Mom V/S Mom!! No sooner was Suraj Pancholi arrested by the Mumbai Police Juhu under IPC section 306, on Monday evening. Suraj was arrested for abetting actor Jiah Khan's suicide. Well! Left with no choice we decided to catch up with Rabiya Khan [Jiah’s mother] in order to get her reactions to Suraj’s arrest under the non bail- able offence-IPC/section 306-

Rabiya- I think she was a misfit on this “Planet” Earth!! Why did God have to shower this pressure onto my baby? Ever since a child of just five years of age she started acting. At the age of 9 she acted for some cause for the-UNICIEF .She turned as a child bride also acted for Child abuse cause for Americans. She always acted for some cause or the other. She cherished to be an actor always. However, she also nurtured other hobbies like writing poems, stories etc. She was highly poetic at heart. She was also, immensely emotional girl. That’s how I know my baby. Suraj being arrested-I think that Justice is being done to my daughter. She suffered a lot at the hands of Suraj. She did not show me her anguish and pain that she suffered. I wish she had shown me her heart openly. She was beaten often, which I come to know after reading her letters. Had she disclosed this fact, I would have not left my child alone. I would have followed her everywhere like a police woman.” On the other hand Zarina Wahab mother to Suraj Pancholi too kept supporting her son through the television channels wherein she stated,” Suraj was an emotional boy and a kid indeed .Why on earth Jiah had to chose a boy much younger to her. Also Suraj always supported Jiah emotionally. I am sad about the loss of Jiah; she should have not taken this drastic step!!

Well! One whole week long sight on the channels was MOM V/S MOM!! Adding spice to the incident PRO’S were engaged to make the moms blabber on the channels and news papers. Who is to be blamed? The boy or the girl in relationship? While one has left for her heavenly abode the other is suffering on earth…However today Suraj gets bail and his parents may be surely expecting a bright future ahead for their son. But the million Dollar question is what if these kids would have followed the phrase, “Precaution is better than Cure” Everyone in life should know their limits to an uncalled relationship. Both the lives would have been the blessed ones on this wonderful earth!!
Signing off with lots of luv,
blisher

Emraan’s fantasy of robbing a bank Not many know Emraan Hashmi’s reel life fantasy of running helter skelter to find the money in “Ghanchakkar ‘indeed has been a real life fantasy too. Disclosing his thought process during his adolescent age Emraan gives away a secret of his heart, “Like most of the unconventional thinking of kids I too had always cherished to make a lot of money during my youth hood days. I always tried to brood over different ideas that cropped up in my notorious minds of making hoards of money. “Frankly speaking one fine night as a kid I planned a bank robbery. I had also plans to but cars of different makes costing exorbitant amount. Leave apart cars…. My minds went ahead with keeping uniquely designed “Aircrafts and ships for my personal use. Who would not love to have millions and trillions of money….but this fantasy has disappeared from my minds once I grew up .As I knew everything has to be earned through hard means” he smiles wickedly….and walks away!! “The awards and affection that I get today is more than all I want
Four Pillars of Indian Music Every month GM does an article for the yesteryear stars but this time I thought of making something different. I thought of getting to the four pillars of Indian Music as talking about them separately is not possible. They four were the best of buddies and respected each other immensely. Yes you got me right. I am talking about Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh and Manna Dey. I know whatever I write would be a drop in the ocean for the four pillars but still I would try to do a small shraddhanjali to them and talk about them in the little most capacity that I have.
Manna Dey Manna Dey was born to very humble parents, Purna Chandra and Mahamaya Dey. Along with his parents his youngest paternal uncle K.C. Dey, who was referred to as Sangeetacharya, also left an indelible impression on the minds of young Manna. He was inspired and influenced a lot by his uncle. During his college days he sang to entertain his classmates and that was when his interest in music increased manifold and he began taking singing lessons from his uncle, Krishna Chandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan. He used to participate and win many awards for his college in stage performances.
