Sonam Kapoor’s fitness routine for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is leaving us speechless
7
November 2015
Sonam Kapoor’s personal trainer, tells us the diet she has put the actress on, and what keeps the Sonam so fit. The toned actress is ready to break the screen with her more-than-fit avatar. Whether it was her spot-on Cannes appearances or the much-recent ramp walks, Ms ‘Fashion’am Kapoor has left no stone unturned to look her svelte best. The actress is in her best shape ever, thanks to her moderate eating and switching to different workouts (that too religiously) with personal trainer Radhika Karle. Gearing up for her next big release with Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo, Sonam has not only worked out hard in the gym but also snacked on the right foods at the right time. The actress, who was shooting in extremely hot weather in Karjat (Rajasthan) kept herself hydrated throughout the day as well to look her best. “She had to play the role of a princess in the film, wearing heavy costumes and accessories which would put strain on her neck and back. I made Sonam do regular stretching and made sure she took lots of coldpress juices, coconut water and water to beat the heat. She is very dedicated and does not want to give in to excuses and is actually working on her body like never before,” how the fashionista is keeping up with her fitness and food goals . Q. With back-to-back shoots and a packed schedule, what kind of workouts are you giving Sonam? A. Ever since the beginning of the year, Sonam has been out and busy but she makes sure she squeezes in an hour for her workouts every day. Currently, I’m making her do a mix of cardio, Pilates and Kick-boxing, coupled with functional training. We carry a Pilates reformer when we are travelling, so it cuts down the hassle. Sonam also loves to swim, so whenever she gets time she just goes for a swim. Q. What is her strength in terms of a workout? A. She is great with her upper body workouts and her favourite exercises include the chest-press and lateral pull-down. We are also trying to strengthen her glute muscles along with getting a solid core. In Neerja, another project of hers, she is playing an air-hostess and for that, she needs to maintain a lean body to look the part. It is a lot more fast and furious, so we are paying attention to mental focus and ways to hoard up on loads of energy. Q. Have you altered her diet lately? A. Let me tell you, Sonam loves to visit grocery stores whenever she has some time on hand, and she actually checks stuff before blatantly buying it. So, yes diet is something we always play with in order to break the monotony. For now, I’ve given her a high- protein and

Sonam Kapoor: It was intimidating to be on sets with Salman
Sonam Kapoor has shared screen space with Salman Khan in her debut film Saawariya, but the actress says she was intimidated to romance the superstar in Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. “I feel privileged to be a part of the film. I have been a huge fan of Salman Khan for a long time. I was a bit nervous ... It was intimidating for me to be on the sets but I was excited as well.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo: Lesser known facts
“After a few days I got comfortable as Sooraj sir gave me lot of love. I cherish it. I had an amazing experience,” Sonam told reporters during the launch of first trailer of the film. Recalling her first meeting with the Bajrangi Bhaijaan star Sonam, 30, said the 49-year-old actor was generous enough to sit and talk to her. “I was 14 when my dad (Anil Kapoor) and Salman were working together in a film. I was never allowed on a film set but for this movie I requested my dad to take me there. Salman sat with me for an hour and I think I would have traumatised him,” she said. The Raanjhanaa actress, who will be seen donning a traditional look in the film, says working with Barjatya was a great experience. “Nobody loses temper on Sooraj Barjatya’s film set. I have worked with him in an advert and he is completely different. We all worked hard and it was a great experience,” she said. Also starring Swara Bhaskar, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Deepak Dobriyal and Armaan Kohli of Bigg Boss fame, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will hit the theatres on November 12. low-carb diet and she eats mini-meals every two hours. dietician Rujuta Diwekar is up for some real diet talk Sonam’s diet mostly incorporates the following: Pre-morning workout meal: Half a cup of Greek yoghurt with berries Breakfast: Eggs/Upma/Poha Pre-lunch snack: Grilled sandwich with coconut water Lunch: Half a cup of cooked lentils with salad Post-lunch snack: Fruits and nuts/Green tea Late-evening snack: Bhel/Hummus with veggies/Sprout salad Dinner: Half a cup of boiled rice with chicken/Veggies and soup Q. Any particular cuisine/dish she is fond of? A. Sonam likes sushi, specially sashimi. She is fond of
avocados and also likes to indulge in French food. Q. What form of workout do you intend to attempt with her next?
A. Sonam absolutely loves the mountains and skiing is definitely on her mind. It’s going to be a physically exhilarating workout and she is more than ready for it
Sonam Kapoor : Fashion is an art
Actress Sonam Kapoor, who is known for being one of the most stylist celebrities in Bollywood, says fashion is an art. “I feel it (fashion) is an expression of individuality and I think fashion is an art. I feel sometimes when you wear clothes, it’s not only about looking nice, it also makes you look beautiful,” The actress says being in the showbiz, constant styling

takes a toll on her hair and skin. “Using the right product is important. I have also been very conscious about taking care of my skin and hair. Besides right kind of hair and skin products, having a great diet and hydration are important,” When it comes to hairstyles, Sonam is experimental. “I am really experimental, so I do a lot of things. I like my natural hair which is really straight,” she said.
Salman Khan I ask if he’s ready for the interview and his manager cuts in, “Give him two minutes, please”. Salman smiles and quips, “You think I will feel okay in two minutes? Come on, let’s do this.” Munching on protein cookies and fruits on the side (and repeatedly insisting that I have some of it), he gets talking about movies, controversies, stress and plans for his 50th birthday this December. Excerpts from the interview: Q. How’s your health? A. Good, but since I am training for ‘Sultan’, it’s getting a bit painful. The prep-up involves a lot of physical exertion, so something or the other keeps hurting everyday. But I am enjoying it all. Don’t worry, I won’t let my fans down. Q. You have teamed up with Sooraj Barjatya after a decade and half for ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’. What can the audience expect from this collaboration? A. I value my association with Sooraj; the kind of films we have done has earned us a lot of respect. Yes, we hadn’t worked for a long time and now we doing a film, which in my eyes and mind, is better than the three movies we did earlier — ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (1989), ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!’ (1994) and ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’ (1999). Sooraj’s movies are not preachy; there is a nice feeling to them. When you come out of the theatre, you will be glowing because you imbibe all the niceness. It’s also one of the biggest budget films that I have done so far. Q. To what extent are you involved in the marketing process? Why did you choose Diwali for the release? A. Sooraj wanted a Diwali release. He planned this film three years ago, but then I got busy with other projects. Q. Did you also take time to agree to do the film? A. I knew he was writing the script. When he was done with it, we sat down for a narration. There was no way that I could say no to him. Q. Will you collaborate with him again in the near future? A. Of course, there will be more collaborations. Q. You were juggling the shoot of PRDP and your last outing, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ earlier this year. Court hearings related to your 2002 hit-and-run case were also going on at the same time. What was your frame of mind? How tough was it concentrate on work? A. It was very difficult. I had to block everything

out and give my 100 per cent to my work. When a fan pays to watch my film, I have to ensure that he/ she enjoys it. I can’t do a half-hearted job and say that ‘guys, I was going through sh*t’; they won’t care. I mean, they do care, but when they go to see a film, they want to enjoy. Concentrating on work when all those things were happening around was really difficult. Q. What sort of role do you personally prefer playing on screen: family guy ‘Prem’ or ‘Dabangg’ style action hero? A. Depends on the script. Like in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, my character could have easily beaten up people and done a lot of stunts, but given the story, he was the one who had to get bashed and bruised to help Munni reach home safely. You have to forget about your image if you want to do an honest job. Interview: Between alcohol and women, I have quit alcohol, says Salman Khan Q. The ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ story turned real with a Pakistani activist helping Indian girl Geeta return home 15 years after she strayed across the border. Do you plan to meet her? A. I don’t think so. I work closely with an NGO which tracks missing children or those in remand homes in India and helps them reunite with their families. We recently sent 30 kids back home. When the first lot was being sent, I went to meet them. So, every time the kids were going home, they expected me to see them off. Besides, two or three of them ran away from home to meet me in Mumbai, so I had to stop going to them. As far as Geeta is concerned, she wanted to meet her biological parents and I am happy at their reunion. The family that she was staying with in Pakistan took great care of her. I hope her real parents take as much care of her. Lot of Indian kids have disappeared and people have exploited them, trafficked them and did what not! Geeta was fortunate to have not gone through any of that. Q. You will turn 50 on December 27. How do you plan to bring in your big day? A. I don’t think turning 50 is a big deal and so, I have no plans for any celebrations. In fact, we have to work harder for our fans to have a memorable time at the movies. The pain this side is directly proportional to the enjoyment on the other side. And if you endure the pain on the sets, your fans will strive to take their lives a notch higher and be better human beings.

