COVER STORY

Priyanka Chopra: Important for me to play strong female roles After stealing the show with her empathic portrayal of Kashibai in ‘Bajirao Mastani’, Priyanka Chopra is back as a tough cop in ‘Jai Gangaajal’ and the actress says she is consciously opting for roles in Bollywood that represent the modern Indian woman. She has established herself as one of the best performers of her generation of actresses in Hindi cinema besides a blossoming career in Hollywood that saw her becoming the first female star from India to front a US television show in ‘Quantico’. She is now all set to make her Hollywood film debut as the main villain opposite Dwayne Johnson in ‘Baywatch’. Priyanka says she is consciously gravitating towards roles that have more to offer notwithstanding the length of the part. “It was very important for me to play strong female characters in my films. I started doing that a long time ago, be it ‘Kaminey’ where I had just eight scenes, Jhilmil in ‘Barfi!’, ‘Gunday’, ‘Saat Khoon Maaf ’ or Kashibai in ‘Bajirao Mastani’. “I try really hard to play strong women, who are a representation of modern Indian woman,” Priyanka told PTI in an interview over phone from Montreal, Canada. Her next big screen outing ‘Jai Gangaajal’, directed by

Prakash Jha, will see her playing a female cop fighting for justice in a corrupt, male-dominated place. “It’s a very interestingly layered character. Abha is very feminine and she has been thrown into this man’s world where nobody takes her seriously even when she is Superintendent of Police, because she is a woman. “She has been sent to this very male-dominated city where she has to put her foot down, making sure that she does not have to take the law in her hands at the same time.” The film’s fate will be clear only after its release on March 4 but the actress, 33, is hopeful that people will like the movie, which deals with issues like corruption in the system, feminism and farmers’ suicide. Priyanka is seen mouthing some intense dialogues in impeccable Hindi, something she did not find hard to do. “I grew up in UP and I was born in Bihar so my Hindi is good. My mother knows both Hindi and Urdu. We speak the language at home. I was very happy that I got a chance to speak such good Hindi because usually we speak Hinglish in our films. “My character Abha comes from Lucknow. There is a softness in her language but her diction is very clear. It is my job as an actor pull off all kind of roles.” She has interesting company in her co-star as Jha, besides directing, makes his full-fledged acting debut as a cop with dubious morality in the film. Priyanka says she had a gala time bullying the director as he is her junior when it comes to acting. “He was bullied throughout the film a lot because it was his first movie (as an actor) but he took it in his stride. It was a lot of fun to have your director as your co-star. He has done a phenomenal job. I don’t think anyone could have done a justice to the role.” Priyanka has become an assured performer and she credits her directors for instilling that confidence in her. “The credit for my acting goes to all the filmmakers who gave me such varied roles, they were my film school. “Also, I never take my work for granted. I take every character seriously and try and give my best whether it is small or big.”

Here’s what 7 top designers want to see Priyanka Chopra wear to the Oscars The Oscars have given the world some of the most staggering style moments. With Priyanka Chopra being announced as a presenter at the upcoming Academy Awards, we are waiting with bated breath to see what she steps out in. And since we know she has a crazy schedule, we decided to help her choose the perfect Oscar dress, courtesy some spectacular designs by India’s top couturiers. 8

Farah Sanjana A lightweight gorgeous bejeweled tulle gown is what I feel will look fabulous on her at the Oscars. The inspiration for this dress comes from the new sensibility of today’s woman who has learnt to look after her personal security without

Raghavendra Rathore A dark coloured slim bandhgala jacket in Banarasi handloom silk with light embroidery paired with a plum Duchess satin skirt. A perfect ode to the weavers in Banaras while keeping an indigenous Indian look on a global stage. That would be my pick for her.

Rick Roy I am sure the world wants to see her in Indian wear, but I think she should wear a gown that shows off her stunning body. She would look lovely in a white gown with panels of white frosted Swarovski crystal sheets. I have given the panels at the exact curve points to accentuate her curvaceous body and a major train that should drag behind elegantly.

Swapnil Shinde Priyanka is a trendsetter in every sense of the word, and a short dress, entirely encrusted with Swarovskis, will definitely be something that everyone will remember. A layered organza gown in lavender can also be perfect for her debut on the Oscar stage, as it has the right amount of drama and volume!

Neeta Lulla The mark of an Indian actor like Priyanka Chopra going global on a platform like Oscars is a proud moment for our country. To represent the true essence of modern India, hypothetically her attire should be the saree. In the pastel tones, the oyster or champagne colour and in vibrant tones, a crimson red would work best with her personality. The saree adorned in its classical form draped snugly over the body would give her the same sensuality as that of a firm fitted gown. A sweetheart neck backless blouse embellished with Swarovski crystals would add to the elegance of the saree. Vintage jewellery, preferably chand balis or emeralds set in diamonds, would work as perfect accessory.

I don’t think Priyanka should feel the pressure to wear anything traditional. She’s representing us as an Indian and that is more than enough. She does wear Indian silhouettes really well though, and seeing her sport a modern day take on the saree, maybe with an intricate kind of embroidery or work or a sexy blouse, would be a delight.

Kunal Rawal Priyanka’s style is very summery and sexy. She knows she has an incredible figure and loves to show it off, she also has an impeccable sense of dress that makes her the epitome of femininity. From shiny golds to subtle naked dresses, from LBD to bold colours, from fitted to drapy, and from sexy to boxy, she can carry it all. And since she never fails to experiment with her looks at national or foreign events, I would give her a blend of Indian drapes and western cuts and the overall look will have a contemporary print, texture and pattern.

INTERVIEWS

Aditya Roy Kapur on playing an obsessive lover in Fitoor: I don’t know if I can love like that!

The danger with under-playing a character is that one is labelled a non-actor. Let’s face it, the acting in our films is a little over-the-top. There is nothing odd about it. I mean, too niche a film… Actually, when I read it on paper, it didn’t seem like a niche film. The way people are processing it now, it might appear to be so, but it seemed like a very relatable kind of story that people could connect with. It was very Indian in the sense the main protagonist is someone who is not from an upper class or anything. He is a Hindi speaking boy from the Dal lake experiencing love.It had the whole rich girl and poor boy dynamics, so you’d think that would be able to cut across all demographics. Even how Tabu’s character is, the way she speaks… it’s not elitist, it’s not alienating. It’s not about a thing about rich people’s problems so it seemed to me that if you can emotionally touch a chord with the script, it could cut across all sections. So yeah, it didn’t seem to be like a niche film.

The director Abhishek Kapoor is known to make niche films… Fitoor is his most commercial outing, I think because it’s a love story. I think love stories are inherently commercial and universally kind of loved. Did you watch the films or read the novel before you began to shoot? How did you prepare for the role? I didn’t read the novel. It’s not because I’m lazy, that’s Katrina’s theory (laughs). I didn’t read it because it was adapted as a screenplay and very different from the book. They were two very different things. I had seen the Ethan Hawke film Great Expectations quite a while ago and I didn’t really like it. It didn’t really fulfill me emotionally, it left me a little cold. It is a very tricky film anyway, it’s not an easy film to make but visually that film really stuck with me. The reason I didn’t read the novel was because I didn’t want to confuse myself like say he has adapted it so there was something in the script that was not in the novel. Yeah, I’ll be playing something else.

What was the most difficult part of preparing for Fitoor? There were quite a bunch of things.Like physically like I had to work hard because after Daawat-e-Ishq, I had to lose a lot of weight. That was pretty intense, like in 10-11 months, I lost 17 kilos. It was very psychotic. It was like an obsession or a madness. I wouldn’t have one even one sugar free in my coffee. But that kind of centered me and this character needed to be subdued. I speak fast, I am a born-in-Bombay guy. For Noor, I had to be a little more centered, quiet and reticent. Also the way he speaks, his body language.. I spent some time in Kashmir, I went for a recceand stayed back. I spent some time with the locals just to kind of get some ideas, their mannerisms, lingo, to get little clues.

Do you think this generation can relate to something like that? Aren’t they all about moving on? It is not a generation thing, I feel. Humans like to feel loved back, if they don’t they are won’t pursue it endlessly. Maybe more, I guess, you move on faster, probably so. But kids are growing up very fast nowadays that’s for sure. Was this part of obsessive lover part of Noor completely unrelatable to you? I can only pursue someone up to a point. I have never gone through a situation where I have tried to woo someone who was not showing mutual interest. No, but I don’t think that’s my thing. I don’t know if I can love like that. I never had to go through it. Lucky me, touchwood. I think it is relevant because love is something that is through all the ages you love and I think we are all alike. But in films, we need to show things that are heightened versions of reality. You want to see someone that is larger than life. You want to see stories and lives that you don’t see every day. So, you have to show the audience a love so great… because they are also coming to see it and want to be convinced. What was the best part of playing Noor for you?

