COVER STORY

Ajay Devgn: Comedy Not A Male Dominated Space

A

jay Devgn, who is ready with the fourth installment in the "Golmaal" franchise, says their movie is a clean comedy that gives equal importance to both male and female actors. "Comedy is not male dominated space, the fact is very few clean comedies are being made. In our film, there are four- five male heroes but the actresses also have equally good roles. “There are films in which there are vulgar or double meaning jokes and actresses are used as props and men do the comedy. But we don't believe in this," Ajay told PTI. The "Singham" actor says his attempt is to always make a family entertainer. "There are very few family entertainers being made today. I try to maintain and keep every film of mine as a family entertainer so that everyone can go and watch.” Apart from Ajay, "Golmaal Again" features Arshad Warsi, Kunal Kemmu, Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor. While Tabu and Parineeti Chopra are the new additions to the Rohit Shetty helmed film. Of all the "Golmaal" franchise, Ajay says he did not like the second part. "I am also not very fond of the second part. But then the third one was good. My favourite is the first and the fourth one.” Ajay says the team of "Golmaal" never expected that the franchise will be loved and accepted by the audience so much. "The films did well not only in theatres but even on television. All the characters became memorable... Then we had the second and the third part coming up but we never thought it would go so ahead. This time we are hoping the fifth part will be made.” The "Shivaay" star says the shooting experience for "Golmaal" franchise is always amazing. "Everybody feels sad when the shoot is over, I feel happy as I am done with it, done with my responsibility." The film will open in theatres on October 20.

'Golmaal Again' Director Rohit Shetty: Comedy Films Will Never Be Appreciated

C

ritics may not have been kind to "Golmaal Again" but director Rohit Shetty is happy that the movie, his costliest so far, is doing well at the box office. The film, which reportedly released in 3,500 screens, opened at over Rs 30 crore.

The 44-year-old filmmaker says, “'Golmaal...' has got the highest opening and minted the fastest Rs 100 crore of this year. After watching the film, we were sure enough it will work but to what extent we did not know. We did not think we would get such an overwhelming response. But we were sure that family audience will come to see the film. The five-day domestic business of the comedy stands at Rs 116.89 crore, since its release on October 20. Shetty says he is never demotivated by reviews as focuses on audiences' reaction. "This is my 10th film and it has been 27 years as a director. I know it (negative reviews) happens. (But) I don't read reviews. From the audiences' reaction and box office collections, you come to know how much the film has been loved. "Comedy films are often looked down upon and they will never be appreciated, so you can't get depressed about it and take it seriously," he says in an interview

with PTI. With the fourth "Golmaal" installment, Rohit experimented by clubbing humour with the element of horror. "I did not want it to be an allcomedy film. We did not want to make it as any other comedy film. It is the costliest film of mine. We had to take this brand a notch higher. Even with 'Chennai Express', we added dramatic scenes in the second half," he says. The film clashed with Aamir Khan's "Secret Superstar" and Rohit says since the Diwali slot is often seen as a face-off among big releases, it was obvious that the number of screens would be divided. "When two films release together you don't know what will work. Nobody can predict what is going to happen on a Friday. The opening numbers of 'Golmaal Again' are the highest for this year.

"But if there was no clash, the opening would have been bigger. I can say this from the reaction of the audience. But for me, Rs 30 crore is also a big number." Rohit adds the genre and aim of two movies were different. "If the space of both the films was same then it would have been a problem for both of us," he adds.

Alia Bhatt: I Want To Be Remembered For The Movies And Characters I Do. B

ollywood actor Alia Bhatt joined filmmaker and mentor Karan Johar for a session India Economic Summit in Delhi and spoke at length about her successful journey in the film industry and she handles the success. “I want to be remembered for the movies and characters I do. I give a lot of heart into my characters…I want to be that impact on everybody. I have no idea of how well i am doing, what am I doing and what will if I sit back and assess every step that i take, I am going to lose a lot. So, I just go with the flow,” Alia said. Asked about her response to the criticism and love that comes her way, being a celeb, Alia said, “Initially I was very vulnerable and I was also very hungry to prove (myself). But with experience and in the last two years, it just came a bit of realisation to me is that the only constant in life is change. So, today I may be getting lot of love, tomorrow I won’t, may be. Today may be I am getting lot of hate, tomorrow I won’t, may be.” Replying to a query on changing technologies, the actor described herself as “technology challenged” amongst those present. Karan, who moderated the discussion, said, “When we talk about my industry, the movies, I feel extremely unfortunate when we say that we are not really on an upward swing at the moment. Cinema and cricket used to be two forces of entertainment on our land, and now, we (cinema) are fighting so many obstacles internally with other verticals, like digital and television are constantly growing and we are still surviving and combating reduced footfalls in cinemas.”

INTERVIEW

Aditi Rao Hydari Doesn’t Believe In Playing Bollywood Games W

hen little Aditi watched Manisha Koirala dancing to Kehna hi kya in Bombay (1995), the image of the actor in a white lehenga with middle-parted hair and classic pearls left her mesmerised. A dream took birth in her of someday working with ace director Mani Ratnam. And when dreams are heartfelt, the Universe conspires to fulfill them. Two decades later, Aditi Rao Hydari was ‘presented’ in the genius filmmaker’s Kaatru Veliyidai. Set against the backdrop of the Kargil war, Kaatru Veliyidai is a layered love story between fighter pilot Varun (Karthi) and doctor Leela Abraham (Aditi Rao Hydari). While being held captive, Varun reminisces about her and tries to redeem himself and his lost love. The poetic love story won critics over as it dealt with the complex emotions of a narcissistic and sexist officer and the healing love of the woman he loved. “The response has been overwhelming. I was presented with such care and attention. It has been a soul-satisfying experience,” says the gorgeous Aditi. Right now, she’s shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati. “It just makes me believe that if you believe in a dream, it comes true. The innocence of a dream is important,” she asserts. Aditi reveals it was Jaya Bachchan who suggested her name to SLB for Padmavati. “I have an instinctive affection for Amitji (Bachchan) and Jayaji. My mother was once said to resemble Jayaji. Perhaps that’s why the bond,” smiles Aditi who has acted with Bachchan in Wazir. Omung Kumar’s Bhoomi where she plays Sanjay Dutt’s daughter, has just released. She had a great time shooting with her co-star Sanjay Dutt. Says she, “I call him BFG - ‘The Big Friendly Giant’ from Roald Dahl’s similarly titled book. He’s so sweet. What I admire about him is that he’s an open book. He says whatever he feels. When we went to his house, he asked us for tea or coffee. But to me he said, ‘You’re my daughter (in the film). So you

must have milk’.” She continues, “Omung sir wondered if I was scared of Sanjay sir. But Sanjay sir has always been so sweet. He’d make me crack up on the set just before an intense scene. He’s hilarious. Sometimes he’d get ‘mock angry’ and would actually be laughing within.” She adds, “Sanjay sir loves feeding people. When we were in Agra, he’d get amazing Galouti kebabs, biryani etc from Jama Masjid.” As an actor, she says he’s a natural, who can switch on and off instantly. He can pull off a complicated scene in just one take. “Like me, he doesn’t believe in rehearsing much. That would help us do the scene instinctively.” Aditi, a trained Bharat Natyam dancer, made her onscreen debut in the Tamil film Sringaram in 2006. She grew popular after her performance in Sudhir Mishra’s 2011 romantic thriller Yeh Saali Zindagi. Later, she was seen in films like Rockstar, Murder 3, Khoobsurat and Fitoor. Since her Tamil debut, it’s taken her a while to make her presence felt in showbiz. Everyone has a different journey, she says. “To work your way up without playing the regular games that one is supposed to play, is difficult. My journey has been slow and steady but it’s good as long as you’re taking a step forward,” she maintains. She says she doesn’t want to be indebted to anyone. She wants to work with dignity and on her own terms. For Aditi being in front of the camera is like being in Enid Blyton’s On a Magic Faraway Tree’. “You can be anyone, do anything,” says the avid reader. She hates the word nepotism. Says she, “It’s true that people help their own here. But isn’t that true of any profession?” she asks irately.

sensitive, who’s interested in the arts like music, dance, sketching, reading… someone who’s passionate about his craft is attractive to her, she maintains. “People who have depth and character appear beautiful,” she elaborates, “Beautiful people are healthy inside out.” She doesn’t grudge the media scrutiny that comes with being a star. “The amount of love that you get is much more than the discomfort of being scrutinised. People are just doing their job,” she says. Recently, during her film’s screening, she had fever. “I knew that I’d look like a dead duck in the photographs. But I thought it’s okay if I look crazy one day. Actually, people are kind in our country, they’re not mean,” she says of the fans and paparazzi. She admits that the pressure of not reaching where you want to, can shatter even the strongest. But her optimism has kept her afloat. She confides, “I cry easily. If I’m upset, I’ll break down like a five-year-old. I start laughing also with equal ease. People can say I’m delusional but that’s how I am.” Well for someone who sells dreams, believing in them is as essential.

She dislikes the thought of being ‘average’, quality is what drives her. Her films may not do 100 or 200 crores. But as long as she does films that are memorable, it’s worth it. “Because 100 crores will be forgotten but what lasts is the quality and experience. A great example is Guru Dutt’s cinema,” she explains. Aditi hails from a royal family in Hyderabad. She’s the great granddaughter of Akbar Hydari, former Prime Minister of Hyderabad. Her maternal grandparents are Raja J Rameshwar Rao, who headed the administration of Wanaparthi state, and Shanta Rameshwar Rao, a much respected educationalist. Life in Mumbai with its clamour for success wasn’t easy for her. She smiles, “I was naïve and trusting. I’ve grown up amongst people who had positivity, dignity and grace. Then you come into a competitive field and you feel ‘Oh my God, I’ve been dropped into a jungle. I have to fend for myself’. It’s hard,” she confides. “Initially, I struggled to figure out what people expected you to be and who you are. I realised I could be actually unique just being myself. Like, I could be sexy but only in my way. Not in the way someone expects me to be.” She has devised her own philosophy of survival. “The lucky have a support system that helps them survive the uncertainty. But what matters in the long run is exceptional talent,” she says adding, “I’m sure manipulation and game playing happens, there must be deals that are made but I haven’t seen it at close quarters.” Her vintage beauty makes her seem exotic amongst the bevy of cosmetic wonders. “I can’t be proud of my beauty, it’s sheer genetics. I didn’t create it. The only thing I can be proud of is my work,” she reasons. “Sometimes, a good-looking person may not be attractive because he/she is boring, lacks personality, courage and spirit,” she opines. TAAPSEE PANNU: YET TO FIND OUT DEFINITION OF BEING AN ‘A-LISTED’ ACTRESS Taapsee Pannu: Yet To Find Out Definition Of Being An ‘A-Listed’ Actress Actress Taapsee Pannu, who has made her mark with films like “Pink”, “Naam Shabana” and “Judwaa 2”, says she is yet to crack the code of being an “A-list” in the Hindi film industry. The year 2017 has not been great for Bollywood, but Taapsee’s “Naam Shabana” can be counted as one of the highest grossing female-centric films, and “Judwaa 2” has also raked in the moolah. Yet, Taapsee wonders why she isn’t counted among the “top”. “I am yet to find out the definition of being an ‘A-listed’ actress. What does that mean? See, as an actress, I am happy that people are offering me good roles and I am earning success critically and commercially. “But it bothers me when a designer says, ‘No, Taapsee can’t be my muse or the show stopper, I want an ‘A-lister’ actress for this collection. “It happened with the brand endorsements as well. So, I am saying that I am ready to give the entrance exam of entering the club of ‘A-listed’ actresses, but can someone please tell me the formula… Maybe awards? I do not know.” Taapsee transitioned from the south Indian film industry to the Hindi movie world. She made her debut in Bollywood with “Chashme Baddoor” in 2013, and landed roles in films like “Baby”, “Running Shaadi”, “The Ghazi Attack”, “Pink”, “Naam Shabana” and “Judwaa 2”. She does not fear failure. Remembering her early days in the Telugu film industry, Taapsee said: “You know, it is funny now, but in the beginning of my career, some of the films failed at the box office and filmmakers stopped casting me saying I am bringing bad luck to their film. “The funny thing is that in those films, my contribution was nothing but three songs and five scenes. I have seen so much failure in the south that I know that we cannot control our success rate. “It’s not about our desire to perform in a great story. At

