hat’s not all during the same course of the interview we quizzed the Tubelight hero what does he love? His response is what his fans would completely understand just like we did. Salman said, “Salman Khan loves loyalty, nothing better than loyalty.” Looks like the actor with this statement has just confirmed rumours of him dating Romanian beauty Iulia Vantur. In this interview Salman also reminisced his good old days with buddy Shah Rukh Khan. The two stars had not talked to each other because of a cold war, however when Salman spoke of SRK this time around one thing was clear that their friendship is built on a pretty strong foundation. Salman also revealed that he had pics of Shah Rukh and him dancing at a concert on his phone, sweet right? Salman’s Tubelight featuring brother Sohail Khan and Chinese actress Zhu Zhu is all set to release on June 23. This is the third time that Salman has collaborated with Kabir Khan for a film. Their last two outings on screen, Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan spelt success. This film will also reunite Salman and Shah Rukh Khan after almost a decade. Well, we simply cannot wait for Tubelight’s release.

his is by far the most endearing interview of Salman Khan as he opens up about Tubelight, relationships, his equation with Shah Rukh Khan and more.... It was quite the mindset that this superstar was in when I met him in the middle of the promotions for his next, Tubelight. Salman Khan is a man with many adjectives, to some he’s ‘bhai’, to others he’s simply ‘Salman’. Those close to him call him ‘SK’, others in their professional capacity address him as ‘Salman sir’. Despite all these name tags and larger than life intros, Salman is a basic guy. For anyone who has managed to get into his inner circle or access his man-child banter can tell that the actor is simplicity personified. In an age of gadget and gizmos, Salman still likes to clutch onto his creased out Blackberry and make a phone call rather than sit and send long text messages. That doesn’t mean he’s not aware of the changing times and has readily embraced social media in his own style by his sometime cryptic tweets. What isn’t cryptic or a mystery is he is pretty much the real deal. During my chat with Salman, I watched his eyes light up the minute I spoke about how despite the misgivings and predictions, his films (last few years) are a step forward towards taking baby steps in the journey to bring in some positive reform in the society and also paint a larger than life almost messiah like image of a man willing to go to any extent to make good triumph over evil. Even while talking about the message associated with Tubelight, Salman had this beautiful thought to share as he said, “Imagine what the connect is going to be with people who have brothers when they see brothers’ separation, it just hurts. And even if brothers are not getting along, this film will do one thing is that – “What’s the fight all about?” They would pick up the phone and they would call their brothers and say, “Let’s Chill, forget the past and start off fresh”. This is something that I hope it does for all the brothers who have got some differences or not talking, I hope this happens with them after seeing this movie.”

It’s about an old man who has grey hair, daughters and no romance… A story about a family and wrestling. “It’s not a conventional kind of a film. Who knew it would do this kind of business?” asked Aamir Khan. Aamir Khan‘s filmography boasts of blockbusters like “Lagaan“, “Rang De Basanti” and “Dangal“. The credit, he says, goes to his heart, which he religiously follows while signing on the dotted line. Since the 1980s, the 52-year-old has been fitting seamlessly between characters like a cab driver, a clown thief or a funloving college student. Asked about his favourite film, Aamir told IANS over phone from Malta: “All the films that I have done are very close to me and I don’t measure my films based on their business.” But one can’t overlook the massive success of his film “Dangal” that has surpassed the Rs 1,000 crore-mark of box office collections in China – the first Indian film to achieve the feat. “‘Taare Zameen Par’ is as close to me as ‘Dangal’. So are ‘PK’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Lagaan’. I can’t differentiate between any one of them. All are equally important to me,” he said. Since “Dangal”, which narrates the story of the real life wrestlers and sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat, broke several records at the box office, is he feeling the pressure to do better? “No. I don’t feel that kind of pressure. I follow my heart as far as creative decisions go… As to what I am going to do next. It’s never affected by the success of my

previous films,” he said. “My choice of films is dictated by my emotional interest in the story and my creative interest,” added the actor, who is shooting for Vijay Krishna Acharya’s “Thugs of Hindostan” in Malta. It will bring him together with megastar Amitabh Bachchan on the big screen for the first time. “I am most excited to work with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time. It is a dream come true. I’ve always been his huge fan,” said Aamir. He is equally excited about his other project, “Secret Superstar”. “My next film is ‘Secret Superstar’. It’s about a 14-year-old girl. She is the central character. I love the story. It’s a beautiful story,” he said about the film that traces the journey of an aspiring singer named Insia. “Will it do the same kind of business like ‘Dangal’? I have no idea. I belive in Raabta (connection) – Kriti Sanon A rare combination of heart, head and humility, Kriti Sanon is both beautiful and sensitive. Her IQ is rivalled by her EQ as she’s imbibed the best of both her engineering background and her artistic vocation. She’s barely a few films old, but her fan following and her star value overshadow her experience. She knows better than to get swayed by hearsay or adulation. Brushing aside the romantic link-up and controversies, she keeps her feet on the ground. She’d rather focus on her films than the unwarranted drama of being a star. Measured, intelligent and just as enchanting, Kriti is the new age actress. Raabta, Sushant Singh Rajput and myriad emotions… this young girl is good at frank talk… Raabta is about soulmates. Do you believe in soulmates? I’m not sure about the Dil-To-Pagal-Hai-kind-of soulmate, that someone somewhere is made for you. But I believe in raabta (connection). I do believe that sometimes you connect with people in an instant. There are people whom I’ve met for the first time and ended up chatting with them for hours. I felt I just knew them. I do believe in love. But I don’t know whether soulmates exist. For example, Dinu (producer Dinesh Vijan) and I can chat for hours. Same with Sabbir sir (Khan, director Baaghi). Maybe, we’re Leos that’s why. There’s also Athiya (Shetty). It’s strange because I’ve met her once or twice at parties. She’s someone warm. I get a good vibe from her. I’d always want well for her. It’s inexplicable. She’s not even my best friend. You do forge a connect with some people, something you can’t put a finger on.

I’m more of a switch-on-switch-off person. I don’t get into a character in a way that it stays with me when I go home. Whereas Sushant goes fully into it. His preparation is hardcore, it’s more data-based, it’s detailed. But he does come out of it. For example, in the flashback sequences his character is quite animalistic, intense, close to being emotionless where he doesn’t express at all. But he didn’t remain like that throughout. (Laughs) Thank God!On the other hand, I’m more spontaneous. If I have to cry for a scene, I won’t go back to an emotional memory where someone or something had affected me! I focus on the zone of the scene, what the character would feel rather than what I’d felt in some situation. I don’t want to get depressed playing a poignant character. But yes, training physically for a role can sometimes take a toll on your body. For the horse-riding sequence, they could have used a ‘dupe’. But I wanted to do it myself and I enjoyed it. I began loving horses

What about your raabta with Sushant Singh Rajput? Apparently, you two bonded well over hometown Delhi, food and engineering… More over food than anything else! We discovered an Indian restaurant in Budapest, which serves daalmakhni and chicken tikka. On cheat days, we’d order food from there. (Laughs) Sushant is someone with ‘sweet teeth’ – not just a sweet tooth! I’ve never had as much ice cream as I did in Budapest. Initially, he used to call me ‘Punjaban’ because I enjoyed my butter chicken and other Punjabi stuff. We’d be delighted when rajma chawal was served on the set. It was heaven! Rumours suggest that you both are dating each other since Raabta? (Laughs) What do I say? I’ve stopped saying anything. We sort of make fun of it. We read the gossip as though it’s a daily soap. When we were in Budapest, it was said that we had attended a concert together. I was like which concert was this? After a while we started making fun of it and started enjoying it. Basically, you just ignore it. That’s how I deal with it. Okay, how’s Sushant as a co-star? He came across as a sincere and serious actor in the films that I had watched. But when I worked with him I realised the amount of homework he does and how passionate he is about his craft. He’d come with pages of research he had done on the character. after that. I even underwent weapon training. Do you regret quitting a secure career in engineering for this demanding profession?

