‘speculations’ regarding her personal life, professional regrets and more
February 2016 | Global Movie
Katrina Kaif talks about being unfazed by media scrutiny regarding her personal life, not doing women-centric films unlike her contemporaries, upcoming film ‘Jagga Jasoos’ and other topics
I am ready to turn on the recorder and shoot a long list of questions at Katrina Kaif when the actress, sitting pretty in casual clothes and zero make-up, excuses herself and furiously types out something on her phone. It’s a message for her mother, she explains. Katrina Kaif “Mom’s here only for a day and I was supposed to reach home half an hour ago. I will have only the night with her; she has an early morning flight,” she shrugs. After hitting the ‘send’ button, she takes a moment to lean back on the couch. ‘Shoot’, she says. Excerpts from the interview:
Was it lack of belief from the directors’ side? No. Was it lack of choice? No. Was it a lack of vision from my side? Yes. I didn’t have the vision. My headspace and interest were different. But that’s how you learn from your mistakes. So, as much I may say I didn’t have the vision then and that I feel a certain change within me now, life will present me with right opportunities at the right time. Maybe, the time then was not right for me and hopefully, it (the opportunity) will come to me when I am completely ready.
Q. What’s your instant reaction when you see yourself on the big screen? A. Honestly, I can’t watch my films on the big screen. I am too critical. Some people I know watch their films so intensely, they can just watch their entire movies coming on TV and I am like, ‘How do you do that?’ Everyone is different. I watched a few of my films in trails, but I do analyse in bits and parts where I could have been better and what could have been done differently and what to learn from an experience.
Q. You don’t belong to the industry, but you are now counted among the A-listers. Do you feel secure about your position? Or is this an industry where you cannot afford to kick back and relax?
Q. Who’s your worst critic in the industry?
A. In any industry, especially acting, complacency can always be a distraction. You have to remain alert, evolve, change, adapt and constantly innovate, otherwise you are not going to be exciting to your audience. I never need my audience to tell me if I am becoming stale or repetitive because I know that already to change it or break it. But as long as you can see it, the intention is there; an actor keeps reinventing himself/ herself..
A. I think Adi (Aditya Chopra) has fair opinion. I don’t know if it’s fair or not, but I respect his opinion.
Q. What challenges have you faced in reinventing yourself? A. The biggest struggle has been to improve my Hindi because it’s not my first language, which I often wish it were. I think in English and translate my thoughts in Hindi. I have worked very hard, but still have to put in a lot of effort. I always speak in English. The only people I talk to in Hindi are the ones who have been working at my house for many years. With them, I go on interacting in Hindi. Everyone has their own battles. For someone, it might be dance, for another, it might be doing action, but this (Hindi) is my cross to bear and I will have to constantly work on it.
Q. It is important to have a USP to make a mark in this industry. Shah Rukh Khan is known for romance, Vidya Balan and Kangana Ranaut for their acting chops, Shahid Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan are good dancers. What is your unique skill? A. For me to say what my USP is would be slightly presumptuous. I will have to allow the audience to give me that feedback. If you analyse what films of mine have been well received, what performances or dance numbers are fondly remembered, then you know my USP.
Q. Some of your contemporaries have gained filmmakers’ confidence and have been doing women-centric films. But why have you, so far, not done any film that will solely ride on your star power? A. The reason is my choice. I am responsible for my own choices. Have I been offered female-centric films? Many.
A. Myself.
Q. No one else?
Q. A lot of actors are venturing into production or other businesses. Do you also have similar plans? A. I am not superiorly business-minded but I have a few ideas. I am not sure in which direction it will go. These ideas are of different aspects related to the film industry. I am just getting started now, so, let’s see.
Q. Your personal life is talked about more than your acting. A. Any actor who is in the public eye has to deal with it. It literally goes hand in hand with your profession.
Q. You always shy away from talking about your life. Do you think that generates more curiosity? A. I don’t think so. It takes me two lines to say ‘I don’t talk about my personal life’, but if I start speaking about it, I will have to say 10 sentences, or maybe 20 or two pages to discuss each and every situation as it comes. It is for this and many other reasons that I choose to not discuss it at all.
Q. Much has been said about your break-up with Ranbir Kapoor. Will it not be tough for you both to shoot together for ‘Jagga Jasoos’? A. This, I think, is a personal question because you are trying to assume my status. So, I would only like to say that my personal life is personal. And ‘Jagga Jasoos’ is a wonderful film and Inshallah, it will turn out well.
Q. Do you feel bogged down by the media’s constant scrutiny of your personal life? A. It is okay. Actors have to accept it as a part of their job. The more you make it into a monster, the more it will become a monster for you. If you accept it as just something that goes hand in hand with an actor’s life and not let it rattle you or start reacting to every story, then you will be okay. You understand that it is just speculation, just articles, and when you separate that from your professional life, you are fine. February 2016 | Global Movie

Sunny Side Up
Back with Ghayal Once Again, Sunny Deol talks to Team Box Office India about the sequel to his hugely popular 1990 film

