ST. AUGUSTINE, PONTE VEDRA & BEACHES On Florida’s Historic Coast
Welcome to St. Augustine, North America’s oldest city. Here you can go back in time without sacrificing modern amenities. It’s where the past meets the present and both coexist in harmony. Walk the streets of the Ancient City and watch history come alive. Immerse yourself in the city that Juan Ponce de León might have envisioned. Experience the past as you shop, dine, and play on the streets where railroad magnate Henry Flagler once walked. SEE Insider’s Guide is chock full of valuable coupons from local businesses and merchants. Also find detailed maps to make navigation to any attraction a breeze. To find the latest goings-on, look for NEW icons in this issue. If you are searching for a NEW experience, watch as a modern day shipwright at the Colonial Quarter builds a 16th century caravel, a small ship used by the Spanish and was considered the workhorse of it's time. The project will take seven years to complete, but when finished, the 55 foot caravel will be a sight to behold. Pedro
2
Menéndez had one as part of his fleet when he sailed to the New World to settle the St. Augustine Colony, making the boat a special part of local history. A variety of dining and shopping experiences await and there are enough activities to keep you busy for weeks. Take some time to explore the area outside the old city where even more treasured experiences await. Find your own piece of paradise along 42 miles of sandy beaches or discover one of our many parks where you can hike, bike, kayak or just lie back and absorb the ambiance. Don’t forget to check out EXTRAS on pages 14-15. It’s jam packed with free or inexpensive activities and historic places of interest. No matter what you choose to do or see, you will create memories of St. Augustine that will last for years to come.

S A R T X E AROUND TOWN The Old Spanish Trail Zero Mile Marker connects the past to the present. It marks the completion of the transcontinental auto trail that once connected St. Augustine to San Diego, CA. Be sure to look for it near the Old City’s Welcome Center. It was dedicated in 1928 and remains a popular spot for photos. 904-825-1000. Aviles Street is the heartbeat of this ancient city. Located smack in the center of the historic district, it is a quiet respite from the surrounding hustle and bustle. Dine in a quaint cafÊ, or shop for distinctive gift items, all while strolling the street where you are surrounded by architectural treasures and immersed in history. The St. Augustine Marketplace and Flea Market is a must visit for shopping enthusiasts and those in search of the traditional and the odd. You will find hundreds of vendors peddling their wares and locally grown, fresh produce. Have a bite to eat at one of the many food booths and take home a one of a kind hand crafted item. Open Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., 2495 State Rd. 207, St. Augustine, 904-824-4210.
HISTORY HUNTERS The Oldest Wooden School House is a throwback to another time. Built more than two centuries ago, you can almost hear the schoolmaster who lived above the small classroom with his family. The building is made of red cedar and cypress and connected with wooden pegs and handmade nails. Open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. every day & 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday, 14 St. George St., 888-653-7245, www.OldestWoodenSchoolHouse.com Washington Oaks Gardens State Park has become known for its lush formal gardens, brimming with a kaleidoscope of floral color. The roses, azaleas and camellias are framed by towering oaks. A relative of our first president, George Washington, is rumored to have once owned this enormous estate. 6400 N. Oceanshore Blvd., Palm Coast, two miles south of Marineland. The Old City Gates and Wall is positioned on the north end of St. George Street. With its tough exterior composed of coquina and palmetto logs, the wall once protected the City from the British and invasive pirates. Three hundred years ago, the wall stretched from the fort to the river. Once upon a time, it was the only entrance to the city.
Insider’s Guide to Fun in the Sun BACK TO NATURE Anastasia State Park with its exotic sounding name provides dozens of reasons to visit. Stroll the four miles of white, sandy beach, hike the trails, fish along the shore, or fire up the grill and have a picnic! Paddleboards, canoes and kayaks can be rented at the park and there’s a full facility campground for those seeking a longer visit. $8 per car, 8:00 a.m. - sundown daily, 1340A State Rd. A1A, 904-461-2033. Princess Place Preserve State Park blankets 1,500 acres and is the place to be if you love the great outdoors. Hiking, fishing and horseback riding are just a few of the pastimes. Don’t forget to stop by the cottage built in 1886 by Henry Cutting. It is Flagler County’s oldest building. Free admission, 2500 Princess Place Rd., Palm Coast, 386-313-4020. The Vilano Beach Fishing Pier will tempt you to try fishing even if you’ve never done so previously. From the moment you walk under the two frolicking dolphin stretched high above the pier, you know your decision to visit was a good one. If you aren’t fishing, look for dolphin, manatee and other wildlife that frequent the pier or watch the boats pass by. Free admission, 260 Vilano Rd., 904-209-0333.
CURIOSITY SEEKERS The Old Senator is not a product of Washington, DC, but rather it is the oldest live oak tree in St. Augustine. The 600 year oak is fairly easy to spot: It sits in the center of the Howard Johnson’s parking lot! 137 San Marco Ave. The Bridge of Lions is an imposing structure that spans the Intracoastal and links St. Augustine with Anastasia Island. What is now an historic landmark was built in 1927. The moveable bascule-style bridge stretches high into the sky allowing boat traffic to pass. This is the photo you don’t want to leave without taking! The bridge can be seen from just about anywhere in the downtown area.
ROMANCE Take a moonlight stroll around Castillo de San Marcos. Look for impressions of cannon shot in the coquina blocks and follow the path along the bay to the Plaza. While The Lightner Museum displays relics from the gilded age, there’s a reason to visit their cozy manicured gardens in the evening. Cuddle on one of the benches lining the covered walkway and take in the surroundings. Ah, love! 75 King St., 904-824-2874. Can the St. Augustine Love Tree hold the key to undying love? People who visit the oak tree wrapped around a sable palm seem to think so. In the ‘she loves me; she loves me not’ world of romance, the story goes that a couple sharing a kiss under the tree will have a passion that will last forever. That’s based on a legend that says if the trees were to be separated, both would die. Cordova St.

Unparalleled
INING
Whether it’s a café or waterfront restaurant; no matter if you have a romantic, candlelit dinner or a sumptuous burger at a tiki bar with friends, your dining experience in St. Augustine will be truly memorable. Culinary options abound and are as varied as the city itself. Here, it’s all about diversity. Ethnic favorites range from Thai to Tapas. The scope of seafood selections span from old favorites like shrimp prepared in a variety of ways to the more exotic alligator bites, accompanied with appropriate dipping sauce of course. Those seeking comfort food will find a seemingly endless supply of typical American fare. If you get the urge for just about any type of food, you can find it in the Ancient City. And if you can’t find it here, it is a dish that probably hasn’t yet been created.
22
The dress code includes the casual to the elegant and everything in between, with the majority of dining establishments being suitable for more informal ‘come as you are’ attire. Choose that option when in St. Augustine and you only have to concern yourself with deciding what to eat and where to go. Diverse surroundings run the gamut from quaint sidewalk cafes to more sophisticated waterfront hotspots. Have your favorite libation and watch the sunset from a riverfront setting, then greet the morning at an oceanfront restaurant and feast on eggs benedict and marvel at the sunrise as the day begins anew. Whether you decide to dine indoors or out, to be casual or formal, or to grab a burger or filet mignon prepared to perfection, the choice is yours!

Key Lime Pie is a creamy, sweet dessert
with a fresh taste that tingles on your tongue. It originated back in the 19th century in Key West. Made with the juice of tart, thin skinned, yellow Key Limes and sweetened condensed milk, it has many variations, including meringue topping. The availability of authentic Key Lime juice has allowed this regional dessert to spread far beyond Florida. ~Georgia Brown