Stress is part of every profession. But when you enjoy your work, it doesn’t feel like work. I don’t crib when I’m on the set. In fact, I’m thrilled about it. Learning new things, prepping for a film, is exciting. I believe we’re blessed to be working in an industry where we get a chance to do something different every day. We get an opportunity to play different characters. There’s no chance of monotony setting in. I don’t think I’d have been happy doing a desk job. It would be frustrating. As human beings we’re never satisfied ever. But I’m enjoying my work. I’m improving as an actor and I’m growing as a person also. Do you agree that Dilwale put you in the big league?

I don’t believe you need to do crazy things in love. But sometimes you do things, which are not in your nature for love. I hate cooking. But I’ve cooked for someone, which means that someone is special. Is it difficult to manage a relationship and a career simultaneously Suddenly, one day I can’t say that I want a boyfriend. When it has to happen, it happens. I can’t say I want to focus on my career and I’m unavailable for anything else. When you connect with someone, you simply bond.

It must have. My first film Baaghi was with Tiger Shroff – Jackie Shroff’s son. But at the end of it, we were two newcomers.

Has it happened to you?

What qualities you would you look for in your man?

Do you wish you were a star kid? Not at all! I’m proud that wherever I’ve reached till now has been on my own without a godfather. People believed in me and that has also given me confidence. I’ve followed my heart, done what I believed was best for me. At the end of it all, it’s only about talent. Your surname or a godfather can help you initially but not beyond a point. Then you’re on your own. The audience only wants to see how talented you are, what you bring to the table. How difficult was it to cut ice here? ‘Difficult’ is a subjective term. I was fortunate that I didn’t have to wait for too long. I do know people who can act brilliantly but they’ve never got an opportunity for whatever reasons. But yes, I’ve had my own dilemmas. I had my low points. I completed my B-Tech, where you don’t have time to breathe, along with modelling. Then I came to Mumbai, where I didn’t have anything to do for a long time. I didn’t even know if I had done the right thing. I had no clue about the industry. Living alone can be taxing. There were times when I was so confused that I’d end up crying. There were times when I was offered a big banner film but I couldn’t make up my mind, given the length of the role and the ensemble cast. I guess you just have to be patient and do what you believe is right. How do you generally deal with the lows? I just cry and sleep over it. One of my teachers in a workshop said there’s a difference between being emotional and being sentimental. An emotional person will hang on to one emotion for a long time. But I guess I’m more sentimental. I cry easily. Like if someone were to scold me, I’d start crying. But I’d get over that relatively easily, which is good thing. You should never hold things within you. I’ll watch a film or I’ll call up

No, it’s not happened yet.

Again that’s not planned. I don’t know ya. We all have a list but that list doesn’t exist in reality. Firstly, he has to be taller than me. I can’t have a short boyfriend. It will appear weird when I walk with him. He has to have a good sense of humour. Or else, I wouldn’t be able to talk to him. Also, I would want someone who’s genuine, honest and loyal. What’s the best thing a guy has told you? Physical features ki taarif toh bahut log karte hain. But recently, when we were at a radio station, it was sweet of Sushant to say, ‘She’s absolutely honest – whatever is within her is on her face. She’s not someone who will say things behind your back’. The fact that he realised that felt nice. I’m not someone who can fake it.

Women Face Discrimination Even In Small Decisions, Says Richa Chadha A

ctress Richa Chadha, who is playing a pivotal role in the upcoming web-series "Inside Edge", says that she feels discriminated against as a woman in Indian society.

Asked if she experiences any gender-based struggle in the film industry, Richa said "No, I do not blame Bollywood. But to be honest, as a woman, you have to take all your discriminations based on what men think, right? “You feel discriminated when realising that even small decisions of daily life (are) controlled by men... for example, as a girl you cannot wear short clothes while travelling by public transport.” She added: "So, when you realise that you have to take these small decisions keeping in mind what men think, you know you are in a position of disadvantage. Since Bollywood is in India, where the society limits women's choices like this, why should we blame only the industry?” In "Inside Edge", Richa is playing the role of an actress who owns a cricket team and is trying hard to protect it from corruption and match-fixing. "My character is very interesting and complex because she goes through a lot, but projects herself to the world as a strong woman whereas inside she is vulnerable at times... She does not cry in public as that is a sign of weakness for women," Richa said. Richa feels that while the world of entertainment is changing because of the growth of digital entertainment worldwide, in India, footfalls are going down in theatres. “Our entertainment tax is high so a majority of the population is going to theatres once in three months. Obviously, that is affecting the cinema business. So, I can see the shift is happening like America, where big studios, filmmakers and stars are doing films as well as web-series... There is nothing wrong in that, the line is blurring," she said.

Arjun Rampal: I Started Arun Gawli's Biopic Without His Permission

ne hears that you were planning a biopic on another gangster when you switched to doing one on Arun Gawli…

Yes, three years ago, director Ashim Ahluwalia and I were planning a film on another don when some guys approached me to play Arun Gawli. They assured me that they had the rights and showed me some computer images which brought out the likeness between us. But the script was terrible, one of those completely fictitious accounts with none of the ‘realness’ of a biopic. I didn’t want to be this guy in a white-kurta pyjama and cap, climbing cables. Even the dialogues were filmi! If everything was out of sync, how come you still stepped in? I started reading up on Gawli and found the material engrossing. The man had seen it all, his story spanned decades and I was hooked! What caught my imagination was that people call him “Daddy”. Usually they refer to a don as ‘bhai’ or ‘don’. I realised that although dreaded, he had another side which intrigued me. Buzz is, you rewrote the script? I locked myself up in a hotel for two months and put a structure to the story and sent it to Ashim. Both of us then co-wrote the script. Somewhere along the way, the guys who’d approached me earlier didn’t have the rights so the project fizzled out. By then I’d done so much work on the script that I decided to produce it and approached his family, convincing them to give their nod. After that, I met the big man himself and got his blessings. Tell us about your first interaction with Gawli. I met him when he was out on parole. The first few

times, he was slightly sceptical and I understood that he’s reserved because of his colourful past. For him to accept that someone would be playing him in a film took some adjustment. Also, his story will be out while he’s still living. What’s your take on him? He’s not flamboyant, doesn’t go to dance bars and blow up money on bar girls and mistresses. He’s spent half his life in jail but is a Godfearing, family man. At home, there are photographs of Gods everywhere, he is always praying. He commands respect, thousands come to visit him when he’s on parole, yet he’s also dreaded. Mostly, he is quiet, well-mannered and soft-spoken, but you know he’s walked the dark side. After a few meetings, he started opening up to me. I assured him it wouldn’t be a propaganda story, I wanted to tell it the way it is, in a realistic manner. His consent convinced me this was a man with self-confidence. He is the only guy who stood up to Dawood Ibrahim. You started shooting before he had given his consent, why? We didn’t have a signed agreement but I’d spoken to his family. By the time he came out on parole, we’d finished one schedule. He was taken aback, wondering how I’d started without his official permission. I pointed out he’d verbally committed to me. He said, “Haan maine toh tujhe zabaan di thi.” Why did you lock yourself away for a year-and-a-half? You have to invest a lot to roles like this and Ashim made everything so realistic that during the duration of the shoot, I was living in a different world. Characters like this isolate you and when I was shooting, I rarely wanted to be around people. Even now, I’m tempted to tell someone in Gawli’s style, “Tujhe aake chamkaoon kya?”