February 2016 | Global Movie
What was it like promoting this film?
It has been tiring but nice because it is necessary. Shooting a film does not tire me as much as promoting a film does. Looking back, there weren’t any norms for film promotion, earlier. What do you think has changed?
It starts with one thing and becomes a habit driven by insecurity, which makes people go overboard sometimes. All I know is that now that I am seen and I am doing so much, I can feel the buzz. Earlier, there was no awareness. Back then, cinema was different as was the approach to cinema. People used to watch a film because they wanted to. It wasn’t just a weekend outing as it is now. Then, if a film was good, it would do good business. Now good or bad doesn’t matter as it is more about being a weekend game. Now filmmakers realise that even if a film is not good, we will get good weekend numbers if we promote it nicely. Now, success is the yardstick for a film’s business rather than its content. That is a wrong notion and will get corrected in due course. You have been part of many iconic blockbusters. What was it about Ghayal that made you revisit it?
Ghayal was the film with which I became a producer and because of it, I got to understand what my vision was and why I wanted to make a film like Ghayal. When Raj (Kumar Santoshi) came to me, no one knew him at that time. He had brought a producer along and when I said I loved the story, the producer soon vanished. I took the script and hunted high and low for a producer. I approached all my friends and everyone else I knew but no one understood the story. Then I went to papa (Dharmendra) and he liked it and I became the producer. So the film is very dear to me. While becoming a producer, there was a lot of fight as cinema was very different back then. After shooting the film and its release, I had not anticipated the way people and the media had responded to it. Everything was totally unexpected. I have always believed it is one’s work that speaks, so the film became very dear to me. I wanted to make a second part then itself but people were not doing such things then. Raj didn’t want to do it, so I too forgot about it. So I have been trying to make a sequel to the film for many years now. Eventually, I became the director and writer of the film too. (Laughs)
Back then, with Ghayal, we were very specific about why we were making it and what we were doing. So, when making its sequel, I wanted to be equally clear about the story I chose and why I was choosing it. It wasn’t just for the sake of making a sequel. But Ghayal was set in a very different time. What steps have you taken in the sequel to make it contemporary?
At that time, it was considered modern. Keeping today’s times in mind, I have brought my subject and my character to where he would be from that time to the present and there is also his evolution in terms of what he has gone through. The story is about the character going forward and it is also about today’s society. Along with bringing in life experiences, there are also things we go through and see. I just wanted to make my film so relevant that whoever watches it, sees something of himself in the film. One usually expects action or drama in a Sunny Deol film. Will we see that in this film too?
Well, when I did Gadar, I played a truck driver and a musician, toh tabhi socha nahin ke image yeh hai aur yeh yeh karna hai. I didn’t take it seriously. Most of the time, the story focuses on the character, who is very strong and positive and there is definitely going to be some kind of drama and fights in the movie. It’s not like Ajay Mehra (his character) will sit tight. He questions what’s happening or why a something isn’t happening. Now that the film is ready for release, how happy or satisfied are you with what you had set out to do, and what you have achieved?
I am very happy with it. I am waiting for my special effects to get finalised and then I will know how pukka my special effects are. But from the content point of view, I think I have got it right. You worked with four youngsters in this film. What made you choose a younger team for Ghayal Returns?
My film had to relate to youngsters. All of us have been teenagers at some point, and our beliefs are so strong at that age. Then after getting a job, suddenly woh cheezein compromise hona shuru ho jaate hain. It is an age where you have definite views, so I have placed the story accordingly, taking it as a centrepoint, so that they control the environment around us and because they put their foot forward or make mistakes, it has a ripple effect. February 2016 | Global Movie
Was it a challenge to scout for those fresh faces?
Can we expect a Part Three to Ghayal?
You also have a foreign action director, Dan Bradley on board. What was it like to work with him? Will the youngsters also be doing action in the film?
All your films are also known for action and dialogue. When you were writing the dialogue for the sequel, how did you make sure it was fresh?
The reason I chose a foreign action coordinator was because I have worked with several of them before, ever since my first film Betaab. Again with Ghayal, it is very real but also a little larger-than-life, so I wanted the action to gel with that. I have watched a lot of Hollywood films and I was very fond of the Bourne Ultimatum and Bourne Identity, where the action is very real and it is of the same pace. That’s why I took him on because that is what I wanted in my film.
It doesn’t happen that way. The lines from my films that are popular even today… we didn’t know back then that they would be remembered even today. That’s what I love about myself. I have done the same in this film too. There is a story and there is a character and the dialogue is about what he will say in the given situation rather than uske liye pehle dialogues banao phir uspe fit karo. I don’t believe in that.
(Laughs) Well, this is my asset. I want to do so much It wasn’t a challenge. The script demanded fresh faces, more. I hope this film works so that I can venture out and it is always best to choose people who are fresh so and do more stuff that I really believe in. I believe today’s that there is no image attached to them. Conveying the youth need to see that it is not only about gimmicks and cosmetics. We have to look deep into our society and film’s message becomes that much easier. deep into our country. There are so many things out You are not only the lead actor in the film but there which we should bring into our cinema because also the director and producer. How did you cinema is a reflection of us and it is an indirect way juggle all these roles? educating people. I want it all to happen. I had decided from the beginning that I would have Is there any other film of yours that you would to do all this so that I wouldn’t have to think later ke like to remake? yeh mein kya kar raha hoon. But, at that time, I Let’s see how people respond to this film and then I will open the box, but, of course, sensibly. simply plunged right in; this time, I was prepared.
February 2016 | Global Movie
Cinema has become more about good scripts and different kinds of roles, which even actresses are now doing. Are you also open to such roles, even if you don’t direct?
have always done films with new people and producers. That’s why dekhte dekhte picture atak jaati hai… Even with directors… I have worked with many new directors for the simple reason there is so much honesty in what Yes, I have done quite a lot of those films but because they want to do. Obviously, they have talent because they have been dramatically strong, they are known as they have been able to convey their vision to me. It is fun ‘action films’ but there were also different characters to work with them because you see an honest product that I have done. Again, of late, I have done films which that has been brought out without any malice. There is have not released yet. There is Mohalla Assi, which is no other agenda. What was it about this role and this film that made you say I want to play this part. As an actor I think you are looking for things to challenge you and of course, excite you. When I heard the script from Bejoy and from Vinod Chopra, it was something that I connected with very, very strongly. It is a character I haven’t played before. It is set in a world that I enjoy tremendously as a viewer watching, but I have never been a part of that world in any film, either that I have directed or been in as an actor. It is a really, really well written script. It is a story with great heart. At the same time it has got all the elements of a thriller. It really moves you. I think that is something that will really surprise people because they expect it to be a thriller, but they don’t know how moving the story is because at the heart of it it really is a story of friendship. And it is a story of discovering love again. Finding redemption. Dealing with your own personal demons. There are many such things that are layered in the script. The way Abhijat and Vinod have written it – they have struck a beautiful balance between the pace that is needed for a thriller and the kind of depth that is needed for an emotionally told story. They have struck that balance really well.
With each role you really become the character, how do you find him, imbibe him to become him? What is your process and how do you find your characters? Initially it starts off with reading the script… many times! Because you know the more you read it somehow the more familiar that person becomes to you and you start seeing the lines in a way that you feel are appropriate for the kind of person that he is. Then, of course, the director is there to give you a lot of background in terms of where he is from and where he trained and everything. Then you draw from your personal experiences. I know many people in the police force here in Mumbai and also many who were part of the ATS, which is the Anti Terrorism Squad. I know many of them. I have met them at social occasions, I have met them in their workspace. So I have seen their body language and seen the way they speak, the way they behave when they are in different kinds of situations. At the same time there is a certain way and kind of decorum that is always there and a certain respect. There is this aura that they have around them because of just
February 2016 | Global Movie
the power that they possess. You know, it is interesting they are not really revealing of their true emotions. I am sure they are when they are at home when they are with their families, but you know when they are out there it is very guarded. It is very interesting to see. You have to understand all that and then to somehow bring that into the way you move in the film. The way you sit in the film. The way you speak in the film. It is very interesting to just bring all that experience in to play.
Of course, you are starring with the incredible Mr. Bachchan. What is it like to do prepare and then do a scene with him? It is interesting. It is very, very interesting. There were actually eight days straight of just rehearsals and readings. You know, we did a lot of readings in his house as well. That kind of really helped in terms of breaking the ice of the fact that now we are going to be in a film and working scenes together. I think if I just met him on the first day on set it would have been pretty nerve wracking! (Smiles) So that really did help. But still, at the same time, on the first day of filming there is still something that is unique when you are finally in costume and you are on set and you are realizing that right now, on that day what will be captured is what the audience is going to see. They will never see what happened in the reading room. They will never see what happened in those rehearsals, but they are going to watch this. There was a very strange kind of surreal feeling that I had for a good like half an hour to an hour when we were initially rehearsing on set that really did take me some time to get over. It was like ‘okay I am finally on set with him and this is what he is going to look like in the scene and this is what I am going to look like in the scene (laughs) now I just have to get this out of my head and come back into this moment because I am really having a bit of an out of body experience.’ (Laughs)
Yes, I can see you saying okay I am sitting opposite him…. acting! Yes! And you know my introduction into movies was by watching his movies. It was very, very surreal to be sharing screen space with him.
And you directed him in Lakshya; did you ever imagine What would you say to someone if they asked you why that one day you would be acting opposite him? should I go see Wazir? No, never, never. I mean when I made Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya and Don, I had no intention whatsoever in acting in films. That was a very different experience because he was one member of a cast that was a very, very big cast and as a director you have to give equal attention to everyone. My time was very divided so I did not get as much time as I got on this film to spend with him when I directed Lakshya. This was a very, very different experience of working with him on a film.
How was it to work with director Bejoy Nambiar? You know Bejoy and me have known each other for many years. We have been speaking about wanting to do something together many times for many years. Somehow it just never happened. It was kind of cool when Vidhu Vinod Chopra called me he said he has this script and Bejoy has agreed to direct it. I was very, very kicked! At that time I had not heard the script but I had always wanted to work with Bejoy because I think he is a very talented boy. It was nice to know that he was on board already. That kind of added to the enthusiasm of wanting to hear the script. I knew that if I get into in and I enjoy the script, then I definitely will have a nice time making the film because he is going to be directing it.
I believe this is your first action movie as an actor; did you enjoy shooting those scenes? I was telling Bejoy actually, you know I have done a couple of films before this in which I have always been at the receiving end of some slap or something or other. (Laughs) It is really nice when I can finally give it back to other actors. (Laughs) I enjoyed it tremendously. I got to punch people, kick people, jump off of buildings, do bike chases, car chases, fire guns. It was an amazing time! We had a great action team. I always felt safe when I was doing all this stuff. It was a lot of fun to do! I am looking forward now to doing more action in films to come.
What are your thoughts on the music ofWazir? The music, I feel, is very, very charming. It is very, very melodious. What I enjoy the most about it is there is a very strong focus in terms of composing and in terms of production especially of the song where there has been a lot of respect given to the writing of the song – to the lyric of the song. That is something I think that over time songs have started tending to get over produced! The lyrics start getting drowned out and you can’t even understand what somebody is saying anymore. Just culturally, as a people, we are not a race of people who just enjoy listening to the music. We want to sing the song! When you can’t hear what is being said, somehow you can never connect with the music. Especially as well as it may be composed as well as it maybe produced if you can’t hear what the singer is saying. These songs take you back to that time when you just enjoyed listening to a song, where you could just play it while you are having a cup of tea and a samosa (Laughs) and just listen to some really good lyrics. It takes you back to that. And of course, there is wonderful singing by Sonu, Shreya and Ankit – they have sung the songs beautifully. The songs are very well written. I just love it that there is an album that is very classical in terms of the way it is produced for people to listen to and I think people are really responding to it that way. There are messages on my social feed where people are saying, ‘Oh finally I can hear the lyrics’, ‘Oh finally a song that feels like a good love song that I have not heard for a long time’. I think the only difference is that this has been produced the way it should be. I think that is the big difference. They are very soulful.
I think in a nutshell it probably would just be that it is just a good movie. It is a good film. Of course, you want to be part of good movies all the time, and you endeavor to make good films all the time, but there are certain movies that give you a kind of belief when finally you are done with it and when you watch that film. They give you a belief and that confidence to be able to tell people you really should watch this film and I feel really proud to be part of this movie. I think that is basically it. It is a good film. I just hope people go and support a good film.
Looking back over your career as an actor what would you say? It has been a pretty intense, amazing and a fun journey. I have had the great pleasure on working on some very interesting films in a relatively short period of time. Directors have trusted me, someone who is not really, really that old in the world of acting, they have trusted me with some really, really challenging roles. I feel very fortunate to part of every film that I have done.
If you were going to direct you, what would you tell yourself? What are you doing behind the camera, do you mind going out there to perform please. (Laughs) That would be my first thought! (Laughs) But possible it would be to try and get all my prep work done before I come on set so when I am on set I can just focus on the performance. I think that would be it. You know, people have done it very successfully in the past, where they have directed and acted in the same film, but I find the job so varied from each other, they are so different, the demands are so different, I don’t know if that is something I would be able to do or not. I guess time will tell but at this moment I’m not ready at all.
You are also now currently shooting Rock On 2. So how is that going? It is coming along really, really well. I am so excited that the sequel is finally happening. It is back to that world of music that I love. It is back to those characters that were so enjoyable. It is a completely new canvas for the film. It is set in the Northeast, which is really on some levels the rock capital of India. We have a new cast that is joining us. So all in all, it has just been an amazing experience so far! Just over half is done in terms of filming and in January we start filming again.
After you finish Rock On 2, what is next for you? At this moment I haven’t really made up my mind as what I want to do after Rock On 2. What I do want to do is write some things down that have been on my mind. That is one thing I want to do. The other thing I want to do is go into a recording studio. I have written a lot of songs. Just for myself – like independent music that I want to get into a studio and think about producing it properly and kind of doing something with it. My thoughts and my ideas a lot more and instead of a character’s in a film.
A message to your fans? I think what I always feel like I should say is just thank you so much for these years of support. It really is not possible for us to do what we do if it is not for that. I hope on the 8th of January when Wazir does release that you go and support this film. I do believe very, very sincerely that it is a good film. I do hope you go and enjoy it! How did Airlift happen for you? The director Raja Menon and Nikhil Advani, who has produced the film, came to me with the script. I immediately said yes, because it’s a real story and a human drama. It’s a story that was hidden in the recesses of history. I loved the idea of bringing it out to the audiences and show them what exactly happened in 1990. Your role is based on the life of Ranjit Katyal, who is a businessman in Kuwait. Could you tell us more about that? That’s true but I cannot talk about him. He’s still alive and a big businessman today, living in Kuwait. But I didn’t meet him. Raja Menon met him and spoke to him over the phone. But my character isn’t completely based on one person. There were three or four people like him, who were involved in the operation. We’ve combined all their stories for the character but Ranjit Katyal was the main guy. We’ve changed his name in the film. I should bring to your notice that in 1990, he was a multimillionaire but he lost everything, got everybody back to India from Kuwait and today, he’s a multimillionaire again. He’s earned back all his money. How did you prepare for your role? I didn’t do any kind of preparation for Airlift. I grew my beard. When you read a script, you feel and you go on the set and realise what they must have felt. Main Kuwait toh jane se raha (I’m not jumping on a flight to Kuwait); neither will I tell anyone to conduct a bomb attack so I could feel what they went through. I’d once watched Balraj Sahni’s Waqt and I can never forget that the happy family in the film experiences an earthquake and their lives are left in shambles. Everything is gone. That movie stuck in my mind. The same thing happened with Ranjit Katyal. Lots of people lost their lives and you know, the biggest trouble was that the Iraqis were killing a lot of Kuwaitis. And they use to come to Indians and ask, “Kuwaiti? Show me your passport?” But when you work outside India, you cannot keep your passport with you. You have to give it to your boss. So they use to kill Indians, too.
Did you know about the evacuation when it happened? I entered the industry in the same year, 1990, when this happened. I was unaffected by what was happening at that time, but when I got to know about it recently, it’s unbelievable. They have so many videos of it also. Do you think Airlift is a film everyone should watch? People should take their children to watch this film and this episode should be in school textbooks because when we talk about history, they don’t mention the operation. There’s a big political reason why they didn’t talk about it. At the time, we were very close to Saddam Hussein and we wanted to keep very low profile, which is why the whole thing was hidden. There was only one article written about it. It’s an honour to do a film like Airlift. We hear you’ve learned Arabic especially for the film… I have spoken little Arabic in it, but I must say that it’s a very hard language. It was not easy for me to pick up. When they gave me the lines, I had to memorise and then say them. But if you ask me to repeat them now, I can’t. What was it like working with Nimrat Kaur? Nimrat has worked in Hollywood. So who’s the bigger star - me or her? (Laughs). She has done some of the scenes so well. She is an international actress. After Airlift, you’ll be seen in Housefull 3 and Neeraj Pandey’s Rustam. Tell us more about them. Rustam, is similar to Airlift, in the sense that it is also based on a real character and his story. I enjoy everything that’s why I’m signing it and doing it. Action comedies are comfortable for me but an allout action film is challenging for me. So, I enjoy doing that. While Rustam is a challenging role, Housefull 3 is a comfortable one.

