ST. AUGUSTINE, PONTE VEDRA & BEACHES
The oldest continuous settlement in the United States and a romantic getaway for those who love stories of the past
ON FLORIDA’S HISTORIC COAST
St. Augustine is celebrating the 500th Anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s famous discovery of this beautiful shore as he sailed toward the Keys in April 1513. Within a few years, in 1565, the first settlement was founded by Pedro Menendez de Aviles. At the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park, you’ll see how native people lived successfully here for over 4,000 years before the Spanish explorers arrived. At the NEW exhibit of Native Village structures built with traditional methods, you’ll see demonstrations of their skills with food, crafts and weapons for hunting. Look for more NEW icons inside the pages of this SEE Insider’s Guide for interesting things to do, and keep it handy for the maps and valuable coupons offered by businesses and merchants. Check out
2
EXTRAS on pages 14-15 for our favorite parks and historic places that are free or inexpensive. It’s our way of helping you get the most out of your vacation. Almost everything you do here is touched by romance at night, music floats out from many doorways, people chat over a meal at sidewalk tables and strings of tiny lights cast a subtle glow above the streets. Don’t forget to explore outlying areas, including 42 miles of stunning, golden sand beaches and pristine parks. This is a perfect time to paddle, pedal or hike in our nature preserves—the only limit is your curiosity! Live, love, and enjoy St. Augustine!

A wealth of
CTIVITIES for you to TRY
The heart of the city is the Plaza de la Constitucion, a shady square where people have met for more than 400 years. The Government House, which is easily recognized by its balcony overlooking Cordova Street, is a good place to begin exploring. You can walk in any direction from here, but for an overview of the Old City, climb aboard the trolley for a narrated tour. As you roll along there’s plenty of opportunity to hear about the colonial buildings, intriguing streetscapes and grand hotels. Many buildings are now museums. Large and small, they are full of intriguing antiques, artifacts and interactive fun. It’s easy to spot the Spanish style buildings that hold the life’s work of wealthy collectors at Villa Zorayda, the Lightner Museum and the Pirate & Treasure Museum. Pick your pleasure; each one is a fantastic journey to the past. This is a year-round paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who like to paddle pristine creeks, fish in either fresh or salt water or sail with the breeze. Climb 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse to see a panorama of the nation’s oldest seaport, the Matanzas River and miles of Atlantic beaches. Visitors to the World Golf Hall of Fame, known for courses designed by Sam
6
Snead and Jack Nicklaus, will see a NEW "History in the Making” exhibit that features memorabilia fresh from the fairways of professional golf events. At the Pirate and Treasure Museum, Sir Frances Drake’s expeditions are finding NEW life in an exhibit that includes a rare burnt wooden remnant from a 16th century ship attributed to him. Drake raided and burnt St. Augustine to the ground in 1586. Romantics will want to end the day with a slow-paced carriage ride along the oldest byways, and if ghosts don’t scare you, take a tour to learn about restless spirits that still roam the city…sweet dreams!

Romantic Places to Propose St. Augustine is renowned for proposals and celebrating anniversaries because so many couples have strolled together near the Old Fort and pledged their love. Some choose a helicopter ride at sunset. The city glows and beautiful beaches are spread before you. Hovering high above the land, there’s a moment when everything seems possible. The top of the lighthouse is another choice, but the classic one is a quiet carriage ride through the city. When the moment is right, pop the question. Then come back on your anniversary!

INING
When it’s time to decide where to eat, foodies know St. Augustine’s chefs are renowned for innovative menus and creative dishes. Memorable meals are close at hand in almost any setting you can imagine, from European styled bistros in the historic district, to outlying restaurants with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. At casual restaurants you can relax at an umbrella table on a dock and be served a juicy burger or delicious seafood fresh from the Atlantic. One of our favorites is a grilled grouper sandwich served in a basket with fries and washed down with a frosty mug of beer. Actually, a Florida seafood appetizer— shrimp, clams or oysters—is a good start to any meal. But if your taste runs to Cajun, Asian, Italian or slow smoked Southern barbeque, we have that too. It’s easy to add a measure of romance to any evening by dining on the veranda of a Victorian home or in an old building

where candlelight shadow-dances on aged bricks. There are garden settings, wine cellars, decks overlooking the water and elegant hotel dining rooms furnished with a nod to the gilded era tastes of Henry Flagler. St. Augustine was the capital of Spanish La Florida for more than 250 years after Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded it in 1565. Spanish traditions still influence dining here in contemporary versions of chilled gazpacho soup and paella, a rice dish with vegetables and bits of meat or seafood. If you crave something different, order a traditional Minorcan dish made with the Datil pepper, which was brought here in the 1600s and only grows in the St. Augustine area. In the evening try the traditional way to end a meal and enjoy a cup of coffee and flan, a sweet Spanish egg custard. Bon appétit!

with a fresh taste that tingles on your tongue. It originated back in the 19th century in Key West. with everything you need for outdoor activities. For those who love to shop for designer labels at bargain prices, an upscale outlet mall is a short drive away. Put on your best flip-flops and check it out.
Known for specialty shops, vintage treasures and antiques, St. Augustine is also a place to find an excellent assortment of contemporary clothing and precious gem jewelry. Within walking distance are shops displaying handcrafted ceramics, lace, linens plus teas and spices imported from around the globe. It’s fun to browse galleries displaying photography and paintings celebrating Florida's beauty, and if you find a special purchase to remember your trip by, many of our shops will ship it home for you.
For more than thirty years, Saturday has been the day shoppers head for the St. Augustine Flea Market. Open all weekend, it is a true, old-fashioned marketplace where you can buy a straw hat, fresh baked muffins or an antique. Pick hydroponically grown strawberries, herbs and seasonal vegetables at the NEW U-pick 1-acre vertical farm on site. It doesn’t get fresher than this!
The oldest bricked byway in the city, Aviles Street, has old styled lampposts and comfortable benches that give shoppers a chance to relax a while. It was the inspiration for a sister city agreement connecting St. Augustine with Aviles, Spain, years ago. The restaurants with outside seating distinguish this street as one not to be missed. Beyond the city along A1A, a full spectrum of beach shops are stocked

Marineland, a Florida icon, has been bringing dolphin awareness to the public for 75 years. Originally created as Marine Studios in 1938, it has provided many “firsts” in underwater films and dolphin care. In its early years as Florida’s number one attraction, guests were entertained by educational stadium shows highlighting “educated porpoises.” In 2006 a new and modern facility opened with the focus on intimate and educational dolphin interactions. In 2011 Georgia Aquarium of Atlanta acquired the park, expanded exhibits and unveiled new guest experiences with the much-loved dolphins.
