I made it without a film with the Khans! “Kangana Ranaut”

The actress roars that she didn’t need a Khan to be where she is… It is an accepted reality that if you want to see yourself at the top of the ladder, you have to be in a Khan movie. That means you will have hype, popularity, fame, visibility and acceptance at your feet within three days. But Kangana Ranaut didn’t need them to be famous and popular which she made perfectly clear during an interview to a daily. Kangana pointed out that while Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were always supportive, others were neglectful towards her in the industry. The actress feels that it was general notion that she was not meant to succeed since she was the outsider. She was laughed at as well. But she managed to prove everyone wrong even without a film with a Khan. The actress sounded pretty proud of her achievements. Well, we will have to give it to her. We are sure it wasn’t easy for her to make a mark without anyone backing her. But isn’t that the reason why her prolific rise is so inspirational? We think so!

Hashmi reacts to his latest release being called ‘regressive’ A make-or-break film for Emraan Hashmi, Hamari Adhuri Kahani (HAK) was supposed to give the actor’s career a fresh lease of life after a string of flops. This is the third time he has been paired opposite Vidya Balan and it also being a Mohit Suri film, much was expected from it. But now, HAK’s out and its fate at the BO is decided. But Emraan is unfazed. “I really never felt the pressure. I understand everyone needs to make money and there are expectations, but HAK is one film that went beyond all that. It was a wholesome cinematic experience for me. Box office earnings are, of course, always a bonus. It was a bit tense for my producers until the first Monday, but I guess it turned out all right,” he says.

No one can insult me without my permission!

While the film got a decent opening, some reviews were far from encouraging — in fact, the fraternity was divided in its opinion about the film, most tilting the negative end. The film was called ‘regressive’ — a term Emraan says needs to be put into context. “I respect every department in filmmaking — including critics who review the film. Critiquing a film is a person’s opinion. Just because he/she is a fan of slapstick comedy doesn’t mean I enjoy the genre as well. What is good for her/him, may be a headache for me so a review isn’t necessarily a benchmark to gauge a film. As far as people calling it a regressive story of a woman is concerned, we need to know that being progressive does not just mean wearing jeans and t-shirts. There are still pockets in our country where all this still happens. So many husbands and boyfriends still dictate a woman’s life. We had to show the woman to be like that to justify the choices she makes. Everyone feels the need to be loved as it’s a universal feeling. I don’t take these things too seriously. Besides, no one can insult me without my permission.

If I have achieved anything in life, it is because of martial arts! “Suniel Shetty”

A

ctor Suniel Shetty, one of the pioneers of the fitness movement in India and a sports enthusiast, says his only dream was to play for the country but unfortunately couldn’t fulfill it. ”My only dream was to play for the country but unfortunately I couldn’t,” Suniel said during an event to support an innovative style of martial arts which includes dance steps. “As far as studies were concerned, I only wanted to pass. My obsession was sports and to represent the school in any and every sport possible, be it cricket or other sports. But I’m happy with the fact that I got to entertain the audiences.” On martial arts, he said: “If I have achieved anything in life, it is because of martial arts. And the way this particular form balances rhythm with mental and physical strength is brilliant.” On the emergence of various sports leagues like the Indian Super League (football) and the Indian Premier League (cricket), he said: “Thousands got the opportunity to earn a livelihood with the IPL and other leagues. And this proves that India is emerging as a top sporting destination in the world.”

Jacqueline Fernandez wants Deepika Padukone to romance Salman Khan in Kick 2! Talk about some exciting news! The Kick actress is suggesting a casting coup. Sajid Nadiadwala, are you listening?

So what if Salman Khan has ‘Kicked’ out Jacqueline Fernandez from his Kick sequel. The Lankan babe is not a bit upset about not being a part of the film. In fact, while earlier she clarified stating,”If not in Kick 2, Inshallah there will be more movies with Salman.” The latest we hear is that she is keen on seeing Deepika Padukone romance Salman in Kick 2. Wait, did Jacky just read our mind? At a recent press conference, Jacqueline, who is currently gearing up for Brothers opposite Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra said, “I want to see Salman Khan and Deepika in KICK 2. It’s a fresh pair & they’ll look great.” This certainly comes as an exciting story, especially because it involves Dippy and Salman in one frame. How we wish if it also comes true sometime SOON! But the Kick 2 plan looks quite unsure. As according to the latest reports, Aditya Chopra is considering Deepika for his next film Sultan starring Salman Khan. Nevertheless, we are open to place our bets until we get an official confirmation. S lets see if Salman-DP’s blockbuster pairing will make it to the Sultan camp or Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick 2. Irrfan Khan ‘Overjoyed’ With The Response to Jurassic World

“In commercial cinema before anything happens they say I love you.” I am in the midst of discussing romance with Irrfan Khan when the actor comes up with this observation. The media, in its hurry to label actors, has often failed to scratch our lone international star beneath the sticker of intensity. So when the promos of “Piku”, his latest release opposite Deepika Padukone with Amitabh Bachchan completing the unlikely triangle as the father of the girl, started inundating the air space, one got curious about Irrfan’s idea of romance. “My idea of romance is different from the one that is being propagated by commercial cinema. There are so many other things in romance that have not been addressed or dealt with in our films and I try to explore them. Like in ‘Lunchbox’, the two people in love don’t even get to see each other. There is longing, there is attraction. It is like finding your soulmate without even seeing her. In ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’, the guy is ready to do everything for her despite knowing that she doesn’t belong to him. There is complete submission to this need that he has to save her. Stalking the girl or to be obsessive about her is a very broad way of looking at romance. Life has so many shades of romance. In ‘Piku’ we have explored some of it. People have to understand that it takes time for you to say I love you. So much happens between two people before they propose each other. ‘Piku’ shows romance can be worked around an ailing parent as well. In our so called romantic flicks parents are either absent or they become the main conflict of the story. Here the father is not the only one who is aging, Rana and Piku are also aging and exploring.”

becoming an actor was to be somebody else. To live that person. Otherwise, sometimes, I am boring for myself.” However, he says, there are certain roles where when you connect with them it is not a very pleasant space. “As a person you would want to go away from them but then you are an actor so even if you don’t enjoy that space still you want to do it. You want to explore that character for yourself and share it with the audience. Sometimes there are characters which you want to be forever. Umber Singh was not one of them definitely because I didn’t want to be in that space for such a long time. That’s why I took one and a half years to say yes.”

He has a different notion of violence as well. Recently we discovered it in “Qissa” where he internalised the emotion so well that he didn’t need any props to express it. “Internalisation is something that gives you an experience of doing a role,” he explains. “My whole idea of becoming an actor is to experience something that you haven’t. For me the whole point of

Between Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, there is the Irrfan Khan method of acting. Anuj Kumar speaks to the incredibly talented actor about his process of internalisation and how it affects his psyche.

Do such characters leave a scar on the actor’s psyche? “It gives you more than a scar. The way it unfolds, it expands you as a human being. You live somebody else’s experiences through you and that is the uniqueness of being an actor. In Hollywood their discipline is something else. They shoot one film at a time. So there are more chances to go deeper and deeper into a character and it becomes difficult for you to come out. But

here we don’t need that kind of depth. We don’t need to connect that deeply and still we can tell a story.” It was not always the case, though. Dilip Kumar internalised so many tragic roles that he was advised by a psychiatrist to try some light-hearted roles. “It happened because that kind of filmmaking was happening at that time. We lost it completely. If you see ‘Devdas’ you can understand why he was advised lighter roles.” And then there is Amitabh Bachchan who seems to be attached and detached with the character at the same time. Irrfan says he tried to understand his method and there were some pleasant surprises. “The way he approaches the character, the kind of dedication and alertness he has. At this age he is ready to be raw clay eager to be moulded. And yes he says he doesn’t identify with the character but still he enacts them with such conviction. He is detached from the whole process still he delivers it. I don’t have those skills. This can happen only to people who are born actors.” But he is a trained actor. “Even among trained actors no two actors can be the same. Training doesn’t provide you a formula that everybody can apply in a situation and it will work for all of them. Acting is a very sensitive process of searching your own method. You have to very minutely figure out what works for you and what doesn’t. It is a trial-anderror method. Nobody can teach you in training school how to generate emotion. They tell you about emotional memory where when you are playing an emotional scene you are expected to remember a similar situation from your life but you can’t keep on doing that in 13 takes. And if you have a reshoot how will you bring it back. Once or twice you can summon an emotion from your personal experience but after two takes it usually goes dry. So how do you generate that emotion? You have to find a way yourself. There is no technique for that.” He cites the example of “Life of Pi”, where during the climax he gets very emotional about the tiger. “If I start counting I must have done that scene for almost 100 times in front of the camera. For the first time I had to generate emotion and I did it. After six months I got a call from Ang Lee that he wants to reshoot the entire thing. So again I had to generate those emotions and the character just didn’t need to emote, he had to cry as well, and I was not supposed to use any external material to bring the tears out. How it happened, I am still not sure about it. You just have to bring yourself up to that level of challenge and deliver.” In National School of Drama, he says, generating emotions used to be his main concern. “I could indicate to public my thought process through my gestures but how to generate emotions was my main concern. No teacher could answer me that. At one point an exercise was going on about emotional memory and each of us was supposed to share an emotional happening from our lives. I started talking about my father and I started crying. But my immediate concern was if I keep on doing that there will be a time when it will stop working for me. That used to boggle me.” Does it threaten to turn an actor into a fake person in his real life? “Not really. An actor develops another personality which keeps observing him all the time. That’s the

