A native of France, Christophe Cardot grew up in a French countryside with fields of sunflowers and fresh raspberries as inspirations of color. Cardot arrived in Florida in 2003 to pursue his dream of a full time art career and tells his story with his works. After working with pastels and acrylics for years, Cardot now paints mostly with oil paints. Using only the six colors of light, which are seen in a rainbow, allows him to keep his colors in harmony with nature. Primarily self-taught, he has studied with several well-respected artists statewide and nationally. After becoming a professional artist, he won more than fifty awards during the first six years. He recently had an exhibition in New York City with the World Tour of Contemporary Landscape Artists. Cardot uses the Golden Ratio to create his compositions and the Impressionists palette. He has been invited to participate in Florida “Plein Air” paint-outs, and his paintings can be found in collections throughout the United States and Europe. Teaching painting classes and giving workshops are an enjoyment for him. He is a member of the International Plein Air Painters, World Tour of Contemporary Landscapes Artists and American Impressionists Society and has received a grant to take a workshop with a Master Pastelist.

turtle nesting season begins in May, runs through October

The yellow markers and netting mean a sea turtle has deposited her eggs in the sand! All sea turtles are endangered, but Loggerheads are most commonly seen on our beaches. Hatchlings—only about 2 inches long—wait until the sand cools at night before scrambling to the water where they spend several years in floating beds of seaweed. Green turtles and huge Leatherbacks also nest on Florida shores. Turtles don’t reach maturity for 15 to 50 years. Scientists believe that only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 babies will survive to adulthood.

Don’t disturb a turtle that is crawling on the beach or laying eggs. Watch from a distance of at least 30 feet. Avoid shining lights on the beach at night as this may frighten nesting females and confuse the hatchlings’ ability to find the sea. All manatees, also known as sea cows, are herbivores and aquatic relatives of the elephant. You will find them locally in our warmer 68° spring waters in the winter.
