Anushka Sharma’s production debut NH 10 is inching closer to it’s release date. The actress is undoubtedly nervous about the film but is extremely hopeful that the story will captivate viewers.

I’m not going to act in every film I produce! Anushka Sharma

BollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY caught up with the NH 10 actress for a chat. Excerpts from the interview…

How nervous are you now that the release date is approaching? All the pressure and grind that I had to go through, I went through it while making the film. After you’ve made the film, you’ve done it, you’ve done the best you can, now the pressure makes no sense, it’ll only make you die faster! Why did you choose to make this film? Because of the story. In our company we only like to make films with strong content, collaborate with talented people like Navdeep Singh (NH10 s director) because we would like to pick up scripts that the audience has an appetite for. People have liked the trailer for what it was, it was different. When I read the script first I thought that this is new and we have never done this before. So we’d like to back such films in the future as well. How hard did you find to perform the action sequences? The action is very raw, it’s designed but in a way that it looks very believable. I trained for three months before the film just to build up my stamina because I knew what lay ahead of me. We were shooting in jungles, with thorns and dust storms,w weather problems and a lot of other issues, so I had to prep myself for it. But the action is not choreographed. If two people get into a scuffle how would it look? It’s not easy to create that , its hard to perform in

reality because we ourselves are used to seeing a certain kind of action and I would get into that space and Navdeep would be like “No let’s not do that. Let’s just keep it real.” What are your expectations from the film? I just want it to be watched by many people. I think my sensibilities are very different from other people.Even the films I’ve acted in, for me the story is paramount. Ultimately, you are grabbing the attention of people for a long duration based on the story not just songs or other things. I’m confident because we have a good film in hand. Why did you sign Neil Bhoopalam for the film considering that he doesn’t have a grand filmography yet? Neil is a terrific actor. The way he approached the scenes, nobody else whom we auditioned did. That’s what’s special about him. He is a newer actor so he doesn’t have that many films but he is very good and that’s why he is in the film. Ranveer Singh was all praises for the trailer. How did you feel? It’s lovely because I’ve had a journey with Ranveer, I’ve done the maximum number of films with him. Ranbir Kapoor also liked the trailer. So when you have your co-actors appreciating your work, it’s a great feeling, it’s strengthening.

You are doing an eclectic mix of films like Dil Dhadakne Do, Bombay Velvet, so as an actor what drives you to do a film? As an actor I’m always looking for something new, something different. I don’t want to do the same thing, it’s very boring. As a producer now I have the option of making something different which people haven’t seen before so I think its bound to be liked. Even in my roles, I’ve tried to be different each time, with PK, NH10 and soon Bombay Velvet, you’ve me in a different way which is very exciting for me as an actor. As a producer I’m always going to back good content-driven films though not necessary that I have to act in all those films. In your next film, will you cast an established star or will you seek new talent? I believe in collaborating with newer talent. But if it requires an established star, we will go for that. Do you see yourself directing a film? No. Have you experienced anything violent in your personal life? I’ve not picked up a rod and hit anybody but when I was younger and I would be coming back from school, and you know one gets eve-teased and stuff like that. Guys would act cheap, flash, do things worse than cat-call, grope… One of my friends was groped once and I remember I hit the guy with a Milton bottle and then we stopped the traffic and other people came to pick him up and hit him. I have been brought up to voice my opinion and fight back.

I don’t want to compare myself to any experienced or new actor Hiba Nawab Tere Shehar Mein’s Amaya Mathur aka Hiba Nawab talks about her role, shopping in Paris, being Rajan Shahi’s lead girl and more You can easily call Hiba the Alia Bhatt of telly town. She loves her fashion but is extremely comfortable in her favourite pair of jeans and t-shirt. Working in Tere Shehar Mein, Hiba has a lot of expectations from the show. Most of Rajan Shahi’s lead actresses become synonymous and she hopes it is her turn someday. Read excerpts from the interview… How would you describe Amaya Mathur? Amaya hails from a rich family. In spite of having every luxury in the world, she lives for the smaller things that give her happiness. She shares a great bond with her family, especially her father; and calls him her superman. Even though her mother is strict and they often end up fighting, she still holds a very high position for her mother. Amaya is more of a friend than a sibling to her sisters. How long was the shoot schedule in Paris and Benaras? We shot in Paris for ten days. It was a very hectic schedule there. We’d wake up by 4 am for a 5 am call time. We’d shoot till 10 pm, until sunset. I really wanted to shop in Paris but the only time I got was forty minutes. It is the fashion capital, but I really couldn’t do much. I just managed to pick something for my mom, dad and sister. We also shot a few sequences in Benaras; it was a completely different experience. I love India; you get a very desi feel. Benaras has about 80 ghaats and I have been to almost 10-12 of them. It takes you to a very different era. You can relate to it. The food in Benaras was also mind blowing. I am a complete foodie in fact people call me aloo. Is it tough being Rajan Shahi’s lead girl? Well I wouldn’t say it is easy, but I am doing what is expected of me. I have a lot of expectations from Amaya Mathur and everyone expects a lot from me too. In fact, Rajan sir for a fact has huge expectations from me and hope I’m able to meet it. In most Rajan Shahi soaps, the lead actress becomes more popular than the show. Do you feel the pressure of being compared with the likes of Hina Khan and Deepika Singh? I don’t want to compare myself with anyone. They’ve all been working in a very different genre from mine. They are much more experienced than me so I don’t want to compare myself with them, actually I don’t want to compare myself with any newcomer either. I don’t think there is any pressure on me as yet. I am here to perform and that’s the only thing on my mind. You managed to woo the youth with your previous show Crazy Stupid Ishq, will you be able to weave the same magic with Tere Shehar Mein? It is a Star Plus show and it is for all kinds of audiences. Tere Shehar Mein is a complete package we’ge got emotions, drama, love – it has something for everyone. People will love it and I hope we get their love in return too. How have people reacted to your performance so far? My friends told me that the show looks very different and had a varied texture. It’s been shot very differently. It takes you to a different level. Everyone in my society and locality has loved it; especially my role and my equation with my father. It’s not a typical daily soap.

THE SUPERSTAR SPEAKS OUT!

Amitabh Bachchan recently completed 46 years in filmdom and we had a brief chat with the superstar about his life and times in the Hindi film industry.

Your opinion on the response for Shamitabh?

‘Shamitabh’ did not do well. It failed at the Box Office. There were a few critical ‘likes’ to the film, but the ‘dislikes’ were greater in number.

You are working with a new generation of directors? How would you rate them as compared to older directors like Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai and Mukul Anand? All the three you mention had their unique qualities as makers. I had the great fortune of working with Prakash ji and Manmohan ji in their most memorable films. They were both phenomenal directors, who knew the art of cinema and entertainment, like no other of their time. Mukul Anand was relatively younger to them, but had a great eye for visuals. Some of the work that he did was path breaking and he left a very infectious presence among those that came after. The new generation of directors are progressive, bold, innovative and in keeping with the present mood and times of the country. I enjoy their attitude and thought process ..

How does it feel to be a grandfather ? Great .. As any other Grandfather would feel !

How do you keep yourself fit?

If I am capable of breathing, I am fit !!

Will you do another season of KBC or a fiction show or a daily soap?

I am contracted to do another season of KBC, but the decision to execute it is with the Channel. There are no soaps or fiction shows on offer as of now.