B
orn as Prabodh Chandra Dey on the 1st of May 1919, he was better famous by his nickname, Manna Dey. He was one of the four pillars and provided the necessary classical depth needed to the Indian film music. He has sung in Hindi, Bengali, Gujrati, Marathi, Malyalam, Kannada and Assamese. He rendered his voice to film music as well as personal albums right from the 1950’s to 1970’s. He is rated as the best classical singer among all others in the Hindi film fraternity. He although has sung all types of songs from pop to folk. He has recorded more than 3500 songs in the course of his long career. He has been awarded with many laurels from India and abroad. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005. His most coveted award is the Dadasaheb Phalke Award which was conferred to him in 2007.
It was in the year 1942 that he accompanied his uncle to Bombay and started working as an assistant under him. Later he moved onto assist Sachin Dev Burman and other notable music directors and after some success with them he went solo and started taking work independently. All the while he kept training himself in Hindustani classical music under Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan. Independently Dey started his career in playback singing with the movie Tamanna way back in the year 1943. The music was by his uncle and he sang a duet with Suraiya. The song became a rage among the masses of that time. His first solo song, Upar gagan Vishal, was scored by SD Burman for the 1950 movie, Mashal. Manna sang for the Bengali and Marathi movie, Amar Bhupali. This established him as a leading playback singer. Manna Dey recorded many famous duet songs with contemporary artists like Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and Mohammad Rafi. His duet song ‘Yeh Dosti’ with Kishore Kumar for the movie Sholay is the best song for friendship ever made. He has recorded about 58 duets with Mohammed Rafi, about 113 duets with Lata Mangeshkar and more than 100 duets with Asha Bhosle. He was very famous in the Bengali film circuit and made very good friends with Hemanta Mukherjee, the famous Bengali singer, composer and lyricist. He has recorded numerous Rabindra Sangeet songs and performed them with aplomb. He was awarded with the Filmfare lifetime achievement award in 2011. He is the lone member of the four pillars who is still alive and going strong as he keeps performing in India and abroad time and again. I wish him all the good health and long life. His life can not described in a word except as he says himself says, “My best is yet to come.”
Mohammed Rafi Rafi learnt classical music from Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwanlal Matto and Firoze Nizami. When he was 13 he gave his first public performance in a show where K.L.Saigal was the main artist. In 1941, Rafi under the music direction of Shyam Sundar made his debut as a playback singer in a duet with Zeenat Begum in a Punjabi film. He was invited in the same year to the All India Radio Lahore station to sing and this set up the ball rolling for the legend in the making. In Mumbai, 1944, Rafi along with his future brother-in-law rented a ten by ten feet room at Bhendi Bazaar area. He was introduced to film producers like Abdur Rashid Kardar, Mehboob Khan and actor-director Nazeer by the famous poet Tanvir Naqvi. He was then offered a duet with GM Durrani. Rafi also portrayed brief characters in movies like Laila-Majnu and Jugnu. After the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, he along with Husanlal Bhagatram and Rajendra Krishan created the song, ‘Suno suno ae duniyawalon, Bapuji ki amar kahani’ almost overnight. He was even invited by the then PM to sing at his residence the same song. Rafi received a silver medal in 1948 from the PM for this.
Born on the 24th of December, 1924, Mohammad Rafi, was the most prominent member of the four pillars. He was the one singer who provided the basic sad tones to the song alongside the happy zappy numbers. He was awarded the National Film Award and also 6 Filmfare Awards. He was also honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India. Rafi sang a cumulative of 4,516 songs in a career span of almost 35 years. He sang 112 non-Hindi film songs and 328 private songs from 1945 to 1980. He was one singer who could sing for every mood and variety. His songs ranged from classical numbers to qawwalis to ghazals to bhajans. He had the unique ability to mould his voice according to the screen presence of the actor portraying the song. He is best known for his romantic and duet songs. He is famous all over for his Hindi-Urdu songs, over which he had a strong command. Konkani, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu, Maghi, Maithili and Assamese are some of the other languages in which he has sang. He even recorded some songs in foreign languages like English, Persian, Spanish and Dutch. Rafi was the second youngest of six sons.