most important thing that I learnt from the drama school that you should keep a check on yourself all the time. You should watch your mind, your body, your heart. You are not guided by your impulses. You have a better dialogue with yourself. When you are swayed by anger there is another person inside you who keeps a watch on you.” At the moment his secretary is keeping a watch on us. Come June and Irrfan is headed to get into the skin of Harry Sims, the head of the mysterious organisation in Ron Howard’s adaptation of Dan Brown’s bestseller “Inferno”. “It is a pivotal role for sure,” says the actor whose demand is increasing in Hollywood with every outing. “It is much more nuanced and refined than my previous roles. I like when nuances become more important than apparent action. As for the character he is much more flamboyant, there is a sense of humour and style in him.” However, despite all the global attention India continues to be his base. “Oh yes. I will be back,” he signs off with the smile of a man in control of his game.

Irrfan Khan Says, “The Success Of Jurassic Worldhas Come Out As A Blessing For All Of Us. I Am Overjoyed With The Response That The Film Has Received In India And Abroad” Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, who plays the role of Simon Masrani, the owner of the dinosaur park in the movie Jurassic World, feels the success of the movie has turned out to be a blessing for him. “The success of Jurassic World has come out as a blessing for all of us. I am overjoyed with the response that the film has received in India and abroad. I thank everyone who has contributed to this film and made it such a large success,” Irrfan said in a statement. Jurassic World has minted over $200 million at the US box office so far.

22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, the story unfolds in a fully functional resort on Isla Nublar that sees more than 20,000 visitors a day. The new park includes a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme parktype setting and, of course, unprecedented close access to real, living dinosaurs. The movie, which also stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in lead roles, is set on Isla Nublar island, the same location asJurassic Park and is a direct sequel to the 1993 super hit.

IRRFAN WAS REQUIRED TO MONITOR THE PART AND TO DRESS IN THE BEST OF CLOTHES, LOOK SUAVE AND REVEL IN LUXURY

Known for his sometimes casual, sometimes dapper fashion, acclaimed actor Irrfan Khan has added some of his personal style to his character in Hollywood film Jurassic World. The Paan Singh Tomar actor will be seen as Simon Masrani in the new-age adaptation of the popular dinosaur franchise. His character is the owner of the park where the world comes to catch a glimpse of the most intriguing creatures. Playing the owner of the park, Irrfan was required to monitor the part and to dress in the best of clothes, look suave and revel in luxury. His wardrobe was put together keeping these very factors in mind. Hence he will be seen sporting a host of luxury brands for his clothing and accessories in the movie. During the research, the actor himself keenly participated in styling his own character. He even put together suggestions to make the character more interesting through appearance. “Yes, we all worked together to get the perfect look for Simon Masrani, confirmed the Slumdog Millionaire actor. Meanwhile, Irrfan is busy working on another foreign project Inferno, in which he is sharing screen space with Tom Hanks

Actor Irrfan Khan has shot down reports

suggested that he has been approached to play the titular role in director Omung Kumar’s upcoming film Sarabjit, a biopic on the slain Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh. The Piku star, who is in Budapest shooting for his next Hollywood project Inferno alongside Tom Hanks, said he has not been approached for the film. “I haven’t been approached to play Sarabjit at all. This news is definitely not true,” Irrfan, 48, said in a statement. Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been roped in to play Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur, who fought for her brother’s release from the Lahore jail.

Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra’s PDA on the sets of Kapoor and Sons has got tongues wagging!

Like Ranbir and Kat, these two may never admit being in a relationship but guess what, Ms Bhatt and Sid aren’t really doing a job when it comes to keeping their personal life under the wraps… A lot has been said and written about Alia Bhatt and his alleged beau Sidharth Malhotra. While everyone knows the Student of the Year co-stars are more than just good friends, both the actors have however decided to maintain silence over their relationship. Well, they may not be vocal about their ishqwala love but its quite hard for them to hide the same especially now that they have teamed up once again for a film and are spending so much time together. Yes, the duo is currently shooting for Shakun Batra’s film Kapoor and Sons Since 1921 in the beautiful valley of Coonoor. And we hear the Shaandaar actress and Sid are just inseparable on the sets. Ahem ahem! While talking to a leading tabloid, a source revealed, “In addition to spending time on and off the set, the two have been keeping a tab on each other’s daily diet and shooting schedule. They get along very well and are glued to each other. Even when they were in Mumbai, Sidharth would pick up Alia and drop her to the shoot.” Awww isn’t that’s sweet? Well, it also makes one thing very clear – the Kapoor and Sons co-stars are indeed quite serious about each other. So let’s hope this relationship works out for them because they look super cute not just on the big screen but also in real life! Right guys?

Anil Kapoor

The evergreen veteran says that people close to him were in two-minds about him doing Dil Dhadakne Do but his decision to do the film has paid off

Anil Kapoor is on a high. His phone hasn’t stopped ringing after Dil Dhadakne Do. And he is feeling smug. Rightfully so, he stood apart from the ensemble cast. He was playing an older guy on the screen for the first time and it could have gone horribly wrong. He tells me how he and Zoya Akhtar had a standoff on the first day of shooting. He wasn’t happy with his hair and refused to shoot. She refused to back down because she had that location only for a day. Finally, they made do, he wore a hat and she got her shot. Here, he talks about playing dad on screen, being dad off screen and the plan ahead. Playing dad in DDD was sort of a first, right? No, I have done it many times. I have done Bulandi and Eshwar in which I played a grandfather. The only difference is that I also played a younger part in the same film. Even in a film like Lamhe, where I played a character as old as Sridevi’s father and I romanced her as well. In DDD, I am playing a character that doesn’t age from youth. Amitji (Bachchan) has started this trend from films like Khuda Gawah. He did those kinds of senior roles. In a way, it is also like what Dilip Kumar did in Shakti. You had no reservations about playing a father to youngsters in their mid-20s? In my head, Ranveer (Singh) is playing my son; I am not playing his father. So you have to see it this way: I am playing a patriarch. You need conviction to play such a character, like all the roles that Daniel Day Lewis has done or what Marlon Brando did in Godfather. My only fear was: how do I tackle the media because no matter how intelligent or sensible the editor or the journalist is, the question will be this. Ouch. But it is valid because while your contemporaries had switched to doing character roles, you were still doing lead roles. But this is a lead role. When Zoya came to me, she said ‘Anil, I am coming to you as a lead’. I am the lead in DDD. If I do a Race also or if I do Welcome or No Entry, I am playing the lead. I am packaging it and making it an ensemble because I am not a solo hero. See, it’s a very strategic plan I am following so that I can extend my journey as an actor. Every actor has to plan this to extend his career. So playing an older character was always part of a plan? Yes, I was just waiting for the right film. Actually, one of the reasons I agreed to play a father in DDD is to stop that perception of me that I have of being eternally young. People talk about a fountain of youth that I have discovered. I