Recently you turned a cricket commentator? How was that experience like? A bit overwhelming, but most enjoyable ..

You are very active on social network. What drives you write a blog and be active on twitter?

I have a very dedicated number of well wishers that connect with me each day. I respond to them as often as I can. I owe at least this much to those that show their affection and love ..

How has Mumbai city changed for you since you came to Mumbai in the sixties?

It has become greatly more populated, congested, and infra-structurally developed, but its spirit has not changed and never will ...!!

Any plans to act in more Hollywood films? No none at the moment !!

Aamir on never making compromises and how that has held him in good stead in his career

While his contemporaries — Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan — will have two releases this year, Aamir Khan’s next release will come two years after his last release. His thought: Let them do two films in one year. I will do one film in two years. But that’s not surprising. That’s how Aamir is, he follows his own path. The actor, who recently turned 50, discusses why he won’t do what everyone else is doing, why he needs to go back to nine per cent body fat for Dangal. And remembers the incident that changed his professional life forever. Tell me about your next release Dangal? It’s written and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, a writer-director who has done Bhoothnath Returns and was the co-director along with Vikas Bahl on Chillar Party. Have you seen these films? No, I have not seen either actually. I loved the script and the manner in which he narrated it. I could see that he has visualised it. What I have seen of his work is the latest KBC campaign. He also wrote those films and he directed those films and those impressed me. Dangal is based on a true story? Based on, but it’s not strictly that. It is dramatised. Are the kind of films being offered to you now, different from the ones you were offered a decade ago? I am happy with the films I am being offered, but I don’t talk about the films I am not doing. Are the films offered to me different from what I was being offered back then? Not really, no. They’re pretty much the same actually. The same means that there are a good mix of things that are offered to me. Dangal is very unusual. Some are very mainstream. Both SRK and Salman are now doing two films in a year. What are the chances we will see Aamir Khan doing that? Unlikely. I mean I did shoot Dhoom:3 and PK simultaneously for a bit, but that was because I couldn’t manage it any other way. It was not meant to be that way. But I don’t think I will do that again. I mean Dangal is taking two years to make. I am doing prep for six months. I am learningHaryanvi, I am learning wrestling. The next six months that’s all I am doing; getting ready for the role. I become the character…

I am not competing with Shah Rukh and Salman! “Aamir Khan”

Maybe if you do two small films, you can probably do two films in a year as well?

I do small films also. Taare Zameen Par was a small film. So was Dhobi Ghat. They didn’t have that kind of scale. I don’t think the scale of the film really changes, or the number of days; not for me. The amount of effort that goes into a film is identical, whether it’s a small film, big film, expensive film, not so expensive film. The effort is the same. Time taken is the same.

But your contemporaries will have so many more films in their filmography as compared to you. That doesn’t worry you?

I am not worried. The quantity has never impressed me. I have never gone for quantity. What excites me is the journey that I live through while I am doing the film. Like PK came out in December of 2014. My next release, Dangal will be out December 2016, two years later. So instead of two films in one year, I am doing one film in two years. I don’t know how to work faster. See, now for Dangal, I explained it to you. I am putting on weight, I can’t play any other role in that. Suppose another film is offered to me, I might have to lose weight for that and I have to do both together. I can’t. As for comparisons… actually, I am not competing with anyone. The fact of the matter is that I don’t think we are playing in the same stadium. Like the kind of films I choose are very different from the kind of films Salman chooses or from the kind of films Shah Rukh chooses. I am not being qualitative about it, I am just saying that that’s not my kind of cinema. I can’t get myself to do that.

Shah Rukh has the classes and Salman has his masses. What do you have?

(Smiles) I hope I have both. I don’t think about this, I like to challenge myself and I like to challenge my audience. I like to surprise myself and I like to surprise my audience. So I have not followed any set pattern, I don’t have any image. I want to do work that excites me. Each time it is something new and different, I can’t do the same thing again and again, it’s too boring for me. Each one is different, so I am not even competing with Shah Rukh and Salman. I don’t think we even belong in the same space, if you ask me.

Do you know what you will do post Dangal? No I don’t. I don’t have a film lined up.

What if someone came to you with a good script right now?

I won’t read it because I don’t want to be distracted by anything, I am very decided about this. I am happy doing what I am doing, why to waste time.

But what if the script is amazing? You can always lock it now and do it later. Because later it might not be available to you. Sometimes, that happens.. Occasionally I listen to scripts suddenly when I feel like it. But by and large, once I have got a script — like Dangal right now — I will not listen to other scripts, I am very clear about that. I might start listening to scripts sometimes in January because we start shooting in September. September-December four months we shoot. Then I have to lose weight.

Wouldn’t it have been easier to shoot those portions now and then gain weight?

I prefer to do it the other way round. I have four months in which I have to get to nine per cent body fat. Again come back to nine per cent, how I was in Dhoom 3, that’s the look. So, that’s the other part of the look. So, I’ll shoot that in May. It will take four months, January-April to get into shape. So, during that time of getting into shape and losing weight, I can’t shoot. That’s when I hear scripts, read scripts to plan for the future.

You drastically change your looks for each of your films. Do you consciously choose scripts that need you to alter your appearance and body type?

My head doesn’t work that way. So I am finding it difficult to answer this question… I am not an actor who thinks of what I want to do. It never occurs to me what I want to do. In fact, I have no plans whether I want to do an action film now or comedy, I have no such feeling. I believe that films have to happen organically. The organic way is the way a writer thinks of what he wants to say and a story comes out there. Then a director gets involved with it. Sometimes, the director is also the writer and I come in afterwards when the casting is happening and when I experience what the writer and the director have in mind, that either excites me or it doesn’t. When it excites me, I do the film and I go into a new space. I could have never thought of Dangal. I never thought of Lagaan, I didn’t think of Dil Chahta Hai, I didn’t think of 3 Idiots, I didn’t think of Taare Zameen Par. These are all films that came out of different people’s minds and I got attached to them because I got excited about them. That entire new window suddenly opens for me and I don’t know from where it’s going to open. That’s my excitement. I don’t think what I can do, I don’t think like

that. I just want to do films that I enjoy doing, that I feel excited about.

Well, you are in the position to do that now.

I am getting to that. I am really grateful for the kind of freedom I have enjoyed in doing the kind of work I believe in and the work that I want to do. I have also fought for that, but I have to also accept that there are forces which are much larger at play that I actually can’t control. So while I have fought for that freedom, at the same time I have had the privilege of having that freedom which I am very grateful for. Not everybody has that privilege.

You have earned that privilege.

No, that’s a different matter. I am saying that from the beginning… Okay, I’ll take you back a little bit because that was the turning point in my life. See my first film Qayamat Se Qayamat Takreleased in early 1988 and it became a big hit. So within the next few months, I signed eight or nine films and when the shooting of those films began and some months passed, I realised what a mess I had got

myself into. I was very unhappy with the kind of work that I was doing. I was working with people whose sensibility was very different from mine. I am not saying that it was good or bad, but I was very unhappy. I used to come home and cry. I am not exaggerating and I used to wonder what am I doing, this is not what I had planned. This is not what I had wanted. But that was also a learning experience for me. That was when my foundation was being built. That was my realisation coming from a lack of experience quickly turning into an experience. Then these films began releasing and they started bombing and the media called me a one-film wonder and rightly so. In all fairness, they weren’t wrong. It was then that I knew my following films to come were even worse…

Please continue…

So I realised the situation I was in and that I was already unhappy about doing those films. I was in a jam and at that time I swore to myself that no matter what, I was never going to do a film unless I am really happy even if it wipes me out of the industry. I still make mistakes. Films are difficult to make. Sometimes, you start with something in mind and you end up somewhere else. But I am going to be very excited and happy otherwise I am not doing the film. Anyway, my career was at its worst at that time and my films were flopping. I felt I was in quicksand, I could see myself drowning in it slowly. I was sinking and there was nothing I could do to stop it. On the one hand, I had decided I was not going to sign films, I was going to finish these, and by the time those got over, I’d have no offers, so at that time some very important thing happened.