Rafi was highly influenced by K.L. Saigal, Talat Mahmood and GM Durrani on whose style he based his singing in the initial days. He sung with his idol for some songs as well. Following the partition Rafi decided to stay back in India and had his family flown to Mumbai. Rafi married twice. His first marriage was to the cousin of his second wife. The first marriage ended as the in-laws and his wife migrated to Lahore after the partition. Rafi had one son from his first marriage and three sons and three daughters from his second marriage. He was a very family man and scarcely attended film parties and did not smoke or drink. He was religious at heart and was considered by his peers as a very humble man. He used to practice riyaz(musical practice) from morning 3 to 7 everyday without fail. He only indulged at times in playing carom, badminton and also loved flying kites. On 31st July, 1980 Rafi passed away at 10:50 pm following a massive heart attack. His last song was recorded with the musical duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal just a few hours before his death. Rafi had one of the biggest funeral processions Mumbai had ever seen and it witnessed over 10,000 people attending. Rafi was buried at the Juhu muslim cemetery and he stayed there till 2010 when the tombs were demolished to make space for new burials. His fans arrive twice every year to mark his birth and death anniversary at this spot and post 2010 they have started using the nearest coconut tree to ark his grave. He left a larger than life image in the hearts of his fans and left a huge void in the music industry, something that can never be refilled.
Mukesh
getting to sing for Dilip Kumar and his contemporary Mohammed Rafi was getting the songs of Raj Kapoor but this did not last very long as Dilip Kumar started preferring Mohammed Rafi and Raj Kapoor started preferring Mukesh and thus they interchanged. Mukesh tried his hand at acting but his movies did not do that good business and on top even the songs of those movies were not very hit. So Mukesh took a conscious decision to stay focused on the more important delicacy that he had, singing. His friendship with Raj Kapoor had no bars. Raj Kapoor’s most ambitious project ‘Mera Naam Joker’ was so very much backed up by Mukesh that when the movie did not do well he along with Raj Kapoor was heart broken and he stopped singing for Raj Kapoor movies after that. It’s a very common fact that Kishore Kumar was the main voice of Rajesh Khanna as he always wanted him to sing his songs but it is not known to many people that Rajesh Khanna specifically asked for the songs of ‘Anand’ to be sung by Mukesh. He said that the voice of a person who is about to die can be only given by Mukesh and none other.
Born Mukesh Chand Mathur on July 22nd 1923 he was more popularly known as Mukesh and was one of the most famous singers of his times. He was one of the four pillars and put an indelible impression to the art of music in the Indian film fraternity. He won the National Film Award for Best Male playback singer way back in the year 1973. He was more popularly referred to as the voice of the legendary Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor said that Mukesh’s voice matched his voice perfectly and thus scarcely he chose any other singer to sing for him. Mukesh was born in Ludhiana and was sixth in a family of ten children. The teacher who used to come to teach his sister found an ardent disciple in the adjoining room in Mukesh. He dropped out of school after 10th and then worked for the department of Public Works for sometime. It was when he was working in Delhi that he started honing his singing skills and started cherishing a dream of becoming a singer. Mukesh was first noticed by Motilal, the actor and then he asked him to move to Mumbai and after getting an offer for a movie as an actor-singer he finally got his offer to sing in a solo song composed by Anil Biswas. Mukesh was a big fan of K.L.Saigal and even imitated him in his early days. K.L.Saigal once remarked after listening to Mukesh’s first song, “That’s strange, I don’t recall singing that song” Mukesh created his own style later with the help of music director Naushad as he helped him come out of the K.L.Saigal style. He was initially
Mukesh sang a total of around 1,200 songs. This is less than the others in the four pillars but the reason for this is that Mukesh emphasized more on quality rather than quantity. The reason for this was his failing health which was caused due to his worsening heart problem. Mukesh married Sarla Trivedi Raichand aka Bachhiben in the year 1946. She was the daughter of a Gujrati Brahmin millionaire. With no proper house, an erratic income and a profession that was then considered in India as ‘Immoral’, the couple was forced to elope. Everyone predicted that they would be facing harsh days but they successfully overcame the tough days and celebrated 30th years of successful marriage before leaving for the US. They had five children among them. He is the father of the famous singer Nitin Mukesh and the grandfather of actor Neil Nitin Mukesh. Mukesh died on 27th August 1976 of a massive heart attack when he was in Detroit, USA. He had gone there to perform at a concert. His body was flown to India by Lata Mangeshkar and a grand funeral ceremony was held in the presence of several actors. Everyone starting from fans to actors to fellow singers paid a tribute to the legend that he was. When Raj Kapoor heard of his death he exclaimed, “I have lost my voice” which itself is a testimony of the huge association between the two. His releases kept on coming way after his death and these songs turned out to be as big a hit as they used to be when he was alive. His last song was featured on Shashi Kapoor for the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram. He will always remain in the hearts of people not just as the voice of Raj Kapoor but also as a wonderful human being and larger than life personality.
