These not only include operational requirements, such as the provision of various driving options or specialised communications equipment, but also reflect local regulations and infrastructure. For instance, radios can be calibrated to offer nationally-specific frequency bands, while some countries do not
allow tyre pressure monitoring systems as they interfere with other communications. Armoured Sales is a separate division within the Jaguar Land Rover business, and is dedicated to identifying such details, no matter how large or small, and fully meeting
such needs in a discreet manner. As well as its all-embracing range of fully tested vehicles, it brings to the table many years of experience gained in the provision of armoured vehicles to discerning customers around the world.
Comfort and technology
Sentinel and Discovery Sentinel. An extensive range of colour and trims are available. The Defender can also be fitted to various trim levels, including County and SE, and now has additional options, including Comfort Pack (air conditioning, CD player), Interior Pack (carpet flooring, high-line cubby, part-leather seats and leather steering wheel), Leather Pack (seats and steering wheel) and Exterior Pack (Brunel grille and headlamp surrounds, body-coloured roof and wheel arches, and side-runners).
While customers are buying an armoured vehicle for protection first and foremost, they are also buying a Jaguar or Land Rover, marques renowned for technical innovation and comfort. Although there are a small number of standard soft-skin options that are not available to the armoured range – by virtue of the cell configuration itself – the vehicles nevertheless come with a range of features that greatly enhance comfort for the occupants and the driving experience. For instance, the Discovery Sentinel has the full range of off-road assist features of the standard vehicle, such as the Terrain Response select function that alters the vehicle automatically to tackle a variety of surfaces, such as tarmac, ruts, grass, mud, snow or sand. Anti-stall and automatic hill descent features are also fitted to the off-roaders, allowing the vehicles to tackle very steep slopes in full safety. In terms of comfort the armoured range offers an interior space that is virtually indistinguishable from that of the soft-skin cars, with the accent on luxury in the XJ Sentinel, Range Rover
Supporting the customer at every step Jaguar Land Rover is fully committed to the support of its customers throughout the life of the vehicle, from the consultation process during ordering to a comprehensive after-sales package. When a customer chooses Jaguar Land Rover they can rest assured that every aspect of their ownership has been covered, and that their vehicle will not let them down when it matters most. A dedicated security consultant works closely with the customer during the sales process, to ensure that their full requirements are met. A wide range of specialised optional security and vehicle features are available, which can be tailored to meet individual requirements. Moreover, each vehicle is fully optimised for the country or region in which it is intended to be employed. Driver training While the physical protection of VIPs is important, it can also be greatly enhanced by fully-trained drivers, who can expertly handle the vehicle in the most tense of situations.
To provide a complete package of vehicle and driver, Jaguar Land Rover offers a comprehensive range of driver training programmes, which can be tailored to suit customer requirements. Experienced instructors not only provide training in a range of defensive driving skills, but also instruction in how to handle the armoured vehicles, which by their nature are heavier than their ‘softskinned’ counterparts. After-sales service Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles have been carefully designed so that the baseline vehicle can be serviced and repaired within the global Jaguar Land Rover dealership programme, using standard diagnostic equipment. Vehicles come with a full three-year, 50,000-mile warranty. Servicing and repair of the armour protection is carried out when required by a team of dedicated specialists, working on site. Jaguar Land Rover also provides a number of scheduled visits per year by a dedicated technician to assist with vehicle familiarisation and servicing. Protection without compromise Combined with the company’s expertise and long experience in offroad vehicles, armoured cars and luxury transport, the Jaguar Land Rover customer support programme provides a complete security solution for the protection of key personnel
against a range of threats. No other company offers the breadth of solutions available, and none can match the performance – both in terms of protection and driveability – offered by the Jaguar Land Rover armoured family across a wide spectrum of operational environments. By using the best technology, thoroughly tested and certificated to meet the most stringent standards, Jaguar Land Rover is dedicated to providing the best possible protection for key personnel, while ensuring that comfort is maintained and that cost is competitive.

Introducing the Award Winning
As a highly innovative company which is part of the rich manufacturing history of Great Britain, OKO Group supports the British Armed Forces and other industries with its pragmatic invention, the Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant, that was launched onto the marketplace in the 1970s. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn the OKO Group has been singled out as the winner of the VEHICLE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AWARD 2012/13, an independent award scheme sponsored by Security Industry E-Mag. Recognised both in the UK and abroad, the Award Scheme was created in order to recognise those businesses and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their particular field. Security Industry E-Mag is always keen to bring attention
2012
to those who are providing a product or service that stands out from the crowd and deserves to be appreciated not only by its’ readers, but also by a wider audience. Not every organisation can walk away with one of these accolades, that have become the hallmark of success, but those that do all emerge from the process more successful; with many having gone on to become acknowledged leaders in the marketplace.
...it comes as no surprise to learn the OKO Group has been singled out as the winner of the VEHICLE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AWARD 2012/13, an independent award scheme sponsored by Security Industry E-Mag. The Army rely on their vehicles to transport important equipment, ammunition and general stores, such as food products across all sorts of terrains, including places such as Afghanistan, and Iraq in recent years. Before the introduction of OKO’s incredible Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant the armed forces relied on ‘get you home tyres’ . Invented before the onset of the Second World War, these tyres consisted of fabric tubes inside the tyre, which had a secondary chamber that slowly released air into the outer tyre.