didn’t want to live with this image. It’s a trap. I just want to get out of it because it’s a very tiring trap. And I should not be delusional, like actors become. Obviously, I am going to look after myself but I know that as an actor, it is time to make some changes in the kind of roles I accept. Now I am in my 50s, I have grown children and my son is about to make his debut in films… I decided to get out of this trap. 22 years back, when Parampara was made, Yashji (Chopra) had asked me to play Aamir and Saif’s father. Feroz Khan wanted to make Godfather with me. He wanted to take Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty as my sons. I said no. I said you have to have that kind of integrity as Francis Ford Coppola had. He didn’t take stars to play the sons. He took Al Pacino who was nobody then. In DDD also, it was the casting that worked. Zoya was not trying to make a proposal. Also, I feel family is the best genre to play the patriarch in, rather than playing a boring Bombay elderly mafia don just because it sounds good. I’ve heard that before you go for a shot, you look into the mirror and tell yourself: Kya dikhta hai! You are too good. Is that correct? Everybody has some quirks; a little bit of madness and things you do to charge yourself. In my time, my contemporaries were much better looking and had better personas and got better breaks. I had to do something to make me feel that I was on that level as well, so I became my own cheerleader. If someone would ask me, ‘How are you?’ I would say: I am handsome. So yes, when nobody praises me, I look into the mirror and praise myself. You have to understand actors those days… There was Bachchan who had this larger-than-life persona. There was Dharmendra – the most good looking man in the world. Then

there were Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Dut and Sunny Deol with their muscles. And then there was me — I was skinny, I had small eyes, my dance was not special and my looks were ordinary. I had to completely psyche myself and work. People used to say earlier that he is not good looking, and now people are talking about my looks. How did that change? From which angle do I look good? At what point did you decide it was time to switch to playing characters? I decided that before people tell me ‘You shouldn’t do these (young) roles,’ they should ask, ‘Why did you do this (older) role’ and ‘How did you have the guts to do this at a time when you look so good?’ I have always done interesting characters, like in Taal or in Biwi No. 1. I remember at the time, Arunaji (Irani) wanted to make a film with me as a leading man, and she was very upset when she saw me in Biwi No. 1. She said, “Aapne kyon kiya? Main toh aapko lead bana rahi thi, aapne jaake second lead kyon kar liya?” I had to explain to her that I have a longer vision. For me, it’s a marathon and not a 100 meters run. That’s why I did it. Even with DDD, kaafi logon ne bola mat karo. Everybody was subtly saying that it’s a wrong decision. Did you discuss it with anybody? No. Except Aamir. He already knew. He said I must do this film. Also, Ranbir (Kapoor), Adi (Chopra), Rhea and I don’t know if I should add the name of my son my son Harsh here, who was also a deciding factor. Uska dimaag nahi kharab hona chahiye. He also got the credit for me accepting Slumdog Millionaire (laughs), but he pushed me to do this role. They all said I have to do this film. Why Ranbir? Ranbir, at that time, was doing the film and even after he opted out, he said, ‘Sir, you please do it. Nobody else can do it.’ It was like one gang working. Zoya ne shaayad paise khilaaye sabko.

And my entire team, including my PR, said don’t do it. Even Sonam, Sunita and Boney told me not to do it. And what does Sunita think now? She is thrilled but she knows me very well. She used to always tell me, “Anil you are just latkaoing them and I know you will not do this film.” In my family they all believe that I just pretend to be very mainstream but heart of heart, I am arty. They have the heartiest laughs at my expense. They feel I am more artistically inclined and they feel I have to be pushed to do a little mainstream; otherwise I would go totally deep in serious cinema. I feel I have maintained a correct balance, which is a much more painful journey. Doing only one thing is far easier than trying to balance and becoming a star and an actor. So you’re more open to play dad now? It’s not the question of playing dad. I feel somewhere it will open gates for all actors. Aamir is doing it in Dangal, Akshay Kumar in Brothers, Ajay (Devgn) in Drishyam. So it’s great for us. I think salt and pepper is the new sexy. You were very secretive about your look in the film. You didn’t want it to be revealed. I didn’t want people to speculate and write things ke baal color kar raha hai, yeh kar raha hai, woh kar raha hai. Why should I take that stress? Once they saw my work and when the theatrical trailer came out, people would anyway know. So I put my foot down and it was a part of my contract that I won’t promote the film and I won’t be in any teaser or poster. But you were on the film’s poster. Yes, that was decided later. Ritesh and Farhan came to me and said it’s a patriarch’s film. It’s from his point of view – actually it is from Pluto’s POV — the patriarch Kamal Mehra is the main part. It’s a family film about these four people. Without the main member of the family, it might come across as a romantic film and send out the wrong message. Then I did one poster and the theatrical trailer after a lot of bargaining. They told me you are the first actor we have met who is saying he doesn’t want any publicity. Yaar, kitni baar publicity mili hai, I am not a bloody bhookha for publicity. I guarded my look so much. Not a single picture came out during shooting. Given that on the ship there were 2700 people, someone or the other could have taken a photograph. Even all my co-actors were taking selfies. ‘ How did you manage that? I protected myself. I bought lot of camouflage stuff from LA. I had a full production team and security around me to ensure no one took a picture. I used to constantly be wearing hats and caps. Once, from Mehboob Studios only one top shot was taken. Someone had fixed a camera and taken a top shot. But the first time people actually saw me was when we gave the first look in one of the newspapers and then the theatrical trailer. You did South films at the beginning of your career. Why not later? I was going there because beggars can’t be choosers. At that time, I was not getting any work here. To work in South films is a tough journey. You want to be with your family, you want to stay where your roots are. I only went there as I was not getting any work here and there I was getting roles as a leading man. Here everybody wanted to give me bit roles only. There came a stage where they wanted me only for one scene. That was very humiliating. I wanted to rise. I got out of here because mentally I decided, “I am no longer going to do that.

THE WOMAN TO WATCH - ANUSHKA SHARMA Some girls take their own time to reach out and tell the world that they are here to have their place and have their say. They make an unexpected beginning which turns out to be a success and then go on building step by step and within a matter of years are women who are all out to win on their own terms. Anushka Sharma is certainly one of them… It was about eight years ago that Aditya Chopra was looking out for a new girl to be cast opposite Shah Rukh Khan in his film, “Rab Ne Banaa Di Jodi”. It was after looking at more than six hundred girls that Aditya selected Anushka and within another few months Anushka proved that Aditya had made the right choice. She was an actress who could take on the challenge of facing King Khan. Her natural performance in the film found her millions of fans and she was a star with her very first film…

It was time for a girl like her to go all out and build a career as an actress who mattered. And within the last seven years Anushka has been one of the best known actresses wanted by the best filmmakers in roles they believe only she can do justice to. Among the films in which Anushka has stood out whatever the circumstances and challenges are “Band Baaja Baraat”, “Ladies vs Ricky Bahl”, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” (the last film directed by Yash Chopra), “Matru Ki Bijalee Ka Mandola” and “PK”. She was lucky to work with directors who knew her calibre to breathe life into the most difficult and complex characters. If one goes into the list above, it will be known that Anushka has always been trying to go away from the beaten track and pave a way of her own as an actress. The very fact that she was the choice of both Aditya Chopra and his father Yash Chopra is proof enough to know how Anushka has been growing as an actress… If there were people in the industry who felt that Anushka was just another girl in the race to be recognised as an actress, they had more coming from her. She took a bold decision to turn producer with a film like “NH10” which no ordinary woman would have dared to make. It was what was described as a dark film with Anushka in a very daringly different role, playing the woman as an avenger. Some of her scene, especially the climax scene in which a battered and bruised Anushka walks up to her enemy in slow but determined strides with an iron rod in her hand is one scene which will always be remembered and talked about whenever there is talk about a woman taking revenge. The sound of the iron rod as she drags it behind it is a sound which will ring in the ears of all those who hear it only once in the film. It will always be remembered as the sound of a woman’s courage to take revenge at any cost. “NH10” was a double victory for Anushka, she was recognised as a mature actress and she was accepted as a woman producer with an agenda of her own… Anushka is now all out to say that she was not a flash in the pan producer who would be satisfied with producing just one film. She is here to stay as a producer out to make that big difference to Indian cinema. She has plans to make two films which will go on the floors soon, one to be directed by Navdeep Singh who directed “NH10” and the other by a new director Akshat Verma. She may act in Navdeep’s film but not in Akshat’s film because the role in the film doesn’t suit her…

Anushka, the forever on the watch to select her roles with alacrity is all excited about her new release, Zoya Akhtar’s “Dil Dhadakne Do”. She is teamed with Ranveer Singh who was last seen with her in her very first film, “Band Baaja Baraat”. She has other films coming to her but she has still to give that famous nod to any of them because they have still not come up to the standards she now looks for to do a film and a role… Like every other star- actress Anushka has also had her share of gossip and controversy. She has however not hidden anything about her affairs of the heart. And when the whole country was trying to blame her for India losing to Australia in the semi-finals of the World Cup in cricket, she was hurt, but she did not let it harm her heart or her mind. She carries her willpower with her 24×7 because she does not believe in doing anything in life and especially when it comes to her career without willing to do it with all the power at her command. I like Salman Khan despite being Govinda’s daughter, says Tina Ahuja

In a free wheeling interview, the star kid opens up about and clarifies all the rumours doing the rounds relating to her….

