Martha Ferguson is an award winning artist with an impressionist flare. She paints in the studio and on location, primarily in watercolor and oil. Having lived in the charming town of Ocean Grove, NJ and now St Augustine, FL, she finds plenty of inspiration. One of her favorite subjects is light, whether it be a light post or the sun as it hits the corners of the old towns. Her favorite time to paint is early in the morning before the sun rises. “Even though the streets are empty, there is a sense you’re not alone. The old lamp posts and narrow streets have so many stories to tell. It’s not enough to capture a likeness, I seek to capture the moment or rekindle a special feeling.” Art has always been a part of Martha’s life. She studied art at the University of Charleston while in high school and graduated Flagler College with a BA in Fine Art. While in St Augustine she was greatly influenced by Emmett Fritz, a local artist who she often encountered painting scenes of St Augustine. It was in those days she fell in love with painting. Martha continued her art education at the Student Art League in NYC and through ongoing workshops. She now offers both private and group lessons in both watercolor and oil. Martha’s recent works can be found at Georgia Nick Gallery gallery on Avilés Street in St. Augustine, FL as well in local venues, shows and online at www.MGFergusonFineArt.com.

St. Augustine’s Cultural travelers are only limited by their curiosity when exploring the historic sites that reveal St. Augustine’s Native American, conquistador, colonial and pirate past. For an overview of the Old City take a romantic horse drawn carriage tour along the city streets and bay front. Along the way you will see colonial dwellings on Aviles Street, stately buildings from the Flagler railroad era and Victorian houses painted in gumdrop colors.

explain why year round fishing is just minutes away. While you’re here, take advantage of the 100 parks and preserves in the area, from Ponte Vedra to Crescent Beach. Peaceful natural areas protect migrating birds, fish and wildlife and offer trails for hiking, bird watching, bicycling and kayaking. For excitement and education be sure to experience your own Marineland Dolphin Adventure. After dark, night spots come to life with an infusion of locals. If chilling tales of pirates lurking in taverns and broken hearted lovers roaming halls at night won’t keep you awake, take a ghost tour…sweet dreams!

Old Town is St. Augustine’s first community and the link to its 16th century origins. Remarkably preserved, this enclave is resplendent with architectural landmarks and beautiful gardens. Fascinating shops, galleries and accommodations are found here too. The narrow brick streets and walkways, stone walls, and overhanging balconies maintain a distinctly European ambience.

Bicycle along our scenic coast... active fun for the family.

S ightseeing is at its best on a bicycle ride with interesting things to see, like boats moving slowly on the Halifax River, pleasant city parks and one of our best-kept secrets, shady trails in the maritime forest at beautiful Tomoka State Park.

In Ormond Beach, a good place to start is the parking lot on the southwest side of the Granada Boulevard Bridge (SR 40). If you ride south, a shared use trail passes through neighborhood parks with swings for children, gazebos where you can stop to rest, and piers where anglers are catching fish. On a mix of sidewalks and paved segments, you can ride as far south as Mason Avenue between Holly Hill and Daytona Beach. If you ride north, follow the sidewalk on the west side of North Beach Street. You’ll ride through an Old Florida neighborhood with large trees that form a tunnel of branches to keep you cool. At Inglesa Avenue a new 1-mile paved path through oak hammocks leads to the entrance of Tomoka State Park. You can explore all of the hard-packed, shady trails on your bicycle, stop for refreshments at the Outpost and even rent a canoe to paddle the Tomoka River. Tomoka State Park: Admission for walkers and bikers is $2 per person; cars $5 for 2-8 people. Information: 386-676 4050. Canoe Outpost rentals: 386-673-0022. Don’t have a bike? Many local bicycle shops will rent them by the day or week.

Whale Watching

January through March ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you see people gathered on the dune crossovers with binoculars, they are probably watching whales. The calving grounds for endangered North Atlantic Right Whales are off our coast, and if you’re lucky, you may see mothers with calves some distance offshore. Volunteer whale spotters help scientists by reporting whale sightings as they migrate from their feeding grounds in the northeastern US to the shallow waters off NE Florida. Scientists believe there are fewer than 500 in the population. Spotters look for a V-shaped blow. High places like dune crossovers and tall buildings give the best views. If you want to learn more, short lectures by author/whale watcher Frank Gromling are offered at Gamble Rogers State Park. Call 386-517-2086 for a schedule. If you spot a whale call 888-979-4253. Sightings are recorded by the Marine Resources Council and sent to a national database. The Council verifies sightings and notifies ships in the area to keep a lookout for whales. Most injuries to whales occur from collisions with ships. The Marineland Right Whale Project (aswh.org) trains volunteers to assist scientists in sightings, however, observers are required by US law to keep a distance of 500 yards. The whale pictured here was born nearby and returned to have her calf in the same area.