Security Industry emag
The drawbacks to this type of tyre were easy to see..... as it forced military personnel to return back to base to have the tyre replaced immediately. Later saw the development of the ‘run flat tyre’ , but this too could only seal one hole at a time. Now, thanks to OKO’s revolutionary Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant military personnel can continue on their onward journey, unhampered; with a tyre being quickly repaired, regardless of whether it has one or several holes. Whatever the army vehicle ..... a Snatch, Drops vehicle or Land Rover ............ it doesn’t need to stop! Non-hazardous and suitable to be conveyed by air, OKO’s Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant is made of an aqueous and glycol based solution containing many advanced sealant ingredients that are held in suspension. Containing strong anti-corrosives to prevent against rust in the wheels or tyre bands, OKO’s Tyre Sealant also contains preservatives to ensure its suitability for tropical and dessert climates, as well as freezing conditions - working in temperatures as low as – 40 degrees Celsius. Thoroughly tested by OKO before it went onto the market, award-winning OKO’s Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant was recently put through its paces on a British Army Land Rover which sustained up to 30 punctures whilst driving over nails on the parade
2012
ground. None of the Land Rover, or light logistics vehicles tested had a drop in function throughout the demonstrations. As well as being effective, OKO’s Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant is also quick to use; with it normally taking two people 30 minutes to change a tyre on a Drop army vehicle carrying ammunition, risking its operational capability and endangering the crew in hostile situations. Using OKO Puncture Proof Sealant means that it can maintain its performance and avoid any downtime. You can view the test on YouTube at www.youtube.com and search for the Official OKO Military Demonstration Video. In other tests where bullets were fired at the tyres, OKO Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant slowed down the rate of deflation, allowing vital time for the vehicle to move out of the danger zone.
Now, thanks to OKO’s revolutionary Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant military personnel can continue on their onward journey, unhampered; with a tyre being quickly repaired... Little wonder then this groundbreaking Sealant is in use across the globe, including having been given NATO and SEATO part numbers, as well as being used by UN Peacekeepers. Whilst many copies from different companies have found their way onto the market, OKO suggest that replication is the highest form of flattery. Others may replicate the OKO’s revolutionary Puncture Proof Tyre Sealant , but the research for this revolutionary product is OKO’s alone! Receiving the VEHICLE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AWARD 2012/13 is a milestone for the OKO Group, forming the final piece of the jigsaw that confirms the Club’s success, as well as acting as a seal of approval to prospective clients. Commenting on receiving this accolade Chris Ring, company spokesman at OKO had this to say: “We are proud to accept this award and look forward to a successful 2013.” To find your nearest OKO Puncture Free Tyre Sealant stockist contact Award-winning.... Established in 1977, as a traditional manufacturer and supplier of high quality mirrors for a wide range of industries, Yorkshire-based Ashtree Glass has undergone a mini-revolution over the past 12 months, resulting in a change of name to Ashtree Vision & Safety, further reflecting the company’s expertise in reflective, mirrored solutions. The company has a varied client base operating in the defence, construction and military sectors. It works with high profile businesses including JCB, French firm Liebherr Construction, and the Armed Forces, to provide functional, durable products that withstand extreme elements in some of the world’s harshest environments. The modern age of shifting social and political climates has brought about the diversification of military roles and, as a result, a greater prescence of armoured carriers operating within urban environments. With safety being such a pertinent issue for pedestrains and road users alike, increased visiblity could prevent potential accidents. Heightened visibility means that drivers are able to respond more quickly to incidents, thus increasing driver safety, as well as the safety of those outside the vehicle. This is particularly important in areas where there is a lot of construction traffic, on busy building sites, where the risk to ground workers is magnified. Yet driver and pedestrian safety is not the only concern, high impact noise vibrations from electrical and other equipment has the potential to effect the density of mirrors, resulting in a breakdown of composition, creating weaknesses and leading to product malfunction. In response Ashtree has created a range of mirrors that use the deepest possible radius allowed by European approval standards. Class II and III are the drivers main mirrors and Ashtree manufacture them with radii between 1200mm and 2000mm. Vehicles over a certain size also require class IV wide angle mirror, class V over door mirror and a class VI front view, or over screen, mirror. The Ashtree class IV and V mirrors have a 300mm radius and class VI has a 250mm radius. These give a larger field of vision than mirrors approved to earlier European standards. Ashtree universal mirrors are also suitable for replacement parts and for vehicle upgrades. The biggest advancements in mirror safety have been in the production of unbreakable mirrors. Ashtree’s range includes mirrors tested and approved for road going vehicles, as well as safety mirrors for off highway use and materials handling. Additionally, the company has developed a unique, safety mirror, with blind spot eliminator, for use on a variety of machines. Used in conjunction with Ashtree mirror arms, the products gives operators superior visibility.
Ashtree’s range also includes powered adjustable mirrors and interior mirrors as well as mirror arms for a wide spectrum of applications, providing adjustment variables so the mirror can be mounted in the optimum position, based on operator visibility. Additionally, the company has developed a number of heating element solutions, for heavy duty use, in the toughest of environments. ! ! " # $ %
Aside safety mirrors and mounts Ashtree has had a glass cutting department since 1982 and works with clients to offer bespoke solutions, based on requirements. The company is also a market leader in the production of licence holders for industry and offers spares kits, cables, wires and switches for a variety of powered mirrors.