What else? I did some art classes because I had to look convincing in that whole thing and welding, that was fun. That was a few months, a couple of months. It all didn’t come into the film as you know stuff gets edited out… I did some stuff like melting metal, like fun stuff. It’s perks of the job to be able to learn new stuff. That apart, I had to get myself emotionally charged up for this role. Because it’s like this guy loves a girl from the time he is a kid and continues loving her even though it’s not reciprocated. That’s something I have not been through, thankfully so I had to get that right. Because your love not being reciprocated, is not really nice.

I think it was the mental thing of trying to just wrap my head around how he is. Because you know you have to rationalise. How has he lived all these years and still he is painting her and it’s all about Firdaus and how he is able to live like that, just to understand that. I don’t know if it’s come across or not but emoting that was challenging. This is the one film — I might be boring and all — but I was waking up before time everyday just to get on the sets because the world he was creating for me was so novel. The story was interesting and the journey of the character goes and being able to look at situations through this character was exciting.

And to imagine how it would be for a small-town boy to come and just experience this, was thrilling. I was feeling so excited to get to play this part that every day was like a dream for me. Is there something in Noor that you identify with? I think that he is passionate and I find that I am passionate about a few things. If I am in a relationship, I’m kind of invested about my work. I find that acting is something I love doing from the last few years. I try to get it right and yeah, I am passionate about cricket and singing. Were you happy with the way you played your character? If you could go back and change something what would it be? Every film of mine, when I watch it, there is something I wish I had done differently. I cringe a lot while watching my films. But I do pat myself on the back sometimes, and it is important to do that, too. And more important to later, let it go. But I know there are some things for sure. What it was in Fitoor, I don’t want to let out. That’s not right because I’d rather people find it. What’s this about you being the best kisser? Well whatever it is, I think it’s great. I have to thank Gattu for that. (Laughs) And no, we haven’t kissed. You have done three romantic films backto-back. Is that deliberate? Yes, the three solo-hero films that I have done have been romantic films, but it’s not deliberate. I would like to explore different genres as well, though within the lover- boy zone, all three have been very different roles. I’d love to do an action film. I grew up watching them, so I’d love to do them. I’d love to do comedy.

What’s your favourite genre to watch? When I was growing up it was Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan stuff, but now I like watching a good drama. It depends on the mood. Sometimes, you want to watch an action film, or a good solid drama. Or if you have had a heavy week, a no-brainer light film… What about horror? I love horror. I don’t think we have cracked it over here, because being scared is such a universal feeling that horror can strike a chord anywhere, if you are doing it well. Somehow we look down upon the genre. Yes, we don’t see any of the big actors and directors venturing into that space. True, we don’t even make many murder mysteries, you know? How romantic you are on a scale of one to ten? I would say five.

5 life lessons from Deepika Padukone’s dad’s letter that will INSPIRE No wonder Deepika Padukone has achieved so much in life. She, despite being one of the most sought after actresses in the industry, makes sure to keep herself grounded no matter where she goes. Her humility is what inspires us and the proof lies right there in her thanksgiving speech that she gave at Filmfare Awards last night. Having won the ‘Best Actress’ title for her incredible performance in Piku, DP read out an emotional letter given by her dad Prakash Padukone, and it was enough to make our hearts heavy. You could connect with every single line mentioned in that letter right from the self-motivation to pursue your dreams to how family will always remain as ones’constant strength. Trust me, I’m still not over those few minutes when Deepika read out the letter. Here check out 5 life lessons from the letter, which you probably can use it in your individual lives….

Never complain, strive harder Recalling his career path, Deepika’s dad said, “Looking back I realize that the most important thing about my childhood and adolescent years was my refusal to complain about a lot in life. I was thankful for the few hours of the week we had the opportunity to hit the shuttle back and forth. In fact, the foundation on which I based my career and my life was the refusal to whine about everything. And that is what I want to tell you my children that there is no substitute for perseverance, hard work, determination and passion for what you do. If you love what you do, nothing else matters, neither awards, nor compensation, not even the gratification of seeing your face in newspapers and television.”

Always try and chase your dreams On valuing Deepika’s dreams, he added, “Deepika, at 18 (loud applause) when you told us that you wanted to shift to Mumbai for a career in modeling, we felt you were too young and too inexperienced to be alone in a big city and in an industry we knew nothing about. In the end we decided to let you follow your heart and thought it was cruel to not give our child to give an opportunity to go after a dream that she lived and breathed for. “If you

succeeded, it would have made us proud. But even if you didn’t, you would not have any regrets that you didn’t try.”

Be independent but not at the cost of your identity …and he goes on, “Remember how I constantly tell you both about the importance of making you way up in the world without waiting for your parents to pull strings. I believe it is best for children to work hard, to make their dreams come true and to not have things handed to them on a platter. When you are visiting home Deepika, you make your own bed, clean the table after meals and sleep on the floor when there are guests at home. If you occasionally wonder why we refuse to treat you like a star it’s because you are our daughter first and a film star later.”

Work regardless of how much you get paid “You are in an industry where there is a lot of money. But I believe that it is important to be able to be the best in whatever you do regardless of the money. The things that really matter in life are relationships, honesty, respect for your parents and elders. Material success is important but not fundamental to happiness and peace of mind.

Believe in God I can’t tell you enough about the rejuvenating power of prayers and a little faith. Spare a few minutes of your day to close your eyes and meditate, to think about God, and you will see how much faith in his power you will strength in you. In the end, when your career is behind you, what remains is family, the friends that you have made. Live a life that is healthy and one that will allow you to live with your own conscience.”

Karan Johar: Bollywood not a spin-off of Hollywood

The 43-year-old “Student of the Year,” director said he feels proud that Indian actors and actresses are able to make a mark in Hollywood. “I do not think, they (Hollywood stars) could do very much in our cinema. I am proud that there are more eyeballs to Indian actors and actress in Hollywood. This makes me feel proud of their achievements,” Johar said in response to a question on the success of Priyanka Chopra in the American film industry. The filmmaker was scheduled to deliver key note address on “The # (Hashtag) Democracy” at the annual Indian Conference 2016 of the Harvard University. He instead opted to address Indian students at a jam-packed auditorium at the Harvard Kennedy School on the Indian film industry. “India is one of the leading film making nations of the world. It is the only kind of film industry of the world that has never needed any kind of Hollywood money or from the outside. We are self-sufficient. We have a great domestic film economy. We stand tall. “They (Hollywood) came to India. All of them, Fox, Disney and when they came to India. I met them and told them things work differently in Bollywood. We are a proud film making nation,” he said. The producer-director said, “Bollywood sell dreams like no one does,” but agreed that the Indian film industry does not acknowledge the writers. “The most important thing to do in the film fraternity is to empower our writers. We do not empower our writers. We have the technology; we do not have the writing talent, because we do not empower our writers. “We need to pay them much more. We need to give them that sense of power, entitlement. It becomes all about movie star in our country and that is not the right way forward.” Calling the hierarchy of Bollywood inaccurate, Johar said writer and director should come before the popular movie stars. “If we want our cinema to progress, we have to empower the writer, then the director and then the movie star in that order. We do it all wrong. Our food chain is all wrong. And that’s why our films suffer. When our focus becomes the movie star, our attempts fails. We need to go beyond that and push behind the tropes.” Replying to a query on why Bollywood movies are dominated by Hindu characters and have very less of Muslim leads, the filmmaker said his upcoming film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” has a Muslim female lead. “I am going to reveal something to you today about my next film ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ the name of the hero is Aayan he is Hindu in the film and she is Alizeh. She is Muslim in the film and there is no conflict in the love story.”

Nivedita Basu: It’s only the senior actors who are willing to wait for good roles

Nivedita Basu, the producer of Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai and owner of BCL team Kolkata Babumoshayees gets candid with BollywoodLife on her debut as a producer and team owner. The feisty lady has been associated with some of the legendary shows of Indian Television. In a lengthy chat, she talks about her new venture in Box Cricket League, her new show Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai and industry trends Considered as the right hand man of TV’s czarina, Ekta Kapoor, Nivedita Basu is one of the forces behind the successful ‘K’ shows and many other programmes. She turned into an independent producer in 2015 forming her firm, The House of Originals and is an owner of a cricket team in Box Cricket League, Kolkata Babumoshayees. Excerpts from an interview: Where you always interested in cricket? Not really…my parents were huge cricket fans. Cricket was the only sport I never played. I was the sports captain of my school and played all the racquet games. What got me hooked to BCL was the fact that even the girls were playing. The idea of women taking to the field got me interested.

