I Like To Go Inside The Character I Play For The Film SALMAN KHAN

Salman Khan is today what Amitabh Bachchan was during his DON days. Besides acting for more than three decades now eversince he debuted in a small role in the Faroouque Shaikh-Rekha starrer BIWI HO TO AISI, it was the stupendous success of MAINE PYAR KIYA which made him a superstar overnight. easil, the best human beig in Bollywood today, Salman Khan is the toast of the nation and even worldwide. The film BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN which has been released on 17th Juily is creating records everywhere and its business in all the 58 countries where it has been released is phenomenal. Mohan Ayyer of GLOBAL MOVIE spoke to the charming, debonair, dashing, dynamic and daring Khan - Salman Khan. Excerpts.

Aug 2015 Global Movie : 8

You play the role of Pawan Chaturvedi from a village in Kurukshetra in BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN. Comments. Yes, that’s right. Pawan is a very honest guy and is a Hanuman Ka Bhakt. He hasnt passed out his school and college as he is dull in studies. He also believes in helping others. In strange circumstances, a 6 -year old girl ,played by Harshaali Malhotra , who comes from Pakistan but lost in India, meets me and I make it a mission to rach her back home without a Passport and Visa. I was

simply touched with the script. The script is the real hero of BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN. Why are you so humble in real life ? I have struggled a lot before I got MAINE PYAR KIYA. During my struggling days, I travelled by bus, autos, bicycles, etc. I never used the Mercedes car which my father had those days. But I enjoyed my struggle and could meet lots of people. I still remember my struggling days.If people are showering so much love and affection to me, then I must always remember that stardom is temporary and I would always be the same Salman Khan even when I am not a big star. Agar main akad ke bolungaa, toh koi nahi sunne wala hain. You have showed tremendous courage in showing Pakistan in a positive manner while many films earlier havent spoken well of Pakistan ? There is one line in BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN while I am travelling in a bus in Pakistan, the conductor tells me:” Hum Dono Ke Mulkon Mein Har Insaan Aap Jaisaa Ho Jaaye To Kitna Achha Hotaa.” That sums up my message in this film. Do you take home the character you play in your films ? Oh yes, I like to go inside the character I play till the film’s shoot is entirely complete. You have worked with Bhagyashri, Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor,Manisha Koirala and even Sridevi. You have been discovering many heroines too and many feel that Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor suit you the most. Comments. Aakhir mein tu ‘ K ‘ main hee atka mere dost. Theek hain, What people say is always right. Kareena Kapoor Khan is my heroine in BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN and I have been watching her eversince she was 9 years old. I still remember she was only nine years old when she first saw me on the sets of a film and she had come wearing a nightie ! What have you told to Kareena when you were romancing her in BAJRANI BHAIJAAN ? I told her jab bhi main romance karunga toh mujhe Saifu yaad aate hain khayalon mein. She laughs.I like to see her laugh all the time ! Ramesh Taurani had wanted to make the remake of AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY with you, Arbaaz and Sohail which unfortunately did not happen. Now, he has signed you as a solo hero for one of his projects for which the script is being written. Comments. That’s a commitment to him. Let the script be ready and after I hear it , I will give the green signal to his production house and act in his film too. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 9

It is heard that Fox Star is planning to rake in Rs.500 crores in just two weeks for PREM RATN DHAN PAYO. Comments. That’s simply great to hear it. As you are from the film trade, such figures are bound to go round the minds of such trade pundits. . Watching the track record with Sooraj and me together , I think Rs. 500 crore is a possibility. More and more cinemas have to open and more mass oriented cinemas have to open for recording such a huge figure. One of your favourite distributers from Naaz Building is Dilip Dhanwani.Comments. Dilip Dhanwani worked very hard in the publicities in my starrer VEERGATI he came to meet my father who was also very happy to meet him. Dilip ji shows great enthusiasm in whichever film he releases and gave me the much required boost for this film. I like such distributers. There were lots of speculations that you are the Hero of SHUDDHI . Comments. I am very happy that Varun Dhawan is doing SHUDDI. He is the most happenning star nowadays . ABCD 2 is his fifth hit and all his previous four films made good money at the box-office. That’s incredible indeed. Are you planning to make DABANGG 3 ? Oh yes, the script work is going on. I always love to finalise the script first and as you know it coming from a script writer’s family, I always prefer to okay the script first and finalise the rest of the team. This time , I will sing two songs in this film. Many journalists like you have liked my voice in the Hangover number in KICK. Arbaaz Khan told me that you gave him 70 days for shooting action scenes in DABANGG 2. And Sajid nadiadwala said he took 75 days for the sction scenes of KICK. Why are you giving more preference and also more days for the action scenes ? After the super success of WANTED, I realised that my fans are more happy whenever I did those dare-devil stunts. So I gave a serious thought to all my films which followed later. Giving five days extra for the action scenes is always good as the films will become potential hits. Masala entertainment toh chahiye hee, and there is noting better than to see the stunts in my films these days. Imagine, in BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, I have fought with the enemies with the yoiung girl Aug 2015 Global Movie : 10

child in my shoulders too. Bahut emotionally action hai yeh, sab ko rulaa degaa.theatres mein. But then you could have rendered one more song in BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN . Comments. Things did not work out for me in my own film ! I also felt, I could have sung at least one song. But I will remember your words. One good thing about the music of BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN is that I sat in all the song sessions and also I love the way Pritam has composed the songs. The selfie number has caught the nation’s imagination, I think. Even the song in the Dargah is catching up in popularity day after day. By the time Eid comes, both these songs will become a rage, I am sure.

My father told me that he had gone to my Hindu mother and requested her to become his wife. She immediately agreed. When I came to know this, I was thrilled and there is secularism in my house. Helen Aunty is a Christian. We have all the followers of all the religion under one roof. We never discuss caste and religion of people or even the journalists. One thing which I strictly follow nowadays is that whenever I talk, I want to know to whom I am talking to and I am very lucky that you have come to meet me. I can open up very easily when I see you as many years have passed down the lane and we are still together chatting so much.

Have you been depressed any time in your career ? Not at all. On the contrary, I always keep a cheerful face wherever I go. I recall one incident when I was a strugglling actor waiting for my first break. I had gone to Natraj Studios and met my prospective producer who was waiting for the director to arrive. But when he met me, he told me that Hemant Birje was signed for the role ! I wondered if the director would come back to me and telling me that he has changed his mind. To my horror,. the director came late night to meet me and he had the audacity to show the cheque in my name but was feeling sad that he couldnt give it to me as his elder brother thought I was the wrong choice. But even today, I meet the same director and wish him good luck and keep on telling him :” Arre , ab toh mujhe sign kar sakte ho.” (Laughs).

You have been eagerly watched by many politicians and you also lend your support to them . Comments. I thoroughly enjoyed flying kites with our beloved PM and also I am close to Baba Siddique. Also, I admire Raj Thackerey Ji very much. We actors are soft targets. We do everything for the Politicians. we get the crowds too. Most of the actors who stood for the elections have won the elections. This is the power of Cinema. Is we are seen regularly, our fans make us the super heroes. When they go vote , they put the ‘thappa’ on the face of the heroes and also the heroines. So we actors are always more popular than the politicians. Log hum actors ko jab vote dete hain, toh yeh yaad nahi karte ki ye kaunsi jaat ka hai ya kis khaandaan se aaya hain. Actors have the advantage of being human for their voters . After all, the candidate who wins the elections is also a real hero for the people.

When you became a successful star what was the first thing which came to your mind ? The success of my films halted my failures. I felt very happy when Sooraj Barjatya offered me his second film HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN after MAINE PYAR KIYA. I was very thrilled when Sajid Nadiadwala repeated me in so many of his films.

You are becoming more softer and softer after day after day. Comments. I always tell every one to shun hatred. If I talk negative things about the world and everything else, then its of no use to any one. But if I say positive things about everything, then I have a chance to become a genuine friend too. I like to be friends to all.

Do you remember one good thing your father has told you ?

What is that one thing which you hate the most these days ? Aug 2015 Global Movie : 11

The ticket rates in the multiplexes. Its too high and unaffordable for the masses who are my fans and they wont be able to afford the high ticket rates in the multiplexes. What makes you feel that you are the real BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN ? That’s a gem of a question. Well, the real Bajrangi Bhaijaan is the one who is me and he goes to the Hanumna Ji Ka Mandir in Danda and prays very hard to make BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN a bigger success than all my previous hits as the film industry needs it more than me. I hope the real Hanumanjee has heard my prayers.. You show extra fondness for kids and this time in BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN you have a girl child who plays a major role too. Comments. This girl is too brilliant. Ek namuna pesh karta hun: She came to me on the first day of shooting and said:” Bhai mujhe aap ke jaise superstar banna hain is film mein. I told her: “Pehle main superstar toh ban jaaoon phir tujhe bhi banaaoonga.” You have been supporting younger talent nowadays. You are introducing Aditya Pancholi’s son Suraj Pancholi and Suniel Shetty’s daughter Athiya Shetty in HERO, the remake of Subhash Ghai’s 30 year old film. Comments. When I saw myself in MAINE PYAR KIYA, I was very fresh and director Sooraj Barjatya had laid his bet on me. The film was a super hit. If Sooraj had not supported me, I wouldnt have been such a big star with a great fan following. Now, the same thing I am doing to promote new talent as I think Bollywood films need at least a dozen more heroes and heroines who are extremely talented and can deliver their best. Years ago, Sooraj (Barjatya ) supported me. Now, it is my turn to support Suraj (Pancholi). Also, Athiya Shetty is a good heroine and she has put lots of her own inputs in her role in HERO and she is very brilliant. Director Nikhil Advani has directed HERO with utmost care. I have noticed that love stories have always clicked. Be it BOBBY,BETAAB,LOVE STORY, Subhash Ghai’s HERO ( whose Rights I have taken to remake), EK DUUJE KE LIYE, MAINE PYAR KIYA,ISHAQZAADE etc. All these films had a fresh romantic pair and they became phenomenal hits. I hope, HERO turns out tb a big hit too. I think, it will as the film has a youth connect and the youngsters between the age of 15 to 30 like to rush to the cinema halls to watch such films. Saif Ali Khan confirmed for Before I Go To Sleep remake! The Cocktail actor wants to do only intense roles now and this will mark the beginning of the same… Getting inspired from Hollywood isn’t a new thing in Bollywood. We love to have a motivation some to follow. Sometimes we get inspired the right way, sometimes it goes horribly wrong but we continue to be motivated. But these days we do it through proper channels. No blatant rip-off but an official remake. Soon to join the fad will be Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth starrer Before I Go To Sleep. Vipul Shah and Bhushan Kumar have signed Saif Ali Khan for the Hindi remake of the same.