What was that?

I got a call from Bhatt saab. He said ‘I have a script for you.’ I got maha excited and I said, ‘Thank God.’ See Bhatt saab was at his peak that time. Saransh, Arth, Naam all these films had just released. So when he called me, I said, ‘Thank God this is the one thing I needed to save myself.’ Just the announcement that I am doing a film with Bhatt saab would give me a new lease of life. I can absorb another four flops. So I went to meet him and he narrated the script to me. And I didn’t like it. I was devastated. I asked Bhatt saab, ‘Can I sleep over it?’. He said, ‘Yes, think about it, we’ll meet tomorrow evening.’ So the next evening I went to meet him. I went home and I was like, ‘What should I do?’ My logic and my practical side were telling me do the film, so what if I didn’t like the script? Just do it because that one announcement will give

your career a lease of life and then you can do other stuff that you like. But I didn’t want to break the promise that I had made to myself which was I am not going to do a film unless I was happy with it. So do I save my career, do I follow my heart? Anyway I went back to him the next day and I said ‘I am really sorry Bhatt saab, but I can’t do the film. I have to be honest with you, I didn’t like the script and who am I to tell you what a good script is and what is not. But if I am not excited, I can’t do it, that’s all I have to say and probably after this you won’t work with me. But that’s the honest truth and maybe I am making a big error right now but I have to be true to myself.’ It was very difficult for me to say that because I had seen my career disappearing in front of me. He was very sweet. He said “No, don’t worry, if you don’t feel like doing it, you should not do it”. Later on, we went on to do Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi. But what I am trying to say is, that was the turning point in my life. If I had compromised that day, my career would have been something else. I would have constantly been compromising. When at my worst, I held on to my dream. I was honest to myself, I didn’t compromise with what my heart wanted. At my worst, I did that. Later on, that one decision gave me so much strength that it made me feel ‘Chalo, I may not have a career after this, I don’t know what’s in store for me. But at least now I am finally living and working the way I want to. I am not doing something that I am not happy with.’ Thereafter, I have done films which I wanted to do. I may have still made mistakes. I may have still done films that have not turned out that well. But from then onwards, I have done films that I have believed in

I would love to play Indira Gandhi!

The Dirty Politics star wants to portray India’s first female prime minister on silver screen After starring in Dirty Politics, actress Mallika Sherawat says she would love to feature in a biopic on late prime minister Indira Gandhi. “Biopics are very challenging. I have not really thought about it but, if given a chance I would love to play Indira Gandhi,” Mallika said in reply to a query. “I really enjoyed Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, one of the best

biopics, and was very impressed by it.” Directed by KC Bokadia, Dirty Politics also features Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Anupam Kher. There were reports that Mallika had shifted her base to the US. Clarifying this, she said: “I’m very much here and have not shifted to America. I am hoping this film will open doors for me and hope directors take me seriously and offer me performance-oriented roles.

National Film Award is for talent, unlike commercial awards which are TRP driven!

That’s what Ms Ranaut said in an interview. While the Gangster actress has always stayed away from awards ceremonies, her perception regarding National Awards is bit different… Just a few days back, winners of 62nd National Film Awards were announced and Kangana Ranaut was declared the best actress for her performance in Queen. In fact, Queen was also declared the best film in the Hindi category. While the curly-haired babe is never seen at any filmi awards functions, the Tanu Weds Manu Returns heroine is thrilled to win the National Award this year. And she would also go to receive it. While talking to a new channel, the talented B-town beauty got candid and confessed that wasn’t expecting to win the prestigious trophy. Kanganasaid, “I was not anticipating this award. It came as a surprise and it’s an honour I cherish.” But what she said next was even more interesting. Well, the Krrish 3 further added, “National Film Award is for talent, unlike commercial awards, which are TRP driven and based on commercial factors, item songs, lewd jokes and affairs.” Now I am pretty sure this statement is going set tongues wagging but knowing how blunt Kangana is, her remark isn’t all that surprising at least to me.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy director Dibakar Banerjee The first question that I asked myself was ‘Why make Byomkesh?’ The Shanghai director is back with another fantastic film…

“Why?” was the question that Dibakar Banerjee asked himself while embarking on the journey of adapting Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! as the youthful, dhoti-clad crime solver in the politically volatile era of 1940s Calcutta. Something of a childhood dream, his next film is his most ambitious and yet the most difficult project. The director, who has acquired the rights to Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s all Byomkesh stories, said his biggest motivation was the curiosity surrounding the unorthodox career choice of this young man in a time when jobs were rare to come by. Despite its period setting, Dibakar believes, Byomkesh is a man of today. The director is confident that if the film succeeds, it will popularise a true-blue Indian icon as a franchise hero and bring the tradition of Bengal noir back in fashion. The director, who started his cinematic journey withKhosla Ka Ghosla and went on explore diverse contemporary problems in his subsequent projectsOye Lucky Lucky Oye, Love Sex Aur Dhokha and Shanghai, said he wanted to begin Byomkesh’s journey from his first case. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! also stars Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in principal roles. The movie, produced by Dibakar Banerjee Productions and Yash Raj Films, is set to release on April 3. Here are the excerpts from an interview during his visit:

Why begin from the beginning in Byomkesh?

I wanted to stamp it with my own interpretation. When you go from a book to film, then in the film you can introduce many things. When I and Urmi Juvekar, the scriptwriter, sat down, the first

question that we asked ourselves was ‘Why make Byomkesh?’ We realized that we wanted to make Byomkesh because we wanted to know why this young man, fresh out of college, would want to become a detective in 1940s. Why not become a clerk or choose any other profession because it is a very unorthodox choice. Sharadindu has left certain things delightfully unsaid and that’s where a filmmaker comes, between the lines. Slowly, we realized that we wanted to tell the coming-of-age story of Byomkesh, the story of how he became what he became.

You wanted to make the film for a long time. Was it difficult to hold on to the idea for so long?

I have always wanted to make it and knew that I will make it sooner or later. When you make films, you start believing in destiny a bit. No matter how hard you push, you can’t force it. There are too many variables involved for one puny human being to fathom. Films are vague; there are too many people involved, too much money and egos. One learns to be patient.

Will there be a sequel?

Well, the first one has to do well for that. What we are waiting to see is whether a film that does not have a love story and typical action, will work or not. We want to bring back the culture of detective fiction on screen after 50 years. It is a pioneering moment. Also, my secret wish is that we often watch Spiderman, Sherlock Holmes and Batman but we forget that we have many gems hidden in our own cupboards. If we make films on them, our audiences don’t need to go anywhere else. Byomkesh is an Indian icon. I want a true Indian icon to succeed.

What has changed when you wanted to make it first and now?