This year BCL is a lot bigger. What was the idea? The whole idea was conceptualized at my place (smiles). Last year, it was on a smaller scale with friends playing with each other. However, we made it a property by getting support from a number of actors and members of the media. This year, we have teams Your team Kolkata Babumoshayees is going to Dubai. Do you feel properties like BCL help in building a brand for Indian Television abroad? The main sponsor of BCL is also a sponsor for Masters Cricket League team Libra Legends. There is a lot of traction on the digital media or social media for BCL. When we take it abroad to a platform like MCL, it conveys that BCL is about cricket but it is also a lot of fun. The following of TV actors on social media is far higher than that of film actors. When a channel buys a property like BCL, it plays across a number of platforms. People love to see an onscreen bahu play against her onscreen devar. You are producing a show, Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai and also managing a cricket team. How do you balance it out?

I managed eight shows simultaneously at Balaji. I am also playing cricket with my team in the BCL. When I stepped into a producer’s shoes, I made sure I had a great team backing me – people I have worked with before. Their efforts are commendable. Likewise, in cricket I have people to look after varied aspects. The hallmark of a good leader is the capacity to delegate. Inshallah, I will be able to handle four to five properties soon. For someone who has worked with long-running soaps why did you choose a finite series for your debut? If you notice then stability is slowly vanishing from all channels. In past six months, we have seen varied shows coming on same time slots in different channels. There is little stability for a producer. The audience has become very fickle. A finite show is like a film. I worked as a creative director on 24 and found the idea of telling a story for a fixed time a very interesting one. All of us watch American shows. The idea of making a show that will air for five days for six months is a safer one. Plus, channels are now open to experiments. You know you need an actor only for six months. There is more quality control in terms of acting, production and writing. Was Amrita Rao your first choice for the role? We were thinking about quite a few actors. When we met Amrita Rao we found that she looked as sweet as she did in her Vivaah days. Moreover, she was missing from action since a while. Our first meeting was brilliant. Vikas (Vikas Gupta), I and others bounced off the idea. All of us were on the same page about casting her. Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai has the music industry as its backdrop. Why did you choose that field? I am a musician myself. I had been handling the music for all shows of Balaji. Vikas and I had been dabbling with this idea for a really long time. Now, we are independent and I am freelancing for Balaji. He revived the idea and we felt the timing was right. He is also deeply into music. What do the new BARC Ratings mean for producers? There is a clear trend with the GECs going to the interiors. So, we will see infinite daily soaps for that audience. However, with digital media gaining prominence, every channel will look at few slots for an

urban crowd. It is a very exciting time for content makers. In GECs, the format is more traditional. Yes, Ekta’s Naagin rocked as the concept appeals to the urban and rural audience. It was her father’s film and she wanted to make it for the longest time. She hit the right buttons with the show. Do you feel producers feel restricted while creating content due to the ratings system? In GECs, people do look at the interior audience. Our show, Itna Karo Na Pyaar got a rating of 1.2 on Sony TV, which was great for its time slot and channel. I would love to do another show like that. However, it’s the Yeh Hai Mohabbatein or Sasural Simar Ka that rules the interior region. Yes, in a GEC space, a channel gets revenue only from shows that perform well so there is pressure on producers to deliver. However, with digital media coming in, we will see shorter formats as well. What does it take to succeed in this field? I think it is about timing. We need to have an edge over others. I can’t say that hard work and dedication will reap rewards as there are a number of people doing that at the same place. You need that extra acumen. Do you feel that TV actors don’t get roles as per their talent? See, the exposure of TV stars has gone up tremendously. They are on twitter, facebook and Insta. They also earn from shows and appearances. Yes, quality wise we have gone down. I would love to replicate some of the old shows. We must realize that the audience base has seen a shift from 2002 to 2015. Earlier, we had the classes watching TV, now shows talk about girls who don’t have money to eat. I see it’s the older actors who are willing to wait for good roles. Younger ones are ready to jump the bandwagon for the perks this industry offers. Also, they can’t afford to wait as there are 100s vying for the same role. Once a show is successful, people want to duplicate it. So, original roles are rare.

Has social media made life easier for creatives in TV? It might be working for those who deal with youth shows but otherwise it is not of much help. There are times when I have taken audience reaction but that has not helped. Digital is great for youth shows but such feedback is inconsequential for shows on GECs. Makers do a lot od research but it is hard to pinpoint what works. It creates a lot of pressure, social media. What kind of shows do you watch? I saw Bloodline on Netflix recently. I love Narcos. Ekta and I have been lapping up American TV since years – that’s where we get a lot of ideas from. As a kid, I loved Mahabharat and later shows like Campus and Banegi Apni Baat. In this line, you have to read a lot or watch a lot of soaps.

What does it take to become a professional in this industry? When you come here, have an open mind free of prejudices. There is no concept of time. You have to be happy that you got a chance as lakhs want to be in your position. You should not look down upon what you are creating whether it’s a saas bahu show or whatever. Girls are more responsible and adapt easily. You need to be receptive to accept ideas from wherever as anything can click.

Sonam Kapoor: Great to see people value healthy lifestyle Sonam Kapoor, who follows a strict fitness regime, says it is great to see that people of all age groups are now focusing on their health. “I think it is great that health and fitness is top of mind for everyone across age groups, be it the young or old. People now understand the value of maintaining a healthier lifestyle by exercising and eating right,” Sonam said in a statement. The 30-year-old actress was in the capital for the fourth edition of Max Bupa Walk for Health event. Sonam, who has had an amazing weight loss journey herself, said walking is the best exercise to shed a few kilos. “What a lot of people don’t know is that losing weight or getting fitter doesn’t necessarily require a lot of investment and struggle. You cannot miss this EXCLUSIVE interview of Sonam Kapoor where she’s got really candid about films, actresses and more. Read on… Sonam Kapoor is not your usual Bollywood diva. She is spunky, feisty, and a pure joy to be around and that’s exactly what translated when I met her recently. Posing all pretty, Sonam looked quite calm and composed as she discussed about her upcoming release, Neerja. Now usually you are very apprehensive when you have a film releasing around the corner. But surprisingly, this chick was not a tad nervous about the audience response or anything for that matter. Instead, she gave honest opinions about the box office trends, her biggest fear and why Neerja will touch more hearts than criticisms. Let me break it down to you one by one… On her transition from family entertainers to a biopic So she started by discussing the challenges that she faced during this huge transition from doing rom-coms, family entertainers to doing a completely performance oriented film like Neerja. She said, “Well, its’ a biopic but films like Khoobsurat, Raanjhana or Prem Ratan also require the same effort. You need to learn your lines and act. They are just different genres. So I think every film comes with a different set of challenges. And every film requires a performance. I have tried my best with every film and Neerja as well.” On reports of Neerja being banned in Pakistan “Neerja has not been banned in Pakistan as of yet and I really don’t think there should be any objections towards Neerja because the film hasn’t come out. Moreover, we have made Neerja extremely honestly, have tried to stick to the true story as close to it as possible. Everybody is involved. We have made it as honest and as amazing as we can so that we respect the wishes of her family.”

On revealing her lucky charm “I am believer in God. I read Hanuman Chalisa as a ritual but it has nothing to do with luck and all. I believe in destiny. I believe in God’s grace. I pray everyday and I think I am blessed by life. I have a rudraksh where I say Om Namah Shivaay. I am a Shiv Bhakt. I truly believe in God and respect every religion. Honestly I don’t have any ‘lucky charms’. I think you create your own luck and you work hard or work honestly and you believe in the grace of God, then good things happen to good people On her Biggest Fear growing up as a child You’ll be surprised but she confessed, “I cannot sleep alone. I am afraid of the dark. I have an overactive imagination. So I always used to believe that there’s this monster going to come and get me.(laughs) You know how children are?” Ask her how has it changed now and she quips, “It’s the same. That will never change. I still can’t sleep alone. I have to keep that one light on..” On actresses’ biggest fear in the industry “I think of being inconsequential. Of being somebody who is just loved for her beauty; I think as an actor I was loved only for my beauty but eventually beauty fades. But talent never goes away. I believe I have earned every line on my face. Age has given me wisdom and I love ageing. So for me that’s not a fear but my fear is becoming somebody who is afraid of growing up.”

Sunny Deol: I might make Ghayal 3 Sunny Deol says he would not be a part of a film where he is just thrown in The Ghayal Once Again actor reveals why he took 26 years to make a sequel to the superhit film and more…Read on… Sunny Deol hit the screens last week with Ghayal Once Again. The film didn’t just open to rather good collections over the weekend, but also managed to garner decent reviews. Apart from the film’s content, it is Deol’s inherent niceness, I think, that reached out to critics and cinegoers alike. Sunny, who also directed the film, stayed true to his script. He did away with songs, hired one of the best crews in the world for the action and released the film himself despite the big financial strain. Here, he talks about the journey of Ghayal 2 and the road ahead…

the pitch. As long as I am involved in it, it’s a good film for me and if I am not involved in it, then obviously all these flaws get noticed. Sometimes, one feels like no matter what you make, the audiences don’t understand it and they want to see movies like the show Bigg Boss. I don’t understand that. True, you can never gauge what the audience wants as their taste keeps changing.