Now it isn’t clear if Saif will reprise Firth’s role or Mark Strong’s who play Dr. Nash in the film. But according to a daily, he has given his nod to the film as he wants to do characters that suit his personality. The film will go on the floors this September and will release mid next year.

Before I Go To Sleep is a story about a woman who is suffering from anterograde amnesia after a fatal accident which makes her unable to form new memories. So every day she gets acquainted with her husband and her life through a video log that her doctor had asked her to keep. But more she discovers about her past, more she gets terrified. I want to do something in the dark comedy space on television! “Alia Bhatt

Aug 2015 Global Movie :14

Seems like the co-curator of Colors Infinity is open to doing television just like her mentor Karan Johar Alia Bhatt is a keenly watched and followed Bollywood actress, who’s playing her cards very well. She’s always well turned out, she’s very good with the press and the photographers, and fans lap up anything about her. It’s a little curious to see this kind of celebrity status come to someone barely a few films old, but there’s no denying she knows what she’s doing and is making all the right moves at the right time. She, along with mentor and friend Karan Johar, were recently announced as co-curators of content for an upcoming English GEC, Colors Infinity. As something of a sceptic, one was pleasantly surprised to find her honest, prompt, decisive and not shying away from any question thrown her way… What kind of show would interest you enough to work on television? Something in the dark comedy space. Comedies are a difficult to be part of, but dark comedies are intriguing and edge-of-the-seat at the same time, but not that much that you’re bogged down by the stress of it. Definitely, something in the Orange Is The New Black space. You’re co-curator along with Karan Johar, who’s also doing two shows for Colors. Are you here at his recommendation? I’d like to believe the channel has a mind of its own. That they didn’t appoint me because of a recommendation.

What are you bringing to the table? It’s a big responsibility. I bring the channel nothing technical and I don’t know that much about television. But I’m a representative of the youth. And possibly the youngest actor in the industry. I think I’m a reference point. I think they assume the youth will like what I like. As a curator, they’re looking at the creativity I can bring. What we can bring in terms of international content. Like reality television for example. I’ll be like, let’s do something like Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Or let’s include something like Impractical Jokers. It’s up to them to accept it or not. Like sci-fi shows are big with the youth, so I said, let’s put in The Flash. What got you hooked to the concept? The idea of having a variety of televison shows. It’s a huge medium, we know that. Our lives always revolve around Indian TV so much, we’ve lost out on international content. As actors from the film industry, we also have to be aware of television. I particularly like the variety of content and that they’ll be airing news shows, three episodes backto-back. Not too much, put something you can pace out, like a good book, consume how much you want to. I think we’re calling it essential viewing and not binge-watching. In your house, where’s the TV? Bedroom. Living room has no television. You have to sit there and talk Aug 2015 Global Movie : 15

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is on Cloud Nine these days. Every Tom, Dick and Harry wants to sign him. He is the toast of the nation with his incredible performance of the Pakistani small time Tv journalist who helps Bajrangi Bhaijaan to help in his mission of reaching a dumb girl, just 6 years old , to her home in Pakistan from India and that too without a Passport and Visa. Mohan Ayyer of GLOBAL MOVIE met the mercurial actor at Mehboob Studios recently and found him very down-toearth person who likes to enjoy every moment of life as it comes.Excerpts. People still remember your comic villainy in KICK which even prompted Salman Khan to imitate you in one of your remarkable scenes. Comments. When I was told that I will be doing the villain’s role in KICK with a comic touch, I was very serious and thinking about the unusual character which I ultimately managed to play. But I was very thrilled to see the reaction coming from the audiences in the cinema halls. I never believed I could connect so easily and so instantly with the audiences which happened in KICK.

“ I Never Believed I Could Connect So easily And So Instantly With The Audiences” “NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI” Aug 2015 Global Movie : 16

Recently one of your old starrers LATEEF-AN UNTOLD FACT had got released. Comments. I played the role of a drug addict in this film. The producer-director Israr Ahmed worked very hard to make it a gripping film and he was a one man show. I am very happy to get title roles to play and although I was a minus character, the audiences felt that I could do any type of role which I take it as a complement. It is said that you were the choice of Kabir Khan , director of BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, to play the role of Pakistani TV Reporter Chand Nawab. Comments. Oh yes. Kabir Khan asked me to play the role of this most important male character after the role of Bajrangi Bhaijaan which was played by Salman

Khan. I accepted it with all my humility as who does not want to work in a Salman Khan starrer ? How do you rate Salman Khan on the sets . Also, how was the experience whil shooting with the loittle girl Harshaali Malhotra ? Salman Bhai is always very warm and big hearted person. he likes to keep us in high spirits while we werent shooting. But only when Harshaali was in a good mood, she would deliver her best. She would always shock us with her fantastic performance on the set itself. When she went off-mood, Salman Bhai and I would wait for several hours for her to get back in the rhythm.Kabir Khan was always on is toes and would pacify her if anyhting would go wrong.Harshaali became the darling of the entire unit as the shooting progressed and both Salman Bhai and I knew that a dynamo was acting alongwith us all the time. This little wonder child Harshaali is surely going to be a top heroine one day. Your daughter Shora was unhappy when she saw Salman Khan throwing you in your death scene in KICK. Comments. Yes, she told me to take her to Salman Bhai. When she met him, she told him very confidently: Salman Bhai, aap mere dost banenge. When Salman Bhai lifted her up,his eyes became moist. This is what I call Being Human. Salman Bhai likes children and he takes extra care of them.I can see his tremendous affection for all of us. What is your next film after BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN ? MOUNTAIN MAN which is all set for release on 21st August. This film is a daringly different one. I play the role of Dasrath Majhi from Gaya in Bihar whose wife falls from this huge mountain and dies. Then I makeit a mission tobreak this huge mountain. It took Manjhi all of 22 years to break through the mountain. My role in this film was difficult, most challenging and the toughest; also I will rate this as my best role till date.I also play a very interesting role in the Shahrukh Khan starrer RAEES. Your son was also born on your birthday-19th May. That was a coincidence. You have named him Yanni. Comments. 18th May was the last day of my shooting for BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN and I was back in Mumbai on 19th May. Around 10 a.m., I got a call that I have become a father of a son and I immediately named him Yanni. Everybody knows who is Yanni. Also the number 19 has no opposition as per a top numerologist.I have always been listening to Yanni and now Aug 2015 Global Movie : 17

I have Yanni at my home. I am a great lover of music. I have this fancy of listening to the background score of great movies like GONE WITH THE WIND, BENHUR,Alfred Hitchcock’s films, etc. I have the stock on my pen drive and keep on listening to them while I am travelling. I also listen to songs of Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh in my spare time. You took a great fancy for Buddhadeb das Gupta’s film. Comments. I had heard over 175 scripts in the last one and a half years but I wasnt impressed at all. I did like the one which ‘ Buddhadeb as Gupta narrated to me and I accepted and accepted his film titled ANWAR KA AJAB KISSA. How are you managing this sudden adulation from the film industry as you must be getting calls from all types of filmmakers. Comments. I was shooting for Sanjay Sharma’s BLACK CURRENCY in Madh Island and I received eight calls in ten minutes. I told them to send sms messages as I was busy enacting my scenes. You will not believe, I got more than 50 sms messages from various filmmakers in just 15 hours. They want to narrate their subjects to me. I find this sudden adulation too daunting but I dont bother much. I like to work hard and have been asking my makers to give me performance-driven scripts. You were initially shocked when you were told that Bipasha Basu was your heroine in AATMA . Comments. I have acted in films like BLACK FRIDAY,PEEPLI LIVE,DHOBI GHAAT, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR etc. and you know there was no wellknown heroines opposite me. When I was told that Bipasha Basu is my heroine, it was my happiest day of my life. Your struggle to reach the top is very touching as nobody in your family thought you will become an actor. Comments. I come from a farmer’s family in Budhana, 40 kms away from Muzaffarpur, U.P.There wasnt much scope for education. But we all managed to study . Just three things worked in my village viz.ganna(sugarcane),gehu(wheat) and Aug 2015 Global Movie : 18

Gun.The fear of the gun culture made our family to move out of the village. I worked as a chemist in Baroda. I later went to Delhi and joined the NSD. I was approached by Anurag Kashyap for BLACK FRIDAY. Those days I used to stay at Behram Baug,Jogeshwari. On the day of its trial show, I had a pager with me and was travelling to Nehru Centre in a bus. Anurag Kashyap texed me that the film has been banned and please return back home. I knew that many times struggling actors get rejected even after getting selected which had happened to me too. Here, a complete film was rejected by the authorities who thought the film was not fit for public viewing !

and a very well read person too. What would you like to say about your tremendous rise as an actor ? I only focus on my scenes and pour away all my energies into the shot. Sometimes the claps are more and sometimes less when the whole unit watches me enact my scenes. I always believe in one thing: Be The Best Of Whatever You Are !