“I was enamoured by Nasir saab”

he’s undeniably distinct from her peers. Because Asha Parekh has gone way beyond the paradigm of stardom and its engulfing halo. A noted dancer. Director and producer of hit TV shows like Kora Kagaz and Kangan. Ex-President of CINTAA (Cine and TV Artistes Association). The first female Chairperson of the Censor Board. Distributor of 21 hit films. Founder of the Asha Parekh Hospital in Santacruz… she’s a woman of many shades and much substance. Isn’t it then hard to believe that a woman so driven, an achiever succumbed to depression and had to surmount suicidal thoughts? Well, her autobiography Asha Parekh: The Hit Girl (An autobiography with Khalid Mohamed) reveals both the verve and the vulnerability of the screen goddess of the ’60s with never-before insights. “I’m an emotional person. I follow my heart, not my mind. I tend to brood when someone hurts me or when I believe I’ve hurt someone. I come across as a tough person. But I’m not all that strong,” asserts the 70plus veteran. “People believe I’m just about glamour. But the highlight of my life is not just being a filmstar,” she explains why she eventually felt the need to tell her story. “I have spoken about the highs and the lows in my life. Particularly, the period between the loss of my mother (Sudha aka Salma Parekh) in 1990 and that of my father (Bachubhai Parekh) in 2003. I felt a certain hollowness creeping in,” she says. “I’ve also spoken about the opportunities I missed… about a few other things, which would not have been possible otherwise. It was difficult to be honest,” she confides hinting at her rumoured closeness to filmmaker and mentor, the late Nasir Hussain…

As you know, I’m heavy from below. I’ve got big hips!” she smiles. “So, I consulted Dr Jassawalla. I lost about 15 kilos with his recommended diet and massages. I’d visit him at 6 am everyday and from there go to the set. As I was asked to eat very little, I’d get cranky,” she shares. “Nasir saab would joke, “Issko roti dikha do! Yeh theek ho jaayegi!” MY HEROES The ‘hit girl’ says that she was never hit upon by her heroes. “I’d sit in a corner and be immersed in my book. My mother always accompanied me,” she says. Asha shared a close bond with both, the late Geeta Bali and Shammi Kapoor and addressed them as ‘Chachi’ and ‘Chacha’ respectively. “I called Shammiji ‘Chacha’. There was no way I could have any romantic leanings for him,” she smiles. “I shared a fine rapport with all my heroes,” she maintains. “Once while we were shooting for Hum Hindustani (1960) near the Randhawa falls in Igaptpuri, we got lost. Sunil Dutt saab came searching for the unit in the forest. That was so nice of him,” she reminisces.

HIT HAI! Asha, who began her career as a child artiste, was seen in Madhubala’s film Jwala. Later, director Bimal Roy impressed by 10- year-old Asha’s dance on stage cast her in Maa (1952) and then in Baap Beti (1954). At 16, Asha was rejected by Vijay Bhatt for his film Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959) as he believed she was ‘not star material’. In an uncanny twist, eight days later, producer Subodh Mukherjee and director Nasir Hussain cast her in Dil Deke Dekho (1959) opposite Shammi Kapoor and her fortunes changed overnight. She went on to forge a fruitful association with Nasir Hussain in six films including Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Teesri Manzil (1966), Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) and Caravan (1971). If Nasir Hussain gave her a glamorous image, Raj Khosla lent gravitas to her roles in Do Badan (1966), Chirag (1969) and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). With director Shakti Samanta she did dramatic fare like Pagla Kahin Ka (1970) and Kati Patang (1970), the latter earning her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. Amongst a bevy of beauties, Waheeda Rehman, Nanda, Sadhana and Mala Sinha, Asha earned the title of ‘the jubilee girl’. She was also the highest paid actress and was considered ‘lucky’ for every hero, right from Shammi Kapoor, Joy Mukherjee and Biswajeet to Shashi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna. Ask her if her gorgeousness fetched her compliments and she laughs. “Men used to get frightened to talk to me. They found it hard to compliment me.” She adds, “But I remember when I wore the white sharara for the song Achcha toh hum chalte hain in Aan Milo Sajna, J Om Praksh saab (director) remarked, ‘You’re looking so nice’. He even got a similar outfit made for his daughter Pinky (Roshan) when she got married to Rakesh Roshan.”

And we’d wait and wait for this star to arrive, who would stroll in at 6.30 pm. Once, when he walked in that late, Shashi, whose shift had ended, got up and left. It made no difference to this star,” she narrates adding, “I was so put off by this behaviour, I decided not to act after that.”

Asha is an integral part of Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom. The association began with Rajesh’s earliest film – Baharon Ke Sapne. “Even during Baharon… there was something special about him. He was an introvert and kept to himself. But during Kati Patang, he was a superstar. I remember huge crowds had gathered at Nainital Lake where we were to shoot Jis gali mein tera ghar. On the first day we couldn’t shoot,” she recalls. “I had witnessed the superstardom of Dev Anand – girls going crazy over him, flocking around him. But not like this!” says Asha who shot two films simultaneously with Rajesh Khanna. “From 7 am to 2 pm, we’d be shooting for Kati Patang. And from 2 pm to 10 pm for Aan Milo Sajna.”

She had her own fan following too. “I used to get fan mail by the gunny bags,” she reveals. She recalls a crazy fan experience, “There was this Chinese fellow, who had plonked himself near my gate and just wouldn’t go. He kept tabs on when I came, when I left. Naturally, I started getting scared. So I’d dunk in when my car entered the gate.” She continues, “When the neighbours asked him to go, he brandished his knife saying, ‘I’ll kill you! I’ve come to marry her’. I called up the police commissioner. They put him in Arthur Road Jail. From there, he wrote a letter asking me to bail him out. Arjun on Sunday was present at Lightbox preview theatre for the launch of his song Hawa Hawa from his upcoming movie Mubarakan as well as a prebirthday celebration. The actor wore a T-shirt with a caption 'Underrated Talent'. On being asked about it, Arjun said, "I am a producer's son. I belong to the industry. When a film goes on floor, one person gains and another loses. I have been lucky to get a lot of success. I don't underplay myself, but I don't like showing off. Maybe that's why I am underrated.” Arjun emphasised on taking breaks. He said, "I want to work with better planning. If you do back to back films, then your personal life gets affected. It should be balanced.” The Tevar star also said he plans to enter into direction in the future. "I would love to do direction but I don't know when I will be doing so. I have not made any such exact plans," said Arjun. Mubarakan director Anees Bazmee added, "He should do acting for some years so that we directors can get work.” Asked about the song Hawa Hawa, he said, "Yes, it was a popular song. So we had a responsibility to remix the song in a better way...All have seen this song but maybe it is ready for a remix so that today's youth can enjoy it.” You started shooting before he had given his consent, why? We didn’t have a signed agreement but I’d spoken to his family. By the time he came out on parole, we’d finished one schedule. He was taken aback, wondering how I’d started without his official permission. I pointed out he’d verbally committed to me. He said, “Haan maine toh tujhe zabaan di thi.” Why did you lock yourself away for a year-and-ahalf? You have to invest a lot to roles like this and Ashim made everything so realistic that during the duration of the shoot, I was living in a different world. Love P is the most illogical thing in the whole world- Sushant Singh Rajput eople spend an entire lifetime trying to fit in. Trying to be what others want them to be. But a select few don’t bother with perceptions and expectations. They just walk in and settle with nonchalance and confidence.

Sushant Singh Rajput has gone from being just ‘a face’ to being ‘the face of good cinema’. Through his journey, he’s learnt that he doesn’t need validation from others. He draws inspiration from his own sense of conviction. He’s okay being misunderstood as long as his films and his act in them makes sense. Never too far from controversy and yet never afraid of what’s being spoken about him, SSR is unlike your regular stars. He knows the difference between being a public persona and remaining a rooted person. His honesty is what makes films like Raabta work. An avid mind and a sensitive heart make SSR an actor to reckon with. What was the challenge of doing Raabta? What side as an actor did you explore?

I always enjoy playing challenging roles, characters I’ve never dealt with before. What made me do Raabta? Well, after Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, I was exhausted. So, I went off to Goa. There I was in the pool, sipping beer and reading this script. I liked it. It was so well-written. I was like wow! (Laughs) I even wondered if I liked it because of the beer. It was so wellwritten. There were two characters. It spoke about reincarnation, which I don’t believe in. But I was like I don’t mind playing it for those two and half hours because it’s a nice story. Also, the second character had no references. He’s savage, animalistic and closer to our core nature. We’re just concerned about survival. I’ll kill people or I’ll be killed – that’s his only emotion. And then he experiences other emotions. I wanted to enjoy experiencing that life, that character.

