SHRADDHA KAPOOR SAID THAT SHE LEARNT 20 NEW DANCE FORMS FOR ANY BODY CAN DANCE 2 For actress Shraddha Kapoor it was not easy to match steps with co-stars Varun Dhawan and other dancers in the upcoming Remo D’Souza’s drama Any Body Can Dance 2, a sequel of 2013 movie of the same name.
Shraddha, 26, who did an item song in Karan Johar’s Ungli, said it was a challenge for her to be a part of the movie because she is not a trained dancer. “To look like a part of the team was very hard for me. It was both mentally and physically challenging. I have never done the level of dancing Varun and the other actors do in the film. I have never danced in any of my movies and suddenly I got the offer to be a part of this project. I wish I had trained myself more while I was doing this,” she told PTI. The Disney film, releasing on June 19, will see Remo’s dancing stars Dharmesh Yelande, Lauren Gottlieb, Raghav Juyal, Punit Pathak reprise their roles. Shraddha said it was a life-changing experience for her to work in the film as she has become more conscious about her fitness. “The kind of dance we did in the film, it demands a certain amount of physical strength and endurance. It kind of changed my life because I could see a change in my body. I could see my mentality changing. I have become a little bit more conscious about what I eat because I am a foodie. It is very nice to see those changes happening to me,” said Sharddha.
Like any girl in an Indian household, the Ek Villain actress also tried her luck in various dance forms but she is master of none. “I have always loved dancing. I have done little bit of dance with Shiamak Davar when I was 11-year-old. I also danced with Ashley Lobo’s company. I even attended few classes of ballet when I was younger. I learnt Kathak in school. That’s how I didn’t learn dance full time. But in this film, I got to explore it,” she said. She learnt 20 new dance forms for the film and the actress is happy that Remo gave everyone their due credit in the film. “Remo sir wanted us to do quite a few dance forms. He made us do some 20 dance forms but when you will watch the movie you will get to see that sir has deliberately kept a lot of wide shots so that you can see the whole group dancing together. This is a very important part of the film.” Her partially solo act Sun Saathiya from the film has earned her praises. “I wanted to rehearse more for the song but we had a tight schedule. I had only four days to rehearse for it. But I am happy that people liked it,” she said.
Shraddha Kapoor Shraddha Kapoor is an Indian film actress and singer who appears in Bollywood films. The daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor, she began her acting career with a brief role in the 2010 heist film Teen Patti, and followed it with her first leading role in the teen drama Luv Ka The End (2011). Kapoor received a Filmfare Award for Best Actress nomination for her breakthrough role in the highly successful romantic drama Aashiqui 2 (2013), and subsequently featured in the commercially successful thriller Ek Villain (2014) and the critically acclaimed drama Haider (2014). In addition to acting in films, Kapoor endorses several brands and products, and has launched her own line clothing for women. Early life and background: Kapoor, was born and raised in Mumbai into a mixed ethnic family. On her father’s side, Kapoor is of Punjabi descent, and on her mother’s side, she is of predominantly Marathi ancestry. Like her mother, Kapoor has stated that she is a complete Marathi. Kapoor’s family members, including her parents, Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kapoor, her older brother, Siddhanth Kapoor and her two aunts Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini Kolhapure are actors in Hindi films.]She did her schooling at Jamnabai Narsee School and then enrolled in the American School of Bombay. While there she played soccer and handball competitively. Later, she went to Boston, but subsequently left to appear in her debut film after she was seen on Facebook by producer Ambika Hinduja who cast her for a role in Teen Patti. Career Kapoor with her father Shakti Kapoor, who appeared in a cameo in Teen Patti Kapoor made her acting debut in the 2010 drama Teen Patti alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Ben Kingsley and R. Madhavan. She played the role of a college girl. The film received generally negative reviews though her performance was better received.
Preeti Arora writing for Rediff.com stated that “ hough a bit raw, she has a lot of potential.” Nikhat Kazmi reviewed: “Shraddha Kapoor makes an interesting debut as the edgy youngster who sheds her specs for sleaze, with alacrity.” Kapoor was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, however, the film failed to do well at the box-office. After her debut, she signed a three-film deal with Yash Raj Films and featured in their 2011 teen comedy Luv Ka The End withTaaha Shah. Kapoor portrayed the lead role of a teenage student who plots against her boyfriend after he cheats on her. The film underperformed at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics. However, Kapoor’s performance received a positive critical reception. Taran Adarsh wrote: Shraddha is a revelation, catching you unaware with a confident performance. She’s electrifying in the sequence when she breaks down after getting to know the true intentions of her lover. Komal Nahtaadded: Shraddha Kapoor does well. She performs very confidently and impresses in her second film. For her performance, Kapoor received the Stardust Searchlight Award for Best Actress. Kapoor was subsequently offered the lead female role in Aurangzeb as a part of her deal with Yash Raj Films. However, she signed on to Vishesh Films’ Aashiqui 2 instead, thereby cancelling the threefilm contract with Yash Raj Films. Kapoor performing at the promotional concert for Ek Villain, 2014 In 2013, Kapoor found her breakthrough role in Mohit Suri’s romantic musical drama Aashiqui 2, the sequel to the 1990 filmAashiqui. She was cast as Aarohi Keshav Shirke, a smalltown bar singer who becomes a successful playback artist with the help of a popular male singer (played by Aditya Roy Kapur). The film was a major box office success with a global revenue of 1.09 billion (US$17 million). Film critic Anupama Chopra called Kapoor a “real triumph” and added that her “porcelain face has a haunting vulnerability.” However, Vinayak Chakravorty of India Today wrote that she “looks pretty [though] fails to add spark.” Kapoor received several nominations in the Best Actress category, including one at theFilmfare Awards. That year, she also appeared in a guest appearance for the romantic comedy Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, playing the fiancée of Imran Khan’s character. Kapoor next reunited with Suri for the thriller Ek Villain (2014), for which she also sang the song “Galliyan”. The film tells the story of a hardened criminal (played by Sidharth Malhotra) whose terminally ill wife (played by Kapoor) is brutally murdered by a serial killer. The film was generally perceived to be plagiarised from the Korean film I Saw the Devil, although Suri claimed that it was an original film. In her review, Raedita Tandon of Filmfare called the film a “gritty, engaging thriller”, and stated that Kapoor was a revelation in it. The film eventually emerged as a major commercial success with
domestic revenues of over 1 billion (US$16 million). Her second release that year was Vishal Bhardwaj’s critically acclaimed drama Haider, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet set during the Kashmir conflict of 1995. She played the Ophelia character, a journalist named Arshia, opposite Shahid Kapoor and Tabu. Writing for Deccan Chronicle, critic Kusumita Das praised Kapoor’s effort in capturing the varied nuances of her character and noted that her portrayal was “surprisingly composed”. As of May 2015, Kapoor has completed work on the dance film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, entitled ABCD 2, opposite Varun Dhawan. She has committed to star as a singer in a sequel to the 2008 film Rock On!!, co-starring Farhan Akhtar, Purab Kohli, Arjun Rampal and Prachi Desai, and is filming for the action-drama titled “Baaghi” opposite Tiger Shroff. Off-screen work: In addition to acting in films, Kapoor has supported charitable organisations and performed for stage shows. In 2011, she walked the ramps of Lakme Fashion Week and India International Jewellery Week. In late 2013, she performed in a fund raising event organized by STAR India. She is the brand ambassador of several products including Lakmé, Wella, Vaseline, Gitanjali and Titan. In 2013, BollywoodHungama, called her “one of the most wanted names” in the advertising industry. In March 2015, Kapoor launched her own line of clothing for women, named Imara, in association withAmazon.com. In late 2013, a poll conducted by FHM India ranked Kapoor 5 on 100 Sexiest Women In The World 2013.