the end of it, box office result matters. And the weird thing is that we do not know the formula of that.” She says she has been “really lucky” to have worked in commercial potboilers as well as content-driven. “But I think it is the responsibility of an actor to find the balance because the film industry is ready to give you a tag in no time,” she said. Having said that, Taapsee’s successful portrayals have been those of women with a fighter instinct. Has it been a conscious choice of doing women-centric films? Taapsee said: “No. Actually, I did not get an opportunity to do so, maybe because I have a very natural fighter instinct that filmmakers have noticed and offered me roles in films like ‘Baby’ or ‘Naam Shabana’ that need toughness, actions. “I am an outspoken person in real life.” She also says fails to understand why people feel that women essaying ornamental roles in movies do not require ‘artistic skill’. “Who said that looking good is not a task? There are so many girls with a well maintained body, but will they be able to walk the beachside in front of the camera wearing a swimsuit? “Carrying your body in a certain manner to look sexy is also an art. One needs to learn that, so we should respect such a performance equally as we do of a de-glam, realistic performance in films.” On the work front, Taapsee has also started shooting Anubhav Sinha’s new directorial venture “Mulk”, also featuring Rishi Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, Neena Gupta and Prateik Babbar.

Akshay Kumar: An Actor Is Nothing Without Comedy A

long with action, Akshay Kumar is also known for his comic timing. The Bollywood star says an actor is nothing without comedy. “Comedy is an art of which imitation and roast are a part of. It’s always about the way you perceive the art that makes a difference. I am of the opinion that an actor is nothing without comedy,” Akshay said in a statement. “I have been in so many movies where comedy has been an essential element,” he added. The actor will be seen as ‘super judge’ on “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge”. Talking about the show, he said: “I would love for the contestants on the show to make fun of me. I think I would enjoy it thoroughly.” “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge”, which will be aired on Star Plus starting from Saturday, will also feature comedians Zakir Khan, Mallika Dua and Hussain Dalal as

Shah Rukh Khan: I Have Never Done Anything For The Love Of Money

S

uperstar Shah Rukh Khan has said money has never been the prime motivator for him to take on a project - be it films or a business venture. The 51-year-old actor, who is one of the highest-paid actors in Bollywood, said he is the same lower middle class boy, who still believes he got more than what he desired. "(Money) never did and it never will. I am well to do and God has been kind to me in every aspect of my life - professionally, economically and financially and more than that emotionally I have never ever done anything for the love of money. "I say this from the point of view of a lower middle class boy, who has had much more than he had imagined or dreamt of in the wildest of dreams. People may think I am an entrepreneur, but I have never done anything for the liking or love of money. I do things because I love doing them," Shah Rukh told reporters here at the launch press conference of his upcoming show "TEDTalks India Nayi Soch". The actor said youngsters today must understand that money is the least important thing that should drive them towards their goals. "I would say this to every youngster that if you desire to do something one of the things that we surely follow is money but (I think) it is the least important gaps that we try to fill in when we try to do something as work, job or love and hobby. Shah Rukh said he is excited about the upcoming inspirational talk show and hopes people will connect with it as much as he does. "I did TED Talks is perhaps the closest things to my heart I am not saying this because Uday Shankar and Gaurav are friends or Chris as they are good to me I say it genuinely. I hope people also love it as much as I do. It is important for me that this gets loved by everyone," he said. The show will air on Star Plus channel soon.

H

arma has now turned designer and on Tuesday launched her new entrepreneurial venture, clothing line 'Nush'. She says it is daunting and she is excited but nervous too. "It is a really special day for me.. this is something I had been planning for the past one and a half years, and quite honestly as I stand here in front of everyone, I am excited but at the same time, I am extremely nervous. Because when you put yourself out there like that it can be a little daunting but I am really happy that I am doing it and I am really glad that I am doing it" said Anushka at the launch of her new venture on Tuesday.

Anushka Sharma On New Clothing Line: Excited But Nervous Too

"Because I've always done something that I love, whether it was starting to make films with my production Clean Slate Films. And today, whether it is doing something that I love which is wearing good cloths, so I present my venture, something very special to me, it is a clothing line, Nush," she said about her new venture. With Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan and many more celebrities having their own labels and clothing line, so Anushka, when asked about the big rush to enter the fashion industry "rat-race", said it was the more, the merrier. "I don't it is a rat-race as such, I think the more the merrier. It is a great thing that you have fashion available to you, like this. More brands, more designs, more styles, more choice and if I can enable and add value to that, I think that is a great thing. I don't see it in negative at all; this reflects my aesthetics, my sense of style," she said. About challenges of turning designer for a fashion brand, she said: "Challenges, you face in everything you do, but for me, this is something that helps me focus. When I am facing a challenge, I feel more focused, more driven, more involved and (it is) something I enjoy doing. On the film front, Anushka is gearing up for her own production 'Pari', Aanand L. Rai's next starring Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif as well as YRF's 'Sui Dhaaga' opposite Varun Dhawan.

Saiyami Kher proves she's ready to take on the world in her latest interview!

F

itness is a way of life for model- turned- actor Saiyami Kher, who wowed us with her sculpted body in her debut film Mirzya. Ask her about her gym routine and she reveals she hates going to the gym as she feels claustrophobic in confined spaces. She needs to feel the elements to be in her element and that’s why running is her favourite form of exercise. Says she, “I don’t like fixed regimes either. You should keep doing some physical activity or the other to burn calories. That’s the best way to lose weight. I do like to run. I run 10-12 kms on alternate days. When in Mumbai, I run from my home to the Bandra sea-link, a good 10 kms away from my house.” She mentions that the only time she dedicatedly went to the gym was when she was prepping for Mirzya. It was a film about reincarnation and she was required to look muscular in one avatar and lean in the next. “I joined a gym and did crossfit training,” she smiles. “I also learnt kickboxing. Crossfit is basically a mix of weight training with cardio. I used to do 350 squats and eight kilometres on the rowing machine during that intense training. But it was totally worth it in the end.” She is the brand ambassador of Adidas Running, no mean feat as it entailed running a full marathon, which is 42 kms. She always dreamt of doing it and was happy that she nailed it last year. She mentions it’s more of a mental feat than a physical one because after a point, the distance starts getting to you. You have to fight the loneliness and stay alert. “I had a bad injury during the marathon but still finished the full 42 kms. That has been my biggest achievement in life,” she claims. Her next goal is to take part in the Ironman marathon, where you not only run but swim and cycle as well. Milind Soman was crowned the Indian champion sometime ago and she yearns to emulate her idol. Other celebrities that inspire her include Roger Federer and Sachin Tendulkar. She says one reason the Master Blaster was able to have such a long career was because he was supremely fit. She is a major cricket buff and reveals she could have got selected in the women's national team if modelling hasn’t come calling. She still plays cricket with her actor friends. “Angad Bedi, Gaurav Kapoor, Purab Kohli, we have a small group and we play together whenever we find the time,” she mentions. Among among film folks, the one man whom she’s totally in awe of as far as fitness is concerned is none other than Akshay Kumar. With a childlike glee in her voice, she narrates she was lucky enough to play cricket with him twice. “Once, he took me as his batting partner as he knew I was into running,” she trills. “I knew he was fast but had no idea about his speed. He would finish two runs even as I ran for one. It was super fun.” Akshay used to stretch between overs and kept himself busy throughout, commenting that that’s the reason he’s the way he is. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was her director during her debut film and Saiyami reveals that the seriouslooking filmmaker, known for his different take on cinema, was a national level swimmer and a water polo

player. Mehra and she bonded on the sets of Mirzya when he came to know she was an avid swimmer as well. “We used to talk about swimming all the time and he gave me tips on how to increase the length of my stroke in the pool. And also how to build up speed and stamina,” she chirps about her mentor. Cricket, swimming, running, is there anything else that she follows? Ask her that and she breaks into a smile and reveals she got into St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, through sports quota. She was on the college team for nine sporting disciplines at one time. “I represented the college in badminton, cricket, table tennis, throw ball, basketball, hand ball, volleyball, swimming and running. So being involved in a physical activity has become a habit, Even today I start getting irritated by evening if I don’t get to play something during the day,” she grins. “I have hung a cricket ball from a rope at home, so that I can practise my stance. When I am in Nashik, I go trekking with friends. I still play badminton twice a week at Khar Gymkhana.” She says her father is a huge sports enthusiast and her passion for sports maybe genetic. Her mother, Uttara Kher, was a Miss India in 1982 and Saiyami’s hourglass figure can be attributed to her mother's genes. Saiyami shot to fame a few years ago thanks to some insanely sexy photos in a beach calendar shoot. Those pictures reveal that she doesn’t believe in going all out to develop that size zero figure. “If I were to wear a bikini for a shoot, I’d cut down on sugar and carbs for fifteen days.” She maintains that weight loss is 70 per cent diet and 30 per cent workout. She believes in eating everything in moderation. “I like to keep it natural and prefer eating home-cooked food. I add ghee on rotis. I detox my body twice a year by going on an all-fruit diet.” Her day starts with her imbibing one litre of water first thing in the morning. She has two pieces of toast before going on a run. She has a four egg-white omelette as a post-workout meal. She snacks on fruit if she feels hungry. Lunch is dal, bhakri and sabzi. Dinner is usually at 8:30pm, comprising grilled chicken/grilled fish and boiled vegetables. “If I am going out for a party or for an event then I have my dinner at home before stepping out. I don’t like late night eating,” she adds. Surprisingly, Saiyami doesn’t care much for six-packs. She’d rather be ripped and lean like an athlete than sport six-packs. “People should understand that film celebrities go to the gym because they need to have a certain physique,” she points out. “But physical fitness doesn’t mean you have to be aesthetically goodlooking. You can be fit even if you don’t have sixpacks.” Her advice for those willing to invest in their bodies is to focus on the lower body because that’s where your strength comes from. She emphasises that you core has to be strong. “If you are running you have to do some weight and strength training. If you don’t have basic strength, you can get injured badly. Strengthening of the knees and the ankles is important.” Another point she stresses is learning the right techniques as it helps you avoid injuries and reach your goals in a systematic manner. She’s an extrovert and loves to organise Sunday meets Nov 2017 | Global Movie

where she gets together with like-minded individuals and goes for a run. She wonders why friends hang out together they go for a movie or to a club, “Why can’t they come together to run instead?” she asks. “Instead of eating and drinking, friends should play cricket or some other sport. It keeps you younger too,” she says. Motivating yourself to exercise everyday is a bitch and Saiyami says music helps her focus. “I used to keep my music alarm set to the Bhaag Milkha tu bhaag Milkha tune. Then, I stick a note in front of my bed where I write my goals for the next day. That helps me a lot. I love to listen to music while running. I don’t listen to Western music. Instead, I go for Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar songs,” she reveals. Her vacations revolve around sports activities as well. She regularly treks in the Sahyadris during the monsoon. During a recent trip to Hawaii she walked some 15 kilometres each day. “One should set goals during vacations too,” she adds. “It helps you keep focussed.”

