Still Life and Landscape Artist Jessie Cook, current resident of Palm Coast Florida, started painting and drawing at an early age before detouring into the publishing world, where she was a fiction editor and “rewrite doctor” for various major New York publishing firms. Her return to art included study with Sherry Camhy and Ric Del Rossi of The Art Students League of New York, John Philip Osborne of the Ridgewood Art Institute, and Mary Anna Goetz of the Woodstock School of Art. Following her 2005 move to Florida, she now pursues art full-time as a painter of still life and landscape in oil. She has exhibited in numerous shows and galleries in Northeast Florida, as well as in juried plein air events. Her memberships include Oil Painters of America, Florida Women’s Arts Association, Landscape Artists International, Plein Air Florida, Plein Air Artists of Saint Augustine, Saint Augustine Art Association, Rockland Center for the Arts, and Ridgewood Art Institute. Additional information is available at her website: www.jessiefineart.com “My paintings are a way to be still, and to look. Both for myself and, I hope, for the viewer.”

After spending some time relaxing by the pool, you’re
probably ready to get out there and see the sights in the Daytona Beach area. There are many exhilarating ways to have fun near the water, from surfing and parasailing to taking a cruise on the Intracoastal. Take a walk or a bicycle ride along the beach in the morning for a great feeling of well being that will last all day. We encourage you to mix it up a bit. The Daytona International Speedway is always popular with race fans, but for awesome thrills, take a spin around a go-kart track. Curious travelers will enjoy touring historic homes and museums featuring art, science, history and photography. Climb the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum for a bird’s eye view of the seacoast and nature preserves. For a closer look at seabirds, stingrays that you can touch and other marvels of the sea, visit the Marine Science Center for interactive fun.
“Casting” Artist: Jessie Cook
It’s easy to tee up some action at one of the many golf courses along our shore. Both courses at LPGA
International are highly rated for their playability and exceptional natural settings. If you haven’t played lately, take a workshop at one of the world famous links designed by legends of the sport. More than 25 golf courses are within 30 minutes of the beach, and your hotel can usually arrange starting times for you. Fishing along the Halifax River is enjoyable whether you rent a boat or fish from a pier. For those who enjoy challenging offshore fishing for yellowfin tuna and marlin, deep sea charters are available. Listening to the sound of the waves in the evening, you may wish you could seal the day in a bottle and take it home. So take photos along the way to remind you of all the wonderful moments of your vacation.

offered at both the Museum of Arts and Sciences and the Southeast Museum of Photography. History lovers will delight in details about Timucuan Indians, Spanish explorers, the Civil War and vintage toys at the Halifax Historical Museum. Spend some time exploring performing arts spaces in the Daytona Beach area, Ormond Beach, Downtown Deland and the quaint village of New Smyrna Beach. We invite you to discover the many famous sites listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, including the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum. A visit to the home of Mary McLeod Bethune is an intimate look at the 20th Century through her personal effects and memorabilia awarded to her by three presidents or tour historic Gamble Place on Spruce Creek. Explore old plantation ruins, revisit the steamboat era at DeBary Hall, or stroll through Lilian Place, a Victorian mansion on Daytona Beach. The area hosts top singers, Broadway shows, classical music concerts and special performances at the Peabody Auditorium, Ocean Center and other popular venues. New facilities include Cinematique in downtown Daytona Beach and the Florida Museum for Women Artists in DeLand. 2011-12 CHANGING EXHIBITS REFLECTIONS II: Watercolors of Florida 1835 - 2000, from the Collection of Cici and Hyatt Brown November 13, 2011 - March 25, 2012
The most comprehensive and prestigious collection of Florida Watercolors opens at MOAS this fall. The exhibition, as well as the accompanying definitive volume of the same name, presents a broad, full-color survey of watercolors of Florida in all styles, cataloging 168 years by the most significant artists working in Florida – and includes examples within Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Ashcan, Regionalism, Modernism and varieties of Abstraction.
GREEK AND RUSSIAN ICONS From the MOAS Collections TOGETHER WITH ILLUMINATED MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE MANUSCRIPTS From the Collection of Ronald R. McCarty December 15, 2011 - March 18, 2012 GREEK AND RUSSIAN ICONS FROM THE MOAS COLLECTIONS: The iconic visions of Russian and Greek saints and the historic stories of the saints themselves are beautifully and strikingly represented in this lovely grouping, depicting both miraculous stories of the past and the rich heritage of both nations. ILLUMINATED MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE MANUSCRIPTS FROM THE COLLECTION OF RONALD R. MCCARTY: The art of embellishing hand-scribed books and manuscripts with colored, gold and silver margins and pictorial ornamental letters is exquisitely presented in this rare collection of text leaves, Biblical miniatures and Books of Hours.
THREE CENTURIES OF INTERNATIONAL DECORATIVE ARTS, PAINTINGS AND OTHER EXOTICA March, 2012 - November 4, 2012
Through comparative and contrasted examples, this exhibition traces and illustrates European influences and original designs on the arts and craftsmanship developed in America in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The satin sheen and rarity of tropic woods, of gilded timepieces and the glint of silken textiles represent the lush textures and visual harmony of the artifacts on display, whereas a variety of painted artworks set our hearts and minds aflame.
HAVANA REVISITED: AN ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE April 6, 2012 - July 8, 2012
Photographer Cathryn Griffith juxtaposes early 1900’s hand-colored postcard images of Havana city scenes with recent color photographs of the contemporary scenes, taken from the same vantage point. Griffith culled the historical images from her collection of over 700 vintage postcards of Havana, and made the corresponding photographs during multiple trips to Cuba in recent years.
THE MANY FACES OF GEORGE WASHINGTON May 14, 2012 - June 25, 2012 This exhibition, made up of interpretive panels, looks at Washington’s leadership in the exhibition’s seven sections: Virginia Childhood, Risk Taker, Realistic Visionary, Wise Decision Maker, Impassioned Learner, Visionary Entrepreneur, and At Home at Mount Vernon. Provides background and insight into our nation’s first president, a man whom many recognize but few know much about. Spanning Washington’s entire life, the exhibition focuses on the traits that made him a beloved leader and the choices that helped establish a stable democratic government.
OLD MASTER DRAWINGS FROM THE JOHN AND MABLE RINGLING MUSEUM OF ART November 16, 2012 - February 10, 2013
Examples of the importance and beauty of Old Master Drawings illustrating that “there is no form of creative expression that is more spontaneous and beautiful than the art of drawing” (Richard Kenin, The Art of Drawing, N.Y., 1974). The intimacy and concentrated power of such art works as Bernadino Campi’s preparatory drawing for his The Holy Family with St. Lucy and the lyric beauty of Romano’s Head of St. Joseph are but two representative examples of this famed collection, culled from the State Art Museum of Florida.

