The Promise of Creative Community Advancing Our 60 Year History of Local Artistic Expression

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kath Gilliam, President Holli Ploog, Vice President David Young, Treasurer

In the summer of 1956, our experiment to build creative community began. That was the year that civic leader Cecil Lockhart-Smith, Nassan Gobran of Verde Valley School and Dr Harry Wood of Arizona State University planted the seeds of our organization.

Sixty summers ago, in a community of 400 ranchers and orchard workers, they developed the first Sedona Summer Arts Center. They were joined by Hopi ceramics instructors, Charles and Otelie Loloma, and a five-week term was offered to both locals and visitors. It was a new arts education model set within our high desert landscapes—specifically designed to turn people into artists and invite folks from all over the country to come here and create. It was a whole new world. By the late 1950s, our founders knew they had something special. They incorporated as a nonprofit in 1958, and turned an old apple packing warehouse into Sedona’s Art Barn in 1961. The proliferation of local culture followed, and our community came to depend on the Arts Center for creative inspiration, personal development, and the unbridled celebration of place. We honor and advance this legacy each and every day. After six decades of workshops, lectures, presentations, festivals, exhibitions, masquerades, and theatre premieres, Sedona Arts Center is growing and evolving into a 21st century organization. Our board, staff, and supporters continue to find new ways to expand creative community and connect our small town with the world. Recent initiatives—the guest-host experiment of the Sedona Summer Colony for Artists and Cultural Managers, the ongoing evolution of our Fine Art Gallery, the rollicking good time of our Sedona Ukulele Posse—all proceed from the early years of creative placemaking in the Verde Valley. Turn the pages of this catalog to discover a whole new world. Find the workshop, event, or cultural experience you’ve been looking for. Stop by the Gallery or Art Barn and learn about Sedona’s artists, workshops, and events. Share your ideas and creative energy with the Arts Center, and become part of our tradition of small town creative placemaking that began with a few classes in 1956. Today, all that our organization does is inspired by Wood, Gobran, Lockhart-Smith, and the Lolomas—and the founding promise of creative community. Join us soon as we nurture local artists, celebrate culture, and evolve Sedona Arts Center into a shining 21st century organization.

Strength through Simplification

Fealing Lin April 10–14, 2017

Kim Lordier April 11–13, 2017

Portrait painting can be very intimidating especially when using watercolor. Fealing will teach you how to relax and enjoy the process as you discover how value and temperature change when planes of the face change, as well as how to use transparent glazing to allow the glow of the paper to shine through. By balancing colors and weaving lights and darks, you will achieve painterly and successful portraits.

Kim believes strength in a painting comes from simplifying shapes and values. This workshop will emphasize composition and value patterns working from photos in a studio environment. Kim will also focus on color temperature changes, edge control, atmospheric perspective and lots of ‘one on one’ time at your easel.

Visual Dreaming in the Life Studio

Stuart Shils April 21–23, 2017

Stuart Shils April 25–27, 2017

Working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction - composition with color and shape - is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images, in the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints.

We will be working from ‘life’ through the graphic priorities of ‘painting’ as opposed to anatomy or any ideas about ‘how to’ paint the figure as in neoclassical ateliers. For us, the presence of the ‘model’ will serve as a shifting and relative point of reference within the studio amidst objects and cloth and our focus will be on response to the visual possibilities presented there in the room. Themes of inquiry include the fluid nature of composition, the subjectivity of perception, clarity of observation with much emphasis also placed on drawing with graphite and crayons. We’ll use acrylic paint on paper as our primary medium.

Emphasizing Abstraction

Painting from the Rim of the Grand Canyon Bill Cramer May 5–7, 2017 Nothing really compares to painting at the edge of the Grand Canyon. This three-day intensive offers: master instruction, the support of the Grand Canyon Association Field Institute (GCAFI) and coordination through the Sedona Arts Center. We will car pool to various locations on the south rim over the course of the workshop, coordinating our locations to create optimal lighting for the painting experience. Learn how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings with emphasis on how to effectively translate the often complex three dimensional landscape onto a two dimensional plane using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures. Further emphasis will be placed on the creative process – to make paintings that are more than strict representations of the landscape we see. Intermediate level to Advanced Plein Air students are welcome. All students should have a good familiarity with their equipment and some previous workshop experience with plein air painting. Bill will be demonstrating with oil paints. This workshop experience is limited to 10 students. Oils / Intermediate—Advanced $750 13