They will take you up; they will bring you down, just to have fun in their lives. It has nothing to do with you. So you can’t take yourself or your fame seriously.In today’s times, being popular doesn’t mean that you’re good. You can be the stupidest of all, you can be the most irritating, foolish guy in the world. But if you are persistant and have no qualms of being a fool, you will be famous. And people will follow you on these platforms, no matter how dumb you are. How important is marketing of a film today? Where I’m concerned, I don’t know how to sell. (Laughs) To be a good marketer you need to be a good liar and a good negotiator. And you should have great communication skills too. Also, if you choose to be actively engaged in the marketing of a film, then you are required to come up with creative ideas, which grabs three minutes of the audience’s attention. Like Ra.One was marketed so innovatively. Who according to you handles the publicity of a film most creatively? Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan! They both are best at it. They’re so innovative when it comes to selling a film. Also they are such big superstars, that when they say something people are bound to pause and listen attentively. The defining point is how you’re saying it and what you’re saying. That captures the audience.

What’s the feedback that you’ve been receiving for your suave look in Raabta? Actually, people have liked both my looks. I worked hard on them. (Laughs) Also, for the first time a lot of people found me looking good. Probably, because I’m dressed well in the film. I’m lip-synching songs… things I haven’t done before. Do you get overwhelmed by praise? I don’t sit and analyse these things. Because I have realised that the audience is huge in India, more than a billion people. So if we start taking what they say seriously, even if the majority is with you, you do tend to get affected by the negative comments on the internet. If you google your name or log on to social media, everything about you is right there. You don’t fear expressing yourself on social platforms. Don’t you fear being trolled? There’s no way that you won’t be trolled, unless when asked for an opinion, you don’t give it. It’s a tricky state that we’re in. If you don’t have an opinion you’re looked down upon. And if you have an opinion then those who disagree with it, will troll you. The platform provides that you work as a group and bring someone down. When you are up, they will bring you down. Coming back to Raabta, it’s about soulmates. How do you view love?

Love is the most illogical thing in the whole f**^^% world. This is how we human beings are made. Falling in love is something for which you may want to find a reason – it’s because of this, it’s because of that. But nothing makes sense. Either you’re in love or you’re not in love. And it can happen for no apparent reason. It’s the most illogical thing, yet it’s the most real. You realise it only after you’ve fallen in love.

I read this thing about us. Then there were stories about a fight and a break-up between Kriti and me. And then suddenly, probably because we were seen taking a drive in the Maserati, we were back together. They are all interesting but untrue. We are really good friends and like spending time together.

Have you fallen in love again? Yes… with the guitar. I’d never thought I’d do anything with music. If you’re talking about falling in love with a human being? No, no! Why have you kept yourself away from that emotion? I’m open to it. But as I said it will happen without reason. Even if you’re too involved with your work and not looking for love, you’ll still fall in love. And you get to know it first. I never hide my feelings and relationships. People believe that if you keep the audience guessing (about your relationship status), the movie will do well. And if you say yes you’ve fallen in love then you will lose your fan following. If somebody were to tell me that my relationship status would decide the fate of my film, then, as an actor I’d be embarrassed. How do you view Kriti Sanon as a co-star? Very good! She’s one of those few special friends I have. In fact, when Dinesh (Vijan) and I were discussing Raabta, I had told him she’d be a great performer. At that point, her second film hadn’t released. I remember we were doing a look test. I love to improvise. So I did something and she reacted to that and I looked at Dinu and smiled. People will realise how good she is because her performance is nuanced. And for someone who hasn’t trained as an actor it will surprise you.

But you did take her for a drive in the Maserati… It’s not like I bought the car and took Kriti for a ride. I had taken the car out for a spin alone the day it was delivered. Nobody clicked any pictures then. It’s said that you two have a lot in common. Yes. I consider myself half an engineer having dropped out of the course and she has done B-Tech. We are both from Delhi. She’s a foodie like me and also confident about her opinions. She’s a wonderful human being. Less of conflict, more of heart. So if she doesn’t like you, she will make sure that you know that. Don’t you miss that one special person with whom you can share everything? It’s not that I don’t like being with people. It’s just that I’m comfortable being with myself. If I’m with people I enjoy it. But if I’m alone I also enjoy that. I’m not lonely. There’s no vacuum in my life. I do share things with my sisters. My elder sister is like my mother. I have a few friends. I discuss things with them too. What kind of a girl would be ideal for you? (Smiles) I wish I had the power to describe her and have her immediately appear in front of me! Probably, someone who’s not very much affected by success and failure, money and fame. She should be able to view things with a sense of humour. Generally, people invest a lot of energy in ‘let’s do something interesting’. But she should be someone who’s okay, not doing anything, just being with me. Also, she may like things, which I may not, yet I genuinely listen to her talk about them. That shows a kind of relationship. So it would be not changing the other person into what you want her to be. Rather take her as she is. Okay, how do girls react to you? They look at me and smile and I smile back. It’s an irony because we used to work so hard back in college to get this kind of attention. I wish this had happened while I was in college. In college, people would look at me with a confused expression wondering how I had got in. You need to be intelligent to get into an engineering college. They’d rag me and ask, ‘Are you from the army quota?’ But I eventually became one of the popular guys even though I had no money. Of course, no one imagined that I’d amount to anything. I was hardly there in class. At what age did you have your first girlfriend? When I was in the fourth grade… The definition of a girlfriend is subjective. It changes with age. Those were the days of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. I was a kid but understood this is what a guy should be like… not

studying, drinking beer but holding cultural values. Then I had a girlfriend when I was in the eighth grade. She was my senior. That was the time of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (KKHH). The film changed things for me. I got less marks because of KKHH. Do men hit on you? Probably… but I don’t get to know. Normally, you sense things that you expect. And that’s not what I’m expecting. So I don’t get it many times but there are times when I do understand. I don’t mind it. It’s a compliment. Your detractors believe success has made you arrogant. You only see things that you expect to see. We’re wired to think in a certain way. So from a general point of view, for someone, who had nothing and who has suddenly tasted success, the normal expectation would be that he will grow arrogant. Even actors are aware of this fact. Perhaps, that’s why some of them just put on a charade of humility. But I’m not someone who has thought about all this. I’ve always been what I am. Is your honesty then misconstrued? It’s more to do with the kind of questions that you’re asking me and the kind of answers I’d like to give. Also, I’ve always been confident about my work. But now when I sound confident it comes across as arrogance. Now when I say that I don’t want to give an opinion, it means something else. Now if I’m exhausted and I’m late for something – and I hate being late – and somebody asks for a picture and I refuse, it’s viewed as arrogance. So it’s all about what I’m in your head. And that’s your headache. My headache is that I like it when I’m being understood. Since that doesn’t happen normally in real life, I try to do that through my films and characters. Does not winning awards dishearten you? Why should I be disheartened? Any kind of positive feedback, validation and acknowledgement is always good. So if I get an award, I’ll naturally feel good. But at the same time you have to understand that it is as true as it’s not. For instance, I may not be thinking of chocolates. But if you offer them, I’ll take it saying thank you because I love chocolates. But if you don’t do that, I’ll probably not miss having a chocolate. So not being recognised by some award means nothing because it’s not relevant. Anything you’d like to change about yourself? I’m a much better guy from what I was four years back. I was extremely ambitious. But when things that once seemed impossible happened, I grew confident. I was enjoying what I was doing then. But at the same time I was too obsessed about the future. Today I don’t invest my energy in thinking about it. I live in the present now. And smoking? It’s the most disgusting thing that anyone can take to in his or her life. This is the truth. Dobaara – See Your Evil is up for a June 2, 2017 release and it sees the return of Lisa Ray on the big screen after last year’s Veerappan. Lisa Ray is a choosy when it comes to doing films in Bollywood. How else can you explain her doing just four Bollywood films including upcoming Dobaara – See Your Evil in last sixteen years. Lisa Ray talked about her upcoming film, her character, the comparisons with the original Oculus and working with Adil Hussain. Having done quite a few international projects, she also spoke about the rise of Priyanka Chopra and how she is proud of her achievements. Having done a movie like Dobaara, she told me, she is not a fan of the genre and usually find herself hiding while watching a horror film in theatre. However, she told me that she’s a fan of Jack Nicholson’s The Shining and spoke at length about what makes that film the masterpiece in horror genre. he actor speaks about movies and relationships. How was it working with Huma Qureshi?