Find out why Ileana D’Cruz calls herself a misfit in B-town! I

leana D’Cruz is on a definite career high with some great films like Barfi!, Main Tera Hero, Rustom, Mubarakan and now Baadshaho to her credit. Interestingly, even after tasting success in her initial years of career, she feels she’s still a misfit in the industry. She also says that she’s not in the competition with any of her contemporaries in these glitzy lanes of Btown. Talking about her being a part of this success race, Ileana has an interesting thing to say. Here’s what she told us, “I’m not in the race. I don’t want to get caught up in this race to the number one spot. I don’t know what it takes to be the number one actress. I don’t know how people decide to call someone number one.” Talking about it, the actress further added, “I think I’m happy just being good at what I’m doing. I’m happy with doing good films that have great content. With films that push me. Films that people like and films that actually do well at the box-office,”

Small steps, big success: Manit Joura talks about his passion for acting

H

ow is a film set different from a television set? Both the mediums are different. When I go to a film set, I know exactly what I’m going to do because I receive the script much in advance. I prepare for the character. I spend a lot of time with the script, with the director and with the cast doing rehearsals. I tend not to talk much, just immerse myself in the scene. On the other hand, TV is spontaneous. And because there are last minute changes, there are too many surprises. I don’t mean TV is unorganized; it’s given me a lot.

watched his films in acting school. I just wanna be like him. But the real reason I was inclined towards films is Sanjay Dutt. I love him. If I were to meet him, I’d go crazy. Otherwise I’m not starstruck. In Hollywood, I like Daniel-Day Dewis and Leonardo Di Caprio.

Does the 24-hour deadline in a TV show affect the creativity of an artiste?

I’d have loved to be a part of Newton. I loved the film. As I did Pan Singh Tomar and The Lunchbox. But it doesn’t mean that I don’t want to be part of a commercial film.

Both are different mediums. The expectations from the audience are different. Working back to back you do have to let go of a few details. Though I try to be as precise as possible. In films, you have to be careful about the graph of your actor. Was modelling a stepping stone to acting? Yes, modelling is a passport to acting. There have been actors like John Abraham, Dino Morea and others, who came into films after modelling. I didn’t have much love for modelling though. My passion has been acting. It’s addictive, something I want to do for the rest of my life. How did you get your first break?

And actresses? Deepika Padukone. She’s real and natural. And that’s very rare. I also like Parineeti Chopra and Swara Bhaskar. Any recent movies you wish you were part of?

You seem to be drawn towards content-driven cinema? Rather, character-driven. It pushes you as an actor. What are things you like to do when you’re not working? I am motorcyclist. I love to ride motorcycles no matter what mood I am in. If given a choice, I’d never sit in four-wheeler. I ride a BMW R 1200 GS, it’s an expensive motor cycle. I’ve travelled around 15 countries on my motorcycle. I just finished my trip from Mumbai to Singapore and back home. It was terrific

My father had once said, “The day you appear on screen that day I’ll gift you a motorcycle.” When the first episode (12/24 Karol Bagh) of my show was aired, my father gifted me a sports bike. I was riding the motorcycle around India Gate in Delhi. At the signal, there was a man in a taxi. He slid the window down and asked me if I was an actor. I said yes. He told me he was holding an audition for a Yash Raj film. I didn’t take it seriously. Three-four days later he sent me a message on Facebook about the audition again. I showed up for the auditions. I had to goof around like a Punjabi. They loved the spontaneous act. Soon, they asked me to join the team. I didn’t care about the remuneration. It was a Yash Raj film (Band Baaja Baaraat). I just had to do it. The rest is history. Actors you’re inspired by? I admire how strong Rajkummar Rao is going. He’s balancing so well between commercial and contemporary films. But I look up to Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. If I ever meet Irrfan sir, I’ll touch his feet before shaking hands. I’ve Nov 2017 | Global Movie

Zoya Akhtar: Untrue That I Make Only Glamorous Films

H

aving romanced the big screen with her masterfully shot films like Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Zoya Akhtar is making her transition to the digital platform. The filmmaker, along with Reema Kagti, is helming a web series titled Made In Heaven. The 10episode series revolves around two wedding planners based in Delhi. “The series is shaping up well. We're currently shooting it and hopefully, it will be out by early next year," she said, of the show that will be produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment.

Akhtar's shift to the digital platform is also, in a way, her rebuttal to criticism that she only helms big-budget films that focus on the elite. Speaking to us at the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour, she said, "People have always told me that I make glamorous films, but that is not true. Akhtar says the critique is a classic case of selective memory bias. "Whatever becomes popular is what defines a person. I got critical acclaim for Luck By Chance [2009], but that doesn't define me. Instead, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara does. But that's how the industry functions."

Aamir Khan: Azad Rao Khan Is Not Treated As A Star Kid A

amir Khan is truly the Mr Perfectionist in Bollywood and he is known to give priority to his work over family. But that doesn't mean he ignores his family or does not spend time with his children. Aamir, is in fact quite a doting dad. He has two kids from his first wife Reena Dutta, Junaid and Ira and a son with second wife Kiran Rao- Azad Rao Khan. He says that when Junaid and Ira were growing up he wasn't able to spend time with them due to his film career. But now he makes it a point to spend as much time possible with his son Azad Rao Khan." I spend two hours playing with him in the evening, from six to eight. I even bathe him, eat with him. I keep telling my manager to make sure that I am not disturbed for these two hours since it is our special father-son bonding time." It is well established that Azad is the apple of Aamir's eye, but the superstar is a strict parent as well. Aamir adds, " Azad is allowed to watch only half an hour of television for a day. That too only cartoon channels. He is not treated like a 'star kid' so that even when he grows up he doesn't present himself as one. Only his valid demands are fulfilled, if he insists on watching more television I and Kiran simply put our foot down."Aamir Khan's next film 'Secret Superstar' which is also based on the parent-child relationship will hit the screens on Diwali.

Vinod Khanna: 9 little known facts about the actor.

villain, a star, a sanyasi and a politician, Vinod Khanna, also known as “the monk who sold his Mercedes” and Swami Vinod Bharti, succumbed to cancer at the age of 70 earlier this year. Today would have been his 71st birthday.

A

3. Khanna finally got the opportunity to expand his repertoire when Gulzar noticed his ability to meld brute force with emotional vulnerability and cast him in leading roles in Mere Apne (1972) and Achanak (1973).

Born in a Punjabi family to Kamla and Kishanchand Khanna, a textiles, dyes and chemicals businessman, in 1946, in Peshawar, British India (now in Pakistan), his family moved to Bombay when India was partitioned.

4. In the songless Achanak (1973), he won rave reviews for his performance, wherein he had to kill his adulterous wife.

“We reached Bombay, where my father had an office. Initially, we stayed with friends and relatives. I was a good student and a favourite with the teachers. In 1957, when I was in class VI, we moved to Delhi,” Khanna had revealed in an old interview in 2002. While at the boarding school, he fell in love with motion pictures after watching Mughal-e-Azam. After graduating from Sydenham College with a commerce degree, he embarked on his movie career. Considered as one of the best looking actors in Bollywood, Khanna became popular with the audience and featured in innumerable lead roles. But his love for spirituality soon made him lose his superstardom to Amitabh Bachchan. Talking about the era when he left the B-Town, Khanna had said, ‘‘I have always been a seeker. In the film industry, I had money, glamour, fame but wondered now what? Initially, I visited Osho’s ashram in Pune every weekend. I even diverted shooting schedules to Pune. I was finally initiated on December 31, 1975. When I announced my retirement from films, nobody believed me.” Detailing his stint as sanyasi, he had noted, ‘‘I was Osho’s mali: I am one of the few Indians to have stayed with Osho in Rajneeshpuram, the city he built in America. I spent four years with Osho. I was his gardener, I cleaned the toilets, I did the dishes, and his clothes were tried out on me because we were, physically, of the same stature.’‘

5. He attempted risky, offbeat roles too. He broke the taboo about lovemaking in Aruna Vikas’ Shaque (1976), while his mature and complex performance as a murder suspect in the movie was lauded. 6. Between 1971-1982, the actor starred in 47 multihero films like Ek Aur Ek Gyarah, Hera Pheri, Khoon Pasina, Amar Akbar Anthony, Zameer, Parvarish and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. 7. Reportedly, Khanna had landed the Qurbani role in 1980 after Amitabh Bachchan refused it. The film later became the highest-grossing film of that year. 8. Khanna became the first B’Town hero to retire from the films when he was at his peak. His search for spiritual satisfaction took him to Osho. He became a disciple of Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) in 1975 and in the early 1980s, he shifted to Rajneeshpuram in the US, where he spent his time cleaning dishes and working as Osho’s gardener. 9. After joining the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in 1997, the ‘abhineta-turned-neta’ proved his mettle in politics too. He represented Punjab’s Gurdas Parliamentary seat four times in the Lok Sabha and became the Minister of State for External Affairs in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Talking about the end of his spiritual break, Khanna continued, “I went back to Bollywood. Returning to the movies was the easy part. It was leaving my guru in America which was an almost-impossible decision so much attached was I to Osho. He asked me to run the Puna ashram, but I said no. That is the most difficult no I have ever said in my life.’‘ Here are some more lesser-known facts about his life: 1. Before he became popular for the cop roles, Khanna, who is known for his distinct style and persona, made quite an impression as a scowling dacoit in many flicks. The ‘villain-turned-hero,’ who debuted in Sunil Dutt’s 1968 film Man Ka Meet as a villain, played supporting or low-down characters in the films such as Purab Aur Paschim, Sachaa Jhutha, Aan Milo Sajna and Mastana in 1970 and Mera Gaon Mera Desh and Elaan in 1971. 2. For Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), Dharmendra revealed, that Khanna literally bled to infuse realism into the role. Nov 2017 | Global Movie

Did you know Rajkummar Rao had auditioned for Ali Fazal’s role in Dame Judi Dench’s Victoria & Abdul?

R

ajkummar Rao reveals why he wasn't selected for the role of Abdul in Victoria & Abdul... Rajkummar Rao is one of the most talented actors in not just India but the world. After doing various characters in varied genres it is difficult to believe that even Rajkummar Rao can be rejected for a role he wishes to do. But shockingly that happened. Few weeks ago when I had caught up with him to chat about the success of his recent films and his characters, I asked him if he had ever done something ridiculously funny to get a role in a film. He revealed that there was one role which he indeed wanted to do and even auditioned for but was not selected for it. He revealed,“Not funny but ya, I auditioned for Victoria and Abdul which Ali Fazal is doing and I think it’s a great script. So that is something which I really wanted to do and I auditioned for it but ya, for whatever reason filmmakers thought that probably I didn’t fit the part.” As I mentioned above, it is indeed shocking to know that even an actor of such stature won’t be selected for a role but that happened. What is also applaudable is his sheer honesty about it. In an industry which thrives on show off and usually work under a garb, Rajkummar Rao came out and revealed about auditioning for a role and losing the part to Ali Fazal. Victoria & Abdul is based on the novel by Shrabani Basu. It is about Abdul Karim, a boy from Jhansi who became a personal servant of the Empress of India and went on to become the Indian secretary. He taught Urdu to the Queen and enlightened her about Islam. They shared a close relationship that created a stir in the royal court. The film stars Academy award winning actress Dame Judi Dench and Ali Fazal in the lead role. It saw its international release on October 6, 2017 and is slated for an October 13, 2017 release in India.