Bajirao Mastani: It’s a wrap on my most incredible film experience, says Deepika Padukone It is for the second time that Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika have collaborated for a film and the Piku actor calls its the “most incredible film experience.” Deepika Padukone, who will be playing Mastani in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Bajirao Mastani, has wrapped up the shooting of her forthcoming period drama. It is for the second time that Sanjay and Deepika have collaborated for a film and the Piku actor calls its the “most incredible film experience.” The 29-year-old actor took to Twitter to announce the wrap. She will romance her rumoured boyfriend Ranveer Singh in the film. Apart from the them, Bajirao Mastani also stars Priyanka Chopra. Deepika had earlier mentioned that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial has been the toughest film of her career. She called the film, “emotionally, physically and mentally draining.” Bajirao Mastani narrates the love story of 18th century Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I (played by Ranveer Singh) and his second wife Mastani (Deepika). Priyanka Chopra plays Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai. The film is scheduled to release on December 18

Abhishek Bachchan: I don’t believe in Karva Chauth
Abhishek Bachchan Abhishek, who was present at the opening ceremony of the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in Mumbai on Thursday said he wouldn’t be able to watch any films at the gala because he was going to fly with Aishwarya abroad for Karva Chauth, which is observed by women for their husband’s long life and well being. “I don’t believe in it, but if my wife is doing something for my health, then it is my duty to be with her. That’s why I will be flying with my wife,” he said. The doting husband also praised Aishwarya’s comeback film ‘Jazbaa’. The couple, who have been married for eight years now, have a daughter named Aaradhya. Abhishek said he would spend the forthcoming Diwali festival with his little bundle of joy. “I will be celebrating Diwali playing with my daughter. We will perform puja at home and light traditional diyas,” he said.

f there’s one actor who has the knack of reinventing himself, it’s Anil Kapoor. While every Bolly star worth his name is embracing TV to make big bucks by hosting shows, Anil decided to make his debut on TV with a fiction show 24, which he is also producing. An adaptation of the hit international show by the same name, the desi version is touted as the game-changer even if it did not appeal as much to the masses. Anil terms it as a niche show and is rearing to get back with the second season. What’s more, the actor’s last two releases Dil Dhadakne Do and Welcome Back had him in completely diverse roles and he shone in both. His suave, stylish outing as father to Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh stole the show in DDD, while his terrific comic timing in WB grabbed attention. Here the actor talks about his TV show and the possibility of a film with beti Sonam. You’ve been saying that you want to make the second season of 24 bigger and better… Yes, it’s not just a question of bigger and better. What we are trying to do is take feedback about the first season from people and the critics to incorporate it in the second one. But it will remain a niche show, right? Yes. Basically, it’s like what happened in films. I remember when Mr India happened, it was considered niche, especially since it released along with Nagina. People said Nagina would be more successful than Mr India. For that matter, even Parinda and Dil Chahta Hai were considered niche. But aaj hamari pehchan un filmon se hai. Earlier directors, who had a different vision and spoke English were forced to change their thinking and make the same kind of films that were being churned out and now, it’s the other way round. If directors are not willing to broaden their horizons (Hindi aati hai, English nahi) then, it won’t do. That will happen on TV, too. 24 is the just the beginning, but it is also a game-changer. I am not saying it is original (it’s obviously an adaptation and the credit goes to the creators), but the way we are making it, the production scale — that should be of international standard. In fact, I met the makers of the original show recently and they said they loved the way we had made it. The sad thing here is that most people, especially from the film fraternity look at TV to earn money than doing some good work. For me, it’s the other way round. I do films for money and TV to do something I am passionate about. We are trying to raise the bar. Yes, it is a multiplex show, but today a multiplex has more respect than a single theatre! Is it true that Akshaye Khanna and Tabu will be part of the show? I don’t want to talk about the cast right now because everything should be confirmed and contracts have to be signed. We have several choices for every role. Every actor has to understand the intent of the show. He/she should have passion and commitment for the show and not do it as a favour. Outsiders with a different intent and thinking will

not be considered. You have several actors in your family. Haven’t you considered casting your brother Sanjay for any role? I did, but no role suits him. It is not about casting your brother, uncle or aunt, the role should be good. Jabardasti, you can’t cast anyone. Sometimes the role may be good, but he/she should suit the character. You are also adapting Modern Family. Will you be playing the main role? Right now, we are working on the script. When you adapt you have to crack the right way to do it keeping the purity and soul of the show intact. Getting the right people to play the characters is pivotal. Sonam has already rejected it, but I am ready to play any role. I am a beggar for good roles. I have no qualms approaching a filmmaker for a role, if it is powerful. You played a father for the first time to Gen Next actors in Dil Dhadakne Do… (Cuts in) They (Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh) played my children. Instead of asking me the clichéd question of playing a father, I would rather you ask me what kind of research I did to play the character of Kamal Mehra. I have played a father and grandfather in Eeshwar. In 24, I play a father to a grown-up child. If the role is good, I will even play the grandfather. All international stars like Brad Pitt are doing such roles. I am not deluded — I have to play my age, so why not? So, any film with Sonam in the pipeline? Sonam ke saath, it depends. Some people are already scripting something, there’s a possibility. The only thing is we both have to be excited about the roles. If mine is good and not hers, she won’t do it and vice versa. Is the hero of Battle For Bittora finalised? Not yet. There were reports of Fawad Khan being finalised and later he opting out. They were all rumours. I don’t like these speculations because the project gets spoiled. We are still working on the film. Everything has to fall into the right place. Some people take the opportunity to announce it either for money or just for the heck of it and some people try to build their brand by talking about being approached and turning it down. You have grown a beard for your character in the show. Will you be doing films simultaneously or after the show is over? I am completely focussed on my show, so films will happen only after this. Also, though I have sported a beard in some of my films, this is the first time I have grown a real beard. It represents what the character is going through in his life. I haven’s signed any film as yet, but I am in talks for a couple of them

Athiya Shetty: I like people being a little hard on me, who pinpoint my flaws and help me improve

November 2015
Athiya Shetty is not one to shy away from criticism… Her debut now behind her, ask Athiya Shetty about her next move and you sense there isn’t any confusion in her mind. She wants to do a romantic film next. She discusses her future plans and explains why she wants to stick to doing romantic films. At least for now.
don’t want to do a typical love saga but right now, more than a thriller or an intense drama, I feel I will enjoy doing a romantic film more.
If you look back, there’s always over a year-long gap between the first and second film of all Gen-Y stars. Should we expect the same from you? It might be the same for me as well. I think a second film is more important because you get to prove yourself a lot more in your second film. I feel your first film always chooses you but your second film is something you have to choose, so there’s a bigger responsibility on that front. The second film is more important because it eventually determines whether you are here to stay or are just a one-film wonder.
Are most of them romance sagas? Yes, they are all in the space of being a trueblue romantic film. I haven’t got any offer that’s tragic or intense now.
What film would you do next? A romantic film or in the romantic space, for sure. Don’t you feel that after a point, it might get you typecast? No, I don’t think it will happen because if you look at films, every film has romance in it. What makes them distinctively different from each other is what type of romance it is. There’s an Aashiqui 2 and there’s Hero, which also has action. Since there are so many types of romantic films, in terms of their treatment, I don’t fear being typecast as a romantic heroine. These are the type of films that I’ve enjoyed watching and I’ve grown up watching. I love and enjoy watching romantic films so right now, I want to stick in that space and do love stories with great music, which teenagers would love to watch. I want to do those films right now. You are a 90s kid and that was the era of mushy romances. Does that also have an effect on the particular choices you are making? Absolutely! The first film I ever watched in a theatre was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. And I love romantic films. I love Dil To Pagal Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho and I loved Aashiqui 2 as well. I think Shraddha and Aditya were so beautiful in that film. Maybe that’s why in my head, I want to do a romantic film. But it cannot be just another romantic film. It needs to have a great story and depth to it. I

Aashiqui 2 was a tragic film. Are you game for a tragedy too at the moment? Of course! Why not be a part of something you would enjoy watching as well.
For your second film, is the banner important or will you be comfortable doing a film with a debutant director-producer? Right now, my main focus is the director. No matter who it is — debutant or senior. I need to feel that I can trust my director to help me move on as an artist. They help me better myself. I am a complete director’s actor and I need to have that connect with him — to be able to ask him a lot of questions because I am never satisfied with my work. For me, my co-star doesn’t matter and neither does the banner. Who do you usually discuss your films and projects with? Honestly, I speak to my dad and I speak to Reshma Shetty, my manager because I think they are extremely realistic when it comes to me. They are not biased in any way and I like that. I like people being a little hard on me, who pinpoint my flaws and help me improve. How much do you believe in the institution of love and romance? For me, when I think of pure love, I think of my parents and both sets of my grandparents because they are the living example of true love in my house. My parents have been together 30 years now and they still have the same love and respect for each other. That trust factor is always there. So, for me, love is about being friends and also having the trust. What kind of person would you fall in love with? He has to be extremely honest and somebody who can make me laugh and be my best friend as well. That’s really important. You need to be friends with that person, you need to want to spend time with that person. For me, trust is most important, so I need to be able to trust the person blindly
Krishna Shroff on her topless pictures: If I was just some girl who uploaded a picture like this on my Instagram page, nobody would see it Krishna suggests that her pictures received attention, because she hails form a filmy family. She also talks about her family’s reaction and her non- Bollywood aspirations. Read on! Not too long ago, she hit the headlines for posting “topless” pictures of herself on Instagram. While you might think that like most star kids and her own brother Tiger Shroff, she may be waiting for that big Bollywood debut, Krishna tells us that it is most certainly not on the cards. In a tell-all interview, she talks to us about the infamous photoshoot, her famous brother and more. What was the idea behind doing a “topless” photoshoot? Honestly, there was no idea behind it. My best friend Divina Rikhye is a photographer and many a times, she just picks up the camera and we experiment. She is the only one I’m comfortable with. So one day, I was in bed and she said I want to click you like this. So a few weeks later, we tried it out. Her kind of photography is very different, she is very artistic in
18