The initial response to Ghayal Once Again has been encouraging. Are you happy or did you expect better?

No, the audience as such has changed. But now the audience who go to the theatres go because of the perception around the film. Films of many actors who are stars, get great openings, not because they are doing some good work. It is because of the fan following they have created because of the ‘good boy, bad boy’ image they have created, which somehow seems to be working wonders for them. Nobody talks about whether they liked the film or not, they only talk about collections. So it was a big battle for me to make this film the way I wanted to. But it has been a great beginning for me right now. I believe that I am launching myself all over again. The sequel came 26 years later. Why wait so long?

Well, obviously one aims for the sky. I mean it’s nice because I have got good reviews. At times, I really do not know what a critic’s viewpoint is. I think like the audience. Because when I watch a film — I am not talking about my film — say a Hollywood film, I like to get involved in it. I am not trying to see whether the shot was right, whether the story-telling was on

I wanted to, I really wanted to, but it just didn’t happen. I always had it in my mind that when I made the sequel, it should have the earnesty and honesty. I was not just trying to make a film for the sake of it. So maybe now, after this sequel, I might make a Ghayal 3 also. There are billions of reasons because of which it has not been possible to make it sooner. One of the

biggest reasons was that I have mostly always worked with new directors and filmmakers and unfortunately, now, new filmmakers cannot survive the battle of the PR, publicity, and perception. So I am stuck with a couple of producers. I am hoping now that I have started to direct more films myself, take it further around because all I have to do is, be consistent. So when I do a couple of films, people will realise that I am doing a certain kind of cinema. When they see it once or twice, then this will go on the digital format, and onto satellite, so obviously the people who have not been coming to the cinema, will get to know…

Omji’s character, the doctor give him a reason and then he starts working. So I couldn’t have seen the character any other way. That’s what I have always tried to do. Also, your punchlines and one-liners that are so popular were missing in this film. You treated the character with more casualness. If you have seen my good films, I have shouted in them, it’s not because shouting is required or it’s purposely being done. It is the output of the character. When the audience connects with the character, you have got it right. It’s very difficult to make everybody fall in love with a character as everybody sees it from a different point of view. In all the films I have done over the years, they were character-driven, stories and characters that they related to. But now all they remember is if I am shouting in some scene. That’s all they talk about. They will not talk about the vulnerability of the characters. That bothers you?

Do you only want to do action films? No, not really. It’s not that I just want to do action films. I basically like to do films which are very emotive. There is some character to it, somewhat a feel to it, like I am, like my Mohalla Assi…. It has been stuck. I think it will release now. They are working on it right now, so hopefully, in March. This film needs a release and it’s from a great novel and we have made a good film. When I started shooting this film, I didn’t know if I would be able to portray the character to the expected level, but I always love challenges, so I jumped into it. This time around, Ajay Mehra and Sunny Deol both were quite subdued. Was this a conscious decision? No, it was not a conscious decision. I just thought the way the character was written, he has lost everything in life and he wants to kill himself. He doesn’t want to exist because there is no purpose. So then there is

The dialogue has to be spoken in that intensity. The outburst happens… it’s not that I am trying to do it deliberately. I get involved in the scene…. Obviously, there have been certain films where I also started playing up to it, those were bad. Those were really very bad. So we will see you more in front of the camera or behind it now? Yes, definitely. I want to do more direction in future. I really want to as an actor, too I will be seen more. I am already working on it. I definitely want to do Ghayal 3 now. I have 100 per cent decided that you’ll will see me this year, in at least two more films. Your contemporary Anil Kapoor was part of Dil Dhadakne Do. Do you see yourself in a role like that? I wouldn’t do characters where I didn’t have much to do. I wouldn’t enjoy it. I don’t want to be part of a film where I am just thrown in. I like to be very definite about whatever I do. That’s why I did Damini. I just did that character because he did his bit and then went away. He is not taking away from the hero, he just does his thing and leaves. I prefer doing such roles and I have to enjoy it on the floor, not that ke chalo karlo iske saath, aisa karlo… woh mujhe karna baada mushkil hota hai.

be true to that. I have never compromised and I am not going to do that now. This is also the first time you worked with a completely foreign crew for the action. How did that happen? I have worked with foreign crews. Betaab onwards, we have had lot of foreign crews in our actions. I have worked a lot with them, initially. After that bulana band kar diya because the action directors here didn’t seem to like it. But for this film, I realised that action has gone way beyond what we do and we needed to match those standards. Earlier also, I used to be very involved, in the action part of my films, but when I was directing it, I couldn’t so I needed someone else to do it. I have seen Bourn Ultimatum series and I had liked that guy’s work. I was fortunate that he was ready to do it You are an introvert. This is the first time you stepped into the public domain for film promotions. Was it difficult, considering this is not something you really enjoy?

When you conceived this sequel, there was a lot of talk that you would approach Raj Kumar Santoshi to helm it once again. What happened to that? Well Raj and I had spoken initially and he was not so keen on doing a sequel. Then after that obviously we were not working and then we hardly had any discussions about it. So I started looking at other directors but it was not coming up to that standard. So I decided to do it myself. In Ghayal Once Again, you’ve done away with songs (except one). Was that a difficult decision to make, considering music contributes to a certain fixed revenue for a film? No, it was not a difficult decision at all. I always like to have a flow of the script. If the song is going to disturb that flow, I would rather not have it, unless and until the genre of the film is like that. I really didn’t want to add songs because I couldn’t see Ajay Mehra singing. If a character had no reason to, why would he sing? So, he can’t have songs. There is no situation for a song, the way the screenplay was going, I had to

Starting was difficult, but then I got into it with the mindset that I am going to love it and enjoy it and it was easy. I was not going to be scared about facing the media. I had decided let them ask me anything and I would answer. Everyone says, ‘Be very diplomatic’, but I started off by saying what I was feeling. That’s what I have been doing and somehow that has been connecting with people a lot. One has also heard about the serious financial strain that the film put on you personally. Since you were playing a triple role (actor, producer and director), how did you handle it? Tell me, in which business, is there no financial strain? It’s everywhere. Any business you take on and that’s part of your profession, whatever field you are in. It is just that one paper brought it out in a bad taste. I don’t know why they do such things. Khud ka accounts dekhenge, unko pata chalega unke bank mein hazaron crores ke karze padhe hue hain. Anyway…

Tusshar Kapoor: We will come back with another Kyaa Kool Hain Hum film! Post release we caught up with the star and he spoke about the film’s performances, his issues with the CBFC and much more... Tusshar Kapoor is on a high with two films, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Mastizaade, releasing last month. But the actor didn’t promote the latter and isn’t apologetic about it either.Post the release of the film, we caught up with the star and this is what he had to say about both the film’s performances at the box office, his issues with the Central Board of Film Certification, films to look out for in 2016, Priyanka Chopra and more. Two film of yours, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Mastizaade, released last month. How happy are you with the response to both the film? Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 has done decent business considering that it faced opposition from Airlift. Our film had been butchered by the CBFC too, but it still still has held its own audience and we guess, KKHH3 will make Rs 30 plus crores. We have made the film at a low budget, so at the worst it will at least recover the money. Do you think KKHH3 lost out on money because Mastizaade released only a week later? No, I don’t think we lost out because of that. We lost out because people went to see the movie expecting some sexual innuendos, but they were very far and few in between because they have been removed by the CBFC. We had to make some voluntary cuts and re-submit several times, that process took away all the masala. We didn’t have any opposition from any other film except Airlift which took away a lot of our multiplex office through the week and it kept growing. It also had a strong word of mouth, so we faced stiff competition from them. The audience also felt li’l underwhelmed because this was like a normal comedy rather than a Kyaa Kool kind of a film. All the jokes and spoofs were incomplete coz of the cuts made, so the audience found the jokes very choppy and abrupt, that is what happened. People felt cheated when they saw the film. The film was decently film made, but when you don’t have the adult humour, why will the audience appreciate it. Airlift also took over, it’s a great film, and I guess that’s what happened. However, I have no regrets as we could not have done anything about it. This is a system and we had to go by it.

