Spanish Heritage

—It’s Authentic!

St. Augustine’s history was a push-and-pull between Spain, France and the U.S., yet the Spanish influence endured. Ponce de Leon’s landing in 1513 inspired the Bridge of Lions four centuries later. In Spanish, león means lion. Follow the lions’ gaze to the Plaza and the Cathedral Basilica completed in 1797. St. Augustine is the only urban center in the U.S. whose architecture and street plan mirror its Spanish origins. Citrus plantings were nurtured by Spanish settlers and became the basis of Florida’s citrus industry, which moved south after freezes in 1894-95. When it comes to cuisine, look for traditional dishes seasoned with sweet-hot Datil peppers. The seeds were brought here by Minorcan families who worked on early plantations. From Valencia came paella, a luscious dish combining saffron, rice, vegetables and tender bits of meat or shellfish. Pair it with sangria—a blend of red wine, brandy, fruit and citrus slices—for a classic Spanish meal. For dessert order flan, a divine egg custard that tastes like the nectar of angels.

s e v i r Th e c in the Oldest City in America Roman Capturing the romance that has thrived in St. Augustine for nearly 450 years is as easy as walking together around the beautifully illuminated Spanish fort in the moonlight. Then follow the old walkway along the seawall, a path that follows in the footprints of many couples who found love and romance in St. Augustine. Get to know ancient Aviles Street at night when shops are brightly lit and bistros are serving at sidewalk tables. Browse through bins for an art print and enjoy a cozy, late night supper.

Unparalleled

INING

Everything tastes better when you are on vacation and away from home. Strolling through the Old City, or playing in the sun, can build up an appetite. Not to worry, because dining out is another great part of being here. Whether it’s a café or waterfront restaurant, no matter if you have a romantic candlelit dinner or quick bite at a tiki bar with friends, your dining experience in St. Augustine will be truly memorable. For a city of its size, St. Augustine offers unusually delicious fare, a combination of available fresh ingredients and the freestyle imagination of accomplished chefs. The dress code includes the casual to the elegant and everything in between, with the majority of dining establishments offering more informal ‘come as you are’ attire.

Now with 3 locations, the Hyppo Gourmet Ice Pops features NEW flavors daily. I’m hooked on the Mexican Hot Chocolate pop. Amazing! Yesterday I tried the Elvis (Peanut Butter and Banana). Oh my! Across from the beach is the new Salt Life Food Shack, a NEW restaurant with a variety of fresh menu choices. You decide! Dine indoors or out, be casual or formal, or grab a burger or a local grilled fish platter prepared to perfection — the choices are yours! There is a NEW breakfast and lunch menu at The Bunnery Bakery and Café on St. George Street. Be sure to taste their famous Cinnamon Rolls. For dining cost savings, check out our ‘Old City Savings’ Coupon section on pages 34-44 within this guide. Save for more fun in your day with SEE.