Do you think that your role in TALAASH was the turning point for your career ? My role did the trick. I used to watch many robbers, pick-pocketeers, chain-snatchers running from my area where I stayed in Behram Baug and I copied one particular robber’s style in TALAASH. This robber was very confident in whatever he was doing and I did the same for TALAASH. Even in the chase scene near the raillway station, I did each and every shot myself. I think, an actor should put his life and soul in whatever he has got to do and this helped me to gain instant recognition in TALAASH. You give that extra edge of perfection which actors like Aamir Khan do it so magnificently on the big screen. Comments. Aamir Khan gives lots of respect to his actors and also to people whom he is close with . He manages to excite you and also inspire you. He has something in him which I like immensely and hence I follow whatever he says to me. I think all actors love to to get special attention from a great star like Aamir Khan. How was it working with Bipasha Basu for a film like AATMA were there is more of supernatural things, ghost, horror and chills ? I think AATMA will be known more for the emotional connect which I have for my daughter and my wife, played by Bipasha Basu. I played Bipasha basu’s husban in AATMA. I was thrilled to play my role in AATMA and that too opposite Bipasha basu who has so far worked with too many hansome stars, heroes throughout her career. I was initially shocked that she accepted me as her husband in AATMA !.Even the promotional activities of AATMA kickstarted with Bipasha Basu and me giving interviews to the media together. She is extremely a warm hearted lady Aug 2015 Global Movie : 19

Why Kriti Sanon doesn’t regret the gap between her debut flick and the second one Sajid Nadiadwala’s protégé and one of Shah Rukh Khan’s co-stars in Rohit Shetty’s ensemble entertainer Dilwale, Kriti Sanon is making the right moves. While Heropanti released in May last year, Dilwale releases this December, almost a year and a half later. But she doesn’t regret the gap. Instead, she says she’s game for music videos to stay fresh in the audience’s minds. In a candid chat, Kriti opens up about working with Tiger for the second time for Chal Wahaan Jaate Hai… You and Tiger made your debut together. But back then, you must not have known how the industry works. (Cuts in) I still don’t know how the industry works. But now, you have a better idea? Yes, that has definitely happened. Now I know the camera angles. I am still a newcomer on sets but at least now I have an idea of what I have to and what I should do.

I haven’t reached the stage where I can actually call it stardom “Kriti Sanon” Aug 2015 Global Movie : 20

How different was it working with Tiger again; this time for the music video? I won’t say it was different. Rather, it was very nostalgic. Especially after working in a film together, you kind of know how the other person is going to react, whenever you are doing the scenes or the other montages. I just felt that he, as an actor, was much more confident. That happens when you don’t have the fear of getting accepted with the audience anymore. With your debut film, you are a little scared of how people are going to react. What I am doing, am I doing it right? It’s the same with me as well. We share this special bond, we understand each other and feel for each other. It almost felt like

shooting a song in Heropanti 2. Music videos were really popular few years back… Yes, definitely. There used to be pop albums. I remember Viva, Aasma and Band Of Boys being there. But it’s long gone. So do you think the music videos made by Ahmed Khan will revive the trend on digital platforms? I hope it does. Music is something which everyone enjoys. You can never have enough of music. You can’t get tired of music. I have never heard someone saying that, ‘Oh, I have a good enough playlist for life.’ We keep adding songs to our playlist, right? In India, we really love music so these singles should keep coming. It is also a way of connecting with your audiences. Movies take a lot of time to get filmed and to release. Heropanti released over a year ago. And now my next film will come only in December. So I think this is a nice way of staying connected with the audience. Also, you can just shoot for the music video for three days! Do you regret the long gap between your first and second film? I don’t really regret it at all. It’s always time for your second film. Always. People wait for your first film to release, to see the response. And I am from a non-film background. So nobody knew who I was. It took me a lot of time even after Heropanti released to show myself out to

people to make them realize that there’s someone called Kriti Sanon now existing in the industry. A lot of people sign their second projects in a hurry and regret it later. I was always very sure that I wanted to do a good film, which would be a notch higher than my debut film. Dilwale is the perfect opportunity and I am glad I waited for it. Today, films with tragic endings have started doing really well… Yes, there’s Aashiqui 2, Ishaqzaade and Ek Villain which have been amazing films to watch. Do you want to do a film with a tragic ending? No, I am more of a happy endings person. I really want to walk out of a theatre, feeling very happy. Personally, when you are watching two lovers on screen, you want them to end up together. You want hope and I am one of those people. For me, I don’t like tragic endings much. Have you started taking your stardom seriously now? I really don’t think I have reached a stage where I can actually call it stardom. I am just one film old and I don’t think that so many people would know me. There’s absolutely nothing that I have offered to them yet. One film is definitely not enough to show what you can do. Unless you are Hrithik Roshan. He did everything pretty much in his first film. So there’s so much more to do, so much for me to learn. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 21

Deepika Padukone reveals why Sanjay Leela Bhansali was upset about her bonding with Priyanka Chopra! When two heroines work together, there obviously is curiosity and excitement for the fans and insecurity and doubt between the two leading ladies. This year, the coming together of Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in Bajirao Mastani has been a hot subject of debate ever since the film’s announcement. The BM teaser will be launched this week. As good a time as any to get Deepika to talk about her rivalry (or rather revelry?) with the competition… Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh got a joint narration for Gunday. Did Priyanka and you ask for one as well? No, because Sanjay (Bhansali) doesn’t work like that. He prefers dealing with each actor individually. But as far as the film is concerned, I think we are all definitely on the same page. Isn’t it important to know what the role of your co-actor in the film is? It’s really irrelevant. When the film is out, I think it will be there for everyone to see. The priority should be the film. I have never gotten into the length of any of my co-stars’ roles. But isn’t it better to be clear about who is playing what part? I have never asked for a joint narration ever. The last conversation I had with Sanjay was when he signed me as Mastani Aug 2015 Global Movie : 22

and he told me that Priyanka was doing Kashi. I said okay. Would you have played the other role had that been offered to you? It depends, I don’t know because there are a lot of factors that come into play when you say yes to a film. What are the films that you have just done before? What head space are you in, at that point? What are the kind of films you are excited about doing? So, it would be wrong to say yes. It would not be right for me to say yes or no. Lets talk about the dance-off between you and PC. Did the thought that you two would be compared, play at the back of your mind? At least from my point of view, I wasn’t dancing to look like a good dancer ke achcha chalo ab gana aa gaya toh… Within that dance space, you are still playing the character. So much has happened to my character before I come into the song, so it’s also treated like a scene within the song. It should be more than just, ‘Okay, now let’s just watch two heroines dancing’. And of course, everyone has a different style of dancing… Most definitely, there will be people who will prefer Priyanka’s (dancing) style to mine and there will be people who prefer my style to hers. Fair enough. I don’t think, at any point, we tried to outshine or outdo each other… So it was all friendly when the song was being shot? Sanjay couldn’t handle the fact that two of us… I remember during shooting, one shot was taking very long to set up, so PC and I sat down and were chatting and giggling. Sanjay came to us and said, ‘I was wondering where you two are. I suddenly looked and from my monitor I could see both of you laughing, holding each other’s hands. Why don’t you’ll do phugdi’? In the film, I

playBajirao’s lover and she the wife. So there has to be some tension. Sanjay started complaining, ‘You two, from the van only, you start doing phugdi and come to the set.’ He is too funny. You and PC had some strange bonding over raw tomatoes during shooting? (Laughs) Yes, I made her start having raw tomatoes. I love kaccha salads like cucumber, etc, especially in the heat. So my assistant used to bring me a bowl full like freshly chopped cold tomatoes with lots of salt and chilly powder. I was eating that one day when Priyanka while walking past, looked at my bowl, said “Chee” and walked off. So, I thought okay she is one of those who doesn’t like kacha tamatar. Next day, she came on the set and said, ‘Babe, I shouldn’t have said Chee, I don’t know why I reacted like that. I actually realised that I also used to like tamatar and I haven’t eaten it for a very long time.’ So you got her hooked again? There is a very funny story to this. A few days later, we were shooting and first, she asked her boy to bring tomatoes in two bowls. We ate it. I have to give you some gory details. And you know, that juice that flows out after you cut a tamatar, that juice remains, we had that also, then we looked at each other and we weren’t satisfied. So then I sent my boy again, he brought two more bowls. At one point, when we were on the first bowl Ranveer was there — he wasn’t needed for a couple of shots — so he had left. An hour later when he came back, we were on the second bowl and he said, “When I left you two were eating. Now, I have come back and you both are still eating tomatoes, what is wrong with you?” We told him it was our third or fourth bowl…. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 23

Abhishek Bachchan: I loved Aishwarya in Jazbaa and I am sure people will love her too!