TUSSHAR KAPOOR:
Sunny Leone has gained respect and a bigger fanfollowing after the sexist interview!
Mastizaade is about two guys, who are sex addicts and big womanizers... The Mastizaade actor also reveals about the excitement for his first full fledged film with the actress… After the release of Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, Tusshar Kapoor looks ahead to his next film, which released today Mastizaade. Talking to us EXCLUSIVELY, Tusshar reveals about his excitement for the film, his equation with Sunny Leone, his issues with the Mastizaade producers and much more. Excerpts follow…
February 2016 | Global Movie
Two back to back sex comedies featuring you, first Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and now Mastizaade, how does the start to 2016 feel? It feels really exciting. We (Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3) released a comedy and not a sex comedy coz we had no choice and as people were expecting a lot more than what was shown, the film suffered. But I am not looking back, I am happy and now even more excited as Mastizaade is releasing and it has all the masala. It has whatever that people are expecting and though it took long to get censored, we guess the battle is won and has all the masala. However, reports indicated that the film has received a lot of cuts. Is it true? It’s not true. There were, of course, a few cuts but the final product is definitely what it promises to be. The film is in that Grand Masti zone and Mastizaade is exactly what the trailer is promising. I am very excited about the film’s release. KKHH 3 has already released and is doing decent business at the box office. Are you happy with the collections or did you expect more? Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 has done average business and yes, I expected more but it is not bad considering that we released with a film like Airlift. I don’t feel the collections are bad, but I think it could have done much better if the circumstances were different. Tell us a bit about Mastizaade and your part in the film? Mastizaade is about two guys, who are sex addicts and big womanizers. Their life takes a turn when they fall in love with these two girls, who are twin sisters and how that really changes their course of life and a roller coaster ride begins for them is the basic premise. They then go to Thailand to win their love, but fate has something else in mind and so they go through a number of hurdles and that’s when the comedy really goes to another level. As you said you fall in love with one of the twins and the part is played by Sunny Leone. Tell us a bit about your equation with Sunny. I have a very good equation with Sunny Leone since the Laila song to Mastizaade. She is a friend and I was the one who pushed for her for the Laila song. I was also the one who introduced Milap to Sunny during the Ragini MMS 2 success party, where Milap was talking about approaching her for the film and I introduced them and the rest is Mastizaade. I’ve had an equation with Sunny since she started and we hit it off from then on. I am super excited of my first full-fledged film with Sunny. My first ever, full-fledged adult sex comedy has come out and I am excited.
Recently, she faced a very sexist interview but she still maintained her composure. What is your take on it? She was completely calm and very very poised and wasn’t shaken up at all and that shows her strength and ability to deal with all kinds of adversities and I’ve always known about this part of her, so I am not surprised. I think Sunny has gained much more respect and an even bigger fan following after that interview, so I think she’s definitely here to stay and I don’t think she needs support as she strong herself. Recently, it was reported that you had a fallout with the makers of the film over some payment. Is it true? That is true, but I don’t want to comment on it because I’d rather let us sort it out fully than going to the media with that. Given that situation, I am still completely for the film because it is my labour of love, it is my baby and whatever my issue is with the producer, I still hope that Mastizaade does well. I am the hero in the film and we have gone through a lot of hurdles and won over several obstacles and finally the film is releasing today, so it deserves to get a very fair with the audience. So, I don’t want to get any negativity to Mastizaade right now. What I am going through with the producers, I think it will get sorted out on its own. Could you elaborate on your future projects? There is only one film that I have said yes to, which is Chicago Junction and it is by Kabir Kaushik. It is a period film, set in the gang wars of Uttar Pradesh in the 70s. It is a very different film and I am not allowed to talk much about it. You recently visited the Bigg Boss 9 house. If you were to offered Bigg Boss 10 or Khatron Ke Khiladi 8, would you participate in it? No, I would never participate in reality shows because I cannot be confined to one place. I am a very independent person and I could never gel with people every day, who are not my family or my friends and stay with them in a house. I am a different personality and it would be more work for me than fun, so I would never do it.
To end this interview, Tusshar give us 3 reasons why we should see Mastizaade! Entertainment… Entertainment… Entertainment…You could see it for, one that it is a full on masala adult comedy, second the music is amazing and third that it is a very good looking film February 2016 | Global Movie
Palak Muchhal: I feel like I am living my dream Barely three years in the industry and Palak Muchhal already has a roster of songs to her credit — from ‘Meri Aashiqui Tum Hi Ho’ to ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ now. The singer talks about her latest song ‘Hua Hain Aaj Pehli Baar’ and her journey in Bollywood so far. Palak Muchhal: I owe a great deal of my success to Salman sir
What was last year like?
I started my playback career in 2012 and last year has so far been the most productive. The year 2015 started with ‘Baatein Ye Kabhi Na’ (Khamoshiyan). Later, I sang in ‘Gabbar Is Back,’ ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. The year ended with ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ in which I had four songs. It has been a really gratifying experience and I want to keep working hard and entertaining the audience. ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ in which I had four songs. It has been a really gratifying experience and I want to keep working hard and entertaining the audience.
How did ‘Hua Hain Aaj Pehli Baar’ happen?
(Composer) Amaal Mallik and I go a long way back. I sang his very first song for a television series. For ‘Hua Hain Aaj Pehli Baar’ from ‘Sanam Re,’ he called me and said that the female singer has very few lines but he couldn’t imagine anyone else’s voice. Being a romantic song, Amaal requested me to infuse a little bit of ‘nakhra’ in my voice. ‘Sanam Re’ is a musical film and it is always special to sing in one since there is a lot of focus on the music. I am really glad to be a part of ‘Sanam Re’.
February 2016 | Global Movie
Tell us about your equation with Salman Khan.
Salman sir is the biggest support I have in this industry. He is the most amazing person I have ever met. He is a man with a golden heart and I consider him my godfather. I don’t think I would have been in Bollywood without him. Whether it is a personal or a professional decision, I always take his advice. He always supported me and ensures that I am a part of his films. Whenever I sing for his films, I give my 1000%.
Your brother Palash is also into music.
He is a music composer and I am a singer so we have very different careers. We don’t even discuss music at home, but we are always there whenever we need some help. He is doing well in his career and it’s an emotional feeling to see him grow on his own feet. Also, like any siblings, we have our own share of fights and arguments but we share a very strong bond. Palash and I have been doing concerts across the world for the last 15 years for young heart patients. We donate the entire earnings towards their operations. So far, we have
collected 3.36 crore rupees and 845 heart patients have been operated on. There are 412 remaining. Their blessings are the biggest award for me and I will continue to do this work for my life. I have been getting so much love that I have tasted success without much struggle. Earlier, I was able to help only one patient from one concert but now that my songs are getting popular, I am able to help almost 10 to 15 people.
How has your journey been so far?
The journey has been exciting so far. I feel like I am living my dream. I come from a Marwari family and didn’t have any connections in Bollywood. My family has always supported me. I started training when I was four years old. My mother didn’t leave any stone unturned to train me. I even learnt Urdu so I could get my pronunciations right. I always thought that it would take me more than
a decade to establish myself in the industry but I was lucky that as soon as I reached Mumbai, I met Salman sir because of whom I didn’t have to struggle much. A lot of actresses have started doing playback singing. It’s a good thing because earlier, we have seen singers who have also acted. I love Salman Khan’s singing. He has a raw voice and is very passionate about singing. We did a duet ‘Jumme Ki Raat’ (Kick) which was a different version from the film. I also love Shraddha Kapoor as a singer. She has a wonderful voice. I feel she should sing more often.
What’s in the pipeline?
I am excited for 2016 as I am working with composers like Himesh Reshammiya, Amaal Mallik, Jeet Gannguli and Pritam.