Govinda’s daughter Narmadaa aka Tina Ahuja is all set for her Bollywood debut with Second Hand Husband. She seems confident even though her debut has been talked about for over half a decade. Sitting calmly she talks about not just her coming movie but about her father, her rumoured debut opposite Salman Khan, and life in general. Excerpts… Are you happy that you are finally making a debut because your debut had been in the talking for so many years? I am happy and looking forward to the release of Second Hand Husband, but I wouldn’t say that I am relieved that I finally made a debut. I think every thing has a proper time. Prior to this movie also I was getting a lot of movie offers, but because of the immense pressure from the media about my debut, I didn’t sign just about any film. I waited and selected

a script which I really connected to and wanted to be a part of. I know because my dad is a big star, I will definitely have a lot of comparisons, but until I was fully sure about the script and the story line I didn’t want to sign up on for something. If I hadn’t got anything like Second Hand Husband, I would have happily sat at home. I wouldn’t have just picked up a movie just for the sake of making a debut. We had heard news about you having signed a film to be made by Lovely Singh? How true is that? It’s true. I was to work in a film directed by him, but before the film could start rolling, there occurred some problems between him and the producer. After some days I came to know that Lovely had left that film. I too took a break from that film and waited a few months to see as to what was happening of that film. When nothing materialized after six months or so, I started meeting new people and reading new film scripts. Didn’t your father help you out when you were going through such times? I personally didn’t want my dad calling up producers asking them to cast me in their films. He is a superstar and I would never want him to do such a thing for me which will be below his level of stardom. I had seen many people used to call dad and asked him to recommend them, but I won’t do that. Dad had always asked me to do things my way. If I want to work in films, I will call up producers and directors personally and ask to meet them and see if they have any story or script where I would fit in. You will be shocked to know that it was I who has called

Second Hand Husband director Smeep Kang. I had seen one of his Punjabi films and had loved it so much, I wanted to work with him. So I got his number from a friend of mine and got in touch with him. After a few months or so, he called up and spoke to me about this script he had got for his Bollywood debut. Getting to Salman Khan, why was it that Sonakshi Sinha made a debut opposite him in Dabangg and not you? We had confirmed reports saying that you were supposed do the film before her. Weren’t you? It’s all a rumour. I am a big Salman Khan fan and met him three-four times. I am too shy when he is in front. I couldn’t have ever imagined to be making my debut opposite him. As a kid, he was my most favourite actor. Wasn’t your dad your favourite actor? I have read so many articles in papers which say this same thing. I do love my father’s acting. But I loved Salman Khan as a kid very much. I mean, who didn’t. Now that we are clarifying things, we also heard that your father had approached Salman but later on there was some is-

sue between them‌ Look. These all were just plain and simple rumours. Dad never asked Salman to launch me opposite him. He was very happy with the fact that Salman supported dad to get back into films with Partner after he had quit politics. But he also maintained always that Salman has not taken the burden of our whole family that he will be launching me. If I had to do something in movies it had to be on my own identity.

Agreed. Talking about your dad as an actor, he is famous for his superb dancing and impeccable comic timing. How much of both these have you imbibed from him? Did he give you any tips before this film in either of these? Well actually you will have to wait and watch the film to know how good or bad I am in these two fields you mentioned (laughs). Talking about tips, I clearly remember the day when I told him that I also wanted to be an actor. He made me sit down and explained the pros and cons of the profession. He made it very clear that it wasn’t a piece of cake and it involved a lot of hard work. He made sure that I was brought up like a princess, but when I wanted to enter into films he was a bit concerned as he had known the hardships of the profession. The rest he said, I would have to handle it on my own and learn with the flow. Will Govinda produce a film for you? Will both of you be seen as father daughter ever in a film? Trust me, it depends on his mood. If he wants to produce, he will. He has produced his first filmAbhinay Chakra and he very busy with its work. Once that is done, we will think about whether he wants to produce a film for me or not. As far as being paired as father-daughter, I think he should never play my father onscreen. He could play characters like my mama or my chachu or something like that. Our pairing will be funnier in those relations. As father-daughter, it will become a bit too emotional. Finally any actor or director in your wish list? I have been saying it over and over again. I would want to work with Vipul Shah and yes withAkshay Kumar in the film (laughs).

Who is giving Aamir Khan sleepless nights? Wait!! What? That’s something new you wouldn’t have heard before about Mr Perfectionist. Read on to know the full story… Aamir Khan is famous for his perfectionist ways. He is known to be a no-nonsense person. People close to him vouch for the fact that he takes his health so seriously that he prefers being an early to be early to rise person. But our sources recently confirmed that for the past few weeks, Aamir is having sleepless nights. What would he be doing throughout the night? More so, who is actually keeping him awake? We wonder… Actually it is none other than his Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari. We all know that Aamir has bulked up for the role of a wrestler in his upcoming movie, and being the perfectionist that he is, he stays awake watching local Indian wrestling matches on TV. Sources close to Aamir confirm that one night while channel surfing, he happened to stumble upon DD channel, where a very desi style wrestling match was going on. It was almost about 4 am and the actor went on to spend another hour just watching the match and learning things from it. When he discussed the same with the director, he asked the actor to keep watching the shows daily so as to get more and more used to with the sport’s intricacies. After doing a bit of research, Aamir found out that the show airs everyday at that same time only. So now, he has been trying to sleep early and setting an alarm for 4 am. He wakes up and watches the matches with utmost diligence. He has been watching and understanding the body language of a wrestler and the way they tackle a fight. Spokesperson of Aamir Khan confirms the news and adds,”Aamir gets completely involved in whatever he does and for him time does not matter. He has been watching wrestling matches for sometime now.” We have heard other actors these days trying to go that extra mile to make their characters look perfect, but it seems Aamir is on a completely different level altogether. No one can beat him when it comes to being the Mr Perfectionist of Bollywood. What do you think BollywoodLifers?

The Bade Dilwaale Khan The two Khans, Salman and Shah Rukh Khan have certainly not forgotten their days of struggle, times when they waited for their breaks in films. They had gone through all the ups and downs that finally led them to their goals after which they never had a chance to look back. They are two of the biggest stars of Indian cinema today and can do anything for anybody and change their lives. They are the kind of human beings who feel it is their duty to help others in the best way possible, especially when it comes to promoting new talent. Salman has always been known as a Khan who has gone out of his way to help all those in need. The biggest example of his being a good man who tries his best to work for the good of others is his NGO, “Being Human” which has made all the difference to thousands of humans. He is also known for all the good work done under his Salman Khan Welfare Trust which helps the sick and the needy and his work for the welfare of the villagers of Panvel who look up to him as their saviour, guide, guard, guardian and their support system at all times of crisis. But Salman is best known for the way in which he promotes people in the industry in different sections. The first and best examples are his two brothers, Arbaaz and Sohail and his brother-in-law, Atul Agnihotri. It is a fact that they cannot deny that they would not be what they are today if it was not for their “Sallu Bhai”. Salman has also been promoting new talent from time to time. He has encouraged and inspired producers, directors, music directors and new actors. He is the one man who is responsible for actresses like Somy Ali, even Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif to take their first few shaky steps towards stardom. They may accept the reality and the truth or not, but history is witness to the role he played in grooming them to be the big stars they ultimately became and then forgot

all about him, which he doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he has only continued promoting other new girls. Among the girls he turned into big heroines just by agreeing to be their hero are names like Zarine Khan who he chose to play his lady love in the most ambitious film of his career, “Veer” which was also the first film which was based on a story written by him. He recently had Daisy Shah as his heroine in yet another big film of his, “Jai Ho”. It is a different matter that both these films bombed at the box-office, but Salman has not stopped looking for new heroines to be cast opposite him. Salman is now determined to start a big film with two newcomers. He had acquired the rights of Subhash Ghai’s film of the eighties, “Hero” and feels that it is the right time to start making or rather remaking “Hero”. He has already decided to cast Suraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty in the film. Suraj is the son of Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, who is one of the alleged names involved in the Jiah Khan suicide case, but nothing matters to Salman and he will see that Suraj plays the hero in “Hero” when it is made. Athiya is the daughter of his friend and co-star Sunil Shetty and Mana. They will form the lead pair of “Hero” which will be made under the supervision of “Sallu Bhai”. Salman has many other plans to see that many more talented people, young and old are given the opportunities they deserve, because like he says, “I too was a newcomer once. I know what it is to struggle to make a place in this industry where the competition is so very tough. It is my humble effort to see that people who are talented don’t have to struggle like a young man called Salman Khan struggled once even though he had a big daddy like Salim Khan to support him if he needed his help, but wanted to be whatever he could be all on his own”... Shah Rukh Khan was a theatre actor in Delhi who first came into the limelight with a few TV serials, the best being “Circus”. His role in the serial was what caught the attention of several filmmakers in Mumbai and he was called to Mumbai by Saeed Mirza and Akhtar Mirza who