Salman Khan’s designer Ashley Rebello reveals the actor is NOT fussy about his outfits, but conditions apply Salman Khan's designer Ashley Rebello opens up about dressing the actor year after year on Bigg Boss and in his films, what are the restrictions and his favourites...

I

f you’ve got used to seeing Salman Khan in formal blazers, weekend after weekend in Bigg Boss, then having him breaking the routine over the weekend with a casual avatar must have come as a welcome change. It’s because this year, the channel has asked his designer, Ashely Rebello, to give him formals on Saturdays and jackets and jeans on Sundays. “Luckily, people have loved what Salman wore last weekend. So, I will be giving him a one-piece suit jacket with a semicasual stylish shirt on Saturdays and denims, T-shirts, with jackets (denim or leather) on Sundays,” says Ashley. # Extreme reactions Ashley points out that dressing up Salman for the show for the last seven years has garnered extreme reactions. He receives flak as well as flowers. Deciding the look each year includes choosing from the current trend and colours in vogue, which often backfires. “People don’t understand that and make strange comments. This year, I haven’t received any negative remarks yet. Last year, people liked his style, but they thought it was monotonous,” says the ace designer. # Suits him fine About his choice of only suits even though the vibe of the show is not quite formal, Ashley says, “It’s what the channel wants and is about dressing Salman stylishly, while maintaining his vibe. One needs to understand that he’s 52 and not 25. Jeans and jackets are not his style anymore. Suits talk about his personality,” says Ashley. The designer has also not moved away from the suits even though Salman, more often than not, takes them off mid-show. He smiles, “It still looks cool and stylish, so I suppose the channel doesn’t object either.” # A new look every year For every season of Bigg Boss, Ashley gives Salman a new look after receiving the channel’s brief that the designer has to go with, post discussions. “In the first two years, the audiences saw him only in jeans, Tshirts, and leather jackets. So they asked me to change his style and I gave him suits, semi suits, jackets, his look from Tiger etc. Then they said give him coloured jackets; I did that, but received flak for it,” he says, alluding to maroon-red ombre, olive green, blue with bright red print jackets.

you bothered?'” As long as Salman is not unhappy, it doesn’t affect Ashley what others have to say. # All the restriction “I can’t give him small checks, whites, stripes, or Houndstooth suits because they all jitter on screen. Linen fabric is ruled out because it gets crumpled and looks bad by the end of the episode. I’d love to dress him up in these and make him look cool but there are restrictions. And given that, I think I do a fantastic job,” he smiles. # No Fuss Salman Styling Salman is never a hassle because the actor is very open to suggestions, Ashley tells us. Of course, the actor does dislike the clothes at times but it takes just about two trials before the look is finalised. At home, Salman is happiest in his shorts and T-shirts while for a casual outing, it’s denims and tees. “When it comes to formals, he wears jackets and ties only if he absolutely has to or it’s a formal shirt with trousers. He likes his pants to be well-fitting and worn out with a slight flair at the bottom. It looks nice on him because it gives him stature and makes him look taller.” Ashley also uses monochrome colours on the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor, like black on black, grey on grey, taupe on taupe, etc. “One tonal quality looks nice on him and gives him elegance,” he says. # His favourites Salman doesn’t really give Ashley inputs on style. He likes easy clothes like softer T-shirts and more relaxed fit trousers and is averse to heavy embroidery, or prints or too much textured fabric. “He likes everything simple and nice,” says Ashley. The actor has a special fondness for black, midnight blue and military green colours and has a great passion for shoes. Even though he’s not fussy, you won’t often catch him in pinks and light purples. Ashley says, “I try when I want him to wear something different but he gives me that look and says no,” he laughs, “Times like those, sometimes he wins and sometimes I do.” From all the looks that Ashley has designed for him, Salman complimented him for the tight-fitting uniform in Dabangg that became a rage and his look for Tiger Zinda Hai the most.

Ashley admits that it’s a challenge for him to style Salman year after year and also adds pressure on him. “There’s pressure with every film I do with him, too. For instance, people asked me why I gave him ill-fitting pants for Tubelight. I need to remind them that I had the director’s brief and he played a slow person and not Salman Khan,” says the designer. # Shrugging criticism off All the criticism Ashely receives doesn’t perturb him, though. He says, “It used to bother me when I was young. But like Salman, I have matured. I know what looks good irrespective of what anybody says. Is there anything that can’t look good on him? People say he looks good even in shorts and a gunjee.” Just like him, Salman doesn’t pay attention to criticism either. “Whenever I tell him that people haven’t liked his look, he asks me, ‘You think it looks good, na? Parineeti Chopra: Was Down In The Dumps For Almost A Year A

ctress Parineeti Chopra says she was "down in the dumps" for almost a year, but her brother Sahaj helped her in overcoming depression. Parineeti talked about the person close to her heart ahead of the TV premiere of Hollywood romantic drama film "Me Before You" on Romedy NOW on Saturday. "I think every human being who considers themselves to be emotionally evolved, always have this one very big event or one person who comes into their lives and completely changes the way they think. And I can say very confidently that happened in my life," Parineeti said in a statement. "A couple of years ago, I went through a very low phase emotionally in my life where I was really down in the dumps. It wasn't like a person especially came into to my life, but it was a person who has always been in my life -- my brother Sahaj. "Sahaj was the guy who was my voice of reason, he was the calming factor. He is the guy who knows me, he knows my pulse, he understands me, he understands the grain that I am made of. So, speaking to him, being with him everyday really used to give me that confidence in myself and really took me out of that phase," she added. Parineeti said her fight against depression lasted for "almost a year", but she fought it and emerged a "more positive" person. "So, Sahaj thank you and I love you. You are my baby, you are my brother, you are my life, you are my soulmate, and no man will be able to ever replace that, and I am proud to say that I love you," Parineeti said.

Tamannaah talks about doing the Telugu remake of Kangana Ranaut's Queen Q

ueen, helmed by Vikas Bhal was the story of a girl’s solo honeymoon in Paris after getting left at the altar on her wedding day. Rani played by Kangana Ranaut became one of the most loved Bollywood characters of recent times. And just yesterday we informed you that Kangana Ranaut's 2013 hit film Queen is being remade in 4 different South Indian languages. Tamanaah has signed the Telugu remake, Kajal Aggarwal the Tamil one, Manjima Mohan the Malayalam and Parul Yadav the Kannada. Tamaannaah is one of the biggest stars down South. With an array of blockbusters in her kitty and add to it the Baahubali mania... she's on top of ever director's list. The Telugu and Malayalam remakes will be directed by Nellkanta and the Tamil and Kannada ones by Ramesh Arvind. In an exclusive conversation with Filmfare, Tamannaah spoke about the film for the first time. Here's what she said... “Queen was a conscious decision to be honest. I want to focus on doing films that put emphasis on mature screenplay as well as women oriented scripts. I'm very drawn to the state of self discovery as every woman goes through different stages of realisation and at times you want to sit back and reflect back on your life decisions. I think Kangana was pitch perfect in the film and established the fact that she is much more than a pretty face.” When asked about the competition given the fact that three other remakes are simultaneously being made, she said, "The comptetion I was approached for the Tamil version in the start but ended up doing the Telugu version. The idea of being threatened by competition doesn't crop up because I think every Queen, whether Tamil, Telugu, Malayam or Kannada will bring to life a new perspective of self discovery. A different director is on board for every language and hence the screenplay would be more layered and unique with the core essence being intact. With regards to the preparation for the role I'm pretty much like Queen in real life as I will portray in reel. I can relate excellently with the core ideology of the film.” Woot, woot... we're pretty darn excited to see Tamannaah essay one of the most loved roles of recent times. Aren't you too?

Irrfan Khan: Let's not complicate relationships I

rrfan Khan on changing sexual dynamics, virtues of going indie in Hollywood after a slew of tent-pole films and why playing Sahir Ludhianvi is his dream role. Irrfan Khan always manages to surprise you. His upcoming film, 'Qarib Qarib Singlle', seems like a sunny rom-com on the surface. While admitting that it is in that happy space, the actor said that it also touches on a more significant issue, of how gender dynamics play out in a sexually repressed society "When a man from such a society comes close to a woman, he brings along with him plenty of misconceptions and has to be educated on how a woman should be treated on a date. The equations vary from society to society. In a male-dominated one like ours, the woman is the victim," he reasoned. Irrfan believes sexual bliss is the biggest gift of nature and it's inconceivable to him that certain sections of society and the system as a whole should want to condition and dictate relationships, deciding who one should woo and shouldn't. Interestingly, the actor's co-production, the English-Bengali bilingual, 'Doob: No Bed Of Roses', is finally opening in India, US, Canada, Australia and Bangladesh. In this film about love and loss, he plays a character who gets married for a second time to a woman who's years younger and was once his daughter's friend. The subject invited the wrath of conservatives, leading to a ban on its release in Bangladesh which has since lifted. "Sexuality shouldn't be hidden behind the facade of religion or judged by age. It's not a crime to be in a relationship with an older man or a younger woman. Love is already complicated in today's times, with arranged marriages and joint families that gave a couple plenty of buffers, making way for singular families, and the social media

giving both the sexes equal opportunities to mingle. Let's not complicate relationships now with all these diktats," reasons the man, admitting that there's a lot of love brimming inside him which hasn't always been able to find expression in real life, which is why the endless chasing after it on screen. The internationally-acclaimed actor recently wrapped up 'Puzzle with Kelly Macdonald' and admits the intimate, personal film was a refreshing break from the big-budget studio franchises he's been associated with, like 'The Amazing Spider-Man', 'Jurassic World' and 'Inferno'. "It's a beautiful coming-of-age story of a woman, played by the amazingly talented Kelly, that gave me a chance to explore a different aspect as an actor," he said.

for the final script. It's exciting to be teaming up with Deepika Padukone after 'Piku'. I'm also waiting to work with Shoojit Sircar and Anurag Basu again," he said, In a year of box-office disasters, his comedy-drama Hindi Medium has stood out like a beacon of light and Irrfan admits that producer Dinesh Vijan could be announcing a sequel soon. “I'd be happy to be a part of it. My only condition is that we should not encash on its success but get a plot that is better than the first and will take the franchise forward with an equally relevant issue," he avers, pointing out that while once he had done films to make his presence felt, today he wouldn't want to work for money or to consolidate his position. "The stories should resonate with me.

Irrfan is equally excited about Ronnie Screwvala's 'Kaarwan' which he has been filming with Malayalam actor Dulquer Salmaan, Mithila Palkar and Amla. "I met Amla for the first time and she's doing some wonderful work. Kerala is God's own country because the state has banned all skyscrapers," he quipped.

Has he ever thought of writing his own life story, you wonder, and he admits that there was an offer a few years ago. "But I don't have much to say. To present my own version of my life would be boring for me. If someone were to write about me critically, in a style that is entertaining and engaging, maybe I'll think about it. For now the focus is on acting," he shrugged.

Meanwhile, Meghna Gulzar's 'Talvar', featuring him as an investigative officer, made a strong case for the Tandons, accused in the murders of their daughter and household help. It was inspired by the 2008 Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj double murders in Noida. Talwars since have been acquitted. Irrfan recalls that what struck him immediately about Vishal Bhardwaj's script was that at a time when the Talwars were being tried by the media, he offered a different perspective to what might have happened that fateful night. Now, he's gung-ho about another Vishal script that will be his assistant Honey Trehan's directorial debut. "I'm waiting

When it comes to acting, his dream project remains Sahir Ludhianvi. He believes he understands the poetlyricist best his passion, genius and sensibilities. "If it's in my destiny I will play him in the biopic. If I don't get the chance, I will bring shades of Sahir into my other roles.," he muses, pointing out that just that morning in the shower, while ruminating on another film, he was wondering why he couldn't recite Sahir's famous lines, "Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khyaal aataa hai," at the end. "I'm always looking for opportunities and excuses to recite those lines that resonate with the love Sahir believed in, which I believe in," he smiled

10 years of Jab We Met: Imtiaz Ali reveals why he will never remake the Kareena Kapoor Khan-Shahid Kapoor starrer

In a tell-all, Imtiaz Ali explains why he will never remake Jab We Met.