ftab Shivdasani: Everything is sanskari about ‘Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3’
Tusshar and Aftab — the porn stars who will tease, tickle and make your funny bone moan with their madness.
With a triple dose of spoofs, goofs and uproarious sexcapades — in the upcoming sex comedy ‘Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3,’ proudly called a ‘porn-com’ by the makers. Tusshar and Affy, who play adult movie stars in film, tell us all about the bard of the bawdy, the sanskar in this sex comedy and the taboo around it. And how all they want you to do is shake off your cares and watch their wares while they ‘pornicate’ your sensibility — with puns galore. It’s a roll...
February 2016 | Global Movie
At the outset, there is nothing sanskari about this movie, right? Aftab: Everything is sanskari about this film. In fact, the whole family featured in it is sanskari. They do what they do because they have to. Otherwise, they are absolutely normal people. Tusshar: The moral of the story is don’t judge a book by its cover. People should be known by their seerat (inner self) not by their soorat or profession. You don’t have to judge someone for being a porn star. The film is being called a porn-com. The first time I heard it I thought it was popcorn. Will our eyes really pop out while watching your antics on screen? Aftab: I was going to say it’s porn for the entire family, but it’s not (laughs). It is a porn family that eats together, drinks together and sleeps together (no pun intended). It is basically a ‘porntertainer’. I just made that up, not bad, eh? Tusshar: Other than all the madness, confusion and coolness that ensues between two families, there are also adult spoofs of Bollywood blockbusters. This concept is a thriving industry in Hollywood where the biggest films are spoofed.
It is a thin line. Though in the West this genre is widely accepted and enjoyed, in India a section of our audience still cringe at the idea. Aftab: I think the problem is with the term ‘sex comedy’, that’s why it is taboo. It should be rephrased as ‘adult comedy’. There are a lot of jokes in the film that are beyond sex and not just about sex. If we say adult comedy, it encapsulates everything, not just sexual jokes. Tusshar: Yes, the term throws people off. Big Hollywood stars like Robert De Niro, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford and Ben Stiller have done the most outrageous films, and alongside, they also do their gangster movies and all other kinds of roles. Why do we differentiate between films and call them highbrow or lowbrow. A lot of actors say... I don’t want my kids to watch this, I would be embarrassed. Whenever I have kids, I won’t force them to watch the films that I have done. But they should respect what I do and not cringe at my body of work. I am doing it for the audience. Both of you have found a foothold in this genre. Are you comfortable with it?
Aftab: Discussed ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3’ script with my wife
Aftab: I don’t think I have found my foothold in this genre. Yes, the sex comedies we have done have worked, but I have done different kinds of comedy and other films too. So has Tusshar. We don’t want to discard our universal audience and only stick to this genre.
Any fear that a film like this could get too outrageous, too raunchy?
Well, a lot of people enjoy such comedies, but they just don’t want to talk about it. Maybe double standards, or stigma?
Tusshar: If you focus just on the gags, then it won’t work because everything has to be part of a smooth story. A lot of people feel that sex comedies are a shortcut to success. It is quite the contrary. Comedy itself is no mean feat, and here we are doing a sex comedy in a country like ours where people are so sensitive. Without naming them, there are some recently released sex comedies that had the potential of shock value, but they didn’t work. So if a film in this genre is not made well, it can fall apart like a pack of cards. It is risque and risky.
Aftab: That is changing. A large section of people wanted to pan ‘Grand Masti’ as they thought it would be too vulgar. But they went to the theatre and laughed their hearts out. In fact, it was the women audience that made the film successful. The hubbies or boyfriends are usually worried about what the ladies will say about such a film. The moment the women start enjoying the humour, the men around them feel cool and comfortable about it.
Aftab: Exactly! If we try to force the humour or innuendo on somebody, then it is a problem. But if it is already there at the script level and we are enacting it, with the sole intention of making it look genuinely funny and not vulgar — then we can crack it without being offensive.
Tusshar: ‘Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3’ is not objectifying women; in fact we are the ones who are objectified here. The purpose is not to objectify a man or a woman. The idea is to make people laugh with situations that are bizarre and outrageous.
Sex comedies are often not so flattering to women, and are also blamed for objectifying them. Your take?
February 2016 | Global Movie
Most sex comedies in India are not so critic-friendly. Are you If you were locked up in a house for 90 days (like your co-star Mandana Karimi) who would you want for company? boys prepared to take it on? Aftab: Most of my films aren’t (laughs out loud!). We are Tusshar: I wouldn’t want to be locked up even with the not expecting reviews for this film. Why should it even be hottest woman in the world for so long. If it was just for a couple of days, I wouldn’t mind JLo for company. If it was reviewed? Let people decide if they want to watch it. any longer than that, I think we would kill each other. Tusshar: I don’t get upset with the reviews for such films. Aftab is right...there should be some films which are not Aftab: Only my wife! reviewed at all. Not a bad idea! A film like this should be reviewed like other films in this genre, and not compared with any other kind of film. At what age did you first watch porn? Were you caught by your parents? Tusshar: I watched it at 13. I was caught by my sister and her friends. One of them was so scandalised that she started crying. Aftab: I watched it at 14 at a friend’s place, on his VCR. While we were engrossed, his mom walked right behind and stood there. I panicked and fled the room and didn’t go back for days. I am sure he got whacked. Were you ever turned down just when you thought you were about to get lucky? Aftab: No, I was never turned down. Tusshar: I have faced rejection, but that’s a part of growing up. Have you ever been caught in the act? Tusshar: I have been very cautious and luckily I have never been caught in the act, though I think I started too early. I think a lot of people start early, they just don’t admit it. Aftab: I was just caught watching porn, not caught doing anything. One-night stands? Yes, maybe, never? Tusshar: Today, I would be in two minds about one-night stands. I need more interaction with a person before going ahead. It could be like a fling, but that doesn’t mean I will go to a club and pick someone up; I think I have grown out of that. But well, never say never. Aftab: I am happily married. For me, the thought of it is totally out.

