Visitor & Event Information

Carl Miller has been painting for over twenty years. His artistic career started as a photographer soon after graduating from the University of North Florida. First, he worked with several newspapers, then he started his own freelance photography business.

Fishing

Miller noticed his photography was taking on a more artistic ‘painterly’ quality, so he decided to learn how to paint. He studied first with watercolorist Bill Leonard, acquiring the fundamentals of composition and color theory. Then, he moved to painting in oils, on location or “Plein Air” (in the open air), with local artist Joe Taylor. Painting on the narrow downtown streets of St. Augustine gave him more experience and diversity.

Miller was welcomed into the St. Augustine art scene and began showing his work in galleries. Some fellow artists that influenced him were Charles Dickinson, Beau Redmond, Heidi Edwards and Eddie White- to name a few. Miller continues to operate his photography business, but always finds time to paint. Downtown scenes, salt marshes and the beaches where he lives are his favorite subjects.. Miller’s work can be seen at Amiro Art & Found on Aviles St. and he can be contacted at carlmiller.us@gmail.com.

After you’ve visited the St. Augustine

area attractions, immersed yourself in the history, and overstuffed your luggage with unique gifts, it’s time to experience the local cuisine. In St. Augustine, Anastasia Island and the Ponte Vedra Beaches, your dining experience promises to rank among the best in the world. No matter your whim or fancy, you don’t have to look far to find the perfect eating establishment to satisfy your craving. Dining options abound. There are eateries tucked away in every corner, from quaint cafés where you can people watch and enjoy soft music and sumptuous appetizers, to more elegant waterfront dining where the catch of the day is served with respect for the contributions from our beautiful Atlantic Ocean. It’s not unusual to dine waterfront and see dolphins frolicking in the water. Of course, you are never lacking for entertainment when you people watch from a sidewalk café. Dreaming of having freshly harvested oysters on the half shell accompanied by vegetables just plucked from the garden? Stop dreaming! When it comes to food, the fresher the better seems to be the mantra in St. Augustine. Distinctly Florida fare is everywhere. Don’t be surprised to find bursting-with-flavor black-bean and mango salsa

Prices range from inexpensive to pricier and most all feel like romantic hot spots. Most everything else falls somewhere in between. Most places have a ‘come as you are’ atmosphere drawing the line at needing shirts, cover-ups and footwear for everyone. Photography and the Beach All beach shots don’t need to look the same. For a different perspective go to the ocean and turn around to shoot from that angle. But find a point of interest, a place for your eye to rest and enjoy the memory of what you captured. Maybe a pattern in the sand, waves crashing over feet and ever so popular the colorful lifeguard stand in the early morning. Try black and white. Note the impact no color gives to those dull overcast days. Not colorless at all, but different. Protect your camera from the salty air and wet hands. At the end of your day on the beach carefully clean with a soft cloth and brush to get rid of the salt, sand and dust. Be especially cautious when changing lenses, batteries and memory cards. You can imagine what a grain of sand can do. Keep a supply of clean zip lock bags for safe and easy camera storage. A new one each day is smart, but please recycle properly. If you would like to share your pictures we would love to see them. Post on our Facebook page and we’ll ooh and ahhh with you.

Resort casual style is all about ease! It’s characterized by sundresses, tunics, capris, khakis and chinos, tropical prints, bright colors, sheer fabrics, caftans, boat shoes and flip flops. Speaking of flip flops, did you ever wonder how they became all the rage? Flip flops have been around for six thousand years and were first depicted on Egyptian murals around 4000 BC. They began appearing in America in the 1950s when soldiers brought back Japanese zori (similar to flip flops) as souvenirs. Since then, the designs have changed flip flops have become a pervasive part of Florida beach style, and you’ll even find them on some high fashion runways!

dining out in the Greater Daytona Beach Area: What do you crave? What’s your preferred location? and What do you want to wear? So many choices! While you are here, take plenty of time to explore

the Daytona Beach culinary scene where you will find everything from romantic waterfront restaurants, trendy ethnic plates, sumptuous Sunday brunches, sports bars and more. The place is brimming with palate pleasing selections. Sample everything from mouthwatering steaks

traditional comfort food to the exotic. While the food can be gratifying, atmosphere is everything. Enjoy a panoramic view while dining on the riverfront and watch the boats pass by. A number of indoor and outdoor venues feature live music or experience the ambiance of one of our many family owned restaurants. Prices range from fast food values to the decidedly gourmet and steakhouses. Regardless of cost, for most restaurants, casual wear is the theme.