her approach, she studied photography in New York. I really like her style as opposed to the usual studio setting or overly photoshopped. This was just more natural and it was very aesthetically done. I love having beautiful pictures to put up on my Instagram. I don’t see anything wrong with being able to express myself on my own page. I wasn’t expecting people to go on my account and pick up all these pictures and then release them on like every website possible, I wasn’t expecting that at all. How many pictures did you take before uploading the final one on your Instagram? We shot it in my bedroom. It was just me, her and a friend of ours who usually assists her. It was super simple. I do my own hair and make-up, she just shoots! She doesn’t even really have to direct me; her only instruction for me is “Be yourself” and do it as naturally as possible. We did quite a few shots. My friend took around 300 pictures and then we chose the best one from that. What were your mom, dad and Tiger’s reactions to the pictures? I showed mom the pictures before I uploaded them on Instagram, not to get her approval or anything but just because I share all my photos with her and she loved it! She thought it was beautifully done and she thought I looked really pretty. I showed Tiger all the shots, he loved it as well. He wanted to upload one of them. So he actually uploaded one from the series before I did on his Instagram. And my dad, you guys know he’s super bindaas, he gives my brother and me our freedom. He trusts us to do what we want as long as we don’t cross any limit. We never want to break their trust because of the amount of freedom they’ve given us. How do you deal with all the creeps on your Instagram? Honestly, it was really surprising because from like 7,000 followers on Instagram, I now have like close to a hundred thousand followers, it’s pretty crazy. There were definitely some creepy comments. Otherwise, everyone was
19
November 2015
being surprisingly nice and supportive because I would have thought that a lot of people today are pretty close-minded and judgemental when it comes to such things. But I didn’t receive any negativity. According to you, how does being a celebrity change the equation given that women in showbiz are all the more exposed to objectification and letching? I am not a celebrity but being from the family of one (my father being well-known and now my brother too), it definitely changes the equation. If I was just some girl who uploaded a picture like this on my Instagram page, nobody would see it. I feel like people are really interested in me (laughs) and I am okay with that, I am not complaining. What was the nastiest comment you read on your pictures? Nothing nasty, probably just a few aunties here and there sharing their opinion and saying “Oh beta don’t do this! You know it’s not good!” like that’s the usual. The only thing I really had a problem with was the fact that people have used the word “topless” because, and I have said this before, being topless means you have to show nipple. The word just wasn’t right for the picture. Are you a follower of the Kardashian sisters? I wouldn’t say that I am a fan. It’s not like they are my role models or I look up to them. I wouldn’t even compare what I did with the Kardashians. What they do and the way it’s carried out is very different. Which pages do you follow on Instagram? I love Best Vacation which basically shows you all the beautiful places around the world that you should see. I also like Fitness Food Motivation. I love looking at different healthy recipes that you can make at home, different kinds of workouts… More about the food though (laughs). I don’t follow any celebrities. I follow 90 people on Instagram and all of them are people with whom I’ve either worked in the past or my school friends. When a celebrity like Miley Cyrus puts up a topless or a racy picture on social media more often than not people see it as attention-seeking behaviour. Nudity in films is either shunned or frowned upon in Indian cinema. How do you respond to such judgement? I can’t really speak for everyone but for myself I understand that that is the situation today in our country but I am a very free soul so I don’t really let it affect me. In my opinion, there is a very fine line between good taste and bad taste, if you know what I mean. Something could be pulled off well, artistically done whereas something else comes across as vulgar. So yeah there is a very fine line but if you stay within
20
November 2015
that line… Go for it. I am all for it. If someone were to come up to you and make a personal attack saying that you are “going against the Indian culture” and or “acting indecently,” how would you deal with it? You can’t change everyone’s opinion. There is always going to be some kind of judgement in the world no matter what you do. I am just a strong believer of letting people live their lives. That’s how my parents have raised me. Why should people be afraid of feeling good about them? And more than that just leave them alone, let them live their lives. They are doing something or making something for themselves so people should start minding their own business and live their own life. If some random person just came up to me and said that, I would ignore it but if I had to say something I would just explain my intention and make them understand that there is a fine line and I don’t think I crossed it in any way. Are you making a Bollywood debut any time soon? I am not going to be making a Bollywood debut. I just recently produced a feature-length documentary and I think that was it for me. I am not really as passionate about films as I used to be. I’ve actually taken a whole different direction. I am into sports and athletics right now so I am actually coaching high school girls and boys basketball teams at the moment. I love it because it’s my passion, it makes me happy and I feel healthy and fit doing it. Does Tiger have something to do with it? (Laughs) No! While we were in school both of us played on every sports team. I was the varsity captain of my volleyball, football and basketball team. I have loved sports ever since the fifth grade. Unfortunately, there is not enough scope for sports in India. If there was, I would have been in this field a long time ago. What would you like to tell girls out there who struggle with body image issues and society’s notion of what they should look and act like? I just want girls to understand that the whole “glamorous” life is all great and everything but it’s hard work. If that doesn’t work out for some people there are always other things to do. Like the glamour world, acting, modelling shouldn’t be the end of the world. There are lots of other options out there. Every woman should have the right to feel beautiful and do whatever makes them feel beautiful. It doesn’t necessarily have to have a motive behind it. I feel every woman should have the right to do exactly what they want, what makes them happy and what makes them feel good.
Neha Dhupia: Modelling is not a brainless profession Neha Dhupia talks about how to make it big in the modelling industry… Model-turned-actress Neha Dhupia, who also represented India at the Miss Universe pageant in 2002, says modelling is not a brainless profession but a job that needs lot of “hard work”. Neha is anchoring the Kingfisher Supermodels 3show where she is also mentoring 10 supermodels who can be seen battling it out through 20 episodes of tasks and challenges on a show aired on NDTV Good Times. Controvcerting the people’s common perception about models, Neha said that modelling is a “hardworking” job with models, who are also practicing dentists, lawyers and have corporate jobs. “It is a myth that modelling is a brainless profession. We have girls here who are dentists, lawyers, girls who are doing corporate jobs and working in tech companies. It is a lot of hard work, long hours and everyday you have a new boss,” Neha told a news portal in an interview. “It is not a great place to be but having said that, there is a lot of adulation. If you are good at what you do, it is a great place to be. It is competitive, cut-throat like everything else. Get into it only if you are fully ready,” said the Singh Is Kinng actress. Advising that modelling is about working on your positive traits and concealing the negatives, Neha said that imperfections are beautiful and it’s about owning yourself. “If you want to get into modelling, be professional, work on your positives, conceal your negatives and keep at it. Don’t come with pre-conceived notions. Imperfections are beautiful,” she said. “Even if you think that you cannot be model because there is something wrong…just get into it. You have models in New York who have taken the modelling industry by storm, there is a girl who has discoloured skin patches but still she is everywhere! It is about owning yourself,” she said.

Govinda: I will never work with David Dhawan! Now isn’t that shocking especially since the filmmaker has given the actor the biggest hits of his career? Govinda made a comeback to films last year with two back-to-back releases Kill Dil and Happy Ending. He played the antagonist in Kill Dil and a superstar in Happy Ending. However, the films did not fare well at the box office. Here the actor talks about what went wrong with the movies and his next outing… Is it true that you are making your Marathi film debut? Yes, I am doing a Marathi film, but the makers have to announce it first. Also, the project has been stuck for three months as they are sorting out some things. I will talk about it once it’s ready. Both your comeback films Kill Dil and Happy Ending did not fare well at the box-office. What went wrong? These days, heroes release their films during the holidays or the festive period. That way they get more shows in a theatre. I was making a comeback after fourfive years. And two films of mine released almost together. Those who wanted to watch a comedy, went to see Happy Ending and others saw Kill Dil. The audience got divided. Also, women, I feel, are not interested in films like Kill Dil. Another reason for their tepid business is they got released towards the end of the year. If they had hit theatres mid2014, they would have worked better as it was the holiday season. Moreover, Kill Dill and Happy Ending are not my kind of titles — Coolie No.1, Raja Babu, Dulhe Raja are more my type (laughs). But you were appreciated in both your films… Yes, and that was a big surprise! Why is that? I thought because I was returning to films after a gap of five years, my fan following must have reduced. People would think, ‘After so many years what’s the need for Govinda to do these films?’ But whenever I appeared on screen, the audience clapped and that was heartening. In Happy Ending for instance I was apprehensive about how people will react to me dancing with Ileana (D’cruz) but they liked it. Also, my mother is no more and I do what I feel is right. It was fate that I didn’t have a film for five years. I wasn’t getting the roles that I wanted to, but finally my wife and daughter said I have to work. That’s when Kill Dil and Happy Ending came my way and I did them. They were not wrong decisions. As I said, people liked me in the films. Sometimes, if you come after a gap it works provided you work on yourself. What next? My home production Abhinay Chakra is ready and will release in January. Hasn’t that been delayed?

Yes, but it’s okay. It’s just two years since I announced the film and it’s ready now. Your daughter Tina’s debut film Second Hand Husband didn’t do well… (Cuts in) The film was completely her choice and she has acted well. Somewhere luck factor counts in the film line. Sometimes our relationships come into play or the presentation is not right — like my two films which released around the same time. It was not wrong on the part of the makers because their money was invested in it, but the timing wasn’t right. The same thing happened with Tina, though she was appreciated. Sometimes a good story and screenplay also doesn’t work. That’s not in anybody’s hands. When Sadma released Kamal Haasan and Sridevi, both were appreciated. Even the director won acclaim, but the film didn’t do well. People went to the extent of saying Kamal Haasan shouldn’t have done another film after Ek Duje Ke Liye! Will you produce a film for Tina? It is in my mind, but first let Abhinay Chakra release. When I decided to make this film, I didn’t get support from financiers. Sometimes, when we actors are making a comeback, we don’t get support, but that’s fine. I have completed the film and I hope it becomes a hit when it releases. I can say I did it on my own strength. It was the same at the beginning of my career too — whatever I got was on my own strength — my producers then weren’t big. Your son Yashvardhan looks ready to step into Bollywood. Is he planning to? Yes, he has just done his acting and filmmaking course from London. He is trying to get into films. I did whatever I got, for me it was kaam mila, ishwar mila — maine screenplay kidhar jaa raha hai, story kya hai, kabhi dekha nahi — but my son won’t do that. He understands cinema. Salman Khan recently launched Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty. Are you looking at any of your industry colleagues to do the same for your son? I don’t look at my friends for that. Then they feel they have made your life or that you are dependent on them. I don’t even want people to ask me these questions. Whatever we do, we want to do it on our own. Will we see you working with David Dhawan again? No, never. And I would prefer not to discuss it. I don’t want to hurt anybody. Any other films in the pipeline? Yes, I have signed two-three films but I will talk about them when they are ready. That’s the way I work.