My experience as a director. It is a tough film in terms of the script and writing. We are reinterpreting, bringing something new. It was a tough one to pull off. You don’t have a good record of period films in India. It involved a lot of research. We shot in Kolkata for 28 days out of the 66 days and then recreated the period on our set in Mumbai. This film needed a lot of planning. We went to historians, books, architecture of that period and got the oral history from the 90-year-olds who still remember those times.

Did you add things to make it grittier?

The grittiness was there in Sharadindu’s stories. I did not have to work on that count. My aim was to bring the era of Bengal noir back visually. There was a long standing tradition of detective and crime stories since the 1920s there. They were pulp books, you could buy them cheap. They would have these amazing illustrations of a dhoti-clad hero pointing a gun and saree-clad woman swooning in his arms. There would be a vintage car in the background and a foggy Calcutta street. It was romanticism. Our poster recreates this and our film is also bringing that.

My life may be unfulfilled, but it is not unhappy!

At 52, SLB looks back at a long and self-admittedly loveless life and a career he’s proud of He turned 52 last month. And Sanjay Leela Bhansali seems quite satisfied with the years gone by. It was a working birthday for SLB, who says, “I feel I am at that stage of life when all my hard work, all the knowledge and experiences I’ve gathered over the years have come to fruition. I feel more fulfilled and complete today than I did when I was 40.” He is far more open to new ideas now. “I am more adventurous now. I am more fearless as an artiste. I am working with various kinds of talent. I directed an opera in Paris in 2008. Now I want to do more of the things that I can do if I have a team around me. Today, I am working far harder than I did five years ago. I put in nearly 20 hours every day. And I am enjoying every bit of it.” Birthdays per se are meaningless to the Bajirao Mastani director. “As children, my sister and I had no birthday parties. We would take a packet of sweets to school and distribute it to our classmates. That was it. We never had birthday parties. Nor were we allowed to go to parties. Now, it has become a habit to be on my own on my birthday. And I am very happy that way.” He is at peace with his single status. “There were relationships that didn’t work out. I am basically a nomadic loner. I have chosen the life I lead. And I am not capable of moving ahead with the baggage of a relationship.” As a child, he saw relationships crumble around him. That influenced him. “Every individual is a sum-total of his past experiences. I’ve seen relationships traumatise people. Maybe that’s why I am wary of them,” he says. That being said, he’d change nothing in his life, given the chance. “Nothing at all. All the pain, suffering, love, passion and conflict have made me what I am. I make passionate love stories because I don’t have love in my life. My art completes my life. My life may be unfulfilled. But it isn’t unhappy.” Self-realisation is why he makes movies. He says, “I make them for selfish reasons. When I make a film about a physically challenged person I come away with so much. I learn to value what I have. My survival instinct sharpened after Black and Guzaarish.” At heart, though, SLB remains a recluse. “I’m petrified of facing the camera. Even to shoot for a photograph is an ordeal. But it’s important to break free of your inhibitions at some point in your life. As long as what you do reaches out to people, I don’t think there’s any reason to stop yourself from doing anything.”

Censor board is behaving like the Taliban! Vishal Bhardwaj

The National Award winning filmmaker has reacted strongly to diktats on film content. Here’s what he has to say… His unabashed use of abuses and rustic lingo in his films has always added to the power of his cinema. National Award winning filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has reacted strongly to diktats on film content, saying that the Central Board of Film Certification is behaving like the Taliban and that the body should be “chopped off”. In an interview, the multi-talented Bhardwaj – a writer, singer, composer, director and producer – spoke uninhibitedly about the curb on filmmakers’ creativity. The debate on censorship guidelines has been on for a long time, but it was a list of cuss words to be banned from films – as suggested by the CBFC under filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani’s chairmanship – that added fuel to the fire. Bhardwaj says that while Indian films are “moving towards international recognition”, the government should exercise a limit on the CBFC’s power to curb the “art form” that is cinema. Excerpts from the interview: Do you feel that Indian cinema is getting recognised globally? Yes, we are really moving towards international recognition… We are in the best of times at the moment. The line between commercial and arthouse cinema has blurred. Today we have films like ‘The Lunchbox’ and ‘Badlapur’ doing such great business… we have audience for each and every kind of film. But hasn’t Bollywood become stereotypical in its scripts? The whole cinema should not be called stereotyped. Stories of films like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Haider’ are totally different and unique from what we have seen till now. In fact, we are breaking the stereotype image of our cinema.

But, if we talk about commercial cinema, that will remain stereotyped. The Indian entertainment industry has been facing a backlash for its content — whether it’s the AIB Roast, Aamir Khan’s PK controversy or the CBFC’s announcement regarding the words that should be omitted from films. Don’t you feel Indian filmmakers are being dominated? It’s really sad what is happening right now. The Censor Board is behaving like a Taliban. They should be censored and chopped. They censor our films, they should be chopped first. They should know their limits…it’s (film is) an art form. They should be restricted by the government, and I hope that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry realises soon that film is a form of art. They are not only about ‘gaana-bajaana’ and ‘nautanki’. That I&B ministry has to understand…their (the censor’s) scissors should be snatched away and thrown into a valley. But don’t abuses in films have a negative effect on the audience? Why? When you use an abuse on the road, won’t that have a negative effect on you? A film is the mirror of the reality and not vice versa. A film doesn’t create reality, it just reflects reality. Either the government makes a rule that people shouldn’t abuse on road. Then we will feel that the government wants to change the character of the nation. If the government really wants to make a change, then they should consider abusing behind the camera as a crime too. The society should change, not films, because filmmakers only show what all is happening in the society. If we make a film on Kabir (poet), will people start speaking couplets on the road? If not, then how will they start abusing after watching films? We have a culture and society where people abuse on roads…we have a style…when two friends meet, even they abuse each other…So now, are we going to make an Afghanistan out of India, or what (with the Censor Board’s diktats)?

I do feel I get typecast as the village belle, says Nandita

The pretty lass spilt some beans about her upcoming films and her journey in the industry so far She started her career in the Tamil film industry with a big bang with Attakathi. Today, she’s popularly known as ‘Attakathi Nandita’ and has worked in numerous films that have been appreciated by critics and audience alike. Her performances have been applauded and she stole the audience’s hearts as Poornima, Valli, Kumudha and Kalaivani. Hailing from BangaloreNandita, says she’s in happy space today in Kollywood and is looking forward to her upcoming films. Here are excerpts from an exclusive interview: You started your career in Tamil with Attakathi and went on to good films like Mundasupatti and Ethir Neechal. Are you happy with where you are today? Yes, of course. Because the Tamil film industry has given me respect and offered me good roles and good movies. There will be no complete fulfilment in any artist’s life and it’s the same in my case. I want to do more roles and I’m happy for what I have achieved so far here. You’re talented but do you think you are getting typecast in conservative, village and girl-next-door roles? Sometimes I do feel this but I’m happy to get such roles as well. And all my roles have given me lot of homework. (Laughs) I have definitely learnt a lot of things including Tamil! Tell us about Radha Mohan’s Uppu Karvadu. It is his first comedy film. Oh, there are a lot of things to talk about as this is my favourite movie! I just completed my portions in the film today. I enjoyed each and every moment of the shoot. Uppu Karvadu will definitely break that village girl image and people will be able to see Nandita’s other face in acting. I must thank director Radha Mohan for this role. I’m hoping for the best. I’m looking forward to the film this year. Is comedy your forte? (Laughs) Nothing like that! Cinema is entertainment. People come to the theatre to get some relief. As an artist, I have to make them laugh. That’s why my first preference is comedy scripts. At the same time, I am also getting a lot of comedy subjects. (Grins) What are some of the other films you’re doing? I have Idam Porul Eval produced by Thirupathi Brothers and directed by Seenu Ramaswamy with Vijay Sethupathy as the hero. I’m doing Anjala with Vimal where I play a Madurai girl. I have completed an untitled project with Bharat Bala’s associate director Rajshekar. This is a love story. And I’ve just finished the first schedule of a horror film with Mirchi Shiva. This is yet to be titled. What are the kind of roles you’d like to do in future? I am happy with all the roles I have done so far. I’m not expecting anything. I’m a director’s actress and I want to make sure I bring their characters to life the way they perceive them on screen. At the same time, I want praise and appreciation for my acting from the audience and my fans.