Amitabh Bachchan: Professionally, I am fond of Deepika Padukone! Amitabh Bachchan talks about his changing equation with daughter Shweta
One of my favourite screen characters is Sexy Sam from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. In my humble opinion, that is the coolest onscreen father in Hindi cinema. I also believe that no other actor except Amitabh Bachchan could have played that role. Any other actor as Sexy Sam would have cheapened it and come across as a dirty old man. Big B brings a certain dignity to all the characters he plays. The Angry Young Man from Zanjeer (1973) metamorphosed into an Angry Old Man in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap (2011). He pulls off both effortlessly — four decades apart. In his next, Piku, he plays Pa again to Deepika Padukone (after Aarakshan). As I see the father-daughter banter between them in the trailer, I can’t help wondering how he is as a father to his real-life daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda. Big B was game to share insights. Excerpts from an email interview… Define yourself as a dad in five words. (Please don’t say, ask Abhishek and Shweta) Wrong question! Describing a dad does not require five words, just one is sufficient, I am ‘Dad’. It’s the daughter who needs a voluminous encyclopedia to be described. In this, lies the definition that you may seek. Daughters define us fathers. We are that supple plasticine ready to be moulded by them, caricatured, constructed, formed in all shapes and sizes in accordance with their wishes and desires. A wish that we look forward to, a wish that we long for, a wish that we want to be a continuous part of our living. Which is why when they leave to acknowledge and acquire another ‘father’, we break all emotions and shed our deepest and most heart-breaking sadness in copious tears! Their mothers break too at the time of wedded departure, but they are not just mothers, they are experienced mothers. They were daughters too at the time of their departure to become a part of another environ, another home, another set of in-laws! Daughters step into their future homes, by taking that lota-filled-rice-container-kick, into the premises of their husband. While at the homes of their birth, the father and mother store and secure with zeal and compassion the roli-imprinted steps of her feet, on a piece of paper or cloth — sacred and revered, impressioned by the belief, albeit, symbolically, that she still abides with us! You think it’s tough being a mother and a daughter? Ask me… It’s tougher being Pa! You ’ve played senior characters — in Khuda Gawah, for example — when you were young. How different is it playing that age now in your 70s? A lot more realistic, believable, and able. Temperament, style, endeavour of the age, comes naturally at 70-plus. It’s the reverse that is improbable. Young to old spells commendability, spells appreciation as a performer if done well, and of some convince-ability. Old to old spells restricted movement, physical effort, lapse in memory for dialogues, restricted action, and lacked speed of communication. There are benefits, too. No arduous hours of sticking beards and ageing
wigs. A certain respectability on set, not as an accomplished artist, but as an aged elder. The voluntary chair to sit on after the shot, that glass of water that appears unasked for and the constant refrain… ‘How are you feeling, Sir? How’s the health?’ That is a business mandatory. Indisposition for a while or permanently, would sound or be the death knell for production — pun unintended. You play a 70-year-old with age issues. Off screen you are fighting fit and work out. How was it essaying a role completely different from you an individual? Shoojit, my director, be praised for putting me in this challenging environment. Just because you are old, does not necessarily give you the ability and acumen to play old in front of the camera. You require strength of character both physically and emotionally. Emotionally, age takes care of many artistic demands of script. Physically, fitness begets fitness for the execution of the role. I am not fighting fit. That is an anomaly, not just for me, but for any 73-year-old! But no harm in pretending that you are. Stomach in, chest out at public appearances, and giving the girth some refrain from such, as you plonk yourself into the realm of the ‘couch potatoed TV watching sloth.’ Who is the real Amitabh Bachchan more like? The character in Buddah Hoga Terra Baap or Piku? Smart attempt! No, baby… That is for me to know and you to find out… Or actually… you to know and me to find out! Hehehe!! Is age just a number? Your character in Piku is retired. And he keeps himself super busy. Did you have a reference point for the role? Reference points were the director and all my Bengali directors, of which there have been several, and most of all, my seven-year itch in the City of Joy — Kolkata. Busy… Most Bengalis are super busy with their exquisite art of questioning everything — a quality most admired by me and I am sure by many of the intellectual society — and their hypochondriac penchant for matters that concern health, especially their bowels. How do you make time for family in between all your commitments? I do not make time. Time makes it for me. In what ways is your onscreen equation with Deepika in Piku like your relation with your daughter Shweta Bachchan? Shweta is genetically mine. Deepika is professionally mine. Genetics rule. You will not be able to compare Shweta with any other. And I shall not accept any effort made in that direction; no father would agree with that. Professionally, I am fond of Deepika. I admire her work, her ethics, her composure, her determined effort to improve, which has been a revelation to most in the Industry. What she does, behaves, conducts, reveals in her personal life is none of my business. And quite frankly, no one else’s either! How is a father’s equation different with his son than the one with his daughter in your experience? For me, my daughter and son are equal. They will know equally what I am thinking, doing, reasoning, planning, working, travelling, watching, wearing, driving…. Difference? I may lapse into an odd expletive with Abhishek, with sufficient warning. Never with Shweta! I believe you and Deepika shared banter on the sets while rehearsing. Do you share that with Shweta as well? Yes, of course ! Equality pervades banter, too… You read Shweta’s column before it appears in the paper. did you know about her writing skills before she began
penning a column? Did you urge her to write? Yes, I do read her column before it goes to press. She sends it to me. She has been a skilled writer from a very young age. Her letters, her little snippets that she would compose in school, all were most impressive. And yes, I do encourage her to write a lot. At times, I seek her inputs on subjects that I have to speak on publicly! How was Shweta growing up? She was an elegant lady from the day she was born. Quiet, observant, shy and later, freer to express her thoughts. In your opinion, is Shweta a mama’s girl or daddy’s girl and why? I would imagine she was the same for both. But I can say, generally, daughters tend to speak more to their mothers. They would come to the father at a crisis, an opinion, a concern. But daughters are both mama’s and daddy’s girl, I would imagine. How has your equation with Shweta changed over the years especially after her marriage? Earlier, I was protective of her… and still am! Now, she is protective towards me. She will fight injustice, malice, criticism against me and simultaneously be involved in suggestion and opinion. Were you a fun father or a strict dad? That is for Shweta to answer. All I can say is that I have never in my entire life, ever, lifted my hand on either Shweta or Abhishek. And truly they have never given me reason for it either. I have admonished them when they were younger. My admonishments today are balanced with reason and calm rather than annoyance and demonstrative anger! What’s the rapport you share with Shweta’s daughter? Are you an indulgent grandfather? I love her. Which is to be expected from any grandfather. And I would love to indulge her. But she has seldom given me occasion to do so. I would, if given liberty, spoil them to eternity. But her mother would never allow that. Which says a lot for her and her mother both. There is a great sense of pride in this. Shweta is also set to do a food blog for NDTV. If you had to give her suggest ideas to her on what to write what would it be? I would absolutely be the wrong person for any kind of advice on anything that spells culinary! Shweta is one of the most stylish girls in Delhi — she has been featured on Vogue covers. Do you think your style/persona in some ways has rubbed off on to her? Shweta is mature enough to guide her own style, and if you find her to be stylish, that credit should go to her exclusively. If you were to seek a genetic link, then I would opt for my mother. She was the epitome of style, fashion and presence. In the trailer, one sees Deepika getting annoyed by some of her dad’s habits. Any habits of yours that your family teases you about? Oh boy! That is a delightful question that the entire family would want to contribute to — in great excess! In the film you and your daughter go on a road trip. Shweta recently wrote about going on a holiday with her mom and daughter. When was the last time you took a trip with Shweta? Any fav vacation’s memories? Yes… but I would need a book to write about it and right now, I do not have the desire or the presumed ability, to take on the mantle of an author.
Rhea Kapoor on haters who trashed Sonam’s Elie Saab gown: WHO CARES about the internet trolls?
The stylist who is also Sonam Kapoor’s sister, styled her for her recent Cannes 2015 outing…
Rhea Kapoor laughs off haters on social media who trashed Sonam’s Elie Saab gown on the red carpet! Sonam Kapoor’s previous looks at Cannes have all gotten big yeas. This time she got a fair share of nays as well. Social media was trending with memes of her dress, trolling her sense of fashion. We got Sonam’s sister and stylist Rhea Kapoor to get talk about styling her sibling and her reaction to the memes and all things Cannes. Read on for excerpts…
How did you put together Sonam’s looks for the red carpet?
I feel like people put a lot of emphasis on getting things perfect, but with Sonam and I, it has never been like that. For us, it has always been about playing dress-up. We just want to have fun expressing ourselves and if one is happy and enjoying what she is wearing, it’ll show on their face. So when I put together a look for Sonam, I try to do it in a way that we don’t get bored of ourselves. I keep things fresh, just go online and figure out what we haven’t done before. Also, I keep in mind what will make things exciting for Sonam as well because at the end of the day it is just a dress and she should have fun with it! I never want Sonam to feel the pressure or be in a situation where she feels that she can’t be herself. Basically, I just look at a lot of stuff (the outfits for the red carpet) if something makes me smile, if it makes me happy and excited, I email or call people for it and we try it. Usually, when Sonam puts the dress on, she knows. For us, it has always been like that instead of us over-thinking about it or trying a million things. With me and Sonam, it has always been very instinctive, we always keep it spontaneous.