Bipasha Basu: Nobody can be called Queen of Fear except me! Bipasha Basu talks about her first foray in television with her favourite genre- horror! I am meeting Bipasha Basu after a long time. The last time we met, she was promoting her horror film, and now she is set to anchor a horror show, &TV’s Darr Sabko Lagta Hai, created, conceptualised and produced by directors Raj & DK. This is the first time that the actress is flirting with the small screen. Here, she talks about why she chose this medium, her plans to produce horror films and why she loves the genre so much. Read on… Tell me about Darr Sabko Lagta Hai. It’s a TV series — short, episodic films and not serials. It will air on weekends and the stories start and finish on the same day. So, Saturday and Sunday will have two different stories. They are short and entertaining films. Many good directors and actors have been roped in to showcase their talent and play with the supernatural genre. I didn’t want to read a teleprompter and just narrate the story. My integration as an actor has been done very intelligently. I will be part of every episode, but my positioning is interesting. It’s not like the Indian horror that we usually see on Indian television. It’s a slick, contemporary take on horror and it is going to scare the daylights out of you. I really couldn’t say no to something like that as it’s a first of its kind. Why TV now? For five years, I contemplated what to do on TV. I wanted to do a fitness show. We discussed it, but realised that fitness would bring very few eyeballs. It would be a very niche show. I can do that later in life, but first, it had to be something that I had to be excited about. I didn’t want to do something predictable like music, reality, dance show etc, which are fun and maybe I will do them eventually, but this has an edge, it’s different. It’s also my home turf. Nobody can be called Queen of Fear except me. They cannot have anybody better than me! I know and can say very proudly that it’s a tag I completely own — I own the genre of horror. I’d been offered another horror show before, but it was very typical, so I didn’t do it. It is not about the money, but the content. I had to come up with something new. Do you feel that film offers may decrease because you entered TV? Absolutely not. In fact I think TV is as big as cinema today. My Darr… campaign and the way it has been shot and
25
November 2015
promoted like a film campaign. It’s turned out to be really nice. There is actually no boundary or difference between films and TV today. I am also doing something which is again different — the webisodes — Rohan Sippy is directing. It is the modern age of transition. If you are doing the same creatives for TV with the same unit and technicians it’s exciting! For me, is the arc of the character – it goes not just those 12 episodes but will go to season three. In a two-hour 10-minute film, the character growth specially for girls, lasts for six months, think about my character growth in 45-minute episodes for three seasons or even more where my character going, how in-depth and involved we have to be! So for an actor it’s very exciting. Finally, it’s going to be like Netflix because of the way we are all hooked onto the Amercian series like the House Of Cards or Orange Is The New Black. Are you involved creatively in the episodes? I am completely involved in my episodes, but I am not in a position to challenge Raj and DK because they are extremely talented. Also the kind of good directors that they have, like Suparn Varma, Sangeeth Sivan, Saumik Sen… I can’t challenge their credibility because they are really good! Was it tough making the transition from films to television? No, it was not tough at all. In fact, I was very comfortable about it. Nothing has really changed. My DOP Prakash Kutty is the same DOP of Alone, the sensibilities of Raj and DK are what I have worked with all my life, so in terms of the creatives, backing and production it’s exactly the same way that we do films. I am not seeing the difference. The only difference is, that for TV, we do an entire scene in one stretch, and I like it that way. Generally in films, they break up one scene into different parts and shoot different dialogues and scenes from various angles but on TV, we do the entire scene. I enjoy it because I like the flow and spontaneity in that. It’s better for an actor like me who remembers my scenes but it’s not easy for all actors. What are you loving most about TV? The fact that I am going to reach out to many more people with really great content. I think it’s the correct choice for me. I couldn’t have asked for a better show. To end on a horrific note! What’s your scariest horror movie? The Shining. Have you seen Jack Nicholson’s face? It was so scary! The story was fantastic and it’s an epic film.
AR Rahman: I have started this movie which I am producing, scripting, and composing music for!
26
November 2015
Apart from making a movie and music, Rahman will also be seen in a documentary on his life soon… His score in Slumdog Millionaire won him two Oscars and a Grammy making him a global sensation. Earlier, he had teamed up with Andrew Lloyd Webber for Bombay Dreams; more recently, he composed the music for Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi’s Muhammad: The Messenger of God, and formed a supergroup with Mick Jagger called Superheavy. Despite all this international glory and fame, AR Rahman continues to remain elusive and media-shy. Now, a documentary on the music icon, tracing his journey from Chennai to Los Angeles will let the viewers into his home and heart — his style of working, his inspiration, what music means to him, etc. Called Jai Ho, the 90-minute documentary will be aired on Discovery later this month. Here Rahman talks about the reason why he agreed to a film on him, scoring music for the biopic of soccer legend Pele and more… Do you like watching documentaries? Yes, I loved watching Waiting For Sugarman (about South African culture), When We Were Kings (on Mohammad Ali) and the documentary on Michael Jordan. What made you give a nod for Jai Ho? I have had a lot of offers before Jai Ho, but I felt it was not necessary. However, after the Oscars and all the brouhaha, I thought people would get some kind of inspiration on the journey of my life, the way I make music, through a documentary. Umesh Aggarwal, who is an award-winning filmmaker contacted me and said it’s only for the consulates all over the world. People who live abroad and hold the Indian flag in esteem, deserve to know about personalities in India. Also, ‘only for the consulates’ means less exposure, which is good because I hate to watch myself. I didn’t know this would happen. What did you think about it? It’s a very understated documentary, not very big. It has got its humour and is mostly about my music. More than me, people are talking about about me. It is fascinating to watch what Gulzar, Andrew (Lloyd Webber) and Danny Boyle are saying about me. It is like rediscovering myself. Listening to them, has there been any change in you? Yes. In fact, there has been a whole shift in my thinking in the past four years. Now, I have got into the filmmaking process, casting hundreds of girls and boys, something I
27
November 2015
have never done in my life before. I have started this movie which I am producing, scripting, and composing music for. It is being directed by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy. I will be announcing it very soon. What does the title Jai Ho mean to you? I am lucky that I have done a song like Jai Ho. It’s almost like a mantra for India. It was there always, but it fell into place at the right time. The whole world woke up to it, I am really proud of it. What are your Jai Ho memories? It was a period of ups and downs. 2008 was the year of the Mumbai terror attack. My studio was flooded, a lot of negative things happened. I lost my engineer. It was the lowest point of my life after my father’s death. But when I went to Los Angeles for the promotion of Slumdog Millionaire, all the highs happened — Superheavy with Mick Jagger, winning the Golden Globe and getting the Oscar nomination. I think it’s an interesting period to examine life and how it takes you. Any plans of penning a book? Nasreen Munni Kabir has written a book on me and is planning another in a couple of years. Also, the first movie I am producing could become a book later. There is so much information and detailing in it, that it might become an interesting book. You composed music for Pele’s biopic... He is a legend in sports and it was a honour doing his movie. Meeting him recently was a bigger honour. It was a dream come true. What kind of music have you scored for it? It’s edgy — the mode of making is in the school of Danny Boyle, but very Pele with Brazilian influence. I loved it. Having worked in Hollywood, do you think their perception towards Bollywood has changed now or is it still only about song-and-dance? I think more movies like Slumdog Millionare should happen. It is all a question of success. In fact, success is the best revenge. More movies from here have to become worldwide hits. Respect comes from how you place your culture and make it accessible to everyone. And I see it happening. A lot of young people are discovering themselves and explosion of talent is going to happen
Kriti Sanon on Kajol: I was very scared to work with her!
Kajol and Kriti share screen space in Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale… Kriti Sanon plays Varun Dhawan’s leading lady in the Shah Rukh Khan- Kajol starrer Dilwale which is to release on December 18 this year. The film is going to be a typical Rohit Shetty ride of fun and entertainment. The film brings together Varun and Kriti for the first time ever. It is also the first time ever that Kriti will be sharing screen with Kajol. The Heropanti actress has a few scenes with Kajol in the film. She admits she was super nervous about facing the camera with the senior actress, “I have to confess I was very scared to work with her initially, but the way she helped me in my very first scene with her made it so easy. She was so helpful and gave me such good insights on how I should say my lines or do the scene. Just watching her perform is amazing because she is an instinctive actor, she plays out what she feels. It’s all in her eyes, she just acts through them. She is also a lot of fun to work with, we have had emotional scenes where we both just cracked up and laughed hysterically.” We are dying to see Kajol and Kriti’s chemistry in Dilwale!