& '
From its design and manufacturing base, Ashtree employs 27 staff to undertake central processes, as well as product development. Director John Roper revealed: “As a first generation family business, we understand that in order to maintain a healthy client base and continue to build on our existing reputation as a market leader, we need to evolve. Part of this process is concentrating on R&D and design, providing solutions that exceed functionality and also pay attention to aesthetics. “We operate in a truly global market place, within a highly competitive discipline. It’s therefore imperative that the products that we supply are durable and do the job that they are meant to do. 2012 was a big year for Ashtree, not only did it undertake a rebranding exercise in order to appeal to new markets it also underwent redevelopment at its 5,000 sqm manufacturing and office facility. The redevelopment, which included the refit of manufacturing and processing areas, saw the addition of a double storey extension and mezzanine floor, with the aim of creating a more fluid processing environment, increasing capacity and product development. Roper continued: “Our new facilities will enable us to continue to produce highly functional and durable products that meet the needs of a rapidly changing environment, where noise vibrations and foreign objects have the potential to cause damage. “We are undertaking some visibility studies, which will help us identify new opportunities in the military sector. Coupled with our strategic growth objectives, we’re looking forward to continuing with our commitment to provide customers with better products, which facilitate a safer working environment. In April 2012, Ashtree was among a select band of UK businesses to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade). This prestigious award is bestowed on companies which have demonstrated a consistent increase in their export sales over a number of years. Visit www.avsuk.co to view Ashtree’s range of products.

HERBERT celebrates
Cambridgeshire-based HERBERT SYSTEMS has achieved an impressive reputation for the design and manufacture of airport and logistic baggage and parcel handling systems, each designed around the evolving operational needs of its customers. The company has an impressive history: its parent company, R J Herbert Engineering, was established 40 years ago and has been growing and expanding into new markets ever since. Today, it is still family owned and run, and continues to innovate, while adhering to traditional values such as reliability, integrity and excellence, as part of the truly customer-orientated service. This innovation and commitment to on-going product development are reflected in the new products that have been launched during their 40th anniversary year, like the exceptional Herbert TRS automatic tray return system for airport security areas. The TRS is creating a real impact within the airport security industry. In a nutshell, the TRS is designed to speed up airport security checks by automatically presenting trays at a consistent speed to passengers arriving at security – and thereby reducing the stress of queuing and waiting for trays – eliminating virtually all manual handling by staff, leaving staff to concentrate on security rather than manual handling, and significantly reduce capital costs to airport operators. In fact,
2012
SYSTEMS successful years with the launch of the remarkable TRS
the clever modular design of the TRS means that it has a smaller footprint than conventional systems, which saves space and, because throughput is quicker, airports can even reduce the number of lanes required to handle the same number of passengers. A win-win solution for passengers, staff at the ‘sharp end’ and the airport operators themselves. The first installations went in at London Stansted where they were extensively trialled. Head of Terminal at Stansted Airport, John Farrow, says: “The innovative Automatic Tray Return System we’ve introduced here at London Stansted utilises technology more effectively to reduce the manual handling of passengers’ bags and supersedes the previous labour-intensive system with an efficient automatic one.
Security Industry emag
“On-going feedback from passengers and staff has helped modify the prototype and deliver the system that’s now in operation.”
Baggage Alignment System
Andy Dowe, Herbert Systems’ Business Development Manager expands: “By replacing a manual system with the TRS automatic system, we can eliminate the need for staff to lift stacks of trays. Each tray, as it reaches the end of the line, is automatically returned to the start of the line and is presented to the passenger as he or she arrives at the checkpoint. This means staff don’t need to handle trays, they arrive as required for passengers and the staff can concentrate on the security elements of their role – and are not beset with manual handling issues.” The advantages and benefits to be gained in using the Herbert TRS are obviously spreading worldwide. The company has recently won a prestigious contract to supply six TRS to Stavanger Sola Airport in Norway and is poised to announce another major order in the new year.
Baggage Orientation System
Jo Herbert, the company’s Marketing Director is suitably bullish about the future: “Key to our success has been our philosophy to provide individually tailored solutions that will not only meet, but in many cases, exceed the customer’s expectations. Coupled with this, we aim to ensure the client reaps the maximum benefit from their investment in our innovative baggage handling technology, which enables sustainability, together with improved efficiencies and minimum maintenance costs.
Modular System
“Our policy of innovation combined with engineering that is both intelligent and built to last is gaining more and more momentum the world over. As we enter our fifth decade, we are seeing significant growth within our core markets and the opening up of a number of exciting opportunities for the future.” TO DISCUSS YOUR INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS CONTACT: HERBERT SYSTEMS Middle Drove, Marshland St James Cambs PE14 8JT Tel: +44 1945 430 666 Email: enquiries@herbertsystems.co.uk Website: www.herbertsystems.co.uk

We report on how Radio Tactics is supporting the fight against crime. The market for high tech digital intelligence and evidence gathering equipment has evolved considerably due to the proliferation of communications-based mobile applications (Apps) and standardised operating systems. This increases the pressure on crime prevention authorities as they battle to deal with this diversity and equip their operations with tools specifically designed for frontline use. One company that knows only too well the challenges facing businesses operating in forensic security is Southamptonbased Radio Tactics. Established in 2004, the company is a specialist innovator of high tech digital intelligence and evidence gathering equipment for customers worldwide. It operates from head quarters in the UK, with further satellites in America and Australia and provides high tech, reliable solutions to the security industry, including those operating in law enforcement, military, government and intelligence agencies.