How do you decide which designers to zero in on? Is there a specific theme you do every year?
There are some people we have relationships with. We have a wonderful relationship with Mr Saab of Elie Saab. I went for the show in Paris and I saw the lime-green dress on the ramp (Sonam’s second red carpet look at Cannes 2015) and it just made me SO happy. It had such beautiful movement, it was so girly, it reminded me of the classic actress Judy Garland, the 40s and 50s.I actually liked two gowns from that particular collection and we got both to Cannes. When Sonam tried on the dress she was like, ‘I want to wear this!’ The minute she put it on, she knew how happy it would make her to walk the red carpet in that dress. With the Ralph and Russo gown, I really wanted Sonam to go with colour this time because we always see whites and blacks on the red carpet. I think Sonam saw the gown somewhere online and she sent me a picture saying that she wants to wear it at Cannes. Sonam and I are blessed to get the opportunity to go to Cannes, she knows how lucky she is to walk the red carpet so why let it go waste? We just celebrate it.
Sonam’s Elie Saab gown this year was trashed on Twitter and it launched a million memes. Whenever you do anything out of the box, you get positivity and negativity for it. Initially, when Sonam started walking the red carpet, a lot of people didn’t get it. So coming to the Elie Saab gown, we got fantastic press for it internationally, and about the internet trolls, WHO CARES? If you feel beautiful, you should wear it. I think, that no girl should give a shit about what other people think. You should wear
what you like, be bold and fearless, if you feel good, that is all that matters. I loved the dress, it was bold and fresh, it was so Sonam. When she put the dress on she looked like a princess. It was couture and luxury and I absolutely loved the dress. For me, it’s very easy to go and pick a commercial gown, which is figure-hugging and people will understand it. But we never did the Elie Saab gown for the reviews. If people are making memes and all it means that it is a point of conversation, that’s what fashion should be about, it is supposed to make you think and feel excited. Think of how boring it is to look like how everybody wants you to look! Like people come up to me at times and are like, “Rhea maybe you should wear some lipstick and dress up more…” and I am like if I want to walk around frigging Bandra with a bag on my head, I will do that and not care about what the world expects me to be like. Every girl should be like that. So, all the hoopla about Sonam’s dress is funny, I saw some of the memes and I thought they were hilarious. I saw one about my dad and I thought that was a little weird (laughs), but dude who cares, you should be able to laugh at yourself. Sonam and I are not taking it too seriously.
Sonam and you?
While you were putting the looks together, were there any disagreements between
When it comes to clothes and styling, we usually have the instinct to say yes to the same thing. When she puts something on, she and both can feel that it is the outfit for her. Being sisters we have a really strong connection, so we don’t really disagree much on clothes. We may disagree in life of deeper things, but that is sorted out through communication. We used to have childish fights when we were kids and Sonam used to pinch me! (laughs). But we have obviously stopped doing that now! So when it comes to style, we are at the same wavelength. I have been styling her for eight years so we get each other.
Now that Sonam has cemented herself as a fashionista, how much pressure does that put on you?
A couple of years ago, when people started giving this label, it was a bit overwhelming but afterwards I was like, “You know what, this should be about having fun!” And I’ll be very honest with you, in our society if a girl likes to look pretty and wears pretty things, people like to think of her as stupid! They like to
put in a box. I am an intelligent woman, I like to do other things and I like beautiful clothes which make me feel good about myself, that doesn’t make me stupid, that makes people who think so close-minded! There was this whole phase when people were like, “Oh! Sonam is only known for her fashion ad nothing else…” they were forgetting that she is the first actress of her generation to have the guts to carry a film (Aisha) on her shoulders. Post Aisha, people tried to compartmentalise her as someone who is too much into her looks and some of it fell on me too because I style her. If we like pretty things it doesn’t make us any less intelligent, there is a lot more to us than jus fashion and we know it! So if you talk about pressure, which was the only kind, I used to feel in the past, I found that really sexist and it used to bother me. If a man loves cars he is not a lesser man, he is a stud! But if a woman wants to dress up beautifully, she is dumb or air-headed! This disgusting double standard just puts pressure on women, who want to be taken seriously in their profession and just dress down because they want the world to not think of them as stupid. Why can’t I be soft, feminine and strong at the same time? Why can’t I be a little OTT, take a chance with dressing up and still be a woman of substance? There was a phase when I even considered telling Sonam to just put on a jeans and a T-shirt and pretend like she is not who she is, and even Sonam thought of it as something that was affecting her career. But then we were like, “You know what, screw this!” Nobody should tell you who you are, just be happy and express yourself.
Apart from Sonam, whose style did you like at the Cannes 2015 red carpet?
I like women who really think out of the box to express themselves. Like Kate Blanchett this year, look at her Giles Deacon gown, I was obsessed with it! I even love a woman who wears trousers on the red carpet, I like women who take risks because who wants to be bored. You get this fantastic opportunity to be on the red carpet, be yourself and don’t care what anybody thinks. Katrina looked beautiful in the red Elie Saab gown, I liked seeing her in such a strong colour. Also, I liked her day look where she wore the Milly outfit, it was so cute! I feel next year is going to be even better. I loved Aishwarya’s Ralph and Russo gown, she looked beautiful. Kat has a very minimal style so she puts herself across like that, Ash is very classic and old world, Sonam is more like funky and fun, so I think everybody played in their own space really well!
You took Indian designers out there too, unlike a lot of other actresses… We try to do it every year. Indian designers are incredibly talented and they have a set of skills that nobody else in the world has in terms of embroidery, drapes or understanding a woman’s body. Sonam and I have tried reinventing ways of how to drape a saree. It is a privilege and honour for us to represent the Indian designers abroad. When Sonam wears Indian outfits, she feels so proud. And people come up to her asking if she is wearing a saree and the way she lights up is amazing! We are the ones who can take Indian designers abroad because that’s where we come from. Abu-Sandeep are classic and it was lovely to do a fresh take on their stuff, last year we had done Anamika Khanna. Next year I want to take an Indian piece and take it to another level because the level of satisfaction I get from it is unbeatable.
“I wanted to be a criminal psychologist”
Every film you do is one different from the other. Do you like to accept new challenges as an actress? Each actor wants to improve his ability. With each film, I like to face new challenges. I don’t like to be typecast. People should not think that I can only do a particular type of role only. So in each and every role I take up, I try to present myself differently. What do you want to achieve in the next 10 years? I want to improve my work. I would like to improve my acting skills and work on my diction. I want to improve in every way. I progress in life every day. But one cannot change in a day. It takes a lifetime to learn and achieve something. I don’t have any specific goal, but I am keen to see that how much I evolve with time and how much I can achieve. What is that one thing that can make a woman’s life better? I think it is self-respect. Often, we take on a lot of pressure to dress and look like other women. Most girls think like this. But I feel we should know our strengths and try to enhance them. Nobody is perfect. Always remember that Jin logon ko hum mahan samajhte hain, unme bhi kamiyan hai (the people we regard as greats also have their own set of flaws). What would you be if you were not an actress? I wanted to be a criminal psychologist. I have always been curious to know how a criminal mind works. I am quite interested and intrigued by their journey and how they became criminals. What do you do to de-stress yourself? I love to swim and I go for a long swim once in a while, which relaxes me and relieves me of all tensions. We love your fashion sense. Where does it come from? I enjoy experimenting with my clothes. As a child, I used to try something or the other from my mother’s and my father’s wardrobes. I’ve always liked to mix and match things and so I gradually developed my personal fashion sense and what looks good. Sometimes I wear a suit with a tie and hat, which gives me a different look.
How is it to judge a reality show? It’s not easy to critique someone but I don’t think I have a problem with being honest. But as long as you can critique and encourage them, then the criticism becomes constructive. If you just criticise and be mean, it becomes destructive. And I always treat people the way I like to be treated by them. What would you be if you were not an actress? I don’t know, but I never wanted to be an actress. Till date my mother tells me when I was a little kid I told her I wanted to be the Prime Minister, a cop or even a judge. I even said I wanted to join the army or be a truck driver, but I never said that I wanted to be an actress. I went from criminal psychology to being an actress and then into cricket. You are a bold and outspoken person. Has it ever posed a problem for you? I don’t have time to think about what others think. I stopped thinking about what others think a long time ago. Because when you start thinking about that, you start feeling bad, you start looking bad and you can’t sleep. It’s not just one other person; there is just one ‘you’ and billions of others. I just think about the people who love me, whom I love and what they think about me. I don’t waste my time on yeh kya soch raha hai, woh kya soch raha hai (what does this or that person think). What kind of wife you would be? I will be the most amazing wife. What is status of your upcoming movie Bhaiyyaji Superhitt? We are going to complete the film when Sunny Deol finishes his film (Ghayal Once Again). We are going to start working on it very soon.