M

ain Apni Favourite Hoon’ – a line that has stayed with us for 10 years now and still cheers you up when you’re at your lowest. Jab We Met gave us one of the best romantic films of the decade and a very strong female character in Geet Dhillon. It was one of Imtiaz Ali’s best films and definitely one of my favourites. People loved the film so much that they still quote the lines from the movie in real life situations. For Imtiaz, Kareena Kapoor Khan was the first and a perfect choice to play Geet.

a sequel of the film but there was no story left. Nothing left to be said and that’s why I never made it. I think if something is good and appreciated, there is a demand for it to be replicated. But once you repeat it, people stop liking it and they’ll also stop liking Geet. So I never want to take that chance.

Imtiaz talks about his fondest memories of the film, now that it completes 10 years, working with Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan after they had just broken up and possibilities of a sequel or a remake of Jab We Met, in this exclusive interview. Here are excerpts from the interview.

No, I know them as very good professionals and that nothing is going to affect that.

What are your fondest memories of the film? Actually, the moment I remember more fondly is one where after the Punjab schedule got over, I had gone to this place where Guru Govind Singh had rested. When the Punjab schedule was over, I could not believe that we did it because the odds were against us to actually be able to shoot that schedule in that way. Shooting for the major part of the film there seemed like an impossibility when it began because there were so many things and we didn’t have the time to plan anything.

Kareena and Shahid had just broken up before doing Jab We Met. Were you scared that it’ll affect your film in any way?

What convinced you to cast Shahid and Kareena opposite each other? Kareena was always my first choice because I thought she’ll always be interested in that part. Shahid, I thought would be very young for the part but then I met him and realised that he is a mature guy. He is more mature for his age and that’s why I decided to cast him. What if Jab We Met had to be remade? Since a lot of directors are into remakes presently. No, I would never want to remake Jab We Met. In fact, Jab We Met has been remade in regional cinema and it’s a good feeling when your films are being remade but I would not want to remake this one.

When we reached Punjab, I was thinking one or the other thing is going to mess up and there’s no way in hell that we’ll be able to shoot in Punjab. There was some sort of a blessing and we were able to finish shooting for the film over there so that’s the moment I remember the most.

In case, a remake does happen, who do you think will fit into Geet Dhillon and Aditya’s shoes perfectly?

Would you want to change anything about the film?

Which one of your films is the closest to your heart?

I would change a lot of things. I would basically change the places where we’ve shot some scenes. I’ll try to shoot Ratlam in Ratlam, Manali in Manali and Shimla in Shimla. What we have ended up doing is that Ratlam is shot in Manali, Manali is shot in Shimla, Shimla is shot in Manali. So there is a mixture which I would have avoided.

Alia Bhatt can be Geet. As for Aditya, I don’t know who can play his role.

Rockstar What are you working on next? Right now there is nothing. I’m just done working on a story. There is nothing to tell as of now.

With your subsequent films, do you think you’ve set a benchmark too high with Jab We Met?

What do you feel about JHMS’ box office performance? Do box office collections really matter to you?

Not really. Because obviously Jab We Met is one of the most loved films of mine. At the same time, one makes different kinds of films and hopes to set benchmarks of different kinds. With any film, I would like it to be the highest benchmark to reach. Also, it takes time for a film to be loved so much. If the other films are good, they can take some time and they will also be loved the same way or in a different way but to the same leisure.

Of course, it matters. I would like all my films to be very big successes at every point. It wasn’t the case with JHMS. There were a lot of negative responses but I think sometimes, you meet with a lot of harshness and you’ve got to take it only to use it to make your future work better. I hope this will help me to make better films in the future.

How much of an influence was Jab We Met when you were shooting for Jab Harry Met Sejal? Not at all. Except for the title. Of course, the title suggests that it’s very similar. But it’s unlikely that suddenly after 10 years, JWM will influence if it has not influenced all the movies I did in between. Kareena Kapoor Khan was the highlight of the film and a lot of her lines from the movie are still quite popular. Why haven’t you worked with her after JWM? It’s not Kareena or me that are popular. It’s Geet Dhillon that’s popular. A lot of people asked me to make

Lata Mangeshkar Diamonds are forever L

ata Mangeshkar. Two words that encapsulate seven decades of music and a golden volumnious chapter in Hindi music. Lata has been an intrinsic part of the national consciousness just like, perhaps, the Taj Mahal. Her songs of love and loss, hope and happiness, strife and success, have helped generations heal and deal with a spectrum of intricate human emotions. Distilled and unblemished, her voice springing from the inner recesses of a consecrated artiste has made Lata the stuff of legends… A muse who enthused a hundred mentors and inspired a million melodies, she will continue to be heard so long as the sun and stars conform to the diktats of gravity. Lata’s tryst with music began when she was just five. As a teenager she turned breadwinner to a family that became a victim of misfortune. “This year in October, I complete 75 years in the film industry. My father (noted musician Dinanath Mangeshkar) passed away in April 1942 and in October the same year I started working,” she looks back. Young Lata began as an actor and Pahili Mangalagaur (1942) with Shahu Modak was her first film followed by Chimukla Sansar (1943) and Maajhe Baal (1944). “I was around 13-14. So I’d get roles of the hero’s or the heroine’s sister. But I didn’t like acting. Applying make-up, laughing and crying on order wasn’t something I enjoyed. I was happiest singing,” she smiles. And sing she did only to achieve a position nothing short of deification. After winning awards repeatedly for years, in 1969, she gracefully declined to accept them and asked establishments to no longer nominate her. Instead she urged them to encourage her peers and juniors. The last time Lata Mangeshkar sang for a Hindi film was in 2011 when she crooned Tere hasne se in the film Satrangee Parachute. At the age of 87, she’s not interested in playback anymore. “Today's songs are such that even if I’m approached to sing them I politely decline. I don’t know what to say about the lyrics. The dance numbers also go dhadaam dhadaam! But I won’t blame anyone. They are only catering to the present times,” she says softly. “But there have been melodious numbers too… like the songs in Border - Sandese aate hai... Also, Main Hoon Na. Shah Rukh Khan performed the title song so beautifully. Such music keeps my faith going,” says Lata whose songs in Veer-Zaara for the late

Madan Mohan in 2004 were mesmerising. Today’s the octogenarian is driven by a spiritual inclination. “In the past few years I’ve sung devotional songs on Mahadev, Krishna, Hanuman Chalisa, even ghazals. I enjoy singing stotras more than anything else today,’ shares she adding, “It’s my desire to record the Ram Raksha stotra. There are a lot of people in Maharashtra who recite Ram Raksha even today.” Her opting out from mainstream music hasn’t dulled her understanding of contemporary compositions. She believes the digital revolution has robbed individual artistes of long careers. She says, “The trend of producing records, cassettes or CDs is over. Music companies have opted to monetise online and through YouTube music sales. Only if a song does well, does the singer get opportunities or else he or she just fades away.” She adds, "Also, singers hold shows abroad for which they get paid well. But that’s just another way of making money. Identifying a film by its music and singers… well that doesn’t happen anymore. In an album full of tracks, a singer gets to sing just one or two songs.” She also doesn’t see too much merit in the music reality TV shows. “No one has a clue about what pure singing is. Children participate in shows and emerge winners. But where do they eventually reach? And who will take a little girl to sing a song for the lead heroine? A seven-eight year old boy won’t get to sing for the hero. The shows are just good for entertainment,” she opines. She misses her colleagues who contributed to Hindi cinema. “I miss the singers and composers who’re no more. There’s a dearth of poets. In fact, poetry has ceased to exist,” she laments. In the last 74 years she has sung for every actress right from Madhubala to Kajol. “I have sung for many actresses. Fortunately, my voice suited them all. But I believe my voice suited Nargis and Meena Kumari the most. Meena’s voice too was delicate. In recent times, I’d say my voice suited Kajol,” says Lata who belted out iconic numbers for Kajol in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. She shares an abiding affection for Jaya Bachchan. In fact, it’s said that for her role of a famous singer in Abhimaan, director Hrishikesh Mukherjee had asked Jaya to observe Lata and incorporate those nuances on screen. Lata remembers it like it was yesterday. “Jaya came

and sat in front of me while I was recording Piya bina. I felt conscious. But when I watched the movie, I saw Jaya had emulated me perfectly. The way I tend to pull my saree pallu over my shoulder seemed so real. She had got my mannerisms perfectly,” shares she. Lata also considers Waheeda Rehman as someone who aced lip synching. “I had sung for Waheeda Rehman in Guide. When you watched her on screen, it appeared if she was singing those songs. Her performance was so beautiful and real, the way her lips moved… she didn’t falter for a moment,” reflects Lata. The same applied to Dimple Kapadia in Lekin. “Lekin had classical songs. And though Dimple may not have studied classical music, her lips moved perfectly,” she says with admiration. She recalls her own learning experiences with humility. She says, “I was a Marathi speaking girl who didn’t have much clue about Hindi. But music directors like Naushad saab, Anil Biswas, Master Ghulam Haider, Khemchand Prakashji and others guided me. People like Shankar- Jaikishan made music from the heart. SD Burman would teach with so much love. He was like a father figure to me. He’d ask me to understand the meaning of the song first,” she shares. “Naushad saab would ask me to recite the song before I sang it to check my pronunciation. I’d write out the song and read it and re-read it out to him until he okayed it.” She adds, “Anil Biswas taught me how to breathe out without making an obvious sound, which could be captured by the mike. A lot depends on how you stand in front of the mike.” She cites a few spiritual influences in her great journey. “It’s the blessings of my parents and my Guru. God’s been kind to me. I was lucky to have learned from poet Pandit Narendra Sharma and Baba Varji Pendharkar from Kolhapur – who sent me a Dnyaneshwari early in my life. He also guided me telling me not to be afraid of singing in new languages. He’d predicted a bright future for me,” she shares. She still considers herself a student. That’s one of the main reasons why she didn’t take up a pupil. “I never believed I could teach someone. I didn’t even teach my family. My sisters Usha (Mangeshkar) and Meena (Mangeshkar) learnt music on their own,” she maintains.

That brings back memories of another food aficionado, the late Yash Chopra. “Yashji used to call me Didi. He’d tell me, I can never think of any other artiste except you.” She also enjoys a great rapport with the Bachchans – Amitabh and Jaya. “Bachchan saab and I share a good rapport but we don’t meet. We keep in touch on the phone; he writes to me about the things he’s doing.” She’s good friends with Pamela Chopra and Hema Malini as well. She adds, “Hema and I are in constant touch via WhatsApp. Even Dharam saab sends me interesting pictures sometimes.” She’s a travel junkie too. “I got to travel and explore thanks to the shows I did. I have done over 102 shows abroad. In India, most of my shows were held in Kolkata,” says Lata who after Hindi has sung the most number of songs in Bengali with music directors like Salil Chowdhary, Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar. “I have cut a record in Swahili too, an African language. I’ve sung in the Fijian language, in Russian and English too,” informs Lata who has sung in 36 languages. She even tried her hand at composing music, but never turned music director. She was put off by the rigmarole of composing tunes and having them approved by the director. “I don’t enjoy the tedious process. I’d recorded a few songs for Bhalji Pendharkar Baba’s Sadhi Manse (1965). They became popular especially Iranichya Deva tula. I used an actual bhata (an ironsmith’s tools) for lending authentic sound effects in the song featuring an ironsmith.” Just like her voice, her words are also golden… more so for aspiring singers. “Youngsters shouldn’believe that they can create magic just by holding a mike. Without training in classical music, whether Indian or Western, it’s useless. Knowing the taal and sur of the song is most important,” she gives the decree in her dulcet tone.