What about Mastizaade? I’ve had a huge problem with Mastizaade and I don’t want to speak about it. I have not promoted the film too, so I am not responsible for the outcome. Would you like to dwelve into the details of the problem? I’ve never had a problem with any producer in my life, so the problem is not driven by me and hence I don’t want to talk about it. Any plans of another Kyaa Kool Hai Hum film? We will obviously come back with another Kyaa Kool Hain Hum film in a couple of years. The franchise is still in people’s mind, so they will always come back to watch it and I hope the next one lives up to the expectations. But with the ongoing CBFC issue, would you like to be a part of a sex comedy again? Right now, no way! Till censorship becomes certification only, I will not do a sex comedy again. Talking about CBFC again, if you have heard then Aligarh‘s trailer got an A certificate when they tried to release the promo, but a film like Ishq Junoon which has an nearly pornographic song has been left out. Would you like to comment? I don’t know about this, but they have reasons for everything. I wouldn’t like to comment on that, but Aligarh seems like a great movie and I would love to see it. What are your plans for your production house? Right now, it is at a very initial stage. I am already working on something. But till it’s signed, I cannot even talk about it. With production, things change every time. Nothing has been locked, so no point talking about it. Looking back at the start of 2016, what do you expect the year to be?

It will be a very exciting year I guess. I am hearing some very interesting scripts, so I hope that there are some interesting films that I can come out with. I am also looking forward to some very interesting films that the fraternity brings out. Which films are you looking out for in 2016? I saw Joy and Room recently and I am looking forward to watch The Revenant and Spotlight. Talking about Bollywood films, I am looking forward to watch Dangal, Sultan, Fan, Azhar and Udta Punjab. Oscars are coming up in a few days and Priyanka will be presenting an award. How does it feel seeing a Bollywood actress go to America, win so many awards and even present an Oscar? Priyanka Chopra is definitely an inspiration. She’s changed the rules of the game and she has made things possible for an actress, which were never possible earlier. An actress in her thirties is limited, but Priyanka has broken the rules, changed the rules and broken the barriers. She is not just an inspiration to women, but also to guys. She has proved that nothing is impossible and you have to keep fighting. She has stuck it out from good times, bad times and come out with flying colours. She hasn’t had things on the platter from the beginning, she has worked her way to this position where she is currently. She deserves an applause.

Javed Akhtar: Direction, productiona no more maledominated

The 71-year-old celebrated writer is positive about women succeeding in various departments of cinema and leaving their male counterparts behind. “Earlier women were restricted to playback singing, acting and hair-make up but today there is no vocation in cinema where we don’t have women,” Akhtar today said at Urdu festival, “Jashn-e-Rekhta”. “No one thought women would direct films. Today there are so many successful movies being directed by women. No one is surprised by it anymore. Production is no more a men’s club, it is looked after by women. There are so many great women script writers. I respect them,” he added. Akhtar noted the only section left for women to show their dominance is music composition but he is hopeful that it will also “change soon.”

Noted lyricist-poet Javed Aakhtar says filmmaking is no more a male-dominated profession as many women are making their mark in direction and production. Speaking at a session, “Zindagi, Aashiqui aur Shayari”, the National Award-winning screenwriter said the reason India has lesser female writers than men is because earlier, the fairer sex was not given enough opportunities to succeed. “Women have written very less, not because they don’t have talent but because they were not allowed. So, why is it that no great painter was a woman. It is because she was not allowed. That’s the reality. Even today, we have miles to go.”

How Akshay Kumar stays fit without going to the gym! This fitness freak does not follow the conventional rules to stay in shape. Akshay Kumar is a brand of his own. He does not belong to any Bollywood camp, he does not stick to triedand-tested formulas of success, he is unconventional and we love his ruggedness and willingness to try different things. This confidence oozes out when it comes to his fitness as well. Putting the conventional, gym routine aside, he does what is natural and manages to flaunt a perfectly chiselled physique that neither looks artificial nor unhealthy. We love this fact about Akki and if you are wondering how he manages to do so, we have the answers for you. Akshay does not have any specific fitness trainers, he is his own master who does what his heart desires. On occasions he steps into a gym but does not stick to a particular set routine. On an everyday basis, he believes in staying fit the natural way. He’d rather climb a 50-storey building twice than do reps with dumbbells. The actor is a fan of any sort of outdoor workout such as Parkour, freestyle workout, functional training, rock climbing, basket ball, and the likes. According to him, fitness needs to be utilitarian not about having a bulky body with biceps, triceps and 6 packs. It’s more important to eat right and exercise each and every muscle . Akshay Kumar owes his unique outlook towards fitness to martial arts, particularly Karate (he has a 6th degree black belt in Kuyukai Gojuryu Karate). He has also delved in other martial arts like Muay Thai, a Thai kickboxing technique. In fact, he loves martial arts so much he wants it included in the school curricula and considers it along with yoga to be the most complete forms of exercise. Akshay’s dos and don’ts

The actor claims that he wakes up at 4:30 am and goes to bed by 9 pm without fail. He avoids night shifts as far as possible. He does go to the gyms in the morning but says he has no set routine. Instead he just ‘fools’ around for an hour and a half doing whatever his heart desires. In his own words, ‘he does anything and everything that inspires him and pushes his limits.’ He also does not endorse 6-8-pack abs that most Bollywood actors flaunt these days. According to him, ‘ It takes a long time to make abs. Tehelte tehelte nahi ban jaate abs (It is not a cakewalk to get such abs).’ All that is shown onscreen might not be real either. I don’t endorse these six-pack or eight-pack abs. Whenever he feels hungry in-between meals he snacks on dry fruits and actually stays away from tea and coffee. The actor’s diet is very interesting because dry fruits are not only the perfect fillers but help curb diseases like diabetes and heart disease and even aid digestion. The actor claims he does have to occasionally curb his sweet tooth and only has sweets on Sundays. In fact he lets himself go on Sundays and eats anything that comes his way. Chocolate cakes, gulab jamun and other Indian sweetmeats he has in moderation. On other days, he swears by his amla juice and follows a strict diet. What we can really learn from his exercise and diet regime is that it’s not about bulking up but eating right and living a healthy life. And looking at him at the age of 47 we can’t disagree how right he is.

9 Natural Teeth Whitening Methods The benefits of having great looking teeth are plentiful, there’s no question about that. Good, white teeth can help boost your self esteem, make a positive first impression and also increase your overall image. Yet, an estimated 18 percent of all people attempt to conceal their teeth. While the reasons vary, commonly this is because of stained, yellow teeth that just won’t whiten no matter how much brushing is done. Nobody should have to conceal their teeth for this reason. And while there are plenty of cosmetic procedures that can help make teeth look whiter, you can also take measures into your own hands at home. Here’s a look at 9 easy, natural ways to whiten your teeth: 1. Mashed Strawberries This is a teeth-whitening method made popular by A-list actress Catherine Zeta Jones. Specifically, she mashes up four or five strawberries and then rubs the mixture all across her teeth. The acid content of the fruit is said to eat away at food and drink stains. Following this method, however, it is important to rinse well.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Brushing with Apple Cider Vinegar is another proven teeth-whitening method, although those who administer it say that it takes about a month of regular brushing with the substance to notice a real difference. Specifically, this method shines in terms of removing the likes of coffee and nicotine stains from the teeth. One thing to note is that it is an acid, so following the administering of Apple Cider Vinegar, you should either brush thoroughly with a standard toothpaste or wash your mouth out well. If acid is left to dwell inside the mouth, it could end up eating away at the tooth enamel.

3. Coconut Oil Pulling Although one of the newer discoveries in natural teeth-whitening, many are praising the results from coconut oil pulling. The best way to use this as a teeth whitener is to place a spoonful in your mouth and swish it around like mouthwash, add drops of it to your toothbrush and brush your teeth with it or dab it with a wash cloth and apply it to the teeth that way.

4. Eat Cheese Eating cheese can also help promote a healthy smile. That’s because cheese contains the milk protein casein, which works to make enamel stronger. Essentially, by eating cheese, you’re helping to keep your tooth enamel healthy.

5. Eat Your Veggies Yes, simply eating crunchy vegetables, such as celery and carrots (as well as fruits like apples and pears) can help keep your teeth whiter. How? It’s because these veggies are abrasive and can help remove stains from the surface of the teeth. They also help produce saliva, which also helps to minimize staining.

6. Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide As far as natural teeth whitening goes, this is a proven, effective method. Just mix minimal amounts of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide into a paste and use it to brush your teeth. The hydrogen peroxide kills germs and keeps the mouth clean, while the baking soda works to scrub any staining off of the teeth.

7. Change Your Toothbrush Every 3 Months Most people only change their toothbrush out when they get a new one from their dentist at their six-month cleaning. This is a mistake – toothbrushes should be swapped out at least once every three months. Why? Because this is normally about the time that bristles bend and wear down. Once that happens, your teeth aren’t being cleaned like they should.

8. Brush, Brush, Brush

Although this might be a tad inconvenient, one of the best ways to ensure that your teeth stay white is to brush them after every meal. Drinks like coffee, tea and red wine can stain the teeth, and foods that are high in sugar can also do damage to their appearance, however regular brushing can help offset some of these issues.

9. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is commonly used to absorb toxins that have been ingested by the body – but it also works to remove toxins from the mouth and get rid of stains. So while this method may sound a little strange, and while it will surely turn your mouth black until you rinse, brushing with activated charcoal provides highly satisfying results.

1. Moisturize The Eye Area After Removing Makeup Removing all makeup before you retire to bed is recommended for your skin’s health. When applying makeup, the eyes are never left out especially with the invention of mascara and eye shadow. Hence, when removing makeup at your eye area, you will tend to cause that area to be prone to dryness due to makeup removers. Dry skin is very vulnerable to wrinkles, hence moisturizing is the key thing in overcoming eye wrinkles. Immediately after removing makeup, moisturize your entire face, paying more attention to your eye area and wrinkles around your face.

Many people still smoke cigarettes despite knowing that it is harmful to their health. It not only affects the lungs and decolorize the teeth, but also cause the formation of wrinkles. Smoking narrows the blood vessels preventing the flow of adequate nutrients to the skin, and since skin cells depend on nutrients for nourishment, the skin becomes wrinkled. According to lifestyle news, smoking is the major cause of wrinkles among smokers. The eye area is very prone to having wrinkles and therefore calls for proper care. Quitting smoking should be your first step forward in your efforts to erase wrinkles from your face. It allows time for the skin to regain back its collagen instead of continuous destruction.

2. Quit Smoking

3. Use Sunscreen Wrinkles are often caused by ultraviolet rays that destroy collagen and hence the elasticity of the skin. Shielding against UV rays is the best way to prevent further destruction of collagen. Use of safe sunscreens is the best way to shield the skin against UV rays. It can be obtained over the counter in several beauty shops cheaply. Apply the sunscreen on the under eye avoiding spilling it into the eye. As summer approaches, don’t forget to shop for sunscreens and never forget to apply them before you go out to bask in the sun!

4. Laser Treatment This is a more expensive way of treating wrinkles around the eye that is expensive. It is where laser light is used to trigger the formation of collagen, the substance responsible for the elasticity of our skin. This process is painless but has some negative effects that you ought to be aware of. Therefore before considering it, speak to your doctor about any side effects or risks. This treatment usually require regular sessions for it to be effective. There are various types of laser treatment which include Fraxel, fractional CO2, and many others.

5. Get Enough Sleep Sleeping has healing powers to most of the body ailments. Sleeping prevents wrinkles by promoting relaxation which in turn allows recovery of collagen that may have been destroyed. Having enough sleep also prevents eye puffiness and formation of wrinkles by reducing the strain on the eyes. There are however products too that can be used to reduce puffiness and wrinkles. The best products for puffy eyes are those that have anti-inflammatory properties. Contact a dermatologist if you have sensitive skin before trying any products you want to apply on around your eye area.

Conclusion Everyone wants to look young, but that can never be achieved with wrinkled skin. The above ways are some ways that can assist you towards achieving your desire to look and feel young for a better-looking, more confident you. Wrinkle formation is usually due to our failures to pay attention to proper skin care. Therefore, let us take responsibility and prevent the occurrence of wrinkles first, rather than treating it when it has appeared. If we have to treat, let it be those wrinkles that are as a result of aging.

TELEVISION Here’s why Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi’s Shakti Arora and Radhika Madan WON’T team up again soon! This might be one helluva disappointing news for their die-hard fans but there is logic behind it! Well, all good things have to come to an end. Sadly, in the case of Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi, the finale is a little abrupt. Tonight, we will see the last episode of the much-loved soap that told the story of loyalty, love and friendship. It was also one of the most romantic shows of recent times. Fans will miss the little nokjhoks, Ranveer’s (Shakti Arora) efficiency in draping sarees, passionate embraces, eye locks and unspoken communication that made the lead pair’s chemistry a truly scorching one. In an EXCLUSIVE conversation, the lead pair opens up. How would you describe MATSH in your life? shakti: Everyone looks for a turning point in life. I had done shows previously thinking they would change my fortunes, which never happened. MATSH gave me everything I craved for – name, fame, money, recognition and fan following. By God’s grace, it happened to me when social media was at its peak. If it happened four years ago, I would not have got that kind of exposure. MATSH came at the right time. For years, I would fight with God about the kind of work I got, I would say if I get that show I will make it a hit

and do everything possible, but those chances never came. I got all my answer with MATSH – success comes when it is destined to. Radhika: The show has changed me as a person. I was a stone-heartened girl, in the sense I had no emotional quotient. I never cried for the 19 years of my life. My mom used to wonder whether I had any emotions or not. MATSH has made me so soft and sensitive. It has changed my dreams and aspirations. I have got everything from this show. I am very thankful to everyone. Did the news of the show going off air make you teary-eyed? Shakti: I did not cry per se but yeah, whenever I thought about it, my eyes would well up. When I signed up for it, I vowed that I would do anything to make it a hit – Mai apni jaan dal dunga. When you value something, uski shiddat karte ho, it means a lot. I am obviously emotional now. I don’t want it to go off air. But audience has lost hope that they will get to see the Ranveer – Ishaani’s romance that was the base of the show. The other tracks were not so happening as per their opinion. RV and Ishaani have got back but it is a little too late.

Radhika: I did not believe it, at first. Of course, people were calling me and asking about it, but I told them that I got no call from the channel or production house. After I got the news, I was extremely disheartened. I feel hollow from inside. The show was our baby – Shakti and mine, we took care of it. I don’t know how to react.

creek was quite a horrifying experience. I was wearing no cable or harness on an extremely windy day. I had zero confidence in myself but my director was confident that I did pull it off. It came off very well and the TRPs soared. Lastly, it will be the scene on tonight’s episode, where RV and Ishaani finally confess their love and reunite.

Which are your favourite scenes from the show?

Radhika: Well, there were many who said I could not act for nuts. And that I was just good-looking. I remember after the gunshot scene, I was supposed to cry. I wept and there was pin drop silence on the sets. No one said anything. Then, my director walked upto me, hugged me and said, ‘I am proud of you, beta.’ That was the moment!

meri-Aashiqui Shakti: There are a few scenes I love. One of the first one is when I cry like a baby in the bathroom after Ishaani’s marriage is fixed elsewhere. I had to depict how heartbroken I was. It was hugely appreciated by audiences, critics, top directors and people from the production house. The scene, where I got shot for the first time was also quite special. The show was at its peak then and all of us were extremely enthusiastic about everything. It was an emotional scene and both of us cried our hearts out. My suicide scene where I stood on the railing of a bridge – 100 feet above a

How has MATSH changed your perception about life, love and relationships? Shakti: Ideas about love keep on changing whenever you meet a new person in your life. That’s because your equation keeps evolving. If I speak about Ranveer and MATSH, I feel IshVeer have a magical

almost divine chemistry. They sparkle whenever they come together. The emotions and tears come naturally. I have romanced in my earlier shows but Ranveer and Ishaani’s tuning was sheer magic. Radhika: I ran away from the shoot one day. I was a pampered spoilt child who knew she would get away with anything. I used to sleep daily for 14-16 hours. Here, I was shooting non-stop for 24 hours, 48 hours and what not. Then, people told me that I could not run away. I used to go home and cry wondering what I was doing with my life. All that frustration vanished when I saw my first scene on TV. I felt it was totally worth it when I held my first award. The show has made me a stronger person. I know good acting is important. When people tell me that they have shed tears with me, I felt it is a worthwhile journey.

Tell us about your relationship with Radhika Madan, you co-star… Shakti: We were great friends on the sets. Radhika and I are bulls…Taureans. We have huge egos but that was only there for each other (laughs uproariously). We used to fight and makeup. Off sets, we never partied together. We did not prefer to party

as we have different set of friends. However, at work we’re the best of buddies. Woh mujhe bahut acche se janti aur samajhti hai. Radhika knows my mood swings, which are frequent. I also understood hers. Radhika would be irritated and cranky on some days, when she would shout at technicians – aur sabka class leti thi. I knew how to calm her down. We handled each other’s moods perfectly. I will miss the unsaid chemistry between us, which is rocking. Radhika: Well, I did not know the A of acting. I remember, at the start, we used to take 10-15-20 retakes for a shot and I thought it was normal. Everyone was so patient with me. In a shift of 12 hours, we complete only a shot or a shot and a half. I would wonder why everyone’s so slow. Then I realized that

I can’t act and because of me, everything moves at a snail’s pace. Shakti played a huge role initially. He would come to my room and make me rehearse my dialogues. He knew my lines and his by heart. He worked really hard on me. There is a divine connection between Ranveer and Ishaani – whenever we came together for the emotional scenes, they were perfect.