The company employs 30 staff with a primary focus on the development of innovative crime prevention and intelligence gathering solutions, to meet the growing requirements of a rapidly changing market. Radio Tactics’ solutions enable law enforcement agencies to interrogate mobile phones, GPS and portable digital devices to gather evidence and provide immediate actionable intelligence. According to Mike Rose, head of marketing at Radio Tactics, the mobile forensics market has seen the biggest increase in demand in the last couple of years, based on rapid technological advancements and the popularity of smartphones. He revealed that the company is working to develop its current product range to keep up with the challenges facing its customer base, whilst also focusing on how future developments will influence new innovations. He said: “The challenges for our customers are now much greater than they were when the company was founded, at a time when mobile technology was still very much in its infancy. “In particular, advanced device capabilities and faster connectivity has seen technology-based crime become more of a threat than it was ten years ago. Digital Defence provides software that secures and encrypts the information held on mobile devices and removable media. It is fast, highly intuitive and works without compromise or complication. It is also invisible to the end user, does not impede on the performance of the device and is FIPS 197 accredited. Security of data, coupled with the prevention of unauthorised access, is the fundamental issue affecting all mobile device users and the organisations they work for. The latest release of Secure Mobile, from Digital Defence Ltd, addresses this by providing real-time encryption of persistent data, using 128 or 256-bit AES encryption algorithms, utilising FIPS197-certified XTS cipher mode. (Persistent data refers to data which is not affected by factory resets, such as storage cards or the /application folder on Motorola devices). Each file is fully encrypted in a seamless manner, wholly transparent to the user, and each using unique encryption keys. The key is generated in part from data within the file, and in part from securely stored data in the registry folder. Device authentication, which integrates with Microsoft’s LASSD system, protects against unauthorised access. Access can be restricted to specific applications, thus ensuring that unknown or unauthorised programs are unable to process data; this is achieved by White or Black listing the various applications from execution and encryption access. All data ports are protected by the Access Control module within Secure Mobile, which ensures data transfer is only permitted to secure channels; it is also possible to White List all WWAN, WLAN and USB channels to restrict or enable access. Encryption is wholly transparent – both to user and to application. It is accomplished by the use of a file system filter driver, which means that we intercept all file access – effectively acting as a second file system driver. Only data that remains after a factory reset (i.e. persistent or permanent data) is handled; storage folders on the \windows folder, which is wiped after a reset, are not encrypted.
Secure Mobile is system wide, and independent of any applications that may be installed; if any storage card or local persistent folder is marked to be encrypted, this will apply to everything that is stored on or in it. Secure Mobile takes supremacy over all other forms of user authentication once installed, thus ensuring ‘security for life’ - no matter what resets or other applications are encountered. This prevents any user, or any intruder, from accessing any element that you wish to keep secure, no matter what actions they may take. User authentication is by way of either password or biometric validation; or a combination of both approaches can be used. If required, LDAP can be used for corporate network preferences for each user, thus reducing the overhead for system administrators. Additional levels of security can be enabled, for even greater protection; if, for example, a user has not accessed the system for a given period, or if there have been a (system-definable) number of unauthorised or incorrect access attempts, or if access to a given device has not been made for a certain period. Device wipes will remove key system files and registry entries, rendering the device unusable without a clean reboot; data on storage cards can be set, at installation, to be deleted or kept when a device wipe is takes place. Fully Code of Connection compliant, Secure Mobile meets all Data Protection Act requirements, and allows organisations to deploy a wholly secure mobile working infrastructure. Current users include a major police force that uses 27 different applications which populate in excess of 300 different forms, directly integrated into government databases. This allows officers to do virtually all ‘paperwork’ by direct electronic means. The same force has made savings of around ¾ million pounds, by reducing secured voice traffic and moving to a mobility-centric environment. Secure Mobile is the only global Enterprise Mobility Validated security solution running WEH and all security policies can be either set centrally or locally on the device by using an administrator’s password. System overheads are around only 2% - ensuring there is no perceivable impact, on application or response speed, when data is being encrypted or
Security Industry emag
decrypted in real time. Single sign-on means that, upon authentication, all files are ready to be decrypted; and a centralised management console ensures mass deployment of all corporate security policies on mobile computers. Any modern-day, distributed workforce requires a mobile security solution that seamlessly integrates with IT initiatives to maintain compliance. Working with police forces, we have developed a solution that protects all of the selected data on end point devices and ensure that you are able to remotely deploy security policies that limit access to encrypted folders from Applications, Connections and Ports. Flexible user authentication is achieved either by using password, biometric fingerprint authentication or a combination of both. Due to its unique architecture, our solution is completely invisible to the end user and also does not drain the battery or reduce device performance when data is encrypted at bit level in real time. Our solution
2013