had made “Circus” to try his luck in films and he was lucky to find breaks in films like “Dil Aashana Hai”, produced and directed by Hema Malini, “Baazigar” directed by Abbas -Mustaan in which he played a negative role and “Deewana” in which he played another negative role and topped it all by playing the “devil” in Yash Chopra’s “Darr” starring Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla. It looked like he would be branded as a villain for the rest of his life, but he had the talent to break the image which was being created for him and emerged as a romantic hero which he still had and one of the best romantic heroes to have ever come to Hindi films. The boy from “Circus” is one of the leading producers who has the ability to take any risks. He has been the guide to lead several men and women to their goals. But what he as a producer has in mind now is something that will warm the hearts of many. His latest plan is to start six new films, but what is more important is that he will make these films with as many newcomers as possible. He and his company, Red Chillies are already in the process of finding all the new talent he needs to fulfil his own ambition as a producer who he says, “was a nobody from some place in Delhi and who the industry and the people gave a place from where he could reach the very top, all thanks to them”. It is indeed a very big gesture by the two big Khans who are ruling the industry. It is their decisions to promote newcomers that can not only change the destinies of many young people, but can also change the face of the industry which is now looking faceless with the same old stars appearing in the same kind of films again and again and taking the industry almost to the brink. Who knows the decisions of these two Khans can do what people believe can’t be done.

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh to get engaged in February 2016?

Well, that’s what the latest goss suggests Deepika Padukone is all set to get engaged to alleged boyfriend Ranveer Singh soon. Our source informed us that the two love birds have got an approval from both the families and are all set to exchange rings and make their relationship official in February 2016. The source further added that both their parents have met and given a go ahead for their relationship. While talking about marriage the Bajirao Mastani actor said, “I am going to turn 30 in July. I had a different take on marriage, family and relationships. But I have matured. Earlier I was uneasy at the rate in which divorces were happening among professionals…I believed people were happier being single and marriage was redundant. But in past three years some experiences have changed my outlook.” A few days ago Ranveer had said, “I used to resist growing up but it is happening very organically. I am 29 and have a very simple aim today. I want to be an honourable family man. I have been thinking a lot about settling down.” Though Ranveer and Deepika have never admitted to their relationship, their off screen chemistry and admiration and efforts to spend time with each other have spoken a lot about what’s happening between one of Bollywood’s most favourite jodi. Not too long ago, the Dil Dhadakne Do actor flew to Bangalore to celebrate Ms Padukone’s daddy’s 60th birthday bash before he left for Malaysia to host IIFA awards 2015 with Arjun Kapoor. We hear the Ram-Leela actors played perfect hosts during the birthday celebrations in Bangalore. While it is a norm for the IIFA hosts to rehearse at least two days in advance, Singh was an exception. The actor being a thorough professional finished with the rehearsals before he flew to Bangalore. Well, now that we have got some goss about the two getting engaged, we can’t wait for the big day. Keep watching this space for more updates on this one.

Rana and I became best friends while shooting for Baahubali “Prabhas”

Want to know what the towering young hero of Baahubali had to say about the film? Read on to know the little anecdotes which Prabhas has shared about the film exclusively to Bollywoodlife Being the hero of India’s biggest motion picture, one might think the actor to have a lot of attitude. But I was completely bowled over by his humble nature, as he shared his experience of shooting for SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus for over 300 days. Recently, I had this golden opportunity to catch up with Prabhas, who is the leading man of Baahubali: The Beginning, which is releasing on 10th July. And we spoke to great lengths about the film, the director and ofcourse Karan Johar. Few years back you did a film with Rajamouli called Chatrapathi. Now again you got the opportunity to work with him in Baahubali. How different are the two films? Chatrapathi was a small film with medium budget. We shot just for 80-90 days for it. Compared to Chatrapathi, Baahubali is 10000 times bigger, made at a very large scale. The entire film of Chatrapathi is equivalent to one scene of Baahubali. Also, you can see how much Rajamouli has evolved as a director from Chatrapathi to Baahubali. In an audio launch function, Rajamouli praised you and said that the film couldn’t have been made without you and your support. Your views on that…. I take it as a compliment. Yes, I am very important for the film since I am playing the lead character. While shooting on and on for nearly 300 days, both me and Rajamouli didn’t show a hint of frustration as it would have demoralised the entire team. And I am really happy that we managed to endure those tough times and have come up with a good film. Did it ever scare you to give two years of your dates just for one film?

No, it didn’t. I knew from the beginning that it was gonna take time. After finishing the first schedule, I told my friends it would be wrapped in another 6 months. But with completion of the schedule, the number of months of work left only increased. They had planned to shoot the war sequence in 70 days, but it took around 120 days. I am playing two characters in the film – one has to look 95 kgs and the other had to weigh around 80-85 kg. So, I had to look like either of the two characters throughput the shoot, which means I can’t take up any other film. I knew all that. Plus, Baahubali is not a film where you give 20 days of your dates in a month and then work on an another project and then comeback to shoot this film again. It required great level of commitment. Plus, it was my duty to make the producer and director feel comfortable by showing my support, since it is not a normal film. It is a once in a lifetime film. You have tried your hands on rock climbing with this film. How was the experience? For first two days I was little tensed as it was completely new for me. Later on it became highly enjoyable. It is a very interesting sport. In fact, WWE stars were the ones who trained me in rock climbing. You just have to use your two fingers to climb up a steep mountain. It was a great experience. Later, after the shoot I used to go rock climbing on my own since there are lots of hills around Hyderabad. What kind of rapport do you share with Rana? Before the shoot, I have met Rana two or three times. But it was during the first schedule of the film that we got close. Later. in the second and third schedule of the shoot, we became best friends. Me and Rana used to be a source of entertainment for everyone in the sets. Sometimes Raja used to come and shout at us, and then we would realise

that it is not that kind of a film where you an go on having fun, there is a certain amount of dedication required. Whenever Rana was not in the shoot, I used to feel like how am I going to have fun without him around. We shot together for nearly 150 to 200 days. Baahbubali is almost like a two hero subject. If we two didn’t get along well, then it would have been bad for the film. But luckily everything turned out well and we became close friends. How important do you think was the success of the trailer? It was very very important. How many people know me in North? in fact how many people know Rajamouli? So being India’s biggest production, made at a such a grand scale, it was important for the trailer to get noticed by the people. According to me, trailer of Baahubali is most important part of the film as it created a buzz around the movie. How important was Karan Johar’s role? Rajamouli is a big name in Telugu and Tamil cinema. But in Bollywood, you can’t sell the film on his name. So when Karan Johar came onboard, we were all so excited. It is a great honour for Baahubali team that Karan Johar is presenting our film. When Rana narrated him the film for the first time, he said,” Wow! It looks like avatar. The women characters are so strong in the movie. It is probably India’s biggest motion picture.” On hearing those words coming from Karan, who is a big name in the entire country, it was very pleasing for us. His support for Baahubali is very crucial for the film’s success. Now with the film releasing in Hindi, Baahubali has a pan India appeal.People from various parts of the country are going to watch it. Does it add to the pressure on you or the film? Earlier, when I used to do films, it was only in Telugu. So I used to be nervous thinking how the film is going to fare in different parts of Andhra and Telangana. But now I don’t from where to start as the film will be watched by people from all over the country. So, I am trying not to think about it. What will happen will happen. I might just go away from somewhere or do meditation on the first three days after the film’s release. This will be your first introduction to Hindi cinema. Would you want to do more work in Bollywood? Definitely. If I get a chance why not? With which filmmaker you would want to work? First of all, getting a chance itself is difficult. How can I choose a director? But my favourite filmmaker is Raju Hirani. I have loved all his films. I can watch Munna Bhai MBBS 100 times, I can watch Lage Raho…100 times, I can watch 3 Idiots 100 times. I even loved PK. But these three are my favourite. Any memorable moment from Baahubali? The entire film is memorable. I am a very emotional person. I know Rajamouli for over 10 years. There is an emotional connect between us. Plus, the film was so big. No one has ever attempted something like this in Indian cinema. For example, we had to assemble a