I will be the most amazing wife “Preity Zinta”
What depresses you? Whenever something in life is not on the right track, depression automatically sets in. But I can’t be sad for a long time. I am a happy person. What do you do when you are upset? I shut myself in my room, scream loudly and cry it all out. And in some time, I’m fine again.
I don’t know if people will like my look at Cannes this year, but I love it! “Sonam Kapoor” In an exclusive conversation with BollywoodLife, Ms Kapoor reveals all about her look at Cannes 2015…
Fashionista Sonam Kapoor is headed to Cannes soon. Also, her film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo opposite Salman Khan is slated for release this year and her clothing line Rheson is also coming out in September. Though looking a tad exhausted from her all-night shoot schedules for theNeerja Bhanot biopic, Sonam isn’t short on exuberance. Excerpts from the interview…
Big Social Media Plans
On Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, I am the only celebrity who has organic followers. I have never bought followers. I’m going to double my number of followers in the next two three years on social media. I’m going to hire a social media company now because so far I am doing everything on my own. I was thinking of vlogging, I am going to interact more with my fans through social media. I am going to start now, right before Cannes.
At the Cannes Red Carpet
I am not doing any work! (giggles) I am usually very nervous before setting foot on a red carpet. But then I have my sister Rhea, who is my stylist and she knows me so well so she only gives me things that are very comfortable to wear. There is big team of assistants, makeup artists and hairstylists that put you together but when you walk on that red carpet you just have to be confident and always be yourself. I’d never wear something that’s not me. As soon as you wear something that you feel awkward in, you’re going to look awkward wearing it.
What she’ll wear
It’s really easy to walk in those big gowns because they are constructed in a way that people can walk while wearing them (referring to her last year’s Elie Saab outfit at Cannes) or maybe it’s just me who feels that way (laughs). It was a lot of fun wearing that gown but this year is going to be quite different. I am going really quirky this year. I don’t know if a lot of people will like it but I love it
Shruti Haasan set to star Suriya’s Singham 3!
After giving two successful films in the Singham series, Suriya is gearing up for third installment of the franchise
It looks like director Hari is all set to make Singham 3 and the script is nearly ready. The latest buzz in Kollywood is that he is keen on casting Shruti Haasan in this film with Suriya. Talks are already said to be on with the actress who is busy shuttling between Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad for her current projects. Suriya has worked with Shruti Haasan in A R Murugadoss’s 7 Aum Arivu but that movie didn’t do well at the box office. Post that Shruti has had numerous hits in Kollwyood and it looks like Hari wants to cash in on her popularity. In the second film, it was Hansika Motwani who had been roped in. However, Shruti’s role is said to be quite meaty in this film. Anushka Shetty has been part of the cast from the first film and director Hari – keeping sentiment and superstition in mind – has a role in this third part as well. Singham 3 is said to release in 2016. Devi Sri Prasad is likely to score the music for this film as well and Priyan will handle cinematography. The movie will be produced by Suriya’s 2D Entertainment which produced Singham 2. The Singham series in Suriya’s career is one of the highest grossing films in Kollywood. With Shruti Haasan in the third film, it will definitely be bigger and more exciting.

The talented singer talks about her stint in the Voice India, what she did to convince contestants to pick her, the competition in the music industry and more
I sold myself on The Voice India “Sunidhi Chauhan”
It is a known fact that Sunidhi Chauhan is a mind blowing singer, but she has aspirations to do much more than that. She claims that she’d one day like to try her hand at composing music and even acting in films. With her new look and gorgeous figure, I’m sure she can give these actors a run for their money. Read excerpts from the interview… Are you planning to be a music composer now? I recently started composing music and I realised I can’t compose, but two days later a tune came to my mind and I thought okay maybe there is hope. Many of my music director friends often tell me that if you can sing you can definitely compose. Hopefully I’ll make a couple of songs and put them out soon. Indian Idol Junior 2 and The Voice India is coming around the same time. Why did you pick The Voice? I did Indian Idol (Adults) for two years. I wanted to do something different. And honestly speaking I
was not offered Indian Idol Junior 2. I was approached for several other shows which did not interest me. As soon as I heard about The Voice India, I wanted to go for it as it has a unique concept and I am a big fan. The format of The Voice is that it will look at an artist’s singing capability and nothing more. Will that remain throughout the season? It will build eventually. The singing capabilities will help the contestants clear the audition round. The second and third round will focus along with their singing on their overall personality. Among all the auditions that you’ve seen already, was there any one contestant’s voice that truly touched your heart? There have been two-three voices which I really loved, but I cannot talk about them. What were you looking for when you chose the contestants for your team? I was looking for a voice that came straight from the heart ‘coz ultimately only that connection leaves an effect, no matter how trained or non-trained you are. It’s the feeling and texture of the voice that touches you. I got a few voices which were bang on. So you prefer being a judge or a coach? I don’t like to be a judge, even on Indian Idol; I was not a judge, because I can’t judge anyone. I still need to figure
out a lot of things within myself before going out to judge anyone. This is a different concept; this is not about rating someone. The winner is not the only one who makes it big. Even those who’ve barely cleared a few levels are doing shows, and singing for movies. Nobody can stop a good singer. Do you ever feel threatened by budding talent? No… Music is not about feeling jealous or fighting. You just do music, it happens to you. If you put a lot of effort into it, it feels very mechanical. Just feel and do your thing and it sounds great. If they are there at that stage then there’s a reason behind it and they definitely have what it takes to make that music sound good. So all my love and wishes to all the new singers. In fact I get to learn a lot from them. And when some of them sound like me, it’s very inspiring it makes me push harder. To what extent did you go to get a contestant in your team? I offered them my lip sticks, perfumes; I even told one contestant that I’d dress up for him if he joined my team. I stood up on that chair, danced for them, I begged them. I sold myself saying that I am a superstar. I may not be very modest but I don’t boast about myself either. I have not even done these things in my dreams, but I have done it on this show ‘coz that’s the format of the Voice India.
10 bollywood Singers We’d Like To Hear Make A Comeback
No matter how many singers might be making their presence felt in Bollywood at the moment, no one can match up to these 12. We sincerely hope they read this and surprise us with a comeback! 1. Kumar Sanu In the 90s, Sanu ruled Bollywood. Nobody could sing romantic numbers like him. Additionally, he holds a world record in singing the maximum number of songs in a day. Even though he sang ‘Chammak Chalo Chaiel Chabili’ inRowdy Rathore, we are not satisfied. We can only hope that he decides to start singing for Bollywood again. Our favourite songs by Sanu are ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’ and ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’.
2. Anuradha Paudwal Paudwal has a record of winning five Filmfare Awards and 15 nominations. And she has sung songs in the maximum number of languages. In fact, she is a winner of our prestigious National Award. Do we have good enough reason to miss her? YES! She’s the person who sang the iconic ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’. Our favorite song by her, however, is ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi’.
3. Kavita Krishnamurthy The first time I heard the title track of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, I became a fan of Kavita Krishnamurthy. Her voice was so powerful that I could imagine no one else in her place. And that’s the view many people hold about her singing. Her last song was ‘Tum Ho’ in Rockstar, and she also performed at Madison Square during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US. We are sure that no one can match up to her melodious voice and we hope our music directors realise that and bring her back.
4. Hariharan His voice is truly magical and can take you into a peaceful zone, but we have been listening to only his old songs. Our favorite songs from him are ‘Tu Hi Re’, ‘Chappa Chappa’ and ‘Kitni Batein’.
5. Lucky Ali Accept it or not, when Kaho Na Pyaar Hai released in 2000, we were all obsessed with the song ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena’. The reason? Both Hrithik’s dance moves and Lucky Ali’s voice. Another time we were taken aback by his voice was when he released his album Kabhi Aisa Lagta Hai in 2004. However, after that we didn’t hear him much. It was only in 2010 when he sang ‘Hairat’ inAnjaana Anjaani that we saw him make a comeback. In 2013, he sang another song ‘Ya Husain’ for David, but we haven’t heard him after that. We want to hear you sing again. Mr. Ali, hope you’re reading this!