It’s like family. We never thought we would do a film together, but it happened… Then we started shooting together. It was difficult also because we have worked with people who we had never met in life. So you get to know about the person. Here you are with the person who you already know. I think the discovery of another actor on set is also very important for me as an actor. So we had to balance that thing. I tried to maintain a balance between professional and personal relationship while working on the sets. It is because of the fact that you are family and work together, sometimes the lines tend to get blurred, but then you enjoy that also. Sometimes, I speak to Huma as an actor and sometimes as a brother. What kind of equation do you share with Huma Qureshi? We don’t treat each other like sibling in real life. We are like friends. If you see har bhai bahan ek doosre se sab share nahi karte. There is always a fear between siblings that usey ye na pata chal jaye. But between me and Huma there is nothing we don’t discuss. We are best friends first then siblings. We are number one on each other’s speed dial. Koi bhi issue ho she will call me and I will call her. It’s like that equation we share. We don’t hesitate to share anything with each other. What are the things that make you fight with each other? Small things. Like when I get up early I don’t like to speak. I will do my work quietly. I like to wake up take my one hour then do whatever you want. So I need that one hour to reassess ki kya karna hai din bhar. But if you want to talk to me right in the morning and keep talking, I will get irritated. Is baat pe jhagda hota hai because Huma is a morning person. She wakes up very fresh and she likes to talk. we have been staying together since six years now we have figured each other’s place. How do you see her as an actor? I think we brought different energies. As actors, we have different energies and that kind of helped while shooting the film. It made us understand each other as actors more. We got to know each other’s process of working. For that, I think this film was a great exercise and we

had great fun shooting. Do you believe in Aatma? No, I don’t believe in such thing. I have heard that too many people have encountered. I heard so many stories from my Nani and Dadi, but it never happened to me so I don’t believe. Your favourite horror film? Ramgopal Verma’s Raat (1992) and The shining (1980). A rare combination of heart, head and humility, Kriti Sanon is both beautiful and sensitive. Her IQ is rivalled by her EQ as she’s imbibed the best of both her engineering background and her artistic vocation. She’s barely a few films old, but her fan following and her star value overshadow her experience. She knows better than to get swayed by hearsay or adulation. Brushing aside the romantic link-up and controversies, she keeps her feet on the ground. She’d rather focus on her films than the unwarranted drama of being a star. Measured, intelligent and just as enchanting, Kriti is the new age actress. Raabta, Sushant Singh Rajput and myriad emotions… this young girl is good at frank talk… Raabta is about soulmates. Do you believe in soulmates? I’m not sure about the Dil-To-Pagal-Hai-kind-of soulmate, that someone somewhere is made for you. But I believe in raabta (connection). I do believe that sometimes you connect with people in an instant. There are people whom I’ve met for the first time and ended up chatting with them for hours. I felt I just knew them. I do believe in love. But I don’t know whether soulmates exist. For example, Dinu (producer Dinesh Vijan) and I can chat for hours. Same with Sabbir sir (Khan, director Baaghi). Maybe, we’re Leos that’s why. There’s also Athiya (Shetty). It’s strange because I’ve met her once or twice at parties. She’s someone warm. I get a good vibe from her. I’d always want well for her. It’s inexplicable. She’s not even my best friend. You do forge a connect with some people, something you can’t put a finger on.

After a while we started making fun of it and started enjoying it. Basically, you just ignore it. That’s how I deal with it. Okay, how’s Sushant as a co-star? He came across as a sincere and serious actor in the films that I had watched. But when I worked with him I realised the amount of homework he does and how passionate he is about his craft. He’d come with pages of research he had done on the character. He’d come up with intelligent suggestions. He’s inspiring especially for someone like me who hasn’t worked much in the industry. How much do you get affected by the character you play? I’m more of a switch-on-switch-off person. I don’t get into a character in a way that it stays with me when I go home. Whereas Sushant goes fully into it. His preparation is hardcore, it’s more data-based, it’s detailed. But he does come out of it. For example, in the flashback sequences his character is quite animalistic, intense, close to being emotionless where he doesn’t express at all. But he didn’t remain like that throughout. (Laughs) Thank God!On the other hand, I’m more spontaneous. If I have to cry for a scene, I won’t go back to an emotional memory where someone or something had affected me! I focus on the zone of the scene, what the character would feel rather than what I’d felt in some situation. I don’t want to get depressed playing a poignant character. But yes, training physically for a role can sometimes take a toll on your body. For the horse-riding sequence, they could have used a ‘dupe’. But I wanted to do it myself and I enjoyed it. I began loving horses after that. I even underwent weapon training. Do you regret quitting a secure career in engineering for this demanding profession? Stress is part of every profession. But when you enjoy your work, it doesn’t feel like work. I don’t crib when I’m on the set. In fact, I’m thrilled about it. Learning new things, prepping for a film, is exciting. I believe we’re blessed to be working in an industry where we get a chance to do something different every day. We get an opportunity to play different characters. There’s no chance of monotony setting in. I don’t think I’d have been happy doing a desk job. It would be frustrating. As

human beings we’re never satisfied ever. But I’m enjoying my work. I’m improving as an actor and I’m growing as a person also. Do you agree that Dilwale put you in the big league? It must have. My first film Baaghi was with Tiger Shroff – Jackie Shroff’s son. But at the end of it, we were two newcomers.

Is it difficult to manage a relationship and a career simultaneously? A relationship cannot be planned. Suddenly, one day I can’t say that I want a boyfriend. When it has to happen, it happens. I can’t say I want to focus on my career and I’m unavailable for anything else. When you connect with someone, you simply bond. Has it happened to you?

The film did well. People liked us. After Dilwale a lot more people know me. Not coming from a film background, not having a surname that people can relate to instantly, it’s important that more people watch your film. Of course, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have a huge fan following. Rohit Shetty’s films are loved all over and it did well overseas too. Do you wish you were a star kid? Not at all! I’m proud that wherever I’ve reached till now has been on my own without a godfather. People believed in me and that has also given me confidence. I’ve followed my heart, done what I believed was best for me. At the end of it all, it’s only about talent. Your surname or a godfather can help you initially but not beyond a point. Then you’re on your own. The audience only wants to see how talented you are, what you bring to the table. How difficult was it to cut ice here? ‘Difficult’ is a subjective term. I was fortunate that I didn’t have to wait for too long. I do know people who can act brilliantly but they’ve never got an opportunity for whatever reasons. But yes, I’ve had my own dilemmas. I had my low points. I completed my B-Tech, where you don’t have time to breathe, along with modelling. Then I came to Mumbai, where I didn’t have anything to do for a long time. I didn’t even know if I had done the right thing. I had no clue about the industry. Living alone can be taxing. There were times when I was so confused that I’d end up crying. There were times when I was offered a big banner film but I couldn’t make up my mind, given the length of the role and the ensemble cast. I guess you just have to be patient and do what you believe is right. How do you generally deal with the lows? I just cry and sleep over it. One of my teachers in a workshop said there’s a difference between being emotional and being sentimental. An emotional person will hang on to one emotion for a long time. But I guess I’m more sentimental. I cry easily. Like if someone were to scold me, I’d start crying. But I’d get over that relatively easily, which is good thing. You should never hold things within you. I’ll watch a film or I’ll call up friends or my mom 10 times a day. You should talk to people who you are close to or do things that you enjoy doing. That’s the only way out. What’s the craziest thing you have done in love? I don’t believe you need to do crazy things in love. But sometimes you do things, which are not in your nature for love. I hate cooking. But I’ve cooked for someone, which means that someone is special.

No, it’s not happened yet. What qualities you would you look for in your man? Again that’s not planned. I don’t know ya. We all have a list but that list doesn’t exist in reality. Firstly, he has to be taller than me. I can’t have a short boyfriend. It will appear weird when I walk with him. He has to have a good sense of humour. Or else, I wouldn’t be able to talk to him. Also, I would want someone who’s genuine, honest and loyal. What’s the best thing a guy has told you? Physical features ki taarif toh bahut log karte hain. But recently, when we were at a radio station, it was sweet of Sushant to say, ‘She’s absolutely honest – whatever is within her is on her face. She’s not someone who will say things behind your back’. The fact that he realised that felt nice. I’m not someone who can fake it.