is compliant with all requirements set out in the MoPI guidelines and is FIPS compliant. Premium technology that takes care of your mobile data security issues at every level. “The Secure Mobile solution is effective but also simple and straightforward to use. In particular, the facilities provided to remotely deploy the software and to support users remotely simplified the logistics of supporting a large population of highly mobile users. Russell Lawson, Mobile Data Technical Team Leader, Staffordshire Police Support is readily available as required – Digital Defence has a solid reputation in this area, and the company, specialists in the field of file and folder encryption, is fully committed to customer-driven development. At the cutting edge of RF Technology The international market for RF amplified security systems continues to grow. Simon Taylor, Operations Director at Bristol-based Amplifier Technology reveals how their business is using R&D to secure new orders on a global scale. Founded in 1962, Amplifier Technology has grown to provide bespoke engineering solutions to a wide range of customers worldwide, with a focus on high quality, innovative support to those operating in the defence and national security industries, commercial and industry sectors and the scientific and medical community. In addition to the design and manufacture of cutting edge RF high power amplifiers, the depth of the company’s experience in what is often described as a ‘black art’ gives it the capabilities to develop world beating levels of performance for clients. The company currently employs 30 staff at its headquarters in Yate, near Bristol and undertakes significant R&D product development, as well as onsite manufacturing and supply chain operations, for a wide range of clients, based on specific needs and operational requirements. It has worked on behalf of some of the biggest names in the defence sector, including BAE Systems and is well respected in the industry. Amongst other collaborations, it has a long standing relationship with Lockheed Martin to design and develop demand-led performance enhancing electronic devices, for a use in the defence sector. Most recently, Amplifier Technology has broadened its appeal to provide up to date engineering support for obsolete amplified solutions. It’s a skill that has already seen it working on behalf of the Turkish Military, taking on what was formerly a Marconi designed product and providing a reverse engineered solution that will allow it to be used and developed well into the future. This area of specialism is set to become increasingly buoyant due to tough market conditions, which have resulted in the decline of many small, specialist engineering firms. And as an extension of its existing services, reverse engineering capabilities are likely to become a greater part of Amplifier Technology’s service offer, providing alignment with the development of bespoke RF amplified technology solutions for new and existing customers.
Amplifier Technology’s most recent growth has come on the back of an increase in requirement for engineered amplified solutions based on enhanced broadband capabilities, due in part to a rapidly changing market. Most significant is the company’s support of customers operating in the defence and security industries, as demand for products becomes ever more acute and advancements are made. Electronic warfare is undoubtedly a huge market and amplified defence systems need not only to be fit for purpose, but also exceed expectations. Smaller, mobile devices that operate across a wider frequency and with greater reach are fast replacing multiple device systems. The band width is also greatly enhanced, with amplification to 18GHz now being utilised. Taylor added that in addition to focusing on attracting new home-grown customers, from a wider range of sectors, Amplifier Technology is looking to broaden its appeal in global markets, using a global network of representatives to sell products to international businesses. DIGITAL RF EASY GUIDE TO JAMMING SYSTEMS The field of Jamming is always a very difficult area for people to make a decision as to the exact solution required to meet their specific needs. Digital RF, has built-up an impressive reputation since its inception for offering complete Counter Terrorist & Surveillance solutions, individually tailored to
2013
meet the client’s specific needs. All of Digital RF’s products are designed and manufactured in their facility in Essex in the UK, but their services do not end there. The company prides itself in providing a complete After-Sales Service including system integration, training and in field support.
With ever increasing threats and conflicts around the globe, the demand for Jamming Systems has greatly increased over the past years and Digital RF has made sure that its product range continues to develop in order to answer the newly encountered threats. The company has also developed an Easy Guide to Jamming Systems, to aid the decision making process surrounding the purchasing of Fixed, Portable and Vehicle Jamming Systems: Fixed Building/Room Jammers: As technological products continue to reduce in size and increase in connectivity there is a growing need for more complex systems to provide building security. Preventing communications within a building is the main task to ensure the security of information. Depending on the building and occupants there are two methods commonly used. Where the building/room is in a VIP’s office, Embassy or Police Station, Low Power Room Jammers can be placed in each room as required. Featuring full Remote Control, the units can be switched on and off as required to block communications when needed. For Detention Centers or Prisons a different Jamming System is required, such as Digital RF’s High Power Jammer Systems, which can be placed around the perimeter of the building, enabling the jamming signal to be transmitted into the building. In both these situations there are two concerns from the user: How do we ensure the jamming signal does not go outside the building? The Digital RF Site Signal Survey provides information which understands the signals in and around the
location, adjusting the levels accordingly and selecting the correct antenna for the installation. Can we use our own phones while jamming? The Digital RF Jammer System has a facility to provide a White list (phones allowed) and a Black list (phones not allowed). Digital RF also provides a product range to protect VIPs against illegal interception of telephones. Tapping into telephones illegally is a growing threat to security, but by placing the Digital RF Network Guard in an office, or in a building, all network activity is monitored. If a threat tries to intercept calls and SMS messages, the Network Guard will give an alarm. The details of the Frequency band the threat is being transmitted on is automatically sent to the Digital RF Handheld Detector and Security Staff can then immediately sweep the perimeter of the building and locate and remove the threat. Portable Jamming Systems for VIP, Military and Police personnel protection. Moving a VIP from building to the Convoy vehicle is a vulnerable point in Security operations. Protection against Remote Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RCIED) has to be maintained. In some situations the Convoy Jammer can be placed close enough to the apartment / building to provide coverage during the transition to the Convoy. Where this is not possible the Close Protection Security Staff can carry
Security Industry emag