6. Kunal Ganjawala Do you remember listening to ‘Bheege Honth’ and going all crazy? Many of us had that song on repeat and it was sung by none other than Ganjawala. He touched a million hearts when he sung ‘Chana Ve Ghar Aaja Ve’ for a Punjabi album. He last sang the song ‘Maula Maula’ in Singham (2011). After that, we haven’t been lucky enough to enjoy a new number from him. We sincerely hope he finds his way back into Bollywood.
7. Falguni Pathak Every Indian girl born in the 90s knows who Falguni Pathak is because you cannot forget that soulful voice and those relatable lyrics. We have to admit that no one in the industry has been able to fill the void she left in our hearts. Our favorite song of hers is ‘Maine Payal Hai Chankai’.
8. Alka Yagnik Alka Yagnik has sung a total of 2482 Hindi songs. And we still cannot have enough. Her career spans over three decades and she has two National Awards in her kitty. It’s very tough to choose from her songs, but we love the title track of Hum-Tum and of course, ‘Ek Do Teen’.
9. Daler Mehendi
9. Daler Mehendi
He is a singer who was adored by the masses. We have all danced to ‘Tunak Tunak Tun’ and ‘Na Na Na Na Re’, and laughed out loud at all the people listening to him. Believe it or not, the best time to listen to him is when you are in an off mood. It’s tried and tested. Listen to ‘Dardi Rab Rab’ and all your negative thoughts will go away.
10. Kamaal Khan
He’s the man behind Sallu bhai’s hit number ‘Oh Oh Jaane Jaana’. Although he never created the same magic again, we’d want to hear more of such songs. And anyway, Kamaal already has enough reason to come back to B-town.
1. Lessons In Layering
Anushka Sharma wins the layering crown after this look. She sat front row at the Burberry show at London Fashion Week, dressed in the brand from head

4. I Don’t Care Hair
She doesn’t fuss over her hair. She’s cut it recently but it’s generally just left to it’s own accord. Down her shoulders, curling up if it wants.
5. Boho Bomb
This was the outfit I personally tried out and couldn’t believe I hadn’t before I saw her wearing it! The simplicity of the look kills me, Anushka wearing it kills me – basically the whole thing kills me! Anushka Sharma should only go boho, all day, everyday because if a look suits you so much, you need to own it girl! So now you know how to get her look. Just make sure you keep your makeup in check, Anushka doesn’t go too heavy on the eyes and the vibe for her beauty look is very au natural – just the way we like it!
Shahid kapoor’s workouts and diet I surely make it a point to exercise on the treadmill at least 15 minutes daily. I also try and workout one part of the body each day and if I am lucky enough to have time, I workout two parts, Shahid says.
Exercise It seems obvious, but to achieve a chiseled body like Shahid kapoor, you need to be extremely regular at the gym. And each workout has to be a challenging workout. At Shahid Kapoor’s level of fitness, making a challenging workout is even tougher. He needs to make sure that he grows or maintains his current muscle while keeping his body fat minimum. A fine balance between cardiovascular exercise and weight training is needed to get that chiseled body. Shahid has candidly admitted that he finds it difficult to maintain his physique while on a vegetarian diet. But that the same time, he is more than willing to walk that extra distance because of his hate for meat. “My body doesn’t get animal protein so I have to make up for the loss of it,” he admits. He further adds, “Maintaining a six-pack is damn difficult. You need a lot of motivation and a lot of dedication for it. But thank God, I have plenty of it.” Shahid’s online fitness video, which
features his trainer Abbas Ali became a rage among his fans and other fitness freaks. The seven part video elaborates how Shahid maintains his fitness levels despite being on a vegetarian diet. So if you are worried about your vegetarian diet and still dreaming to have six-pack abs, here’s your way out,” he adds. Shahid considers Salman Khan and Deepika Padukone to be the most fit male and female actor respectively in Bollywood. Nutrition: Besides, challenging and regular workouts, its important to be on an extremely calculated nutrition plan; Calculated to ensure the right combination of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Along with the right combination, timing of nutrition is extremely important. Ensuring you get the right breakfast, pre workout snack, post workout snack, and meals through the day. Supplements: It doesn’t seem obvious to most people,
but you definitely need some supplements to get that muscled, and have such low body fat content. Creatine is a very common supplement that most muscular guys take. Read all about creatine monohydrate. Besides creatine, Shahid kapoor happens to be a vegetarian, so he must take whey protein supplements, to ensure he gets enough protein in his diet. Shahid Kapoor 6 Pack Muscles, Workout, Diet Plan, Supplements In the movie Chance Pe Dance, Shahid Kapoor is more muscled than before. He’s gone beyond a six pack. He’s got an 8 pack- see the photo below! And everyone in the gym now wants that look like that. Know about diet plan, workout, and bodybuilding tips.. FIrst of all, let us say this. Getting an 8 pack or building a body like that is a great look to have, but takes a lot of dedication, sacrifice & control. Hats off to Shahid for his chiseled look! We’re fans :) If you want to know how to get that body, we’ll tell you how you can get it: Exercise: Seems obvious, but to achieve a chiseled body like Shahid, you need to be extremely regular at the gym. And each workout has to be a challenging workout. At Shahid Kapoor’s level of fitness, making a challenging workout is even tougher. Look Larger: Its a fact, that people look larger on TV than they are in real life. The camera adds about 1015 lbs of size. So, all the muscular actors on screen are actually smaller in real life! Short Term: This is a little known truth, but the kind of super physiques you see on screen, like those of Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham, and others, are created for the screen. Which means, their super muscular physiques are maintained only for a short time. Maintaining those highly chiseled physiques for a long period of time is not just difficult, but downright unrealistic in you plan to have a real life. So, don’t beat yourself down if you don’t get a body like Shahid Kapoor. But make sure you exercise, eat healthy and stay fit!
Neetu vishwakarma Discription : Actor
How Akshay Kumar stays fit without going to the gym! Akshay Kumar is a brand of his own. He does not belong to any Bollywood camp, he does not stick to tried-and-tested formulas of success, he is unconventional and we love his ruggedness and willingness to try different things. This confidence oozes out when it comes to his fitness as well. Putting the conventional, gym routine aside, he does what is natural and manages to flaunt a perfectly chiselled physique that neither looks artificial nor unhealthy. We love this fact about Akki and if you are wondering how he manages to do so, we have the answers for you.
How Akshay stays fit
Akshay does not have any specific fitness trainers, he is his own master who does what his heart desires. On occasions he steps into a gym but does not stick to a particular set routine. On an everyday basis, he believes in staying fit the natural way. He’d rather climb a 50-storey building twice than do reps with dumbbells. The actor is a fan of any sort of outdoor workout such as Parkour, freestyle workout, functional training, rock climbing, basket ball, and the likes. According to him, fitness needs to be utilitarian not about having a bulky body with biceps, triceps and 6 packs. It’s more important to eat right and exercise each and every muscle . Akshay Kumar owes his unique outlook towards fitness to martial arts, particularly Karate (he has a 6th degree black belt in Kuyukai Gojuryu Karate). He has also delved in other martial arts like Muay Thai, a Thai kickboxing technique. In fact, he loves martial arts so much he wants it included in the school curricula and considers it along with yoga to be the most complete forms of exercise.
Akshay’s dos and don’ts
The actor claims that he wakes up at 4:30 am and goes to bed by 9 pm without fail. He avoids night shifts as far as possible. He does go to the gyms in the morning but says he has no set routine. Instead he just ‘fools’ around for an hour and a half doing whatever his heart desires. In his own words, ‘he does anything and everything that inspires him and pushes his limits.’ He also does not endorse 6-8-pack abs that most Bollywood actors flaunt these days. According to him, ‘It takes a long time to make abs. Tehelte tehelte nahi ban jaate abs (It is not a cakewalk to get such abs).’ All that is shown onscreen might not be real either. I don’t endorse these six-pack or eight-pack abs. I believe in the natural way of maintaining a good body.’ His latest method to strengthen his core is with the use of special beads he got from Singapore. They weigh about 2-3 kg and he uses them to condition his core. He also wears them around his neck and swings them around as part of the exercise. These wooden beads are effective in burning fat and toning the abdomen. Read how the actor got fit for films like: • Brothers • Baby • Boss
Food to be lean and mean
No exercise regime is complete without a proper diet and Akshay has one which is easy to follow. He sticks to normal home-cooked Indian food. He usually starts his day with a heavy breakfast which comprises eggs, parathas and a juice or milkshake. Lunch comprises adabba he brings from home usually regular daal-roti-chawal-sabzi.He’s a big fan of Gujrati cuisine and raids Paresh Rawal’s tiffin whenever they are shooting together. Dinner’s usually a light meal; soup, salad and chicken. What’s most important is the fact that he has a very light dinner which doesn’t have any carbs. Whenever he feels hungry in-between meals he snacks on dry fruits and actually stays away from tea and coffee. The actor’s diet is very interesting because dry fruits are not only the perfect fillers but help curb diseases like diabetes and heart disease and even aid digestion. The actor claims he does have to occasionally curb his sweet tooth and only has sweets on Sundays. In fact he lets himself go on Sundays and eats anything that comes his way. Chocolate cakes, gulab jamunand other Indian sweetmeats he has in moderation. On other days, he swears by his amla juice and follows a strict diet. What we can really learn from his exercise and diet regime is that it’s not about bulking up but eating right and living a healthy life. And looking at him at the age of 47 we can’t disagree how right he is.