One of the most memorable moments of her career happened in 1963 when she sang the patriotic number Aye mere watan ke logo on account of Republic Day and left the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in tears. The track written by Kavi Pradeep and composed by C Ramchandra, commemorated the Indian soldiers who had died during the Indo-China War in 1962. “Around the time this song was sung, there was a lot of tension in the air. And listening to this song, Panditji had tears in his eyes. I never imagined this song would grow to be so popular. The credit goes to poet Pradeepji,” she says. “I believe this song shouldn’t be played on Republic Day as the occasion is celebratory. A song like Vande Matram would be more appropriate. But so far, every show I’ve done, this song has been the one most requested.” As a person too, her love for all things beautiful is wellknown. Be it diamonds, sarees or cuisine. In fact, her white sarees with coloured borders matching with the day of the week is the stuff of film lore. Fortunately, for Lata, she exercised no caution where food was concerned even during her heydays. “I used to eat icecream even before recording a song. I’d relish pickles, spicy food, green chillies… nothing affected me,” she laughs.

"After 'Judwaa 2', trade feels your are a bit ahead in the race right now... There is no race. There is 'Race 3' which Remo D'Souza is directing with Salman Khan while will be very cool but there is no race between any of us. If there is a race, then what is the finish line? How is there ever a finish line? "As artistes, we are just working towards entertaining people and making good films and hopefully, we will get to make a career. I feel amazing about being able to do that and provide for my family and my loved ones. But I am not working so I can be better than someone," Varun wrote on Twitter. ctress Kalki Koechlin said she is least bothered about whether she "fits in" Bollywood as she is highly passionate about the creative process of a film. Asked if she feels that she has "fit in" in Bollywood, Kalki said in an interview, "I think I find my place in Indian cinema. But if you have asked me about such a thing, I don't know if I fit in... or I am a misfit because I am not concerned.

Kalki Koechlin: Don't know if I fit in 'Bollywood'

"I am not bothered about how many parties I attend or the number of invitations coming in. I work and that is something I am passionate about. It's my indulgence in characters that will drive me to do a lot of homework, and a story that will intrigue me to the core." 'Dev D', 'That Girl in Yellow Boots', 'Margarita with a Straw' and 'A Death in the Gunj' are some of the unusual films that Kalki has done. What sets Kalki apart is also how she openly praises other actresses. When Kalki's 'Waiting' had a clash with Radhika Apte's 'Phobia', she was generous in lauding the latter's work. "Yes, because I find talent sexy. If you have watched that film, you know the whole film was based on nothing but her performance. Then why not? She is a brilliant actress. You know every Friday, so many films are releasing, but not all the film create an impact in your mind. So I get excited to see good cinema. I thank people who are creating good cinema."

Film industry speaks up on national anthem issue playing of the national anthem in public places, including cinema halls Javed Akhtar: Sangeet Som's ignorance of history really monumental The wording of a November 2016 order on the issue might be modified so that cinema halls "may" instead of "shall" - play the national anthem before the start of movies. This sparked a debate, leading film fraternity members like Kamal Haasan, Javed Akhtar and Raj Nayak, to express their opinion. Here's what they had tweeted: Javed Akhtar:

anyone's patriotism by making it mandatory for cinema halls to play the national anthem, say film fraternity members who feel respect for the 'Jana gana mana' should be natural. The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Center to take a call on the

Something is seriously wrong with those Indians who don't get touched and don't feel any reverence when they hear the national anthem. It really pains me that some people are trying to undermine the dignity of our national anthem.

JAVED AKHTAR: Some thing is seriously wrong with those Indians who don’t get touched and don’t feel any reverence when they hear the the national anthem

KAMAL HAASAN: Singapore plays its national anthem every midnight. Likewise, do so on DD. Do not force or test my patriotism at various random places.

ARVIND SWAMI: I will always stand up for our national anthem and sing along, which I do with great pride. Never understood why it was mandatory and cinema halls only.

ADNAN SAMI: Hey, it's the national anthem; GET UP... PERIOD! Go argue about something else! 'Where' the national anthem should play is another matter; but whenever or wherever it is played, get up and respect it. From the heart -- Not sleeve!

VIVEK AGNIHOTRI: If I remember correctly, in the 1970s and even in the 1980s, national anthem played at the end of the movie and everyone stood without questioning it. Today, we question everything even if it's not disputable.

ANANTH MAHADEVAN: The 60s: All stood respectfully for the national anthem played after the movie. No discussion. Today: everything has to be an issue!

RAJ NAYAK: Before this order, I used to find people willingly standing up for the national anthem and sing

RAGHU RAM: I stand up for the national anthem because I give it the love and respect that it is due. Not because some government forces me to.

Sharmila Tagore: Today's heroines have better chance in Bollywd D

uring our times it was nothing better than a good cry. We had to all look helpless... so, I think these people (heroines today) are having much more fun...," Sharmila said when asked if she sees any difference between the actresses then and now. Sharmila, 72, said that the life of a heroine during her time was not exciting. "Heroines (then) couldn't be bad, so Helen had all the fun... heroine's life wasn't all that exciting... today's heroines have much better chance," she added The "Amar Prem" actress says maintaining a continuity then was difficult. "Also, we were working in three or four films at a time. So, maintaining a continuity was difficult because today Aamir Khan can put on and lose weight... we couldn't do all that," she said. Talking about the films she likes the most out of those she starred in, Sharmila said: "I like 'Safar' and ‘Mausam'. People really like 'Amar Prem' and 'Aradhana'. The shelf life of these films is still there... but my favourite is 'Safar' and 'Mausam'.” In her over five decade journey in Hindi filmdom, Sharmila has starred in films like "Aradhana", "Kashmir Ki Kali", "Aa Gale Lag Jaa" and "An Evening In Paris".

About her favourite co-star, she said: " I liked Shashi (Kapoor) very much. He's a friend. Of course, with Rajesh Khannaji I gave several hits, and Dharmendra.” Sharmila, who made her Bollywood debut in 1959, on Tuesday was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Siri Fort Auditorium. 12 Tricks to Drop Up to 5 Pounds in a Week

1. Drink Mainly Water

DAY

A sports or energy drink, fruit smoothie, or light beer — each serving contains about 100 calories. Yet these beverages don't satisfy you the way 100 calories of food does, so they're a waste. Other liquids may be high in sodium and carbohydrates, which trick your body into retaining water, puffing you out.

These gym-class staples will help sculpt muscle, so you'll sport a more streamlined appearance. Do three sets of 12 of each exercise every other day. "Push-ups target your upper body, while lunges work your butt, hips, and thighs," says Larkin. Quick tip: Make sure your back and legs remain in a straight line during your push-ups; it'll improve muscle tone. Also, you can build even more muscle with the lunges if you hold free weights in each hand while doing them.

Water, on the other hand, has zero calories and carbs and little to no sodium, making it the perfect slimdown drink. And, strangely, it actually helps flush out excess water weight as well as jumpstart your metabolism. If water is too boring, add lemon wedges or mint leaves using an infuser. 2. Swap Refined Carbs for Veggies The simple carbs in white rice, spaghetti, and sandwich rolls can "wreak havoc on your weight because they're digested very quickly, leaving you hungry and more likely to overeat later,” Instead of replacing these foods with healthier wholegrain bread products, which contain filling fibers that can sometimes trigger bloating, sub in vegetables for the week: Instead of rice, try cauliflower "rice" made by grating cauliflower. Instead of chips and dip, go for carrots and dip. The complex carbs from these vegetables are digested more slowly than simple carbs , so you'll remain full longer. And because veggies are mostly water, they also help flush out excess water weight. 3. Do Cardio 30 Minutes a Day Any workout that gets your heart rate up will burn calories. But you'll use more calories if you pick a cardio routine that engages multiple muscles simultaneously, says Wendy Larkin, personal-training manager at Crunch's Polk Street gym, in San Francisco. Three to consider: spinning, cardio kickboxing, and boot-camp workouts. Half an hour of each torches 200 to 300 calories while toning up your arms, legs, and core so everything appears sleeker and tighter.

7. Sleep 30 Minutes More a Night That extra half an hour, whether you sleep 5 hours or 8, can refresh you enough that you will make better food choices (in other words, no quick sugar fix for breakfast in search of energy) and won't feel lethargic and skip the gym, says registered dietician Esther Blum, author of Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous. More restful sleep (7 to 8 hours is best) also boosts your metabolism. And because your body builds muscle while you snooze, getting zzz's equals better muscle tone. 8. Make One Food Sacrifice Cutting out one indulgence — such as the chips you have with lunch or the chocolate dessert you eat after dinner — can subtract a few hundred calories from your diet, which translates into less flab, says Blum. "Your body won't even notice their absence." 9. Eat Salmon It's packed with nutrients that build muscle tone and give your skin a healthy glow. Some nutritionists claim that consuming a portion (doesn't matter how it's cooked) may immediately make your face look a bit more contoured. 10. Pop an Anti-Gas Pill Take one of these chewable tablets, sold over the counter at drugstores, to relieve bloating in your abdomen and to break up gas bubbles in your digestive tract, leaving you with a flatter tummy. 18-Count Chewable Antigas Tablets, GAS-X, $13.06 (Available on Amazon)

You'll burn even more calories per session if your workout incorporates interval training: alternating short bursts of intense cardio with slower activity. Experts aren't sure why it works, but trainers swear by it.

11. Stand Up Straight

4. Drink Coffee an Hour Before Working Out

12. Do Squats and Sit-Ups

This is the one exception to the stick-to-water-only rule: Just as a coffee run makes your morning at work more productive, a pre-exercise cup of java with a splash of skim milk (about 11 calories) or black (just 5 calories) will energize your workout, explains Dr. Klauer. "You'll burn more calories without realizing you're pushing yourself harder."

Bodybuilders use this technique before competitions, because it adds definition to muscle. Do three sets of 12 of each exercise to tighten your abs, butt, and legs temporarily.

Keeping your spine rigid and your shoulders back while sucking in your belly toward your spine gives you a slimmer, more streamlined middle.

6. DO 36 PUSH-UPS AND LUNGES EVERY OTHER Nov 2017 | Global Movie

Sushant Singh Rajput Loses 7 Kilos To Get The Lean Look For 'Drive’ W

ith his Bollywood outings edging on romance and biographies, Sushant Singh Rajput has infrequently given his fans a glimpse into his physical prowess. Now, Rajput's Instagram posts boast of an enhanced fitness level, which makes reports of him losing seven kilos for his next baffling.