Jr Bachchan opens up about his upcoming films, his love for football and kabaddi and the possibility of his doing a film with Ash soon. Read on for excerpts… Abhishek Bachchan is quick to describe his 15 years in the film industry as a roller-coaster ride. His career has had its highs and lows and unexpected surprises, too. Here, he talks about his sporting pursuits, about career choices, the possibility of working with his wife Aishwarya and more… You own a kabaddi and a football team. Is there a bias towards a particular sport? No, their schedules are completely different. We finish kabaddi in August and football starts in October. I’m equally passionate about both. Do you think these leagues will help India prepare to be a top contender in the international arena as well? Of course. How much did you know about kabaddi before the Pro Kabaddi League last year? Now you do. Whenever I travel abroad, the number of sportsmen that have spoken to me about the game is very heartening to hear. In case of football (starting the Indian Super League), part of the

mission statement states that India, as a national squad, should be competing in the World Cup. Do you think more films will be made on kabaddi as well? What we don’t realise is that Indian cinema is not limited to Bollywood only. There were two films made last year which revolved around kabaddi and they weren’t just montage shots. They were actual films. Similarly, cricket and football are what Indians are crazy for. Hence, you see a lot of films being made on cricket and football. There was a Chak De made on hockey. Soon, I am sure there will be mainstream films made with mainstream actors with kabaddi as the central theme. Over the last few years, you have been part of ensemble casts. All is Well is a solo film after a long time. But it’s been delayed for some time now… Well, we expect the best. Reality, usually, is completely different from what we hope. We have to make do with things. We have given it our best, it’s a very sweet film. It’s a film which is close to my heart because I love the message in it. When I heard the story, I knew I wanted to be a part of this film because that’s something I wanted to say at that point of time. It had its shares of hiccups. But these things happen so you just need to move on and try and put your best foot forward. People have also started comparing it to Piku. Comment. The only similarity between Piku and All is Well is that both the films are about a road trip. And that’s it. There’s no other similarity. A sh told us that the makers are planning to revisit Happy Anniversary. Have they approached you again? No, they haven’t. At least not till now. If they do, will you take it up?

Ash and I would love to work together. I always enjoy the space of making a film with her. But it has to be something both of us agree to, individually. As far as Ash’s requirements go, it ticks all the boxes. Similarly it needs to tick mine. I won’t disrespect her ever as an artiste. I won’t do a film for the heck of it. You have to look at such things individually. You can’t look at it collectively. Did you watch the trailer of Jazbaa? The one that they released in Cannes? I did. It was more of a show reel. It wasn’t really a promo. When you go to a festival like Cannes, you don’t take the promo. What you take instead is something you call the ‘sizzle reel’. It’s just glimpses of the film. So yes, that’s what I have seen. I loved Aishwarya in the film and I am sure people will love her too. Given that there are many paradigm shifts in the industry today and you are a producer, what new thing would you like to try out? Everybody’s up with their own stuff. What’s really nice is that, with the advent of multiplexes, it has become financially more viable to make a film, which is more niche in its appeal to the audiences intended for. I have produced Piku but I don’t know if 20-30 years ago, a film like that would have ever been made. People wouldn’t have made it because they wouldn’t be able to sell it as it might not appeal to as wide an audience to as say, a hardcore masala potboiler. It’s business at the end of the day. When you have those big single screens with 900-1000seaters, a Piku is not going to be loved that much. But when a multiplex comes along, there are smaller screens which you can fill up and there’s an audience, it’s only possible to make such films. So the paradigm shift that has happened is not related to the subject matter. We have learnt how to exhibit our films now. So, the actual execution is happening at the distribution and execution. The creative field will always be that. People Aug 2015 Global Movie : 25

will be creative and they will do what they feel like doing. We talk about women centric films, they’ve always been made. We talk about family films, they’ve always been made. We talk about the big summer blockbusters. These films were always being made. We have cracked how to exhibit the films and reach the target audience. Our films are doing extremely well in international markets too. Do you think the gap is being bridged now? It’s a global market. Cinema’s becoming a global product now. I think it’s very encouraging that the films from the West are working here and our films are working there. Telugu cinema has been increasingly growing over the last 10 years. What Bahubali has done is astonishing and definitely worth it. And deservedly so. But what’s heartening to know is that our markets and our horizons are broadening. And they are also now looking at India as a very strong market. There have already been two-three films which have crossed `100 crores here which is huge for them. So, it is becoming a global product and I think what will happen in the times to come is that we will start watching films which are going to have more of a global perspective and outlook. You teamed up with Raghav and Nelly for a music video. Tell us something about it. Raghav is a friend. I remember meeting him 10-11 years ago when he had first come to India. He’s been in touch ever since then. Last year, during Diwali, he came over to my house and said, ‘Look, I am working on this track. Would you like to be a part of it?’ He was keen and of course, I wanted to work with him. He then told me that Nelly was working on it as well. Nelly is one of my favourite hip-hop artistes, so it was a golden opportunity to collaborate with him. We recorded the track and it turned out really well. Bluffmaster sequel on the cards? Riteish (Deshmukh) and I have been hounding Rohan (Sippy) for the last 10 years. But Rohan’s not the kind of director who will just announce a film because it will go through the roof. We have to back it up with a script. I am not an actor who would make an announcement for sensationalism so we’ve been trying to crack something. I won’t lie but I would love to make a sequel to Bluffmaster. Or maybe a continuing segment from where we left. Rohan’s open to the idea and has not shut the door on it. But we have to develop the right script first. Any old film you want to remake? No, I would rather make films that people want to remake later. You’ve always said you want to play Yuvraj Singh in a biopic. But if someone had to play you in a biopic, who other than you do you think will do justice to the role? I don’t think anyone can pull it off. (Smiles) In all modesty, I say that. I don’t know but that’s a good question. I should think about that. There’s no one I can think of immediately. NANDITA SINGGHA -------INDIA’S FIRST WOMAN FILMMAKER TO DIRECT AN INTERNATIONAL FILM ON INDIAN CRIME JOURNALISM How did the idea of making films with journalistic background come to you ? The broad daylight murder of J. Dey was the most shocking thing to happen. I just started probing the life of a journalist. I found that the pen of the journalist is the mist powerful. He or she who is a journalist can easily come out with a story without any fear. When you compare a journalist with a lawyer or a policeman, we find that the journalist is doing far better service to mankind.A lawyer can lie . A policeman can file an FIR which can turn out to be fabricated too. But the journalist will write his story after his own true research and then the whole society reads it and applauds it too. Here was J. Dey who was writing a book on FIVE GANGSTERS and he paid his price to the bullet . That means a real journalist’s life is totally insecure. andita Singgha is presently writing, producing and even directing four films with journalistic background. The films are 1: MID-DEY 2:J RETURNS 3: MEGA CORP and 4: RED. She has already shot 35% of the first two films MID-DEY and J. RETURNS in Delhi. Excerpts from a brief chat with Nandita at her posh office in Saki Naka,Mumbai by Mohan Ayyer.

for journalists. There is no pension scheme for journalists. Why ? Half of the courses in journalism in India have closed their shops as they say Journalism is not a paying job. I found the journalists very hardworking who write and have no regular duty hours. They even come late night to their house as they have to complete a dead line for their stories. If so much hard work a journalist can do the why is the Government not helping them to get them benefits. The same journalists have made Modi jee the Prime Minister, Kejriwal the CM of Delhi, made Anna Hazare a national Hero and all the actors owe their stardom to journalists. It is now pay back time. In my own humble way , I am glorifying and highlighting the life of a journalist and that too with the eye of a lady journalist from U.K. who is shocked to see the life and times of an Indian

journalist.I am the first woman filmmaker to direct an international film on Indian crime journalism. You come from a corporate world and you have seen the rise and rise of corporates who have taken over the media in a big way . Comments. Yes, today corporates have understood the strength of the media and are investing in a big way. The good old days of aristrocatic journalism is also coming back. Some of my old friends have been great editors too. I was a child when I had met Khushwant Singh several times. I was only 13 years old when I first won a debate and won a prize of 30,000 US dollars in Durban. Two American companies Motorolla and 3 M gave me traininjg in technology and I brought the first video conferencing in the Asia-Pacific region. I even got several international awards for years together. I then branched out to advertisement shorts and have already made more than 450 advt. shorts for the digital world. Today, I have over 20 offices world wide and have more than 8,000 employees working for my company TOTAL PRESENTATION DEVICES LIMITED. It is easy for the corporates to operate in a regularised manner. hence the corporates are making their own killing in the Bollywood film industry too. Coming back to your filmmaking journey, how has been the experience so far ? I have already made eleven films in South in all the languages i.e. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. I have even directed a Bollywood film in 2007. I was always passionate in my work and I found that technically we are now very superior, almost every big director is making good cinema but only a handful of them are really concentrating in the content of the film. I liked the way A.R..Murugudoss makes his films. He is more focussed towards the content and knows to thrill the audiences with good stories which caters to all age groups. I appreciate his style of filmmaking. Also, I adore the style of Rakeysh Om Prakash and Rajkumar Hirani. Even I will want to be known as a sensitive filmmaker who makes meaningful films with a purpose and also which has youth appeal. I have taken 37 characters who are all journalists in MID-DEY and J. RETURNS. Most of them are from NSD. It will be a hardcore commercial film too with music, songs, fights etc. You have announced your foray into Marathi and Gujarati films too. Comments. Refgional Cinema in India must also get international recognition. I am already making international films and I will surely make Marathi and Gujarati films in a big way and these films have have international standards too. I am already making RED in Gujarati language. Since J.RETURNS is a prequel to MID-DEY, then you can easily release J.RETURNS before MID-DEY . Comments. Aapne ekdum sahee pakdein hain !. I am going to complete the balance 65% shooting of J.RETURNS and then I will be releasing MID-DEY. Since the characters are same in both the films, I can easily shoot bot the films simultaneously which I have been doing and I am also very impressed with the super success of BAHUBALI. I am also planning one such huge costume drama but to be made in Hollywood for the Overseas markets.I can easily dub the film in Hindi and will be releasing for Indian markets which internationally is only 2 % of the total world business of a single film. I miss the fact that we didn’t have to do so many interviews and we were not being watched all the time!