AMAZING WAYS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH
Vinegar, which means ‘sour wine’ in French was first discovered around 5000 BC and has been used for various purposes in nutrition and medicine, and was a favourite with the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates. While we’ve all seen bottles of vinegar in our homes, most of us are familiar with the white distilled versions and not apple cider vinegar. What’s the difference, you ask? Well, the difference lies in the source of the two - distilled vinegar is made from either ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, while apple cider vinegar is made from fermented apple cider. While both these varieties have different uses, benefits and flavours, apple cider vinegar has higher nutrient value than its white distilled counterpart. Let’s take a look at the former variety of vinegar in more detail.
Apple Cider Vinegar contains various components like citric acid, formic acid, malic acid, lactic acid and succinic acid, and acetic acid, as well as nutrients from apples such as antioxidants.
1.
Keeps Your Heart Healthy
Studies show that consuming apple cider vinegar helps keep your heart in optimal condition, since it works on reducing elements of bad cholesterol such as triglycerides and low density lipoproteins, and helps improve levels of good cholesterol elements like high density lipo proteins, lowering cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular diseases.
2.
Maintains Blood Sugar Levels
Apple cider vinegar significantly reduces blood sugar levels and improves insulin resistance, making it a must in the daily diet of any person suffering from Type 2 diabetes, which is a result of elevated sugar levels in the body and the inefficient production of insulin. Diabetes can also lead to various other serious disorders, and hence it is best to keep it bay, which is something consuming apple cider vinegar regularly can help you with. Studies show that taking 2 tablespoons of it before going to bed every night can reduce fasting sugar levels by quite an extent.
3.
Aids Weight Loss
Apple cider vinegar is said to promote weight loss through a two-pronged approach – Firstly, it reduces blood sugar levels and helps improve insulin activity, and it also keeps you fuller for a longer time, ensuring you don’t snack on unhealthy foods, thereby reducing your calorie intake. Both of these, combined with a healthy lifestyle, can help you shed those extra kilos in the long term.
4.
Reduces the Risk of Cancer
Research shows that apple cider vinegar helps prevent various types of cancer by eliminating free radicals and deterring the irregular formation of cells. It is also said to help reduce the size of tumours.
Apart from being an anti-glycemic, anti-obesity, anti-carcinogenic and a pro-heart health agent, apple cider vinegar is also an extremely effective ant-bacterial due to the presence of acetic acid among its list of constituents. While ancient medical practitioners used it to clean wounds, today, it can be used as a natural preservative to store food for longer periods, as it helps kill harmful bacteria and also prevents their growth. Apple cider vinegar also detoxifies your body, eliminating harmful elements from it, due to its natural antioxidation properties. It is also known to be a solution for your acne troubles, a teeth cleanser, and a natural conditioner to get the thick bouncy hair you’ve been dreaming of! Apple cider vinegar can be used in the preparation of dressings, marinades, sauces, gravies and pickles. Although it is made from apples, it doesn’t have an overpowering flavor and actually has a less distinctive smell than that of white distilled vinegar. Now that you know the benefits of using apple cider vinegar as well as how you can include it in your daily diet, go pick up a bottle right away and indulge in its pure natural goodness. You will surely not be disappointed by the wonders it will do for your health!

What should an ideal meal plan look like?
Can you recommend some steps that ought to be taken to reduce inches as fast as possible? 1. Eat as soon as you wake up. Do not delay this meal. If you are looking to burn more fat start with some healthy fats like almonds, avocado or a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil. 2. Add a minimum of 5 grams of protein to your mid snacks. Low-carb almond cookies, peanut butter slice or chocolate stacks, all have above 5 grams per piece. A cup of yoghurt with flaxseed powder, half a scoop of protein shake with blueberries, two slices of full fat cheese with olives are also great fat burning snacks! 3. Eat according to your body clock. Not everyone needs to eat every 2 hours. A lot of people tend to gain weight with this strategy. So eat when you are hungry instead but do not starve yourself. That will definitely work against you. 4. Hydrate well all through the day. Being dehydrated will only put extra loads on your liver, which is where 80 per cent of your fat metabolism takes place. Off load it, nourish it and you’ll get rid of some inches too.
An ideal meal plan is the one that makes you feel mentally and physically fit. A plan where you are not constantly obsessing over food and a plan that keeps your cravings away. You need to set a fitness goal for yourself, get a full body fat analysis done and work up a strategy that focuses on making you lose fat and not “just” weight! It should be free of processed food and have an abundant supply of nutrients from fresh food and nutritional supplements. Tell us about the Protein Bake Shop and what was the idea behind setting it up? Protein Bake Shop is not just a healthier version of your favourite dessert. When you look closely at the nutrition label and ingredients, you’ll see how it’s a healthy snacking option for anyone trying to lose weight/ get fit/ fighting with allergies and intolerances and gain muscle mass. Anyone battling with sugar addictions and wanting to make improvements in their eating habits will benefit from switching to wholesome baking with natural sugars at the Protein Bake Shop. Also, people with metabolic syndrome like Type 2 diabetes, PCOD, insulin resistance, etc, can turn to the baked stuff from the protein power range, since the total carbs are kept under 10 grams. I’ve been practicing as a nutritionist for nearly 7 years now, and the amount of misinformation that exists in people’s mind about nutrition has always made me want to do something about it. People need to go beyond concepts like calorie counting, truly understand the effect of whole wheat, low fat dairy on their body and how it might not be the best option. Also, the misconception that fat is bad for you and your cholesterol and gives you heart attacks! In my opinion, all these nutritional beliefs come in the way of us leading healthier life’s. The concept of Protein Bake Shop is based on new age nutritional science where nutrients matter more than calories, fat is good for you, refined sugar is an absolute NO and ingredients like wheat and dairy are not what marketing gimmicks make them seem like. The quality and processing methods of these ingredients are compromised heavily, which makes them nutritionally very different compared to what they use to be decades ago.

Dr Anup feels as the lips don’t produce sebum, they dry very quickly. Try to look for an oil-based product instead of wax-based as they will help in healing the chapped lips.
The hot air from your blow dryer dries off your scalp and might irritate your skin too. Go for the tousled look or wavy style and give your blow dryer a break this season.

Make-up guide to wearing any lip colour right Red
PINK
Classic and always trending, red is best worn with jet black liquid eyeliner and liberal coats of mascara. However, try keeping the focus only on the lips. Keep your skin natural and dewy with sheer foundation. Ditch the blush and eyeliner and just swipe on a few coats of mascara.
Baby pink looks great on paler skin tones while deep pink is great if you have dusky skin. To avoid looking too girly, try monochromatic makeup. Use eye, lip and cheek colours in different shades and textures of pink. The trick works with almost every skin tone.
PURPLE The colour is so rich and vibrant, it’s best to have subdued makeup on the rest of the face. Sheercoverage foundation and soft eye make-up will let blue take centre stage. A light dusting of coral blush will complement the deep lipstick hue.

Black Take away its goth associations, and the colour black gets sophisticated. Keep the skin natural in coverage and finish. Pair the dark hue with a diffused smokey eye and surprise people who expect bold eyeliner.
Gold Although unusual, shades of yellow gold can lend a high-fashion feel to your beauty look. Reach for a highcoverage foundation to create a flawless base. Says makeup artist Clint Fernandes, “On the eyes, play up the energy of the lip colour by drawing a cat-eye and then tracing over the top of the black line with a white liner pencil to create a dual look.”
Orange The colour complements a sunkissed glow. When going for an orange lip, apply bronzer wherever the sun would naturally hit your face — on the forehead, highest points of the cheekbones, point of the nose, chin, and shoulder — to warm up the skin. Sweep pink blush on the apples of your cheeks for a natural warmth and balance.
Blue Blue has the ability to make your teeth appear whiter. Keep it simple when wearing blue lipstick by framing the eyes with a thin line of liquid eyeliner and using a sheer, tinted moisturiser. Says makeup artist Poonam Rawat, “The more discreet the rest of your make-up is, the better.”
Green Whether applied lightly for a sheer look or slicked on heavily for a dramatic effect a la Rihanna, green looks gorgeous. Since the shade tends to hide your natural lip colour, pair it with pink and red hues on the cheeks and eyes. “This will bring back your natural flush to other areas of the face,” says makeup artist Priya Kapur.
Silver
This fantasy metallic shade is perfect for dramatic eye make-up. Stick on a set of false eyelashes using make-up glue. A pop of pink blush add drama to the look, while balancing out the cool metallic effect of the lip colour.