a Portable Jammer. The specification of such a Jammer requires some compromises. To provide the best coverage you would need to Jam all frequencies 20-6000MHz at high power. In order to do this with a portable handheld case the size and weight will be too much for one person to carry. Added to this is the danger to the safety of the Security Staff from the transmitted radiation. A solution is to provide protection against the most common threats. A system should have a wide range of frequencies available, the highest power that can safely be transmitted, and be powered by a light weight battery with the required operational life. Digital RF has a wide range of Portable solutions including the Briefcase Jammers and Back Pack Jammers, tailored to the mission and the security operation procedures of each organization. Reactive Jamming, sometimes known as Smart Jamming or Threat Detection, is used for certain environments and missions to target threats as they appear. Vehicle mounted Jamming Systems and RF Survey systems on-the-move for VIP Convoys. The use of Vehicle mounted Jammers in Convoys is a wellknown tool for the protection of VIP’s against the threat of RCIEDs. Vehicle Systems fitted with Jammers and Antenna Systems can block RCIEDs with frequencies from 20MHz to 3000MHz, 6000MHz or 9000MHz depending on the application. However there is a common misunderstanding when it comes to the operational range of coverage from Convoy Jammers. In built-up suburban areas the performance of a Jammer may be very different to the performance in an open desert environment. The performance of any Jammer System whether it is wall mounted, portable or a vehicle system depends on the level of the jamming signal versus the level of the terrorist trigger transmission - both being received by the RCIED receiver. A GSM Jammer will have a different
2013
range of protection when it is near a Base Telephone system (BTS) as opposed to operating where the GSM signals are low. The difference in the performance between high and low GSM signals can be quite enormous. Many Jammer companies take advantage of this fact and quote very large jamming ranges. In reality these advertised distances are not achieved and users are disappointed. Digital RF provides honest distance assurances of jamming based on the actual signal survey in the area. Digital RF has a range of Survey Tools to assist Security Staff in route planning to ensure the most effective use of a Vehicle Jamming System. The Digital RF Network Survey Tool monitors the signal level of every Network along the route. The Data is analyzed and a plot of the route is provided indicating the signal strength of each Network provider. Based on this information the Security Staff can avoid areas of high network coverage or locate the relevant BTS. For a more detailed analysis of a convoy route the Digital RF Threat Detection System can be used. The Threat Detector scans all frequencies from 20-6000MHz. Analysis can be performed live or later from the office to show all the frequencies received on route and the direction/location of the frequency. Using this information Security Staff can analyze the route for potential threats to ensure the maximum performance of a Jamming system. The Threat Detector can be linked to the Digital RF Convoy Jammer to provide a Reactive Jammer. For more information about Digital RF’s extensive range of Counter Terrorist & Surveillance Products visit us at Stand N72 at Counter Terror Expo, Olympia, London on 24-25th April 2013 or at sales@digitalrf.net - where the Digital RF team will be happy to help you with your specific requirements.

Amazon Cases & Racks from CP Cases TM
providing ruggedized solutions for a global market
2012
In a recent interview with CP Cases’ Managing Director, Peter Ross, the Security Industry E Magazine received an insight into the success of the company and their benchmark, Amazon Cases and Rack Systems. To begin the interview; Ross provided a ‘brief history of the company’: “CP Cases has been manufacturing transit cases and rack systems since 1971 and in the early 1990s we moved into rotational moulding processes as we saw a market where only one company was supplying any form of polymer-based tough, lightweight case. Following a project involving the Gendarmerie in France for bespoke grenade carrying cases, which were lightweight, flame retardant and able to resist a level of accidental discharge, we developed designs that lent themselves to a more agile approach and custom options.” “Focussing on creating the most robust, lightest, most adaptable case possible, Amazon was unveiled at Eurosatory, in Paris, in 2006.” “In fact, the cases had been used a year earlier for The Tote, formerly the Horserace Totalisator Board, the British bookmaker, for their racecourse-based portable betting terminals, which they are in the process of up-grading and Amazon Cases are again being used as the betting terminal container.” How have the company advanced its product range? “Amazon Racks were a logical evolution, utilizing our knowledge of building 19” rack systems for electronics and combining that with the Amazon production capabilities to create a tough, portable unit that is resistant to impact and drop/shock, temperature extremes and vibration, as well as water and dust ingress.” Ross explained. What can your clients expect to gain from investing in your products? “Peace of mind. Simple as that. Clients do not want to worry about whether their equipment will arrive to a location in one piece or not; they have more important things to worry about. We pride ourselves on providing great customer service, shorter lead times than competitive products and our ability to customise our cases and racks to fit the client’s requirements, both rapidly and economically. We want to make sure that our customers are assured that their kit is protected and arrives ready to use and is simple to deploy.”
“While some companies might see the challenge of how to, for example, package a mobile satellite communications system, comprising of an antenna, data-cryptor and rugged laptop, as a problem, we embrace the proposition as a way of applying our skills and techniques to a new situation and learning how we can improve our products.” “The production team also take a similar approach and treat every job as something special. Because every project is different in some way, our guys do not work on a traditional production line, robotically performing the same task day after day; in the example above, they are crafting a piece of indispensable equipment designed to support vital operations.” “The whole team has this outlook and applies it to everything we do here” he added. When asked ‘how the company test their products’, Ross explained: “While we have extensive in-house testing facilities, we are ISO9001:2008 certified, and our products are built to MIL-STD-810F standards, the real test is out in the field. Amazon Cases and Racks have been used in some of the most diverse and hostile environments on the planet. From off-shore oil-rigs, to war-zones, for both media and defence applications, from scientific missions in the Arctic, to exploration of rain forests, our cases have provided essential protection and transit capabilities for a very wide range of delicate and mission-critical equipment for the most diverse array of organisations.” What sectors of the marketplace do you consider to be your main market? “Traditionally, Amazon Cases have been supplied to the defence and security sector, as well as broadcast media, but any industry that needs robust, secure transportation containers should be looking at Amazon Cases and Racks as a solution. We are actively pursuing options within the satcom equipment industry, as we know Amazon is the perfect solution for users, both military and civil, of remote communications equipment.” Are your services purely delivered to customers in the UK or on a wider basis?