“Tabu”

Tabu talks about being labelled “recluse”, her willingness to do more film promotions now and more… The kind of films B-Town makes has changed. And so, we’re now seeing Tabu on screen more often. In the last few years, she had shut herself out. In the last two years, we have seen her in more films than we have in a long time. Her character in Haider, Gazala is still fresh in our minds. Not many actresses her age would have agreed to play mother to Shahid Kapoor. But she did. Ahead of the release of her next, Drishyam, in which she plays a tough cop and a mother (again) Tabu explains that she has accepted her age and become more comfortable with herself and the world around her. Tired of promotions? No. For a change, this time around, I actually do like the promotions. Really? Yes, this time, I am not feeling bad promoting the film. Firstly, you are promoting it with friends. Ajay and I have been friends even before we became actors. He hasn’t changed a bit, except that he’s become a father. He gives everyone space, which is a rare quality. I guess that’s why we bond so well. He does not judge you. At least me. I can be whoever I want to be. I can abuse, I can be crazy in front of him. Secondly, Drishyam is a great film. It’s like a seamless experience which will stay with me forever. You veer towards strong women characters. Is it an extension of what you are in real life? The strong characters I play, more than being an extension of me, are an extension of what I want to be. These are characters which make me feel, ‘What if I could be her?’ But of course, you cannot always experience all those things that you see in the film. So happily and safely, you experience it through your roles. I don’t know how I am in real life because I am many things in one body. Nobody is just one thing. According to time, situations and age, we keep changing and evolving but some things remain the same. But with me, there are a lot of changes that have seeped into my personality for the past few years. From the time you started to now, the parameters of success have also changed (from 100 days to 100 crores). Comment. I just miss the fact that we didn’t have to do so many interviews and we were not being watched all the time. There was a life that we were leading and there was this life where we worked. Acting was our profession.

Aug 2015 Global Movie : 30

People could see just that, only through our films. There was a huge divide between their personal and public life. Today, there’s no such divide. Your personal life is up there for public scrutiny. You took time to get used to it… Yes, I definitely did. I am not comfortable being out in the open. I don’t know if anybody is. I think it’s really abnormal for anybody who love meeting and talking to 1 lakh people every day. You are also expending your energy interacting with so many people. You cannot do it on a daily basis. For me, it was much more demanding and challenging. Our generation was like kaam kiya aur ghar chale gaye. We could roam around and at the airport, put oil in our hair. On every flight, I used to put oil in my hair and wear the most dirty clothes and go. Now we don’t have that freedom anymore. You are always checking yourselves because there are cameras everywhere. Made peace with living life in a glass bowl now? It’s taken a lot of time but now, I think I am completely comfortable with that. I am really surprised that I have gotten so comfortable that I can actually distance myself from all this and do it as a job. I am just happy being in the moment and making sure I don’t get harrowed by it all the time. Your recent phase is being termed as yet another ‘comeback’. I don’t know why the media calls it my comeback every time. The media coins such terms: comeback, breaking the glass ceiling, game changer, torchbearer. Kya karein, ab yeh term baith jaata hai ek baar, toh bas.. recluse, this that, god knows how people have described me always. Words are not important at all. They should not be also because eventually they are just words. What matters is work and what matters to me is what I am doing. But now, you are doing more films… Yes, so that people stop calling it a comeback every time (laughs out loud) No, but on a serious note, I am doing more films because I am getting good roles. All these films came to me now. If they had come three years back, I would have said yes to it even back then. Back then, too, you must have got offers… Ya, but earlier I was not happy with the kind of films that were offered to me. I was really trying to understand what I want to prioritise. It’s impossible for me to be okay with something I am unhappy with. I know it puts a lot of pressure on everything that comes to me and also on the people around me. People keep saying, ‘It’s so difficult to convince you’. It’s difficult for me to convince myself to do something I am not quite happy about. But yes, I am not saying that the films, I said no to are bad. Mujhe kuch atak raha hai toh main nahi kar paati hoon. Even if it’s an outfit, if I am not comfortable wearing it, I won’t wear it, no matter what. I don’t know why it’s so difficult for people to understand that. People should think, ‘Usko accha nahi laga. Usne nahi kiya’. But instead, they have talked about my personality. ‘Why do you say no? Why don’t you do this?’ Again when I do it, that also becomes such a big thing. Comeback, stealing the limelight, yeh, woh, uff! But that’s a good thing I believe. Karoon bhi toh publicity, nahi karoon toh bhi publicity (Laughs). Does public perception matter to you at all then? Now, I am not at that age where it should bother me. I cannot and I don’t even want to change the perception that has already been created. There’s no need because jo hai, woh theek hai. Obviously, I won’t go out of my way to do something that will harm or tarnish my image. Thoda sa I might make an extra effort to appear okay. Then again, it changes for somebody who’s 20 and for somebody who’s 40. Abhi, if I want to wear good clothes and be comfortable in them, that’s because I like it. I want to look good, not because that’s the right way to be or because people will say she’s looking good. You live in a physical world where you have to be aware that you are being seen and noticed all the time. I wouldn’t like a 24X7 press conference in my life. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 31

The actress turned director minces no words about the machinations of Bollywood. Several filmmakers have criticised the working and viability of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but actress-filmaker Pooja Bhatt says the film industry itself has a lot of growing up to do. “The film industry is still like a child. The number of people you need to fight within your own community before you even get to that stage (the censor board) is not funny. So, I think that there is a lot of growing up that not only the censor board has to do, but first the film industry has to do,” Pooja told IANS in an interview. The CBFC has over the years faced flak for banning films like Unfreedom and for issuing diktats on film content or statutory warnings. The actress, who has always stayed ahead of time with her bold yet impactful cinema through Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Sadak, Sir, Zakhm and Tamanna, added that members of film fraternity should join hands over issues instead of concentrating on “own battles” alone. “We only fight our own battles… I think somewhere along the line, we need to kind of understand that,” added the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Pooja began her journey in the film industry as an actress with 1989 film, Daddy and later stepped into direction in 2004 with Paap. She continued to direct movies like Holiday, Dhokha,Kajraare and Jism 2, and even produced movies. In the late 1980s and 1990s, the actress-producer was considered one of the boldest of her time thanks to her controversial body paint act at the age of 17 for late fashion photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha. And that boldness transpired into her films as well. Even though bold content seems to be the order of the day in Bollywood, 43-year-old Pooja conceded that the audience was always ready for bold and experimental subjects. “When we did Jism or Sadak, people said that it won’t work. But it did and who accepted it? The audience did. The audience was always ready; it is the people making the movies who believe that they are not ready. We need to grow up,” she said. Pooja is also now ready to face the camera again. She says she will pick roles that suit her and that she won’t try to mould herself into some glossy image. “I would like to play a woman who is my age and who looks exactly like me right now. I don’t want to pretend to be a 25-year-old girl or a 32-year-old woman. And I also want to do something I have never done before — say something evil or sexual,” she added. On the production front, she is occupied with her next project Cabaret, in which Richa Chadhaplays the lead along with former cricketer S. Sreesanth.

Celeb Moms Raveena, Karishma and Malaika Share Health Diet Tips For Kids

Aug 2015 Global Movie : 34

Raveena Tandon Importance of a healthy diet

When I started working in movies, I never went on a crash diet or put myself through stress because my mother had inculcated good eating habits in me since I was a child. That’s why you’ve never heard stories about me fainting on the set of a film. I’ve done the same for my kids. Rasha and Ranbir (daughter and son) don’t touch aerated drinks. I’ve told them it’s unhealthy and they are okay with it. They know they can have it but only occasionally.

Create awareness Once in a while, if I have an aerated drink, Rasha scolds me saying it’s unhealthy. She also fears that my teeth will turn black.

Yummy nutritional food I am always concerned about the nutrition my kids are getting. So I make food which is tasty and nutritious. Generally, I serve them one interesting dish with two boring dishes. But I keep oily, fried stuff and everything that is made of maida, away from them. Personal favourites

My kids love Chinese and Indian food. Palak paneer and butter naan are their favourite foods. They enjoy Indian food at Urban Tadka in Andheri, Mumbai. For Chinese food, it alternates.

Raveena’s easy-to-implement tips for moms

Let fruit and vegetables reign in your house. Keep them washed, peeled, cut and available in plain sight such as the front of the fridge, on kitchen countertops, on the dining table, etc. Keep chips and pretzels out of sight. Better still, limit the buying of too many processed snacks. Do not solely rely on sneaking vegetables into every dish. While this may seem like a good tactic, if used regularly, it will backfire. Your kids will think of vegetables as something so awful they that need to be camouflaged. Instead, offer vegetables in various textures, colours and forms – cooked and uncooked, with and without dips. Try raw sweet bell peppers and other crunchy veggies at first. Breakfast is brain power. Few examples of a good breakfast include: yoghurt, fruit and nuts, milk and banana slices, eggs and whole grain toast, oatmeal with cinnamon and fruit. Yum! Aug 2015 Global Movie : 35

Karisma Kapoor Making food interesting

It’s important to make food interesting for children. So I’m always doing that for my daughter Samaira and son Kiaan. I cut vegetables in different kinds of shapes. Just recently, I did that with broccoli and carrots. My kids love to eat vegetables when they are cut like that because they look interesting.

Healthy habits I’ve encouraged healthy eating habits in my children right from the beginning. But I don’t deprive them of anything. So I generally treat them to junk food over the weekend. But I make sure they don’t over-indulge. Also, I keep them away from artificial flavours, coloured food and aerated drinks.

Story sessions My kids are not fussy but I definitely like them to eat healthy and be disciplined. So to make them eat uninteresting khana, I tell them stories while they are eating. At times, I even use a sweet treat like a cupcake or a donut as a reward if Samaira accomplishes something at school.

Dishes they love Though I cook a lot of interesting things for them, my kids love the dal chaawal and bhindi I make. However, they hate it when I make baingan and karela. I always get the looks when I cook it. Besides home-cooked Indian food, Samaira loves Chinese and Italian, just like me. I guess good taste runs in the family.