Are Sidharth Malhotra and Kriti Sanon working together in a film? The two actors have come together, but is it for a film? Bollywood actors Sidharth Malhotra and Kriti Sanon, ambassadors of American Swan, have teamed up to dance in a music anthem for the online fashion brand. Sharing screen space for the first time, the two also share a crackling chemistry in the ASIAM video, which is a reflection of the trendy and youthful spirit of the brand. The video also captures all elements that can appeal most to the youth — catchy lyrics, foot-tapping beats, fun dance moves and lots of style. Besides the lead pair, the video also boasts of other major Bollywood tie-ups. The song is composed by Meet Bros Anjjan of Baby Doll fame, and it is sung by Benny Dayal, who has belted out hits like Badtameez Dil. The video has been directed and choreographed by Remo D’Souza, who has come up with a signature dance step for it. Talking about the ASIAM music anthem, Sidharth said: “What excited me most was the interesting concept of the anthem that American Swan came up with. It was great fun matching steps with Remo and, of course, being paired with Kriti, who is a fabulous dancer herself.” Kriti also enjoyed the “fun idea and clutter-breaking format” of the video. ”I thoroughly enjoyed the ASIAM music video shoot with Sidharth who is naturally charming… The American Swan collection is young and trendy,” she said. The “ASIAM” video will be launched on all social channels first. The campaign will soon be launched through TV and print as well.

Amrita Rao’s Summer Beauty Tips For Tanned Skin and Scruffy Hair Even though summer comes every year, it’s hard not to complain about it. What with its innumerable consequences of sweat grime and the constant skin issues. Staying fresh and beautiful seems like the hardest thing, how do these celebrities look like the sun never touched them? The beautiful Amrita Rao reveals her summer mantras just for you. Scruffy hair: The most common complaint of summer time weather is the dull and lifeless hair it gives us. Though keeping your scalp clean is the way to go, if greasy hair is your problem, then maybe some baby powder to do the trick or like Amrita Rao says, “Carry a trendy hairband or a bandana with which you can quickly tie your hair”. Tanned skin and blemishes: Summertime leads to that god awful tan, something that refuses to go away, no wonder then the trick is to keep either the sun away or to simply use protection against it. A good sunscreen with high SPF is just the trick but understand not all sunscreens may be good for you, Amrita advices “Understand what skin type you are and then use good products that suit your skin.” So if you have an oily skin, go for more matte creams. Though prevention is always better, if you can afford to avoid the sun, it’s the perfect solution and Amrita’s way to go in summers as she says, “ I chill in summers by spending time indoors, I avoid walking in the sun even if it’s shopping, I would go to a malls, even if it is outside the country.” Scorched and Parched: It’s important to stay hydrated. All that sweating can make your water levels fall drastically leading to dull skin, parched throat and rising body temperature. It’s important to maintain your cool and your favourite drink should be the good ole H2O as Amrita reveals, “Have lots of water and wear appropriate clothes that protects you from the sun. My favourite thing to eat in the summer would be a lot of cucumber slices, lime juice or coconut water would be good.” That should keep you fresh and cool, and if all this seems hard work maybe a good escape up north might be a good idea. So get your travel itineraries in order.

Asha Negi is a tyrant, taskmaster, lazy but I find her completely endearing “Ridhi Dogra” The actress talks about her close friends Rithvik Dhanjani and Asha Negi, her stint in Khatron Ke Khiladi, Raqesh Vashisth and more

I bumped into Ridhi Dogra at the screening of Rithvik Dhanjani and Asha Begi’s Yeh Hai Aashiquiepisode. The actress had come in late as she couldn’t ignore her close friend’s request. Ridhi comes across as this person filled with live wire energy, which can be very contagious. She is very clear about what she wants in life and how to go about achieving it, which I found rather fascinating. Read excerpts from the interview.

Since we are at the special screening of Yeh Hai Aashiqui’s Rithvik-Asha episode; tell us when did you find out about them? Frankly, it came as a surprise to me when Nach Baliye began. I had no clue until then.

Considering you know Asha from before, did your perception about her change during Khatron Ke Khiladi 6? I loved Asha during Nach Baliye itself. I used find her cute since then. She was mad, full of energy and very real. After Nach Baliye we went to Dubai for an event, we spent a lot of time together. That’s where I got to know them more closely and

they seemed so chilled out and real. That’s when we really connected.

Tell us one thing that people don’t know about Rithvik and Asha.

There are a lot of things like that but how can I say it’s not my thing. I cannot break public perception. Asha will kill me. Okay Asha is a taskmaster, tyrant, very strict when she wants to be and she’s too lazy. She is like a princess. We were in South Africa, and her jacket was with me. She said she wanted it and I told her ok let’s go to the room and get it. She stopped and said no you get it. So that’s the kind of person she is. She may be cute, but she’s lazy, but I find all of it very endearing.

Who do you think was the strongest contender in Khatron Ke Khiladi?

Actually everyone was strong especially this season. I can tell you everyone’s strong points – that’s what made this bunch really great. We’ve had so much fun as we were all there to enjoy and compete with ourselves. There was no competition – that’s why we became such good friends.

What did Raqesh Vashisth say about your performance?

Raqesh loved my performance, he was happy with how far I went. Of course he claims that I could have gone much further but my day was bad. He had a lot of faith in me and was sure I could do anything.

Did you surprise yourself?

Of course, I think I surprised myself before every stunt. I never thought of doing any of those stunts, but slowly as the stunts went by I realized that it’s not that tough. It was scary but a lot of fun.

So what’s next on the plate for you career wise?

I am looking for a project, where people are committed to doing something good. I have never worked in a place where I have to do nothing more than just stand around. It should challenge me.

What is Raqesh up to these days?

