ST. AUGUSTINE • PONTE VEDRA & BEACHES Onn Florida lorida’ss Historic istoric Coast oast

The oldest continuous settlement in the US and a romantic getaway for those who love stories from the past. From the Bridge of Lions on the bay, you are suspended between views of the Old City’s towers and the level blue expanse of the Matanzas River. From this vantage you have a choice between the history of the town and escapes to Atlantic beaches and beautiful natural places. Plenty of European influences have their admirers here, but it’s a modern city too, with a unique variety of businesses, galleries, nightclubs and award-winning restaurants.

Throughout this guide look for the NEW symbol for things you may not have heard about. Keep it handy for the valuable coupons offered by businesses and restaurants. If you are looking for things to do that won’t break your wallet, check out our Extras pages. There’s a lot to see, so when you need to know where things are, our maps will help you find them. A wealth of

CTIVITIES for you to TRY

St. Augustine’s intriguing buildings reveal two worlds, the rigorous hardships of colonial life and the grandeur of the railroad era. Just beyond the spires and towers are 42 miles of sparkling beaches and year round activities in beautiful natural areas. Thousands of stories have been gleaned from the artifacts left by the Native American Indians and settlers from Spain, England and America. There’s a lot to absorb, from the thunder of weapons firing to interpreters who bring history to life. The city will soon celebrate events leading up to the 450th Anniversary of its founding. On the grounds of the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park, numerous archeological digs have proven it’s the site where Pedro Menendez de Aviles brought 800 Spanish settlers and established a colony near a Timucuan village in 1565. Notably, that’s 42 years before Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock! The Pirate & Treasure Museum has added a NEW artifact, Kidd’s Chest, a 17th century wooden chest with a mysterious false bottom, attributed to the infamous Captain Kidd. Take a tour

6

of the World Golf Hall of Fame for an outstanding collection of memorabilia and interactive fun for everyone. Climb to the top of the St. Augustine lighthouse or take a helicopter ride to see why surfers, paddle boarders and fresh and saltwater anglers come here. Relax on a sunset cruise around the harbor for an unforgettable perspective of the city, or explore a pristine nature park on an eco tour. End the day with a carriage ride, listening to the sound of hooves echo along curiously illuminated streets, letting the atmosphere transport you to an earlier time. Or opt for a tour with ghostly tales that enlighten or frighten—either way, sweet dreams!

Spanish Heritage

—It’s Authentic!

St. Augustine’s history was a push-and-pull between Spain, France and the US, yet the Spanish influence endured. Ponce de Leon’s landing in 1513 inspired the Bridge of Lions four centuries later. In Spanish, león means lion. Follow the lions’ gaze to the Plaza and the Cathedral Basilica completed in 1797. St. Augustine is the only urban center in the US whose architecture and street plan mirror its Spanish origins. Citrus plantings were nurtured by Spanish settlers and became the basis of Florida’s citrus industry, which moved south after freezes in 1894-95. When it comes to cuisine, look for traditional dishes seasoned with sweet-hot Datil peppers. The seeds were brought here by Minorcan families who worked on early plantations. From Valencia came paella, a luscious dish combining saffron, rice, vegetables and tender bits of meat or shellfish. Pair it with sangria—a blend of red wine, brandy, fruit and citrus slices—for a classic Spanish meal. For dessert order flan, a divine egg custard that tastes like the nectar of angels.

Whale Watching January through March

1

If you see people gathered on the dune crossovers with binoculars, they are probably watching whales. The calving grounds for endangered North Atlantic Right Whales are off our coast, and if you’re lucky, you may see mothers with calves some distance offshore. Volunteer whale spotters help scientists by reporting whale sightings as they migrate from their feeding grounds in the northeastern US to the shallow waters off NE Florida. Scientists believe there are fewer than 500 in the population. Spotters look for a V-shaped blow. High places like dune crossovers and tall buildings give the best views. If you want to learn more, short lectures by author/whale watcher Frank Gromling are offered at Gamble Rogers State Park. Call 386-517-2086 for a schedule. If you spot a whale call 888-979-4253. Sightings are recorded by the Marine Resources Council and sent to a national database. The Council verifies sightings and notifies ships in the area to keep a lookout for whales. Most injuries to whales occur from collisions with ships. The Marineland Right Whale Project (aswh.org) trains volunteers to assist scientists in sightings, however, observers are required by US law to keep a distance of 500 yards. The whale pictured here was born nearby and returned to have her calf in the same area.