Kishore Kumar he was more interested in singing. His elder brother wanted him to become an actor just like him. It is said that music composer S.D.Burman is credited for spotting the talent in Kishore after he heard him aping K.L.Saigal’s voice. Burman asked him to develop his own style which he later did by including the ‘yodeling’ that he heard on the gramophone records of Tex Morton and Jimmy Rodgers bought by his brother Anoop. Burman recorded many duets with Kishore and Asha especially for Deva Anand movies. In the 60’s as an actor Kishore had built up a notoriety for coming late for the shoots or at times bunking them altogether. His films flopped frequently and he landed up in income tax troubles. His 1968 movie Padosan which starred Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu and Mehmood is still considered by many as one of the finest comedies ever made.
Born as Abhas Kumar Kanjilal Ganguli on the 4th of August 1929, he was more popularly known as Kishore Kumar. He was the most versatile of the four pillars. He was not just a singer but a very famous comedy actor, lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenwriter and scriptwriter. He was a person who sang in Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Assamese, Gujrati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malyalam and Oriya. He is the proud record holder of 8 Filmfare awards for the best male playback singer, a feat which no one has yet been able to surpass. On his name the Madhya Pradesh government gives an award for the contribution to Indian cinema. Kishore Kumar was born into a rich Bengali Brahim family at Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. He was the youngest of the four siblings. While he was still a child, Ashok Kumar had become a Bollywood actor. Then slowly Anoop Kumar followed. Staying with his brothers Kishore started taking keen interest in movies and music. He became a very big fan of K.L.Saigal, whom he considered as guru. After Ashok Kumar became a successful star at Bollywood, Abhas Kumar changed his name to Kishore Kumar and started his cinema career as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies where his brother worked. He was initially not getting any songs to sing as everyone used to shun him away as he had no formal training in music. His first film as an actor was Shikari in which Ashok Kumar played the lead role. Slowly slowly he started getting small assignments with the help of his brother but he was not that serious about his acting career as
Singing for S.D.Burman he had developed a great friendship with R.D.Burman aka Panchamda. It was during the shooting of Aradhana that S.D.Burman passed away and the rest of the songs had to be completed by his son Pancham. So he called in a favor from from his close buddy Kishore and the rest is history. It was after Aradhana that both Kishore and Rajesh Khanna became superstars. Rajesh Khanna grew up to be the first superstar of India and he always requested Kishore Kumar to be his voice. Hence forth he sang for every possible actor including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty and so on. He was now a household name. Kishore Kumar married four times and has two sons. Kishore Kumar was said to be very paranoid about the payments not being done on time. During recordings he would sing only if his secretary confirmed that the payment was done fully. In spite of this ‘No money No work’ principle, Kishore at times did sang for free for his friends. He even helped the family of a well known music director after the death of the music director. Many reporters even say that he was eccentric and very money oriented. He had put up a notice saying ‘Beware of Kishore’ at the front of his door. He himself proclaimed that he was a loner and preferred staying alone and talking to trees. He mentioned that he did not have any friends even. He passed away a loner on the very day of the birthday of Ashok Kumar in 13th October 1987. He was one person who firmly believed that a person’s personal life does not decide his professional life and thus he did what he was best at, Singing. He became the most popular singer in the 70’s and 80’s and when he became popular the others in the Four Pillars took the back seat as he was that good in his singing. If he was eccentric and all I can’t vouch for that but he was the best at what he did, entertain people with his music. His Music will always be in our ears and will always make us hum ‘mere sapno ki rani kab aayegi tu.’