Raqesh is in Hyderabad shooting for his Marathi film. He is shooting some high-octane action sequences there. But I cannot reveal much about the film

I wanted my relationship with Hansika to work The stylish actor talks about his ex-flame Hansika, his ‘so called’ rivalry with Dhanush and his future plans in a candid chat with Bollywoodlife Currently, the actor is shooting for Gautham Menon’s Achcham Enbadhu Madamaiyada and is all set to start shoot for Selvaraghavan’s untitled commercial film in May. He hasn’t had a film release for over two years which he feels bad about as he says he let down his fans. And his loyal fans have stayed with him through this time and till today have supported him and showered him with love. Simbu says his fans make him strong and as everyone knows, he speaks straight from the heart. In this exclusive interview, he gets talking to me about his career, relationships, marriage and more. Vaalu release has been pushed again. We will release Vaalu by April or May for sure. Chakravarty, the producer, is looking into this. Things will fall into place soon. You went on a spiritual trip in between. I wanted to experience that side of life as well. So I went to Hrishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath. It really got me thinking about life, who I am and what we are here for. I then came back and it took me a while to adjust back into the film world. I read a lot of books on spirituality. As for now, I still meditate but I don’t want to get into spirituality full-fledged. I think I still have a lot of time for that. (Smiles) Were you upset when the break-up with Hansika happened? We are cordial with each other. In fact, we went to Bangkok to shoot for Vaalu as well last year. The break-up happened not because of the two of us and personal issues but due to numerous other factors. I was upset because I really

wanted this relationship to work. But I also understood the issues that needed to be dealt with and I didn’t want to deal with them at that point. Despite that photo controversy, are Nayanthara and you friends today? Yes, we are. When Pandiraj narrated the script, he felt she would be the right choice for Idhu Namma Aalu. She liked the script and we did the film together. You are 30 now. Where does marriage figure in your life now? All of us are individuals and we want to live life as individuals with individual freedom. It is society that puts a lot of pressure saying you need to be married and have kids and so on. Marriage is about giving up your individual freedom and saying yes, two of us can live together as a single unit. I don’t think marriage is mandatory – I will get married when I meet the right person and I feel I should give up my individual freedom for the other person. My parents are not pressurising me to get married. They have always respected my choices. As for meeting the right person, I have left it up to the universe. Dhanush and you were earlier said to be rivals. Then you became good friends. What’s the status today? What was happening earlier is that other people created this so-called rivalry between us. Some people were telling me that he was saying nasty things about me and vice versa. So I used to just say hi whenever I bumped into him. Then I met him at a party one evening and we really got talking and that’s when we realised that he and I never had personal issues but it was other people who were creating the problems. We cleared the air and now we are good friends. We still hang out. I wish him well and he wishes me well. We know that both of us have our own place in the film industry. You have a passion for music. Are you going to be composing music for your films? No, why should I when there are professionals around me who can give me what I want? I come up with certain lyrics or rough melodies and then the music directors’ work on that for me. But my brother is composing music. Kural has done the music for my film Idhu Namma Aalu. What plans for Simbu next? Are you writing scripts? Yes, I am. In fact, I have some scripts. I think I want to direct a film next year. I’ll be acting in it as well.

It’s time for everyone to get involved in changing violent mindsets Farhan Akhtar

The Bhaag Milkha Bhaag actor on his initiative which combats gender inequality Within a decade, Farhan Akhtar has emerged as one of the strongest voices of social protest from within the film industry. His organisation MARD (Men Against Rape & Discrimination) works relentlessly towards highlighting gender inequality. He tells us why he feels every endeavour to raise social awareness about gender discrimination deserves a voice… Your organisation M.A.R.D. creates awareness about gender inequality. Do you think it actually prevents crime against women? Every initiative is important, not just by me, but by everybody, by government institutions and NGOs. We must try to alter mindsets and change unjust legislations and rehabilitate victims of sexual violence. Our efforts would yield some result. It cannot be possible that we do not make any impact. It infuriates you to hear the kind of gruesome crimes that are perpetrated against women and children. At the same time, it also provides you with an impetus to continue working in whatever way you can. It’s time for everyone to get involved to change violent mindsets through music that I am creating, the films that I do, social media, etc. We’re trying to inspire more people to work towards a better society. It’s not enough to say, ‘I agree with you’. You have to be more participative. What are you hoping to achieve? An ideal situation where we don’t pick up the newspaper or turn on the news and read about crimes against women and children. Think more celebrities need to take an initiative to educate the public on gender equality? I can’t speak for what others should or shouldn’t do. It’s not my place to comment on that. But whenever I’ve asked any of my colleagues to come forward to give out a message or to support any event, they’ve gladly done it. Everyone I’ve asked to come forward, has done so happily. Not because they are my friends, but because they share my concerns

Sushant SinghRajput The films that are being made these days want actors like me!

The PK actor is all set to comeback with another blockbuster film…

Kai Po Che! star Sushant Singh Rajput has attributed his success in Bollywood to the new-age filmmaking. The 29-year-old actor, who has also starred in Shuddh Desi Romance and Aamir Khan’s PK, has signed on to star in a biopic on Indian cricketer MS Dhoni and Shekhar Kapur’s ambitious Paani besides the upcoming Dibakar Bannejee’s sleuth drama Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!. “The change in cinema has created room for actors like me. If we were not making the films that we are right now then I would not have been excited about my work. Most probably, I would have not got a chance to do films. The films that are being made want actors like me who can change themselves with each and every film and not think about their star value or the way they are perceived,” Sushant told. The actor said bagging the films have not been a cakewalk as he had to audition for each and every one of them. YRF’s Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is Sushant’s first major release after almost a gap of one and a half years. He had a cameo in last year’s release PK. The actor, however, said he does not worry about not having back-to-back releases as he enjoys the filmmaking process more than waiting for Friday. “The main reason I am in this industry is because I want to do films. I enjoy the shoots not just the Friday. The entire journey is important to me. Obviously, as an actor I want validation, of course the feedback is important and I want people to like me. But it is not the most essential thing for me. I am not counting the number of films releasing, I am counting the kind of films I do,” he said. Having started his career from the small screen in 2008, it took Sushant some time till he finally managed to get his big break in Bollywood in 2013 with Kai Po Che!. The actor said being part of the industry is like a dream come true for him and has also brought a lot of changes in him. “It is too good to be true. I always believed in myself. I am living my dream. Initially, I used to take myself very seriously. That has somewhat gone away,” Sushant said. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! also stars Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in principal roles. The movie, produced by Dibakar Banerjee Productions and Yash Raj Films, is set to release on April 3.

She then starts her day by properly washing her face with Cetaphil face wash, followed by an application of La Prairie moisturiser, with SPF 15. As a teenager she had an acne problem. Thus, she stresses a lot on the importance of proper cleansing and toning for her skin. She swears by Dermalogica products, especially its multivitamin eye and lip defence creams. She prefers to use homemade packs, such as a honey and yogurt ones, to soothe her face. Jacqueline uses honey instead of a lip balm at times. She praises and recommends The Body Shop Vitamin E Overnight Serum-in-Oil. And, also its Drops Of Youth Serum, for smoother and fresher skin. In her handbag she always carries fruity-smelling body butter, lip butter, some hand sanitizer and a face spritzer, especially in summers. She also uses ice cubes on her cheeks and eyes. But she makes sure that they are wrapped in tissues or a thin muslin cloth, as ice cubes should not be used directly on the skin.

Jacqueline’s Makeup Regime

Well, just like her skin mantras, she loves to talk about her makeup regime too. She is quite open about the products she uses and all the prep work she does, for the love of her gorgeous skin. Take a look: Before putting on her makeup she likes to use a primer. She likes to use pore minimisers, particularly The Body Shop Tea Tree Pore Minimiser, to prep her skin. Jacqueline prefers to use BB creams over heavy foundations. She uses a MAC Compact- NC41. For her eye makeup, she uses a Bobbi Brown eye liner. She loves to wear bright lip colours in pink, peach and red.

Jacqueline’s Fitness Routine She truly believes that a fit person is a happy one! Here is her fitness mantra in a nutshell: After waking up at 7 am in the morning, she has a cup of green tea. She works out for an hour or two at home. Her fitness regime includes everything from swimming and dancing to kapalbhati. Of all forms, yoga remains her favourite, and she is known to do the perfect headstand! No matter how busy the diva gets, she makes sure to take some time out for meditation and pranayam. At the gym, she prefers to do just light weights. She also loves to sweat it out with dance classes. She also runs and swims thrice a week.