Beauty Secrets of 5 Bollywood Divas
The Bollywood bombshells have it all - flawless skin, healthy hair but a regime that is strict. Here is your appointment with the best secrets right from those who rule the silver screen with their talent and beauty Kareena Kapoor The style icon with a rocking career has a simple lifestyle that lends her the glow. Kareena is a vegetarian and practices a lot of yoga. During the day, she wears no makeup at all and at night, she loves to play up her eyes with lots of kohl. While she uses a face wash to clean her skin off the dirt, she does not like using too many creams because of their chemical content. While a sunscreen is important, she does not believe in facials. Keeping up with a strict diet that includes eating a lot of green vegetables, whole grains but less carbs along with drinking 6-8 glasses of water is the secret to her ever-glowing skin.
Sonam Kapoor She has suffered the misery of being overweight, sagging skin and a hairy face. But, the motivation to get fit and fashionable has led her to change. Her beauty mantra is going to be seriously worth following. Sonam starts her day with sipping some warm water, which is followed by honey and limewater to flush out the toxins. Her fitness mantra involves cardiovascular exercises along with some weight training. To keep her body and skin hydrated, Sonam relies on coconut water, buttermilk or cucumber juice. While she steers away from heavy duty skin products, a sunscreen above SPF 30 is a must at all times. She always uses milk as an astringent, or gram flour (besan) and curd.
Deepika Padukone
Deepika has a natural glow that is hard to mimic. However, we can try to follow a few simple rules that she lives by. Removing all your makeup before sleeping is the most important thing to do. She believes in healthy eating and hates the idea of crash dieting. Skin care routine, which would include cleansing, toning and moisturising, is very crucial for her. She uses mild soaps and indulges in clean-up sessions often. For her everyday makeup- a moisturiser, lip balm and a neutral foundation is must. A luxuriating body massage with hot oil is her idea of ultimate relaxation.
Jacqueline Fernandez
Nargis Fakhri
While she is a new entrant in Bollywood, her 4 crore endorsement deal with a beauty brand says a lot about her already. The secret to her beauty is using natural products that are gentle and effective. Nargis swears by the basics of skin care routine- cleansing, toning and moisturising, even when she is traveling. For a radiant skin, she adds lemon to her drinking water. She thinks using a sun block is necessary no matter what conditions you are going out in. To keep her system free of toxins, she sips on plenty of coconut water. Going for hair colours is a strict no-no for this Rockstar actress. A deep conditioning hot coconut oil massage is an instant solution for soft and shiny hair.
She indulges in a perfect diet that includes muesli, lots of salad and green leafy vegetables, along with super foods like salmon, sushi and nuts. Eating a lot of fish is the secret behind her thick and lustrous hair. Jacqueline’s top beauty essentials are a good cleanser and a sunscreen lotion. She works out daily for an hour, alternating between power yoga, dancing or running. The Sri Lankan beauty experiments with home remedies, such as a curd and honey pack, to soothe the face. Jacquelin believes that applying ice cubes wrapped in a muslin cloth before applying makeup does her skin a lot of good. To take care of her hair and condition her tresses she relies on an egg white mask along with head massages.

When you put same amount of food in two plates of different sizes, the bigger one appears to be having lesser amount as compared to the smaller one. And, you end up putting more food in a large plate. So, eat in a smaller plate to lose a little bit weight without actually doing anything. And, if you are still not convinced, then hear it straight from the expert, as Dr. Brian Wansink explains this logic further:
3. Think about food
Have a dinner party to attend? And, you are thinking about what all food items would be there? If yes, then go ahead and keep thinking about it because this will lower down the quantity of appetite hormone, and you will consume fewer calories during the meal. “Looking forward to eating could have a positive effect on food intake control because it leads to feeling full sooner, and sustaining that feeling of full, so you don’t seek out high-calorie snacks,” says Dr. Manfred Hallschmid, department of medical psychology and behavioural neurobiology, University of Tübingen.
4. Do a little work in the house
No, we are not talking about any sort of workout in house. In fact, we are talking about doing some household work to burn more calories. Like instead of using a lawn service every time, you can garden and mow by yourself for 25 to 30 minutes every week and burn around 200 calories! You can even wash your car for half an hour every week to not only save money, but also to lose around 100 calories. So, do any household chore on your own, and see the difference.
5. Get acupuncture done
You can also consider getting acupuncture done to lose weight. According to a study published in Acupuncture in Medicine, targeting five points in the ears, which are related to appetite suppression and digestion, leads to weight loss. Also, this technique increases the metabolic rate, which further promotes the consumption of body fat and helps you reduce weight even without exercising. However, be sure to get acupuncture done by a renowned and well-trained acupuncturist only.

7 Benefits of Turmeric for a Flawless Skin Turmeric or ‘haldi’, is one of India’s most widely used spices. Not only it is used to add colour and taste to our food but also as a cosmetic. It has also become a part of our rituals. One of the most important ceremonies of Indian weddings is the ‘haldi’ ceremony where a paste made of turmeric is applied to the bride and the groom’s body as part of their marriage preparations. Turmeric has been used as beauty product over the centuries. Here are some properties of turmeric that you can use to cure seven common problems and get a flawless skin. Signs of Ageing Turmeric is an excellent exfoliating agent and can help you defeat the signs of ageing. Take besan(gram flour) and turmeric powder in equal proportions and prepare a paste by adding water. You may alternately prepare this paste in raw milk or even yoghurt. Apply it evenly on your body and leave it till it dries off. Wash it off with lukewarm water and scrub your face gently in circular motion.a
Wrinkles You can use turmeric in combination with other ingredients to manage your wrinkle woes. • Add raw milk and tomato juice to rice powder and turmeric powder. Apply the paste and let it stay until it dries. Lactic acid present in milk will help peel off the dead skin cells. • You can add turmeric powder in buttermilk and sugarcane juice. This will work the best for dark circles and wrinkles. • Turmeric-honey paste can be applied on the face and neck to help exfoliate skin and keep a check on pores.
Acne Not only does turmeric take care of the scars and inflammation but also reduce oil secretion by sebaceous glands. To prepare turmeric scrub, add a few drops of water and lemon juice to turmeric powder. Apply the paste on the acne affected area and leave it for about 15 minutes. Gently scrub it off your face with plain water. You can also use turmeric and sandalwood mixture as an acne face pack and wash it off in approximately 10 minutes. For acne scars, dab a mixture of turmeric and plain water and leave it on the marks for 15 minutes. To control oil secretion, prepare a paste of sandalwood powder and ground turmeric with orange juice. Leave the paste on your face for 10 minutes and rinse it with lukewarm water. Stretch marks Mixture of besan (gram flour) and turmeric in yoghurt/raw milk/water can help women lighten the stretch marks. Burns In case you accidently burn your skin you can turn to turmeric for quick relief owing to its antiseptic properties. Prepare a mixture of turmeric and aloe vera gel. Apply it on the burn and notice how it heals the wound in no time. Facial hair Chickpea flour (sattu) or gram flour added to kasturi turmeric can be used as a facial scrub to inhibit hair growth. Be sure to apply this paste for about a month to notice results. Home remedies usually show results over a period of time upon consistent use. Cracked heels. Apply a mixture of coconut oil/castor oil and turmeric powder on cracked heels preferably 15 minutes before you head to take a bath.