OUT AND ABOUT Aviles Street in the oldest part of the city is a narrow, brick-paved byway lined with quaint shops, historic buildings and galleries. It is a vibrant place to relax at a sidewalk table, sip coffee, wine or beer and listen to live jazz. You can walk down Aviles, turn left and come back up Charlotte Street and never be bored. The Old Spanish Trail Zero Mile Marker was dedicated in 1928 at the completion of the transcontinental auto trail connecting the Spanish colonial towns of St. Augustine on the Atlantic to San Diego on the Pacific. The round coquina marker is near the St. Augustine Welcome Center. 904-825-1000. St. John’s Marketplace is an authentic weekend market that attracts hundreds of dealers, fresh produce and much more. Eat your way through food booths and uncover artisan-made finds. 904-824-4210.

NATURE CALLING Washington Oaks Gardens lies between an Atlantic beach with coquina rocks and the Matanzas River. Formal gardens of azaleas, roses and camellias bloom gloriously among old oaks. 2 miles south of Marineland on A1A. 386-446-6780. Anastasia State Park The dune trail, 4 miles of pristine beach and ranger-led eco tours are well worth the visit. Have lunch at the beach grill, and for fun and fitness, rent a bike to ride the beach and quiet roads. $8 per car. 904-461-2033. Bird Island Park: A native landscape surrounds a rookery that attracts local and migrating birds. Walkers enjoy a boardwalk around the pond and trails with pavilions. Free. Next to the Ponte Vedra Beach Public Library. 904-469-PARK. Vilano Beach Fishing Pier There’s no fee to fish or stroll on this pier, which is next to a full service marina. Many beachgoers sift through the golden coquina sand to hunt sharks' teeth. 904-209-0333.

ROMANCE ON A DIME A Moonlight stroll around Castillo de San Marcos: Look for impressions of cannon shot in the coquina blocks and follow the path along the bay to the Plaza. Bridge of Lions: At sunset this is the most romantic view of the Old City. A marble lion is the perfect background for a photo keepsake. The historic 1927 landmark connects the city to Anastasia Island. St. Augustine’s Love Tree is an oak entwined around a sable palm. The legend says if separated, both will die, but if you kiss under the trees, everlasting romance is yours. It must work because couples come back on their anniversary to kiss again! It’s on Cordova Street, south of the St. Augustine Welcome Center.

FOR CURIOSITY’S SAKE Old Senator - Drive into the courtyard of the Howard Johnson Express Inn to see this live oak tree—it’s approximately 500 years old! 137 San Marco Avenue. St Augustine Florida National Cemetery: Soldiers have been buried in this peaceful cemetery since 1828. The unique Dade monuments of coquina stone honor veterans of the 1835-1842 Indian Wars to remove the Seminoles from the territory. 104 Marine Street. Florida Agricultural Museum offers trail rides on Cracker horses and an 1890s homestead, dairy barn and store. A tractor-pulled wagon ride will get you around to see everything. Open Wednesday-Sunday. 7900 Old Kings Road and US 1. Family rates. 386-446-7630.

HISTORY SEEKERS 1798 Ximenez-Fatio House: This well preserved coquina block house filled with authentic objects was once a boarding house. 20 Aviles Street South of the Plaza. Open Tuesday-Saturday, Adults $7, Students $5, Families $15. 904-829-3575. Fort Matanzas National Monument: Take the free ferry to the 18th-century fort that protected the southern approach to the city and watch weapons firings. The boardwalk eco-trail shaded by a canopy of oaks is the quiet side of this outpost. 14 miles south of St. Augustine on Scenic Highway A1A. 904-471-0116.