Considering people love your jodi, do we see you two teaming up once again? Shakti: I don’t think we should pair up immediately. The audience needs a break. However, we could come back when people really start missing us maybe after a couple of years or a year and a half. It should be with a fresh story, new look and novel concept. I will, of course, say yes to working with her. I know what bond we share! Radhika: I would love to do another show with him. Our bond is simply amazing.

TRAVEL Dera Dune in Rajasthan, built on a 100 ft sand dune, is one of several resorts offering winter dune safaris

Adventure sports in Rajasthan Who said you had to fly to Dubai to enjoy a dune safari? If winter spells outdoor adventure for you, hitch a ride for one, closer home. From dune safaris, zip-lining to spotting Demoiselle cranes Rajasthan has a lot to offer

What to do

The desert around the Jamba village is home to nomadic tribes with a rich and vibrant lifestyle. You can take a 2.5 hourlong desert safari in the dunes and halt at their homes. The village, was the birthplace of the founding saint of the Bishnoi tribe, Jambeshwar or Jambaji. The Bishnois are known as eco-warriors and conservationists of the region. For them, the preservation of animal life and vegetation has been the priority from the early 15th century. The second stop of the safari is to visit the homes of the Raika tribe, known as the traditional veterinarians of the desert. They specialise in taking care of camels. The final stop allows you to visit the hutments of the carpet weavers. These visits help get an insight into their lives and maybe, even pick up a skill or two. You can also visit the village school or choose to take a camel safari to visit the salt pans, not too far away.

Bishnoi women carrying water home

The desert also has its fair share of wildlife where you can see antelopes, Demoiselle cranes, peacocks and birds of prey. The Kheechan village nearby offers a unique insight into human-animal relationship. Nearly 10,000 to 12,000 Demoiselle cranes congregate every morning who are fed grains by the villagers The dunes also offer a perfect setting to light the bonfire and enjoy traditional Rajasthani music. If you are an early riser, check with the retreat staff for the exact time of sunrise and opt for the camel safari in the morning. It can get pretty cold during winters. Carry warm clothes, walking shoes that help wade through the sand, hats and sunglasses. Keeping in mind the isolation of the location, the retreat needs adequate advance notice for any special dietary requirements. You can enjoy the local culture and the activities but its is best to avoid giving money or presents to the local tribal people as it spoils the equation.

Also try The zip-lining at Jodhpur. This exciting 1.5 hours activity allows you to glide over the majestic Mehrangarh fort and offers stunning views of the blue city, an aerial experience of two desert lakes and the Rao Jodha Eco Park.

Donning exquisite gowns with shimmering jewels and tailored suits, these mega stars turn heads wherever they go; celebrities are constantly immersed in the spotlight as their fans try to get their hands on juicy details about their wealth, love life, and even their health.

Of course celebs are not as perfect as the media makes them out to be, and they suffer from much of the same health problems that afflict so many of us face; from heart and skin conditions to diabetes and epilepsy, Celebs often have to come clean about their health despite their best attempts to hide their illnesses from the paparazzi and their fans. No one wants a group of cameras photographing the worst moments of their lives, especially not when it comes to being ill, but keeping a secret when you’re famous is near impossible. But which celebrities have been able to overcome severe illnesses and become beacons of success? There are quite a few more than you might imagine, but we have selected 16 big celebrities that are battling severe illnesses and who are true inspirations of both strength and courage; they face the realities of their illnesses on a daily basis, and despite the symptoms and side effects they put forth their greatest effort.

1. Michael Phelps Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time: with a total of 22 medals to his name, Phelps has set just about every record in the sport of swimming. Not only does Phelps have the most gold medals (18 have been earned so far), but he has also earned the most medals in a single Olympic Game, with a total of eight medals won in Beijing during the 2008 games. Four years after the Beijing games concluded, Phelps would go on to secure four more gold medals at the 2012 games in London. Phelps is one of the 10 million Americans who are currently struggling with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD; he was diagnosed at a young age and, like so many others, was told that it would often lead to more severe symptoms in his adulthood if left untreated. Some of the worst symptoms of ADHD include an inability to concentrate, and an immense amount of social anxiety: needless to say, Phelps has been able to overcome his ADHD to become one of the greatest athletes in Olympics history.

2. Tony Braxton Tony Braxton is a classic American songwriter that took the charts by storm in the mid 90s and gained hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide with songs like “Un-Break My Heart,” “You Mean The World To Me,” and “Another Sad Love Song.” Braxton’s family has suffered from Lupus for quite a long time: her uncle died from the disease, her bother is a carrier, and in 2010 she announced to the media that she suffered from the disease as well; Lupus affects 1.5 million people in the United States although nearly 90% of carriers are expected to live a normal lifespan.

Only two years after announcing her ongoing battle with Lupus, Tony was struck with a series of complications resulting from her disease, and as a result she was hospitalized in Los Angeles while filming for her reality series, “Braxton Family Values.” Braxton has said that her Lupus is not supposed to be life threatening, but that it has been a major thorn in her side when it comes to her career. So take note, Dr. Gregory House, Tony Braxton is living proof that sometimes it is Lupus.

3. Miley Cyrus Miley Cyrus might sound like a birth name to you, but her actual name is Destiny Hope Cyrus, which surprisingly sounds more like a stage name than Miley. Cyrus is the daughter of the early 90s country music star, Billy Ray Cyrus, and was introduced to the world of celebrityism as the star of the Disney Channel show, Hannah Montana. Ever since she left the Disney Channel, Miley launched a successful solo pop singing career with hits like “Wrecking Ball,” “Party in The USA,” and “We Can’t Stop.” It’s currently estimated that in the United States alone, 2.7 million people suffer from a heart condition known as Atrial Fibrillation, which creates a very rapid heart rate (even when an individual is completely at rest); with such a high number of reported cases it’s not surprising to find that there are a number of celebrities suffer from the condition. Also known as a form of Tachycardia, Atrial Fibrillation is rather common and, as Miley has reassured her fans, isn’t life threatening.

4. Alec Baldwin Alec Baldwin is the actor we all fell in love with from movies and shows like “Beetlejuice,” “30 Rock,” and “The Departed,” and for the past 33 years he has absolutely nailed his performance in 115 different roles. While watching Baldwin on set you would never suspect that he suffers from arthritis, but the American actor has a chronic form of Lyme disease that resurfaces the same time each year and renders him nearly immobile; while Lyme disease is perfectly treatable, chronic forms of the illness can be rather stubborn, and are nearly impossible to cure completely. Alec’s condition often leaves him without any energy, and despite his frequent medical visits it seems like his Lyme disease is something he’ll just have to manage to the best of his ability; Lyme disease is traditionally contracted through the bite of a tick, but the source of Baldwin’s disease has yet to be identified! Baldwin has been known to seek out the attention of his fellow cast, but he probably isn’t enjoying his time in this “Lyme-light.”

5. Jon Hamm Jon Hamm is 44 years old now and a big star, but he was a fairly unknown actor until 2007 when he was cast as the leading role of Don Draper in the hit AMC show “Mad Men.” “Mad Men” became a huge success for AMC and netted Hamm a Golden Globe Award, which has made him a consistent pick in future roles.

Hamm has gone on to perform in larger films, with appearances in “The Town,” “Bridesmaids,” and “Million Dollar Arm;” in reflection of his great success, he has also been nominated for a total of 11 Emmy awards. Jon has a rare skin condition known as Vitiligo which is currently believed to affect less than one percent of the world’s population; the disease kills some of the skin pigmentation cells in the body, which causes parts of the skin to appear out of place and splotchy. There is no known cure for Vitiligo, but it is not a life threatening illness. Interestingly enough, Hamm has been able to conceal his Vitiligo throughout his career by dressing with his disease in mind.

6. Kim Kardashian Kim Kardashian is known for a variety of reasons, but one of the most prevalent reasons is undoubtedly her dashing good looks. Kim has often been the most highly paid television personality in recent years, making upwards of $128,000 a week for her on screen appearances; she has transitioned this media popularity into a line of successful skin products to give her fans a chance to replicate her glowing exterior, but there may in fact be one small caveat in her beauty plan: her skin may not be as pristine as we once thought!

In 2011 a physician confirmed that Kim Kardashian was actually being afflicted by an autoimmune disease called psoriasis which shows itself via patches of itchy and scaly skin. Psoriasis currently has no cure, but it needs to be constantly treated and maintained or else the condition can become gradually worse and cover the majority of someone’s body. Kim has commented that her disease has certainly had an impact on her life of beauty, but that it ultimately won’t impede her from continuing to build her career as a T.V. and fashion icon.