Can you give an insight into the Amazon Cases team?
“Our Head Office is in London, where we also have full manufacturing capability, and we maintain facilities in Aberdeen in Scotland, in North America and in France, too. However, utilising our network of partners through Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and Australasia, we believe we can reach anywhere.”
“As I said above, one of the key features of Amazon Cases and Racks is customisation and that flexible approach is reflected in the attitude of everyone in the team” Ross continued.
“We are also very happy to support new international clients directly and forthcoming campaigns and activities are looking at taking Amazon Cases into new territories so we can truly cover the world.”
Security Industry emag
How is the company looking to move forward? Due the diversity of the product and our ability to customise our cases and racks, we see Amazon Cases being suitable for a wide range of industries and uses. The key element is customization; every client’s needs are different and working from a base design and tailoring to their requirements means that we can deliver a unique capability and solution for them. When asked ‘Will CP Cases be showcasing their services at any industry shows during 2013?’, Ross responded: “We will be exhibiting at many events throughout the year, including IDEX in Abu Dhabi and Counter Terror Expo and DSEI, both in London. We also exhibit in conjunction with our partners throughout the world, including the Military & Aerospace Exhibition in Israel, ITEC in Rome and AUVSI in Washington DC.” “We feel it is very important for customers to see and experience Amazon Cases and Racks, so a lot of attention is spent on attending the right events and making sure people are kept up to date with our capabilities and offerings.”
2012
In closing, why should potential customers choose Amazon Cases over any of your competitors? “We take a very individualist approach to customer service and have very short lead-times, as customers often want cases at very short notice. And at the heart of all this is our ability to customise and provide a highly singular product, tailored to the client’s needs” explained Ross. “Very simply, we feel Amazon Cases and Racks offer the most robust, secure and diverse range of cases and racks for equipment transportation and storage” he concluded. Meeting the Challenges of Modern FRS
Fire & Rescue Services are an integral part of keeping communities safe, yet they face considerable challenges on account of cost cutting and structural boundaries. Security Industry reports on how technology is fuelling greater efficiency in a rapidly changing market. The aim for Fire & Rescue Services (FRS) is to provide cohesive and resilient assistance, based on the needs of local communities, whether urban or rural. Yet, increasingly this can only be achieved
2012
if service providers adapt quickly and with particular attention to technology as a means to develop more efficient, cost effective operations. Deliverability is a crucial element to successful FRS operations. However, over the last ten years FRSs have found themselves stretched by budget cuts and increased statutory obligations. This means there is now much greater pressure to perform for those operating in FRSs, despite fewer resources being available.
Authorities have undoubtedly had to think smarter and adopt new ways of working, with technology playing an increasingly crucial role in achieving greater efficiencies, whether through control room operations, back-office systems or mobile devices. The successful delivery of comprehensive communications and information systems that meet the challenges and needs of a rapidly changing sector is paramount. Established in 1982, originally as part of Marconi, Leicestershirebased 3tc Software has built an enviable reputation as a provider of fully integrated, mission critical software applications to the UK public sector and global emergency service market.
The company provides vital operational support through command and control, computer aided dispatch, patient transports systems, mobile data and management information solutions. In particular, 3tc Software’s future strategy is being led by innovation and the company has recently launched Guardian Command for .NET/Windows, in response to increased demand for solutions that work across industry standard hardware and operating systems and working with secure mobile technologies. According to Jacqueline Norton, Sales Director of 3tc Software, Guardian Command is a “step change in modern mobilising systems.