PRITAM TALKS MUSIC
AND CREATING THE SONGS OF DILWALE – EXCLUSIVE
15dec_pritamdilwaleMusic director Pritam Chakraborty has been instrumental in creating the amazing music of the movies in the Hindi film industry. Think of the incredible sound of the songs of Life in a Metro, the hits of all three Dhoom films, and the brilliant tunes of Jab We Met. Not to mention the wonderful tracks of Gangster and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani as well as the beats of Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail and of course the outstanding tracks of Barfi. And this is just to name a few highlights of the soundtracks he has composed! Most recently, Pritam created the fabulous soundtrack to the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol action romance Dilwale, which is in theaters now. In fact, we loved the OST and gave it 4 stars! (You can read the review here) Pritam recently took time out of his very busy schedule to give us short but fabulous and fascinating interview about all things music including what goes into writing a love song. Check it out!
February 2016 | Global Movie
Over his amazing career, the composer has created music for so many different types of films and genres. So, how does he decide which films he wants to be a part of? “It really relies on certain factors like whether the director is a friend, if I have worked with him earlier. Sometimes it is that I like a script or I like a setting like if it is a musical setting or if it is a rom-com.” No matter the film, his starting point, he says, always begins from the narration of the script and then expands from there. “My music is totally influenced by the script. I generally hear the story, read the script and have to understand the characters.” Another important aspect he uses in his approach to create the sound of the songs is understanding the setting of the story. “For example, when it comes to a movie like Barfi, I would like to stick to a sound that was a retro Calcutta. We had to stick to that because the ambiance was like that and the film was set there and in the past. Similarly for Love Aaj Kal, it was a Punjabi setting so I went for a totally Punjabi kind of music. For Dilwale, there was sort of a motive to kind of hold the Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol love story and it was kind of deep – so that played a big part.” Pritam also touched upon the creating of a love song, “It has to do with how deep is the relationship. A lot of times if you see a love song, it has to be a deep love song, but sometimes the film does not establish enough love between the couples so the song can be lighter. Even in various genres of love songs or sad songs, the intensity or the depth differs according to the character and according to the setting of the film.” Talking specifically about composing the music for Dilwale he said, “As I said, when I start the film I like to read the script and hear the story and understand the characters and the scale of the film. Rohit did a complete narration and for every song he had a brief and narrated it to me song by song. What really stuck to me, when he did the narration, was the SRK-Kajol love story and the Kriti-Varun love story. What Shetty discussed with me about the music for this film is this – he wanted deeper meaning in the love songs for SRK – Kajol and little lighter for the Varun/Kriti romance. See, Varun, his character in Dilwale, is not so deep, so very deep love songs for Varun/Kriti would not have worked so much. Whereas… SRK and Kajol’s love story was quite deep so you need a little deeper and you needed little longer songs for them. More meaning.” I wondered what his process is when writing a song – does a tune run through his head until he has to put it down or does just sit and begin writing? “You know, it depends. The ideal situation is that there is a theme running through your head and you kind of develop it and you get it down. However, most of the time, since there is pressure and there is this particular brief, because film music is very dependent on the brief of the situation of the scene, most of the time it becomes that you sit and begin and look for a start, look for something to take stock in. I also never know if will take more time or less time – sometimes I get the correct tune very fast and sometimes it takes a lot of time to reach the correct place.” Pritam also revealed what genre of film is his favorite to compose music for, “I really do prefer doing romcoms over action films.” In fact, so much so that he wants to work mainly on doing music for romantic films, “In future, I am taking a conscious decision to stop doing action films and overtly comedy films and just stick to films which needs music as an important ingredient.”

Priyanka Chopra talks about her award win for ‘Quantico’ at 2016 People’s Choice Awards
There couldn’t have a better start to 2016 for Priyanka Chopra. The actress won the Favourite Actress in a New TV Series award at the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles for her international debut as FBI agent Alex Parrish in American TV series ‘Quantico’. Post a low-key celebration, PeeCee shares her joy with hitlist. “I was accompanied by my mother, my manager and a member of the ‘Quantico’ unit to the event. It was a bit strange initially since I did not know anyone else there, but got talking no less. As I had flown into LA hours before the ceremony, I downed five cups of coffee and chomped on a burger just before the proceedings began. When I land in LA, the first thing I do is order the In-N-Out hamburger — it is my favourite! And given that awards ceremonies are a long affair, I needed it to keep myself going. My stylist had lined up around 200 outfits for me to wear to the event, but I chose a Vera Wang sequined dress.” “I wanted to wear something I was comfortable in and would make it easy to move around. When my name was announced as the winner, I thought that this was the first time I have done it (act in a TV show) and I am winning an honour! Wow. It (‘Quantico’) was a learning experience and at the same time, it was exciting to bag an award. The awards ceremony was no different from the ones back home. It was the same chaos, same backstage rush… except that everyone was talking in English. I also presented an award to Vin Diesel for the Best Film category. We congratulated each other and spoke backstage. I was too tired to attend the post awards ceremony. My mom, manager and the ‘Quantico’ unit folk headed to a restaurant for our own quiet celebration. I begin shooting in Montreal for the next stint of ‘Quantico’ and will be back in Mumbai by April, but I might be flying in and out for a short while for my commitments back home.”

Kangana Ranaut wants to write book on her struggles
Actress Kangana Ranaut intends to write a book on her struggles in her life, which includes the period before she came to the film industry as well as her stint in it. “The way I dealt with my failures has been very heavy and I would like to write a book about that, how success will never teach you anything” said Kangana at the launch of journalist Barkha Dutt’s book, “The Unquiet India” here. “So I’ve been through struggle for 10 years, and I think that’s what shaped me up as a person today. I don’t know how much a success people see me as - that is very external aspect of one’s growth - but I think I’m a very successful person on a very personal level. And when you lose something or face failure, it’s about how you deal with it and not lose your self-respect and self-worth,” she said. “Ten years of humiliation, rejection, embarrassment could’ve made me believe what the whole world thought about me - like if they thought about me as a loser, but I didn’t think of myself as that or as what the world or my parents thought of me. That’s why I could do what I did in my life... Not just in India but all over the world, winning and success in so overrated,” she added. Kangana, who was aspiring to be a doctor before she decided to enter the film industry, says that right from schools, the system of success or ‘standing first in class’ is prominent. She also faced trauma due to her parents’ strange behavior if she didn’t stand first in class.”We need to tell our children that it is okay to fail, there’s nothing wrong in it. Nothing lasts forever. That kind of spirit needs to be there,” she said. Kangana also feels that this kind of prominence given to success and winning, creates a feeling where a rejection is hard for people to accept. She believes that’s the reason violence against women happen, having seen her sister Rangoli suffering an acid attack. “So rejection is so hard to deal with for anyone, especially men, there’s no acceptance for the fact that this women doesn’t want or that she doesn’t have feelings for me. Usually that is the intention and I feel that for 90 per cent of the violence against women - that kind of rejection triggers it.” Kangana also confessed about being physically abused by an industry celebrity and how she is fighting back physically and legally.

Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur says she has tried marijuana once in her life, but never thought of making it a daily habit. Asked whether she has tried cannabis or marijuana, Nimrat said in an interview for Culture Machine’s “UnBlushed” series: “It is something that I have tried, but it isn’t something that I do as a part of my regular life.” Nimrat, who came into limelight through her role in internationally acclaimed film “The Lunchbox” and played a pivotal character in US political thriller TV series “Homeland”, said coming into showbiz was a “weird thing” for her. “There is no one day that you wake up and you are like ‘I want to be an actor’. I was academically quite inclined, so wanting to be an actor was a very weird thing to admit, even to myself. “Because I don’t have anyone in my family who is an artist, just the vocabulary of being an actor didn’t exist,” Nimrat said. This apart, Nimrat also shared her thoughts on feminism and fitness. She said she doesn’t have a take on feminism “because I don’t think I understand the term very well”. “I haven’t thought about it. What I do believe in is equality. There are issues that do disturb me when I read about things like domestic violence, what women have to go through... That is very disturbing. What I can do at my level, I try doing,” said Nimrat, who is also not concerned with Bollywood’s obsession with thin actresses. In fact, she believes in being healthy and in being what she is. “It’s great to see yourself in different hair and make-up. Its great to see yourself in different outfits. And what’s bad about staying healthy as long as I am not killing myself over it?” “I am not obsessive about my dress size. I know my body is a certain way and I am comfortable with it. I am happy to repeat shoes, I am happy repeating outfits. It doesn’t matter,” she said. Nimrat will be next seen onscreen in “Airlift” alongside actor Akshay Kumar. Directed by Raja Krishna Menon, “Airlift”, which is based on the biggest evacuation of Indians based in Kuwait during the Iraq-Kuwait war, will release on January 22 next year. Leander Paes Leander Paes is a name more synonymous with Wimbeldon than with Bollywood. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee, Arjuna Award winner, Padma Shri recipient and Padma Bhushan laureate. That’s just a brief mention of the many accolades bestowed on Leander Paes. This Indian professional tennis player is considered one of the best doubles and mixed doubles players in the world. He won the mixed double at Wimbeldon and the US Open this year. Winner of nine mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, he’s the oldest player to have won such an honour. But there’s a movie buff hidden beneath his lean mean exterior. He says he gets his artistic inclination from his great maternal grandfather, the famous 19th century poet, Michael Madhusudan Dutt. His infatuation for the movies found expression when he made his acting debut in a political thriller Rajdhani Express (2013). He laments that the final product didn’t take shape as was promised. But he counts the film as a learning experience. “The production house and the handling of the movie are much more important than the movie itself. To be aware that so many lives are dependent on this one project gives you a great sense of responsibility. The journey was unique, tough and intriguing. I deeply respect the industry,” says the true blue sportsman who’s now working on a biopic to be made in Hollywood.
GUY’S GUY Being a sportsman, Leander knew that preparation is the key to winning and hence he roped in the services of Anupam Kher to teach him the basics of acting. “I was blown away after watching Anupam and Naseeruddin Shah perform in A Wednesday. I worked under Anupam in his acting class, An Actor Prepares. An entertainer is a wonderful human being and the interaction was rewarding.” He sought advice from perfectionist Aamir Khan too. “Aamir was kind. I met him over lunch when he was shooting for Ghajini. We meet over tennis or at functions and he drops by whenever he can. He’s a friendly soul.” He loved the way Aamir tackled real life issues in his TV show Satyameva Jayate and how he brought awareness about autism in Taare Zammen Par. Lagaan is his all-time favourite Aamir Khan film. He admires the way Aamir gets into the skin and shape of his characters. “The way he transformed his body in Ghajini was amazing.

He’s so creative and has lent such quality to his work,” he says of the septuagenarian. He’s amazed at Aamir’s virtuosity at tennis and badminton too. “Aamir’s a good tennis player and even better at badminton although he’s shy of falling at the net.” He plays soccer with his B-town buddies too. “I have fun playing football with Ranbir Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek captains our team. Abhishek, being Amitabh Bachchan’s son, had big shoes to fit in. He’s managed to create his own niche. Ranbir is a fine actor. What he did in Rockstar is phenomenal.”
Amitabh Bachchan inspires him both as an actor and a gentleman, “I’ve been a huge fan of Amitabh sir. Sholay is my favourite movie. I must have watched it more than a 100 times. Also Coolie, Amar Akhbar Anthony. Amitabh sir also has a mean left serve when he plays tennis,” he reveals. He’s impressed by the verve shown by our leading ladies too. “Kareena Kapoor played such a bold role in Chameli when she was so young. To watch Kangana Ranaut is interesting. Initially, Deepika Padukone took to her father, badminton champ Prakash Padukone’s sport and then chose to rise in showbiz. That’s no mean achievement. I enjoyed her in Love Aaj Kal.” The tennis star is a huge James Bond fan and considers Sean Connery as the original and the best Bond. He loves Roger Moore’s and Daniel Craig’s interpretations too. Another of his favourites is Johnny Depp who he says picks up quirky characters as in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, The Rum Diaries and made them his own. “My all-time favourite is the versatile, Leonardo Di Caprio. He’s reluctant to talk about his personal life, where he’s fighting a legal battle with ex-partner Rhea Pillai over alleged domestic abuse and custody of daughter Aiyana. “It’s stupidity. anveer Singh has crossed a momentous milestone in his career. Pulling out Bajirao from the annals of history and putting the Maratha Peshwa on 70 mm for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani (BM) was no less a battle for him. A battle he eventually won with guns blazing. The actor has left both critics and masses impressed by his take on the warrior’s life and times. What’s more, he bagged the trophy for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male) at the 61st Britannia Filmfare Awards. The tint of success fresh on his face, he’s finally stepped out of Bajirao’s skin to embrace the world of Yash Raj Films’ Befikre opposite Vaani Kapoor. “Befikre is a light, breezy romance,” he says adding, “After doing the intense Bajirao... this is just what the doctor prescribed.”
Indeed, Bajirao… was a trial by fire, given the stature of the character he had to impersonate. And he had 21 days to flesh it out he says. “I worked on my body language, my voice, my accent. I perfected my Marathi with my tutor Hrishikesh. He was constantly with me. Sanjay sir would add new lines at the last minute. So I couldn’t do without him.” It used to take Ranveer two and a half hours to get into the get-up of the Maratha warrior each time. “The scars, the eye make-up, the earrings and then layers and layers of the angarkha… took hours,” says he. “I requested the assistant directors not to call me Ranveer on the set. I asked them to call me ‘Rao’. I wanted to think, feel and act like Bajirao.” Working with SLB only emboldened him to explore himself as an actor. “Sanjay sir just throws you into the water and asks you to swim. He may turn a happy scene into a melancholic one and turn it on its head on the spur of the moment. You cannot possibly prepare because that is not his style. So, I learnt to be instinctive and spontaneous.”

Regarding her hair colour and style in the film, Katrina said that it was the director’s idea “with a symbolic connection”. ”This was an idea which Abhishek had. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star Freida Pinto, who has also featured in films like ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Immortals’, says working in a short film is “fascinating” as it allows you to tell a story in less time. “Short films are very fascinating because we don’t get the comfort of like two hours feature to tell the whole story and develop it. With the help of their friend Ahna (Freida), they seek to unite the world in anticipation of the Black Knight’s (voiced by Usher) revelation on Earth. Freida, who earlier worked with Oyelowo in ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, says it was interesting to work with the ‘Selma’ actor again. “The other interesting thing for me was getting back to the film set with David Oyelowo. He is such a phenomenal actor. Also Jabbar Raisani is a fantastic young director who is one to watch out for. The way he has put this film together is beyond phenomenal,” she said. Freida’s upcoming projects include ‘Jungle Book: Origins’ and ‘Yamasong: March of the Hollows’.
R. Madhavan: Nothing called sure shot success in Bollywood From playing a loverboy in ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’, engineering student in ‘3 Idiots’ to a gentleman in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ -- R. Madhavan has proven his range as an actor through varied roles in a career that has spanned almost two decades. He feels the idea of “sure shot success” in Bollywood doesn’t exist, and says that those who assume they understand the industry, start facing setbacks.
R. Madhavan “In 20 years, I got to know that there is nothing called sure shot success in films and Bollywood,” Madhavan told IANS here during the promotion of his new film ‘Saala Khadoos’. ‘Saala Khadoos’ is a sports film, featuring Madhavan as a strict coach who relentlessly pushes his protege -- played by Ritika Singh -- to overcome obstacles and achieve her boxing goals. This is not the first time Bollywood is coming up with a sports based film. ‘Lagaan’, ‘Chak De! India’, ‘Iqbal’, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and ‘Marry Kom’ had something to do with a sport, and found popularity among the audiences. However, the success of those films was not the reason why Madhavan wanted to bet on “Saala Khadoos”. “The moment you know that you understand the industry, you start facing setbacks. So, I never did this mistake. I never assume (anything) in my life, and I won’t do that for films too. I will insult my audience if I start doing this as I feel that viewers are very smart nowadays,” he added. Taking his past film “Jodi Breakers” as a reference point, the actor, who is admirable for his calm demeanour and downto-earth nature, said that he did the film with different hope, but “it didn’t work well at the box office”.
Madhavan has made his own mark in Bollywood and down South, but despite such a long career span, he still feels that he can’t be like “Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan”. “I am a limited actor. I can’t do a few things that most of the actors today do onscreen... for instance, six-pack abs, dancing and singing in the films... I can’t do that and I feel that I don’t entertain people in the right way sometimes on that front. “I choose my subject differently and I am blessed to get love and affection from people for such roles too... I think that’s a victory. I can’t become Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan and I don’t deserve to be like that. “For instance, if I am the local level champion, I can’t call myself world level champion. (But) yes, it is possible to achieve that in future in some form or the other,” he said. Through “Saala Khadoos”, he has tried to add another feather to his cap and that’s production. “I worked on my body in this film, and I also started producing too with this project. So, hopefully I will add more things in my profile in days to come,” added Madhavan. The film releases on Friday. February 2016 | Global Movie