INING

When it’s time to decide where to dine, the setting is as important as what you eat. In St. Augustine the dining options are endless, and whether you choose a restaurant where candlelight shadowdances on brick walls or a deck where sunlight bounces off the water, delicious food is close at hand. For a romantic evening, dine in a Victorian home or a ballroom with chandeliers that evoke the gilded tastes of Henry Flagler. If you’ve spent the morning beachcombing, we have casual pubs where you can kick back and relax with a juicy burger or a grilled fish sandwich served in a basket with fries. St. Augustine’s accomplished chefs are famous for their freestyle imagination and in-house sauces. Cuisines of many cultures have been brought to our shores and our taste buds have been rewarded ever since. When you want something that’s a little different, you have a wide choice of authentic Spanish, Minorcan, Cajun or

20

Italian fare. The Tasting Room, noted for its contemporary Spanish cuisine and extensive wine list, has received a NEW commendation, the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2011 for Most Notable Wine List. Fresh Florida seafood is always a good choice, beginning with our favorite appetizers, crisp, lightly battered shrimp or steamed mussels. A fish entrée, topped with the chef ’s special sauce and served with farm-to-table produce, is as healthy as it is delicious. After sightseeing, take time to relax over coffee or hot chocolate at a sidewalk table. Add a fresh baked cinnamon roll or a cupcake—it’s a small indulgence while you’re on vacation. After dark the local crowd drifts downtown for dinner, live music and dancing. Go ahead, join the strollers, kick up your heels and savor the romance of the city as it sparkles at night!

WINE & FOOD PAIRING Part of the fun in wine tasting is deciding what you f ind is delicious. Everyone has a dif ferent set of taste buds, so drink the wines you like with the food you like. Instead of red with meat, white with f ish, think about balancing f lavors. For example, pair delicately f lavored foods with light-bodied wines. A lightly f lavored f ish calls for a crisp, light white wine. Deeper f lavored salmon calls for a f lavorful, buttery white wine. Bold, spicy foods require a full-bodied wine that’s slightly sweet and full of f lavor. Seasoned dishes like pasta and savory meats are balanced with a rich, robust red wine.

TASTING TIPS Hold the glass by the stem, so that the heat of your hand doesn’t warm the wine. Examine its color and swirl it to mix in oxygen and release the wine’s aromas. Inhale the f lavor with a deep breath. Sniff above the glass f irst and then put your nose right into the glass. Take a sip and let it roll over your tongue. What do your senses tell you?

S HOPPING? Come for the

You’ve come to the

Right Place.

Whether your shopping excursion is just for the pleasure of finding an unexpected purchase, or a serious endeavor to find a special gift, the Old City will make you feel like a time traveler. St. Augustine is known for quaint specialty shops, vintage treasures, French and English antiques and art galleries, but it’s also a 21st century city with a selection of contemporary jewelry, clothing and furnishings for your home. Within a short distance of the central Plaza, galleries display original paintings, prints, sculpture and photography. Expect to see unique selections of works by established and emerging artists every time you open a door. If you need some refreshment while you shop, there are sidewalk cafes and restaurants on nearly every street.

On Aviles Street, the oldest thoroughfare in the city, you can spend hours strolling in and out of galleries, boutiques and historic sites. When you need a break, relax at the wine bar or have a homemade dessert at a sidewalk café. Toward the beach along A1A there are stores with the latest swimwear and outdoor sports equipment, and if you like shopping familiar brands at bargain prices, the outlet malls are just a short drive away. One of the best rewards of shopping is finding a unique gift or a perfect memento of your trip. And if you find something extraordinary, many of our shops will ship it home for you.

St. George Street is blissfully free of vehicle traffic and has shops in old buildings with quaint second stories that extend out over the street. The city’s oldest locally owned clothing store, the H.W. Davis Co., founded in 1894, offers select ladies’ and men's sportswear with labels you will recognize. Nearby in the Casa Del Hidalgo courtyard at Hypolita Street, St. Augustine Photographic Art Gallery can now reproduce your photos on NEW ceramic tiles as well as on large format canvas print.