Face yoga expert Danielle Collins tells you why you need face yoga We do everything we can to keep our bodies in shape, our minds healthy. But we often neglect our face until those lines can no longer be neglected, and those wrinkles can no longer be concealed. And then, out of desperation to look younger, we consider expensive surgery procedures and cosmetics that promise to fade those lines away. But they aren’t the only solution to our face problems. There is face yoga to your rescue that can diminish these signs of ageing, learns Kriti Saraswat from a leading face yoga expert Danielle Collins. What causes ageing of the face? There are a variety of causes that can lead to ageing of the face like the weakening of the face muscles, lack of sleep and exercise, poor circulation, and external factors like the weather, stress, excessive usage of cosmetics, etc. How does face yoga help one tone their face? Just as our bodies need regular exercise to stay toned and firm, the 57 muscles in our face also need to be exercised. When we do so, they are lifted and firmed and the skin attached to the muscles is also lifted and tautened which reduces lines and wrinkles. The benefits of regularly doing face yoga are reduction of lines and wrinkles, improved skin tone, reduced headaches and eye strain, release of tension, an energetic appearance and a healthy glow on the face. Face yoga also gives a holistic feeling of well-being which can benefit the mind and body. What kind of methods do you incorporate in your face yoga? There are a number of facial exercises that I teach for toning the face. In addition to this, my face yoga methods include regular massaging to improve blood circulation, remove toxins, and reduce puffiness and dark circles. The massage tech-
niques also increase collagen and elastin that are natural plumping agents. The relaxation method helps reduce deep set of lines and wrinkles that are caused by stress and frequent squinting. Also, acupressure is used to increase circulation, boost energy, which reduces headaches and tension. The combination of these methods yields great results, giving a youthful appearance. How often should one exercise the face? I recommend the readers to do it for 20 minutes, six days a week. After following it regularly, you will start to see a reduction in lines and wrinkles and have a more lifted, toned and youthful appearance. Just like any other exercise, you need to do it regularly to see results. One session is great but doing it daily is when you start seeing a real difference in your face. In addition to face yoga, what else can we do to keep our face fit? Positive thinking, correct nutrition and visualisation are few tips that add to one’s well-being, thereby reducing stress and ageing of the face. One should also use a natural moisturiser, a good sunscreen and reduce alcohol and sugar in one’s diet. Can you please share a few, simple DIY exercises that can be done at home every day? 1. The ‘V’: To reduce lines and wrinkles around the eyes and to make the eyes more open and energised. Put both your middle fingers together between your eyebrows then apply pressure to the outer corners of your eyes with your index fingers. Look up and start to move the lower eyelids upwards, making a strong squint. Then relax and repeat six more times. To finish, squeeze your eyes shut for 10 seconds then relax. 2. Smile Smoother: To reduce lines around the mouth and to lift and firm the cheeks and jaw. Hide your teeth with your lips and make an ‘O’ shape with your mouth. Then, smile as wide as you can and keep hiding the teeth. Repeat six times. Next, hold the smile shape and place one index finger on the chin. Then start to move your jaw up and down as you tilt your head back. Relax and repeat twice. 3. The Giraffe: To tone and lift the neck area. Looking straight ahead, place your finger tips on the top of your neck and pull the skin down as you tilt your head back. Bring your head back down and repeat twice. Then, jut your lower lip out as far as possible, place your fingers on your collarbone and point your chin upwards, pulling the corners of your mouth down. Hold for four deep breaths. 4. The Owl: To get rid of forehead lines. Pull down your skin with the index fingers while trying to raise your eyebrows upwards and making the eyes wide. Hold for two seconds, relax and repeat three more times and finish by holding this position for 10 seconds. This helps strengthen the forehead muscles, thereby smoothing and tautening the skin attached to the muscles. With regular practice, this will reduce and diminish forehead lines and wrinkles.
Yoga For Hair Loss
One of the most worrying problems of people living in the Middle East is – hair loss. While one of the most obvious culprits seem to be the desalinated water (the hard tap water contains high levels of chlorine which weakens the hair and causes hair fall), the extreme heat and constant exposure to air conditioning does not help either. And a fast paced lifestyle and increasing stress levels tend to fuel the fire. But to our rescue, (apart from our favourite hair dressers), is yoga! Coupled with good nutrition and sufficient sleep, you can work your hair to a healthier mob. Start with a quick warm up, and 3 long deep breaths to center your energies.
Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukho Svanasana):
Lie down on your stomach, and place your palms on the mat, near your ears. Keep your toes pointed downwards so your heels face the sky. Now, exhale and pushing your palms firmly on the mat, lift your body so that your hips point to the sky, like an inverted ‘V’. Keeping your hands exactly where they are, now gently put your heels on the mat (if you can) so that you can feel a nice stretch on your hamstrings. This pose strengthens the arms, increases blood circulation to the head thereby stimulating the nerves of the scalp.
Forward Bend (Uttanasana):
Stand straight on your mat. Inhale and raise your hands above your head. Bend forward completely pushing your buttocks back till your palms touch the floor (or wherever they reach). If you are uncomfortable, you can slightly bend your knees. Stay in this pose for 5-8 breaths. Then gently inhale bringing your arms above your head, raising your upper body erect. Remember to rise up from the hips, without straining your muscles. And use a gentle flow at all times. Apart from getting the blood circulation rushing to your head, this pose stretches your hamstrings, and muscles of the abdomen.
Vajrasana
Kneel down on the mat. The top surface of your feet must touch the mat and your heels face upwards. Now gently place your buttocks on your heels. Now place both your palms on your knees, facing downwards. Close your eyes and relax in this pose for 5-10 breaths. This pose relaxes the mind and improves digestion, which is an integral part of your overall wellbeing. That is why this pose is a part of this routine. Pawan Mukhtawasan: Lie on your back, and place your palms on your knees. Exhale and pull your legs to your chest, using the strength of your thighs rather than your arms. When you inhale loosen your grip, and allow your legs to move completely away from your tummy. Do this for a few breaths at your own pace. Let your breath guide your movement. Hold this position for some time. Close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths in and out. This pose also aids better digestion, by relieving any gas built up in the stomach and abdomen. It is also a great pose for relaxing the back and the tense muscles of the neck and thighs.
(Shoulder Stand) Sarvangasana:
Lie down on your back with your legs extending outwards. Place your palms along your back and hips for support and slowly raise your legs either by first folding them at the knees or by lifting them straight, and then raise your body while pointing your toes to the ceiling. Your elbows should be touching the floor and your back should be supported by your hands. All your weight should be on your shoulders. Make sure you breathe slowly and lock your chin into your chest. Hold this pose for as long as you are comfortable. To return to the lying position, slowly lower your body. Do not fall back to the lying position. Note: Do not do this pose if you suffer from any neck or spinal injuries. If you do have high blood pressure, perform this exercise only under supervision. This pose is known for activating the thyroid glands and helps the head to get its supply of blood, which in turn helps hair growth. Since the proper function of the thyroid glands is required for the smooth functioning of the entire body (including the digestive, nervous and reproductive system, regulating metabolism and the working of the respiratory system and mitigating hair fall), this pose is a must for those suffering from hair fall due to hormonal imbalance. Apart from these asanas, incorporate a diet of hair-friendly foods like prunes (great source of iron!), eggs, (loaded with essential nutrients such as proteins, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc and Omega 6 fatty acids), carrots (rich in vitamin A), walnuts (provide Omega 6 fatty acids, zinc, B vitamins and iron), and always stay hydrated!
Say no to tanning this summer
Tanning is inevitable this summer even if you choose to cover up completely or plan to use a sunscreen. But a few simple home remedies like using cabbage leaves or exfoliating with almonds on the affected areas can help in skin lightening, says an expert. Aashmeen Munjaal, owner of the capital-based Star Salon n’ Spa, doles out tips to flaunt a tan-free and healthy skin this summer. Use Cabbage: These green leaves act as a miracle when it comes to sun tan. Place a few cold cabbage leaves on the affected areas. Keep them for 15 minutes. Repeat it twice a week for immediate effect. Apply Vicks: Take a small amount of Vicks on your fingers, apply it to the sunburn areas and massage gently. People with excessive sunburn use twice and others use once a week. Apply ice: If you have excess sun burns then this is really going to work. Take a few ice cubes, wrap them in a muslin (mulmul) cloth and apply gently to the tanned areas. In case of excessive sun burns apply ice directly to the affected areas. It offers you fresh and tan free skin. Use milk cream and saffron: Blend high quality edible milk cream with saffron, make a paste of it and apply it on your face gently and leave it overnight. Apply it thrice
a week. This home remedy not only gives a tan free skin, but also acne free and fairer skin. Apply curd: Add curd, use it on tanned surfaces for about 15 to 20 minutes. Wash off. Do regularly to get rid of tan completely. Apply bottle gourd juice: This helps in overcoming the worst tan cases. Apply the bottle gourd juice to the tanned areas 3 to 4 times a day and you will see the difference. Apply masoor dal paste: To make this wonderful skin rejuvenator, soak a whole tablespoon of masoor dal and make a rough paste of it. Add equal quantities of tomato paste and aloe extract, apply it on your face and affected areas and let it stay for half an hour before you wash it off with cold water. Exfoliate with almonds: Soak almonds in water for three to four hours, grind them well making a mild scrub and apply it to your tan affected areas. This not only helps you to get a tan free skin but also makes your skin healthier from within. Use buttermilk: Add three teaspoons of buttermilk to one teaspoon of oatmeal, mix it well and now give its lick to your face by massaging in circular motion. This will not only help you to get tan free skin but also results in younger and blister free skin.
