ACTIVITIES
getting the most out of your vacation
W
Whether you’re here to vacation with the family or just relax, there are many exciting adventures awaiting you on our golden beaches and beyond. For sweeping views of our beautiful coast, try parasailing, rent a boat or go paddle boarding on the Intracoastal. At the Pure Life Surf School learn to surf together the NEW way as a family, and build lasting memories. Eco adventure tours on air boats skim over the water to remote areas inhabited by eagles and alligators. If relaxing on a comfortable cruise boat is more your speed, the Manatee sails twice daily on the Intracoastal from Ponce Inlet to nature preserves. Or you could paddle our slow moving waterways among cypress trees and scores of birds. The tour of the Daytona International Speedway reveals inside stories of racing’s legends. If you crave more racing thrills, get behind the wheel at a go-kart track.

For curiosity’s sake spend an afternoon exploring a historic landmark or visit the Museum of Arts and Sciences to see a variety of marvels like the giant sloth, European furniture collections and Cuban art. Look through EXTRAS on pages 8 - 9 for more museums and historic places that won’t break your budget. Our favorite NEW day trips include the Kennedy Space Center located in a National Wildlife Refuge. NASA has just opened its doors for up-close tours of the rocket assembly building. Victory Casino Cruises sail from Cape Canaveral twice daily for offshore gaming and entertainment. If you drive 12 miles north to the Marineland Dolphin Adventure, interacting with these intelligent mammals will amaze you. Plus the new gift shop is open and stocked with irresistible items. However you choose to enjoy your vacation, great activities and intriguing attractions are just minutes away.

DINING a world of dining choices
D
Dining out can be some of the most relaxing things you do on a carefree vacation. With nearly every style of cuisine and many restaurants with stunning views of the water, you are sure to find several to please you in the Daytona Beach area. You’ve come to the right place for fresh Atlantic seafood. Start with an appetizer of coconut shrimp, gator tail or fried clams. Seafood is prepared many delicious ways here, from the classic grilled fish sandwich served with crisp fries to plump shrimp floating in a tantalizing sauce. If you enjoy something different like Cajun, Polynesian or Mexican, there are lots of restaurants that can satisfy your desire for mouth-watering ethnic cuisines. Savory barbeque sandwiches and grilled burgers are perfect when you’re on the go. At night you’ll find many different establishments offer live

music and dancing. Casual attire is all that’s needed at most restaurants, but if you are in the mood for a more formal environment, we have that too. For more dining ideas to suit your mood, look over our Dining Guide on pages 28. Be sure to check out the back pages for valuable coupons too. The Inlet Harbor Restaurant, Marina & Gift Shop has a NEW waterfront bar where you can catch the breeze as you sip a frosty Shark Attack drink for two from a souvenir “fish bowl” glass. At Caribbean Jack’s the NEW outdoor fire pit is open and the perfect spot to relax over 45-ounce Super Colossal Margaritas! Everybody gives into a little temptation on vacation. When you crave a decadent dessert, go ahead, give in. A slice of Key lime pie or chocolate cheesecake is a scrumptious way to end the day.

Shopping is a delightful part of every vacation, whether you are picking up new sunglasses for yourself or t-shirts for the family; expect to have fun every step of the way. For the surf and sand set, there’s a wide range of swimsuits and outdoor sports gear, everything from skim boards and kayaks to inflatable beach toys. You’ll love opening doors at The Ocean Walk Shoppes, stepping into the cool air and browsing through racks of sportswear, wide brimmed hats and souvenirs to take home. Then take in a movie or eat at one of the restaurants. This is a place where shopping is fun! Once you have that golden tan, you’ll need some new apparel to show it off. Follow your instincts as you browse through multi-hued selections of clothing. Sunny skies call for softly comfortable clothing that moves with you. Add some

shell jewelry and glitzy sandals and you’re ready for an evening out! The Sand Box is one of our best loved shopping emporiums. Take a look at the season’s NEW sportswear in beautiful teal and purple. As usual many things are on sale too. Fine stores and boutiques pop up in neighborhoods all over the area. Visit downtown districts lined with unique shops and explore the historic surroundings. You’ll often find galleries with original art and photography, and there’s usually a café nearby where you can pull up a chair, relax and have lunch. It’s just a short drive to the Volusia Mall or The Pavilion at Port Orange where you’ll find all your favorite stores, plus some NEW Florida fashions to add to your wardrobe. Don’t forget to visit the consignment stores and the Farmers Market. From the finest designer labels to the biggest bargains, this is a shopper’s paradise!

Model and Bikini provided by Maui Nix Surf Shop
A Brief Bikini History When the Bikini was introduced by a Frenchman in 1946, it was like a bombshell had dropped. No model would wear it. Undaunted, he named it after the nuclear bomb site at the Bikini Atoll. Beauty pageants worldwide banned it in1951. The starlet Brigitte Bardot was widely credited with popularizing it around the globe. Its appearance in a James Bond movie—the Swiss actress Ursula Andress wore it in Dr. No—made movie history in 1962. By the mid sixties, Raquel Welch, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield had all worn it. In 1964 Sports Illustrated published its first swimsuit issue and the rest is history. Today it is the most popular swimsuit design in the world.