Security Industry emag
As a fully integrated software solution for use in FRS environments, Guardian Command enables end-to-end command and control of communications, inclusive of incident and resource management, performance management, pre-determined attendance and attribute-based mobilising. It essentially supports best practice by providing a safe and secure operational tool that allows FRSs to manage processes throughout the lifecycle of the incident. Jacqueline confirmed: “Guardian Command has been developed with input from experts who have actually done the job in a Control Room and so the user experience and understanding of the challenges they face, are second to none. Our software solutions meet the needs of the modern working environment, specifically the requirement to access information in mobile situations. In addition to Guardian Command and in response to market requirements, 3tc Software evolved the third generation of MODAS Professional, a mobile data solution that allows crews to access up-to-date incident and risk information. The solution manages risk data by automating the distribution of updates so that fire crews always have the latest information to hand and uses up-to-date geographic data to provide crucial information whilst they are en route to incidents. This makes their job safer and provides advance knowledge of particular hazards they could face at the fire ground.” Both Guardian Command and MODAS Professional have been designed to work alongside 3tc Software’s other software solutions,
2012
which also include IRS Plus, a specialist incident recording programme that meets Department of Communities and Local Government specification. “It’s vital that our software solutions work alongside existing systems which is why we’re so committed to supporting our customers in the full integration of new technology. Attention is given to functionality and ease of use, as well as core efficiencies. It’s important that we take the strain and stress out of the implementation of new systems, so that customers do not lose valuable time and critically FRS authorities remain operational. Clearly, technology will play an ever vital part in the evolution of Fire and Rescue Services. We need to ensure that we work proactively and react positively to future challenges and opportunities, providing bespoke support and advice to existing and new customers alike.” For further information about how 3tc Software can support your business telephone 01455 826 400, visit www.3tcsoftware or email info@3tcsoftware.com 3tc Software The Coach House, Desford Hall, Leicester Lane Desford, Leicestershire LE9 9JJ Tel: 01455 826 400 Fax: 01455 826 401 Email: info@3tcsoftware.com Website: www.3tcsoftware.com

When it comes to judicial systems, experience has shown that when the quality of evidence is improved, it can have a very positive effect throughout the entire process. The more sound the evidence, the more likely it is to obtain a guilty plea from the suspect, thereby reducing the amount of time spent in court by Police officers and court staff. Guilty pleas also result in reduced sentences, helping reduce pressure on the Prison Service. Every successful prosecution enables victims and witnesses to place more and more trust in the judicial system and its ability to ensure that justice is done... and seen to be done. This in turn has a knock-on effect helping improve crime figures as victims and witnesses become more willing to report injustices they have seen or experienced. Established to develop the original ideas of co-founder Jerry Thornton, the ABEL Technology partnership has well over 100 man-years of hightech product development experience in its leadership team. ABEL Technology is recognised as a leader in the design and manufacture of cutting-edge interview recording products, created to meet the most demanding digital evidence recording requirements of Criminal Justice Systems around the world, as Jerry outlined in a recent interview: “The AVET range represents the beginning of a product development process that, because of the background of our founders, we are uniquely placed to undertake. Based on a specification created after running a highly successful ‘vulnerable witness interview’ pilot program with the Metropolitan Police in North London, the PER1 Portable Digital Interview Recorder has been designed and built from the ground up to provide affordable, rugged and reliable systems that can work as standalone units or be integrated into a network environment.” Whilst the state-of-the-art PER1 weighs less than 7kg including the case, camera, microphone and tripod, this in no way compromises the functionality or robustness of its design. The PER1 base unit is supplied with an independent head-unit that contains zoom and and wide angle cameras. It also comes with an exceptionally high quality table-top microphone. The highly flexible PER1 can simultaneously create up to three MPEG-2 compatible discs that can be played in any standard DVD player or ABEL Technology’s MIT2 multi-format transcriber. The PER1 can record from up to three cameras and four microphones as part of the same fully synchronised, evidentially secure recording. To comply with evidential requirements the PER1 also overlays time/ date and location data (if required) onto the video image in a non-block format; this information is updated via a GPS antenna supplied with the PER1. Fully international and capable of working in 27 languages, it comes as no surprise to learn the PER1 is used throughout the world: “The PER1 is used worldwide, even in remote, post-conflict or other locations where no local power source is available. For such situations, ABEL has teamed up with Powertraveller Ltd to supply an external lithium polymer
rechargeable battery pack which provides up to 3 hours of recording duration when using one of the PER1 low power consumption profiles.” Configured to work specifically with the PER1, this robust battery weighs only 631g and can be recharged from a vehicle, AC mains or from an optional portable solar panel. ABEL has fitted a number of innovative features into the PER1 including a secure fail-safe system, drawing upon the company’s knowledge of the market and extensive product development experience: “We understand how critical an interview may be, so to ensure that information is never unintentionally lost, the PER1 has a secure recording ‘fail-safe’ system including features such as an in-built stay-alive battery which allows the user to complete a recording even if external power fails and an internal memory back-up which allows the recovery of a recording in the event of a DVD error during the recording process. The interviewer may only get one chance to capture information that is vital to the case’ – PER1’s technology is designed to guarantee this evidence is obtained. “Being future-proof was also an important part of the PER1 design process. With this in mind, the PER1 has in-built network and USB connectivity to support features such as transferring interview data to centralised servers and the in-field upgrading of system functionality.” When asked what gives ABEL the edge over its’ rivals, Jerry explained: “Many of our competitors use off-the-shelf components, this inevitably produces a less evidentially defensible recording system. Our competitors are also at the mercy of third-party product suppliers and so may not be able to guarantee the longevity and reliability of their products. Such systems do not have evidential integrity at their core and cannot always be relied upon to generate data to the highest evidential standards” He continued: “In contrast, we have designed our system from the ground up solely for the purpose of evidential interview recording. We have total control of our product and our highly experienced team is able to easily adapt our systems to fully meet a particular client’s requirements.” Having gained an enviable reputation for quality and best practice over the years, ABEL certainly isn’t a company to ‘rest on its laurels’, as it remains committed to extending and developing its’ cutting-edge range of digital recording solutions to meet the ever-increasing needs of the judicial and private sectors internationally. The last word goes to Jerry: “Our belief that, over time, we can help bring about dramatic improvements in criminal justice systems throughout the world with our focused understanding of how technology can be used to protect the most vulnerable members of society.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: ABEL TECHNOLOGY LLP TEL: 08432 895 183 EMAIL: jthornton@abeltech.co.uk WEBSITE: www.abeltech.co.uk