The fact that I can be friends with my ex-boyfriend shocks people Narayani Shastri The talented actress, who has made a mark in Indian daily soaps and Marathi cinema talks about her movie Runh, playing a eunuch and her life’s fundas Narayani Shastri is not someone you can have a casual conversation, or so I thought. But after talking to her for about ten minutes I realised that she is an open book. You can ask her the most controversial question and she will answer you without batting an eyelid. Narayani’s recent release had the actress playing a eunuch, something no actress has ever done in her career. How did you convince yourself to play a eunuch in Runh? The director had approached several other A-list actors before coming to me for it. I believe I was destined to do the film. There was nothing to think about it was a challenge to get into the skin of the character, because this was the first time a woman was playing a eunuch. The fact they thought I could do it, was a compliment for me. Besides putting on weight was there any other drastic changes you made for the movie? I observed them, their mannerisms and how they spoke to portray myself better as a eunuch. I faced a lot of criticisms because I had put on a lot of weight at that time, but I couldn’t reveal the real reason behind it. I didn’t have to do much. When I take on a character, I am no longer Narayani. We began hearing about the film in 2013, why the delay in release? Frankly, I wouldn’t be the right person to answer that question. I guess they were waiting for the right distribution channel to do this film. I think they were also planning to push the movie in the festivals, may that’s why,
but I am not sure which festivals. How did your family and friends react to Runh? They loved every bit. It’s a real story and the movie is quiet real and gripping and heartfelt. Was this movie shown to the eunuch community as well? Yes, since it was a real life story, there was a special screening for them. They were very proud of the project and the way it had turned out. Didn’t commercial movies ever appeal to you? Frankly, I am not the running around the tree singing songs kind. But maybe someday I’d like to experience that too. They are often ill-treated and people are vary of them. Did your perception about them change or alter during the making of this film? I had eradicated my fear of them much before this movie ever came to me. In fact it was during my college days. I had befriended a eunuch and we’d often talk. Unfortunately, she’s no more now. From being the ideal bahu to vamp to eunuch to a don – is there anything you now have on your wishlist? I’ve never had a wish list. I only hoped to do projects that excite me and push me to do better. And frankly, playing a eunuch doesn’t seem something like a subject on anyone’s wish list. Long back I had heard that you like and prefer to do your own make up. Why? I would love to be treated by a professional make-up artist if my character is such. But for regular looks, I am very comfortable doing my own make up. I know my skin and texture better than anyone else. One thing you will never do on screen? Nothing
One thing you will always lie about? I never lie; never felt the need for it One scandalous thing you’ve done in your life that can make headlines. I think the fact that I can be friends with my exboyfriend is something that shocks a lot of people. He is one of my best friends and people somehow can’t digest that. One role you regret doing I have no regrets in life. Reality shows to you are? A lot of fun. I have done every possible reality show.
Ashutosh Gowarikar called me to this dream city V.M. Badola Veteran actor VM Badola who will play Dada ji in Star Plus’ popular show Nisha Aur Uske Cousins talks about his role and the show: Tell us about the show & your character. Nisha Aur Uske Cousins is a story of seven cousins living in a joint family in Jaipur. All the children are talented in their own way. The characters in the show are very real. I play Dadaji (grandfather) who is very strict. The story largely emphasises on the unique bond of love, sacrifice and friendship that the cousins share. Their only fear is about Dada ji who is conventional and rigid in his thoughts. The show has portrayed the generation gap. Is it true in real life as well? It’s hard to comment. I believe there are a few concerns for the new generation but the gap is not exactly how I envision it. There are stereotypes and old-fashioned takes on issues but it’s better to move with the times. How conservative are you in real life? Nobody is conservative when it comes to real life. Par buddha disco toh nahi jaa sakta naa (but the old man can’t got to disco)! It’s not being conservative, it’s about changing. Do you look up to somebody in the industry? I have spent 60 years doing theatre. I’m my own role model. You learn from your experiences and performances. Your son Varun Badola has directed a few episodes of the show. How was your experience working with him? Varun is a very talented actor and I am sure he is doing well as a director as well. Till now, I have not had the opportunity to work with him. He has directed a few episodes but hasn’t directed me yet. You have a huge chunk of your time in Delhi. How different is Mumbai? Yes, a very large chunk of my life was spent in Delhi.
Ashutosh Gowarikar called me to Mumbai for Swades. That was the time when I came to this dream city and gradually became a part of it. I have acted in serials before but they were Delhi-based. Delhi is doing very well in terms of theatre, where my heart lies. I think a lot is happening there. Mumbai is more of a TV and film city. How was your experience working with the fresh and young people? It was a very pleasant experience. Our younger generation is talented. I would call them fast learners and smart workers. How different is the industry today? A lot. Everything is so much faster. Be it the narration or the filming style, the industry has taken a giant leap towards progress with the help of new technologies. Also, we have a lot of fresh talent today.
Being a part of a great show comes with lot of responsibility’ Ssharad Malhotra The talented actor Ssharad Malhotra who essays the role of the great warrior of Mewar namely Maharana Pratap in the popular historical show Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap on Sony Entertainment Television, has been much appreciated for his acting skills in the show. On the same we got in a conversation with the actor to know more about his character and being a part of the historical show. On being a part of the show, Ssharad shares, ““Being a part of an historical show which is larger than life, gives me a great feeling. I also think that being a part of such a great show comes with lots of responsibility as the audience expects a lot from the actor in terms of performance. In short there is an added responsibility to give the best performance in each shot.” Furthermore he elaborates on wearing heavy costumes that give him a perfect warrior look, “I take almost 45 minutes to get into the look of the great warrior Maharana Pratap. Though the costumes are heavy and at times you find difficulty in shooting in such costumes, at the end when you receive appreciation for your good performance it overtakes all your stress.” The actor also had to go through some physical training, “I had to learn sword fighting and horse riding for the show. A special trainer was kept who taught me sword fighting and horse riding as it is very important for a ruler to take this physical training to get into the character.” Preparing for the role came with challenges says Ssharad, “Preparing for a historical character comes with challenges. The role is physically exerting. We do horse-riding, sword fighting, martial arts and then the heavy costumes. But what matters in the end is when people appreciate your work.” Very rightly said Ssharad, when people appreciate your performance it overcomes all your stress!!
Why did you choose ‘Yudh’ as your debut show? The first reason I wanted to do the show was because of Mr. Bachchan. Looking at his body of work you are assured that whatever he does will be of quality. He was one of the main reasons why I did the show. I was looking forward to working with him and I am glad this show came my way. Even the other cast in the show is brilliant. Also, the show is being shot like a film and not in a TV format so it was a great experience. Can you say something about your role in the show ‘Yudh’? I play the role of Gauri, Yudh’s first wife. I am a strong independent woman, an honest civil servant. She is a simple woman who just wants a great family and happiness while Yudhisthir wants to achieve greatness in his profession.
‘Yudh’ will open many doors for people to attempt something unique: Sarika
Will your role be able to establish its mark among the audiences? Portrayal of women on screen is changing but it is not as much as I would like to see it. Strong and honest portrayals of women need to be increased. One should stop looking at women for relationship purpose (on screen); she is a person and can do lot of things. How was the experience of working with the megastar Amitabh Bachchan? It is always a pleasure to work with a talented actor and a great human being like him. We have worked together earlier and it has been a wonderful experience. He is energetic and is always longing to work and do something different. I respect him (Amitabh Bachchan) for the kind of work he has done till now. It is just not the number of years that he is around, but the memorable work that he has done. Do you think ‘Yudh’ will create any change in the television genre? The scenario of television is changing. The tried and tested format of shows will continue to exist but there are other different and out of the box shows also coming up. I think after ‘Yudh’, lot of new doors will be opened up and people will attempt something like this. The biggest blockbuster on television YUDH starts July 14, Monday to Thursday at 10.30pm only on Sony Entertainment Television.