Vivek Oberoi is enjoying the best of both the worlds – a phase where there’s much to be happy about. He’s turned dad second time round with the birth of daughter Ameyaa. At work too, he’s got a bunch of good films in his kitty. Admittedly, one quality worth admiring about Vivek Oberoi is his consistency as an actor. No matter what, as an actor he never lets you down. Right now he’s banking on Yash Raj Films’ crime comedy Bank Chor, where he’ll be playing a CBI officer. The film directed by Bumpy has him paired opposite Riteish Deshmukh. Then there is Indra Kumar’s Great Grand Masti, ‘a naughty but family comedy’ as he puts it. Another genre he has always impressed in is the gangsta’ chronicle. And predictably there’s Sanjay Gupta’s Mumbai Saga coming up. There’s also a buzz about Company 2 being in the pipeline. But the actor is reluctant to elaborate on that. “I wouldn’t like to talk about it. Things spoil once you talk about them prematurely. Earlier I’d reveal my plans,” says the actor who had made an impressive debut as an underworld stooge in Ram Gopal Varma’s Company in 2002. He followed it by playing lover boy turned distraught husband in Shaad Ali’s Saathiya the same year. Touted as the hottest find that year, a few wrong films and a few wrong moves put Vivek in a slump. But the actor went through much introspection and since then has only impressed in the selective roles he’s played down the decade.
says he about his uninhibited act in Grand Masti.” He confides it’s frustrating waiting for good roles to come his way but doesn’t believe in playing the blame game either. “When an actor does not get good films, he or she usually accepts any film offered to him. You should have the courage to say no even to a good director or a good banner if the role is not good,” he says. “Even though Grand Masti earned 150 crores and Krrish earned 250 crores, I sat at home for a year because I was not offered any good scripts. I spent time with my kids. I read books. I don’t need money to run my kitchen. I can wait for an interesting film to come my way,” he states.
He welcomes the new trends in cinema, which hinge on content. “Cinema has changed tremendously. It’s heartening to see small films like Queen and Pyar Ka Punchnama 2 doing a business of 70 crores. My films Company and Sathiya did well but they did not get these kind of box-office numbers.” The actor has always insisted that there’s life beyond the movies and his involvement with his family proves the same. He’s enjoying playing the family man to the hilt more so after the birth of his son Vivaan and daughter Ameyaa. “Something was missing; there was a vacuum in my life before my wife Priyanka came along. The industry is chaotic. Priyanka entered my life like a soft tune and brought in stability. I am a romantic, an emotional and a family-oriented person. As an actor he now wants to tread uncharted territory. Relationships come first for me, achievements and “It was difficult for me to do slapstick comedy. I had awards come later. Love and respect count more than to learn the art of making a fool of myself in front of fame and money. the camera. I surprised everyone and even myself,”

A person’s home is the basis of his life,” he asserts adding, “A star’s life is lonely, even after being successful. I value the sound sleep after coming home. In the long run, we do not work for ourselves but for our family.” He claims being a father to a son and a daughter are different things. “When Vivaan was born I felt a friend had arrived. When Ameyaa was born, I believed our home was blessed. The first thing I do on waking up is see my daughter’s face. When I was young, I believed that dad (Suresh Oberoi) was partial to my sister Meghana. But now I understand how special is father-daughter bond.”
He says he will be a supportive father. “In Lalit Shastra, Ameyaa is Maa Durga’s name. In Sanksrit, it means ‘limitless’. If she wants to soar high like a bird, I will be the wind beneath her wings. We Punjabis believe if the values are correct, you don’t have to exercise much control over our children.” He says he’s an easygoing father and the kids don’t take him seriously. “I enjoy giving them a bath, taking them out for drives, to the beach, playing games with them… I read them bedtime stories too. Priyanka, on the other hand, disciplines them. If I scold Vivaan, he believes I’m playing with him.” He chuckles as he relates, “I cry when I watch animation movies. When Vivaan and I were watching The Lion King and Finding Nemo, we both started crying with excitement. Priyanka couldn’t stop laughing.”
He’s glad to have found a partner who doesn’t belong to the industry. “I first met Priyanka in a restaurant in Florence (Italy). I saw a simple girl wearing flats, linen pants and a blouse with her hair loosely tied. She wore no make-up and had a casual attitude. She was unaware of the fact that she would be meeting an actor. I asked her why she was dressed so simply and she said she did not like being showy. I found this quality endearing. I’ve seen the glamorous world and masked faces. I valued her simplicity.”
The couple shares yet another passion – social service. “We work for little girls; we rescue children from child prostitution and child labour. We’ve even started a school for these children. Other than that we enjoy travelling, going on treks, attending music festivals… We recently attended a Sufi festival in Rajasthan.” The ups and down in mercurial showbiz have surely given him valuable insights about the demons of success and failure. “Filmstars live in a glass palace. They believe they can see the world but they don’t realise that the world can also see them. So keep your feet firmly planted on earth,” he cautions. He’s wary of artifice as well. “Acting should be done only in front of the camera and not in real life. I don’t wear a mask in real life. With me, what you see is what you get.” Any words of wisdom for newcomers? “Never let the hunger for acting die. Don’t get distracted. Never lose your originality, the purpose for which you came here. Actors tend to forget why they entered the industry and let others choose the direction for them. Set your life’s course by yourself.” Maintaining a sense of equilibrium is the most important skill in this journey he reveals, “Do not panic in your bad times and don’t get overexcited during the good ones.” The attitude of gratitude is what he lives by. “True happiness only comes when you do good for others.” February 2016 | Global Movie
Michael Jackson’s video Thriller changed my life Hotshot choreographer turned filmmaker Remo D’Souza shares his dreams with us

Recently, he had two big releases in-progress. The script is being written. The cast isn’t finalised - Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao yet. We’re also considering Sooraj Pancholi. It’s going to be an Mastani. People associate him mostly with hip hop but that action-packed dance movie.” Remo is also kicked about A Flying changed post Bajirao Mastani. “The first song I choreographed Jatt. “It’s a superhero fantasy. There’s Tiger and Jacqueline, so in Bajirao Mastani was Pinga, a Marathi folk dance with both there’s a lot of dance. There’s also flying and action too!” he Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. It was shot for 10 laughs. “We’ve had few superhero movies… Krrish and RA.One. nights. I realised that Sanjay lives, eats and breathes films. The other song was with Deepika, called Deewani is just the opposite. “Jacky is a lot of fun. Tiger likes to keep quiet Mastani. Theirs is a superb this set,” he says. combination because my script also underlines that contrast - the girl is perky and the boy is calm,” he says. For Dilwale though, the choreography was fun. “I choreographed the song Man Ma Emotion Jaagey Re with Varun Dhawan and His recently concluded dance show Dance Plus on Star Plus, also Kriti Sanon. I was also supposed to choreograph the Shah Rukh earned Remo rave reviews. “I started off with Dance India Dance Khan and Kajol song in Iceland (Gerua was later choreographed (DID) but Zee didn’t call me after the third season. So I got into by Farah Khan). I couldn’t because I got busy with A Flying Jatt,” Jhalak Dikhla Jaa with co-judges Madhuri Dixit and Karan Johar. he says adding, “Both films are great! Dilwale is an out and out That was the best panel - three correct people judging a reality Rohit Shetty film. It’s fun and huge. Bajirao on the other hand, show. When I heard that Madhuri wasn’t doing Jhalak and even is an experience. I always wanted to work with Sanjay Leela Karan was leaving midway, I realised it wouldn’t be the same. I Bhansali. His working style and mine is different. I do everything left Jhalak and started my own show.” He says dance shows have fast because I believe that energy comes from the momentum. But become like a circus where you ask a contestant to show various he takes long to set up one shot. For him everything needs to be forms, rather than concentrating on his area of expertise. “But in perfect. Every small detail needs to be in place.” From directing Dance Plus you’re supposed to do what you excel in. After judging F.A.L.T.U to ABCD 2, Remo is learning the best from the world so many dance reality shows and making two movies on dance, aound him. I believed I’d experienced enough. But after seeing the talent in Dance Plus, I’ve realised this is the beginning,” he shares.
Remo D’Souza is on a high. Sitting in his plush office, dressed in a track pant and tee-shirt, the dancing genius is soaking in the praise that his choreography in both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani has won him. Moreover, his recent directorial Any Body Can Dance 2 (ABCD2) was a huge success as well. “Honestly, I don’t react when people tell me I’ve become a 100 crore director. My aim was just to make a good film. I didn’t want people to say, ‘paise toh kama liye par film bakwas hai’,” says the director whose movie raked in 104.5 crores.