Tusshar Kapoor’s son, Laksshya, celebrated his first birthday yesterday and it was definitely a very proud moment for the actor. The star was busy planning a very intimate birthday bash since the past couple of days and post the celebrations we had an opportunity to have a candid chat with him. As the star was busy travelling for his shoot, we had a telephonic conversation with him, where he spilled the beans on what transpired at the much talkedabout bash, how time flew by and why he hates leaving his son alone ever. I never wanted to keep him away from the limelight. I was just scared back then. But now that he’s one year old, I will share it henceforth just the way I did yesterday. I wanted to wait for a year but now I will. I don’t even like to display everything because some things are too precious. Some things are very private and some things you can share with the world. It should be that way. One wish that you would like to make on behalf of your son? I would just wish him all the happiness, health, wealth and that he really grows up well to be a smart and caring human being. If I could give half the things which my parents gave me, it would be more than enough. Any resolution you want to make as a father?

First of all congratulations on your son’s first birthday! How were the celebrations? The bash was very nice and an extremely intimate one. I had invited around 10-15 kids of his age and there were many activities planned for them. I was busy playing the good host and was constantly running from here to there.

There is no resolution because that would mean I am unsure if I have to make a resolution. But I would always like to be there for him, whenever he needs a father’s support. What is the one thing Laksshya does that makes your day?

Did the time fly by for you? How would you describe this first year?

That would be when he starts laughing or giggling. His laughter makes my day.

Yeah, time has really flown by and it was a very special year for me. I just feel very fulfilled and there is no time to get bored. There is no time to think much but lots of joy. There are huge responsibilities but I don’t really mind that.

Yesterday when we saw his pictures, he looked scared by all the attention…

Any special moment that has been etched in your mind? I think it would be the first time that I saw him on the cot and took him in my arms. After that, there has been several of them…I can’t really pick one. It has been a very emotional and beautiful journey. He was a bit scared. Usually he’s very camera friendly but last night there were so many of them clicking him randomly that he felt scared. But he was quite well behaved and didn’t cry looking at all the new faces. He was okay! You even took him to the Golmaal Again sets in Hyderabad. Did he enjoy it? I didn’t take him on the sets because there was too much of heat and we were shooting outdoors. But he loved being in the hotel, lobby and on the pool side. He enjoyed the weather there. Do you plan to take him with you on all the shoots?

Talking about the journey, have you documented the same? Yeah, I have lots of photos and videos shot by me and my family members and they all are so special to me! So, don’t you think you should share the same pictures and videos with your fans? We are sure they would love to see.

I do wish that. If it’s a small schedule of 3-4 days then maybe no. But if it’s a longer schedule then definitely yes. Which is the first movie of yours that you will like him to watch? As a child, I would love if he watches the Golmaal series

I met Saif Ali Khan at the Royal Opera Theatre. What an apt location for coffee and conversations with the Nawab. He is shooting for his next film Bazaar, and is dressed in a silk dhoti with a shawl draped over one shoulder. Sara is set to make a debut. How does that make you feel? A little nervous. Fear is the most driving factor in the industry. Why would she want that for herself? Look at where she studied. After having done that, why wouldn’t she want to live and work in New York, rather than do this? I am not looking down on acting, it’s just it is not the most stable profession. And everyone lives in constant fear. And there is no guarantee that despite doing your best, you will succeed. This is not the life, any parent would want for their children. She has grown up around you, her mom Amrita, your mom Sharmila, aunt Soha and Kareena. How can she not want to be an actor? True. I remember years ago we’d gone for a stage show abroad and while I was on the stage with Salman and other actors, Sara was standing behind the stage curtain and looking at us. I knew then that she wanted this for herself. Being on stage and people shouting her name. So many actors in the family, who is Sara most likely to talk to you, about things related to films?I think she would come to me. I think she would come to me. Not Kareena? Given she is an actress? No. She’d look upto her for different reasons. The other day she and some of her friends had come over and they were looking at Kareena and I am certain they all want to emulate her and be a diva. Were you involved in the decision of selecting her first film or was it just Amrita? No, I wasn’t involved in it. Look, I am there if she needs to ask or talk to me about anything. I know what she is doing and we talk about films just like we do about everything else. You know, in our house on the dinner table, the conversations are not usually about films. e’ve seen him in the steamy hot monsoon song, Mohabbat Barsa Dena Tu, with Surveen Chawla and opposite Sunny Leone in Ek Paheli Leela quite recently. After venturing into quite a few Bollywood films and modelling assignments, the actor will now make his debut on television with Aarambh. The actor plays the role of Varundev in this upcoming period drama, written by KV Vijayendra Prasad who also penned Baahubali. The promos of the show are out and they look every bit promising. Rajniesh will be seen opposite popular South actress, Karthika Nair. In fact, the two onscreen arch rivals will even have a few romantic sequences in the show eventually. Rajniesh got up close and personal with BollywoodLife about his upcoming show, his equation with the co-stars and his no-kissing clause. Even though he himself prefers watching an Iron Fist or a House Of Cards on his free time, he accepts that Indian fiction shows are a rage and even some of family members are hooked to quite a lot of Indian television shows. With so many period dramas like ChandraNandini, Chandrakantha, Peshwa Bajirao, etc. the actor is not really that nervous about his show and is confident that it will strike a chord with the audience. Here are excerpts from the interview. What made you choose Aarambh? I was in talks with the channel for a mini series while

I was doing Wajah Tum Ho. During that time, they came up with Aarambh and they wanted me to listen to it to see if I like it. Then I obviously spoke to Goldie (Behl) sir when I went for the narration. I loved the idea. I was blown away and I was like ‘Yeh toh karna hai’. He said that this won’t be a mini series but it will be a mega series and I will have to commit for one and a half years. I took a day and I said I’m for it. I loved the characters, even my character of Varundev. It has been written really well. This has never been seen on TV before. It has limited episodes which is good. It is something which has action, romance, political drama and there is a lot of masala also in it. It’s a good mix of everything. My character, Varundev, is a righteous man. He is a warrior from the Aryan clan. He is someone who has the sixth sense and he sort of gauges what could happen next. Along with that, he is also fighting for his father’s honour and dignity, which he doesn’t get from the Aryan clan. We’re also fighting for a land that the Aryans are also eyeing and Varundev takes the charge of doing that. From being a small soldier to the warrior is also his journey. I loved that entire part. How much time did you spend to transform your physique for the role? When I signed it, I straight away joined martial arts. I was still shooting for Wajah Tum Ho. Actually if you see, within Wajah Tum Ho also there is some change of my physique. It should not have been there but it was, because I was preparing for this (Aarambh) also. Then I was taking sword-fighting sessions, horse-riding, action on horses also because horses were the Aryan’s main animals. Your look as Varundev is very Jon Snow-ish. Any comments on that? When we were working on it, from our side, we tried some 15-20 wigs. Eventually we locked something like this which looked perfectly like this. I was adamant that I