Singh recently jetted off to Israel to film a song for Tarun Mansukhani's Drive, also starring Jacqueline Fernandez. The actor plays a racer. Singh was put on a strict diet to "get into shape" for his part, a source tells mid-day. "Given his previous commitments, Sushant had little time to prepare for this song until he arrived in Israel. He had to sport a lean look, and lose seven kilos within three months. His trainer, Yeshu Talari, travelled with him so that his fitness regimen was on

track. He also put him on a ketogenic diet for 15 days.” Highlighting the principles of the diet, Talari says, "Keto is a diet high on protein and fat, and devoid of carbs. The reduction in carbs puts the body into a metabolic state, called ketosis. We followed this regimen for a fortnight, and subsequently switched Sushant to a low carb diet. He consumed protein every three hours.” A typical day for the actor commenced with an hour of cardiovascular training, before he began shooting for the rest of the day. Given that racers can lose as much as three kilos in a single race, the shrivelled look was essential for the part. "We conducted a mix of functional training, CrossFit, weight training and TRX " Talari said

Govt Sees CBFC As Facilitator For Filmmakers: Smriti Irani

nion minister Smriti Irani yesterday said the government views agencies like the censor board "as facilitators" within the ambit of law. She also said she never spoke about former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Pahlaj Nihalani because irrespective of the kind of cinema he makes, he is a senior member of the film fraternity.

U

In a candid conversation with Johar, Irani touched upon the subject of nepotism surrounding the director. "I will say this as an actor, you (Johar) are in the news for the wrong reasons of late nepotism and all," she said. Recalling her past experience with him as an actor, the minister said that Johar sees everyone with respect.

The government recently replaced Nihalani with songwriter Prasoon Joshi as the censor board chief. Since his appointment as the head of CBFC in January 2015, Nihalani had made headlines for a number of controversial moves and statements. "We have had an unwritten rule, that irrespective of their kind of work we have always given respect to people who are senior or chronologically older than us...," Irani said in conversation with filmmaker Karan Johar at the India Economic Summit here.

"I have seen you as a filmmaker even when I was a nobody. I had a huge amount of respect for you because you treated every person who walked up to you with dignity irrespective of whom their parents were, and I think that is what we need to set right about the industry, that the industry is not about nepotism, we are about talent.

"I have never spoken about Mr Nihalani in public and I have chosen not to do so because irrespective of the kind of cinema he makes, he has a seniority," the Information & Broadcasting minister said. "The only issue is that the government foresees an agency (CBFC) to be a facilitator within the ambit of law and that is all that we are interested in," she added. Besides, sharing his experiences and problems faced as a filmmaker, Johar said, "When the crisis happened during 'My Name is Khan' it is something that I will never forget. Mr (Narendra) Modi was CM (chief minister) of Gujarat at that time. "I called him because the problem was penetrating to Gujarat from Maharashtra. We got in touch with him and in 10 minutes the problem was sorted and that gives us as an industry a lot of hope".

"It is the Shah Rukh Khans that actually tell the world that we are about talent. It is about people like Ekta (Kapoor). I have seen scores of people line up from villages at her doorstep... that is what we are about, that is what you (Karan) are about also but you don't tell anybody that. You like to take some very serious fights out in the open". Asked about the protests in Rajasthan against Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus "Padmavati", the minister told Johar: "I am absolutely sure that the law and order situation will be under control there and state government will ensure that there are no miscreants to disrupt any kind of interaction or discipline and I will also say this that we have a very watchful media so be rest assured

Shah Rukh Khan: Not Competing With Akshay Or Salman T

ed Talks, which has been a rage on the Internet, is coming to India in the form of a television show. It's only fitting that the show, which aims to give a platform to innovative ideas and success stories, will be hosted by one of India's biggest success stories - Shah Rukh Khan. On why the concept has been redesigned to suit the model of a TV show, the actor says, "It may seem that we are going the old route by picking the med-ium of television. But this is the first time that TED Talks is happening in Hindi. The language will [help us] cater to a huge audience.” With Khan coming back as a host after his stints in Kaun Banega Crorepati and Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain, comparisons with his peers – especially Salman Khan (Bigg Boss) and Akshay Kumar (The Great Indian Laughter Challenge) are inevitable. “I'm not competing with them. They are in a league of their own. This show has a very different sensibility. It is meant to inspire people. We are not restricted by TRPs and ratings.” Describing it as a show "that's closest to my heart", Khan says it is the sheer idea that encouraged him to come on board. "I've not charged as much as most actors do," he smiles, before adding, "Money has never kept me going. With the grace of God, I'm well to do. I've never really done anything for money." The superstar, who is known for his eloquence, has also been approached to write and contribute for the TED Talks book. "It is a huge honour because this is so creatively satisfying. Of all the things I have done in my life, this show makes me feel alive.

t A time when several Bollywood stars are making a switch to television with reality shows, Tabu says if she ever turns to the small screen, she would like to start her journey with a travel show. The actor says, "As far as the small screen is concerned, I would love to do a travel show. I wanted to be an air hostess because I wanted to see the world. Now I want to do a travel show as I would love to visit different places. I have not been to South America, Australia and East Africa. Riding high on the success of Golmaal Again, Tabu say she has been offered reality shows in the past, but nothing excited her. "There have been talks in the past, people have tried to convince me to be in this space, but I did not find it interesting enough. Tabu would also love to judge a reality show. "I think it would be a nice relief for me to judge. I like to wear good clothes and enjoy people performing in front of me and be in the director's shoes almost, as I am not performing. I love to watch people dance, it is the most fantastic skill and art form that anybody can have.

Brazil – My Passion (india And Brazil – Home Within A Home) By-Carlyta Mouhini ( Maria )

Being from an Indo Brazilian origin and as a resident of Mumbai, I was absolutely thrilled when the editor of 'Opinion Express' told me to write an article on delectable country Brazil from my own perception as I lived there for a considerable time in Rio and hence to guide the readers of the absolute 'Virginal Brazil' to the Indians and the world The journey beginning with Rio–De –Janeiro …. A background brief on Rio - The site of Rio de Janeiro was founded by Portuguese explorers as they entered Guanabara Bay on the first of January, 1502. Since the bay was considered the mouth of a river, the city was named in honour of the day, Rio de Janeiro, or River of January. French traders also settled in the Guanabara Bay area, in an attempt to gain an economic and strategic foothold in Brazil. After two years of battles (1565-67), the French were expelled and the site of Rio was moved up onto a hill, later known as Castle Hill, for protection from further invasions. Rio grew on the exporting of sugar cane, grown on the surrounding plains. Eventually gold and diamonds were found in the Mines Gerais area. Many Europeans moved here after this discovery and in 1763 the capital was moved from Salvador to Rio, further increasing its prominence. The present day city of Rio sits within the long shadow of one of the world's newest seven wonders. My soul will always remain attached to 'MtCorcovado'. As suddenly you will feel that you have all the air in the world around you and all for yourself, but... you can't breathe it! The Corcovado and the statue of Christ the Redeemer (in Portuguese Christo Redentor) that sits on top of it, is certainly the most important monument. The statue is a magnificent example of Art Deco sculpture. It was completed in 1931, 9 years late as it was supposed to be built in 1922 in honour of Brazil's 100th year of independence. The statue stands 38 meters high and looks out eastward towards Sugar Loaf Mountain. It was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa, a Rio engineer and sculpted by Paul Landowski, a Polish-French sculptor out of reinforced concrete with soapstone layers covering it. . With his unblinking eyes and his all-encompassing outstretched arms, Cristo the Redeemer welcomes all to the city he overlooks. In Rio, Cristo is everywhere you look, your eyes will instantly be drawn to his high dwelling presence above and you will find you are mesmerized by him...even if you happen to be a Jew, Muslim, or Atheist. Because this particular Cristo pays no mind to your religious views...rather he offers majestic, panoramic views of of one of the most magnificent cities in the world for all those who will heed his call. The views from Christ the Redeemer are well...quite frankly there isn't anything that can be written that can properly describe the deep purple ocean spilling up against the curvaceous coastline with oval shaped mountains rising high into the sky...so why even bother? But I will say this be sure to go on a sunny day...if you don't you may end up feeling like

your head is in the clouds...quite literally. Cloudy days often mean you views of Rio will be views of a milky white mist. So check the ten day weather before planning your visit. Speaking of which heeding his call consists of many options including tour groups, taxis, or buses all of which end up at the train station. But the reward of ascending up to bask in his presence does have a cost $36 real to be exact, for a round-trip ticket that will take you to the stairway to heaven....220 steps to be exact. And for those who don't feel like putting in the effort there is an elevator as well. But do yourself a favour (unless you're in a wheelchair) and take the steps to the top and know this, once you get to the top you will have your reward. For those who are on a budget take the 584 bus which runs through almost all the tourist areas and deposits you right at the train station for a mere $2 real. It's the best deal in town! I have visited the Corcovado (means hunchback) many a times coz of its magnetism that also included Sugar Loaf Mountain (and getting stuck in traffic jams so you have been warned!). The tour included the price of going up to the statue at the top of the 710 metre by

very crowded up there when you take pictures so be prepared to elbow some grandmothers.

way of a rack railway that takes you along the edge of Rio's stunning Tijuca Forest. I visited the monument in the late afternoon, just before sunset. It was very crowded and it was hard to manoeuvre around the base of the statue. Still the views were stunning. You can see all Re De Janiero from here, including the famed Copacabana and Ipenema beaches and the world-famous Maracana football stadium where the World Cup football (WCF) 2014 was held. The mountain is located in a very safe area of Rio, all surrounded by Military Schools and Fortress which reminds a little bit of West Point in the States, right next to the Pão de Açucar you can see the cute Vermelha Beach where the Portuguese first set foot in 1503 and a very green and magnificent trail which provides a great surprise in your day called PISTA CLAUDIO COUTINHO! The Christ the Redeemer is subject to regular restorations and more minor maintenance work. As you can imagine standing on top of an exposed hill in a polluted city, the statue is subject a great deal of environmental hazards. It must be quite an effort to keep it as white as it is. If you are going on your own, the cost of your visit is R$36.00. It is open daily from 8:30am to 8pm. It is usually very busy here with tourists buying all kinds of souvenirs in the overpriced shops. One can get there via taxi but there is a bus 583 and the subway. Don't forget to take pictures of the city from this great vantage point. There are many ways of getting up there but i would recommend taking the little train as that takes you through some really nice nature on the way up the mountain and you have some great views from the train too. Cab ride with tip from Ipanema Beach to Corcovado is $15.50 Reals = $5.82 US dollars ( 1 Dollar is 60 INR ) The cab driver might ask you if you want to be driven up to Christ and then he will wait for you, and then drive you back. This might be a good idea since the lines for the trains are very long. We did not do this only because we didn't want to make the poor guy wait for us, hoping that we will come back to pay him. We also wanted to take all the time we needed taking pictures for my friends who were touring Rio from across the Globe.