Community Outreach and Scholarships Here at Sedona Arts Center we are committed to building a more creative and expressive community. Throughout our history, we’ve worked with schools, community groups, Native American educators, civic leaders, the business community, and local arts patrons to ensure that creative opportunities abound. A major focus for the year ahead is the expansion of our community arts outreach efforts. Thanks to a small grant from the City of Sedona, our generous Scholarship Program funders, and creative patrons like you, here’s what we’re planning… Our Arts Education staff are actively seeking partners—local organizations and groups interested in developing creative activities together. If your school, facility, neighborhood, or business is interested in arts opportunities, contact us or stop by the Art Barn to explore the possibilities. We’ll also be expanding the Gretchen Lopez Scholarship—thanks to initial support from Jay and Sheri Young and a recent generous contribution from patron Patsy Reed. That program provides support for outreach and arts education to Native American communities, underserved areas, and groups that have little access to quality arts education. Last year, it fostered a new relationship with Monument Valley High School and Native American students there. Painter Gretchen Lopez and master potter Dennis Ott, head of our ceramics department delivered a series of classes and arts education, including a 3-day teaching session at Monument Valley High, followed by a 5-day painting and ceramics workshop for the students as a field trip to Sedona Arts Center. For 2016 and 2017, we want to do more! And thanks to wonderful ongoing support from the Kling Family Foundation we will. The Arts Center’s primary scholarship program continues to grow

and support those wanting to become immersed in art-making and creative experiences. That way, all of our friends and neighbors in Sedona can find support and help as they explore new creative landscapes. If you’ve always wanted to learn ceramics, become a painter, study with some of America’s great artists, ask us about an Arts Center Scholarship. Our staff are here to advise and eliminate barriers to participation. Why? Because building creative community and supporting local creative people has always been our mission.

Julie Bernstein Engelmann August 16–17, September 24–25, November 14–15

Kelli will guide you through simple tips and tricks that will take your photography to the next level. Discover how to capture the essence of a place rather than just a snapshot.

This is a fun two-hour adventure for those who like wine but may know nothing about painting. You will be led through creating a 12x16 acrylic painting on canvas in a step-by-step process. Local landscape subject matter and a surprisingly fool-proof process lead to fun, laughs, more wine & your painting is finished–suitable for framing! All materials Included.

Abstraction can be rich with depth, drama, and discovery! Julie’s layering technique gives you a powerful foundation for abstract painting and helps you develop ease and freedom with paint. 2nd Friday Fun with Acting & Wine

Landscape Drawing

Youtube Production

Vince Fazio Sept 26–Oct 5 or Nov 7–16

Bryan Reinhart October 29–November 5

Fun with Acting & Wine is an open house night to play in acting. This is a social and creative evening exploring elements of acting for stage and film. In a supportive and fun learning environment, we play in warm-up exercises, improv, cold readings and character work. No acting experience required. Newcomers encouraged to attend.

Using various media we move quickly from exploring the ‘reality’ of the landscape ‘as it is’ to a more personal look at the landscape as a motif for composition, emphasizing eye movement, focal point and value pattern. Part of the aim of the course is to create a shorthand language for sketching and part of the aim is to create a primer course for landscape painting. All materials included.

Google is looking for better quality videos to broadcast and promote on their youtube network. Instructor, Bryan Reinhart will use his 30 plus years as a professional filmmaker and 15 years as a film instructor to give you hands on training to make a more polished creative production. Lighting, cameras, sound, and editing equipment will be provided. All materials included.

Announcing the $5000

Sedona Art Prize The Sedona Arts Center and Gateway to Sedona have established The Sedona Art Prize, an annual visual art competition including monthly awards and a $5000 Grand Prize. Enter your work online and let Sedona Art Prize promote you and your website to the world. Each entry becomes a stand-alone web page with links and information about the artist. The one-time registration for Sedona Art Prize is $25, and each entry is $10. A monthly winner and finalists will be selected by distinguished artists, teaching faculty, and Sedona gallerists. The online competition is for 2-D art in any medium or style (excluding photography and digital image). Artists must be 18 or over and may enter as many original works as they wish. All entries should be works created within the past two years, The Sedona Art Prize competition closes next August, and the Grand Prize will be awarded in September 2017. It includes $5000 cash and the offer of an exhibition at Sedona Arts Center, as well as 2-week residency opportunity in our community. Second place of $1000, and third place of $750 will also be awarded. Last year’s Grand Prize winner George Bodine created a work of enigmatic beauty and mystery entitled Buried Sins. (Above right)

“When I was told I had won the Grand Prize in the Gateway to Sedona Art Competition I had to sit down, and when I was informed it was for the painting “Buried Sins”, I was surprised and grateful at the same moment. The painting is a complicated piece in that it is both unconventional and unusual in subject matter.”