new smyrna beach
New Smyrna Beach is an old-time coastal town
where the lifestyle is artsy and laid back. The Flagler Avenue merchants have preserved the picturesque buildings that give it an inviting bohemian atmosphere. The five-block “main drag” from ocean to river is an intriguing neighborhood and a popular gathering place. The beach side of town is also a magnet for shoppers looking for art, handmade clothing and collectibles – without the crowds you came to escape. If you work up an appetite while browsing there is an eclectic selection of restaurants mixed in with the colorfully painted shops and galleries. A local favorite restaurant, the Grille at Riverview, is known for casual, delicious cuisine served on the water’s edge. New Smyrna has 13 miles of powder-white sand, natural dunes and tidal pools that harbor tiny sea creatures. It’s connected to the mainland by only two causeways, and to the south, it’s protected by the pristine Canaveral National Seashore. The Indian River and coastal estuaries are famous for excellent backwater fishing and kayaking. Free-spirited artists have always been drawn to

local dining
a world of dining choices Your taste buds will thank you when
you select a local seafood specialty from the menu. Fish fillets, shrimp, clams and oysters fresh from the Atlantic Ocean are beyond the ordinary and always a perfect choice. Seafood served as you like it—broiled, baked, blackened, or pan sautéed—is as healthy as it is delicious. You can always dine casually and still find a world of choices including fresh and simple American fare. Whether you’re served on an open-air deck on the river or the beach, a restaurant with umbrella tables overlooking a marina or anywhere in between, delicious food is one of the rewards of being in the Daytona Beach area. When you want something that’s a bit

different, choose a restaurant that serves a variety of appetizers and a choice of Asian, Mexican, Cuban or Italian cuisine. Our skilled chefs take pride in using fresh herbs, Florida vegetables and savory sauces with shrimp or chicken that can transform a meal into a delicious memory. Plenty of specialties await you at the restaurants listed in this book, so take your pick and prepare to be impressed. Fried shrimp or grouper sandwiches served with crisp hush puppies are good at lunch, dinner or any time in between. It’s a sure bet there’s good food to be found at one of our popular grills or sports bars. A rack of slow-cooked barbecued ribs satisfies a hearty appetite, and a New York strip steak can’t be beat after an active day outdoors. At night take a walk on the beach until you find one of the restaurants with an all weather deck and live music for dancing. A stroll is also a perfect excuse to stop for an ice cream cone or order a slice of key lime pie with two forks! . www.SEE-DaytonaBeach.com

Welcome to St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city
and a gateway to 42 miles sparkling sand beaches and year-round outdoor activities. As you approach the city, it may look like a European town, but it’s a modern 21st century city with fashionable stores, galleries, nightclubs and award-winning restaurants. Ponce de Leon set foot here in 1513, and according to legend, he tasted the sulfur-flavored water that bubbles out of the spring at the present day Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. Numerous archeological digs have proved it’s where Pedro Menendez de Avilés brought 800 settlers from Spain in 1565 and also the site of a Native Timucuan village. The park’s adept interpreters tell the whole story through a Planetarium show, fascinating demonstrations, and to everyone’s delight, the roar of cannon fire on the waterfront. Notably, the Europeans invited the Timucuans to their Thanksgiving celebration 42 years before the Jamestown settlement