Karisma’s food fundas for kids

Children need to eat every three to four hours. Three meals, two snacks and lots of fluids. If you plan these, your child’s diet will be much more balanced and he or she’ll be less cranky because they won’t be famished. If your kids won’t eat vegetables, experiment with dips. They always help. The more creative the meal is, the greater the variety of food they can choose from. I often use cookie cutters to turn toast into hearts and stars, which they love.

Malaika Arora Khan Good eating habits

It’s important to develop good eating habits early on in life because they stay with you when you grow up. If you grow up with bad eating habits, you generally end up gorging on junk food, which is unhealthy. I have tried to inculcate good eating habits in my son Arhan as much as I can.

Favourite cuisine

Arhan’s favourite cuisine is South Indian and Italian. He can eat any South Indian dish and any kind of pasta. But he likes it best when I cook for him. So I try making something for him every day. There’s always a special sauce with a dish. I even try and add new ingredients to the food so that it becomes tastier.

Always innovating

Kids generally like doosron ke ghar ka khana. It’s natural. So if he has liked a particular dish at his friend’s house, I get the recipe and make it.

Restaurants Arhan loves

Arhan’s favourite restaurants are Salt Water Café, Copper Chimney and Spaghetti Kitchen in Bandra, Mumbai. I also like visiting these restaurants with Arhan because they are hygienic.

Malaika’s healthy eating practices every mother should follow Maintain regular meal times and discourage your kids from random snacking. Serve meals only at the dining table and make sure he/she doesn’t eat alone or while watching television. Always offer your child a range of healthy foods to choose from. Be aware of what your children eat outside. Discourage your children from buying unhygienic food from street stalls. Teach them to discriminate between places that are safe to buy food from and those that aren’t.

Marzi sir has stood on the table and praised us they’ve been really great. A: Chetan sir is the voice of the common people. He has

They’ve all motivated us to do better in each performance. How do you pacify Amruta when she’s upset? A: He never does anything. I am the one who has to say sorry five times. H: That’s a lie. I have to pamper her when she’s upset. I have to say sorry as well. Over a period of time it has reduced a lot. A: He doesn’t come to pacify me. I cry a little and then get back to normal. However, when he gets upset I just ignore it. (laughs) We say sorry to each other five times. That’s the rule. Tell us about your most romantic date. A: We had gone for a Europe trip for about 18 days. It was the most memorable time we’ve spent with each other. And Himmanshoo loves travelling and shopping. Who is more of a shopaholic between the two of you’ll? A: He is… he recently spent about Rs 10, 000 on shoes. H: (laughs) What is your love story? A: In 2004 we’d come from two different cities. We’ve been together till 2015 we’ve got to know each other. We’ve been through a lot of troubles and a lot of good times but we never left each other come what may. We were friends, then best friends and then got married. Who popped the question? H: No one did. Our parents knew about us. We thought it was time to get married. Our parents decided the date and we got hitched. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 39

CHOLESTEROL – HEALTH’S BIGGEST ENEMY Gulneer Puri, wellness consultant.

Cholesterol is one of the leading health problems in India. Few of the high cholesterol risk factors such as family history and age can’t be controlled. How ever, many life style choices can be changed to lower it. Reducing your stress is also a key factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Every one, today is caught up in materialistic modern life, to reach working deadlines, family needs and household responsibility – perhaps in buying a house or even looking into academics of children, to make sure they are faring well and progressing towards the right path in life. During stressful time, chemical messengers are released. If you over eat, smoke or turn into a couch potato in response to high anxiety, you are giving into unhealthy lifestyle habits that can raise level of LDL’s and also erode level of HDL’s. One such theory is, stress hormone increases the fuel available to the body by flooding it with glucose while at the same time inhibiting insulin production. This then prevents cortisol from being stored and instead encourages it to be used immediately. But if this energy is not used because we are not physically active then it may build up eventually leading to the formation of fat tissues and eventually cholesterol in arteries. One can get into many activities to manage your stress, such as going out for walk or joining a gym, involving into few of the yoga exercises, practicing deep breathing exercises, talking to a friend, practicing time management and above all changing one’s diet to bring in a complete life style change. Eat Heart Healthy diet To lower cholesterol eating a dietary pattern that emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, poultry, fish and nuts. Red meat along with sugary food and beverages should also be limited. Saturated fats found in red meat and dairy products raise your total cholesterol and also the bad cholesterol especially LDL. Look in for leaner cuts of meat, low fat dairy (skim or double toned milk). Food higher in polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) include a number of plant based oil as well as fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and trout. Other sources include some nuts and seeds such as walnuts and sunflower seeds, tofu and soya beans. Many diet fit that pattern including DASH – DIETARY APPROACHES TO STOP HYPERTENSION. This can be easily adapted based on your cultural and food preferences. Get Moving Being physically active is also important to prevent heart disease and stroke. 40 minutes of aerobic exercise of moderate Aug 2015 Global Movie : 42

to vigorous intensity done 3-4 times a week is enough to lower both cholesterol and high blood pressure. Brisk walking, swimming and bicycling are few good examples. To stay motivated, find an exercise friend or join an exercise group. Any kind of activity is helpful. Even taking the stairs instead of elevator or doing few sit-ups can also make a difference. Include Soluble Fiber There are two types of fiber soluble and insoluble. Both are considered heart healthy. But soluble fiber gets solubilized in the blood and lowers your LDL level. It also helps to lower sugar levels in diabetes. Add soluble fiber to your diet by eating oats in breakfast and adding oat bran to your meal. Lentils and whole fruits along with peels are good examples of soluble fibers Add whey Protein Whey protein is one of the two proteins in dairy

products. It is the left over translucent water in making cottage cheese (paneer). Whey protein may account for many of the health benefits attributed to dairy. For better results one can also add oat bran to the whey water. Quit Smoking Quitting, improves your HDL cholesterol level. It has been observed that within 20 minutes of quitting, your blood pressure and heart rate decreases. Within one year your risk of heart disease is half than that of a smoker. Within 15 years, your risk of heart disease is similar to some one who never smoked. Lose Weight Carrying even a few extra pounds contributes to higher cholesterol. Losing 5-10% of your weight can also improve cholesterol level. Start by evaluating your eating habits and daily routine. Consider your challenges to weight loss and try to over come them. Small changes help, if you are busy in your work schedule and don’t have time to prepare your meal, pack some thing healthier for home. For snack munch on carrot sticks, seasonal fruits and berries or air popped popcorns instead of potato chips and look for ways to incorporate more activities into your daily routine. I feel eating right diet is like a bank account. Good food choices are good investments for over all well-being of every individual.

Make Red Ginger’s Yogurt and Blueberry Cocktail for Breakfast or Dinner Welcome to A Drink You Can Actually Make, Eater’s first ever recipe series dedicated to simple cocktails from new bars across the country. Miami newbie Red Ginger spans the gamut on Japanese-American fusion cuisine, with a varied menu that runs from crispy kale blossoms to grilled corn on the cob with Parmesan and togarashi to sushi. Cucumber Mint Margarita Recipe This frozen margaritabegins as a cool, crisp cocktail, but there is a secret and it comes from the brand that shared it. The recipe is from Tabasco, that essential hot sauce that no bar or kitchen should be without and it adds a fantastic contrast to the cool taste of fresh mint and cucumber. The Cucumber Mint Margarita is very easy. Simply gather all of your ingredients, toss them in the blender, and start it up. I enjoy the suggestion of a reposado tequila here because that bit of barrel flavor from the aging adds a nice dimension that a blanco cannot. Though I would not rule out a quality blanco either, the reposado simply adds a bit of depth. As with any spicy cocktail, start slow on the hot sauce and add more to suit your taste. This is really easy with blended cocktails because you can use a spoon to taste test it before pouring and any adjustment will just require another whirl of the blender. You can always add heat, but you cannot take it away. If you prefer, skip the salt rim or rim only half of each glass so you can switch back and forth. As always, if you find that the 6 recommended ice cubes leaves the mix too thin, add a few more cubes and blend again until you have your ideal consistency. INGREDIENTS PREPARATION /2 cup chopped cucumber, peeled and seeded 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup key lime juice 1/4 cup chopped mint 1/3 cup tequila reposado 2 tablespoons orange liqueur 1/8 teaspoon Tabasco brand Original Red

Sauce 6 ice cubes Salt for rimming 2 cucumber slices for garnish Prep Time: 5 minutes Total Time: 5 minutes Yield: 2 Cocktails

1. Blend ingredients in a blender for one minute. 2. Divide between two 6-ounce salt-rimmed glasses. 3. Garnish each glass with a cucum ber slice. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 47

Find the cure for PCOS in your kitchen

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is quite common these days. So, it’s not surprising to find many women taking medications, making lifestyle changes and embarking on a fitness regime just to keep the condition under control. But, did you know there are home remedies for it, too? All you need to do is step inside your kitchen and identify these everyday food ingredients and add them to your diet:

Fenugreek (Methi seed) In women diagnosed with PCOS, insulin secreted by pancreas is not efficiently utilised by the tissues and this leads to obesity and production of excess testosterone. Consuming fenugreek leaves or seeds will help in maintaining normal insulin levels. Says Mallika Quereshi, a gynaecologist, “Methi improves glucose tolerance in the body, which helps in weight loss. Soak methi seeds overnight and have it thrice a day — on an empty stomach in the morning, and five minutes before lunch and dinner. You can also consume cooked methi leaves.”

Cinnamon

According to Swastik Mishra, a diabetologist, “This condiment is a proven cure for type 2 diabetes. It also has the ability to stabilise blood sugar level and reduce the insulin resistance. Studies also state that this spice increases the odds of conceiving.” Mix cinnamon with milkshakes or yogurt, bake them into cakes and muffins or just sprinkle them over your cup of chai. Since it pretty much has no calories, you don’t have to worry about piling on kilos.