Jacqueline’s Diet Plan

When it comes to her fitness, here is the ultimate mantra that Jacqueline follows, “Take care of yourself by eating right, sleeping right and exercising regularly! These are the only rules I swear by. If you follow this religiously and use the right products, your skin and hair will thank you.” Remember, what you eat is not only reflected by your body, but by your skin as well, so indulge your body in foods that are good and healthy. Take a look at Jacqueline’s diet plan: She generally has a protein shake post-workout. She follows a macrobiotic diet plan. Her meal plan is divided into three parts- carbs, proteins and vegetables- a mix of either rice, beans or proteins, and stir fried veggies with salad.

She carries homemade nutri balls, a combination of dry fruits and seeds, and has them whenever she feels hungry. She tries to include green veggies as much as possible in her diet. She also includes sushi and salmon in her diet and avoids sugar. She prefers to keep her dinners light and eats only if she feels hungry. She also eats junk food at times. She has been quoted as saying, “Generally, I’m not too strict with my diet. If I want to eat a chocolate or a pizza, I do. Even when I cheat, I keep it healthy. Like if I want to have pizza, I’ll go to a good restaurant where you can ask for your choice of vegetables with a thin wheat crust. At times, I enjoy a bit of cake or some dessert. It’s not like it will kill you. Also, when I’m travelling, I make it a point to walk. I don’t get into a car or cab easily. So there are smart ways to stay fit.” Her entire routine can be summed up in a nutshell with a statement that Jacqueline gave to Elle India. In an interview, she said, “It is all combination of a healthy diet, and a skincare and fitness routine. The must-haves in my food basket are super foods, nuts, nut milks, quinoa, salads, green vegetables and fruits. I grew up in Bahrain where it was always scorching hot, so I used to drink a lot of coconut water to keep myself hydrated and it worked wonders for my skin as well. I now swear by it and add it to my juices and smoothies. I also keep my skin hydrated by spritzing on rose, mineral or aloe vera water.” She further adds, “I never, ever forget my daily skincare ritual, whether I’m tired or shooting. It’s especially important when you have so much make-up on your face every day. Earlier, fitness was only about losing weight, but now I’m more about pursuing a holistic approach and overall wellbeing. I alternate my fitness routine with yoga; I practise Hatha, Ashtanga or Iyengar with cardio and strength training.”

Reduce your sugar intake with these 6 expert tips!

Foods that have too much sugar can wreak havoc on your system, and it will be good for you if you swap some of the unhealthy food items with healthier alternatives. Too much sugar can lead to obesity, which in turn can lead to several other diseases. To help reduce your sugar intake, Sally Norton, weight loss consultant at Spire The Glen Hospital Bristol and founder of Vavista.com, offers a list of lower sugar food swaps,

Fresh fruit instead of fruit juice:

Fruit juice is very high on sugar and provides little nutritional value. A fresh apple contains around 2.6 teaspoons of sugar and around 50 calories whereas a 250 ml glass of apple juice contains around 6 teaspoons of sugar and 123 calories. The whole fruit contains fibre too which fills you up and is good for you in many other ways.

Homemade soup instead of tinned

A can of soup bought from a shop contains the equivalent of four teaspoons of sugar and 171 calories, whereas if you make it yourself using fresh vegetables it will be far lower in sugar and higher in nutrients. You can also avoid adding much salt which is a leading cause of heart disease.

Fruit flavoured yogurt for plain yoghurt and berries:

Fruit yogurts can contain a huge amount of sugar so it’s important that you read the Nutrition Facts panel. Don’t be fooled into thinking that low-fat varieties are healthy either as they are often higher in sugar. You are best off with plain yoghurt and some lower sugar fruit such as raspberries and blueberries.

Swap a hot chocolate for a cup of tea: A hot chocolate contains around 4.5 teaspoons

of sugar and 200 calories even before you add cream and marshmallows, whereas a cup of tea contains very little sugar and around 20 calories if you drink it with milk.

Swap an ice cream for a frozen banana: One scoop of ice cream contains around three

teaspoons of sugar and around 180 calories, whereas a banana contains fewer calories and the sugar is bound up with fibre and nutrients. Here are nine things excess sugar does to your body!

Choose cherries over chocolate: If you

fancy something sweet, try swapping a milk chocolate (260 calories and six teaspoons of sugar) for a bowl of cherries which contains just 50 calories and two teaspoons of sugar.

blunders that make you look 10 years older

Let’s admit it, most of us do not want to look old. When people guess our age, we’d prefer if they say we look 1-2 years younger than what we really are but never older than our real age. Often, certain faux pas can make us look older than what we are – here are 10 such blunders you should avoid. 1 Wearing ill-fitted clothes Many may not pay attention to what they wear but it does have an impact on how you look. You don’t have to be runway-ready at all times but wearing ill-fitted clothes can certainly age you by 5-10 years. You don’t have to wear tight, uncomfortable clothes, just the ones which fit you well. Avoid animal prints as not everyone can carry it off and do not wear too loose clothes. Take someone along when you shop for clothes and let them tell you if it suits your body type or not. 2 Sporting the wrong haircut The wrong haircut or hairstyle can also make you look like an old hag. To change this, consult a stylist who can suggest a haircut as per your face type. A few fringes on the forehead or a spiky look for men can do the trick. Also, avoid styling your hair in the same fashion every single day. Here are a few hairstyles that are easy to make in under a minute! 3 Heavy drinking and smoking Now, this habit will certainly have repercussions in the way you look. Smoking damages your skin’s collagen leading to early signs of ageing and also makes you look paler. (Here are some more ways smoking affects your beauty.) Drinking alcohol dehydrates your skin and makes it look dry and puffy.

4 Leading a sedentary lifestyle If you are someone who has a desk job which requires you to sit all day then you are likely to look older than your age. To avoid this, you need to get enough exercise so that your blood circulation is intact and also you are fitter and in a better shape. Also, sitting indoors in AC rooms throughout the day can ruin your skin and hair. Walk in sunlight for 20 minutes every morning or take a break to get some fresh air once or twice in a day. Here are some exercises for people with desk jobs. 5 Dry and dull skin People who have dry skin have an added task to keep it looking supple at all times. This is because wrinkles and fine lines are more easily visible on dry skin than on oily or normal skin. Also, dull-looking skin can make you look old and tired as there is lack of glow on the face. 6 Grey hair This is an obvious one – grey hair is an indicator of your age. These days, people have grey hair even in their 20s unlike earlier when it was in one’s 40s or 50s. You can opt for a hair colour which will hide the grey or even apply home-made hair dyes. Here are a few ways to make natural hair dyes. 7 Make-up faux pas Make-up should enhance your best features but wearing too of it can also make you look older. Too much foundation can make your face look cakey. Also, using the wrong cosmetics has the same effect. At times, make-up gets lodged in the creases of one’s face, highlighting them all the more than concealing them. For a natural look, opt forsheer make-up. 8 Dark circles Those circles below your eyes or puffy eye bags don’t just signify your lack of sleep, but also make you look much older. The good news is a few tricks can help you fade them away. The tried-andtested cucumber slice remedy works. There are also yoga asanas to help beat dark circles and if nothing works, use a concealer. 9 Extensive hair loss A head full of hair is a sign of youthfulness but due to stress and bad lifestyle habits, many youngsters are losing hair rapidly. Hair fall can definitely make one look aged unless you can carry off the bald look. You can arrest hair fall with the help of treatments and home remedies available or even rock the bald style to look your age. 10 Wrinkly fingers You may pay all the attention to your face but your hands can give your age away if your fingers are all wrinkly. Hand and foot care is equally important to look young. Make sure you either go for mani-pedi treatments at a salon or do one yourself at home regularly. Also, keep them moisturised to avoid dryness and early ageing. So avoid these 10 blunders and look youthful for a longer time.