Iqbal Khan: I would do Bigg Boss only if I am broke!
34
November 2015
The actor is back on the small screen as Ishaan Hooda in Balaji Telefilms’Pyaar Ko Ho Jaane Do… One of the first rockstars of the TV industry, Iqbal Khan is undoubtedly one of the handsomest men around. His fans swear by his charismatic presence. The actor who was last seen onKhatron Ke Khiladi, will seen next as Ishaan Hooda on the show, Pyaar Ko Ho Jaane Do that has just gone on air on Sony. Here are excerpts from an interview. What is Pyaar Ko Ho Jaane Do all about? It is a story that revolves around what happens when romance goes out of a marriage. After a certain period of time, people start taking each other for granted and a marriage loses its spark. The show deals with it. Will it be a finite show considering the storyline? Well, I have no idea about that. It is upto the makers. Tell us a bit about Ishaan Hooda your character? All I can say is that I have never played a character like him onscreen. I am going to shock everyone with this role. The image of you as Angad from Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai is still fresh in your fans’ minds. You look a lot mature on this show? Did you work on your looks? Honestly, I like myself a lot more now than I did 10 years ago. I feel a man’s face looks more appealing with a few lines here and there. It is a sign of maturity and of life’s experiences. You can’t look ageless like a Barbie doll over the years. I did not really work on my looks per se for the show. How is Mona Singh as a co-star? I have known her since quite some time. We started our careers at the same time. She is a really nice person. Mona gives positive vibes and is too much fun to be with. In fact, I am so used to her chirpy presence that I feel low on days when she is not present. We are friends so there was no hassle in developing that onscreen chemistry. You have only done one reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi so far. Is it because you don’t find them interesting? Will we ever see you on a show like Bigg Boss? Never say never. I might do more in the future. However, I don’t see myself in Bigg Boss. I would do it only if I am broke. Touch wood, God has been kind so far. What is your take on the concept of finite shows? I feel they are a great concept but they should work. We need a couple of them to succeed in a really big way to see more of them. I have not followed any of the finite shows on Indian TV so far so I can’t talk much on it. How do you keep the romance alive in your marriage? Well, I spend a lot of time with Sneha, my wife. Whenever I am not working, my maximum time is spent with them. We have a little daughter, Ammara who needs
35
November 2015
our attention. I am not the guy who loves his boys’ night outs, industry parties or cricket matches. I am a homebird. Any relationship tip you would like to share? You need to keep your partner happy, take out time to be together alone and communicate a lot. For example, when I get home by 10.30 pm or so, my wife gets busy thinking about my dinner but all I want is that she should sit with me for half an hour on the couch and talk. We get too involved with work or chores, I feel ‘talking’ should be given equal importance. What are your hobbies? I am quite lazy just being at home is good enough for me. If I get a longer holiday, I like to go to my hometown, Kashmir but now my trips will revolve around Ammara’s schedule as she has started school.
Shahid Kapoor growing a beard for Rangoon! Shahid Kapoor stars alongside Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut in Rangoon directed by Vishal Bhardwaj… Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who will be seen in a different avatar in Vishal Bharadwaj’sRangoon, said the director has always given him good looks in his films. “I read reports that shooting for my next film Rangoon begins in November but that it is not true I start shooting in December. Vishal (director Vishal Bharadwaj) has asked me to go grow beard potentially maybe we can use it (look) for the film,” Shahid told reporters here at an event last night. “I do what he (Vishal) says, I don’t discuss much with him. He has always given me good looks in his films,” the Jab We Met star said. In Vishal’s Haider, Shahid had chopped his shiny, floppy hair for a close crop and a beard. While in Kaminey where he had double role saw him with long hair and chiseled body. Rangoon also starring Kangana Ranuat and Saif Ali Khan,is romantic musical film. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Lara Dutta, Sridevi – who impressed you more with their comeback?
37
November 2015
They have been here, done it and then took a sabbatical. They arrived again and now you tell us, who’s return made you applaud the loudest! Bollywood is a very unfair place. If you make it big and into one of the top rungs in the industry, you are worshipped. You are wanted, desired, sought after like crazy. You are everywhere and you get overwhelmed by the attention. But the moment you decide to shift your priorities from showbiz, you have to wait it out more than the usual to orchestrate a comeback. This is absolutely true in case of actresses here. They anyway have the smallest shelf life in the industry and if you get married, tides change for you completely. Fortunately, with changing times and taste of the audience, we don’t have to stay deprived of these brilliant actresses anymore. They get stories that highlight their talent and leave us impressed. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is back on the big screen as a wronged mother with Jazbaa after five years and made people realise what they were missing. Many such actresses have made their comebacks to various outcome and we would like to know who impressed you more. And your options are… Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Jazbaa She is one of the most beautiful women to ever walk on earth. She is simply mesmerising and her choice of comeback
38
November 2015
makes her one of the intelligent ones too. Jazbaa has her in an author backed role of a mother who fights to get her kidnapped daughter back. It’s gritty, slicky and stylish thriller which is Sanjay Gupta‘s forte. She got back to her sexy self for the film and staged a comeback people will remember forever. Sridevi – English Vinglish Everyone was waiting to see this powerhouse of talent on screen. Everytime Sridevi has worked in a film, she made us applaud loudly and then English Vinglish happened. We just couldn’t have enough of her. The role of a mother bogged down by the pressures of being happening and fluent in English is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. This was one story we all could relate to because we have seen kids berating their parents for not being hip enough. You can only trust Sridevi to return after 15 years to lights camera action with such a well-meaning film and she just won us over completely! Lara Dutta – Singh Is Bliing In a film that has big names like Akshay Kumar in the lead and is a slapstick number, one can hardly expect anyone else to either get better screen time or better role. But Lara Dutta, who faced camera after marriage and a kid with SIB,
has floored audience with her comic timing. People were stunned to see her funny side. To shine in an out and out Akshay Kumar film is no mean task and for that, you need talent. Lara, turns out, has that in dollops! Madhuri Dixit- Aaja Nachle Madhuri Dixit’s comeback was the most awaited one and was meant to be. She is the Dhak dhakgirl of Bollywood; so how can the heart beat when she is away. After 5 years, she returned to the big screen with Yash Raj Films’ Aaja Nachle; flaunting her asset, that dazzling smile and the dance! She was perfect for the film but audience didn’t really feel so. Whatever may be the case, the film did bring back Bollywood’s crowned jewel. Karisma Kapoor – Dangerous Ishq Karisma Kapoor took 6 years to return as the main lead in a film called Dangerous Ishq. It was a thriller love saga spanning generations. Karisma looked beautiful but the film was hardly so. Audience rejected it instantly but she shined. Real talent glistens even in murky surroundings. Post that she has been away from the big screen. We hope she gets a role befitting her calibre to do. So these are the comebacks we were pretty excited

Irrfan Khan: In Jazbaa I wasn’t looking for a challenge, I was looking for entertainment! Irrfan, who was last seen playing a police officer in Talvar, will be seen essaying the role of a suspended inspector in Jazbaa Be it Deepika Padukone’s unique role in “Piku” or Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s power-packed avatar in “Jazbaa”, actor Irrfan Khan is happy that Indian actresses are increasingly choosing performance-oriented characters over formulaic Bollywood entertainers. Asked if actresses today prefer doing offbeat and character roles, Irrfan said: “Yes, lots of actresses today want to work more in offbeat cinema. Deepika did it in ‘Piku’. Most actresses would say ‘This film does not have dancing or singing, then why should I do it?’ But see, Deepika is a top star and she did it beautifully.” “Actresses want to do performances…like Priyanka (Chopra), who is doing an international TV show, where she only needs to act. Actresses are getting ambitious about doing great performances, which is a good sign,” added the “Piku” actor, who was in Delhi to promote “Jazbaa” along with Aishwarya. Irrfan, who was last seen playing a police officer in “Talvar“, will be seen essaying the role of a suspended inspector in “Jazbaa”, directed by Sanjay Gupta. He says his new film is “an edge of the seat thriller”. “In ‘Jazbaa’ I wasn’t looking for a challenge, I was looking for entertainment…I usually do films which urge people to think about and see something new. This film has a unique concept. Also, ‘Jazbaa’ is a ‘paisa vasool’ film. It is an edge of the seat thriller,” Irrfan said. ”Jazbaa”, which also stars veteran actress Shabana Azmi, Jackie Shroff among others is hitting the screens on Friday.

The 10 best European destinations in 2015
Bored by Berlin? Tired of Tuscany? Paris? We’ve all been there. If you’re serious about your European destinations, these are the places to head for…
As the project of European integration looks like it may be hitting the skids after all, it’s a good time to revel in the diversity of the continent that thinks it’s a currency – a collision of cultures that comprises two dozen working languages and twice as many sovereign states. Now here’s a tectonic mass where you can start your day in the glinting foothills of the 4,800m-high Mont Blanc and end it by the glittering waters of the Med; where you can blitz through a handful of former imperial capitals in a day; where you can find Byzantine ruins, a Zoroastrian temple, a world-beating museum and a cutting-edge nightclub – all in a single square mile. Visitors to Europe hop across borders with impunity and make use of the cheapest international flights in the world. And for all this, the most well-travelled continent in the world retains its overlooked nooks and fringes. Paris and Barcelona are all well and good, but for a sense of ‘deep Europe’ (as we’re calling it), we suggest heading for the destinations that blend beauty, charisma and room to breathe in exactly the right quantities. And, as well as being amazing holiday spots in their own right, each of these cities offers an experience that is distinctly European. Proper, authentic, locally-sourced Europe: sample it in 2015 – while you still can…

Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik may boast a remarkable history – it is the site of the world’s first parliament, thought to have been established in 930 AD – but the city today holds its past and future in even balance. Its modernism is striking, from the clean lines of its buildings to its experimental music scene to its status as one of the most environmentally conscious cities in the world. Reykjavik’s compact size (it has only 120,000 inhabitants – positively titchy for a European capital) makes it ideal for a casual wander. If you want to get your bearings, start by taking a trip in the elevator to the top of Hallgrimskirkja, Iceland’s largest church, which resembles the helm of a Viking ship. Culture vultures should then flock to the cultural hub of Harpa, while nature lovers can opt for whale-watching at the harbour or hikes along the coastline. And whatever your predilections, a dip in one of the city’s famous hot pools makes for a perfect cap to a day of ambling. You won’t want to leave.
the old town of Vecriga and its beautiful early-20th-century art nouveau districts to the north point to the city’s importance and prosperity over the centuries. But Riga is much more than a beautiful relic. The city is booming – its selection as the European Capital of Culture for 2014 attests to its meteoric rise in the last few decades – and the years of suffocating Soviet rule are rapidly becoming a distant memory. The economic regeneration is matched by a burgeoning
Gozo, Malta
The Maltese archipelago has more to offer than just the island from which it takes its name. A mere 25 minutes by ferry from Malta, tiny Gozo is a destination in its own right, boasting a distinct history, culture and character. The Maltese flock here to enjoy the verdant scenery, superior food and relaxed pace of life. And it isn’t just the locals that love it: none other than Brangelina chose it as their honeymoon destination.
tourist trade and a vibrant (some would say riotous) nightlife, which often carries on until dawn; Riga is understandably popular with stag and hen parties at the weekends. If it all gets too much, then beyond the city lies the beautiful Baltic coast. The resort town of Jurmala is 30 minutes by train west of Riga and was once a popular retreat for the Russian royal family and Communist Party bigwigs. It still draws the crowds in summer with its outstanding natural beauty and excellent health spas.
Split, Croatia
Most roads in Gozo lead to the capital, Victoria, an attractive jumble of markets, restaurants, quaint British gardens and diverting museums. Its high point – quite literally – is the ancient fortified Cittadella, with its magnificent 360-degree view of the island. Spread out below you are the island’s chief sights: the scenic beach resort of Marsalforn, the world-famous Neolithic temples of Ggantija, and the legendary Calypso’s Cave, where Odysseus may or may not have taken a break during his travels. Believe us: come to Gozo, and you’ll want to stay for more than just a pit stop.
Riga, Latvia
The capital of Latvia and the largest city in the Baltic States, Riga is rich in history and heritage. The medieval wonders of

