Still Life and Landscape Artist Jessie Cook, current resident of Palm Coast Florida, started painting and drawing at an early age before detouring into the publishing world, where she was a fiction editor and “rewrite doctor” for various major New York publishing firms. Her return to art included study with Sherry Camhy and Ric Del Rossi of The Art Students League of New York, John Philip Osborne of the Ridgewood Art Institute, and Mary Anna Goetz of the Woodstock School of Art. Following her 2005 move to Florida, she now pursues art full-time as a painter of still life and landscape in oil. She has exhibited in numerous shows and galleries in Northeast Florida, as well as in juried plein air events. Her memberships include Oil Painters of America, Florida Women’s Arts Association, Landscape Artists International, Plein Air Florida, Plein Air Artists of Saint Augustine, Saint Augustine Art Association, Rockland Center for the Arts, and Ridgewood Art Institute. Photographer Cathryn Griffith juxtaposes early 1900’s hand-colored postcard images of Havana city scenes with recent color photographs of the contemporary scenes, taken from the same vantage point. Griffith culled the historical images from her collection of over 700 vintage postcards of Havana, and made the corresponding photographs during multiple trips to Cuba in recent years.

The best way to experience Florida’s outdoors is by canoe, kayak or bicycle. It’s never boring and you’ll get a healthy workout too. You don’t have to go far to see a different ecosystem in Florida, the scenery can change within a mile or two, so get moving and start exploring! At Anastasia State Park bikers can ride on four miles of smooth, pristine beach at low tide when the sand is firm. Peddlers can leisurely ride through maritime forest on miles of park roads with bike lanes and low speed limits. Stop to see the quarry where coquina was mined to build the Castillo San Marcos in St. Augustine. Paddlers can launch a canoe on a tranquil lagoon bordered by coastal marshes. The camp store and grille offers sandwiches and affordable bike and canoe rentals. Pellicer Creek in Faver-Dykes State Park flows to the Matanzas River. Paddle from an oak hammock through pine flatwoods to tidal affected salt marsh. Along the creek look for river otters, wading birds, ospreys, bald eagles and an occasional dolphin. At Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, the short Jungle Road is a hiking biking trail through canopied coastal scrub where you may spot deer and Gopher Tortoises.