need a wig which makes my face to look like a lion, since that was the Dravidian’s symbol. Obviously, I have seen Game Of Thrones, I love it. I think the fur and all that adds to it. You have added a no-kissing clause. Why this rule, specifically for television? No no, I won’t be kissing in films also from now. It has always been my rule but then, some songs like Mohabbat Barsa Dena Tu and all have done well digitally, earned a lot of money for the producers. They are titillating songs and sensational hits. But I feel that, personally for me, for my relation, it’s not right. Because I do have a daughter also. I feel it’s not right for my wife and my daughter. My wife is not an actress but we do have emotions and we have known each other even before I started modelling. I want the love to never get affected by any of this so I’ll cut off anything that might affect it. There are a lot of costume/ period dramas on television at the moment. Are you nervous that you will be competing with them? This is an epic which is a fantasy/ fiction. I have seen ChandraNandini. My family likes the show and some of my friends, their family watch Naagin, too. It is interesting to see the TV audience, because for me this is new. I would put on an Iron Fist or a House Of Cards. Otherwise I can watch Khatron Ke Khiladi or Nach Baliye, something like that. That is my cup of tea. But personally, from the story point of view, it should be gripping. But besides the story, what would set this apart from the other shows is the way it is shot. It is a visual treat for the audience. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for good TRPs. How’s your equation with your co-stars? I haven’t shot with Tanuja (Mukherji) ma’am much. Actually I haven’t shot at all with her. But otherwise it’s good. With Karthika also, it’s good. We’ve done workshops together and we’re opponents onscreen. Since I’m going very methodical, I’m a different person on the set. Sometimes, I am a little aggressive. But I do get along really well with the boys. The camaraderie with the boys is winning hands down right now. Which fictional TV show do you love the most right now? Thinks. A lot) I like watching Bhabhiji Gharpe Hai sometimes. I also like Ishqbaaz. Besides that, I watch reality shows. The show is being promoted as ‘By The Writer Of Baahubali’. Your thoughts on the strategy? That’s totally on the channel. That’s the marketing team. It’s like you’re pitching it as Baahubali on the small screen but then, I think, we are completely away from Baahubali. We just have a few things similar to Baahubali. Like the writer, it’s an epic fantasy/ fiction, it’s very VFX heavy and the female lead’s name is Devsena. We’re just hoping that people love the story. So I never felt the need to ever speak about it. But I have realised it since then, that every month, some actor or actress is picked on or trolled," Ayesha said. Her family stands by her all through -- and so the criticism does not affect the mother of a three-year-old son. "I've been blessed with the most awesome family life and I have a great support system. I have a very full life with a child, businesses and things. So I don't take the time to notice the negativity around," said the actress, whose last big screen outing was the 2013 film "Aap Ke Liye Hum". hen Ranbir Kapoor dipped his toes into production with 'Jagga Jasoos', there was buzz about the actor planning to revive RK Studios established by his late grandfather and Bollywood's original showman, Raj Kapoor. However, by the end of his first and muchdelayed co-production, the 34-year-old seems to be done with filmmaking. Speaking to mid-day, Ranbir confesses that he doesn't wish to produce any more films: "I have realised it's not my cup of tea. This [Jagga Jasoos] is my first and last film as a producer. I am happy being an actor. I am lazy and don't think I am cut out to be a filmmaker. I am glad, though, that I have been credited as producer for 'Jagga Jasoos'.” Discussing the multiple hurdles and delay that the upcoming film encountered, the star says he cannot pinpoint one person or reason behind it. "None of us knew that the film would take so much time. I think it's everyone's mistake and we are all to be blamed for the delay," he adds. ‘Jagga Jasoos' is an attempt at an out-andout family-oriented movie, Ranbir Kapoor says. "When dada (director Anurag Basu) and I got into a discussion almost three years ago, we realised that we don't have specific films in India for children. So, we wanted to make one that families would enjoy. It's a visual treat with thrilling elements; it's a cute father-son story.” While Ranbir has always managed to earn praise for his performances, 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' (2016) was his first hit in three years since 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' (2013). Ask him if box office success is sine qua non for stardom, he says, "I act not to impress myself, so I need all my films to do well. When a film works at the box office, it reflects the fact that people are watching the film; to have that understanding as any actor is really important."

kshaye Khanna is the kind of actor, your seniors warn you about: "He doesn't talk!" they say. He admits that interacting with the press is a petrifying experience for him. But after a fiveyear sabbatical, he is keen to reinvent himself. As we sit down for a chat about his upcoming Sridevistarrer Mom, he talks movies and living the life of a social recluse. Are you making more measured choices these days? I have never planned or been cerebral about my choices. I react to stories and they become mine. Mom is a beautiful story with emotional depth. There is menace, mystery and it's layered with intrigue. I watched the film about a week ago. It is the kind of stuff that will stay with people. But then again, I am hardly objective about my own work. I can tell my bad films from the good, but that's about it. Mom is the kind of movie which made me feel. 'Thank God I said yes', it's a thriller, but there's way too much to it than just suspense.

fame, appreciation - it all comes in a package. It's a part of what I signed up for when I became an actor. If you take away his body of work, Salman Khan will also collapse as a superstar. Are you okay with the tag of being a recluse? I am the biggest social recluse ever. There's nothing wrong with it or to be ashamed of. I have always been this person. It might be in conflict with how the world functions today. Anyone from this industry must conduct his career differently. An actor should be more public, social and onthe- face. I should change my ways in the coming years. Who knows... I could be tweeting my heart out. I need to be more practical. I have been stupid to not put myself out there. It isn't the most sensible thing to do. Actors need to be more flexible. I think I have made tremendous progress. I have a morbid fear of the press, being seen and being talked about. There is no logical reason behind it. Nothing specific triggered it. But if I saw myself on a magazine cover, I would look away. I would shut a paper if there is an interview of mine.

How did you deal with failure? That's weirdâ&#x20AC;Ś In the entertainment universe, the actor is the most greedy and needy creature of the lot. He is vulnerable and dependent on other people's talent for him to breathe or showcase his talent. Actors also walk away with the lion's share of credit, more than they deserve. Dealing with failure and success is as easy as it is difficult. People who have spent a substantial amount of time in public life know how to grapple with it. Early in life, I knew that to survive here, I need to start following the Johnny Walker mantra Keep Walking. The emphasis is to keep the creative process going regardless of the fate of a film.

I don't like it and I still have that fear. I know it's strange. I had become so comfortable with my solitude, that all this didn't matter. But, I am in the midst of a diabolical change and I think the fear is fading away finally. I don't think people have agendas against each other anymore. Do you feel out-of-place in the world of social media? I like social media because it allows everyone to be free. You can say whatever the f**k you want - be stupid, be smart, be insane, be you.

Is it specially reinvigorating to work with talents like Sridevi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui?

Did you feel the same way when the picture of your late father (Vinod Khanna) looking frail went viral?

I have worked with the best of the best from the beginning of my career. I have never learnt anything specific from any select individual, no matter who the star is. But subconsciously, we all pick up traits, quirks and mannerisms from those around us. I am not the one who can glamourise it and say, 'Oh, I learnt this from Sridevi. That's bull***t. Some day, years later, I will know what I picked up from her.

Social media is something people can of course have issues with. But that's like having issues with the air you breathe. Being hurt or angry, didn't matter then. Why even waste time talking about it now? Have you come to terms with the loss? It's too raw right now. I don't think I have been able to absorb it yet. There's so much to say, but words fail me.

What changed after you returned from your sabbatical? Nothing. I am still me. What probably hit me hard was that I value being on a film set. The sabbatical was a good thing. If an actor stops acting, something inside him crumbles and dies. Moreover, the audience in India barely gives them as many chances to entertain them. I would be a fool if I didn't realise how fortunate I am to be getting good work despite the break and the flops. I can't imagine why I deserve this chance. Maybe I have done something right for this to happen to me. Were you ever lured by the glitz and glamour of the entertainment world? Yes and no. Just to say no, would be lying. Phullu actor Sharib Hashmi was scared of Akshay Kumarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Padman

ne of this week’s release is Sharib Hashmistarrer, Phullu. Just a day before the release the movie created a storm on social media, with Twitterati lashing out at CBFC for giving the movie an A certificate. You see, Phullu is made on socially relevant topic. It talks about the taboo surrounding menstruation, and is a story of a man who vowed to fight it.

Then there was the fact that the central theme of the movie is very similar to Akshay Kumar’s still-onfloors film, Padman. We got a chance to chat with Sharib about these two major problems. Here are the excerpts: Twitter is raging with posts calling out CBFC for certifying a socially relevant film like Phullu with an ‘A’ certificate. What is your take on that? As per me, I don’t get at all why Phullu has been given a A certificate. Its a clean film and addresses a very strong social issue. When the entire day there are ads of sanitary pads running and even kids can watch it. So why can’t we talk about the taboo that is attached to the topic through a film? Why has it been given A certificate is out of my comprehension!