statue which weighed over 8 tons. So we got two industrial cranes to do the job. We thought it would be enough. But it took more than 4 cranes and four days to put the statue together. Something like this would have been done in four hours in Hollywood. But since we were new to all this, it took us a lot of time. Rajamouli and all his technicians have done a fabulous job over the span of three years. Prabhas, a lot of films in Telugu have postponed their release in anticipation of Baahubali. Your thoughts on that… It shows the kind of respect the film has in the industry. The fans have been waiting for it for over two years. It is a big unique film, not a regular commercial flick. So when a film like Baahubali is releasing, it is very nice of other filmmakers to kind of hold back their films and give Baahubali a good run at box office. With which heroine do you share best onscreen and offscreen chemistry with? Anushka Shetty is very close to me. we have done films together. I even know her family well. I am very good friends with both Anushka and Tamannaah. Did you have to turn down any interesting film offers while shooting for Baahubali for nearly three years? Yeah there were few offers. But I never used to hear the script, as I had given all my dates ot Baahubali. Who can give me a better film than Baahubali anyways? So I used

to refuse before even hearing the narration. Were you ever afraid that people might forget you as you were away from big screen for nearly three years? I never felt like that. I knew when the trailer will release, it would have a great impact. And also the audience knew something big was happening. There was so much buzz around the film during the shoot. People where eagerly waiting to hear anything about Baahubali. So I never had the problem of being ‘ out of sight, out of mind’. Will the audience response on first part of Baahubali affect the second part? We are starting shooting for part 2 in August. And yes, there will be some affect of the first part’s box office performance. I hope it has a positive effect on the second part. You did a blink and a miss cameo in Action Jackson. Tell us how that happened. Prabhu Dheva sir is a close of friend of mine. So one day, he called me and asked me to come to his house. I was on a break from Baahubali shooting after surgery that time. So when I went there, Prabhu sir asked me to do a dance bit for his film. And I was bit apprehensive about it. He had choreographed a difficult step for me, which was later done by Shahid I think. I said I can’t dance like this, I just want to come there and stand. Finally, he gave in to my request and that is how that song happened.

I caught up with hero turned baddie Rana for an interesting tete-e-tete about his upcoming film Baahubali Towering well over 6 feet, the bearded antagonist of SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus made his way through clutter of chairs and glass top tables, with a smile on his face. After shooting for nearly two years for one film, one might expect the actor to have become weary talking about the project. But as soon as I started quizzing him about the movie, which is touted to be India’s biggest motion picture, his eyes glittered with excitement of 6 year old who just laid his hands on a jar full of candies. I had the opportunity to catch up with Bhallaladeva of Baahubali, Rana Daggubati, as we discussed to great lengths about India’s most expensive film till date.

WOW! This looks like Avatar, said Karan Johar after watching few stills from Baahubali! “Rana “Rana Daggubati” Daggubati”

Baahubali is the first Indian film for which a foreign reviewer has done a shot by shot review. How does it feel when you hear this? It is India’s biggest war film till date. The last one I can remember is Mughl-E-Azam. No one has tried a war film in such huge scale. Initially we shot for the film in Telugu in Hyderabad but the kind of appreciation the trailer has got from Hindi and Tamil audience is our biggest victory. The reception which the trailer got made us feel that it is the first true Indian film for audience from all

parts of the country. Also, for the first time a Hollywood reviewer has given a shot by shot review of Baahubali, now that is exceptional. Only thing is that the reviewer thought me and Prabhas were the same guy. Yesterday, I saw some Arabic dubbed version of the trailer which someone had put up. All this proves that people are liking the trailer and that for someone like me or Rajamouli, who had been associated with the film for six years, is what we had imagined the impact of the film to be. How was it shooting a bilingual film and speaking in Tamil? I was born in Chennai. I speak Tamil. But the Tamil used in the film is called Sentamil, which is the purest form of the language. So first time I read the dialogue, I didn’t even know what it meant. Writer Madhan Karky wrote the Tamil dialogues. So first time he sent me the dialogues, I didn’t even know how to read them. So he used to tell me how to pronounce the words through whatsapp and I used to write it down in English or Telugu. After seeing such phenomenal response from Hindi audience for your dubbed film, did you ever wonder what would have been the response had Baabubali been a straight Hindi film? It would have taken another three or four years. Frankly speaking, Baahubali has very less dialogues. It is all about large set pieces and war sequences, but the dialogues are minimal. I finished dubbing for the film in Telugu in 5 hours. There are many close ups for which we had to shoot again to get the lip sync right, so that Hindi audience could the get the experience of watching a Hindi film and not a dubbed film. What training did you go through for your role? It’s been three years. What you are looking at is a smaller sized me. I was 20-25 kgs heavier than what I am right now. Me and Prabhas trained with body builders vigourously for 6-8 months. Peter Hein, the action director made us train with 3-4 Vietnamese trainers for about three months in mixed martial arts. He made sure that Baahu-

bali doesn’t look like any of the previous Asian war films till date. So we invented weapons that were very Indian and at the same time very different. I wield a maze in the film, but it is a chain maze. So first we would invent new weapon and then learn how to use it. Did you use body double for the film? No I couldn’t find one. Me and Prabhas were so big that there was difficulty in finding body doubles. By the end of the film, during last few scenes, Prabhas found a body double. But I was not so lucky. It used to be like Prabhas’ body double and Rana come to shoot the fight scene. You made your debut with Leader, which was a content driven film. Do you think content takes a back seat in Telugu cinema in front of superstars? Every year, we have some interesting films. Last year, there was Manam and Drishyam which did very well. This year, Oh My God remake did very well. There is a want for different content. Every time when a filmmaker like Shekhar or Rajamouli make a good film, they take around three years. But, yes Telugu film industry is a star centric industry. Even in experimental cinema, it is always about hero’s journey. It is never off beat. Tollywood is a very very commercial industry. Do you feel pressurised with the amount of money riding on the film, as it is still considered as a regional

film? I would be lying if I said there was no pressure. But the film has huge fan base in Telugu and Tamil. It is a very very big film down south. Also, now the film is releasing in Malyalam too. And in Hindi, we have Karan Johar and Dharma production to back us. So it is going to have a huge release in all four major industries. So there is a sense of security. But it is always a gamble.

Did you have a fascination towards Mahabharat just like your director Rajamouli? Since childhood I had interest in reading Amar Chitra Katha. I used to see Hollywood films like 300 and Troy,

and used to think to myself that our mythologies have so much content and such wonderful stories but why anyone isn’t making a film. So when Rajamouli called and Baahubali happened, it was like a dream come true for the child in me. How big is Dharma’s role in building Baahubali’s buzz? Baahubali was first shot in Telugu, then in Tamil and later it got dubbed in Hindi. I doubt the kind of buzz that the film has right now would have been possible without Karan Johar and Dharma productions. Now, the interesting thing to see is how people perceive it. Do they look at the film as a dubbed film? Someone was saying recently, that the trailer doesn’t look like it is a dubbed Telugu film. It looks like Avengers dubbed in Hindi. The trailer has been appreciated, so the take off is good. Lets see where we land. Did you turn down any interesting roles because you were busy with Baahubali? A lot of film offers came. But while shooting for Baahubali, I sported long hair and long beard and I looked like a bull. Plus it would be very wrong to this film, if I took up another project in between coz this is once in a lifetime kinda film. I did a small cameo in another period Telugu flick, Rudhramadevi. But apart from that I turned down all the other offers. How was the experience working with Rajamouli? Now that we talk about him, it seems it is a lengendary name. But while on sets, he is very cool guy, very focused and very precise with what he wants. When he narrated the film, I could literally visualise the film. We rehearsed for nearly six months based on vision before the start of shoot and I am happy to say that it has turned out really well. He is very good in managing people. He was the binding force for the entire unit. Not even a single actor or technician left the film over the span of three years.