The first view of St. Augustine’s spires
and bell towers will be the beginning of an exhilarating ride if you love history. Every narrow street in the Old City is lined with historic buildings that reveal the fortitude of Spanish and English colonialists, American settlers, railroad men and pirates. The St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, the life’s work of a collector, is loaded with authentic artifacts, interactive adventure and shipwreck treasure. cypress and marvel at copies of lesson books. The Lightner Museum, located in the former
1887 Hotel Alcazar, offers collections of Tiffany glass, Victorian artifacts and brilliant cut glass. The St. Augustine Art Association has been a cultural hub since 1924. Its galleries offer juried art exhibits by emerging and established artists and a collection of “Lost Colony” art. The Annual Thanksgiving Art & Craft Festival is a must see. Golfers can tee off at one of the nearby courses designed by such world champions as Sam Sneed and Jack Nicklaus. At The World Golf Hall of Fame, guided tours feature legendary golfers like Nancy Lopez and Bob Hope. The memorabilia and photographs of famous golf personalities entertain everyone who enjoys a walk down memory lane. Climb the St. Augustine Lighthouse for a panoramic view of the nation’s oldest port and sparkling coastal waterways. Now you know why year-round fishing is just minutes away! While you’re here, take advantage of the parks and nature preserves that offer ranger guided eco-walks. Enjoy a quiet walk in the outdoors with binoculars for bird watching—there are 260 local and migrating species in the area. At Anastasia State Park rent bicycles to pedal along quiet park roads and the beach. If cemetery walks and chilling tales of spirits lurking about don’t keep you awake at night, take a ghost tour…sweet dreams!

The best way to experience Florida’s outdoors is by canoe, kayak or bicycle. It’s never boring and you’ll get a healthy workout too. You don’t have to go far to see a different ecosystem in Florida, the scenery can change within a mile or two, so get moving and start exploring! At Anastasia State Park bikers can ride on four miles of smooth, pristine beach at low tide when the sand is firm. Peddlers can leisurely ride through maritime forest on miles of park roads with bike lanes and low speed limits. Stop to see the quarry where coquina was mined to build the Castillo San Marcos in St. Augustine. Paddlers can launch a canoe on a tranquil lagoon bordered by coastal marshes. The camp store and grille offers sandwiches and affordable bike and canoe rentals. Pellicer Creek in Faver-Dykes State Park flows to the Matanzas River. Paddle from an oak hammock through pine flatwoods to tidal affected salt marsh. Along the creek look for river otters, wading birds, ospreys, bald eagles and an occasional dolphin. Canoes and kayaks are available by advanced reservation. At Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, the short Jungle Road is a hiking biking trail through canopied coastal scrub where you may spot deer and Gopher Tortoises. The Old A1A trail is a paved road shaded by oaks that’s an easy ride for children. Leave bikes in the rack to walk through the gardens. Seasonal camellias, azaleas, roses and ancient oaks stand out among the ponds and fountains. Ride across A1A and climb the dune crossover to see the unusual golden beach strewn with coquina rocks. An afternoon of shopping in the historic district of
St. Augustine has a lot in common with a treasure hunt— full of discoveries! It’s a remarkable place to find old maps, French and English antiques, nautical artifacts, vintage collectibles and fine art. Along the narrow byways you’ll also find specialty shops that carry an excellent assortment of clothing, precious gem jewelry and the latest trends in attractive accessories for the home. It’s always a pleasure to meander down St. George Street and browse through shops located in quaint old buildings because there are no vehicles on this pedestrian friendly street. The oldest locally owned clothing store, H.W. Davis Co., has thrived here since 1894. It offers select ladies’ and men’s sportswear, quality shoes and accessories with brand names you will recognize. Within walking distance of the Plaza, are art galleries displaying sculpture, photography and paintings

by nationally known and emerging artists. Aviles Street is the oldest byway in the city and one of the prettiest.
Sidewalks have room for café tables and benches near chic clothing boutiques and galleries offering artworks and handmade arts and crafts. This narrow bricked street is credited with inspiring the sister city cultural agreement with Avilés, Spain. Wherever you ramble you’re never far from a café where you can relax and have lunch or a sweet homemade dessert. If you find a special purchase to remember your trip by, many of our shops will ship it home for you. Out toward the beach along A1A are stores that go beyond swimwear, offering everything you’ll need to update your resort wardrobe, from totes and sunglasses to cover-ups. Just a short drive away are the outlet malls for those who want designer labels at bargain prices. Wherever you shop in the area, it’s possible you will stumble upon a real treasure to take home!