Split is no longer a mere hop-off point on the way to the nearby destination islands of Brač, Hvar and Vis. Today the de facto capital of Dalmatia, built around a living Roman ruin, has everything you could want from a holiday and then some. A rash of new four- and five-star hotels, galleries filled with works by Ivan Meštrović, Croatia’s most celebrated sculptor, and the best bar crawl on the Adriatic coast – not to mention beach parties and a major music festival – all make for a perfect
summer getaway. But Split also provides a great year-round city break, not least due to the recent phenomenon of quality bistro openings. Venues such as Uje, NoStress and Bokeria form a part of this new culinary wave, making the best use of fresh, organic regional produce and the bounty of the Adriatic. And, unlike the more glamorous Dubrovnik, Split is also eminently affordable.
Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden
Copenhagen’s visitor appeal has exploded over the past few years, with people from all around the world flocking to Scandinavia’s most avant-garde city to enjoy its innovative restaurants, enviable bike culture and strong arts scene. The city exudes a fairytale charm through its royal palaces, Tivoli theme park and colourful historic buildings. Meanwhile, its much-hyped New Nordic restaurants continue to draw the foodies, with a whole host of internationally acclaimed chefs following in the footsteps of Noma’s René Redzepi in their quest to reinterpret traditional Scandinavian cooking. Anyone who’s ever tuned into another successful local
and Western orientation. On its fringes, on-trend bars and cafés sprout like hairs in a hipster’s beard, drawing in the city’s burgeoning student population. Then you turn a corner, and another world intrudes: a Zoroastrian temple founded millennia ago by Persians, or a complex of sulphuric baths framed by minarets. As Tbilisi sloughs off its Soviet veneer and reopens itself to the West, its cultural riches are once again becoming accessible to the adventurous traveller. There’s never been a better time to go.
Kraków, Poland
export, TV crime drama ‘The Bridge’, will know that a no less scintillating city awaits a half hour’s drive away. It happens to be in another country and across a sea, but Malmö – Sweden’s third-largest city – is worth the short trip via the Øresund Bridge. Its unusually cosmopolitan population includes some 15,000 university students, who give the city a vibrant energy. The place is particularly appealing during the summer, when its long sandy beach and beautiful parks really come into their own, and when its historic heart, centred around the lovely cobbled square of Lilla Torg, comes alive – especially at night.
Tbilisi, Georgia
Straddling the border between historical empires, Georgia’s capital is an alluring hybrid of architecture, customs and traditions, whose enduring anonymity on the tourism scene makes it all the more special for those who do visit. Georgia may not technically be in Europe (though that doesn’t stop it from competing in Eurovision, as Australians are well aware) – but you wouldn’t know it from a stroll through Tbilisi’s Old Town, whose quaint Orthodox churches and dusty Art Deco edifices speak to the city’s Christian heritage

November 2015
By now many of you will know Kraków, the former Polish capital and seat of learning with the pristine Old Town. Those on a return visit may have spent more time exploring the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz – its empty synagogues and crumbling cemeteries, where Spielberg filmed ‘Schindler’s List’. Few, though, will have made it across to Podgórze, the grey area immediately over the river. But on your next visit, make sure you go – for Podgórze is where the scene is heading. At the foot of the crisscross cast-iron bridge stands the Drukarnia, perhaps the best bar in the city. Regular live jazz acts and DJs provide entertainment amid the lively banter. Nearby, Peruvian, Hawaiian and Indian coffees are purveyed at
the bohemian Rekawka Café. After doing the street-level stroll, you can observe this compact quarter from the comfort of the rooftop pool atop the Qubus spa and business hotel. Seven storeys high, with a quality restaurant, jazz club and piano bar, it’s the most impressive of its genre in Poland’s most dynamic and affluent city.
trail. And after all that walking (and indeed, wine-tasting) you’ll be relieved to discover you’re in one of the most mineral-rich areas in Europe, which means lots of healthy spas, springs and inviting natural pools throughout the area.
Costa Brava, Spain
This region is the apple of Catalonia’s eye, and not only because of its gorgeous beaches, its peaceful coves and fishing villages, or its festivals and trendy clubs. It’s the friendly locals, the beauty of the landscape and the cultural traditions – everything comes together to create a marvellous whole. And since you can’t really get to know an area without tasting its food and drinking its wine, the region’s restaurants are another big draw, serving feasts of fresh seafood, perfectly cooked meats and fantastic local vintages to diners sitting outdoors – or even inside a castle.
There’s no shortage of cultural pursuits here either – the State Gallery is duly magnificent, whilst the conveniently compact cultural quarter at Palace Square houses the New and Old Palaces, the Königsbau Arcade and the Museum of Art. Despite its low-key reputation, there’s enough to see and do here to get a feel for this likeable and friendly little city in the green – you’ll be enchanted by it.
Lisbon, Portugal
If somehow you’re still not convinced, perhaps some celebrity endorsements will do the trick. Salvador Dalí was greatly inspired by the views from his Cadaqués home (now a public museum), Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra spent time in Tossa del Mar (she was filming, he was racing to her side in a fit of jealousy), and Truman Capote wrote part of his masterpiece ‘In Cold Blood’ while staying in Palamós. All this and more, a mere jaunt from Barcelona.
Stuttgart, Germany
Germany’s sixth-largest city is best known for being the home of the automobile. Porsche and Mercedes-Benz continue to be made there today, with both legendary marques offering factory tours and museums devoted to the history of their iconic jalopies over the years. Yet there’s much more to discover here than merely a petrolhead’s paradise. The city is ringed by walkable hills, valleys, woodlands, lakes, acres of rolling parkland and vineyards – yep, there’s a rich and lustily celebrated ancient winemaking history here which can be enjoyed on the picturesque ‘Weinwanderweg’ wine-walking (staggering?)

There’s always been an infinite number of reasons to visit Europe’s most westerly capital. Boasting word-class restaurants (which excel in seafood), a reputation for style and a long artistic pedigree, Portugal’s first city continues to draw in punters with its cultural and culinary charms. But as of 2015 there are infinite plus one reasons, thanks to a new gastronomic venture spearheaded by Time Out – if we do say so ourselves. Mercado da Ribeira has had many guises: its roots can be traced back to the 13th century, and it was once one of the most famous fish markets in Europe. Many of its traders have been selling fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and flowers there for decades. When we learned that the city council was seeking bids for the chance to manage a large part of the iconic attraction, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. The Time Out Mercado da Ribeira now brings together some of the city’s most loved names in food and drink; for full details, check out our insiders’ guide. Star : Ironman Milind Soman: Fit at FiftyBACK TO ALL STORIES Milind Soman became a heart-throb overnight when he played Captain Vyom in 1998. His topless act in Made in India, made him the man of every woman’s dream. Years later, at the age of 50, Milind is still a heart-throb who is getting fitter and looking hotter by the day. There’s no stopping him, who completed a famous triathlon called ‘Ironman’ in Zurich, earlier this week.
The Zurich triathlon
Milind had been preparing rigorously for this triathlon, for the last three months. From running to cycling, he would spend hours training himself for the toughest triathlon of the world. He managed to complete the triathlon in 15 hours and 19 minutes. For those of you wondering what he did in these 15 hours and 19 minutes; well, he cycled, ran and swam nonstop. The Ironman Triathlon is one of a series long-distance triathlon races organised by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a 3.86 km swim, 180.25 km bicycle ride and a 42.2 km marathon - without a break. Whoever completes this within 16 hours is an ‘Ironman’ Ask him how he kept his focus intact. “Explore what you feel and enjoy every moment,” he says. We’re literally drooling over Milind’s stamina at this age!
Love for Running – Bare feet
Milind was a national level swimmer before his twist with modelling. But it was running he found solace in. He has been participating in endurance running events for the past 14 years and there has been no stopping the man. He has been associated with Pinkathon, which is a women-only running event for breast cancer awareness. “I conceptualised Pinkathon as a space that would encourage more women to adopt a

fitter lifestyle, and by their example, inspire fitter families. This year 75,000 women will participate in the Pinkathon across 8 cities,” he says. That’s not all. This man runs bare feet. He believes that running bare feet makes you comfortable with the surface you run on. While he has nothing against shoes, he personally prefers running bare feet. “I run bare feet because it’s comfortable and it helps me run with the correct form, balance and posture,” says Milind.
Fitness Secrets
We couldn’t help but ask Milind what’s his secret to remaining fit at 50, as his dedication and passion for working out really impressed us. “The secret is consistent and regular hard work and a positive mind,” he says. His workout includes 2 hours combinations of swimming/cycling/running five days a week. On Sundays, he does a 4-hour workout in an activity of his choice. As far as his diet is concerned, he loves food cooked by his mother. “I eat regular home food, mom’s cooking,” he says. Fitness runs in Milind’s family. His mother, at the age of 76, participates in Oxfam Trailwalker, which is a 100km event. For Milind, he says he will keep participating in such triathlons for as long as he is able to. Truly an inspiration!