Florida artists’ work and collectibles can also be found nearby at Arts on Douglas Fine Art, a unique commercial art gallery located in a district that is a time machine of old-style buildings. The Atlantic Center of the Arts at Harris House is a community center and art gallery in a historic Lutheran parsonage that holds exhibitions of works by prominent Florida artists. Flagler Avenue merchants have preserved historic buildings that give the place a bohemian atmosphere. A patchwork of colorfully painted shops, galleries and eateries offer unique browsing along the five-block “main drag” from ocean to river.

The Interior Gallery displays a chronological view of the area history. Upstairs, there is a collection of artifacts and the Sheldon Research Library contains documents, periodicals, books, maps and historical photographs. Open Tues. – Sat., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., 120 Sams Ave., 386-478-0052, www.NSBHistory.org

2) The Sugar Mill Ruins Once a highly functional sugar mill, built during in the early 19th century. This 17 acre historic site contains the ruins of a the highly functional sugar mill, as well as other buildings, which were destroyed during the war between the Seminole Indians and the United States. Sugar Mill Ruins, 600 Mission Dr., 386-427-2284. 3) Old Fort Park-Turnbull Ruins The Turnbull Ruins are a bit of a mystery. A coquina block foundation overlooking the Intracoastal is said to be the remains of a mansion that was started by Andrew Turnbull from 1766-1777. It's believed that he attempted to build his personal mansion on these coquina remains. Others think the ruins may be the remains of a pre-colonial fort or a colonial church. Located at Washington St. and N. Riverside Dr. 4) Black Heritage Museum The Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum houses photographs, memorabilia and artifacts used to educate citizens and students about the history and race relations in small town Florida. This history dates back to the early 1920s. Open to the public Wed. – Sat., 1 – 4 p.m., 314 N. Duss St., 386-478-1934, www.BlackHeritageMuseum.org 5) Eldora House This house is one of a few remaining artifacts of earlier life (built c. 1913) in a small waterfront community on Mosquito Lagoon. The town of 100 people existed between 1877 and 1900. The city's decline began after three freezes during the late 1880s and 1890s that destroyed the town's citrus crops. After 1910, the Eldora "State" House was built. Open Fri. – Sun., 12 – 4 p.m., located in N. District of Canaveral National Seashore, 386-428-3384. 6) Turtle Mound This prehistoric archaeological site dates back to over 14,000 years ago and was created by the Timucuan Indian civilization over a period of several hundred years. This kitchen midden is made up of oyster and shellfish remains and can be seen seven miles out at sea and resembles the shape of a turtle, hence the name Turtle Mound. It stands 50 feet tall and covers two acres. Located in Canaveral National Seashore Park, a trail to its peak leads to a spectacular panoramic view of the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, 386-428-3384, www.NPS.gov/cana/index.htm Numbers relate to adjacent map for locations. www.SEE-DaytonaBeach.com

local dining

a world of dining choices Taste buds go on flavor patrol for cuisine that’s beyond the ordinary when you are on vacation. Not necessarily for the exotic, but for gratifying food. Also you want it served in friendly surroundings. Sometimes that’s a view of a marina on the Halifax River, a lively street scene or breakers rolling on the beach. Southern cooking is always appreciated here and slow-cooked barbeque satisfies the appetites of almost everyone. But for a sense of adventure, dine in a restaurant offering cuisine with roots in Caribbean, Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish and French

Wine & Food Pairing P

art of the fun in wine tasting is deciding what you find is delicious. Everyone has a different set of taste buds, so drink the wines you like with the food you like.

I

nstead of red with meat, white with fish, think about balancing flavors. For example, pair delicately flavored foods with lightbodied wines. A lightly flavored fish calls for a crisp, light white wine. Deeper flavored salmon calls for a flavorful, buttery white wine. Bold, spicy foods require a full-bodied wine that’s slightly sweet and full of flavor. Seasoned dishes like pasta and savory meats are balanced with a rich, robust red wine.