Did you get any feedback from Bollywood stars after watching the trailer? The first person I showed the trailer to was Mr Amitabh Bachchan. After watching once, he said play it again. After watching it twice, he asked where did you guys make this and I said in Hyderabad. It was very kind of Mr Bachchan, someone of his stature to say I have never seen this in an Indian film. And I remember the first time I met Karan regarding the movie, I had nothing concrete to show him. So we guys made a bunch of graphic images which narrated the entire story. So I placed those images and started to narrate to him, and by the time I came to the third slide, Karan said,” Stop! Wow this looks like Avatar.” While promoting the film, we are using lines like India’s biggest motion picture. That are actually Karan’s words. He said you guys have some serious guts to make a film this big and say here you go. We wanted Baahubali to be a world class product, and to make that happen we need men like Karan Johar who will push it to the next level. Was it frustrating shooting for nearly three years with no end product in sight? Shooting part was always fun. As an actor you enjoy that process. But what was really frustrating was the post production cos for an actor there is nothing to do. Yet, you can’t change your look as there would be some patch work required later. Imagine walking around in the house with a long beard and hair, that was frustrating. Most memorable moment from the film? There was this one scene for which we had to assemble a 150 feet statue of myself. It weighed over 8 tons. It was amazing watching 4-6 industrial cranes trying to assemble the statue. Just the bust of the statue was 30-40 feet. So when it was finally assembled, it was incredible feeling to see my own statue.

There’s much more than meets the eye with this actress and the eye does not go wanting! The face of an International cosmetic product, Kajol has wowed her audience and the media with a fit, healthy body and a beautiful, clear face. Here’s taking a peek at this beauty’s fitness mantra:

Kajol Weight Loss Secrets Revealed!

The actress has lost oodles of weight in a relatively short span of six months after the birth of her second child, Yug. According to hubby Ajay Devgn and close friends, the actress follows a strict fitness regime with an extremely healthy diet. Her personal health consultant and fitness trainer, Shereveer Vakil, initially hubby Devgn’s trainer, is now working with Kajol to improve her stamina, boost metabolism and maintain a healthy weight and physique for her body type.

A Mind That’s Made Up:

Kajol’s excellent physique takes root from her mindset. The actress knew, even when she was pregnant that she wanted to shed the fat quickly after the birth of her child. She likens staying fit to practicing a skill. Gaining weight, she says, is like losing a skill. You want to stay fit, stay healthy and get back to practicing that skill as soon as possible. She is an extremely strong individual with a steely determination to get back into shape. And that won her half the battle.

Baby Steps:

One quality that has defined Mrs. Devgn both as an individual and as an actor is her realistic, practical take on life. The actress sets achievable goals that she knows she can commit to and delivers on them. Kajol has taken the same approach to losing weight – discipline and realistic expectations. Like her son, the star started off with baby steps. He took to crawling about the house and she took that first step towards weight loss. With each passing week, Kajol slowly increased the duration and intensity of her workouts, resulting in the lean physique she flaunts today.

Working Out:

There is no getting away from a workout. Kajol lost weight about 18 kilograms in just five months. Kajol works with her trainer to target the core muscle and fat areas in the body, strengthening one and burning the other. The workout is high intensity and Kajol pushes hard each day to improve her performance. The actress does endurance training, yoga, lifts and squats as part of her fitness regimen. She lifts weights and can handle 150 pounds and more in what is known as the ‘dead lift’, an intense, calorie burning, and muscle toning exercise. Kajol can easily handle about 300 push-ups, a feat for most women! But all in a day’s work for Super Mom Kajol!

Eating Right:

Like her fitness regime, the actor is equally strict about what she eats. Kajol weight loss diet consists of foods like fish, paneer, eggs, nuts, lean chicken, and milk. She believes in eating smart and ensures she has plenty of fibre for a fit body. The star is not given to unhealthy snacking or junk food frenzies. She also drinks plenty of water to stay hydrated and consumes fresh fruits, vegetables and health drinks to manage hunger pangs.

Kajol’s Fitness Mantra:

Stay focused, stay disciplined. If you are finding it hard to work out on your own, engage the services of a good fitness trainer and dietician to help you get a healthy, fit body. Ask Kajol about working moms and lack of time for themselves; pat comes the reply. ‘You have to cook, clean, teach, manage and otherwise take care of the house. If you aren’t fit, no one else is going to be able to cope! Carve out some time for yourself, at least an hour to make room for a fitness plan. And make sure you eat right, that is most of your battle won.’

8 Simple Yoga Poses For Glowing Skin

Moisturizers, night creams, face packs, peel off masks, toners, massage creams, scrubbers and gels; everything is stacked up on your dressing table. Have I left out something ladies? These are all, right? We use these beauty products to get that wonderful glow. But needless to say, nothing has worked out yet. We keep wondering how on earth these Celebrities manage to keep the glow of their skin on for years. Magic or expensive cosmetics? No, the name of the magic is yoga. Yoga is the answer to all physical, mental and spiritual development. Dull and loathsome skin besides being the result of external sources like unhealthy lifestyle also happens due to mental conditions like stress and unhappiness. It is easy for people when they say to throw away all stress but we alone know how difficult that is. Yoga helps out effectively when it comes to reducing stress and worries. First we’ll give you some yoga exercise that will help you to calm your mind drop down all stress. Yoga For Glowing Skin:

1. Breathing exercise:

Control your breathing through counts that will rejuvenate your mind and that is what makes this pose of yoga for beautiful skin so popular.

• Sit on the floor with legs crossed. • Close your eyes, relax and breathe normally. • Now breathe in deeply through both nostrils with the count of 10. • Hold your breath, again by counting 10. • Count another 10 to release the breath. • Practice this breathing technique for 5-10 minutes. This breathing exercise will help you control your mind and you won’t get stressed out easily.

2. Shirshasana (Headstand):

Shirshasana is a bit difficult pose but is great if you want to maintain a long-lasting glow and healthy look in your face. Since you are standing on your head, blood starts flowing downwards, thereby improving blood circulation in your face. By reversing the flow of gravity, a headstand simulates a “face lift” by letting your skin hang in the opposite direction, which means getting rid of wrinkles. The inverted position of a headstand also flushes fresh nutrients and oxygen to the face, creating a glowing effect on the skin. • Place a yoga mat on the floor. Beginners may use a few stacks of blanket or anything that is a bit soft and will give proper support to your head. • Sit on the floor in kneel-down position. Remember your teachers punishing you asking you to kneel down. Keep your spine straight and keep your hands on your knees. Take a few normal breaths and relax. • Next bring your hands in front of you on the mat or blankets (whichever you may be using), elbows on the floor and interlock your palms. See above picture. • Next position your head in between your interlocked palms. Refer to the above picture. Be careful not to hurt yourself. Take a few relaxing breaths before we move on to the next step. • Next try lifting up your body in a mountain position. Start with your knees, lift your hips and now you are supporting this position with your forearms, head and your toes. This is like a downward dog pose. See picture above. Balancing up till this position does take a lot of stamina, but with practice you will be able to do this. Balance yourself till this step and proceed again when you are totally comfortable with this pose. • This step requires a bit more test of your balance. Now that you have partially balanced on your head, lifted up your hips and standing on your toes, try lifting up one leg off the floor slowly and steadily. To make it easier, walk your feet towards your head, unless your feet would naturally want to lift off. • Now that you have lifted one leg, try lifting the other leg too. This will require a lot of strength on your arms and hand. But with practice, you’ll be able to master it. Beginners can ask friends to help them in balancing or you may also take support of the wall.

• •

To come down, bend your knees and curl down or bring down one leg and then the other as you had gone up. Relax in a kneel-down posture with some deep relaxing breaths.

3. Halasana (Plough pose):

• Lie down on your yoga mat straight and relaxed. Put your arms by your side with palms facing the floor. • Now slowly lift up your legs from the floor such that a right angle is formed between your upper and lower torso. Push floor with your hands so that it gets easy for you to lift your legs. Breathe and relax. • Next bring your legs more towards your upper torso and slowly lift your hips off the floor supporting and balancing yourself with your hands. • Continue lifting your legs and bring it beyond your head as much as possible so as to touch the floor beyond your head with your toes. • At this point, lift your back further so that now only your shoulder and your head is resting on the floor. • Now your back has formed an arch. Straighten your spine and support the two sides of your waist with your hands, elbows on the ground. Breathe normally. • Hold posture for 15-30 seconds before returning back to normal position.

Refer to the below picture for a clear step by step understanding. This is one of the wonderful yoga asanas for glowing skin!

Exhale when you twist your body. • Hold this position for 30 seconds. • Now turn your torso to your left while placing your right hand over your left

thigh. Stay for another 30 seconds. This asana of yoga for fair and glowing skin is great for anti-aging.