Harrison Ford: his life and career

Timeline: carpenter, college dropout, Star Wars hero, helicopter rescue pilot, plane crash survivor Harrison Ford’s done it all The life and times of Harrison Ford July 13 1942

Harrison Ford was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Dorothy, a former radio actress and Christopher, an actor turned advertising executive.

1960-1964: the college years

Ford headed to Ripon College, Wisconsin, where he studied English and philosophy and took his first acting class. He dropped out just before graduation, and when, in 1985, the college offered him an honorary degree, he declined it.

June 18 1964: first marriage

While he was acting in summer stock with the Belfry Players, Ford married his college sweetheart, Mary Marquardt. The couple would go on to have two children, Ben and Willard, before divorcing in 1979.

June 18 1964: first marriage

While he was acting in summer stock with the Belfry Players, Ford married his college sweetheart, Mary Marquardt. The couple would go on to have two children, Ben and Willard, before divorcing in 1979.

1964: gets his trademark scar

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, we learn that Indy got the horizontal scar on his chin when he was practising throwing his whip. The true story is less dramatic: fumbling for his seat belt on the way to a job interview, Ford swerved and hit a telephone pole.

1967: first credited role A Time for Killing won Ford his first movie credit. He used the name Harrison J Ford (the J standing for nothing, as Ford doesn’t have a middle name) to avoid confusion with a silent film actor of the same name.

1968: roadie for The Doors

A brief spell as a roadie for The Doors (he’s pictured here with Jim Morrison) left Ford broken. “When it was over, I was one step away from joining a Jesuit monastery,” he said. “I thought it was cool, I thought it was hip, but I couldn’t keep up with those guys. It was too much.”

1973: American Graffiti

Ford was working as a carpenter in Hollywood when he was hired by George Lucas to make some cabinets for him. It was on this basis that Lucas decided to give Ford a small part in American Graffiti.

1977: Star Wars Four years later, it was Lucas who again served as Ford’s Hollywood advocate, giving him the role of Han Solo. Lucas had actually wavered on the casting, for a while ruling out Ford in favour of Christopher Walken. It’s said that he changed his mind when Ford happened to come by the studio to fix a door.

1979: Apocalypse Now

Ford was allowed to choose the name of his character in Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War classic: Colonel ucas is a tribute to George, the man who kickstarted his Hollywood career.

1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark Ford suffered from dysentery during the shooting of the first Indiana Jones film. During a scene shot in Cairo, Ford was supposed to take part in a long fight with a swordsman dressed in black, but asked director Steven Spielberg if they could somehow cut it short. The result was one of the most famous scenes in the movie.

1982: Blade Runner Ford clashed with director Ridley Scott during the filming of their adaptation of Philip K Dick’s short story. Their major disagreement was over whether or not Ford’s character, Rick Deckard, was himself a replicant: Scott says yes, Ford says no.

1983: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Perhaps because of his gung-ho attitude to performing stunts, Ford has suffered many injuries on set. He ruptured two of the discs in his spine by riding elephants in the Indiana Jones sequel.

1983: second marriage Melissa Mathison, Ford’s second wife, wrote ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, as well as Kundun and one section of Twilight Zone: The Movie. They had two children, Malcolm and Georgia, and divorced in 2004.

1985: Witness

Ford won his first and only Academy Award nomination for his role as a police officer going undercover in the Amish community. Were Oscar voters impressed by his carpentry skills, on show in a scene where the villagers raise a barn?

1993: The Fugitive

Another year, another accident: Ford damaged ligaments in his leg while filming a scene in The Fugitive. His character, Dr Richard Kimble, consequently has a limp.

1993: ants, spiders, butterflies As vice-chairman of Conservation International, Ford has been vocal about preserving threatened species of animals. As a result, in 1993 the arachnologist Norman Platnick named a new species of spider Calponia harrisonfordi, while in 2002, Edward O Wilson named a new ant species Pheidole harrisonfordi (pictured above). In the same year Ford was also invited to name a Tanzanian sub-species of butterfly; he chose Georgia, after his daughter.

1996: earns his wings

Ford won his pilot licence after a year of study. In Six Days, Seven Nights (1998), he actually played a pilot and shot some of the aerial sequences himself. The studio didn’t want to be held responsible for his death, and so refused to take out insurance on his behalf. Ford went ahead and got the insurance himself. He has been criticised by environmental groups for taking ‘unnecessary’ journeys in his private jet, after he told a reporter that he often flew up the coast from

his home in Santa Monica to buy a cheeseburger.

December 1996: angers Chinese authorities A leaked document from Lhasa suggested that Chinese authorities had banned Ford from visiting the country because of his support for the Dalai Lama, and his tangential involvement in the Martin Scorsese film Kundun, which was written by his then-wife Melissa Mathison.

2000: no Patriot Ford is known for being choosy about the roles he takes on. He turned down the role ultimately played by Mel Gibson in The Patriot (2000) because it was ‘too violent’; he also declined Kevin Costner’s roles in JFK (1991) and The Untouchables (1987), Russell Crowe’s role in Proof of Life (2000), Nick Nolte’s roles in Cape Fear (1991) and The Thin Red Line (1998), Warren Beatty’s role as Dick Tracy (1990), Liam Neeson’s role in Schindler’s List (1993) and George Clooney’s roles in The Perfect Storm (2000) and Syriana (2005) - the last being the one he most regrets.

2002: his biggest flop K-19: The Widowmaker was a project Ford cared deeply about - he served as the film’s executive producer as well as its star. Unfortunately the submarine thriller, which cost $100 million to make, didn’t break even, taking only $65 million at the global box office.

2003: friend to Polanski Because of the lingering problem of his 1978 flight from the USA after being accused of rape, Roman Polanski was unable to accept in person the Oscar he won for directing The Pianist. Ford, who’d worked with the Polish director in Frantic (1988) accepted it on his behalf, and delivered it to him in France later in the year.

2009: Hollywood’s highest paid actor After several quiet years, Ford reprised his role as Indiana Jones in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). He shared the profits from the film with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, and this was enough to make him the best-paid actor in Hollywood: worth $65 million, according to Forbes.

2010: marriage to Calista Flockhart Ford married Flockhart on June 15, after eight years together. The couple have one son, Liam, who was adopted by Flockhart in 2001.

March 2 2015: plane crash Ford was forced to ditch his yellow Ryan PT-22 Recruit on Penmar Golf Course, California, when the plane suffered engine failure.

2015 - and beyond

After appearances in the less-than-earth-shattering likes of Morning Glory (2010), Cowboys & Aliens (2011) and 42 (2013), Ford is slated to return to three of his most iconic roles: Han Solo, in JJ Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (Ford sits beside Abrams in the picture above), Rick Deckard in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner sequel and Indiana Jones in a rumoured fifth film.