7. Pamela Anderson Pamela Anderson was born in Canada, but came to America with the hopes of stardom as she strived to launch herself into a big modeling career. Anderson became almost instantly recognizable after starring in her first commercial, resulting in her landing her first big television roles in “Home Improvement” and “Baywatch.” Anderson has also made a few big appearances in Playboy: she was recognized as Playmate of the Month in February 1990. In addition to her modeling and acting fame, Anderson has also had a couple of highly publicized marriages to rockers Tommy Lee and Kid Rock; in her relationship with Tommy Lee, she was unfortunately struck with Hepatitis C. Anderson and Tommy Lee are big fans of tattoos, and the two happened to share a needle when they were getting inked up: Lee already had the virus, and when the needle was shared it was transmitted to Anderson through blood to blood contact. Hepatitis C is treatable (not curable), so it is not expected to have a large impact on Anderson’s long term health overall.

8. Lil Wayne Lil Wayne is generally considered to be a tough dude, but being tough doesn’t make you immune to the nasty effects of the world; this mainstream rapper has been topping charts and producing hit albums since 1999, and selling out venues for as long as he has been producing music, but his greatest fear when performing on stage isn’t filling seats…it’s staying conscious.

Dwayne Carter (Wayne’s real name) has dealt with Epilepsy his entire life, which is a neurological condition that can cause unexpected and severe seizures at any point.

Throughout his life time Wayne has suffered several seizures, but it wasn’t until he was hospitalized after suffering three consecutive seizures that he announced his condition. Prior to his announcement, his marketing team was quick to deny any sort of medical issues, swatting aside all of his hospital visits as recreational, and claiming that the star was just experiencing some rather severe migraines. Carter is aware of the different things that can contribute to triggering his episodes, but has remained committed to providing the highest intensity performances he can, stating that the fan’s enjoyment comes first.

9. Prince Prince is not just his stage name, but it is also part of his actual real life name: Prince Nelson. Of course, Prince Nelson doesn’t sound quite as cool as “Prince,” so the musician made the decision to shorten it down. Hailing from the state of Minnesota, Prince has been one of the biggest acts in R&B and Pop for more than three decades and it’s easy to see why. With nearly 100 singles to his name, Prince has reached the top of the charts five times, and he has also had a total of eight albums which have gone to number one worldwide. When Prince was growing up in his home state of Minnesota he struggled with epilepsy, meaning that he suffered from seizures on an almost regular basis. Fortunately for Prince the seizures have become increasingly rare thanks to massive improvements in treatment for the disease. Although Prince will always have epilepsy, it is highly unlikely that his fans will ever see him suffer on stage. Despite the seizures being gone now, Prince openly talks about the struggle he faced as a child, and of his gratitude now for being seizure-free.

10. Bret Michaels Bret Michaels hasn’t particularly been relevant in quite a long time, but the lead singer of the band “Poison” was on the top of everyone’s tongue back in his prime; during the band’s peak years in the late 80s and early 90s it was one of the hottest musical acts around, selling over 45 million albums of which 15 million of them were from the United States. Time has certainly not been kind to Michaels, for as he has continued to grow older his health has continued to deteriorate. In 2010 Michaels was admitted to the hospital after experiencing a brain hemorrhage and an unusual numbness in the left side of his torso, which led to the discovery of a literal hole in his heart. Bret’s medical condition is treatable and operable, but he will continue to be at increased risk of both heart disease and stroke, but the star claims that his family has given him the strength and support to manage it all. Developing a hole in your heart is no minor matter: perhaps the rock legend should of held off on some of that liquid poison earlier on in life.

11. Morgan Freeman At 77 years old, Morgan Freeman has accomplished a heck of a lot over the course of his acting career, which is even more incredible when you learn that he was well into his 50s when he first began to make a name for himself in Hollywood. Freeman has one of the most iconic voices in entertainment history, which has helped him to land roles which have led to a total of five Academy Award nominations. Aside from an outstanding number of nominations, Freeman also has an Academy Award win to his name: Best Supporting Actor in 2005 from his role in “Million Dollar Baby.” It wasn’t until 2013 that Freeman admitted he was suffering from Fibromyalgia; the disease has caused shooting pain in Freeman’s arm, and has caused him to scale back on the time he can enjoy his hobbies outside of Hollywood. Because of the intense pain he feels during travel, Freeman no longer gets to enjoy flying airplanes or cruising around on his sailboat: Fibromyalgia causes severe muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of sleep. A debilitating disease to contract, fans would never know that Freeman suffered silently from fibromyalgia simply because of his dedication and work ethic.

12. Sarah Hyland You will probably recognize Sarah Jane Hyland from her role as Haley Dunphy on one of ABC’s most popular sitcoms, “Modern Family.” Hyland has been acting since she was only five years old, and s currently a go-to actress for lower budgeted films, T.V. shows, and advertisements: she has quite the portfolio! The only thing holding back Hyland from racking up even more film credits was a kidney disease that she has suffered from since birth; her kidney was underdeveloped and would become inflamed if she subjected herself to extensive physical activity.

Having a kidney that could shut down if you strain yourself too much is one of the worst things an actor can have, since obviously acting requires you to invest yourself into your performance. When Sarah’s kidney quality began a steep decline in late 2011 her father stepped forward as a donor, and in 2012 her kidney was replaced. After the transplant Jane still has to be somewhat careful on set, as an untimely injury could render her in need of a new kidney donor, and her options are a bit dried up now.

13. Cher It is hard to believe that it has been 50 years since Cher came out with her first hit, “I Got You Babe,” alongside her then husband, Sonny Bono; since then, Cher has been an icon in the pop music industry: landing her the nickname of the “Goddess of Pop.” Cher signed a deal in 2008 to perform at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for three years, an act which netted her nearly $200 million in earnings (needless to say, it has been quite the career).

Cher suffers from a rather inconvenient disease known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or more commonly known as the chronic fatigue syndrome; this disease can cause pain across every part of the body, as well as a lack of sleep, which drastically affects the health and stability of the people who suffer from it. Cher has been able to battle through her Encephalomyelitis without having to disrupt her shows; what is even more astounding is that even if she did rest that it wouldn’t help her chronic fatigue, which means that this disease poses even more stress every day, which can often result in cases of extreme depression.

14. Robin Roberts Robin Roberts is one of the most famous broadcasters on ABC, starring on the show “Good Morning America.” Robin always had a passion for the T.V. industry and originally started her career as a sports caster; of all the celebs on this list she probably had it the worst: she developed a case of breast case and had to undergo intense cancer treatment and surgical operations in a fight to stay alive. Beating breast cancer is generally a time for celebration, but in Roberts’s case it was only the start of a new heart wrenching battle for her health! Five years after her tussle with cancer, Robin Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome: a disease rooted directly in her bone marrow; on the day that Roberts came forward with her diagnosis on the air, bone marrow donations skyrocketed 1800% in a single day, and she took a leave from work so that she could receive a transplant. After returning to the air Roberts went on to win a handful of awards, but her health has still been a constant battle, and over the past few years she has found herself hospitalized a few times for her conditions.

15. Tom Hanks When you’re having a discussion about who is the best actor of all-time, the discussion will usually include Tom Hanks; Hanks has been the star of some of the biggest films to ever be made, including hits like: “Forrest Gump,” “Toy Story,” and “Saving Private Ryan.” Hanks has become incredibly decorated throughout his career, winning multiple Academy Awards and Golden Globes.

Hanks’s films have earned more than $8 billion worldwide, which is among the highest earnings to ever be reported in the industry. In 2013, Hanks revealed on “The Late Show with David Letterman” that he had been in a pre-diabetic stage since he was 36 years old; in a twist of horrible fate that same year, Hanks’s pre-diabetes was escalated to a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, which means that his blood sugar isn’t as regulated as it is in a normal body. It’s currently estimated that 29 million people in the United States have some form of diabetes, and that another 8 million have it and are completely unaware, so as Wilford Brimley would say: “check your blood sugar.”

16. Michael J. Fox Everyone familiar with Michael J. Fox is probably aware that he suffers from Parkinson’s disease, but some readers may not be aware just how severe his case actually is: his condition is so advanced that it renders him incapable of completing most basic tasks, and he is often accompanied by a loved one who helps him to navigate parts of everyday life. Michael announced his disease while starring in the third season of “Spin City,” and promptly left the show right after to spend more time with his family and friends; he had no idea to what extent his condition would disable him, and he wanted to live normally with the closest people in his life for as long as possible. Since his diagnosis, Fox has become a massive activist in the search for Parkinson’s treatment, and he founded the Michael J. Fox foundation as a means of funding stem cell research, and connecting people with Parkinson’s to the resources they need to live a better more fulfilled life. Fox has said that his disease is certainly a horrible one, but that he enjoys his current life with his family and wouldn’t trade it for the world: a trade that most probably wouldn’t be too eager to make.