Again take 10 quick breaths. Then rub entire face with your fingers. Breathe properly at the count of 10. You’ll feel all your stress and tensions have disappeared. Director Manish Gupta is waiting for Vidya Balan and the Gandhi family’s approval to make the Indira Gandhi biopic! Vidya Balan had mentioned in an interview that she wants to play Indira Gandhi in a movie and looks like she has been presented with an opportunity! Recently, in an interview to After Hrs, Vidya Balan confessed that she’d like to play Indira Gandhi on screen. Soon after, she was approached for a biopic on the former India PM by Rahasya director Manish Gupta. Despite liking the script, Vidya is a little sceptical about taking it up. Manish confirms, “She has liked the script, but hasn’t given a go-ahead yet. Given that the film is on Indira Gandhi, there are precautions needed to be taken before we start.” Gupta further adds that the script needs to be approved by the Gandhi family. It has been titled Indira. He reveals, “My film will be a tell-all tale about Indira Gandhi — right from her birth to her assassination. It’s the story of her childhood, youth, rise to power as the Prime Minister of India, her fall to near-oblivion, her comeback as PM, her final battle against extremists and her refusal to discriminate on the lines of faith, that eventually led to her assassination.” VIDYA’S THE ONLY CHOICE “I approached Vidya almost three-four months ago. It would be wrong if I claim she has okayed the script. She feels it’s a nice story but she just told me, ‘How will you make the film? You don’t have the permission from the family’. I had been trying to get the permission months before I approached Vidya.” GANDHI FAMILY’S CONSENT — The Hurdle? Gupta knows that ‘it’s a sensitive issue’ so getting the permission won’t be easy.” I have been in touch with Sonia Gandhi for the last eight months. She is aware that I am doing the film. I want to meet her personally and take a direct commitment from her. That’s what I’m trying to do. Everyone who I have approached to be a part of the film wants a written permission before they can greenlight the project,” he adds. Gupta has done his research. “I read 26 books about her,” he revealed. Indira, the life of Indira Nehru Gandhi by Katherine

Frank, Indira Gandhi — a Biography by Pupul Jayakar, Operation Blue Star— The True Story by Lt Gen KS Brar, Tragedy of Punjab, Operation Blue Star and After by Khushwant Singh and Kuldip Nayar and Durbar by Tavleen Singh are just to name a few books that have been a part of Gupta’s R&D for the project. But has he spoken to someone close to Indiraji? “I haven’t met or spoken to people close to her, but the books I read are written by prominent people themselves. Pupul Jaykar was very close to Indira Gandhi, he was her best friend. One of the books is written by the army man who led the operation Blue Star. After reading their books, it was easy to create the narrative because they have given a very detailed insight into Indira Gandhi’s life and her political agenda.” PRODUCERS BHI MIL GAYE Manish is all smiles as he’s already found a producer to invest in his dream project. “A very big studio is interested in producing the film, provided I get the permission from the family. It’s one of the corporate houses, but I cannot name them because we haven’t worked out the technicalities yet,” he revealed. NO NAACH GAANA Unlike other biopics, Indira won’t be a typical Bollywood film. He argues, “The film is not of the typical Bollywood sensibilities. There won’t be any naach gaana in the film. We wouldn’t be showing Indira Gandhi dancing in the film! It’s like a Hollywood movie, much on the likes of a film like Gandhi! It’s on that scale.” RAJEEV AND SANJAY THERE TOO! Other than Indira, there will be characters for Indira’s sons Rajeev Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi as well. “Obviously, the film will be incomplete without their characters but I have not approached anyone yet because honestly, the movie will focus on Indira Gandhi’s character only. So the other people will be side characters

Remembering the legend“Deven Verma” I once asked him if he was happy doing the kind of comic roles in Hindi films and he looked very sad and asked me, “yeh comedy bhi koi comedy hai, you ask me if I am happy and I would be telling you a very big lie if I said I was happy. Comedy is one of the most neglected fields in our films and comedians are forced to play the buffoon, the man who is scatter- brained or with no brains at all. I frankly tell you that I am a comedian only because I have to make a living and there is nothing I can do better than act as a good comedian as long as they allow me to”. Deven Verma who tried his best to give comedy in films and comedians a certain status for almost fifty years gave up in disgust when he saw comedy being “ill-treated” and finally gave up acting and went back home to Pune where he was born seventy-seven years ago and finally died in the city of his birth in the early morning of December 1... Deven was a graduate in politics and sociology but always wanted to be an actor. He tried to be a leading man, but had to be satisfied with playing the comedian in Hindi films and he did his job to the best of his ability and without stooping down to the crass levels other comedians before his time and even after his time had reduced comedy in films to... He was very choosy about the roles he selected and even the directors he worked with. Deven Verma, the comedian started his career with films made by Dr. B.R Chopra and his brother Dr. Yash Chopra. He was like family in both the Chopra families and maintained his relationship with them, especially with Yash Chopra and his family who he visited and even spent days with when he had given up interest in films and was toying with ideas to make some good TV serials and was even asked by his friend of many years, Yash Chopra to direct a film for his banner long before Yash could build Yash Raj Studios and his son Aditya could take over the baton from his father. Deven wanted to direct a film but after seeing how films were being made and under what circumstances he decided to give up and spend the last years of his life in Pune with his wife Rupa who was the daughter of the great actor Ashok Kumar. The couple had no children but they had learnt to find happiness by themselves and being together most of the time...

Deven Verma could have done hundreds of films because he had the knack and the talent to connect with the crowd, especially the audience which understood the better and more subtle kind of comedy. He could have been tempted by all the money that was offered to him, but he preferred to do a good role than to roll in money which he said could never succeed in giving him the satisfaction he wanted as an artist who could play any kind of character but had unfortunately been branded as a comedian who could not even bring out the best of the comedian in him because of the roles written for comedians who were treated like what he called “spices” in the “masaala” that film entertainment in India had been turned into... But even as the odds against comedians kept growing with roles not being written for them and at a later stage the heroes taking on the roles of the comedians, Deven managed to keep his own brand of comedy alive. His best efforts as a comedian could be seen in the films made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chatterjee and Gulzar... If history is kind enough to remember the contribution made by some good comedians, it will find it very difficult to omit the name of Deven Verma mainly because of some of the roles he made memorable with his own style of bringing comedy alive. Anyone who has been seeing Hindi films during the last fifty years can never forget Deven Verma’s performances in films like like “Dharamputra”, “Aaj Aur Kal”, “Anupama”, “Devar”, “Mohabbat Zindagi Hai”, “Milan”, “ Khamoshi”, “Mere Apne”, “Anndata”, “Dhund”, “36 Ghante”, “Kora Kagaz”, “Chori Mera Kaam”, “Arjun Pandit”, “Kabhie Kabhie”, “Zindagi”, “Doosra Admi”, “Khatta Meetha”, “Anpadh”, “Chor Ke Ghar Chor”, “Dillagi”, “Golmaal”, “Lok Parlok”, “Thodisi Bewafai”, “Angoor”, “Bemisaal”, “Dil”, “Deewana”, “Andaz Apna Apna”, “Yeh Dillagi”, “Dil Toh Paagal Hai”, “Ishq”, “Kya Kehna” and “Calcuta Mail”, his farewell film. If you have seen any of these films made with some of the biggest stars, you will know that Deven Verma was not just an ordinary comedian or even a star-comedian, but was an essential part of all these films... Deven Verma had so much of talent in him that he found it very difficult to restrict himself to playing the comedian and that is the only reason why he diverted to producing and directing films. He made his debut as a producer with a small film called “Daana Paani”. But his next was a big step to produce and direct a film called “Besharam” with Amitabh Bachchan who was going through a bleak phase in his career and Sharmila Tagore who was at the peak of her career. The film was one of the many early flops in the career of Amitabh Bachchan. His next made what he called “a hot comedy” called “Badaa Kabootar” starring the sex bomb of the early eighties Asha Sachdev. He also produced “Yakeen” directed by Brij who made the classic comic film “Victoria No 203” and who brazenly gunned down his whole family before killing himself. He did not find it interesting enough to make films when the average number of flops was way ahead of the hits, a phenomenon which is a grim reality even today... Deven was not only a comedian by profession but a man who could light up a dark place or a sad face with his sense of comedy whose speciality was his perfect timing and his straight face... Sometimes it seems like some people like Deven would be given an extension by the creator of life, but that is only a wish, because it is only the final wish of the creator of life and the creator of death, the two mighty powers which find their greatest pleasure in playing with the lives and deaths of ordinary human beings, however extraordinary or powerful they may believe they are as now as long as life is kind to them and death only keeps waiting for a lapse made by life to snatch away even the most lovable lives which make life so rich and worth living, certainly a life like the life of Deven Verma...