I won’t lie. When we came to know about the announcement of a movie called Padman, we were actually very scared. I can only speak for myself. My film got censored in November. And in December it was announced. We were ready with our film already. Akshay Kumar sir is a superstar. If he is coming with a movie, no one would watch ours. But the advantage we had was that we were ready with Phullu. Padman is based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham. It’s a biopic. Phullu is a fictional story. Theme is same, issue is same but the storyline is going to be very different. I hope it is different. What was the research that went into making Phullu? There was a lot of research that went into penning the script by our writer and director. They went to a lof villages. It was not a story writter in a week. In 2014, the concept was thought of by our director Abhishek Saxena, and with writer Shine Iqbal he developed the idea. I got the script in September 2015. I loved the script, and in April 2016 we shot for it. We bettered the script during the shooting. What was your knowledge of menstruation while growing up? I had no idea of the concept of menstruation. In our country people don’t talk to boys about this topic. We keep them as far away from the topic that we don’t even know it exists. When I got my first girlfriend in the college, I got to know that there is a menstruation cycle. I was clueless before that. I want them to step out with a smile on their face and a few tears in their eyes.

The audience will get limited due to the certification and it will miss the target audience… 100 per cent. That is very obvious. We wanted teenagers watch this film, especially teenage boys. Women from every section of the society should have been able to watch this film. Now, when you attach an A certificate to a movie, these audience are always cut off. And, in a way your hands are tied. I feel like… Didn’t you guys think of contesting the decision? We are low budget filmmakers. The budget we had was limited, and we get a release date after a lot of hassle. If we send the movie for re-censoring due to the A certificate, then we had no clue how long they will keep us hanging. We have seen it happening, some movies are stuck with censor board for a year or two. We were in no position to afford that. I remorse over what has happened but nothing else could be done. Ekta Kapoor: No issues with CBFC, my problem is with society

fter fighting many battles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the trailer of Alankrita Shrivastav directorial venture "Lipstick Under My Burkha" was released on Tuesday in Mumbai. During the film's trailer launch, Ekta Kapoor, who will be presenting and distributing the film, said that she had no problem with the CBFC, but with the society. ''There is no problem with CBFC, my problem is with society, which at some point speaks about the same issue in its own ways. If you talk to any girl, you will come to know about five to 10 such incidents happening with her in one day where, being a woman, she has to prove herself a little harder. She has to learn how to combat from a very young age,'' Ekta Said. Explaining about the middle finger shown in the poster of the film "Lipstick Under My Burkha", Ekta said: "The middle finger is not for the CBFC but pointed towards the patriarchal society that does not let us come out, which compels us to suppress our voice. That is why this issue is not just CBFC's, this issue is about ideology, it is about patriarchy.â&#x20AC;? During the press conference, the panel consisted of Ekta Kapoor, Alankrita Srivastava, Konkana Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur. The film, produced by Prakash Jha, was stuck with the CBFC for six months as it revolves around four women and their sexual desires and freedom. But finally, the CBFC has passed the trailer of the film with 'A' certificate. Ratna Pathak Shah, who was one of the senior most actors among the four women in the film, said the film should not be loaded with any label as it is difficult to live with and she did this film as she found it very interesting and funny. "Let's not load the film down with words such as 'life changing movement' or 'new wave' etc., as these things, these labels can be very hard to live with. "When I saw the film, I found it extremely interesting, extremely sensitive, funny film. I enjoyed watching it and I think even the audience will do," said the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai actress. She also addressed the issue of Goods and Services Tax (GST) by saying: "Not just lipstick, but sanitary pads should also not be taxed by the government. It's a necessity for a woman's hygiene.â&#x20AC;? "Lipstick Under My Burkha", starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur and Vikrant Massey, has already created a great buzz among the audience. When you’ve been in films for over two decades, the film industry is your home. Golmaal Again will mark your return to slapstick comedies after more than a decade. What was the experience like? I’ve wanted to do a light-hearted film for a long time, more so because my mother was fed up of me doing rona-dhona roles. A lot of people too have been saying that they wanted to see me in a comedy like Biwi No 1 and Hera Pheri. I remember joking with Rohit Shetty at parties, saying, “I want to be part of the Golmaal franchise because I want to just stand there and laugh.” To be honest, even in a film like Golmaal Again, I’m the more serious and credible character, but as part of the team, I get the chance to stand there and laugh at the boys (Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Kemmu) who are doing what they do best.

It’s nice to be able to romance the same hero on screen even after 23 years. What draws you to a film today? For me, the most important aspect is how my character is written and if it allows me to engage with myself when I am in front of the camera. The length of the role is unimportant. When I did Hu Tu Tu (1999) in which I was ready to bomb my own mother or for that matter Maqbool (2003) in which I had a hand in a murder, there were few characters so layered and dark being written for women. I’m grateful to Gulzar saab and Vishal Bhardwaj for giving me these films at a point when I was bored being Miss Goody-Two-Shoes. I realised then, that I had to take a chance with my roles and I’m glad I did.

I’m working with Rohit for the first time and I’m really happy. There is an unexplained familiarity when I’m on the sets with him. He’s completely focused on the action but at the same time, he makes his actors comfortable. Ajay and you share a bond that goes beyond work, right? Yes, Ajay and I have known each other for 25 years. He was my cousin Sameer Arya’s neighbour and close buddy, a part of my growing up years and that has laid the foundation of our relationship. When I was young, Sameer and Ajay would spy on me, follow me around and threaten to beat up any boys who are caught talking to me. My Five Decades In Films Went By In Moments: Dharmendra

eteran actor Dharmendra says he feels he completed over five decades in showbiz in moments, and now wonders how it went by so

soon.

"'Ek lamba safar lamhun mein guzar gaya'...If we see it has been a long journey and it went by in moments. I now think why it went by so soon. I miss my colleagues, the atmosphere. I miss so many things. It was a beautiful journey," Dharmendra said. Dharmendra, who traces his roots to Punjab, entered showbiz in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere going on to create an image of Bollywood's He-Man, after Dara Singh. The senior actor, who will soon complete 60 years in the industry, has entertained audiences with movies of all genres — from the intense Bandini and Satyakam to potboilers like Raja Jani and Pratigya, and as a comic artist with perfect timing in Sholay and Chupke Chupke.

“Stressing on your achievements or other things hold no meaning.” Dharmendra has worked with his wife and Bollywood's Dream Girl Hema Malini in films like Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay and Dream Girl. Post marriage, the couple was seen in movies like Alibaba aur 40 Chor, Baghavat, Samraat and Razia Sultan. He is averse to the idea of a biopic on his life, but turns to Urdu poetry to reflect on his journey and life. The 81-year-old said, “I'm an emotional person; so this (poetry) is a good outlet for me. 'Jab kuch kaha na jae, jab kuch suna na jae, tab meri tanhai meri khamoshi se, aur khamoshi meri tanhai se baatein kar leti hai' (When nothing is said and done, my silence and my loneliness converse with each other).” The actor, who is looking forward to his grandson Karan's Bollywood debut with Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, is content with the love and admiration he is getting.

He proved his skills as an actor with Anupama and Yakeen. In recent times, he was seen in Life In A... Metro, Apne and Yamla, Pagla, Deewana.

“What's the benefit of writing a book on your life? I don't want to reach out that much to people. I have reached enough. I have touched their heart. I live in their heart, not in their brain.”

Dharmendra is known for his simplicity, humbleness and staying connected to his roots. The actor says he doesn't believe in being a "superstar but a super-human being".

Ask him who can be the next Bollywood's Yamla Pagla Deewana? "Only Dharmendra can be yamla, pagala and deewana at the same time.”

He has infused these qualities in his sons — Sunny and Bobby — and says that they are taking it forward by teaching the same to the next generation.

On the work front, he is working on his first international short film Dream Catcher, and will reunite with his sons for the third instalment of Yamla Pagla Deewana film franchise.

"Fame and glamour don't remain. Being humble and grounded is what will remain (with you). People will say nice things about you. It is not a thought-out action and comes automatically. It came to me from my parents, from me it has gone to Sunny and Bobby," he says.

The Delhi-based viral sensation, who stumped everyone in May when her Selfie Maine Liya rap exploded the Internet and crossed over 15 million views, has agreed for an interview a month after remaining elusive. When asked if she'd agree to a photo shoot, she says yes. But, there's a catch. Pooja needs to go shopping to the mall first. And if she finds great clothes, she says, she will think about it. arrie Fisher had cocaine, methadone, heroin and ecstasy in her system when she died in December, according to an autopsy report. The actress's autopsy report was released on Monday, reports variety.com.