Vidya Balan: I read that Woody Allen signed Freida Pinto and I was like OMG! No! Why couldn’t he have asked me? She may not be doing as many films as her A-lister contemporaries but Vidya Balan is hungry for good roles! Vidya Balan seems to know her mind. The actress has been around for fairly long to be able to do that. She knows when to sign on a project and refuse it and then live with the consequences thereof. She admits to taking risks and pursuing passions and paying the price for both (and reaping the profits as well). Tad picky about her roles, she admits she’d like to be able to play any sort of character, even negative ones. Read on for more of what she had to share… Why are we seeing so little of you on screen? Taking it easy now? Not at all (laughs). As a matter of fact, I was taking it easy for a bit for a year in between when I was going through some health issues, which is why I had to opt out of Sujoy Ghosh’s film. But after that, Hamari Adhuri Kahani. I was close to signing a couple of films, but for some reason, they didn’t work out,. Then, Ek Albela happened which was just six days of work. I have reached a stage where unless I am fully, passionately madly in love with what I am doing, I don’t want to do it. It’s not about being selective. I give all of myself, so unless I am
50
November 2015
completely sure of what I am doing, I won’t sign on. Have you decided to do very few films after marriage or has it turned out that way? No. I didn’t need to. Like Siddharth has not cut down on his work (laughs). Last year, when I had that health issue I realised that I had let myself reach that phase by working relentlessly. Actually, I am someone who has always taken it quite easy. I don’t drive myself crazy by having three releases a year but having said that I give so much of myself to everything that I do that I end up not having time for myself. Maybe it was a physical and mental break that I needed. I am not in a hurry to get anywhere as I know I am here for a lifetime. After The Dirty Picture released, when most people would have gone on a signing spree, I took a break. I just like to take things as they come at my space. I have always done that. There’s no set agenda. I like to enjoy every moment that I am doing things at a pace that I know I will be able to enjoy. How do you pass your time when not working? At least thrice a week, I end up doing script narrations (laughs) and the rest of the time I spend with family, catching up with old friends, watching films at home, reading; though largely, I have been reading only scripts. Since I became an actor, my time spent reading books has reduced tremendously. How driven are you on a scale from one to 10? It could vary anywhere between zero and 10 because when I like something I am driven beyond 10. But I am not driven to grab and sign as many films as possible. I am driven about my performances because when I like something and I commit to a film then I am giving it my all but when I am not, I am not fidgety saying what film am I doing next or I have no films at the moment. I have never called a director to cast me in his film and not good, bad or otherwise, I just have never been able to do that. To each his own but I have never done that. Of course, it’s another thing if I meet someone and like their work — like I remember I met Mohit (Suri) after Aashiqui 2 and told him that I wanted to work with him. That’s how Hamari Adhuri Kahani happened. Are you superstitious? Would you change the name of your spelling or wear stones that attract good luck, etc? No. I don’t believe in superstitions at all. I do pray and I have my own little rituals, but I am not a ritualistic person. I am not the kind to stick to vrats and go to a particular temple on a particular day. I need my food every day! (Laughs) I pray, but in a language that only I can understand. That’s it. Are you lazy when it comes to ambition? (Laughs) I don’t know if I am lazy but I am laidback, I think. I am not a go-getter, yet I do exactly what
51
November 2015
I want. I define ambition as in it’s all about me. I am self-consumed or self-centred. For me no one else exists on that planet. The killer instinct happens only when something excites me and I have to dive into it. Do I make things happen? No. I never really have. Maybe that’s a drawback though I have never seen it like that as it’s always worked for me. Though I would love for people to come and watch me in the theatres and go crazy about me like Salman Khan — let’s hope the Universe is listening (laughs) — I am very realistic, I know that’s not the real reason that people came to watch those films. I am grateful for the love I got, but I did what I felt instinctively as an actor. In fact, some of the films I said no to during that time went on to do very well but I have no regrets that I wasn’t part of them. I really believe that daane daane pe likha hota hai khaane wale ka naam.
All actresses are expanding their horizons — production houses, fitness DVDs or online shopping avenues. What might you pursue someday? I don’t have any talent besides acting. If there’s any iota of talent I have, it’s in this department (laughs). I know nothing besides that. ROLE PLAY If you were offered something glamorous and sizzling again, would you do it? I am hoping it’s not like The Dirty Picture or Kahani because I have done that, but I am a hungry actor. That beast in me is just waiting to devour an exciting role and the moment I find that role that will satiate me, I am going to just fall on it and gobble it up! (Laughs) If you had met me a month ago, I would have said I am not excited about anything, but suddenly, now, I don’t refuse anyone and read every script that comes my way. You never know what could excite you and that’s what’s really interesting me at this point. Now, I feel again that something new is emerging. Upcoming directors of chick flicks find it hard to find finance for their films if they don’t have big actresses. Would you do one if it wasn’t a big director/banner? I think I did that with Bobby Jasoos. I invest my faith in a script and people (smiles). Of course, it’s collaborative and you have to take those risks — sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes even the biggest films and best teams don’t work, so you can’t really determine these things. I go purely by instinct. Any Hollywood film you would love to do? Last week I was watching Before Sunrise… I wish someone would make Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight — the entire series… I am dying to make a film on that. I have been watching a lot of international TV series like The House Of Cards and the crime-drama Luther. But I can’t think of a Hollywood film that’s really inspired me in recent times. I have to mention here that I loved Mad Max: Fury Road and I would love to do what Charlize Theron did as her character Imperator Furiosa. I am dying to do an action film but it HAS to be a high-octane, intense, feminist action film movie! And of course, Woody Allen if you are listening (laughs). I will fly to wherever you are! I would love to act in one of his films. The only time in my entire career that I felt jealous of someone when I heard that Freida Pinto had been signed by Woody Allen. I read that and I was like OMG! No! Why couldn’t he have asked me? But you are perceived as sensitive and vulnerable, rather than the tough-talking Imperator Furiosa! No one thought that I would do a Dirty Picture, no? I

am also waiting when I talk of something new emerging, it’s also new kind of opportunities, it’s not the same rehashes of the kind of work that I have done. In which case, it’s not exciting for me. It has to be unpredictable enough for me to exclaim that OMG! Really? I can do this? I would love to play a dark character — just to explore the dark side of a person and discover the complexity and various shades of the character! I don’t know whether this is a politically correct thing to say — the matter is sub judice — but I would love to play someone like Indrani Mukerjea as I find her really intriguing. Sounds interesting! Of course, there are many films being made on her, but she’s the most recent reference. I am not talking about killing someone but each of us has a dark side; and now, I feel ready to explore that. Until now I have always shied away from playing negative characters. I remember Anurag Kashyap spoke to me about a film and I told him it was too dark and that I couldn’t do it. I said no to Vishal Bhardwaj, too. I couldn’t do that, but now I feel it’s the time to do those kind of roles. I am ready to explore the dark side. Vishal would tell me, “Vidya you have reached the top now. As an actor now I want you to tip over and bounce back.” He meant that I have done a great variety of roles, but I should do something that completely tips me over… I am waiting for a role like that. GHAR KI BAAT Do you and your husband talk films? Yes, of course. We watch a lot of films almost every weekend. If there’s a new release we go to the theatre and watch the film. We avoid film screenings because I like to watch it with the real audience. We watch it on Saturdays as he is working on Fridays. What about your scripts? No. Where signing films are concerned, that decision is purely my own because I want the credit for it (laughs). Choosing a script is a very private, personal and selfish decision for me. I don’t take feedback from anyone. People tell me I don’t share what I am reading, I don’t discuss scripts with other actors. I don’t discuss my work with Siddharth but once I have decided, I may take him through it and similarly with my family, and even before I was married. It’s my madness more than my passion as an actress! (laughs) Does he bring his work home? Yes, specially because our common connect is films we invariably end up discussing a lot, but Siddharth is also a very private individual. It is work, but there are boundaries. We do discuss films but not so much the content in them, more about the happenings of our day.
Smart Tips to Lose Inches Do fad diets actually help? Is cooking in ghee better than cooking in vegetable oil? Rashi Chowdhary, nutritionist and inchloss expert and the owner of The Protein Bake Shop, on the dos and donts of weightloss Do you think fad diets are useful when it comes to reducing weight? Well, fad diets are an absolute waste of your time, effort, money and most often muscle! That’s why the weight drops off so quickly and comes right back on when you resume normal eating. We need to stop treating our health like fashion. You can’t keep going on and off fad diets depending on which one’s in season because your fave celeb went on it! Your body will never change if you don’t change your attitude towards it. Eating in balance and according to your fitness goals will take time, effort and patience but the peace of mind and health it gives your body is unparalleled. People who eat well and focus on fitness exuberate a very different attractive, addictive vibe as compared to those who are always trying different diets and complaining about how nothing works. You need to choose which side you want to live on. Once you choose health and fitness over “deadline” dieting, you’ll never want it any other way. Which are the foods that can aid the process of inchloss? Here are my top 10 fave foods that will really accelerate inchloss. Eat them over and over again in different simple preparations to see how your body changes. Whole eggs Avocados Paleo almond butter Pasteurised butter Salmon Sweet potato White rice (no more than 1 cup cooked for one meal) Coconut milk Black coffee Green vegetables Can you recommend some steps that ought to be taken to reduce inches as fast as possible? a) Eat as soon as you wake up. Do not delay this meal. If you are looking to burn more fat start with some healthy fats like almonds, avocado or a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil. b) Add a minimum of 5 grams of protein to your mid snacks. Low-carb almond cookies, peanut butter slice or chocolate stacks, all have above 5 grams per piece. A cup of yoghurt with flaxseed powder, half a scoop of protein shake with blueberries, two slices of full fat cheese with olives are also great fat burning snacks! c) Eat according to your body clock. Not everyone needs to eat every 2 hours. A lot of people tend to gain weight with this strategy. So eat when you are hungry instead but do not starve yourself. That will definitely work against you. d) Hydrate well all through the day. Being dehydrated will

