ST. AUGUSTINE PONTE VEDRA & BEACHES

The oldest continuous settlement in the US and a romantic getaway for those who love stories from the past Many special events are planned during the coming months as we approach the 450th Anniversary of St. Augustine’s founding in 1565 by a group of 800 Spanish soldiers and brave settlers led by Pedro Menendez de Avilés. Older than Jamestown or Plymouth Rock, our buildings bring history to life, so let your curiosity be your guide as you explore and listen to the interpreters dressed in period clothing and military uniforms. It’s the easiest way to learn history that we know! This is our favorite time of year. It’s when we find time to kick back and get out on the water. Whether you paddle a kayak in

a nature preserve or take a boat tour on the Intracoastal, you’ll see the area from a fresh vantage point. Keep the SEE Insider’s Guide close at hand for its maps and valuable coupons. Check out the EXTRAS on pages 14 and 15 for some activities we’ve selected that are free or under $10. The St. Augustine area is a melting pot of Spanish and English colonists, Native Americans, pirates and pioneers. Once you fall under its spell, we know you’ll want to come back again.

A wealth of

CTIVITIES for you to TRY

The fascination of St. Augustine starts with a thousand stories of how residents survived the tumultuous years of pirate raids and clashes over colonial rights. Inquisitive visitors will enjoy the wooden pioneer structures and watching artisans working with old tools. Museums bursting with artifacts from Timucuan, Spanish, British and American cultures can make you feel like a time traveler. The Villa Zorayda Museum, a masterpiece of Moorish Spanish revival architecture, has a NEW audio guide in three languages for its collection of fine antiques and Oriental rugs. Inspired by the Alhambra Palace, Franklin Smith built it as a winter home in 1883. Beyond the city, you’ll find 42 miles of stunning, golden sand beaches and beautiful nature preserves. Climb to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse for a panoramic view of the Castillo de San Marcos, the Matanzas River and the harbor where battles and blockades took place. If you want to go fishing, our marinas will supply everything you’ll need, including a guide. Even a few hours spent fishing from a pier usually yields Kingfish and Cobia—plus it’s a great way to meet the locals.

6

St. Augustine Eco Tours offers a NEW 2-hour sailing excursion for six on the Sirenia catamaran. Take part in the sailing experience or catch some rays as you watch for wildlife while the Captain works the lines. If you drive 18 miles south to Marineland Dolphin Adventure, now part of the Georgia Aquarium, the hands-on experience with these intelligent mammals will amaze you. Plus the NEW gift shop is now open and stocked with irresistible items. At the end of the day, relax with a romantic carriage ride, listen to the echo of hooves on brick-paved streets and you’re very likely to have sweet dreams.

Help Us Protect the Dunes Why do we protect our dunes? Well, it’s obvious that sea oats, those tall fronds that wave in the slightest breeze, help prevent erosion when there is a severe storm. They have deep roots that have a stabilizing effect on the drifting mounds of soft sand that gradually slope from the uplands to the high tide line. That’s why we use wooden walkways to get to the beach. Dunes also protect the Endangered Anastasia Island Beach Mice, the only mammal native to the dunes. Buff colored fur with white markings on the face and nose provide good camouflage for living among the sea oats and panic grass. Endangered Anastasia Island Beach Mouse It make burrows for storing food in the dunes, but you can Photo credit: Florida Park Service sometimes see tiny footprints around creeper vines.

South of the Visitor’s Center on Cordova Street.

TURTLE NESTING SEASON

begins May 1st through October 31st

The yellow markers and netting mean a sea turtle has deposited her eggs in the sand! All sea turtles are endangered, but Loggerheads are most commonly seen on our beaches. Hatchlings— only about 2 inches long—wait until the sand cools at night before scrambling to the water where they spend several years in floating beds of seaweed. Green turtles and huge Leatherbacks also nest on Florida shores. Turtles don’t reach maturity for 15 to 50 years. Scientists believe

that only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 babies will survive to adulthood. Don’t disturb a turtle that is crawling on the beach or laying eggs. Watch from a distance of at least 30 feet. Avoid shining lights on the beach at night as this may frighten nesting females and confuse the hatchlings’ ability to find the sea. For more information, call St. Johns Habitat Conservation at 904-209-3740. In a wildlife emergency, call St. Johns Sheriff Dispatch at 904-824-8304.

Unparalleled

INING

Deciding where to eat on vacation is an important decision. It often requires a lengthy discussion because there are so many options! Delicious meals taste even better with a view of sunlight bouncing off the water or in a courtyard echoing the soft sounds of a fountain. Waves of settlers brought their favorite dishes from their homelands to St. Augustine and American taste buds have blended the best of these influences to the delight of our visitors. From Valencia came paella, a delectable rice dish with vegetables and bits of meat and shellfish plucked from local waters. The sweet-hot Datil pepper arrived in 1777 with Menorcan plantation workers from the Mediterranean who used it to flavor their chowders and stews. St. Augustine’s chefs are renowned for their freestyle seasonings and imaginative dishes. When in doubt, a fresh Atlantic seafood entrée topped with a delicately flavored sauce is always a delicious and healthy choice. All the standbys, from crisp coconut shrimp to southern barbeque, are

22

available plus a wide choice of Italian, Asian and Cajun fare. If you’re looking for great Mexican inspired cuisine visit Cabo Taco Mexicali Grill for their original takes on tacos and burritos. Their NEW seafood creation, seared Yellowfin Ahi Tuna Tacos, is the latest addition to their menu. The Kingfish Grill on the Water, known for fresh-caught fish, has another winner in their NEW entrée, Horseradish Encrusted Mahi, which is topped with a roasted garlic and herb butter that everyone loves. While sightseeing in the historic district, the scent of fresh baked cinnamon buns draws people to The Bunnery Bakery & Café for breakfast and lunch. If you’re in the mood to cool off with an icy drink, select one of their NEW all-fruit smoothies. Whether you are at the beach or in a cozy bistro where candlelight shadow dances on the walls, you can enjoy extraordinary cuisine here anytime.

This refreshing wine punch is popular with Spanish dishes. It’s usually made with Spanish red wine and sliced oranges and lemons, but you can add peaches, cherries, kiwi or strawberries. Sparkling water or lemon-lime soda gives it fizz. A touch of Spanish brandy or other liqueur gives it a little punch. Serve it over ice in a chilled glass. It’s easy to make at home—you can even use white wine!

A trip to the St. Augustine Outlets at I-95 offers a rare treat, the only Gucci outlet in the Southeast. You’re sure to land a famous label with a bargain price tag at more than 75 brand name stores and don’t miss the NEW expanded children’s department at Saks Fifth Avenue’s OFF 5th.

Nearly everywhere you stroll you’ll also find 21st century contemporary clothing and galleries with a wide range of original art, sculpture and photography. Restore your energy after all that walking and fuel up with a stop at a café—there’s always one nearby. Romance Thrives

in the Oldest City in America

Capturing the romance that has thrived in St. Augustine for nearly 450 years is as easy as walking together around the beautifully illuminated Spanish fort in the moonlight. Then follow the old walkway along the seawall, a path that follows in the footprints of many couples who found love and romance in St. Augustine.

Get to know ancient Aviles Street at night when shops are brightly lit and bistros are serving at sidewalk tables. Browse through bins for an art print and enjoy a cozy, late night supper.