Sedona Ukulele Posse

Jam Together in the Art Barn as Part of our Local Community Music Force! Last year, with the help of Jerome’s musical stalwart, Tommy Anderson, and several dozen local ukulele players, we founded a new musical force. This year, the Sedona Ukulele Posse continues with play-along sessions in the Art Barn on the first Wednesday of each month. Muster in Uptown’s legendary creative spot to pick, strum, sing, and share a few songs together. The Arts Center’s favorite music-maker, Debbie Winslow, will greet you at the door and guide participants into each session. New members are always welcome to join the Ukulele Posse and become part of the fun. We even have a few spare instruments and tuners for those just starting out. Learn how to jam with Sedona Arts Center by contacting Debbie Winslow at 928-282-3809, and mark your calendar for the First Wednesday musical force!

Sedona Summer Colony Last summer, we planted something special in the high elevation desert. In partnership with Verde Valley School, the Arts Center began an experiment to establish America’s next great residency program for artists, creative producers, and cultural managers. Over 130 of them came—with pioneering spirit and abundance of energy—to spend part of their June and July at the brand new Sedona Summer Colony. Housed on the School’s singular red rock campus, our inaugural residents were provided with time, space, meals, and lodging—and new connections to Sedona’s environment, heritage, and people. Slam poet Christopher Johnson arrived from Rhode Island. Musician Chris Lott came down from Seattle. San Francisco-based Melissa Wyman brought eight other contemporary artists from the Bay Area. Brazilian painter Ernesto Kunde made the journey from Miami. Playwright Doug Jacobs drove across the desert from Los Angeles to be here. Visual artist Dave Edgar spanned the globe from Hobart, Tasmania to study our red rock geology. By all accounts, their experiences were extraordinary and profound—filled with unexpected epiphanies. It took a village to make our Summer Colony possible. We were blessed with generous supporters, amazing volunteers, wonderful community potluck contributors, and external partners. Generous people and organizations throughout the Verde Valley hosted, educated, and expanded the guest-host relationship and shared their resources openly. As a result, our community found a new way to facilitate new artistic works by choreographers, film-makers, sculptors, poets, journalists, painters and critical thinkers. Over an eight week period, Sedona inspired, encouraged, and advanced 21st century cultural production—and became a profound part of the creative process. As we look to the 2017 Summer Colony, Sedona Arts Center and Verde Valley School invite you to become part of this bold vision for residency, exchange, and cultural collaboration. Sponsor an artist, apply for the program, volunteer for next summer’s crew. Help us grow Sedona Summer Colony—and exciting creative ideas—right here in our own backyard. Learn how by calling the Arts Center’s Executive Director, Eric Holowacz, at 928-282-3809.

Enhancing Our Historic Campus

Watch Us Make Improvements to the Kiln Yard and Garden Thanks to a very generous anonymous supporter, Sedona Arts Center is planning a major enhancement to the Art Barn. Planning is now underway to remake the back corner of the ceramics studio and kiln yard, turning the ramshackle area into a beautiful viewing place for dramatic raku kiln firings, an outdoor break area overlooking the gorgeous red rock vista, and a small venue for intimate presentations and activities. Another upcoming project, in memory of our colleague Sharon Manzke—who passed away in mid-2016—is the creation of a Memorial Hummingbird Garden next to our Gallery building, and in the

campus environs. It is being designed as a place of reflection and a quiet beautiful setting to remember all the creative people we have passed on—the dear members, friends, and colleagues who have helped the Arts Center become a great cultural organization. It’s all part of our board and staff’s desire to improve and enhance everything we have, and evolve our campus in exciting new ways. If you would like to help—or make a donation in support of these and other capital improvements—please contact Executive Director, Eric Holowacz, at 928-282-3809.