Eat breakfast as soon as you wake up in the morning only put extra loads on your liver, which is where 80 per cent of your fat metabolism takes place. Off load it, nourish it and you’ll get rid of some inches too. What should an ideal meal plan look like? An ideal meal plan is the one that makes you feel mentally and physically fit. A plan where you are not constantly obsessing over food and a plan that keeps your cravings away. You need to set a fitness goal for yourself, get a full body fat analysis done and work up a strategy that focuses on making you lose fat and not “just” weight! It should be free of processed food and have an abundant supply of nutrients from fresh food and nutritional supplements. Tell us about the Protein Bake Shop and what was the idea behind setting it up? Protein Bake Shop is not just a healthier version of your favourite dessert. When you look closely at the nutrition label and ingredients, you’ll see how it’s a healthy snacking option for anyone trying to lose weight/ get fit/ fighting with allergies and intolerances and gain muscle mass. Anyone battling with sugar addictions and wanting to make improvements in their eating habits will benefit from switching to wholesome baking with natural sugars at the Protein Bake Shop. Also, people with metabolic syndrome like Type 2 diabetes, PCOD, insulin resistance, etc, can turn to the baked stuff from the protein power range, since the total carbs are kept under 10 grams. I’ve been practicing as a nutritionist for nearly 7 years now, and the amount of misinformation that exists in people’s mind about nutrition has always made me want to do something about it. People need to go beyond concepts like calorie counting, truly understand the effect of whole wheat, low fat dairy on their body and how it might not be the best option. Also, the misconception that fat is bad for you and your cholesterol and gives you heart attacks! In my opinion, all these nutritional beliefs come in the way of us leading healthier life’s. The concept of Protein Bake Shop is based on new age nutritional science where nutrients matter more than calories, fat is good for you, refined sugar is an absolute NO and ingredients like wheat and dairy are not what marketing gimmicks make them seem like. The quality and processing methods of these ingredients are compromised heavily, which makes them nutritionally very different compared to what they use to be decades ago.
Sonnalli Seygall: I want to take Salman Khan to watch Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2!
After spectacular success of Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonnalli Seygall. wishes to work with Imtiaz Ali next! She is sexy, glamorous and can make a million heads turn in just one glance. But that’s not all there is to the spunky Sonnalli Seygall I want to take Salman Khan to watch Pyaar Ka Punchnama2! With her latest flick Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, she floored audience with her cool act and confident stance. She talks exclusively to BollywoodLife.com about how life was changed after the success of PKP 2, the way she gets angry glares from feminists and her admiration for Salman Khan. Read on.
Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 has become a smash hit. How do you react to this spectacular success? To be honest with you, We thought that the film will be successful but never did we think that it would be so big. We have already inched towards the Rs 50 crore mark and things are only looking better for us. Let me also tell you that I have not slept a wink after the film has released. And it is not because I am excitedly tossing and turning in the bed, it’s simply that my phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. How has life changed after PKP2? Well, after PKP 1, people became vaguely familiar with my existence as an actor but after this film, they know me by my name and character. It is heartening to get messages from people in film industry and it feels amazing. The other day, I was at a suburban theatre catching up a film. I got out to buy popcorn during interval and people started coming out after watching PKP2 from another screen. They crowded me and started taking selfies. I felt like a star. Did you get receive flak for bashing women in both PKP 1 and 2?

Well, this strange incident happened. I was suddenly stopped by a lady and was asked if I am associated with Pyaar Ka Punchnama. After I nodded in affirmative, this woman immediately shot a stinky stare to me. Her look said it all. But apart from that, no woman has really come up to me bashing the film. The guys love the film on the contrary. I was in my parking lot taking selfies when this guy tapped my window and hurriedly passed on a tissue paper thanking the entire cast of PKP for saving him from a bad relationship. It was really funny.
Which actor would you like to take Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2? Well, it has to be Salman Khan. It felt special when he took to Twitter to wish the film success. He is currently busy shooting for Sultan in Panvel but I really wish he watches the film. It will mean a lot to me. Which directors are on your wishlist? I am greedy for work right now. I would love to work with Imtiaz Ali, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Raju Hirani right now. These are names that I can think right now, but mostly I am ready for any kind of work right now! Do you think you will be typecast in glamorous and comedy roles after PKP? If you notice, my character in PKP 2 is drastically different from its prequel. In PKP 2, I play this confused, girl next door who is so much different than my earlier character. I would look at all aspects before deciding on a role, but I won’t be very choosy. After PKP 1, everything I was offered was on the lines of sexy, bitchy roles which I turned down. It has been a conscious effort not to do similar kind of roles
MINT – THE HEALHIEST HERB Fruits and vegetables are often times discussed as a power-house of nutrients. Many times, fresh herbs are usually forgotten on this list. Mint takes precedence among all the herbs, however they can be just as essential to a healthy diet as fruits and vegetables and can offer a wide array of health benefits. Mint is a tender herb and best to add either raw or near the end of cooking in order to maintain their delicate flavor and texture. Ancient Greeks and Romans use mint leaves to relieve pain and has been used in naturopathy to alleviate indigestion. Mint leaves are also used as a digestive aid. Oil present in the leaf relaxes the muscular lining of the digestive tract, relieving cramps, gas and also alleviating indigestion. The strong aroma of mint is very effective in clearing up congestion of the nose, throat and lungs, which gives relief from the respiratory disorders that often times result from common cold. As mint cools and soothes the throat and other respiratory channels it relieves the irritation, which causes chronic coughing. This is the main reason that many of the balms are based on the composition of mint as their main component. Mint oil is also a good antiseptic. Mint juice is an excellent cleanser. It soothes skin and helps to cure infections and also helps to reduce pimples. Even just the smell of mint oil or freshly crushed mint leaves is effective remedy for nausea. It is also a great appetizer or a palate cleanser and it helps to promote digestion. Mint also plays an important role in improving the oral hygiene. Since it has germicidal qualities and quickly freshens the breath, it adds to oral care by inhibiting harmful bacterial growth. Now a days mint is one of the most common elements in tooth- paste and mouthwashes and other dental hygiene products. The easiest way to get good results is to chew on the leaves. Besides its other uses in foods like ice- cream and

chocolate, it is also used as a condiment and a decorative item in culinary preparation. Mint is commonly used in Middle Eastern dishes, such as lamb, soups and vegetable salads. Incorporate this herb into a fresh fruit salsa with chopped apples, pear, lemon or lime juice, jalapeno and honey. Jass up your water by adding mint leaves, sliced lemon and cucumber for a refreshing drink in summer. In Indian dishes mint leaves can also be added in yoghurt, chicken or mutton biryani and also in home made lemonade. Mint leaves are also pureed with green coriander along with lemon to add extra zest to your palate. This chutney is also infused with iron and is a quick recipe for those suffering from anemia. Aside from all the health benefits of mint, it can also help to lose weight in a healthy way. Mint, stimulates the digestive enzymes that absorbs nutrients from food and consume fat that is being consumed and puts to use rather than being stored, contributing to weight gain.
Katrina Kaif: People see me as this cool and calm person, but I am hyper! 56
November 2015
She comes across as calm but Katrina reveals that she is actually quite a hyper person. Five years down the line, the actress sees herself settled down and doing films Twelve years is a lifetime in Bollywood. More so, for an actress. When you’ve been at the top of your game for most of that time, you mature as a person and in your art, you accept certain truths and get adept at adapting to changing times. Always considered something of an outsider in spite of her best efforts, Katrina Kaif has battled the odds, language constraints and more to have an envious resume. Here, she looks back at her career in acting, comments on the changes (or the lack of it) in her personal and professional life, her upcoming and past roles and the foreseeable future… You’ve been acting for 12 years now. What has changed?
(Laughs). Have I? Okay, I will take your word for it. A lot of changes… I have become more experienced, knowledgeable, acquired the tools to accomplish what you wish to accomplish… Acting is something where you constantly keep learning, evolving and bettering yourself. Earlier, my interests and involvement were far more superficial. My hard work, focus, desire and ambitions were always there but the real passion for acting or creating a character, probably a bit more creative involvement… that definitely came much later. And rightly so, because I didn’t come in with formal training. You start understanding things, opening up more, get more conscious… It happened to me in many peaks, throughout my films, like I got good feedback for Namastey London. Maybe, I am more open to diverse characters or to trying different things now. Earlier, I was quite clear that I wanted to do only this kind of a film or role, I knew what I wanted and that was coming to me, which was good. What hasn’t changed?
My hyperness… People see me as this cool and calm person, but I am hyper! My obsession for knowing what’s going for scenes, rehearsing, making things look aesthetically proper, for getting involved in every aspect of acting…. We all definitely strive for perfection. Especially in areas that I understand very well like dance, songs, costumes and glamour — I am very particular about that. How do you react to criticism that you play it safe and don’t do author-backed roles?
True. The weakness or the fault lies with me and my choices. The roles I did were my choices. This is where my heart was. I did those roles because I wanted to be a part of all those films — Ek Tha Tiger, Jab Tak Hai Jaan or a Dhoom3. Yes, smaller, heroine-centric, offbeat films and characters were coming to me at that time but I didn’t feel like doing them. Maybe that was a lack of foresight on my part. Do I look at it more seriously now? Yes. But
57
November 2015
not out of a desperation to sign anything. I will do a film that I am passionate about. If I see a film with an authorbacked role but it doesn’t excite me, then I am not going to do it. I am open to doing films of any size, budget or language but my heart has to be in it. If someone tomorrow comes to me with a role where I would have to shave my hair or cut it very short, or the character has a tragic life but still is interesting and fun, I would probably jump at it. Only because the story and role has elements of something I find beautiful. For example, like Fitoor. You liked it?
I loved my character! It is very complex, conflicted and not easy to understand. In fact, nobody who has seen the English film has been able to understand it, which has also sometimes been one of the weaknesses of the film. But I think Gattu (director Abhishek Kapoor) took care of those weaknesses and just made it beautiful. It’s one of the best characters that I have ever played. Apart from having someone like Abhishek, who is a criticallyacclaimed director, the moment I heard that it’s adapted from Great Expectations, I was in love with it! I was so happy shooting for the film! There are some films you feel glad about when are complete, but Fitoor is one film I would happily re-shoot for. Everything about the character, Gattu’s direction and the way he sees cinema was so exciting and fulfilling! Do you feel good roles don’t come to you because of your pretty Barbie doll image?
I disagree. I feel I have done film with great roles. Yes, I have played the glamour girl in some films but they were fun to do. I have done good roles too like Namastey London, Raajneeti, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. I have had the time of my life while doing MBKD. Ali (Abbas Zafar) and I went mad improvising through the shoot! Jab Tak Hai Jaan and New York were such great roles! Dhoom:3 may not have been an emotional role but had lots of dancing. Let’s not forget that in India our culture has so many wonderful dance forms, dancing is extremely popular and the whole country watches dance shows. We love dancing, it’s in our culture so let’s not belittle that. Where do you see yourself five years from now?
I wish I could see myself five years from now. Hopefully, with the person I love and still doing good work. I would love to continue working or else I will go mad! You don’t need to stop working after marriage anymore in Bollywood. At least till your child is born. I can’t sit at home doing nothing so work to me is more important to me than anybody can imagine. Look at so many successful actresses working after marriage… Kajol, Vidya, Kareena… You just need to be on the top of your game. That’s all.
