ACTIVITIES

getting the most out of your vacation

| Center and far right photos provided by West Volusia Tourism Advertising Authority

Once you’ve sprayed on sunscreen and started on the book you brought, could life be any better? Well, after the sun and soothing rhythm of the surf have done their job, do you get an inner urge for some excitement, something new to do? Seize the moment and learn to paddleboard or take a guided eco-tour on an airboat. For a healthy start to the day, ride a bike on the hard-packed sand or peddle along a park trail. We have a business that is offering fun and easy electric bicycle rentals, Daytona Electric Bikes. You can ride farther and best of all, they deliver right to your door, in the Daytona Beach vicinity, for free! For anytime fun there is a Daytona Arcade Museum located downtown on Beach St., to actively play all day. The Daytona Arcade Museum is a hands-on Arcade & Pinball museum showcasing the Golden Age of ’70s and ’80s, featuring more than 100 playable games. More inside fun

can be found at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, Planetarium, the Root Family Museum and the Cici & Hyatt Brown Florida art collection. Spend the day and explore! For more ideas about what to do, check out the Calendar of Events on pages 32 & 33 and have a wonderful time! There are more than 25 top rated golf courses in the area, so it’s easy to tee up some action. If fishing is your game, go offshore for sea trout and mackerel or try river fishing in the calm Intracoastal. A trip to one of the historic sites rewards curious minds with enlightening facts about the Timucuan Indian civilization and the lively colonial, steamboat and railroad eras. One of our best preserved landmarks is the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, Florida’s tallest beacon. The exhilarating Climb to the Moon tour is spectacular on the night of the full moon!

DeLand Wings One of DeLand's most photographed locations is located in an alley in the 100 block of S. Woodland Blvd. What started off as an impulsive chalk drawing by artist Erica Group, is now a beautiful painting of a set of angel wings. Look for the wings, take a selfie & post your pic on facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #DelandWings. (grid AA-6)

Murals of DeLand Take a step back in time and go on a historical tour, a Mural walk if you will, down the streets of Historic DeLand. See memories of the city's past painted on the walls (15 in total)- each one tells a different story. You can download a Mural Walk brochure, with a map showing the location of each work of art. www.MainstreetDeland.org. (grid AA-6)

Eldora House This house is one of a few remaining artifacts of earlier life (built c. 1913) in a small waterfront community on Mosquito Lagoon. The town of 100 people existed between 1877 and 1900. The city's decline began after three freezes during the late 1880s and 1890s that destroyed the town's citrus crops. After 1910, the Eldora "State" House was built. Open Fri. – Sun., 12 – 4 p.m., located in N. District of Canaveral National Seashore, 386-428-3384. (grid FF/GG - 8)

The Sugar Mill Ruins Once a highly functional sugar mill, built during the early 19th century. This 17 acre historic site contains the sugar mill, as well as other buildings, which were destroyed during the war between the Seminole Indians and the United States. Sugar Mill Ruins, 600 Mission Dr., 386-427-2284. (grid FF/GG - 8)

Turtle Mound This prehistoric archaeological site dates back to more than 14,000 years ago and was created by the Timucuan Indian civilization over a period of several hundred years. This kitchen midden is made up of oyster shell remains and resembles the shape of a turtle, hence the name. Follow a park trail to its peak as it leads to a spectacular panoramic view of the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, 386-428-3384, www.NPS.gov/cana/index.htm. DINING

a world of dining choices

When you are in a carefree vacation state of mind, you want the foods that please you most. In the Daytona Beach area you’ll find outstanding fare and menus designed to please taste buds of every description. Local chefs are renowned for serving fresh Florida seafood that is as healthy as it is delicious. Everything seems more delicious when watching a sunset from a dock, enjoying a beach scene, or catching the breeze on a deck above a marina on the river. Our favorite starters are clams, oysters and jumbo shrimp fresh from Florida waters. Add a cold beer or a glass of chilled white wine to celebrate being here! Relaxing over lunch is a vacation ritual, whether it’s a juicy burger smothered with onions and cheese, a platter of open pit barbeque or a grilled grouper sandwich served in a basket.

Tiki Hut overlooking the Caribbean Jack’s has a Halifax River and marina, to get you in that ‘tropical’ mood. Plus, experience the quality of national brands in their 'easy on the pocket' selection of local Florida spirits and Beers. Also visit Rose Villa Southern Table & Bar, in Ormond chefs that have a special flair Beach. Ask about their and offer the most unique tasty menu. If your taste buds are craving something different, a wide choice of restaurants serve authentic Italian, Japanese, Hawaiian or Mexican cuisine. Check out the Dining Grid on pages 38-39 for more dining ideas to suit your every mood. At night you’ll find many restaurants offer live entertainment and don’t go home without satisfying that sweet tooth with a slice of creamy Key Lime pie, or anything chocolate—the perfect way to end the night on a high note.