A personal experience I would like to share with my readers ….We were offered a tour to take us here and Sugar Loaf for 210 Real but as it turns out we were pleased we headed here on our own by taxi . It was so easy to do and gave us the time we wanted to explore. We also saved a bundle! We flagged a taxi and it took us 30 minutes in traffic and 28 real to get there. The driver offered to wait (saying he would turn off the meter. There are lots of taxis so this is not necessary .The train was running so we were taken to the top by a shuttle bus .The entrance fee is 17Real.At the stop are 200 steps or an elevator to take you to the top .We opted for the later and it was better !! By the way the cab driver didn't turn off the meter...see how that unfolded in my Sugar Loaf Tip! The roads leading to the sculpture are closed according to the Brazilian Environment Ministry. Landslides, rock fall, dampened trees obstruct the traffic. A never experienced Rainfall, because of which almost 250 men died, has hit the Brazilian metropolis. Admission fee: adults R$30.00, children 6-12 R$15.00, and for children under 5 free. One of the leading highlights of Rio are its beaches, such as Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and so many others and Guanabara bay along with Rio of the Samba, the Caipirinhas, the Cariocas ( local boys /beach boys) ,The Carnival, the Bossa nova ( latin rhythm ) , The girl from Ipanema( famous Jazz song ) and many other things that we could see in this fantastic place! Even a little walk, you can have a great idea of the Carioca way of life!I'm not a Carioca, I was born in Nteroi (which I like very much) 70 miles away fm Rio connected by world's spectacular bridge overlooking the Rio coastline, but I have a special passion because Rio is always beautiful and Rio is something that you must see it for yourself! The Bay Area covers the most populated areas of Rio and the Ocean holds the well off part of the population in a way. Sure that neighbourhoods like elite Botafogo ( where we have our resident ) , Flamengo or Laranjeiras (traditional districts of Rio) can be found there but you can also find the city centre, the port of Rio and many industrial areas around the Bay, on the other hand the best neighbourhoods of Rio and also the most touristy spots can be find around the Ocean like Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon or Gavea and Jardim Botanico, and if you continue following the ocean you can also head to

Tickets on the train that takes you to Big J is $30 reals a person = $11.26 a person Tickets are timed, so if there is a big queue you might have to wait a half hour or more before hopping into the train. The clouds might clear like it did for us. It is Nov 2017 | Global Movie

have to actually live or visit consistently a place to really know it and its people. And contrary to popular belief, the people of the favela see no money from these tours. If anyone sees the money it's the drug lord. Why don't you guys just hand your purses directly to them? Now I'll get off my soap box :-) SAMBA N CARNIVAL……………..

the west part of the city where the famous Barra da Tijuca is located. A day at the Sugar Loaf, here, it is named PÃO DE AÇUCAR, will be the best option for you to understand the city, you will also notice that it is the landmark which starts the entrance of Guanabara Bay, and you can see on the other edge the so beautiful Holy Cross Fortress in Niteroi which is another city of the State, and also the second most important city of Rio de Janeiro. Favela (Indian counterpart of 'Dharavi' in Mumbai)Reality facts Favelas are a fact of life here. Many Cariocas realize the difficult conditions that people who live in favelas have to face. Along with that it is understood that the great majority of those people are good people. A favela is a place with drug lords, crime, and chaos but it is also a home to many people. Keep that in mind. When you go on you are' 'Favela Tour' keep in mind that these are real people living their day to day life. A favela is not a zoo for people from first world countries to quickly drive through so they can say they've been there. You

Brazil is usually thought of as the country as the most exuberant and exciting carnival celebrations. The celebration originated in the Catholic countries of Europe as a party before the coming of Lent – the forty days Christ spent in the wilderness. It was traditional for the celebrations to end on Ash Wednesday when people then respected the period of abstinence for forty days. The term 'carnival' is thought to have originated from the Latin 'carne levare', meaning 'to remove meat', as eating meat would have been prohibited during Lent. Nowadays carnival is not seen as a religious celebration but more of a street party with lots of music and dancing. The annual carnival celebrations take place between the Saturday and the Tuesday that precede AshWednesday. The most famous Brazilian carnivals are held in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. In fact, the Guinness Book of Records maintains that the Salvador carnival is the biggest street party in the world! The most important events of carnival in Rio, and probably of all Brazilian carnivals, are the samba parades. All samba parades have a theme and a storyline, performed by a samba school known as Sambadrome' .The preparations for the samba school competitions begin many months before the event as elaborate costumes are designed and produced over a period of months while decorated floats are constructed to participate in the carnival parade. ( An exact précis which I gathered from Reverend Fr.Savio in our Good Shepherd Church- 4 Bunglows -Mumbai when I went for the recently concluded Easter Sunday Mass ) Food Outlet in Copa Cabana (Cup and Saucer) – My favourite eatery outlet and always recommended) All over Brazil the staple food is meat dish oriented, sea food, brown rice, black beans and of course 'pao' (bread) But If you want to try a real Brazilian Barbecue (Churrascaria – meat dish) then you must try 'Sol de Marius' which boast of an admirable spread of delicious sea food, varied meat steaks and culinary and of course the all famous Copa Cabana Salads but not to forget the the lip smacking desserts!. You pay a set price and then the waiters come around with various types of meats on skewers/swords that they serve by cutting it from the skewer. There is also a big salad bar

which is nice but don't fill up on it. When you are done eating you flip the disk in front of you over to the red side so the waiters know to stop bringing you food.

you could want can be found on the beaches and for a great price. The best places for paintings or art work can be found across from the surfers at Ipanema on the boardwalk. Great stuff!

Sol De Marius is a bit pricier than most restaurants in Rio but it is worth a visit if you want to experience a real 'Brazilian Churrascaria'! The price; however tends to go a bit on the higher side - R$650 for three people! That's three seafood flat rates at R$175 per person, one Caipirinha (Brazil's local brew), two beers, one glass of wine and three aperitifs (starters) ! It's always preferable to try the innumerable normal 'steak houses' in Brazil along the beach strips if the 'tourist pocket' wants to remain economical and affordable

On the outskirt of Rio there is 'Rio Sul' which is a shopping mall that will take care of your every Brazilian made fashion need. If I had a full day to spend there, I'd come out with a hundred bags, and almost all of them would be full of shoes. The clothes are great too. Foreigners will go wild for the prices, which are about half what you'd pay for comparable goods at home. This is high-quality stuff, for the most part, all Brazilian-made and all fabulous. It is a shopping mall on the outskirts of Rio but easily reachable on subway. Reach the Estacio station and change from Line One to Line Two and get off at Del Castilho station. The station has a pedestrian flyover that goes straight into the mall. The mall is big and has many stores, Brazilian and international brands which are cheaper than usual.

WHERE TO SHOP ‌‌ Rio has many recommendable shops in the form of regular street market located under the large highway overpass, which protects most of the vendors from the hot sun as well as the hard rain.Weekends are alive than the weekdays with lots of vendors and shoppers. There are lots of old antique items, old coins and various collectors' treasures, clothes, food, etc. There are lots of 'Cariocas' so do mind your valuables and watch for pickpockets! (Similar to La India) Rio DeJaneiro has considerable rows of tourist shops too. Most of the typical gear you would like to buy for friends and family can be purchased at the beach in Cocacabana or Ipanema. Items include beach towels, swimsuits, soccer jerseys etc. Just about everything

Hippie Fair or Flea market ( the kinds you would find in Goa ) is an outdoor flea market every Sunday (during daylight) where tourists can buy all kinds of things where one can buy t-shirts, jewellery, handicrafts, belt, purse, suitcase, local paintings, musical instruments, Yes, you can bargain with the vendors to negotiate a lower price. Most of them do not speak English and I derived that there may be a huge 'problem 'with tourist Nov 2017 | Global Movie

Ten Most Popular Shooting Locations of Bollywood The Indian film industry has its audience spread all across the globe. Thousands of films make it up to the silver screen every year and the size of audience watching these films is just infinite. Bollywood is, therefore, one of the best mediums for promoting tourism in India. The stupendous topography of India makes it a charismatic location for shooting films. There are a lot many picturesque locations in India and films play a major role in making the people aware of these locations.Shooting in India is not only way more convenient than the foreign locations but is also quite budget-friendly.

Diversified locations like hill stations, deserts, beaches, monuments, rural areas, forts and palaces etc. are easily accessible in India. In the last few years, the Indian film makers have largely resorted to the Indian landscapes for filming their projects. So if you have been wondering as to where exactly are these super-attractive locations hidden, don’t be surprised to hear that this is your own country! Still wondering? Let me make it easy for you by jotting down the names of the places that have lent a helping hand in the making of a number of movies. So here I begin:

1. MANALI When Kareena Kapoor joyfuly sang “Yeh Ishq Hai, Jannat Dikhaye” amidst the snow-clad mountains, she was actually referring to this heaven of Himachal Pradesh. Remember the narrow roads covered with snow on the sides, the picturesque valleys and the beautiful cottages shown in Jab We Met? Well, these are all the charms of a beautiful hill station called Manali!

2. RAJASTHAN Rajasthan is probably the place where the maximum number of shootings have taken place. And that includes Hollywood movies as well. This royal retreat offers spectacular palatial beauty along with the serenity of the lakes. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Jodha Akbar, Yaadein, Border, Dor etc. are just a few of the hits which have been pictured in Rajasthan.

3. DELHI The capital does not lag behind in being the location of interest for the Indian film-makers. The historical monuments, markets, Delhi University and the city life of Delhi have always been a photographer’s delight. Some of the most popular films shot in Delhi include Rockstar, Fanaa, Jannat 2, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, 2 States etc.

4. GOA Needless to say, Goa is the second most captured location in India! It is that beach paradise which has attracted film makers from all over the world. Ironically, the state has lesser locals and more of the tourists! Some of the movies promoting the celestial beauty of Goa are Dil Chahta Hai, Josh, Ek Villain, Golmaal 3, Finding Fanny and Singham.

5. KASHMIR Who wouldn’t want to capture the heavenly beauty of Kashmir in the lens? Words fall short even if you try to describe the magnanimous charm that this place mesmerizes the visitors with! Kashmir is the most beautiful location for adding romance to a film! Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Highway, Rockstar have recently chanced upon the beauty of this state.

6. KERALA When it comes to beauty, the south is no less than the north. If north has the snow-clad peaks, the south has spectacular waterfalls as nature’s bounty. Remember the gigantic waterfall Aishwarya Rai falls from in Raavan? And the song called Barso re Megha from Guru? It is the magnificent beauty of Kerala which has been screened in these films.

7. LEH/LADAKH Leh/Ladakh was earlier considered to be an inaccessible region because of the extreme climatic conditions. But not anymore! Thanks to the film-makers, these locations have now become popular especially amongst the youngsters. While in 3 Idiots Aamir Khan was found teaching at Ladakh, the latest flick Fugly showed the youngsters taking a road trip to Leh. Other movies filmed in these regions include Lakshya, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Dil Se and Paap.

8. KOLKATA Two popular Gunday of Bollywood were born in this city! You probably would have guessed it by now that it is the Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor starrer Gunday that chose Kolkata as its prime location. Other major films shot here are Barfi, Kahaani and Parineeta.

9. MUMBAI Mumbai is the home to the largest film industry of India. The first shot of camera would have begun from this city itself. A lot many films have been shot at this entertainment capital of India. Munnabhai MBBS, Slumdog Millionaire, Dhoom, Saagar, Talaash, Ek Deewana Tha and there is no end to this list!

10. AMRITSAR This small yet divine city of Punjab has also contributed in making our films look astonishingly picturesque. The busy lanes of the city, the Golden Temple, the Jallianwala Bagh and the Khalsa College are favourite shooting spots for the directors. Movies which have been filmed at these locations are Gadar, Bride and Prejudice, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Veer-Zara and Legend of Bhagat Singh to name a few. Nov 2017 | Global Movie

Penelope Cruz Hates Being Questioned About Age A

ctor Penelope Cruz has said she is sick and tired of being asked questions about ageing. The 43-year-old star said she no longer entertains questions on the topic because she believes journalists tend to take it too far, reported Interview magazine. "Journalists have been asking me, since I was, like, 22, 'Are you afraid of ageing?' That is such a crazy question for a 22-year-old girl or, for that matter, for a 42-year-old. I combat that craziness by refusing to answer the question. "When it comes to talking about ageing as an actress, I feel like, 'What the f**k? I'm not going to give you even two minutes to honour your question. It doesn't deserve that'," Cruz told Gwyneth Paltrow. The Oscar-winning actor said her views on the topic took a turn after the birth of her daughter, Luna (now four). "Something changed when I gave birth to my daughter. I started thinking, 'Come on, it's 2017. Why do women still have to be talking about this? It's crazy.' That sense only got bigger when I had children," she said. Cruz also has a six-year-old son, Leo with actor husband Javier Bardem.