Flax seeds

“These seeds are very good source of fibre, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and lignans, a protein that reduces the quantity of available testosterones in our body. Flax seeds help in utilising the glucose and insulin in the body, cancelling out most of the side effects of PCOS,” says nutritionist and dietician Anusha M. The seeds can either be powdered and added to your breakfast or mixed with juices. You can also add them to your drinking water every day. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 48

Tulsi Mallika says, “The androgens are not utilised because the ovulation process does not take place. Also, the SHBG protein produced by liver is also pretty low. This is why women have excessive facial hair growth and acne, and trouble conceiving. Tulsi can control androgens and moderate insulin levels. It’s also an excellent antioxidant. Chew at least 10 leaves early in the morning on an empty stomach. Consume boiled tulsi water on a regular basis.”

Honey

Obesity and PCOS are by-products of each other. PCOS mess up hormones in the body, and this leads to obesity. If no steps are taken to reduce weight, it could lead to higher order of diseases like arthritis and heart ailments. Anusha adds, “Honey reduces hunger pangs and keeps you full. Mix one tbsp of honey with lemon and lukewarm water and have it only on an empty stomach early in the morning. This aids in losing weight. Do not heat the honey or have it anytime later than, say, 7.30 am, as it can lead to weight gain.”

Bitter gourd and Ivy gourd

Bitter gourd (karela) and ivy gourd (tinda) are prescribed to diabetics to bring the insulin and glucose level under control. The leaves and the vegetables, both, can be consumed by women with PCOS. They can be cooked normally and had at least five times a week. Alternatively, you can also beat karela and consume it in the form of juice.

Amla

The Indian gooseberry is a fruit that is adept at controlling blood sugar levels and improving fertility in women. Amla is also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. Anusha says, “It’s also a very good cleanser; it flushes out the toxins in the body and thus, aids in weight reduction. Take an amla and squeeze out its juice in a glass. Add lukewarm water and consume it. You can also add amla in a cup of yogurt to make raita or eat it raw, minus its seeds.” Aug 2015 Global Movie : 49

The easiest way to lose weight: a glass of water. “Diet and exercise” – that’s the mantra that most people swear by, when it comes to losing weight the healthy way. But the word “diet” is more than just the food put on a plate. A very important component of a healthy diet is the amount of water a person drinks in a day. While drinking water is not a magic pill to shed those pounds faster, not being adequately hydrated could make weight loss a little harder. Why do you need to drink water? Water helps your body to function correctly. Water is required for a number of chemical reactions and metabolic processes that take place in individual cells, tissues and organs. But if you don’t drink sufficient water, these reactions and processes will not function the way they’re supposed to. And this could affect your overall metabolism. Let’s look at some of the ways water can help you in your weight loss program. You’re not hungry… you’re just thirsty! Sometimes, the body is not able to differentiate between hunger and thirst. So if you feel hungry and tempted to snack on high-calorie food, have a glass of water first. It could be that you are, in fact, just thirsty and the glass of water would make you feel full and prevent you from consuming the extra calories. Water can help you eat less Drinking water some time before a meal has its benefits in overall weight loss, possibly because you feel full and therefore tend to eat smaller portions of food at mealtime. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 50

In one study, people who drank water before a meal ate about 75 calories fewer during the meal. That, in itself, may not seem like much. But 75 x 365 (days in a year) means 27375 calories less in a year, which corresponds to an approximately 4 kilo weight loss, without much effort on your part. Water can help you digest your food better Drinking sufficient quantities of water is also important for your kidneys to function correctly and reduce the risk of kidney stones. Water also helps to prevent constipation. Research seems to confirm the benefits of water during weight loss There is no place here to discuss all the studies that talk about weight loss and water. But let us look at two studies: In one study, there were 48 overweight and obese middle-aged adults who were put on a low-calorie diet. Some of them were asked to drink about 500 ml of water before each of their three meals a day. At the end of three months, those who drank the extra water lost about 2 kgs more than those who didn’t drink water. Another study looked at how people tend to gain weight as they get older. This study was carried out over 4 years. Those who had a higher intake of water and those who substituted their sugar-sweetened beverage consumption with water were less likely to put on weight over the years. To drink or not to drink If you are on a diet to lose weight, you will definitely be keeping an eye on your calories on your plate. But remember to watch your fluid intake as well! Here’s a quick list of what you should drink and what you should stay a mile away from, when losing weight. Keep these at reach: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Water: If you’ve read this article, then you are already aware of how important and healthy it is to drink water and stay hydrated, when trying to lose weight 100% fruit juice: make sure you check the label first. Fruit juice often comes with added sugars and those can be high in calorie, though high in nutritive value Vegetable juice: While vegetable juice is often as nutritious as fruit juices, they often come with fewer calories and a lot of fibre Skimmed or low-fat milk: by giving you the goodness of calcium with far less calories, the low fat milk option is much better than whole milk, when on a diet. Black coffee: coffee is a good source of anti-oxidants and largely calorie-free, just as long as it’s black. Green tea: another great source of antioxidants, green tea may also aid weight loss Stay away from Carbonated drinks: high in calories and low in nutrition, it’s best to avoid these – whether you’re on a diet or not Fruit juices with sugar: some fruit juices have as much sugar added as carbonated drinks. Make sure you check the labels before buying these Energy drinks: once again, check the label on these products first. While energy drinks provide a boost of much-needed energy, they are often high calorie drinks Alcohol: alcohol is high in calories, and that is without counting the fried snacks or nuts that usually accompany a glass of alcohol According to a study, drinking 500 ml of water before every meal could help weight loss Make sure you drink water from a trusted source

Simple Tips To Look Beautiful Without Makeup

If you were to ask any lady about that one thing in common which all women share, the answer would be easy to come by – Makeup! Isn’t it? And if your next question was to be ‘Do you have any skin problems?’ chances are most ladies would reply in the affirmative. While makeup is surely a woman’s prerogative, having beautiful skin is something we all aim for. And the good news is that you don’t always need makeup to look beautiful. Find it hard to believe? Well, here I’m going to give you 8 simple tips on how to look beautiful without makeup.

How To Look Beautiful Without Makeup 1. Drink water: Definitely the first and most important trick is to drink plenty of water each day, no matter what the season, since this glass of water will be way more beneficial to you than any makeup product you may choose to invest in.

2. Moisturize: Love your moisturizer, ladies. The more you keep your skin moisturized and nourished, the more you can prevent the arrival of wrinkles and dry saggy skin. Make sure you moisturize your face and neck region, as well as your hands and feet, as these are the areas that show the first signs of ageing.

3. Use a face wash: Use a face wash daily to remove all dirt and pollution from your face and any traces of leftover makeup products as well. Washing your face daily, preferably once in the morning and once before going to bed, will help open up your pores and give your skin that fresh feeling.

4. Use a toner: Using a toner should be an essential part of your daily skin care regimen. While most of us go for the cleaning and moisturizing routine, we almost always end up being too lazy or forgetful about the toner and that’s where the problem lies. A toner will help tighten your skin and your pores and also remove any traces of oil or grease.

5. Shampooing your hair: Using a shampoo every alternate day or once in about 3 days will make sure that your hair looks fresh and clean. Greasy hair will automatically give you an overall dirty and unkempt look; while freshly cleaned hair makes a huge difference.

6. Applying sunscreen: While we all know the benefits of using a sunscreen daily, most of us do tend to give it a miss, especially if we’re in a hurry and there’s not too much sun out there. This definitely is a skin-care and beauty disaster, as the ever-present harmful rays of the sun will continue causing damage to your skin. If you want to keep your skin looking naturally beautiful and healthy, you have to use the sunscreen daily; there’s just no other option. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 54

7. Hot water with lemon: We all love that first cup in the morning, right? Now try switching that cup of tea or coffee with a hot/ warm cup of water and a slice of lemon. Having this first thing in the morning will flush out toxins from your body and will reduce chances of any skin sensitivities. This will also help keep your body stay hydrated and add that bit of glow to your skin.

8. Exfoliate: Regularly exfoliating your skin will ensure removal of dry and dead skin cells to reveal a clean and glowing skin.

The greenery of the palm trees and rice fields add to the beauty of the place and make it spectacular.

7. Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir: The highways to Ladakh are closed for most part of the year and open up only during MayJune to October-November. 8. Malshej Ghat, Maharashtra: An ideal getaway from Mumbai and Pune, Malshej Ghat comes to life during the monsoons with gushing waterfalls and great views of the surrounding mountain peaks. 9. Chikmagalur, Karnataka:

A famous coffee land in the state of Karnataka, Chikmagalur is one of the greenest destinations abundant with natural beauty. Its beauty peaks during the monsoon. Glorious waterfalls and foggy roads between valleys are a common sight in Chikmagalur.

10. Alleppey, Kerala:

One of the most popular destinations in Kerala, Alleppey looks like a beautiful picture with a silvery mist and lush green hills during the rains. Canals, backwaters, and the beaches are at their best and snakeboats can be seen battling in races. The whole place is wet and green and has a romantic feel to it during the monsoons. A ride into the interiors of Alleppey in a shikara is an experience worth your time and money. Alleppey is less crowded as compared to its travel contemporary Munnar during the monsoon and is therefore a better choice for a quiet getaway.

Sunny Leone: I’ve been forced to stop praising the adult industry! In conversation with the stunning Sunny about films, roles, love and more… A glamed up doll with bright red lips, or pink maybe, a super hot outfit that’ll make every girl go green with envy and a lot of starry tantrums – that’s what I expected when I went for my first interview with Sunny Leone! Well, she was running late by an hour and my doubts about the starry tantrums were only reaffirmed. Also while I was waiting, I was thinking of how to tackle her clingy husband, Daniel Weber. At least that’s what I had heard that he’s like this body guard who doesn’t give her any space and would not let me ask questions and… well a lot of other things. And then… Someone called me and I looked up to see Daniel smiling warmly at me and apologizing for the delay. I have to say I was surprised by his humility. He walked me to Sunny and I froze, thankfully for just a fraction of a second. And no, it wasn’t because of her stunning beauty (which BTW is true), but because I saw this petite girl dressed in a pair of denims and fancy red top curling up her nude lips in a sweet smile. She got up to greet me and soon my nervousness vanished leading me into an easy, smooth conversation with Sunny about life in Bollywood, controversies and troubles, dream roles and films, love and romance, and much much more. And guess what? Her so-called clingy husband sat far away, on another table, all by himself. Not monitoring, not disturbing and not being clingy at all! Whoever bestowed that awful title on Daniel must have been insanely jealous of him! Anyway… Here’s what I talked about with Sunny ‘Not So Starry’ Leone… How’s Bollywood treating you? So far so good! Daniel and I work together most of the time. We’ve had a lot of ups, we’ve had a lot of downs. I’d say more ups than downs, which is a good thing. It hasn’t been easy. To the outside world, when somebody peers into our world, it looks like everything has come so easy, but it hasn’t. It’s been a struggle. There’ve been moments when we definitely get hit hard and then we just bounce back haste fast because we have to keep working. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 64

Which would you say was the worst moment of them all… Recently with this lady that filed an FIR. It was probably one of the worst moments.

if it wasn’t created into such a huge thing with the media and online circulation then those people would have never gone to that level because all this is being done for publicity.

Do you plan on taking any action against this unwanted trouble that comes your way because of your past? In this country it’s not something that’s easily done. There are no laws protecting different artists and celebrities or people that are in entertainment. There are no laws against defaming, there are no laws against people writing and doing crazy things. So until those laws are in place, there’s not much I can do. I have to just take it. We are working towards coming to some sort of resolution with all this. God-willing that’s going to happen. I’m not here to offend anybody, I’m not here to continue the path that I was on. I’ve come to India to start a new life, to start something that is not a part of my path. I’ve come here to make a new future.

You’ve said the same thing about Celina Jaitley and Rakhi Sawant’s statements too My response is pretty much the same every time. I never say anything bad about anybody. And also it is non-sense. So if those two want to be categorized in the same group of people who create non-sense then what am I supposed to do. I can’t call her and say why are you doing this, this is not true or why are you doing all these mean things. They are just doing it for publicity.

You’ve always maintained that you loved everything about the adult industry. But of late there’s been a sudden change in your statements. Why so? Because I’ve been forced to! I still love everything about the adult industry but I’ve been forced to say that I’m here to do this (work in Bollywood) because people are so horrible and mean. Not everybody, but there are certain groups, certain sections who seem to have a personal vendetta against me because I’ve hurt them so horribly (laughs sarcastically)… I don’t get it. I have to start clarifying my reason for being here because of those people. And also because the media has made it such a big issue. If the media didn’t recognize my porn star past as a big issue it wouldn’t have become so big.

I heard that the films have been shelved… That’s just something the media started. Nothing’s over yet. It’s (Tina and Lolo) still in the process of being approved and it will be a real shame if it doesn’t because it’s actually a great film and it’s so funny. It’s not as crazy as people think. May be it might be because my outlook of cinema is very different than other people. I don’t take it seriously; it’s all fiction. The great thing is that is you don’t like that kind of content you don’t have to buy a ticket. No body’s forcing you to watch it. I play twin sisters Tina and Lolo and I love both characters.

But in a culture like India’s, your past might still have been a problem even without the media’s help… It still would have been something I had to deal with but

Coming to the work front, what’s the update on Mastizaade and Tina and Lolo? My producers are very secretive. They don’t even give me an update. I know that they’ve been working very hard and hopefully we’ll have an answer soon.

All you characters so far have always been glamorized. Do you think it’s because of your past or is it that you aren’t ready to leave your comfort zone yet? There are a lot of movies that I signed a long time ago and they finished all around the same time. So it looks like they are all very very similar. But next few movies that I’m Aug 2015 Global Movie : 65

working on are in this very serious drama zone and a few comedies too. No matter what the story, your films are always marketed around your sexuality, like Ek Paheli Leela had a lot more than just skin show. Are you okay with it or do you not have a say in it? I don’t really have a say in how they take it forward. Certain things I definitely voice saying that I don’t like this and I won’t promote it, you can do whatever you want… because at the end of the day it is owned by somebody else. So how they showcase something is really upto them. If I don’t like it I don’t promote it. You said in one of your earlier interviews that you choose films based on scripts. Would the criteria be same if the film starred the Khans, Kumars or Kapoors? Whenever I’ve watched any of the films of Shah Rukh or Salman, I’ve realised they don’t really make films that are boring. They usually make films that are very very interesting for the most part; a couple of them might not have been so great, but mostly they are. So it works out for the best. But if I were offered a character in one of their films that I didn’t like, I wouldn’t do it. I mean it has to be something I’m comfortable with… A couple of movies that I’ve watched, not theirs, like different movies… I felt like that’s not the zone I want to be in. But yes if an

A-List actor wants me to do a cameo I’d say yes and if they asked how much I wanted, I’d say absolutely nothing! You know at that point it’s only about working with people you’ve admired for so many years. It’s the same thing as in the US, if Leonardo Dicaprio’s camp asked me if I wanted to do a cameo in his film I wouldn’t ask for money. I would do it because I’ve been dying to work with him. So far, all your films have been centered around you, but if you sign a film with one of the A-Listers, aren’t you worried that the focus would shift? If I were being side-zoned by Mr Salman Khan, I don’t care. It would be fine, even Shah Rukh. It’s not that I want a film to be all about me, I just want to make a good product. Daniel too is making his Bollywood debut with Dangerous Husn. Can we expect to see you two pair up onscreen? I actually want to make a film with Daniel. It’s all about finding the perfect script that captures his personality and mine and the chemistry we have. So it has to have these elements in the movie that really capture who we are naturally. I don’t know if I’m making sense… Like if I ever think of a movie that Daniel and I could have been in, it is Mr and Mrs Smith. Even though it’s an action movie, I almost feel like some of the scenes that these two have are actually how they are in real life because they are so natural. How would you define your personality and Daniel’s in one word? It’s very difficult to define Daniel in one word! Okay you can use more… Daniel is extremely grounded; he is extremely smart when it comes to business – handling the company, handling my career and his own. He’s very very organized and he’s very sharp. And something that people don’t know about him is that he’s very silly. He’ll never show you, you’ll probably never see that side of him; but I’m the lucky one and I get to see that every day. I see a different Daniel from what people see – a loving, caring one who makes me laugh all day long. He’s very supportive. When it comes to my personality, people visualize and think that I’m exactly how they see on TV or what people try to portray me as. But if they spent 5 minutes with me they would know that I’m very goofy, I’m a little clumsy, I’m very determined when it comes to my job. I’d rather be

working every single day than take a vacation. I work a lot. Is Daniel a workaholic too? Oh yes! We are both workaholics, but we spend some amazing time together. Every single morning we make breakfast together and we sit and we eat together. We talk about anything and everything. And it’s very rare that we have an argument (let me knock wood here so we don’t have a fight later). Obviously we disagree like any normal couple but we talk it through and reach a compromise. It’s never my way or the highway… that doesn’t work in a relationship. So it’s all about give and take. From what you’re saying, your idea of romance sounds very different from the Spiltsvilla idea of romance… Well Spiltsvilla is a very teenage, early 20s kind of romance. We all know what kind of mental state we were in when we were 19 or 20 and what we are in now which is may be 5 years or 10 years or even 15 years later. The decisions we make in our teens and early 20s are all based on our hormones (laughs). There can’t be anybody older than 25-30 who can disagree with this because that’s just the way it is. Those dolphins that we have in our tummies when we meet someone for the first time, it dictates a very irrational decision. Spiltsvilla is very young love… We put the couples in different situations that challenge them mentally and physically. But a lot of your challenges objectify both men and women… Well when you watch any reality show whether it’s in India, whether it’s in the US, whether it’s anywhere, part of the lure of watching is seeing things and doing things that you would never do in real life. May be that’s what the youth wants; they want to be hot and good looking. It might seem like objectification to the older group but not to them… they’re the ones doing it, we dint force them to do anything. Like the theme this season is ‘what women want, what women love,’ so I would remind these girls, and so would Ranvijay, that if you don’t want to do something, you need to speak up. And we’ll never force anybody to do something they don’t want to. The boys just did whatever they wanted any way, but for the girls on the show, we did emphasize that if they are uncomfortable, they need to speak up.

Any particular role or reality show or TV show you want to take up? I really always wanted to play a superwoman. I know actors often say that they want to play this serious role or that serious role and make this type of art film… I just want to make entertaining cinema and I want to have fun doing it. And I always wanted to be a superhero, since I was a little kid. And what would your super power be? I would definitely want some sort of flying and some sort of super strength to be able to move things out of my way… I don’t know if I’ll ever get to do it, but yes that’s something that interests me. You once said that your parents were very religious and that you visited the temple every weekend as a child. Do you still? As a kid I went to the Gurudwara every weekend and my brother and I were forced to do kirtan. Now I realize that it was a good thing. In fact, Daniel and I had a Punjabi wedding; we got married in a Gurudwara. Since both my parents had passed away, it was very important to me that even though they are not here, the tradition got carried forward. You say you’re a big fan of Priyanka Chopra and Aishwarya Rai and that you’d be starstruck on seeing them. But now that you’ve achieved so much, would you still? Oh my gosh, yes! I so haven’t met them and I so want to meet them. Aug 2015 Global Movie : 67
